“Melnikov brings out the pieces’ personalities better than anyone I’ve heard... [His] polyphonic clarity is superior as well…And his playing never lacks color, either — his command of shading is enviable... If I had to, I’d sell any other set I had to buy this one.”

“[Gergiev] affirms his versatility with compelling interpretations of three Ravel staples. His Daphnis et Chloe is voluble and vividly colored. While the conductor never overlooks the smallest wonder of Ravel’s nonpareil orchestration, Gergiev’s reading is boldly assertive, and this is a ballet — danceable.”

Table of contents

On The Rose of Sharon, vocalist Joel Frederiksen is accompanied by the Ensemble Phoenix in a program of rarely heard American church music from the 18th and 19th centuries. The focus is on a religious movement called the ‘Great Awakening’ and the disc includes songs of the Quakers, Shakers and the Moravian Brethren. The release takes its name from a passage in the Song of Solomon that was set by William Billings in his 1778 book, “The Singing Master’s Assistant.” Billings is widely considered to be the “father of American choral music.”

IMPORT The Sei concerti per il cembalo concertato were the outcome of a period of intensive work between 1770 and 1772 shortly after Carl Philipp Emanuel arrived in Hamburg. Introducing one of his most exciting recording ventures, Andreas Staier explains the incredible diversity in unity of these works, “whose arrangement is not linear, but concentric. One has the impression that Bach wanted to set a series of musical riddles which constantly force the audience to take a critical distance from its own listening.” Staier is joined by the Freiburger Barockorchester in this fascinating disc of keyboard concertos.

David Grimal (violin), Les Dissonances Aparté • AP 011

IMPORT The spirit of Les Dissonances is one of bringing together disparate worlds. The ensemble, which varies in size according to repertoire, plays without a conductor and highlights contemporary and past composers with absolute freedom in its choice of programs. Such autonomy enables the musicians to fulfill their first objective, which is to reach new audiences that might have been intimidated by classical music in the past, and enable them to see the major works of the repertoire in a different light. On this new CD, leader David Grimal mixes Vivaldi and Piazzolla in a fascinating program of music with similar themes.

The famous eighth quartet is a quasi-autobiographical work that evokes the composer’s struggle against the Soviet regime. The String Quartet No.9 and the Two Pieces for String Quartet, lesser known, are rich with the signature emotional characteristics of Shostakovich’s style — pain and suffering mixed with equal doses of sardonic humor.

Marc-André Hamelin (piano) Hyperion • CDA 67760

Aa34571c!& ^)VL Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

IMPORT Hyperion presents a major Liszt recital from one of today’s most admired recording artists. The Piano Sonata in B minor is undoubtedly one of the peaks of the repertoire and recordings are suitably copious. However, when an artist of Marc-André Hamelin’s virtuoso pedigree wishes to tackle it, no excuse need be made for an additional version. The recital opens with a lesser-known masterwork, the Fantasy and Fugue on B-A-C-H, and for light relief there is Liszt’s scintillating supplement to his Italian Année de Pèlerinage, the three pieces of Venezia e Napoli. The emotional core of the disc is Liszt’s intensely spiritual Bénédiction du Dieu dans la solitude.

Romantic Piano Concerto Vol.53 REGER Piano Concerto in F minor, Op.114 STRAUSS Burleske in D minor

Marc-André Hamelin (piano), Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Ilan Volkov Hyperion • CDA 67635

Aa34571c!&^#%WM Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

IMPORT The Reger Piano Concerto has a formidable reputation — dense, harmonically complex and with far too many notes for the average pianist. Who better then to decipher it than Marc-André Hamelin? In his hands, this rarely recorded behemoth reveals both passion and a lyricism so often lost in lesser performances. He is wonderfully partnered by Ilan Volkov and the RundfunkSinfonieorchester Berlin, who share the pianist’s desire to elucidate an often misunderstood work. While the Reger concerto comes from the end of his career, the Strauss Burleske is a product of that composer’s prodigious youth. This ebullient work has long been a Hamelin ‘party-piece,’ and he plays it with an unmatched brilliance that surely captures the essence of this humorous music and will have listeners on the edges of their seats.

GÓRECKI String Quartets Nos.1-3

2 CDs for the Price of 1 IMPORT Henryk Górecki’s intriguing String Quartets, all commissions from the Kronos Quartet, signified a new creative phase in his music. The stark contrasts that had been at the heart of Górecki’s compositional thinking in the 1950s and 1960s reemerged in his chamber music of the mid 1980s and are prevalent in these works. Fans of Górecki will be familiar with the compositional devices employed such as open fifths, sustained rocking motifs, and the juxtaposition of dissonance and consonance. In these distinctive quartets both Beethoven and Szymanowski’s well-documented influences on the composer are apparent as well as his fascination with the folk cultures of Southern Poland, with the frequent incorporation of folk derived themes. The Royal String Quartet, renowned for the championing of music from their homeland, display an astonishing range of color, finesse and attack in these intelligent interpretations.

CONCERT REVIEW “Virtuoso attention to detail and stylistic élan were on show from the start in a pungent performance of Debussy’s three orchestral sketches, La Mer.” — THE TIMES

IMPORT • SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD Valery Gergiev has been performing Debussy’s music regularly with the LSO since he became Principal Conductor in 2007. For his latest LSO Live release, he presents his first recordings of three Debussy favorites, including a sensational performance of La mer. Widely considered one of the twentieth century’s most innovative and influential composers, Debussy was a “musical impressionist,” although it was a term he disliked. Despite running to little over ten minutes in duration, the sublime Prélude à l’aprèsmidi d’un faune is regarded as one of the most important and revolutionary of musical works. La mer was completed ten years later whilst Debussy was living in England and is a spectacular orchestral showpiece. Jeux, one of Debussy’s final orchestral works, was written for Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes.

“The firebrand Russian conductor Valery Gergiev has risen to classical music’s equivalent of a rock star, as much for his swagger and rugged style as the drama he frames around his performances.”

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD For the third release in his Shostakovich symphony cycle, Valery Gergiev again couples two works from different stages in the composer’s career. Although Shostakovich’s symphonies are usually highly programmatic, the third and tenth symphonies are among his most enigmatic works. The third was first performed in January 1930, its final movement setting a text by Semyon Isaakovich Kirsanov praising May Day and the revolution. Shostakovich stated that the work, “expresses the spirit of peaceful reconstruction,” yet much of the music is dark and somber in tone. The tenth is one of his most popular and frequently heard works. First performed in December 1953, the great Russian soprano Galina Vishnevskaya claimed that the symphony was, “a composer’s testament of misery, forever damning a tyrant.”

Most of Mahler’s sketches had been published by 1924, and Cooke discovered to his surprise that detailed study revealed much more than the incomplete and fragmentary work he had believed it to be. The BBC agreed to include the tenth in its complete cycle of the symphonies in the form of a detailed illustrated talk. The event, preserved on this recording, took place on December 19, 1960. Nearly all of the symphony was performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra under Berthold Goldschmidt. The critical reaction was positive, but Mahler’s widow, who had given her blessing to the idea, banned all future performances without having heard any of the music. Eventually persuaded to listen to a tape of the broadcast, she was so moved by hearing it that she rescinded the ban. The first complete performance, heard here, took place on August 13, 1964 at the BBC Proms with Berthold Goldschmidt conducting the London Symphony Orchestra.

“Several other live Klemperer Mahler Seconds are extant. None, however, catches so memorably the unbridled force of Klemperer’s commitment to the symphony and to the man who wrote it.” — GRAMOPHONE
