Price Code: 2A15 (2 CDs plus 1 DualDisc, Suggested Retail Price: $31.98)

DualDisc DVD: 23 minutes In 1950, Shostakovich went to Leipzig to attend the Bicentennial Bach competition. His admiration for Tatiana Nikolaeva’s performance of the Well-Tempered Clavier ser ved as an impetus to write his own set of Twenty-Four Preludes and Fugues, loosely modeled on Bach’s. Over the years, Nikolaeva, who performed the composition frequently throughout her career, became practically synonymous with the work. Alexander Melnikov started from scratch and came up with his own, unique and eminently musical interpretation. The third disc in the set is a DualDisc with a DVD side featuring a short film by Christian Leblé about the Preludes & Fugues that includes interviews with Alexander Melnikov and Andreas Staier.

VAUGHAN WILLIAMS Kissing Her Hair Early Songs

Sarah Fox (soprano), Andrew Staples (tenor), Roderick Williams (baritone), Iain Burnside (piano) Albion • ALBCD 002

June 2010

The Sky Shall Be Our Roof comprises of nineteen arias and songs from Ralph Vaughan Williams operas. An astonishing twelve of these are world première recordings and all are deeply characteristic — in turn noble and beautiful. The disc boasts the talents of Iain Burnside, Roderick Williams, Juliette Pochin, Sarah Fox and Andrew Staples. Kissing Her Hair is a collection of early Vaughan Williams songs. One, “Rondel,” from which the title is gained, is unpublished and this is its first recording. The song is serenely beautiful and is as it was written when the composer was only 22. Available for several years in the UK, this marks the debut US release for all but one of these exceptional discs.

The choral works on Where Hope is Shining were composed from 1895 to 1954. Performed by the award winning Joyful Company of Singers and recorded in the approximate order of composition, these works show how much Vaughan Williams adapted his style over the course of his career. Music in the Heart features a rare recording of Ralph Vaughan Williams conducting his Serenade to Music from a performance in 1951, the Pilgrim’s Journey and a bonus disc of Vaughan Williams talking about the teachings of Parry and Stanford. Both the Folk Songs of the Four Seasons and In Windsor Forest are world première recordings. Folk Songs of the Four Seasons is the most significant of his works never to have been recorded in any format.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD Pergolesi’s composing career began at the age of twenty. However, at only twenty six, he died of tuberculosis. During his short lifetime, Pergolesi was revered in Rome and Naples. After his death, his reputation spread and eventually eclipsed that of most other composers in the second half of the eighteenth century. Pergolesi’s posthumous celebrity was such a magnet in the music world that, hoping to reap large financial profits, publishers and opera directors alike attributed his name to hundreds of vocal and instrumental works by lesser composers. Of all his works, the Stabat Mater was the most celebrated and remains hugely popular to this day. This recording of the Stabat Mater features Florilegium and includes a selection of Pergolesi’s choral and instrumental compositions.

The three last symphonies cover a wide range of mood and musical style, and each is a true masterwork in its own right. The seventh is among the composer’s finest works. Like Beethoven’s fifth and Mahler’s first, this symphony take us from sadness to happiness, from tragedy to jubilation. The eighth, composed at Dvorák’s summer residence deep in the Bohemian countryside, is indisputably “From the Old World.” The ninth, composed in New York and intended as a greeting “From the New World,” is steeped in the composer’s yearning for his native soil. The Suite in A major is one of the many hidden treasures among Dvorák’s works. It is a composition of enchanting beauty, lyricism and freshness.

Introducing Classic Records Best known for their reference-standard vinyl reissues, the Classic Records label also offers remasterings on CD, Digital Audio Disc (DAD), and DAD/HDAD (DVD-A compatible) DualDisc formats. An intermediate format between CD and DVD-A, DAD offers a 96kHz sampling rate (more than twice the 44.1kHz sampling rate used on standard CDs). DAD discs can be played on any standard DVD player, including those on personal computers, but they will not play in a regular CD player. The Classic Records ‘HDAD’ format offers DVD-A compatible recordings at 192kHz. The audio quality of DVD-A is similar to that of SACD, but as these discs are not ‘hybrid,’ they will not play on standard CD or DVD players. To play these extended dynamic range discs, a DVD-A player is required. The repertoire on Classic Records includes audiophile favorites taken from the Everest, Laurel, Vanguard and Vox catalogs.

