the history The estate’s rich history dates back to 1086 when it was a royal manor in the reign of Edward the Confessor. Later, the manor was given by William the Conqueror to the nuns of St Mary’s Abbey. The current house, with elegant Jacobean features, was built in 1620 on the site of a former monastery. Imagine striking photographs of the bride and groom against the backdrop of the beautiful manor house, both inside and out in the grounds.

saying i do From the stunning Grand Ballroom, to the dramatic Great Hall or smaller, more intimate Drawing Room, Froyle Park boasts many options to say “I do”. The Great Hall’s grand staircase and large ornate fireplace reflect the timeless romance of the venue’s Jacobean architecture. For the more traditional, couples may be able to exchange vows at the altar in the beautiful St Mary’s village church, easily accessed from the manor’s grounds.

the grounds Through the gates and up the stately, tree-lined path, Froyle Park is set in the heart of picturesque Hampshire countryside. Finding the wedding dress of your dreams is an exciting, yet daunting task. It’s the most important dress you’ll ever wear and has to make you look and feel beautiful. Even if you’re normally decisive, choosing a bridal gown can leave you confused by what flatters you best. There’s so much to consider: the fabric, silhouette, neckline, length, embellishments and how easily you can move on the dance-floor! If you’re not sure where to start, a good idea to begin with is opening your mind to trying on silhouettes and styles you wouldn’t normally consider. If you’ve always imagined you’d wear a full-skirted gown, don’t rule out trying on a more tailored, fitted style - you might be pleasantly surprised. 20

Remember to wear wedding-worthy underwear and to bring your wedding shoes, so that you can see exactly how the dress fits. Think about the time of year you plan to get married and imagine yourself wearing the gown throughout the day.

Ask someone to come with you, perhaps your mum, relative or a trusted friend, but avoid bringing a crowd; too many opinions can be unhelpful. When you’re trying on gowns, don’t be rushed into making a decision and most importantly, relax and enjoy yourself. When you find ‘The One’ you’ll know - and with these stunning dresses from Amaryllis Bridalwear, it might just be love at first sight.

the look of love

the look of love Picture-perfect hair and make-up for your special day...

skincare For flawless skin, before you even reach for the make-up, think about what you’re eating and drinking. Taking the simple step of drinking more water in the run up to your wedding day, is the key to clear skin. Cutting back on refined sugar, alcohol and stimulants such as coffee, and eating a healthy diet full of fresh fruit and vegetables, will ensure your skin glows and your eyes sparkle on your big day.

artists. ‘Moisturising properly is important too, including the eye area and I would recommend investing in a good serum.’

‘As well as drinking plenty of water, it’s a good idea to exfoliate at least twice a week, particularly through the winter months,’ says Antonia Krieger, Proprietor of Elle Au Naturel – professional hair and make-up

‘Also think about getting your brows into a good shape,’ says Antonia. ‘They need to be freshly waxed or threaded so the eye-shadow sits on the skin rather than hair.’

If you like the idea of having a facial in the run up to your wedding, find a good therapist who does hydrating (depending on skin type) facials, but make sure these are done well in advance, as some can cause breakouts.

29

weddings in the south magazine // surrey & hampshire

make-up To accentuate eyes, define with liner, smudged is fine, but it doesn’t always have to be strong. Use eye shadow, even if it’s really light, to put some socket shape in, then highlight the brow bone and lid as that will brighten the eye and make them stand out in the pictures.

A common misconception about bridal make-up is that you must wear more of everything. But, if your make-up artist is skilled and has good products to hand, you don’t necessarily need to apply any more make-up than usual. ‘I would never tell a client that they need heavier make-up for a wedding,’ says Antonia. ‘Some clients need very little foundation as their skin doesn’t require it and others do need more. It’s all about the individual.’ With bridal make-up, it’s more about definition. Defining the eyes and brows is paramount for the best possible photographs, as this is all you will see in a black and white picture, but again this doesn’t mean you need to be heavy-handed. ‘The right colours on an eye should make them light and bright and pop out in a photo,’ says Antonia. Blusher can be tricky, as, if you only want to wear a hint of blusher, you can sometimes look a little washed out in the photographs. The best thing to do is to ask your make-up artist to look at the style of photography you’ve chosen, particularly at the photographer’s use of light, and then advise you on how much blusher – and lip colour – to wear.

