HAYDN String Quartets Op.20 No.2, Op.54 No.1 & Op.74 No.3

IMPORT For some, challenging the popular ranking of the string quartets of Joseph Haydn might seem pedantic and snobbish. Nonetheless, as with his Price Code: A22 symphonies, a far too small selection of this (Suggested Retail Price: $22.98) group of works has been able to secure a place in the repertoire of ensembles and in the catalogues of record companies. This disc by the Schuppanzigh Quartet, one of the most renowned quartets performing on historical instruments, aims to document the significance of Haydn’s string quartets by focusing on the lesser-known works from among the sixty-eight masterpieces Haydn has left us.

WAGENSEIL Quartets for low strings - Sonatas Nos.1-6 Piccolo Concerto Wien, Roberto Sensi Accent • ACC 24242 IMPORT As a chief representative of early Viennese classicism, Georg Christoph Wagenseil (17151777) united Italian, French and German stylistic Price Code: 2A14 (2 CD Set, Suggested Retail Price: $29.98) elements in his works. The Six Quartets for Low Strings on this double disc occupy a special position in his chamber music, simply by virtue of their unusual scoring and the type of classical four-movement quartet that was just coming into being. Piccolo Concerto Wien under the direction of Roberto Sensi introduces us to a music notable both for its music-historical significance and that typically Viennese quality: charm.

La Tarantella nel Salento

IMPORT The tarantella is an ecstatic folk dance from southern Italy with a long tradition. It actually came into being as a way to heal a tarantula bite. Price Code: A22 The victim of the bite danced to the point of total (Suggested Retail Price: $22.98) exhaustion in order to drive the spider’s poison out of the body. This recording by Liuwe Tamminga combines the sound of historical organs from southern Italy with other “therapeutic” instruments. Tambourine, castanets and triangle underline the rhythm whilst providing strong accents, and various plucked instruments such as the guitar and mandolin enter into a dialogue with the organ.

The Golden Age of the Cornett William Dongois (cornetto), Le Concert Brisé Accent • ACC 24261 IMPORT The cornett (also known as the cornetto or zink) is an early wind instrument that dates from the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods. Price Code: 2A14 (2 CD Set, Suggested Retail Price: $29.98) William Dongois is one of the best-known cornettists of our time. On the present double CD, together with the ensemble Le Concert Brisé, he dedicates himself to the “Golden Age” of the cornett - the period between 1580 and 1630 in Northern Italy. The first disc focuses on secular dance movements and songs of the Italian Seicento, whilst the second disc features sacred instrumental and vocal music written for St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice during the time of Monteverdi.

[PRIORITY RELEASE] BACH Cantatas - Vol.16 - BWV34, 129, 173 & 184 - Pfingst-Kantaten

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo There has long been a group of scholars that have proposed that Bach’s sacred vocal works were originally written for solo voices and not a choir. Accent’s critically-acclaimed cantata series provides a strong justification for this theory. Each disc features one cantata for each Sunday of the great feasts of the ecclesiastical year. Here, Sigiswald Kuijken and La Petite Bande are joined by a quartet of superb soloists for volume sixteen, which offers four cantatas - one each for the three days of Pentecost and one for the Sunday after Pentecost, Trinity Sunday.

“The strength of Kuijken’s approach lies precisely in its humility... it is in their sheer eloquence that Kuijken’s realizations of Bach’s cantatas surpass their current rivals.”

The player navigates a stormy electronic (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98) landscape in the Borges-inspired The Poet Tells of his Fame, while Schumann lies behind the powerfully argued Sonata for Cello and Piano, recipient of a 2011 BASCA British Composer Award. The sonata bears a joint dedication to Delphian artist Robert Irvine and to Erkki Lahesmaa “keepers,” as Sweeney calls them, “of the cello’s inner voice.” Irvine is joined by his Finnish colleague here in the 2008 duo The Tree o’ Licht, in which Gaelic psalmody is transmuted into deepest instrumental expressivity.

In this recording from June 2, 1971, which was recently discovered in Price Code: A19 Cherkassky’s own personal music archive, we (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98) hear him at the height of his powers, delivering a stunning live performance. But Jean-Guihen Queyras sees in this program a fascinating mirror effect, with each composer playing on contrasts to elucidate his intentions. Alongside the great Czech conductor Jirí Belohlávek leading the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Queyras reveals every facet of these Late Romantic works.

