pretty petals

pretty petals Fresh and fragrant, symbolic of youth, beauty and happiness, dress your day beautifully with fantastic flowers that accentuate your colour palette and theme.

When it comes to wedding flowers, brides are baffled by the variety of beautiful blooms. But with a little help from a friendly florist, you are ensured breathtaking décor and fantastic photos. With such a wide variety available, we take a look at some options when considering the flowers for your big day… Match your flowers to your theme for perfectly pretty décor. Vintage is a popular trend, with dresses finished with lace, pastel colour palettes and hand finished decorations. Choose subtle ivories, soft textures and muted tones, accentuated by deep greens for eye-catching contrast. Coral roses and freesias are perfect for the bride’s bouquet, or lavender for something more unusual with a delicate colour and scent. Why not accessorise with leftover lace from your dress fitting, or soft white feathers that will catch in the breeze? For your coastal wedding with a seaside theme, blue flowers will instantly convey tranquil waters.

Soft blue hydrangeas, nigella and cornflowers are all stunning for your arrangements. A striking alternative is to choose pretty white petals and arrange your flowers with blue ribbon around the stems or vase, reminiscent of pure white foam atop crashing waves. Accessories such as shells and ropes are also fun and effective to incorporate into your coastal decor. If your idea of wedding day bliss is one surrounded by the simple beauty of a country garden, choose a selection of soft pinks, greens and creams. Great flowers for this theme are lilies, ammi majus, gerbera, alstroemeria and fragrant narcissi. Or if you dream in bold, bright colours, tulips are widely available, versatile and eyecatching. But why not make use of the exotic colours in statement stems, such as bird of paradise flowers or orange anthurium? They are also perfect for a tropical theme.

37

weddings in the south magazine // dorset & hampshire edition

Remember, although brides are lucky that many flowers are now grown in greenhouses and available all year round, it is often wise to consider the seasons when choosing your flowers. Seasonal blooms will often look best and complement the time of year that you wed. Out of season stocks, although available, may be more expensive than their in-season counterparts. In spring, peonies, sweet peas, daffodils and freesias are in season and perfectly pretty. And, for a summer wedding, there is plenty of choice; from romantic roses in shades of white, pink and red, to blousy peonies and joyful yellow sunflowers – design your day bursting with colour. Autumn offers warm shades of dahlia and aramanthus, which look fantastic against dark, forest greens. Then winter with its red amaryllis, berried ivy and fluffy pussy willow can offer some very striking displays. With such variety throughout the year, take inspiration from nature and consider seasonal blooms for your wedding day. 38

Once you have chosen your colour palette of petals, don’t forget all the opportunities you have to show off your beautiful flowers. Of course you will carry a bouquet down the aisle, but will you choose a simple hand-tied bunch of your favourites, or a cascading bouquet with flowing flowers? Other options include teardrop designs, a basket of freshly cut stems, an arm bouquet or a simple, single stem accentuated by beads, diamante or ribbon. As you choose, consider your theme, the overall ‘look’ you wish to achieve and, perhaps most importantly, what will make you feel the most comfortable as you walk to meet your soon-to-be husband.

full of flowers, and smaller displays for the ends of pews or rows of chairs, which dresses the room beautifully. Remember that your flowers can always be moved to the reception venue, so that you can make the very most of your perfectly designed displays.

Match your own bouquet to those of your bridesmaids and the bridal party, not forgetting the buttonholes. And then think about the flowers you would like at your wedding venue. A dramatic arch of flowers around the door that you enter through gives a stunning first impression for your friends and family (and your future husband if he turns around to look!). Many brides also choose big vases

Flowers can be incorporated into every aspect of your day; with your hairstyle, wedding car, thank you bouquets and even adorning your cake. So make the most of your beautiful blooms for a fantastically floral celebration.