30

Because you’ll be celebrating well into the night, it’s important to have make-up that will last. You don’t want it to disappear after an hour, or to have to keep re-applying. Often make up will last better if it is well applied by a professional make-up artist, who has quality products and tricks up their sleeve. ‘Personally I make sure I use a good moisturiser that works well under make-up,’ says Antonia. ‘Then a primer and also an eye primer as well, to hold the eye shadow and stop any creasing, and finally I help advise on what touch up products they should purchase for the day.’ For Indian weddings, make sure your make-up is distinct for each part of the celebrations. Contrast a natural look and pastel shades at a civil ceremony with bright colours at your Sangeet and Garba nights. This will ensure that the chronology of your wedding is clear in photos and you’ll get to show off three gorgeous looks!

the look of love

hair Whilst making sure your skin is looking great, keep your hair in top condition too by getting it trimmed every 6 - 8 weeks. Try using a deep conditioner at home, once a week, for ultimately soft and nourished locks. As you flick through magazines considering your bridal hair, think about the neckline of your dress, what the weather will be like and how your hairstyle will look in the photographs. A current trend for hair is for styles to be a lot less formal; knotted chignons, braids and twists, where the hair is softly pinned up and not too structured. This can look beautiful, but be mindful of the photos.

and rain, then it might be advisable to consider an up do. The same applies to a humid day – long hair in curls will often drop and look untidy. Whether you covet dimante glitter or pretty petals, why not add a little extra something to your hairdo? A tiara or tikka will make you feel like a princess while fresh flowers are naturally beautiful. Ask your florist to create bespoke, fresh hair corsages that match your bouquets for you and your best girls, but make sure you discuss which flowers sit best in the hair and which will last longest without water.

‘If the shot is back lit and there are stray hairs that haven’t been sprayed, it can look messy,’ explains Antonia. ‘ Up do’s do tend to hold better as they can be sprayed well, but if the bride is relaxed and having a relaxed wedding, down hairstyles are lovely.’ If you wish to curl your hair and wear it down, invest in a good heated roller set, with tonging or the use of a hot rod over the top, to help the curl hold better into the evening. If your wedding is in the winter months when there is likely to be wind

31

weddings in the south magazine // surrey & hampshire

book a trial It’s really important to book a trial hair and make-up appointment, so that you’re not stressed on the day. Take along your veil, tiara and any other accessories you intend to wear, so that you can perfect your look. Communication is key. Talk to your hair and make-up artist about your ideas, bringing with you a scrapbook of pictures you like, to help the professionals fulfill your dreams. ‘Try and choose imagery of people who have similar colouring to yourself, especially when it comes to make up,’ advises Antonia. ‘But be aware that a lot of make up pictures are heavily touched up. Brides are real women and are supposed to look real, not like airbrushed models.’

32

Indian brides should make sure they take along their dupatta and tikka to their consultation. The shape of your face, hairline and colouring will affect the overall look, as well as the make-up palette you choose. Also you will get a feel for how comfortable your outfit is. Many brides are surprised at how heavy their gorgeous dupattas can be and you will be able to make amendments if you find you’re getting a stiff neck. A good idea is to have your hair and make-up trial before you have your pre-wedding shoot with your photographer - that way you can see what your hair and make-up looks like in your professional photos.

