VIVALDI Four Seasons REBEL Les Éléments

Midori Seiler (violin), Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin harmonia mundi • HMC 902061

Hk948 1c($@&@ZP Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

This new disc follows on from the stage production in which the orchestra joined forces with a dancer (available on DVD – HMD 9909026). Encouraged by the outstanding success of these performances, violinist Midori Seiler and the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin were keen to re-record the works in the studio. Although free from all choreographic intentions, their interpretation was still profoundly influenced by the experience. This is the first time the group has recorded Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, and a rare appearance for the evergreen work on the harmonia mundi label.

With this new CD, fortepiano phenomenon Kristian Bezuidenhout begins a multi-volume traversal of Mozart’s music f o r s o l o k e y b o a rd f o r harmonia mundi. Volume one features an instrument by Derek Adlam modeled on an original by Gabriel Anton Walter of the type Mozart owned in Vienna. Works on the CD include two sonatas, K533 and K570, the Fantasia K475 and the Variations on ‘Unser dummer Pöbel meint’ K455. Kristian Bezuidenhout studied with Rebecca Penneys, Malcolm Bilson and Paul O’Dette. He first gained international recognition at the age of 21 after winning the prestigious first prize as well as the audience prize in the Bruges Fortepiano Competition (2001), a double honor, this being only the third time the former prize has been awarded in the history of the competition. Bezuidenhout is a frequent guest artist with the world’s leading ensembles and he now has a standing duo with the baroque violinist Petra Müllejans, artistic director of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra. Their first CD, a disc of Mozart Violin Sonatas, was released on harmonia mundi in the Spring of 2009.

BACH Goldberg Variations

Includes free bonus ‘making-of’ DVD Andreas Staier waited nearly a quarter of a century before playing the Goldberg Variations in public. His long-awaited first performance was in Montreal at the end of April 2000, and this new set for harmonia mundi is his first recording of Bach’s keyboard masterpiece. Undoubtedly one of the most prominent harpsichord and fortepiano performers in the world, Staier embarked upon a solo career in 1986 after leaving the acclaimed ensemble Musica Antiqua Köln. Since then, his indisputable musical mastery as a soloist has made its mark on the interpretation of baroque, classical and romantic repertoire. His extensive discography has garnered top critical awards from the international press. Staier says of the Goldbergs, “Bach used the possibilities offered by the instrument’s double keyboard. The work is totally suited to the harpsichord, whereas trying to play it on the piano is like attempting to square the circle.”

“Staier’s playing is a miracle of grace, calm and refinement. His gift of ornamentation and his skill with subtle rubato make for Bach playing of the highest calibre.” — INTERNATIONAL RECORD REVIEW

WECKMANN Wie liegt die Stadt so wüßte — Sacred Motets Cantus Cölln, Konrad Junghänel harmonia mundi • HMC 902034

Hk948 1c($ !@ZP Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

To his contemporaries, the death of Matthias Weckmann in 1674 seemed to herald the end of a glorious period. In his post as organist of the Jacobikirche since 1655, the composer had breathed new life into the city’s musical scene. Among his finest sacred works is Wie liegt die Stadt so wüßte (How doth the city sit solitary) — a setting of book one of the Lamentations of Jeremiah, which speaks of the isolation of the city of Jerusalem. This haunting work is both pristinely evocative and immaculately structured, a credit to the teaching of Weckmann’s teacher, Heinrich Schütz, and the German musical tradition preceding JS Bach. Konrad Junghänel leads Cantus Cölln in a moving performance of this rarely heard masterwork, coupled here with other sacred motets.

Krenek was born in Vienna as the son of a Czech soldier in the Austro-Hungarian army. He studied in Berlin with Franz Schreker before working as a conductor in various German opera houses. In the mid 30’s, his writings were banned and his music was targeted by the Nazis. His jazz variations on Jonny spielt auf were included in the 1938 Degenerate art exhibition in Munich. The Forgo en Kingdom (Le Royaume Oublié) The Cathar Tragedy • The Albigensian Crusade

H6q9o8yc#(*&#)s

Price Code: 3A24 (3 SACD Set, Suggested Retail Price: $74.98) SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD Catharism was the name given to a Christian religious sect that appeared in the Languedoc region of what is now southern France and flourished in the 12th and 13th centuries. The Cathars saw matter as intrinsically evil. They denied that Jesus could become incarnate and still be the son of God and thus, the Catholic Church regarded the sect as dangerously heretical. Faced with what they saw as a rapidly spreading cancer, the Church called for a crusade, which was carried out by knights from Northern France and Germany and was known as the Albigensian Crusade. This campaign, and the inquisition that followed it, eradicated the Cathars completely. It also had the effect of weakening the semiindependent southern principalities in the area, ultimately bringing them under direct control of the King of France. Occitania, once a crossroads of many cultures, was one of the victims of the Albigensian Crusade. Occitania’s refined culture culminated in the troubadour tradition, which subsequently spread to Italy, Spain and Greece. Related movements sprang up throughout Europe: the Minnesingers in Germany, trovadorismo in Galicia and Portugal and the trouvères in northern France. On this album, Jordi Savall not only explores the ‘classical’ period of the troubadour school from around the turn of the 13th century, but also provides us with a comprehensive historical and artistic background of this Golden Age. It is time we remembered this ‘forgotten’ kingdom where much of what we call Western culture was incubated.

