Andreas Staier plays CPE Bach The Sei concerti per il cembalo concertato were the outcome of a period of intensive work between 1770 and 1772, shortly after Carl Philipp Emanuel arrived in Hamburg. Introducing one of his most exciting recording ventures, Andreas Staier explains the incredible diversity in unity of these works, “whose arrangement is not linear, but concentric. One has the impression that Bach wanted to set a series of musical riddles which constantly force the audience to take a critical distance from its own listening.”

“Fink’s singing is always warm, elegant and thoughtful, with sensitivity to the text and a very personal point of view.” — OPERA NEWS

Closely associated with the folklore of the Balkans, the musical tradition of Slovenia also has a Romantic branch born at the confluence of the Alps and the Adriatic, between Austria and Italy. Very attached to their origins (their parents are Slovenian), Bernarda Fink and Marcos Fink have selected the most representative songs and duets of a style which, around the turn of the 20th century, combined the poetic rigor of the great European musical centers — the influence of the lied is obvious — with the expression of its own identity.

BACH Motets

Vocalconsort Berlin, Marcus Creed harmonia mundi • HMC 902079

Hk948 1c(*$*@YO Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

“Marcus Creed has succeeded in directing performances of utmost clarity without sacrificing expression and flexibility.”

The Motet is the oldest compositional genre in European polyphonic art music. Its history can be followed without interruption from the 12th century to the present day. The form was regular part of liturgical services in the two principle churches of Leipzig where JS Bach was employed from 1723 until his death in 1750. Scholars are divided as to the purpose of the six Motets. Though most of them were thought to be funeral music, they cover a lot of ground in terms of creativity, originality, choral and vocal techniques. Marcus Creed and the Vocalconsort Berlin offer small scale, intimate readings of these evergreen masterpieces.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD Mozart was an avowed Freemason, and his connection to the order became integrated with his compositional output. In 1785 he composed the Maurerische Trauermusik (Masonic Funeral Music). It was written in honor of two deceased brethren — Franz, Count Esterhazy de Galantha and Georg August, Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Mozart associated certain musical motifs with Masonic ideas. The rising interval of the major sixth and various rhythmic embodiments of Masonic ritual knocks were among the elements he used as musical symbols. Although the Requiem is not specifically Masonic in nature, there are aspects present including some of these musical motifs. This 1991 recording bears the signature of Jordi Savall’s talent as a conductor — the intensity of emotion, clarity of structure and the emphasis on singing musical lines. This new multichannel re-mastering sheds new light on a true gem of the back catalog.

Very few of Grainger’s recordings are currently available and indeed, many have never been transferred to CD before. Latvian composer Eriks Ešenvalds’ Passion & Resurrection for strings, choir and soloists is a powerful meditation on the story of Christ’s cr ucifixion and resurrection. Eschewing the single narrative perspective that characterizes the great Passion settings of the past, the composer has assembled an interlocking mosaic of texts from the gospels, from Byzantine and Roman liturgies and from the Old Testament. Stephen Layton’s commitment to new Baltic music is well-known and he has a deep understanding of the musical language of the area as reflected by performances of great integrity and passion. LISZT Funeral Odes, From the Cradle to the Grave, Two Episodes from Lenau’s Faust

Aa34571c!&*%^VL Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

As part of Liszt’s anniversary year, Hyperion turns to some of the c o m p o s e r’s l e a s t re c o rd e d a n d performed works. Liszt’s Trois Odes funèbres were composed between 1860 and 1866 and exist in a variety of versions — for orchestra, for piano solo and for piano duet. Although it is quite clear from the original manuscripts that Liszt intended these works to be performed as a cycle, it is rarely done. This release is the first recording of the complete set. From the Cradle to the Grave was based on a drawing by the Hungarian artist Mihály Zichy (1827-1906). The artist depicted the three stages of existence — birth, the struggle for being and death, the cradle of the life to come. The Faust legend preoccupied Liszt for much of his life, and inspired the composer’s most famous orchestral work, the Faust Symphony, along with Zwei Episoden aus Lenaus Faust, which contains some of the composer’s most thrillingly atmospheric music.

