NEW RELEASE HIGHLIGHTS Singers dominate harmonia mundi's priority titles for November. First up is the solo début by countertenor Bejun Mehta. A protégé of René Jacobs, Mehta sings arias by Handel on his new release entitled Ombra cara (p.3). Next up, star tenor Mark Padmore is joined by the extraordinary fortepianist Kristian Bezuidenhout in a disc featuring lieder by Schumann (p.5). Also on harmonia mundi, clarinetist Jon Manasse returns, accompanied once again by pianist Jon Nakamatsu, with a disc of American music for clarinet featuring works by Bernstein and Gershwin (p.4). With The Celtic Viol II, Alia Vox offers a welcome follow-up to Jordi Savall's acclaimed performances of music of the British isles (p.8). Channel Classics offers key releases from two of its top artists. The Netherlands Bach Ensemble performs Bach's Magnificat (p.10) and Iván Fischer leads the Budapest Festival Orchestra in symphonies by Beethoven (p.11). New on DVD this month is John Eliot Gardiner's eagerly awaited Carmen, with Anna Caterina Antonacci in the title role (p.18). Fresh off its Gramophone Record of the Year award, Hyperion continues their 30th anniversary celebrations with three very special releases. Angela Hewitt plays Schumann's Davidsbündlertänze (p.21), Paul Lewis and Steven Osborne play Schubert (p.23) and the inexhaustible Romantic Piano Concerto Series hits volume 52 (p.24). Last but not least, one of today's most in-demand conductors, Valery Gergiev, is featured in LSO Live's new recording of orchestral music by Ravel (p.28).

“A ballsy, risk-taking singer, he flings coloratura about like weaponry and pushes himself to his limits in his quest for musical and dramatic expression. You are conscious of being in the presence of greatness.” — THE GUARDIAN

November 2010

Includes Bonus DVD - All Zones/ 15 minutes/ 16:9 Format If Handel’s arias enjoy such success today, perhaps it is because they lie at the intersection between past and present, light and shadow. In his first recital for harmonia mundi, Bejun Mehta has performs selections from the repertoire of the famous castrato Senesino. From shadow (“Ombra cara”) to light (“Sento la gioia”), this album re-introduces Mehta’s prodigious talents as a solo artist. Also included is a bonus DVD with interviews and video of the recording sessions. Mehta made his first record in 1983 for Delos when he was a boy soprano. Upon hearing that CD, Leonard Bernstein was moved to comment, “It is hard to believe the richness and maturity of musical understanding in this adolescent boy.” He was also honored by the magazine Stereo Review as the Debut Recording Artist of the Year. After his voice changed, the multi-talented Mehta excelled both as a cellist and a producer, winning a 1997 GRAMMY® award for his work on Janos Starker’s final recording of the Bach Cello Suites. Mehta again took up singing in 1998, inspired by countertenor David Daniels, and has now become one of the most sought-after countertenors of his generation.

Aa93046c&%)*@YO Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

Acclaimed duo partners Jon Manasse and Jon Nakamatsu turn their attention to American composers in this jazz-inflected program of music for clarinet and piano. Bernstein’s sonata was his first published work. It is a stylish blend of neo-classical formalism and Bernstein’s keen understanding of popular sensibilities. Gershwin is represented here in two arrangements by James Cohn, first of the evergreen Preludes for piano, followed by a transcription of the iconic song I Got Rhythm from the musical Girl Crazy as the disc’s encore. Also featured are two world premiere recordings - John Novacek’s 4 Rags for 2 Jons, a modern take on the style made popular by Scott Joplin, and jazz clarinetist Paquito D’Rivera’s The Cape Cod Files, written in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Cape Cod Chamber Music festival, of which Jon Manasse and Jon Nakamatsu are Artistic Co-Directors.

“Jon Manasse’s beautiful legato and Jon Nakamatsu’s incisive pianism are a delight.”