beautiful blooms

beautiful blooms Fresh and fragrant, symbolic of youth, beauty and happiness, dress your day with fantastic flowers that accentuate your theme and colours... Whether you’re planning a dreamy and romantic wedding or a bright, bold celebration, the flowers you choose help set the tone for your big day. So, before visiting the florist, it’s a good idea to think about the atmosphere you wish to create. Perhaps pick up a couple of wedding flowers magazines, use Pinterest to put together a mood-board of flowers that catch your eye, or note down the names of flowers that you love and that match your colour scheme or theme. To start you off on your floral journey, we offer some floral inspiration and talk to the experts for their top tips. Colour is all-important for creating and setting the mood. Blue is a very popular choice for wedding colour schemes, conveying calm waters and clear skies. Soft, blue hydrangea, dainty nigella and cornflowers are all stunning choices to incorporate into your flower selection. Think about a complementary colour – blue flowers

look particularly beautiful if accented with a white bloom. Classic white roses or calla lilies break up the blue, like surf on a wave, for a gorgeous display. At both Northbrook Park and Froyle Park, hues of blue perfectly coordinate with the regal peacocks that stroll throughout the grounds. If pink is your colour, big bouquets of pretty roses are a classic choice. Then, a single pink rose buttonhole simply, yet effectively, links the bridal party. If you want something a little different, consider pink ranunculi, tulips or pretty sweet peas. Pink flowers also work perfectly as part of a vintage or country garden theme. Choose soft pinks and team them

35

weddings in the south magazine // surrey & hampshire

with greens and creams. These colours work really well for hair circlets or wrist corsages for your bridesmaids and flower girls too. For a summery theme, why not go bold with sunflowers? Dot daisies between these big blooms for a striking contrast of size, texture and colour. Yellow freesias are a delicate alternative to incorporate yellow into your bouquets and buttonholes, as are daffodils or pretty little narcissi. Yellow is a bright, bold choice. Flowers in this colour look lovely with deep reds and oranges, but why not think about a lime green or hot pink accent as a funky option? Whatever flowers you choose, they won’t last much longer than the day itself, but if you choose flowers with a stronger scent, every time you smell that fragrance again, you’ll be whisked right back to the magical ‘I dos’ and first dance. Some pretty flowers with a gorgeous perfume are frangipani, sweet peas, lavender and jasmine. All flowers are beautiful, but, if you feel baffled by all the floral choices, there are some dependable flowers that make great traditional wedding choices. Roses, orchids, peonies and hydrangea all make for wonderful bouquets and displays, but a trusted florist will certainly be able to offer advice if you’re confused by all the options.

Engagement photos not only provide you with a set of beautiful pictures to celebrate your news and share with friends and family, but they help you to feel at ease in front of the camera. This will result in a picture-perfect wedding day, as you feel comfortable and confident.

Choosing the right photographer for you is essential, and arguably the most important decision for your day. It’s their job to preserve memories for you and your loved ones. Start by selecting the style you want, from the traditional to the more creative and increasingly popular reportage shots. Booking your photographer is not something to rush into – do your research and find ‘the one’.

Spend time reviewing their portfolios and make sure that you meet up too – it is important to feel comfortable with them. Referrals and testimonials can help to confirm your decision, along with seeing if they have any awards or press coverage. Know your price limit upfront and make sure that you agree exactly what’s included within your package.

first look An increasingly popular trend, modern couples are opting to set up a first look photo opportunity ahead of the ceremony and away from the wedding party. The first time you lock eyes with your loved one is a tender and intimate experience, which can be best captured in private with these photographs.

practice makes perfect You want your hair and make-up to be perfect, achieving a flawless look throughout the day for all your photographs, so make sure that you have a trial first and that you are completely happy with the results. It can prove very useful to take a camera along to your trial too, as some foundations are highly reflective and can appear white on film. Your make-up should last all day, so put it to the test ahead of your wedding; you don’t want to find out on the day that is has faded and you have not looked your bridal best on camera. Ensure that your make-up is waterproof too, and that you take some along for touch-ups on the day.

calm and collected Always allow for last minute emergencies and start the day at least one hour ahead of schedule: if you run over, you won’t be stressed and your photos can start on time. If you finish earlier, well that just means more photos of a happy bride and groom!

who, what, where and when? One of the most useful things you can do to help both the photographer and yourself is to create a timeline of the day. Decide when and where the photos will take place, allowing plenty of time in the schedule. Obviously things can change on the day but it is useful to have an advance running order to keep things organised. A less-stressed bride is a happy bride… …and a happy bride makes for great photos!

