ONSLOW String Quartets Op.9 No.3, Op.10 No.2 & Op.21 No.3

IMPORT Successful and well-known during his lifetime, the French composer George Onslow (17841853) is virtually forgotten today. His 36 string quartets and 34 string quintets were held in the highest regard, and he was regularly placed in the front rank of composers. His work was admired by both Beethoven and Schubert, the latter modeling his own two-cello quintet (D956) on those of Onslow and not, as is so often claimed, on those of Boccherini. Schumann, perhaps the foremost music critic during the first part of the 19th century, regarded Onslow’s chamber music on a par with that of Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven. Ripe for rediscovery, this recording presents four of the composer’s String Quartets played by the Quatuor Ruggieri on period instruments.

November 2012

IMPORT Although the composers of the French baroque were remarkably prolific, they left us relatively little chamber music. Luckily, the few works extant are as well-written as those by Vivaldi or Bach and they provide listeners a new perspective on music of the period. François Couperin, the finest composer at the court of Louis XIV, wrote several masterworks of chamber music, including the elegant and beautiful collection of sonatas entitled Les Nations, performed here by the ensemble Les Ombres. Couperin greatly admired Italian baroque composers such as Corelli, and his sonatas demonstrate his lifelong commitment to uniting, in his music, the best of both French and Italian musical conventions.

Bezuidenhout plays Mozart concertos harmonia mundi

MOZART Piano Concertos K.453 & 482

Kristian Bezuidenhout (fortepiano), Freiburger Barockorchester, Petra Müllejans harmonia mundi • HMC 902147

D14opw0c@!$&@%s Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

IMPORT Mozart places melody at the very heart of his concertos. Introverted and sometimes uncertain at the start of K453, it is subsequently transmuted into birdsong — foreshadowing Papageno — and leads to a finale worthy of an opera buffa. Imbued with majesty in K482 (contemporary with Le nozze di Figaro), it takes on a tinge of bitterness in the work’s slow movement, before returning to more joyful melodic motifs, one of which will recur in Così fan tutte. Never have opera and concerto been so close. Partnering with the Freiburger Barockorchester, acclaimed fortepianist Kristian Bezuidenhout brings out all of the singing lines and sparkling bravura of these two great concertos.

“Bezuidenhout is a prince of the fortepiano, making it sing in melodic phrases as no other practitioner of this intractable instrument has done in my experience.” — THE LONDON TIMES

Shostakovich’s 15 symphonies and 15 string quartets rank him with Beethoven in terms of both the magnitude of the output and its depth and originality. The quartets were Shostakovich’s most personal works. Publicly buffeted by the capricious winds of the Stalinist government, in his quartets he used music to express his deepest and most personal feelings. This set provides an excellent overview of Shostakovich’s quartets, spanning from his first efforts in the genre to examples from his late period, where the music’s colors and spirit are imbued with a dark melancholy.

Aa34571c!&*^$[Q Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

IMPORT The matchless Takács Quartet return to Schubert. Their first disc on Hyperion — his Death and the Maiden and Rosamunde quartets — received unprecedentedly lavish critical acclaim, acknowledging a new modern benchmark for these works. Now they turn to perhaps the most hauntingly beautiful of all Schubert’s chamber works, the String Quintet — completed six weeks before the composer’s death. Schubert included a second cello in the texture, creating a sumptuously warm sound, a cradling intimacy. Here the Takács players are joined by cellist Ralph Kirshbaum. Also recorded here is the Quartettsatz: a fragment — of the highest quality — of a quartet in C minor abandoned by the composer.

“The Takács Quartet are matchless, their supreme artistry manifest at every level.” — THE GUARDIAN

Howard Shelley (piano), Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra Hyperion • CDA 67915

Aa34571c!&(!%ZP Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

IMPORT This 58th volume of the Romantic Piano Concer to series presents two composerpianists who contributed to the Hexaméron, Liszt’s collaborative piano extravaganza. Thalberg (who would be celebrating his 200th birthday in 2012) famously took part in a pianistic “duel” with Liszt, and was popularly acclaimed as the greatest pianist in the world during his lifetime. He only wrote one piano concerto, and that in his teens, but it is a brilliantly effective showpiece for virtuosity and stamina, the pianist’s hands barely leaving the piano. Johann Peter Pixis has now been consigned — perhaps unfairly — to the oblivion where so many early 19th-century composers dwell. These are world premiere recordings of his charming Piano Concerto and Piano Concertino. Howard Shelley, an undisputed master of the music of the early Romantic period, directs the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra from the keyboard with his usual insouciance and poise.