Looking at Brahms in a new way channel classics

BRAHMS (arranged by LAZIC) Piano Concerto No.3 in D Major (a er the Violin Concerto Op. 77); Rhapsodies Op.79, Scherzo Op.4 Dejan Lazic (piano), Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Robert Spano Channel Classics • CCS SA 29410

Hk23 85c@($!)]T Price Code: A24 (Suggested Retail Price: $24.98)

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD Channel Classics presents the world premiere recording of Dejan Lazic’s arrangement for piano and orchestra of Johannes Brahms’ beloved violin concerto. Recorded live with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra led by Robert Spano, the work’s creation was driven by two major inspirations. One was keyboard arrangements of violin concertos by Bach and Beethoven that were penned by the composers and the other was Brahms’ own countless arrangements and transcriptions of his and other composers’ works. Although Lazic completely re-wrote and re-thought the solo part, penning it in a clearly recognizable Brahmsian style and adding his own cadenza, the orchestral score remains entirely unchanged. Ultimately, Lazic’s goal was to translate Brahms’s unique musical language into a new setting without losing any of its original musical value and, in addition, to give pianists an equal chance to perform and enjoy this wonderful music. After hearing it, you will agree that there is a strong possibility that his goal will come to fruition.

VICTORIA Lamentations of Jeremiah

Tallis Scholars, Peter Phillips Gimell • CDGIM 043

Hk5 138c!)$#@\R Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

Considered by many scholars to be the greatest of all Spanish composers, Tomas Luis de Victoria was born in 1549. He studied for the priesthood in Rome with the Jesuits and one of his music teachers may have been the great Palestrina. He was ordained and served in various music and clerical positions under papal auspices in Italy before returning to his native Spain in the late 1500s. Written to be sung during Holy Week, Victoria’s nine Lamentations of Jeremiah contain some of his most intense, mystical and moving music and rank alongside the Requiem as one of his greatest achievements. They would not have been sung as a set, but rather divided as appropriate among several services. This new recording celebrates several important milestones. Not only is it a rare collection of the complete Lamentations, it also marks the 30th anniversary of the first Gimell recording sessions in March 1980 and is the Tallis Scholars’ fiftieth CD.

BACH/D’ALBERT Piano Transcriptions — Vol.8 Piers Lane (piano) Hyperion • CDA 67709

Aa34571c!& )(?K Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

Hyperion’s Bach piano transcriptions series reaches volume eight and continues to surprise and delight with this disc featuring Australian pianist Piers Lane that contains many first recordings. A controversial figure at the time, Eugen d’Albert was one of the greatest pianists of his day and, although largely forgotten now, a composer of genuinely international renown. A sometime student at the Royal College of Music, d’Albert rejected his British upbringing and nailed his colors to the mast of German music. Bach was an important part of his performing career — and like other great nineteenth-century pianists, d’Albert saw in the monumental scale of the organ works an opportunity to synthesize the works of the master with the expanded capabilities of the modern piano.

Aa34571c!& % \R Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

The mercurial partnership of Angela Hewitt and Daniel MüllerSchott brought overwhelming intensity and emotional gravitas to their first disc of Beethoven’s cello sonatas. Here in this second volume they present two more of these groundbreaking masterpieces, together with the composer’s homages to Mozart and Handel — works that are equally important components of the cello repertoire. Hewitt’s characteristic digital dexterity and deep understanding of the classical style and Müller-Schott’s vibrant playing combine to create performances of great energy and sensitivity. Works on the disc include the two sonatas of opus 102 and three sets of variations — the Variations in G major on ‘See the conqu’ring hero comes’ from Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus WoO45, the Variations in F major on ‘Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen’ from Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte Op. 66 and the Variations in E flat major on ‘Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen’ from Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte WoO46.

Susanne Heinrich (viola da gamba) Hyperion • CDA 67811

Aa34571c!&*! ?K Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

Susanne Heinrich’s first solo release for Hyperion was a deliciously atmospheric award-winning disc of music by Abel. She continues her exploration of the world of the viol with this fascinating selection of works by the English composer Tobias Hume. Hume is a paradoxical figure: sometime mercenary solider and popularly described as a dilettante, the suggestive titles of some of these pieces reinforce that picture-a picture that is belied by the music itself. Many of these works show a deep understanding of pure, translucent emotion, as if to take a magnifying glass straight to the core of one’s feelings. A sense of melancholy and sadness, enhanced by Heinrich’s sympathetic playing, entices the listener into a world of dark enchantment.