46

picture perfect

location, location, location When choosing your wedding venue, think about the locations of where your wedding photography could take place. Consider both in and outdoor options, as you can’t always rely on the weather! Take into account lighting and ensure that your photographer visits the venue ahead of the big day. Could props complement the setting? From wellies in a field to a bespoke ‘just married’ wooden plaque, props are a great way to add personality and create some really unique photos.

47

delegation is key Stay stress-free and looking great in your pictures; get help. Let someone else take care of things for you, whether it’s a coordinator, friend or maid of honour. All questions should be directed to that person and you will be able to calmly concentrate on being beautiful for the camera.

48

picture perfect

relax and enjoy yourselves The best photos are those of a happy bride and groom, so just relax and enjoy every second of your special day.

relive the action Why not also capture your priceless day on film? There are a number of captivating styles available; from a creative cinematic wedding film, to a stylish, contemporary story of your day. Your videographer will have lots of ideas for inspiration. Film allows you to relive the atmosphere – his aunts giggling after a few champagnes; your friends and family cheering as you enter the reception as newlyweds; your dad’s emotional speech. Remember how your new husband kissed you at the altar and the sound of the congregation singing your chosen hymns. Although you will definitely want still images to frame and keep in an album, remember that your wedding is an event, not a single moment. Days, months, years afterwards, a professional video will take you right back to the action.

your day of dreams

54

your day of dreams

…leave it to the toastmaster As you plan every intricate detail of your wedding, have you considered a toastmaster to help your day run seamlessly?

The toastmaster, or master of ceremonies, takes on numerous roles and responsibilities during your celebration, but their overall duty is to ensure your day is effortlessly wonderful. From the initial planning to the wedding itself, the toastmaster ensures every stage of your wedding runs smoothly, allowing you and your guests to relax. Northbrook Park and Froyle Park wedding couples often choose the services of experienced toastmaster; Iain Pompei. Familiar with both venues, Iain pays meticulous attention to detail while maintaining an unobtrusive presence, so that you can enjoy a perfect wedding day. ‘Many couples don’t realise toastmasters still exist,’ says Iain. ‘They rely on dads, brothers and ushers to help, all of whom can be fabulous, but a toastmaster can take care of everything while family members and friends relax and enjoy the celebration.’ From liaising with suppliers to meeting the bride and groom on arrival with a glass of champagne, Iain coordinates the day, gently taking charge of all the details, right from the word go.

55

weddings in the south magazine // surrey & hampshire

Your wedding is one of the most important days in your life. If you want to relax and enjoy every second… leave it to the toastmaster.

A ‘people-person’ with years of experience of running events, Iain’s day as toastmaster begins before the arrival of the bridal party and guests. He liaises with the events team and caterers and checks the venue, making sure everything is in place for the big day. ‘After confirming that all the flowers are in place and that the decorations are up, I check that the ceremony music is ready to play,’ he says. ‘Or liaise with the musicians and help them to prepare.’ In the reception room, Iain takes care of all the little details from hiding the presents for the groom’s speech to making sure the guest book is available…and that the pen works! He also assists the ushers with the seating plan, relaxing the readers and calming the nervous groom. ‘When the ceremony is complete, I greet the newly married couple with a glass of champagne and escort them to the drinks reception,’ he explains. ‘As the guests follow, I begin to collect cards and gifts so everyone can relax and enjoy the occasion.’ Liaising with the catering manager and staff, canapés and champagne are served to guests while Iain informs them of the itinerary and table plan. He keeps an eye on the clock, liaising with the photographer and videographer. ‘After calling the guests to the receiving line (if requested) and once they are seated, the top table is announced and led to their places. I then prepare for the grand entrance of the bride and groom, “Please be upstanding for the most important couple of the day... the BRIDE & GROOM”,’ he says. ‘The couple is led through the tables to their seats, always to rapturous applause!’