“Where others sound strenuous and hard-pressed Shelley is fluent and urbane, a true keyboard aristocrat free to concentrate on the elusive poetry that lies at the heart of so much fiery pianistic intricacy.” — GRAMOPHONE

IMPORT L’Avventura London and their director Zak Ozmo make their debut on Hyperion with a lusciously saucy album of Portuguese love songs from the eighteenth century. Described by a contemporary visitor as “voluptuous and bewitching,” these works have an uncertain genesis, but it is likely they reached Portugal from its overseas dominion of Brazil. Two highly contrasting styles predominate: one melancholic and lyrical, and the other bright and rhythmic, often with syncopated rhythms in the voice. Also interspersed are instrumental works from the period. The spirited players of L’Avventura London are joined by two Portuguese sopranos, Sandra Medeiros and Joana Seara, who are also early music specialists in their own right.

IMPORT Hyperion’s Strauss Lieder series continues to demonstrate that the composer’s achievements in this genre are among the most fascinating and accomplished of his works. This latest volume includes the delicious Schlechtes Wetter from Op.69 and the lovely — and unknown — Waldesfahrt from the same group. The delicately beautiful Malven, with which the recital ends, is known as Strauss’s “Fifth Last Song.” The central work recorded here, Krämerspiegel, owes its genesis to Strauss’s long-lasting and bitter dispute with the German music publishing industry. Roger Vignoles is the curator and pianist of this series, and also writes the informative booklet notes. Making her Hyperion debut is soprano Elizabeth Watts.

HINDEMITH Ludus Tonalis, Suite ‘1922’

IMPORT Previously Available as CDA 66824 (034571168241) Deleted April 2010 Paul Hindemith’s Ludus Tonalis has been called a “20th-century composer’s reappraisal of Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier.” However, its twelve fugues and their interludes are notable equally for their emotion as for their (indisputable) logic. The work represents a musical statement of Hindemith’s theories, yet in it we encounter one of the most adventurous works for solo piano of the twentieth century. The five movements of the Suite ‘1922’ are made up of stylized versions of American popular dance themes, each featuring Hindemith’s imaginative use of traditional harmony and Satie-like instructions to the performer: “Regard the piano here as an interesting percussion instrument.” Pianist John McCabe performs both works with his customary mix of precision and keen understanding of the contemporary mindset.

These two discs offer a compelling portrait of Michael Nyman’s skillfully written chamber music. The Irish Fidelio Trio are featured in a set of the complete Piano Trios. Each of Nyman’s trios has a programmatic element. Two are heard here in world première recordings. Poczatek is derived from Nyman’s score to the film of the same name. The Photography of Chance refers to the industrial reality in early Soviet photography. Nyman’s three String Quartets were not conceived as a series, as they owe their origins to three very different sets of circumstances. However when the composer heard them together on the 1991 Argo recording featuring the Balanescu Quartet reissued here, he realized that the works had an unintentional but unmistakable consistency of compositional approach.

Piano Classics presents two new offerings featuring lesser-known pianists. Alexander Ghindin is one of the foremost pianists in Russia today. Ghindin has been a winner in several international competitions including the Queen Elizabeth (2nd prize) and Cleveland Piano Competition (1st prize). This recital includes Stravinsky’s Petrouchka, Rachmaninov’s passionate and wistful Morceaux de fantaisie and Tchaikovsky’s Grande Sonate. German pianist Wolfram Schmitt-Leonardy is one of the leading pianists of his generation. His Chopin interpretations on this new recording breathe an air of improvisation, vision and imagination. Listening to his interpretation of the Préludes evokes a synesthetic experience: the sounds, views and smells of Mallorca (where they were composed) merge into one feeling of beauty, bliss and melancholy.