This prestige set brings together the three Baroque music recordings made by Alexandre Tharaud for harmonia mundi between 2001 and 2007. At a time when most recordings of Rameau, Bach and Couperin are played on period instruments, the French pianist has masterfully absorbed the numerous discoveries made in the field of period performance practice over the last thirty years, while simultaneously making these time-hallowed works sound genuinely contemporary. This is a trilogy which has already enjoyed unparalleled success.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD All the music on this new SACD from the Netherlands Bach Society is associated with the festival of Christmas. Bach wrote the cantata Unser Mund sei voll Lachens for morning service on Christmas Day 1725, and the first version of the Magnificat for Christmas Day 1723, seven months after the Leipzig town council appointed him cantor of the Thomaskirche. It would hardly be exaggerating to say that Bach thus presented his visiting card to his new employer. According to the Bach scholar Christoph Wolff, the work is his, “first really large-scale and complex piece of church music.” Christmas was not the only occasion to sing the Magnificat text, however, for it was also a standard part of the vespers liturgy. This may explain why Bach made a second version, heard here, some years later. For this recording, in keeping with the tradition of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Jos van Veldhoven has interspersed Bach’s Magnificat with other Christmas-themed music from the period.

“Very few conductors can match Fischer’s extraordinary ability to search out and illuminate the most subtle and transient details of scoring, tempi and dynamics without sacrificing dramatic momentum and impact.” — ENJOY THE MUSIC

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD Iván Fischer leads the Budapest Festival Orchestra in the first release of a new Beethoven symphony cycle for Channel Classics. The fourth and sixth are two fundamentally different symphonies - both works explore feelings from an entirely different point of view. The fourth is about human feelings and moods - obsession, love, happiness, fun and wit. The sixth is about feelings that nature awakens in us - calmness, meditation and thankfulness. The creative process in making these recordings was quite open. Fischer discovered that the fourth sounds better with natural horns and trumpets, and for the Pastorale, he used a unique seating arrangement with the winds scattered among the strings. The intent was to have each soloist surrounded by musicians playing the flow of Beethoven’s nature music. After the storm, when we hear the first tentative call of the clarinet, answered by the horn from a different mountain, as it were, Fischer found it appropriate to use a solo violin, which is gradually joined by the whole orchestra.

Antonacci’s extraordinary vocal timbre and superb acting skills have enabled her to perform a vast and varied repertoire in the world’s most important theatres. She made her Covent Garden debut in a new production of Carmen in 2008 with Antonio Pappano and recently performed a selection of Canteloube’s Chants d’Auvergne at the BBC Proms. Probably the most Francophile of English conductors, John Eliot Gardiner returned to the Opéra Comique in Paris for this much-acclaimed production last year. It was broadcast live to fifty theatres in France and Switzerland and also recorded for television. This followed an exciting collaboration that began with Chabrier’s opera bouffe L’Etoile, which opened the new theatre at the Opéra Comique in December 2007. LISZT The Complete Songs Vol.1

Ma hew Polenzani (tenor), Julius Drake (piano) Hyperion • CDA 67782

Aa34571c!& *@XN Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

The start of another Hyperion Lieder series is always cause for celebration. In advance of his bicentenary in 2011, the label turns to a composer whose songs were considered insignificant for well over a century. A regular collaborator with some of Europe’s best singers, Liszt used song as a compositional laboratory in which to experiment with ‘Zukunftsmusik,’ or ‘music of the future.’ A cosmopolitan artist who traveled prodigiously, he chose song texts written both by great poets and amateurs, the latter often aristocrats from Liszt’s glittering social circles. He created songs that changed the very definition of the genre, that are a bridge to such later masters as Wolf and Strauss. This first volume in the series features the American tenor Matthew Polenzani who has been astounding Met opera audiences in recent years. He is accompanied by the curator of the series, Julius Drake.

”The paramount quality of Angela Hewitt’s piano playing is the joy it communicates. Underpinning it there is incontrovertible intellectual rigour; and there are great reserves of wisdom and technical finesse.”

Angela Hewitt has earned a richly deserved reputation for her interpretations of Bach and the Baroque, and something of that characteristic clarity illuminates her Schumann performances. Her first disc of this repertoire was praised for its seemingly effortless but always adventurous interpretation. This second volume, containing some of the composer’s most bewitchingly beautiful music, should be no less lauded.