56

Iain goes on to circulate the guest book, start the music and help prepare entertainment, as well as chatting with the guests, acting on behalf of the hosts. When it’s time for the speeches, he introduces each speaker and stays close by - with tissues in hand just in case of tears! ‘Once the cake is cut, the ladies love the throwing of the bouquet,’ he says. ‘I help organise this, which is a lot of fun and helps the guests get into the party mood.’

His role as toastmaster almost complete, Iain gathers all the guests around the dance floor and introduces the first dance. ‘Being the toastmaster is an absolute honour,’ Iain says. ‘I love to help create exceptional memories and make sure a couple’s big day is really special.’

THE MODERN TOASTMASTER Your wedding is one of the most memorable days of your life. I will make sure every moment is exactly how you dreamt it to be, ensuring fine attention to detail, combining fun with finesse, and all with an approachable and easy manner. Let me transform your ideas into memories and make your dreams come true.

“Don’t leave it to chance, leave it to the Toastmaster” Dearest Iain,

We cannot thank you enough for being so much more than the best toastmaster we have met. We couldn’t have wished for a more fun, energetic and on point individual, to organise and “gee-up” our guests. Family and friends have raved about you, we recommend you as two massive fans, Thank you so much.

caterer supplies Your preferred caterers for Northbrook and Froyle can provide the drinks for your special day. You can relax knowing that their experienced staff will look after your guests, keeping their glasses topped up throughout the day. From champagnes and wines that perfectly accompany your menu concept, to a wide selection of premium brand drinks, spirits and soft drinks, your caterer can work with you to accommodate your every desire. For those that would like a cash bar in the evening, your preferred supplier can take of this for you.

you supply, caterer cools If you would prefer to supply the drinks yourself, the caterers will be happy to chill and serve them for you on the day. The best of both worlds for some, you can enjoy the process of selecting and providing your favourite drinks, with a professional service to ensure that your guests are taken care of.

wine merchant It's important that you and your partner enjoy the wines on the day so it's really worth trying before you buy.

Most good wine companies will offer you a sale-or-return deal which can help with costs when you’re not sure exactly how much to buy. As a rule of thumb you should cater for half a bottle of wine, the equivalent to three small glasses, per adult for the wedding breakfast. 59

Always include a wide assortment of interesting and delicious nonalcoholic beverages too. Try hot apple cider for a winter wedding and pink lemonade or fresh brewed iced tea for the summertime.

bar necessities At Northbrook Park you can set the scene for an unforgettable celebration by hiring in a bar to suit your day. Whether it’s a luxury and chic champagne bar or sleek and contemporary – dressed to match your theme, choose a bar that coordinates your drinks space with your wedding. Some companies will include the expertise of a sommelier as well as fully trained mixologists to offer a fabulous cocktail service, adding theatre to your day.

cool cocktails Use your drinks choices to complement your day and create an impression. Choose ingredients and create drinks to match the time of year; elderflower in champagne for spring, mojitos for summer and white Russians for the winter months. You could create a drinks station and hire in retro mason jar dispensers to serve your drinks from, adding decorative elements that reflect your wedding theme.

your wedding, your way

adam & isabelle Photographs by Ella & Laurence Photography

How did you meet?

How about the food?

We met at the Railway pub in Clapham. We spotted each other from across the room and couldn’t stop smiling at each other. Isabelle left with her friends to go to another bar and I had to go after her. I followed her down the road and asked her for her name and for a date. The rest as they say is history – we have been best friends and soulmates ever since!

We chose Tapenade. Isabelle and I could not have been more impressed with the service and staff.