Neveu plays Brahms BRAHMS Violin Concerto Op.77

Ginette Neveu (violin), Orchestre National de France, Roger Désormière Tahra • TAH 731

D50rqw9c)&#! $s Price Code: A18 (Suggested Retail Price: $18.98)

IMPORT At age fifteen, Ginette Neveu became a worldwide celebrity when she won the Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition over 180 contestants, including the future virtuoso David Oistrakh, who finished second, and Henri Temianka, who finished third. Neveu was immediately signed to an extensive touring contract that took her to many of the world’s leading concert halls. Noted for her intensity, power and impeccable sonority, Neveu is recognized as one of the great violinists of her era despite her tragic death at only age 30. Her discographic testament is remarkable, but also cut tragically short. Luckily, a number of live recordings have survived, mainly produced by European radio stations. This remastered recording from 1948 featuring the Brahms concerto was taken from a German radio broadcast from Baden-Baden.

E0q02wic^& @ %s Price Code: A24 (Suggested Retail Price: $24.98)

IMPORT Wergo’s essential reissues from their famous 1960s era Studio Reihe series continue with a recording of music by Karlheinz Stockhausen. The composer’s Zyklus für einen Schlagzeuger is offered in two different versions performed by two different performers, Max Neuhaus and Christoph Caskel. Stockhausen originally wrote the work for the Kranichstein Percussion Competition in 1959. He deliberately did not determine the length of the piece’s performance, so as not to be overly specific concerning the work’s multiplicity of meanings, the different characters of various performances, or the technical abilities of the players. For Klavierstück X, performed here by the legendary pianist Frederic Rzewski, Stockhausen combined two extremes. The work is based on the attempt to mediate between relative disorder and order, chaos and balance.

Da Lontano Music of Scelsi, Cage, Stockhausen & Nono

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel Trombonist Mike Svoboda’s Da Lontano (from a distance) surveys rarely heard works written by four heroes of new music that are ‘outside’ of the ordained list of masterworks by these composers. Each has an element of indeterminacy, which allows Svoboda to place a personal stamp on the performances. Scelsi said he received the music for his Mantram — Canto anonimo from other spheres, merely acting as an intermediary between two worlds. For Solo for Sliding Trombone, excerpted from Cage’s Piano Concerto, Svoboda devised a version for eight trombones which he plays all by himself. Signal zur Invasion I is excerpted from Stockhausen’s opera Dienstag aus Licht. It consists of 126 fanfares from the opera. In Nono’s Post-prae-ludium per Donau, the sound of Svoboda’s tuba is multiplied and rearranged by electronic musician Holger Stenschke to create a unique spatial polyphony.

HENZE Kammermusik 1958, Apollo et Hyazinthus, Canzona

Nicole Pieper (alto), Clemens Löschmann (tenor), Maximilian Mangold (guitar), Jan Croonenbroeck (harpsichord), Ensemble Horizonte, Jörg-Peter Mittmann Wergo • WER 6746

November 2012

IMPORT Hans Werner Henze has always had a strong connection to literature, most particularly Friedrich Hölderlin and Georg Trakl — poets that represent individuality, complexity, the sensitive exploration of feeling and vulnerability to the utmost degree. For a long time, the late works by Hölderlin had been labeled as products of the madness of the last decades of his life. The text of his soaring hymn In lieblicher Bläue was set by Henze in his Kammermusik 1958. The twelvetone work Apollo et Hyazinthus is based upon poetry by Trakl. The work exists in a rarified space between chamber music, symphonic poem, harpsichord concerto and orchestral song. Both the title and the music of Henze’s septet Canzona per sette strumenti is reminiscent of the 16th and 17th centuries. This fascinating sampler of Henze’s music is performed by the Ensemble Horizonte under the direction of Jörg-Peter Mittmann.

This trio of SACDs from Analogue Productions continues the label’s survey of the recordings of Norah Jones. Winner of eight 2003 GRAMMY® awards, Come Away With Me was Jones’ breakthrough triumph. On this audiophile SACD remastering, hits like the signature cut “Don’t Know Why” have never sounded clearer and more sensual. On The Fall, Jones’ fourth album, she experimented with different sounds and a new set of collaborators, including noted producer and engineer Jacquire King, who has worked with Kings of Leon, Tom Waits and Modest Mouse. Little Broken Hearts, Jones’ fifth album, was created in collaboration with producer Brian “Danger Mouse” Burton, best known as the producing ace for Gnarls Barkley with singer Cee Lo Green. Jones and Danger Mouse wrote all of the material for the album together at the producer’s studio in Los Angeles, and the duo performed all of the instruments themselves.

