SPOTLIGHT

To help you get to know us a little better, each week we focus on one member of our international student family, a Lane faculty or staff member, or a Lane department or program.

International Programs

Middle row: Alicia, Jennifer, Beth Front row: Shi Nae, Dao

Lane International Programs only exists because you do! The department consists of nine dedicated staff members who help international students from the time they apply to Lane until the time they graduate. All international students meet us at orientation, but we are also here to help you after that with housing & homestay, cultural adjustment, academic and immigration advising, and referrals to other Lane departments and staff who can help you along every step of the way. We are happy to serve international students and look forward to seeing you in our office in Building 11, Room 235!

BE A STAR

weekly expression

TGIF Acronym for "Thank God it's Friday". Used to express the joy you feel in knowing that the work/school week has officially ended and that you have two days off to enjoy!

If you would like to be featured in LIT, please send an email to harej@lanecc.edu with your most glamorous picture and the following information: name, country, age, major, favorite food, hobbies & interests, dream vacation, what you miss most from your home country or your biggest culture shock, what you like the best about the U.S., Oregon, Eugene or Lane. Please send your submission by Wednesday for publication the following week or in future editions.

Lane Policies & Deadlines Dropped your class? If you don’t attend the first day of class, Lane instructors have the right to give your spot to another student who wants it. If you decide not to attend a class, be sure to log in to MyLane and drop the class so that you won’t be billed for it. Don’t assume that your instructor has officially dropped you even if you don’t come to class! Late registration Once the term has begun, you cannot register for classes online through MyLane without the instructor’s approval. Instead, you must attend the class and ask the instructor for permission to add it. This is called “crashing” a class – attending the first day and hoping to be given a spot in the class when another student doesn’t show up. If the instructor has room for you, they will fill out an add form and give you instructions on how to add the class. In order to add the class once you’ve been given instructor permission, you will need to register for it yourself in MyLane. Deadline to drop classes The drop deadline for courses with a 100% refund is 11:59 pm on Sunday of Week 1. You can see the drop deadline for classes by visiting: http://www2.lanecc.edu/esfs/refund-drop-schedule-change-deadline-information

Summer Stories How can summer be over??? It seemed like it would last forever and then you blinked and it was gone. Chances are, though, you were able to fill it with some exciting adventures. If you traveled anywhere or had a unique summer experience you’d like to share, please email it to harej@lanecc.edu along with a picture if you have one so we can feature it in the next LIT publication.

Immigration Updates Full-time status To maintain your F-1 student visa status, you must be registered full-time for 12 credits. If you have any questions about this, please see your international student advisor as soon as possible. Remember, no more than one class online can count toward this 12 credit minimum. For IESL students, full-time status means you must be enrolled in 18 class hours per week. What’s up with my health insurance? Beginning Monday, Sept. 24, 2012, your international student insurance plan will change from Lewer Health Insurance to Firebird International Insurance Group. Please follow this link to find doctors, claim information and much more: http://fiig-insurance.com You will receive new insurance cards in the mail. Please watch for these or stop by the office in Building 11, Room 235. Please see Colby Sheldon before Friday, September 28th if you have a private insurance policy and wish to prove that it is equal to Firebird's requirements. If you intend to purchase additional coverage for your dependents in the U.S., you must do so before September 28th as well. If you have any questions about insurance or need help, please see Colby or email her at sheldonc@lanecc.edu. Have you moved recently? Remember, if you move you are required by immigration to update your change of address in MyLane within 10 days of the change. The International Programs office will then update your SEVIS record with your new address.