How did he propose? On holiday in LA, Adam took us on a walk up to the Hollywood Observatory to watch the sun rise. Adam wasn’t sure where the path was and led us off-piste up the side of a vertical hill through cactus plants. Realising the moment was lost, Adam played it cool and we ended our hike with me none the wiser. Arriving in Vegas, in a surprise beautiful suite at the Mandarin Oriental, Adam popped the question as we left the room for a romantic dinner. Why did you choose Northbrook Park as your wedding venue? We fell in love instantly with the elegance and charm of the venue, it was exactly what we wanted – formal but relaxed. We loved the brightness of the Vine room and thought the gold colouring around the French doors was beautiful whilst matching our theme and colour scheme. So many elements appealed to us, the walled gardens, the peacocks and the way the Orangery felt like it blended with the outdoors. What did you choose for your entertainment? For the ceremony and drinks reception we had Amy Turk playing the harp. For the evening we had Ollie from Farnham Sound and Lighting as our DJ, he kept everyone on the dancefloor all night. We also hired Academy Allstars who were great and a nice way to bring a live-music buzz to the evening.

Did you have a theme? Our theme was ‘Champagne’. We named the tables after various champagne houses and the centrepieces were champagne magnums holding candles surrounded by wreaths of beautiful flowers put together by Buds floristry. Our place card holders were handmade bowtied champagne corks that our friends and us had been collecting all year. Were there any special touches or surprises on the day? Isabelle’s Uncle and Cousin played an acoustic duet on the guitar of ‘Tears In Heaven’ by Eric Clapton, whilst we were signing the register. This song has a lot of personal meaning to us and our family and it was so moving to have them play it for everyone. What was the highlight? Our highlight has to be the ceremony – sharing those special words in front of so many people that we love was incredible and a moment we will cherish forever. We loved how personal and intimate the ceremony was, with two incredibly personal and emotive readings. We also really look back fondly on the speeches as they were so witty, thoughtful and captivating. What is your advice for couples planning their own wedding? Sometimes DIY is better as it adds a personal touch. We made a lot of the little things for our day and these are the bits that guests most commented on. Also, don’t forget to enjoy the whole experience… so cherish every moment.

vanisha & peter Photographs by Galileo Photography

How did you meet? We met at work, Vanisha and I were both working in the same small hospital How did he propose? We went down to North Devon for a long weekend. We took a picnic to The Valley of The Rocks , just outside Lynton. …after lunch we were walking back to the car past a beautiful spot looking straight out to sea and he got down on one knee! Why did you choose Froyle Park as your wedding venue? We chose Froyle Park for several reasons. Obviously it is a beautiful place and we thought it would be a fantastic location for a summer wedding. In addition it allowed us to have lots of our friends and family stay over at the venue as well as giving us the flexibility to choose our own caterers too which was important to us. What did you choose for your entertainment? We had Dholl drummers and a fantastic DJ – he kept the dance floor full all night.

evening we had a sit down meal. They did a great job and had lots of our guests commented on how much they enjoyed the food. Did you have a theme? We wanted the wedding to reflect both of our cultures so we settled for …… Bollywood meets the English countryside!! Were there any special touches or surprises on the day? We hired a Rickshaw photobooth and it went down a storm! What was the highlight? Just having all out friends and family together in one place for a massive party. What is your advice for couples planning their own wedding? At the time, all the small details seem important and they will go to make your day individual to you….however the day goes by so fast – just remember to enjoy every moment!

How about the food? Our caterers were Annapurna, we had indian street food for lunch served from traditional carts outside and in the

your wedding, your way

rachel & jamie Photographs by Ilaria Petrucci Photography

How did you meet? We originally met at a local pub through a mutual friend, Jamie was very shy so I took it upon myself to approach him a few weeks later in a nightclub and force him to buy me a drink, 8 years on and I’m still always trying to get him to buy me a drink!

wedding cake served as dessert due to the budget being very tight on the food, serving the wedding cake as dessert saved us a great deal of money, and no wedding cake went to waste as I have seen this happen at weddings in the past Did you have a theme? Gold and glamorous cocktail party.