Table centres can be tailored to your exact wishes from elegant and tall vases to fish bowls with floating petals. Big displays make a grand statement, but remember that it will be difficult for your guests to talk through them. And make sure you don’t block out the view of the top table, as all eyes will be on the blissful newlyweds!

raise a toast

let’s all raise a toast to the ‘perfect day’ Your wedding will be the most important day of your lives: a hazy blur of vows, smiles, laughter, love, and a few tears, the services of a professional Toastmaster or Master of Ceremonies will ensure you are stress-free to savour every precious second.

His role on the day is to always be on hand, keeping an eye on the important little details so you don’t have to, explains Michael Judd; the preferred Toastmaster of both the Christchurch Harbour Hotel & Spa and The Kings. You will usually meet your Toastmaster, a professional at keeping things running smoothly, six weeks before the big day. This is an opportunity to get to know one another, discuss your plans, and offer professional advice. Michael takes us through the important role of the Toastmaster from this point forward… With all your arrangements confirmed, I coordinate your special day. While the bridal party are excitedly getting ready, my responsibilities as Toastmaster have already begun. At the venue, liaison with the Hotel team is essential, ensuring all your meticulous planning has come together. Talking to the florists ensuring the decorations are in place,

before confirming that the ceremony, drinks reception and wedding breakfast music is ready to play. If you are having live music, I help the musicians to prepare and set up so that everything is ready for your arrival. Then I turn my attention to the little, but equally important details: the gifts are ready for the bridegroom’s speech; the microphone is connected and tested; the guestbook is in place and a knife is by the cake. There is nothing to distract you from enjoying your day, as everything is carefully prepared. As the ‘I do’ moment draws near, I help the ushers with the seating plan and welcome your guests. Being relaxed, my presence creates a real sense of occasion as everyone arrives to join your celebration, checking with the registrar that the readers are ready; the relevant interviews have taken place, and then help to arrange the bridal processional party for their headturning entrance.

After the ceremony, it’s time for the bubbles; greeting you as blissful newlyweds, with a glass of Champagne to enjoy your drinks reception. The gifts and cards from guests if appropriate are collected on your behalf, circulate the guest book and canapés are served with Champagne, so that you and your guests are completely free to share this magical moment together.

While your guests are entertained and mingling, confirming with hotel management and the catering team that all is prepared, I take you both to see your wedding breakfast room for the first time. It is a moment to pause together during your whirlwind day, and if any changes need to be made, I make sure they happen before your guests are welcomed to the receiving line.

To make sure that you have a wedding album bursting with beautiful photos, if required assist the photographer to coordinate all of the photographs you have requested. Announcing the family and friends required for each shot, and make sure everyone is present, so you will be stress-free and beaming in every picture.

Once they are seated, I announce you as a married couple to a rapturous standing ovation from your family and friends. During the wedding breakfast, I announce the iconic cutting of the cake, and when it’s time for the speeches, introduce each speaker individually. To ensure this fun and often emotional part of your

celebration is seamless, I am on hand throughout to assist the bridegroom and the bride when presenting flowers and gifts. After the best man’s finale speech, drawing proceedings to an official close, my role as Toastmaster is about to finish as I gather your guests and welcome you both for the first dance of the evening. I then leave you on the dance floor, celebrating with your friends and family as newlyweds at the end of your perfect wedding day. The finer details make a wedding extra special – a day that will stay in the memories of your guests long after the confetti settles. From the perfect chair covers that tie into your scheme, to chauffeured transport that makes you feel like royalty, you have limitless choices to create an utterly bespoke celebration. Have a look at these ideas for inspiration… ‘Save the date’ cards and invitations are the very first glimpse your guests will have

68

of your magical day. You want to make a great impression and stunning stationery can say just as much as the message it delivers. Co-ordinating invitations with orders of service, menus and thank you cards, evokes understated sophistication and allows you as a couple to communicate your style and personality throughout the day (and beyond!). Your wedding gown is the princess-dress from your dreams, so on your wedding day make sure you feel every inch the