Price Code: 3A19 (3 CD Set, Suggested Retail Price: $59.98) This important historical release contains a mouthwatering selection of classic English symphonic repertoire, with many recordings receiving their CD debuts. These 1956 Nixa — Westminster recordings have been remastered at Abbey Road studios from original tapes held in the EMI and Universal archives. The sound quality is quite astonishing, especially considering they were made over fifty years ago. Sir Adrian Boult is featured, conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra in his signature repertoire on recordings that are already considered to be classics. Boult’s interpretation of Elgar’s Symphony No. 2, for example, is arguably second to none, as is his powerful performance of Walton’s first symphony. Boult rarely recorded Britten, so it is of significance that this set includes his complete recordings of the composer’s works (Boult’s own narration of the Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra is beautifully enunciated). Also included are the two rarely-recorded Britten orchestrations of music by Rossini, joyfully performed and providing light, foot-tapping contrast.

Cinquecento sings Renaissance rarities hyperion

WILLAERT Missa Mente Tota, Motets Cinquecento Hyperion • CDA 67749

Aa34571c!& $([Q Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

The all-male vocal ensemble Cinquecento have won great praise for their recordings of Renaissance rarities. Their tone, vocal flexibility, collective and individual musicianship and commitment to their chosen repertoire places them at the very forefront of modern-day specialists in this music. Their latest disc features the music of Adrian Willaert, a contemporary of Josquin and for many years chapel master of the Venetian basilica di San Marco. Two extraordinary early works, Missa Mente tota and Quid non ebrietas, testify to the composer’s remarkable talent and love for complex contrapuntal constructions. BRITTEN Songs & Proverbs of William Blake

Gerald Finley (baritone), Julius Drake (piano) Hyperion • CDA 67778

Aa34571c!& &*[Q Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

The unbeatable, multiaward-winning partnership of Gerald Finley and Julius Drake turns to the composer Benjamin Britten for their latest Hyperion release. Although Britten is particularly celebrated for the substantial body of music he composed for the tenor voice, the composer also left an important legacy of music for baritone. In addition to song-cycles, individual songs and folksong arrangements, Britten also included challenging baritone roles in his operas. This disc contains Britten’s two important song cycles for baritone — Tit for Tat, setting the poems of Walter de la Mare, and the more substantial Songs and Proverbs of William Blake. The latter was written for Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau; designed to showcase his unique blend of intense lyricism and dramatic characterization, qualities which are undoubtedly also exhibited by Gerald Finley. Also included are some of Britten’s popular folksong settings, and a selection of later songs, which received exposure and publication only after the composer’s death.

BRIGGS Mass for Notre Dame

Aa34571c!&*)*?K Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

Organist and composer David Briggs studied with Jean Langlais in Paris and was profoundly influenced by the playing of Pierre Cochereau, Organist Titulaire at Notre Dame Cathedral. Briggs was the first British winner of the Tournemire Prize at the St Alban’s International Organ Improvisation Competition. He is Organist Emeritus of Gloucester Cathedral, where he was music director for eight years. This disc features Briggs’ Messe Pour Notre Dame, and includes four movements of David Briggs’ organ improvisations. Very much aligned with French liturgical practice, this is Briggs captured in the heat of the improvised, unedited moment playing improvisations that display a masterful range of mood and color. Also included are some of Briggs’ Anglophone choral anthems. The Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge, who have been winning increasing praise for their Hyperion recordings, perform here led by their inspirational director Stephen Layton, with the composer, of course, at the organ.

Graham Johnson’s complete Schubert and Schumann songs series for Hyperion are landmarks in the history of recorded music. Now this indefatigable performer and scholar turns to the songs and vocal works of Brahms. Each disc of this series will take a journey through Brahms’ life and career. The songs are not quite presented in chronological order, but they do appear here in the order that the songs were presented to the world. In a number of these Hyperion recitals, an opus number will be presented in its entirety (in the case of this disc, Op. 48). The folksongs of 1894 will be shared between all the singers in the series. The celebrated mezzo-soprano Angelika Kirchschlager is featured in the debut release in the series. She enjoys an international career as one of today’s most important singers, dividing her time between recitals and opera in Europe, North America and the Far East.