“Beyond his sterling technique, perfect intonation, and gorgeous tone, he has a way of articulating notes and phrases that makes the music feel like it’s dancing. There’s a lift and an élan to his bowing that springs the notes right off the page and sends them airborne.”

SCHUBERT Symphonies Nos.3 & 4 Freiburger Barockorchester Pablo Heras-Casado harmonia mundi • HMC 902154

IMPORT On his first recording for harmonia mundi, conductor Pablo HerasCasado, whose conducting career encompasses the great symphonic and operatic repertoire, historically informed performance and cuttingedge contemporary scores, offers a fresh look at the symphonies of Franz Schubert. Leading the period-instrument Freiburger Barockorchester, Heras-Casado pairs the light-hearted Symphony No.3 of 1815, which ends with a Rossinian tarantella, with the darker Symphony No.4, written one year later and looking more towards Beethoven. Echoing the fourth symphony’s subtitle, it is indeed tragic that this symphony, like all his others, was never played in public in Schubert’s lifetime. Principal Conductor of the Orchestra of St Luke’s since 2012, Heras-Casado makes his débuts with the Metropolitan Opera and New York Philharmonic during the 2013/14 season.

[PRIORITY RELEASE] Angela Hewitt (piano) Hyperion • CDA 67875 IMPORT Angela Hewitt’s recordings of French piano music have received the highest critical acclaim. For this release, she turns to Fauré, a French composer who is both serious and introspective, with a refinement that has led to him being relatively overlooked by some performers. In Angela Hewitt’s hands this music is an utter joy. This album includes the composer’s major work in the genre, the Thème et variations, along with a selection of Valses-caprices and Nocturnes. It ends with a more radiant piece from Fauré’s youth, the Ballade pour piano seul, Op.19, dedicated to Saint-Saëns.

Döhler and Dreyschock were contemporaries, both child prodigies and both hugely admired in their day. Döhler’s Piano Concerto is a lavishly ornamented virtuoso confection that requires a high-wire act from the soloist from start to finish. Dreyschock’s Morceau de concert features allusions to several Beethoven works while his Salut à Vienne is a lighthearted but highly effective showpiece. Chloë Hanslip (violin), Igor Tchetuev (piano) Hyperion • CDA 67963 IMPORT Better known as a composer of virtuoso piano music, Nikolai Medtner also wrote three violin sonatas, two of which are recorded here. The ‘Sonata Epica’ is one of the most ambitious and colossal works in the repertoire and without doubt one of the most important violin sonatas of the twentieth century. It draws deeply on Medtner’s Russian heritage, with intimations of orthodox chant and folk dances, and shows why Medtner was fleetingly regarded as one of Russia’s most progressive composers during the first decade of the twentieth century. The Violin Sonata No.1 is more understated and reminiscent of Fauré. Chloë Hanslip has proved herself an eloquent performer of the lesser-known Romantic violin repertoire, displaying rare commitment and resonant vitality.

Tallis’s career spans the reigns of four radically different and difficult monarchs, whose various attitudes to the religious questions of the day meant that each required different liturgies and different music to adorn them. Tallis excelled in every style, and this album contains examples of each, from the monumental Marian votive antiphon Salve intemerata virgo, to the modest Englishtexted settings of I call and cry to thee and Psalm translations by Elizabeth I’s Archbishop, Matthew Parker.

IMPORT Perrine Faillet has nourished her creative spirit with dance, theatre, sound poetry and performance aesthetics. A multifaceted artist, Faillet launched her alter-ego, Peau (Skin), with recordings made in her home studio. Three years after her first album, Peau returns with Archipel (Archipelago), a collection of new pieces conceived at her mountain retreat in Vercors and at the Farside Studio in Paris. Listening to this dreamy, mercurial music, you will see French chanson collide with electronic music and post-rock landscapes, revealing an extraordinary songwriter and performer, a genuine poetic and sonic explorer. To coincide with the release of her new album Archipel, Le Chant du Monde is simultaneously reissuing Peau’s début album Première Mue (first molt). It explores the landscape of her own mysterious and sensual universe, shedding and embedding pieces of herself along the delicate line where the personal meets the universal. Sung in both French and English, Peau’s songs magically encompass the entire spectrum of human senses and emotions.