Cinderella-bride. Glow from topto-toe with pampered tresses adorned with a tiara, flowers or gleaming pearls. With your hair curled and perfectly pinned, your dress laced up and flower girls ready, it’s time to travel in style to meet your soon-to-be husband. Choose transport that matches your theme and makes your day magical - be that a sleek red and roaring Ferrari or classic and vintage Rolls-Royce.

the finer details

The wheels you choose have the power to turn heads and get your guests talking, so some couples choose something a little less conventional – why not arrive in a vintage VW camper van? The perfect arrival for these relaxed coastal settings. If you really want to wow your guests when they enter your reception chair covers add instant elegance and luxury, transforming the humble chair from a practical place to sit, to an important part of your décor. Use organza or taffeta sashes to transform

the venue into your own wedding wonderland, incorporating your chosen colour into every aspect of the decoration. Once your guests have cleared their plates, the cutting of the cake is a photo album favourite, and the cake itself the grand finale of your wedding breakfast. Although classically elegant white-icing tiers are ever popular and beautiful; many couples opt for cupcakes or even cakepops to carry their personality and theme through.

If you’re inviting children to your wedding you may want to consider a wedding crèche – keeping the kids entertained and avoiding any spoilt speeches and spilt drinks! The perfect solution, you can relax as they enjoy themselves under the supervision of expert childcare. We are lucky to have a host of fantastic suppliers on our doorstep here in Christchurch, with all of the finishing touches to make your day truly original.

your wedding, your way

jade & dean

the caribbean in christchurch Photographs by Nick Rutter Photography

How did you meet? We met at work, working for Townends Estate Agents. It was another member of Staffs leaving party. How did you propose? Dean proposed in the Grand Bahamas. We were on holiday and the whole family was in on it. We went out for a date night whilst the rest of the family set up the proposal ready for when we got back. Dean had planned it all but when we got back a heart had been drawn in the sand filled with candles and inside was written ‘Marry Me’ with 2 deck chairs and a bottle of champagne. Why did you choose the venue? We did initially want to get married abroad but we also wanted all our friends and family to be there, which we thought wouldn’t happen if we went abroad so we decided to do it by the sea. We go down to the Christchurch area quite a lot so decided to look at the Christchurch Harbour Hotel & Spa and we instantly fell in love with the hotel and the view. We thought it still had the holiday feel with the sea but wasn’t too far from home. We had a Caribbean theme throughout the day because of the location of the proposal. What did you do for entertainment? We had a Caribbean band for the reception drinks due to the theme we had. We had casino tables in the evening as we went to the casino a lot in the Grand Bahamas and we just had a DJ.

What food did you choose? This was the only part that wasn’t Caribbean. We had Scotch egg with duck confit for starter as this is one of my favourites, pork belly for main and banana crème Brule for dessert as again this is my favourite. We had a BBQ in the evening which was fantastic and bacon baps at midnight! Any surprises on the day? We had imported Sands beer all the way from the Bahamas for the guests and made Bahama Mamas for cocktails. Sands has only been into the UK once before so it took a long time but was well worth it for guests to try a new beer! What was the best part of the day? All of it! It is very hard to choose one thing! For me I loved the evening once the music had started as I knew I could fully relax by this point. I really couldn’t choose a best part because I really did love every minute of the day. Where did you go for honeymoon? As we have our little boy and didn’t want to leave him he did come with us so it was more of a family holiday. We went to Disneyland Paris for 3 nights and then flew on to Portugal for 10 days. We will be doing a honeymoon in the New Year when he has started school. What is your advice for couples planning their own wedding? Enjoy every second, the day just flies by.