Perhaps the first truly Romantic piano sonatas, they influenced the next generation of German composers such as Mendelssohn and Schumann. Though these works are large scale and virtuosic, they are rarely recorded. The program also includes the once hugely popular Invitation to the Dance, a work that has become better known in the orchestration by Berlioz. The disc received widespread acclaim — it was an Editor’s Choice in Gramophone and voted CD of the Year by listeners of BBC Radio 3’s CD Review. It is now being re-released, coupled with a new recording of Walton’s spectacular oratorio Belshazzar’s Feast. These works, which were written consecutively, helped Walton consolidate his reputation as the most exciting British composer of his generation. Belshazzar’s Feast, a superbly crafted oratorio, vividly depicts the story of Babylon’s excesses and subsequent downfall, brilliantly colored by the orchestral forces, including two brass bands. Similarly effervescent, volcanic sentiments simmer beneath the surface of the symphony, conveying the tensions of the 1930s whilst remaining timeless in its appeal.

On this second volume, he is joined by Alice Coote and Ashley Wass in the Two Songs op.91, and takes the solo viola part — the clarinet role — in the Op.115 Quintet. Richard Mühlfeld, the clarinetist for whom Brahms wrote his two sonatas and the quintet, managed to coax Brahms out of self-imposed retirement, and the result is the wonderful Indian summer of late chamber works. Joseph Joachim remarked that the clarinet parts would work well transcribed for viola. Brahms lavished much care on these arrangements, and they are valuable additions to the repertoire of the viola.

In conjunction with the Orchestra’s 30th Anniversary Season, Music Director Nicholas McGegan and Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra announce the launch of the ensemble’s own recording label, Philharmonia Baroque Productions. The label’s début release showcases the late Lorraine Hunt Lieberson in a live 1995 recording of Berlioz’s Les Nuits d’été and a live 1991 recording of arias from Handel’s Giulio Cesare, Ottone, Arianna, Radamisto, and Agrippina. Hunt Lieberson had a long and fruitful relationship with McGegan and Philharmonia Baroque. The Berlioz is the last of seven acclaimed recordings she made with the orchestra and the first time she ever sang the full Berlioz song cycle in performance. Lorraine was in her element, and the result was splendid. These incredibly moving performances are now available to a wide audience for the first time.

“Hunt Lieberson’s sings with refreshing honesty and selfeffacement. The result is a level of musical truth that is rarely encountered.” — OPERA NEWS

Carl Schuricht was a specialist in the Austro-German repertory, reveling in everything from Franz Schubert to Gustav Mahler. Both technically rigorous and whimsically light hearted, the nomadic conductor has produced many memorable recordings with some of the world’s greatest orchestras. Here Schuricht offers a fiery performance of Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No.9.

Unorthodox yet always fascinating, Hermann Scherchen considered routine a deadly enemy of art and he avoided falling into the trap of descriptive music. As is such, the Four Seasons’ descriptive sonnets that were attributed to the composer are not referenced here. After listening to this version, it is difficult to imagine that anyone will continue to consider this Vivaldi work as minor or negligible.

3 CDs for the Price of 2 With Earle Brown — A Life in Music — Volume 5, Wergo has once again dug up treasures of contemporary music from the 1960s and 1970s. The 3-CD set not only contains one of the first recordings of Charles Ives’s Concord Sonata by Aloys Kontarsky but is also a testimony to the virtuosity of Severino Gazzelloni who is, without doubt, one of the greatest flutists of the 20th century. In addition, it contains music from the group Sonic Arts Union with the four pioneers of electronic music: David Behrman, Robert Ashley, Alvin Lucier and Gordon Mumma. The 18 LPs of Earle Brown’s legendary Contemporary Sound Series, recorded between 1960 and 1973, have become a rarity in great demand since the series was discontinued in 1978. These rare and historically important recordings have been carefully digitized and re-mastered by the Earle Brown Music Foundation. Volume 4 will be issued in the coming months.