2 CDs for the Price of 1 IMPORT / File in: Pop After the resounding success of the label’s 2011 release Judy Garland — The London Studio Recordings, 1957-1964, First Hand Records and producer Jonathan Summers are proud to present the first legitimate release of the World’s Greatest Entertainer in her celebrated concert at the Tuschinski Theatre in Amsterdam. The midnight performance of December 10, 1960 was broadcast live by AVRO, the Dutch radio network. A specially-priced two disc set, The Amsterdam Concert — December 1960 includes the full program of thirty songs as performed by Judy Garland plus interviews with Garland, Sid Luft and conductor Norrie Paramor. The booklet is lavishly illustrated with unreleased photographs of Garland performing on stage at the Tuschinski Theatre. Garland was at the peak of her career here, only four months after The London Studio Recordings and four months before her famous Carnegie Hall concert.

“That Judy Garland continues to inspire artists and fans alike, more than 35 years after her death, is no great surprise. Her powerful pipes and passionate approach to song, were coupled with the charisma that an awestruck colleague once dubbed ‘a force field that could reach the back of the house.” — NPR

IMPORT File in: Blues / Roots “Mystic-ssippi” blues man Harry Manx has been called an “essential link” between the music of East and West, creating musical short stories that wed the emotionally rich tradition of the Blues with the spiritual depth of classical Indian ragas. Manx forged this distinctive style by studying at the feet of the masters, first as a sound man in the blues clubs of Toronto during his formative years and then under a rigorous five-year tutelage with Vishwa Mohan Bhatt in India. Manx’s blending of blues, roots, Indian and folk sounds follows in the footsteps of such pioneering work as that of Joe Harriott and John Mayer and their Indo-Jazz Fusions in the 60s, John McLaughlin’s work with Shakti in the 70s, and Ashwan Batish’s innovative Sitar Power debut in 1987. Isle of Manx, a mid-priced “best-of” compilation taken from his first nine albums, is a good starting point for new listeners who will soon discover that Manx’s unique sound is hard to forget and deliciously addictive to listen to.

“Manx’s real skill lays in creating a rare musical place where blues, country, folk and Indian classical music co-exist as some spirit force.” November 2012

Rabih Abou-Khalil World Village • 479078

IMPORT File in: Jazz Born and raised in the cosmopolitan climate of Beirut in the sixties and seventies, Rabih Abou-Khalil has asserted himself in the jazz avant-garde as a composer as well as an instrumentalist. With his unconstrained, yet daring approach to classical Arabic music, Abou-Khalil has found a musical language entirely his own, spanning jazz, classical and world traditions. The music of Hungry People is unique and yet strangely familiar, delivered with a touch of humor despite the recent economic, social and political upheavals that inspired it.

Fresh from many acclaimed festival performances on their European tour, the Pulsar Trio offer their début album Erpelparka Suite, a recording flush with danceable, hypnotic, ambient compositions. Having lived in over twenty countries since his teens, Yeshe considers the world to be his home. At an early age, Yeshe discovered he had a special affinity for African music. He performed with several percussion ensembles and later played in funk, reggae and blues bands. The star of his album World CitiZen, Yeshe’s solo recording début, is the Mbira — a traditional African percussion instrument. Accompanied by lap steel, banjo, Hammond and backing vocals, Yeshe’s songs range from the gentle to the spirited, fusing complex percussive structure with layerings of melody and lyrics, from overtly African to anywhere in the world. Yeshe’s Roots & Wings came out of a collaboration with world renowned South African reggae artist Tefo Hlaele. Co-produced by GRAMMY ® nominated producer Kamal Engels, the album draws upon a rich reservoir of Yeshe’s past and present musical cohorts, including Harry Manx (Canada’s most awarded blues artist and long time collaborator with Yeshe), Ganga Giri (Australia’s international Didjeridoo/dance export) and Avishai Barnatan (founding member of the Israeli band Sheva).