natalie & john

relaxed coastal elegance Photographs by BH13 Photography How did you meet? We met quite randomly through friends; we are from different towns so it was a fluke encounter. Natalie went out one night and bumped into John’s friends, who were down in Sandbanks for a special dinner. Natalie got chatting to them and met John eventually through them. How did you propose? John proposed at Simon Cowell’s local, very beautiful restaurant, ‘Daphne’s’ in Barbados. Why did you choose the venue? We wanted a classy wedding that was relaxed so Christchurch Harbour Hotel & Spa seemed the perfect venue. We loved the fact it was also on the water and the views it had. What did you do for entertainment? It was a relaxed day, so had nothing over the top at all for entertainment. The entertainment was the venue itself. Everyone relaxed and felt as if they were on holiday! Most people said it was the best wedding they had ever been too. The evening do was a blast. Had a fantastic well known DJ Jay Rachet who kept the party going and even at the end of the night everyone chanted for ‘one more song’ – so was never a dull moment.

and roasted tomatoes for main and a chocolate dish to die for, for dessert. The food was fantastic and the service was class too. As noticed by everyone. Also all the canapés were delicious. Any surprises on the day? Not to my knowledge! The sun shone! What was the best part of the day? This is a hard question, because we literally enjoyed every minute! Probably enjoying the beautiful grounds and views and drinking champagne with all my family and friends after saying I do! And the evening party was absolutely fantastic! Where did you go for Honeymoon? We were lucky enough to have two honeymoons! A weekend in Paris straight after the wedding then two months later we had our real honeymoon in the Kuramathi Island in the Maldives. 10 days of absolute heaven on earth. What is your advice for couples planning their own wedding? Our advice is to be organised, but relax! Book your venue and registrar before anything else, but most of all don’t get stressed out just before and wish it was all over before you’re even married! Enjoy every minute as will be a day you’ll cherish forever! Ours was!

What food did you choose? We chose the smoked salmon to start, lamb with dauphinoise potatoes

sunshine sweethearts Photographs by Amanda Clay Photography How did you meet? It was about 8 years ago and we were in a nightclub… not the most romantic meeting! But a few years ago we discovered that Gary was in the background of some of the photos my friend and I had taken of ourselves earlier that night, before Gary and I had even met. That confirmed our belief that we were meant to be together!

requirements. The food we had was excellent and many of the guests also commented on how good the food was. We had Smoked Salmon to start, then Lamb with dauphinois potatoes and our desert was an Eton mess cheesecake (a combination of our two favourite deserts). Any surprises on the day? Beautiful weather and how fast the day went!

How did you propose? I came home from work one evening and Gary was cooking dinner, which was lovely. I went upstairs to have a bath and he came up a few minutes later and the next thing I knew he was down on one knee asking me to marry him! It was perfect and just right for us.

What was the best part of the day? The whole day was amazing so it is really hard to choose… but two really special moments were walking down the aisle towards Gary with ‘Songbird’ playing and having a glass of champagne together straight after the ceremony.

Why did you choose the venue? We had stayed at the hotel earlier in the year and had such a lovely weekend. We both love being by the sea and the thought of being married over looking the sea was very appealing to us.

Where did you go for honeymoon? We went to Thailand 3 days after our wedding. We began in Bangkok and then went to Elephant Hills for a 3day/ 2 night elephant and lake experience. Then we spent 10 days relaxing in Koh Samui. It was absolutely wonderful!!

What did you do for entertainment? We had an acoustic guitarist playing on the wedding terrace after the wedding breakfast and then we had a live band playing during the evening party. It worked really well in the room downstairs in the hotel as if people wanted to dance they could, but if they wanted to drink and chat they could stay in the bar area. What food did you choose? We had canapés during the drinks reception and then a three course wedding breakfast. I have a few food intolerances and the hotel was very accommodating to my dietary

What is your advice for couples planning their own wedding? Think carefully about your photographer, as they will be your wedding day memories for the rest of your lives! You think you will remember the day but it goes so quickly and there is so much to take in that the photos really help you to capture the day afterwards. We wanted to focus more on the informal photos than the formal ones and that is why we chose Amanda as our photographer. Both her formal and informal photos are fantastic. She was lovely to work with and fitted right in with our guests.