Although Reger’s music has partly recovered from its once unfashionable reputation, much of this prolific composer’s work still remains underperformed. Hyperion’s new disc from the chamber choir Consortium offers a chance to redress the balance, both by bringing to light an aspect of Reger’s output that has been relatively neglected, and by demonstrating that the important influences on him were not just musical but literary. Like his near contemporaries, Mahler, Strauss, Wolf and Zemlinsky, Reger responded deeply and imaginatively to the German Romantic poetic tradition. The works recorded here set many of the same poets with a sensitivity and intuitive understanding that belie Reger’s reputation for stodgy academicism.

The Royal Holloway Choir’s debut recording of music by Dubra received a rapturous response from the critics. Now the group offers a second volume of Baltic delights in the sumptuous music of Vytautas Miskinis. His music, while bearing identifiable Lithuanian roots, is a synthesis of different influences. It has an essentially diatonic approach but with much overlaying of harmonies and colored cluster-chords. What makes the music unmistakably Lithuanian is the influence of folk-song genres. The overall effect is luscious, radiant and exotic. This music is passionately performed by these talented young singers and sensitively recorded in a generous church acoustic.

Steven Osborne (piano), Paul Lewis (piano) Hyperion • CDA 67665

Aa34571c!&^ %+U Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

Schubert is unusual and indeed unique among composers in that some of his greatest works are written for piano duet. He wrote as much music for duet as for solo piano, and it reaches emotional depths that take this genre far away from its domestic origins. The most celebrated of these pieces, the Fantasie in F minor, with its austere yet heartbreaking opening melody and dramatic double fugue, is one of the great piano achievements of the early 19th century. The rest of the works on this disc are much less well known but equally fascinating. Who better to commit these works to disc than two of the brightest stars in the British piano scene, Paul Lewis and Steven Osborne? As well as their individual achievements, they also have a long-standing friendship and performing relationship, which you will hear reflected in their magisterial performances on this marvelous disc.

Hamish Milne makes a welcome return to the Romantic Piano Concerto series with two recherché delights from the nineteenth century. Józef – ‘the other Wieniawski’ – is the brother of the more famous violinist, Henryk. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire and had a wide-ranging and successful performing and composing career. His highly attractive G minor concerto is in the mold of those by Chopin and Liszt, with the piano very much in the foreground. The finale demands a spectacular display of technique, living proof of Wieniawski’s own brand of virtuosity. Goetz’s music, although full of melodic gift and mastery of form, was rarely performed after the end of his short life. His piano concerto proved to be the most successful of his orchestral works played during his lifetime, and was praised by the local press as, “evidence of his outstanding talent, crafted, melodious, fiery and reflective, with a brilliant piano part. It is effective without playing to the gallery, often has quite new combinations of scoring in the orchestral accompaniment, and is, in the best sense of the word, modern.”

Following up on his acclaimed recording of Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet, LSO Live offers a new recording of Ravel’s ballet Daphnis et Chloé. Although he subsequently prepared orchestral suites of the score, the complete work is a magnificent orchestral showpiece in its own right. Ravel described it as a “symphonie choréographique” and it is essentially an extended tone poem. Luscious orchestral colors run throughout the work, portraying the passion of the two protagonists for each other. Great pianists on Mirare Price Code: A21 (Suggested Retail Price: $21.98)

In 1853, three great artists struck up a mutual friendship. Schumann was living out his final years of creativity before sinking into madness. Clara, his virtuoso pianist wife, had already composed more than twenty works of her own. The young Brahms left the northern mists to meet Robert, whom he venerated. The trio of composers influenced each other in many ways, and these connections are explored in Claire Désert’s recital disc for Mirare.