Aa34571c!& *%YO Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

The celebrated Choir of Westminster Cathedral gets back to its roots with this recording of some of the towering masterpieces of Renaissance polyphony. Palestrina’s Missa Te Deum laudamus is a paraphrase Mass. Like the chant on which it is based, is in the Phrygian mode, which in modern terms can be regarded as a modal form of E minor. Haberl, a late nineteenth-century editor of the complete works of Palestrina, commented that, “this gives the Mass a certain severity of coloring, but [it is] full of holy fire.” The Missa Tu es Petrus is a parody Mass based closely on Palestrina’s own motet for the Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul (published in Rome in his second book of motets in 1572), from which a great deal of the musical material of the Mass is drawn. The motet, which precedes the Mass on this disc, is one of the most gloriously sunlit and uplifting pieces in all of Palestrina’s music, and its joyous splendor sets the tone for the Mass.

Goldner String Quartet, Piers Lane (piano) Hyperion • CDA 67805

Aa34571c!&*)%+U Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

The performing team of fellow Australians Piers Lane and the Goldner String Quartet has won many plaudits for their enlightening interpretations of the more obscure piano quintet repertoire. Now they turn to a composer who triumphed in the genre. Dvorák’s first quintet was born during a period of poverty and uncertainty, the second when the composer was approaching the zenith of his international fame. The two works make a fascinating pairing here. Dvorák originally tore up his manuscript of the first — luckily the pianist at the premiere kept a copy. It is clearly a youthful work, but there is no doubting the confidence with which Dvorák handles the combination of piano and strings (doubly impressive since he did not possess a piano at this time). Dvorák’s second quintet was an immediate popular success at its first performance and has remained one of the best-loved examples of the genre. The celebrated ‘Dumka’ movement, the lyrical heart of the work, demonstrates the extraordinary command of melody that characterizes the composer’s symphonies.

Il2 231c!^ @ VL Price Code: A17 (Suggested Retail Price: $17.98)

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD Following recordings of Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle and Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet, LSO Live returns to Valery Gergiev’s acclaimed Mahler cycle with the release of the fourth symphony. Using a reduced orchestra, unusually without any lower brass, Mahler’s Symphony No.4 was influenced by the trend to revive the classical style of Haydn and Mozart, as a reaction against the monumental ‘Wagnerian’ romanticism of its predecessors. The work is based around the final movement, written some years earlier — its childish and naïve text giving shape to the other movements.

Concert review

“Those who think of Mahler’s Fourth as the gentlest of his symphonies would have found their ideas challenged by Valery Gergiev’s probing interpretation of it. Far from being a sunny, carefree idyll, this was something more prone to anxiety and tension than to tranquil nostalgia. It was perhaps this tussle between serenity and apprehension that made the performance so fascinating and the music so disquieting... the overall impression was of a Mahler Fourth that was freshly conceived and deeply compelling.” — DAILY TELEGRAPH

RESPIGHI Belkis, Queen of Sheba HINDEMITH Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes by Carl Maria von Weber SCHMITT The Tragedy of Salome

Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra, Sascha Goetzel Onyx Classics • ONYX 4048

March 2010

Onyx Classics presents the debut recording by the remarkable Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra and their young Austrian music director Sascha Goetzel. with a disc of works that all have links with either Turkey or the Orient. Respighi’s ballet Belkis, Queen of Sheba features a frenzied war dance, complete with Arab percussion. Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes by Carl Maria von Weber uses themes that Weber had composed for his incidental music to a play on the subject of Turandot, the Persian princess. Florent Schmitt’s opulent late romantic ballet The Tragedy of Salome was lavishly praised by Stravinsky, who said, “God, how fine it is! It is one of the greatest masterpieces of modern music.”

“Rogé’s ear for sonority and broad palette of colours are especially impressive… the clarity and intelligence he brings to his playing is hugely persuasive.” — MUSICAL CRITICISM Wedding Cake is a delightful disc of French music for two pianos and piano four hands from Onyx artist Pascal Rogé and his wife Ami Rogé. The music is a mix of the urbane, witty, tender, passionate and dramatic — from Saint-Saëns’ sparkling Wedding Cake Caprice, to the passion and eroticism of Ravel’s La Valse, to the drama of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice by Dukas and the gentle and sophisticated romanticism of Faure’s Dolly Suite. Also featured on the CD is Paul Chihara’s Ami Suite, which was written for Pascal and Ami and receives its world premiere recording here.