lauren & paul

love & laughter on the lawn Photographs by Barry Whitcher How did you meet? We met through mutual friends at a pub in Paul’s home town in Southampton. A lot of travelling between London and Southampton followed before we finally moved in together in 2012. How did you propose? Paul: We were in Granada, Spain with a group of friends celebrating my birthday. I had planned it for a while and I got down on one knee at the Alhambra in front of one of the arched windows overlooking the old town. Lauren: The proposal was certainly romantic - the fact that we had to celebrate in a not so romantic Irish bar so that Paul could watch the football gave me a good indication of what married life would be like. Why did you choose the venue? We found the Kings Arms through an Internet search and after one short visit, and meeting the team, we knew that it was perfect. The surrounding area is so picturesque and the venue was able to support exactly the informal, family friendly day we were after. What did you do for entertainment? We spent the afternoon on the green and had a number of garden games for the children to play with. Opting for a later wedding breakfast we didn’t need evening entertainment and instead enjoyed a leisurely meal with our own playlist playing in the background.

What food did you choose? The chef was very accommodating and allowed us to design our own menu. We went with the salmon starter from the menu suggestions and requested the family favourite of toad in the hole for the main course, followed by a chocolate and cherry dessert. It was all delicious and beautifully presented. Any surprises on the day? None - everything went exactly as planned. What was the best part of the day? Lauren: Celebrating with our guests over champagne after the ceremony. Paul: The sausages! Where did you go for honeymoon? We have booked a break to Langkawi for March next year and can’t wait. What is your advice for couples planning their own wedding? Don’t panic about the small things - We spent countless hours planning the minutest of details which we barely noticed on the day. And most importantly try to relax - the team at the King’s really do make sure that everything is taken care of.

richard & jane

seaside serenity Photographs by Taylor Made Photography How did you meet? We me through work: Jane’s employer was one of my employer’s clients. How did he propose? It was in August 2010 when we were on the beach in Playa Del Carmen in Mexico. Richard got down on one knee to pop the question. Did you have a theme? We chose a ‘seaside’ theme as much as possible to reflect the stunning location. What were your flowers like? We chose bright bouquets which were mainly hot pink and purple. We also had a trail of flowers to decorate the wedding cake. What catering did you choose for your wedding? The Christchurch Harbour Hotel & Spa’s catering team took care of this for us. We’d eaten in the restaurant on previous occasions and loved the food. Everything was perfect on the day. We chose a traditional chicken roast dinner as it was a Sunday. Later, we had an evening buffet which was also fantastic. Why did you choose Christchurch for your venue? Jane’s family have a very special tie to Christchurch as she has always visited regularly with her parents and grandparents. Also, we wanted a wedding close to the sea. The location couldn’t have been more perfect. We visited the Hotel one evening in October and it was a beautiful day with the most amazing views and a fantastic sunset. We just fell in love with the place.

What did you choose for your entertainment? We used Richard Welsh from Party Nights Out. He was excellent – engaging the crowd perfectly and choosing music that was spot on. Were there any special touches on the day? Jane’s parents surprised Jane and me with a white starlit dance floor for the evening, which looked absolutely amazing. What was your favourite moment? The whole day was amazing for us… I can’t even try to choose a favourite moment! Where did you go for your honeymoon? As we have children, we stayed in the Dorset area for the week after the wedding. We went to Naish Holiday Park, a few miles from Christchurch, and stayed in a cabin there. What is your advice for couples planning their own wedding? Go with your heart, shop around, make purchases and place orders via a credit card to give you extra cover if things do go wrong – our first choice photographer and videographer went bust a year before the wedding and we’d paid the full amount in advance, so luckily the credit card company covered us for that. Also, we’d absolutely recommend Christchurch Harbour Hotel & Spa as a venue because they helped everything go perfectly.