How did he propose? From our first date 8 years ago I feel we have made it a long way, after 3 years together Jamie decided on a holiday to the Caribbean for a friend’s wedding to buy my beautiful ring, once back in England at our favourite restaurant a very nervous Jamie popped the question. Why did you choose Froyle Park as your wedding venue? Once we had finally brought our first house, we started to look at wedding venues, our budget was very small so finding the right venue was very difficult, we spent a long time going from venue to venue, trying to find one that felt right. As soon as we drove into the grounds of Froyle Park it was obvious from the look on mine and Jamie’s faces this was the venue! Standing in the grand ballroom, we were finally beginning to imagine what our wedding would be like. We discussed what we were willing to sacrifice to get married here, choosing a winter date helped bring the cost of the venue down and the dream suddenly began to seem more possible! We eagerly booked the venue and had 20 months to plan and save for our big day. What did you choose for your entertainment? We had a DJ. How about the food? Fusion caterers – Sun blush tomatoes tarts to start, chicken breast with vegetables and roast potatoes for main,

Were there any special touches or surprises on the day? Not on the day but The night before the wedding Jamie had arranged a surprise for me and my bridesmaids to stay in a hotel but would not tell me or the bridesmaids where, I got into my car where there was a note in my glove box with a postcode and instructions on, I followed the sat nav to the Aviator in Farnborough, Jamie knew that I had always wanted to stay at this hotel and never had the guts to splash the cash for a night there. So having dinner and cocktails at this beautiful hotel was the most amazing way to prepare for our wedding. What was the highlight? Seeing Jamie’s face when I walked down the aisle, I forgot the room was filled with over 100 people I only saw Jamie. What is your advice for couples planning their own wedding? If I could do it all again I would put less emphasis on the small details, nobody will notice the petals down the aisle or the 200 tea lights floating around the venue, I also wish that we would have hired a car for after our ceremony to take me and Jamie on a half an hour drive by ourselves to spend a little bit of time together, everything is so busy and crazy on the day you do not get time to spend 5 minutes alone with your new husband or wife so I feel setting aside a bit of time is very important.

anna & chris

an elegant wedding Photographs by Graham Nixon Photography

How did you meet?

How about the food?

We first met in June 2007, at work. We sat next to each other and were friends at first, but then became a couple and were together for four years before we got engaged.

We used a company called Moodies Catering and chose melon and parma ham for the starter and a roast rib of beef with accompaniments for main course. We had a rib of beef for every table and provided a chef’s hat, apron and carving knife, so someone on each table could carve and serve.

How did he propose? Chris surprised me with a weekend in Paris, but I don’t think the proposal went quite as he planned! The Friday before we went we’d been out and had a few too many glasses of wine, so on the Saturday night when we were supposed to be at this lovely restaurant in Paris, where he’s since told me he wanted to propose, we were in the hotel feeling a bit worse for wear. Finally, at the end of our weekend, he proposed. He wanted to be in front of the Eiffel Tower in a quiet spot, but we ended up on Trocadero with hundreds of people all around us, staring and clapping! He got down on one knee and my first words were ‘Get up!’ and then of course I said ‘Yes.’ Why did you choose Northbrook Park for your wedding venue? A friend at work recommended it and when I looked at it online, I fell in love. I knew Chris wanted to get married in an old country manor house, so Northbrook was perfect. The grounds are beautiful and the room that you get married in was really pretty. What did you choose for your entertainment?

Were there any special touches or surprises on the day? We had a quirky seating plan where we had photos of each guest hanging from ribbons in the area between the Vine Room and Orangery. Guests had to find their photo and, on the back, we’d written where they were sitting. What was the highlight? The speeches were great, full of funny jokes and I just loved having all my friends and family in the same place at the same time. Where did you go for honeymoon? We went to Mauritius for two weeks and had an amazing time having spa treatments, doing water sports and swimming with dolphins. What’s your advice for couples planning their own wedding? Making an effort to involve the guests is really worth it, such as how we organised the chef’s hat and aprons for each table. Everyone appreciated it.

A brilliant harpist, called Hayley Wild played as the guests arrived and when I walked up the aisle. We then had a DJ for the evening dancing.