On the occasion of Helmut Lachenmann’s 75th birthday, Wergo presents a re-release of the reference recordings of his works Accanto, Consolation I and Kontrakadenz. “Here we must depart from a conception that only accepts the ‘showy’ side of sound, usually promoted as a medium for a certain kind of spurious social ostentation,” the conductor Clytus Gottwald wrote about Lachenmann’s “sound realism.” Lachenmann creates, “music that removes the false aspects of sounds by returning sound to its natural realm.”

Unexpected events rupture continuity; they occur suddenly and they create a moment, a now, in which the flow of history dissolves into “suddenness.” The question posed by David Lang in the title of his melodrama Are you experienced? is rhetorical in nature, given that the piece takes a speculative look at the unexpected end of a concert evening. Philippe Boesmans, best known as a composer of operas, surprises us with a Biedermeier sextet. For Richard Barrett, interference becomes a structural principle, and Luca Francesconi knows the formula for driving the formulaic out of music.

All Regions, 139 minutes File in: World / India Virtuoso sitar player Ravi Shankar was the first ambassador of Indian music, which he popularized in the West starting in 1956. Throughout his long career he has raised the question of the transmission of his art. Unlike Western classical music, Indian music is transmitted orally. This documentary shows Shankar on his last visit to Europe, where he chose to give for the first time a music lesson to the public of the Salle Pleyel. The director has also filmed his daily work at the Ravi Shankar Center in Delhi, India, with his followers and his daughter Anoushka. This young modern woman, living alternately in India and America, shares her father’s purpose with equal conviction: to respect the essence of classical Indian music while also opening new horizons. The perspectives of a musicologist also illuminate this fascinating lesson.

Also featured are Alpha Blondy and Tiken Jah Fakoly — two powerhouse reggae artists that have been a major Ivorian contribution to modern African music. The set has only one track per artist though, so there is plenty of room for the lesser known acts to shine on this superb intro to one of West Africa’s most musical nations. Exploring the Gypsy Swing revival Swing For Ninine Complete Romane Vol.1 Romane Frémeaux • FA 538

D44ioy0c@%#*@^s Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

File in: Jazz Although Django Reinhardt’s Gypsy Swing legacy has a worldwide following today, we shouldn’t overlook the years when the style went into decline after his death in 1953. During years of oblivion, Django’s music was handed down in trailer parks and caravans, played at gypsy-gatherings and swapped by collectors of rare records. Thanks to a few devoted musicians, this music was saved from darkness. Romane was one of the pioneers in the revival of Django’s style. Today, Frémeaux celebrates Romane’s importance with this first volume of a complete set of his recordings entitled Swing for Ninine.

Omar Sosa Otá • OTA 1022

Gj164 4c!)@ @[Q Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

File in: Jazz Calma is Omar Sosa’s fifth solo piano recording. It is a work of singular artistry, featuring Omar’s unique and original approach to the genre. The CD is comprised of 13 solo piano improvisations, fusing stylistic elements of jazz, classical new music, ambient and electronica. As the title implies, the overall feeling is relaxed and introspective, the intent being to evoke a mood of reflection and contemplation. The recording features a rarely heard combination of acoustic piano, Fender Rhodes electric piano and various electronic effects and sampled sounds. All of these instruments were recorded live together in the studio, without overdubs — the artist interacting spontaneously, in real-time, with the various sonic elements. Rhythmically, the feeling of the CD is unhurried and meditative. Sensations of floating and suspension of time prevail. We can imagine the melodic sensibilities of Erik Satie meeting those of Pierre Boulez.

“Sosa’s pianisms evoke distant echoes of McCoy Tyner’s power, Keith Jarrett’s improvisational flights of fancy, and Thelonious Monk’s angular harmonies, transforming the piano into 88 well-tuned drums.” — THE VILLAGE VOICE