Many classical composers have been seduced by the sound and wide range of colors and sonorities the saxophone produces. During the years from 1815 to 1822 when his career centered on Naples, Rossini composed a sequence of works for the Teatro San Carlo, which at that time boasted an outstanding orchestra and a company of resident singers that was the leading ensemble available anywhere. A string of masterpieces resulted, including Ermione - which is without doubt one of the composer’s greatest operas, despite it being perhaps the least immediately successful. Ermione was received with incomprehension at its sole performance in 1819 and was never revived in Rossini’s lifetime. Since its first stage revival in Pesaro in 1987, Ermione has been recognized as a lost masterpiece. Set in the aftermath of the Trojan War, the opera’s novelties begin with an overture interrupted by a choral lament of Trojan prisoners. Tension and staggering originality are maintained right to the very end.

This new CD from the Real Compañía Ópera de Cámara presents two cantatas by the Spanish composer Vicente Martín y Soler - Il Sogno and La Dora festeggiante. Il Sogno, written in 1787, is the only example of collaboration of between Martín y Soler and the great librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte. These works are like a small fresco of this period of transformation. La Dora represents the end of a period, in which the Olympic gods serve as a model to human behavior, while Il Sogno, is, deep down, a pre-romantic spiritual work, in which the nymphs are no longer unattainable beings, beings that do not suffer or have human passions but on the contrary, they embody them, they live them in their own skin in spite of being in an idyllic place.

Of all Bach’s compositions, the St. Matthew Passion is undoubtedly the most ambitious one. It is also a new work, even if this newness doesn’t reside either in a purely formal invention or in the use of revolutionary musical techniques. Although the genius of the cantor of Leipzig pushes the musical processes used to their summit, it is its ingenious layout of the musical matter that is used in all the forms of that period and its roots in the history of our civilization that turn the Saint-Matthew Passion into one of civilization’s most important monuments. What strikes one in the first place in Hermann Scherchen’s interpretation, is the very judicious choice of tempi combined with a sustained characterization of each event in order to highlight the drama’s progression. He achieves this both as an architect and as a goldsmith, giving each character (individual or collective) a right weight and a measure only aimed to serve the general balance. The resulting interpretation is absolutely dramatic.

HADDAD Deux Visages

Saed Haddad views good music as needing, in addition to many intangible elements, a balance of physical and metaphysical traits. In the former category, he includes beauty, energy, magic, tension and virtuosity. In the latter category rest elusive concepts: the existential, the intellectual, the transcendental. The compositions presented on this CD belong to two periods of compositional practices. In the first period (2004-06), Haddad aimed to achieve a synthesis of Arabic and Western music, without the usual Western gimmicks, i.e. tourism, exoticism or even “abstraction.” His goal was true existential and transcendental integration, not a juxtaposition or imposition of one tradition on the other. In the latter period (2007-), the ever-questioning composer has been distancing himself from a direct, existential contact with Arabic culture.

Wergo’s focus with this new CD entitled Coronation is not on blue blood or kingly power, but in organic processes - the music on this CD sends up its shoots and produces blossoms like crowns. (co)ro(na), by Vykintas Baltakas, springs from a cascade of motivic branchings, its roots in a cycle of works named after the alchemical Ouroboros, a snake that swallows its own tail. Its dragon’s blood, so the legends say, is cinnabar red - like the hue that shines in Cinnabar by Rebecca Saunders. Magnus Lindberg’s Joy expresses itself through its profligacy with spectral harmonies and the resonant snapping of the strings of a demolished piano. Thalleïn by Iannis Xenakis creates sieves that proliferate until they transform into archaic dances, refulgent with the brass tones.

The vocalist in this instance is someone very special, none other than legendary Italian operatic tenor Mario Del Monaco. The effect of Del Monaco’s voice set against Mantovani’s lush orchestral backgrounds is truly captivating. The album Includes two previously unreleased tracks that were left off the original album. Mantovani Presents His Concert Success (1970) is slightly more typical of Mantovani’s Decca output. But even here there is a slight twist on the tried and tested format - while the individual tracks were studio-recorded, each is preceded by ‘live’ recordings of Mantovani in concert, announcing each piece to his audience, thereby creating the illusion of actually being at a Mantovani gig.

Also featured is a chorus led by arranger Bill Shepherd, and together they give charming renditions of standard tunes.