OFFENBACH Vert-Vert

Hk92938c) $!@+U Price Code: 2A25 (2 CD Set, Suggested Retail Price: $51.98)

The word inexhaustible might have been coined to describe the prolific creativity of Jacques Offenbach, who effectively created the new genre of operetta in Paris in the mid-19th century. Opera Rara’s association with his music goes back a long way, to the company’s revival of his 1867 opéra-comique Robinson Crusoe (ORC7), and the creation of a new piece, Christopher Columbus (ORC2), with a libretto by Don White, drawing on a host of the master’s scores. In 2007 we resumed our exploration of the huge output of the ‘Mozart of the Champs-Élysées’ with Entre Nous (ORR243), a collection of excerpts from more than twenty of his lesser-known scores. Opera Rara’s new release presents a complete recording of the delectable Vert-Vert. Toby Spence takes the role of the charming young man who is nicknamed Vert-Vert after the deceased favorite parrot of the pupils at a girls boarding school. Jennifer Larmore is the exotic singer La Corilla in this witty, sophisticated and subtle piece. It is sure to enchant all Offenbach fans.

Schubert’s charming piano duets SCHUBERT Works for Piano Duet Prague Piano Duo Praga • PRD 250263

Hk948 1c(!^)@XN Price Code: A22 (Suggested Retail Price: $22.98)

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD Between April 1813 and June 1828, Schubert wrote over thirty piano scores requiring a partner or pupil. For him, piano four hands was always a place of exchange and dialogue, a symbol of fraternal communion within the same affective universe. In addition to dances, marches, Ländler, divertimenti, variations and varied themes, Schubert left a modest, highly moving testament in the Fantasy in F minor, a masterpiece of the genre. Here it is coupled with a few examples of works written for a new piano, created by Erard, which featured a double escapement action, permitting a note to be repeated even if the key had not yet risen to its maximum vertical position. This facilitated rapid playing of repeated notes, a musical device that was favored by Liszt.

HAYDN Symphonies

2009 marked the two-hundredth anniversary of Haydn’s death. Among the greatest interpreters of this composer is certainly Hermann Scherchen who recorded twenty-one of his symphonies, including all the London symphonies, mainly for the American label Westminster. Several of these recordings have become famous. In his version of the 88th, Scherchen adopts a very slow tempo, so slow that it takes him four minutes more than Furtwängler who didn’t count among the rapid conductors. Another sensation at the time was his recording of the Farewell Symphony in which, in the last movement, the musicians leave the stage one after the other, saying out aloud, “Auf Wiedersehen” while the sound of the orchestra also becomes progressively softer.

A child prodigy, Ginette Neveu took lessons from her mother and made her solo debut at the age of seven with the Colonne Orchestra in Paris. She studied with George Enescu, Nadia Boulanger and Carl Flesch. At age fifteen, Neveu achieved worldwide celebrity status when she won the Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition over 180 contestants, including the future virtuoso David Oistrakh, who finished second. Today Neveu is recognized as one of the world’s great violinists, despite a career that ended tragically at a very young age. Selections on this tribute disc include excerpts from the Beethoven, Brahms and Sibelius concertos and a complete performance of the Chausson Poème.

“Listening to this outstanding compilation made me wonder why ageing singer Bonga isn’t more celebrated in English-speaking world music circles… Bonga’s ability to switch from emotive ballads to punchy shuffles is brilliantly evident in this collection. He has a delightfully raspy voice: full of fire and passion, and musically confident.” — SONGLINES

File in: Jazz Novelty Fox is an all-star jazz/pop combo led by virtuoso percussionist Jean-Michel Davis. Their album Forgotten Dreams recreates a selection of light music favorites. Works such as the great Leroy Anderson’s “Belle of the Ball” and “Sleigh Ride” elicit the sense of Americana that was so dear to the composer. “Joyeux Canari” and “Bohemian Dream” evoke the alluring atmosphere of Parisian folk dances, enhanced here by seductive and colorful instrumentation. Forgotten Dreams bridges jazz and classical styles, reintroducing its audience to light and entertaining music that remains, nonetheless, worldly and sophisticated.

File in: Jazz Latcho drom (meaning “have a good journey” in the gipsy language) was formed in the French town of Toulouse in 1993 by the guitarist Christophe Lartilleaux, in order to revive the music of the famous Django Reinhardt and his Hot Club de France Quintet. Lartilleux, along with his young talented colleagues and impassioned by Django’ music, restored the sound and swing of the time. The legacy of Latcho Drom stands as an important landmark in the history of the style immortalized by Django Reinhardt. Lartilleaux has always maintained the need to modernize Gypsy swing, blending in today’s music in general and American jazz in particular. A veritable ambassador of Tsigania, on a par with Bireli Lagrène and Raphaël Fays, he has worked with the best musicians and taken pride of place in the French musical landscape. This boxed set features the first three albums made by Latcho Drom from 1994 to 1997.