The talented young British cellist Natalie Clein has become a familiar name since winning the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition in 1994. Since then, she has pursued a distinguished career performing with the most celebrated orchestras and conductors around the world. For her Hyperion debut, Clein turns to a composer who is close to her heart, the great Hungarian national composer Zoltán Kodály. Kodály made a decision to concentrate on instrumental and chamber music in his composing career, and he seemed to achieve more powerful results the fewer instruments he dealt with. He displayed elegant formal grasp and structural sophistication in his two string quartets and sheer passion and epic sweep in the Duo for violin and cello. But above all towers the amazing, ardent, pugnacious Sonata for solo cello, the greatest utterance in this most demanding of genres since J.S. Bach. Natalie Clein’s performance of this highly emotional monologue is a passionate, coruscating tour-de-force. Also included are a delightful selection of Kodály’s other works for cello, performed here with Hyperion regular and Natalie’s frequent duo partner, Julius Drake.

C.P.E. BACH Keyboard Sonatas

Danny Driver (piano) Hyperion • CDA 67786

Aa34571c!& *^VL Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

The pianist Danny Driver has garnered the highest possible praise for his two York Bowen discs on Hyperion. Now, d e m o n s t r a t i n g h i s extraordinary versatility, he turns to a composer from a very different age — yet one who has been similarly overlooked by the musical establishment. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, second son of Johann Sebastian, was both revered and criticized by his contemporaries for his bold departures from conventional modes of musical expression. He perfected a highly original and intensely personal compositional style known as the empfindsamer Stil (literally, the ‘sensitive style’). C.P.E. Bach’s dramatic music clearly breaks away from, yet also builds upon, the early eighteenth-century style perfected by his father. His compositions mark one of the first — and among the most inspired — repudiations of the baroque aesthetic, in which a single unified mood dominates each movement. C.P.E. Bach composed more than three hundred keyboard works during his lifetime. All of the works on this recording were composed during the 1740s, while he was in the service of King Frederick II of Prussia.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD To date, each release from the Mariinsky label has featured music by some of the great Russian composers of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, each has whom has had strong connections with St. Petersburg. For the label’s sixth release, Valery Gergiev turns to the music of Igor Stravinsky, a composer who grew up in the city, attending performances at the Mariinsky Theatre where his father sang. Although less than four years separate the premieres of Les Noces and Oedipus Rex, they are two of the greatest works of two distinct phases in Stravinsky’s career. Stravinsky dedicated Les Noces to Diaghilev (whose Ballet Russes gave the premiere) and it marks the crowning glory of Stravinsky’s so-called ‘second Russian period.’ The opera-oratorio Oedipus Rex is the first great work of Stravinsky’s neoclassical period. It is sung here in Latin with Jean Cocteau’s original French narration spoken by the wellknown actor Gérard Depardieu.

This release completes the Nash Ensemble’s survey of the Brahms piano quartets. The group’s recording of the first and third quartets garnered broad critical acclaim. By the time Brahms wrote his Clarinet Trio in 1891, he was a very well-known composer and musician. The trio, as well as the later clarinet quintet and solo sonatas, was written for and inspired by the great clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld, much in the way Mozart wrote for Anton Stadler. Brahms’s second Piano Quartet is massive in scale. It is one of the true masterpieces of the period, rich in melodic content and complex thematic development.

It is coupled with Stravinsky’s wonderfully concise Concertino of 1920 and Myaskovsky’s epic 13th quartet. The Borodin Quartet has been at the very center of the chamber music world for over 60 years, and has seen several changes in personnel during this period. This recording marks the debut of the group’s new cellist Vladimir Balshin who replaces Valentin Berlinsky.

Their music gives a special poetic voice to the plight of the Palestinian people. The trio has been recording since 1995, and these two releases are reissues of the group’s first two albums. Randana is a product of the three Joubran brothers melding their respective strengths: Samir’s compositions; Wissam’s hand-made instruments and skills in taqasim, or improvisation; and youngest brother Adnan’s prodigious raw talent. It was originally released on the artists’ own label of the same name — Palestine’s first recording label.
