VISUAL ARTS & CONTEMPORARY CRAFTS Altered Art

Clay Vessels

Grades: 9-12 (half or full-day)

Grades: 9-12 (full-day)

This programme explores students’ self-expression and identity. In the half-day programme, students alter their profile through a variety of techniques such as collage, weaving and paper techniques. In the full-day programme, you have the choice of having students remain in the studio to further alter their images through print-making or combine visual arts with media studies, and take studentsto the media lab to represent themselves in digital form. VA

A vessel is more than a container; it reveals insights into the artist and his or her culture. Using various hand-building techniques, your students create their own clay vessels. Students also learn the rich history of clay vessels, from Greek Amphorae to contemporary craft, as seen in our incredible ceramic studio. VA HIST

Clay The day includes an engaging discussion of the properties and characteristics of clay, a visit to our ceramic studio, a demo of hand-building techniques and the chance for students to create a sculpture on one of the following themes:

NEW Clay Portraits Grades: 9-12 (full-day)

Students explore the rich history of clay busts/portraits as a starting point for both monumental works and contemporary craft. Using a variety of hand-building techniques, students create their own clay head “in the round.” VA HIST

Clay Masks Grades: 9-12 (full-day)

In our clay mask programme, students are given the chance to explore hand-building techniques and discover the creative possibilities of clay! The tradition of mask-making reaches across a variety of cultures and provides inspiration for students to make their own unique mask. VA HIST

Note: The residents in the ceramic studio will fire students’ work for a charge of $3.50 per piece (including HST), if desired. This is a bisque fire ONLY, which strengthens the clay but will not make the piece watertight and/or usable. This is NOT a glazing fire.

Collagraph Printmaking Grades: 9-12 (full-day)

Students examine printed artwork by celebrated artists from around the world. They rediscover texture through the art of collagraph. Best of all, they design, create and print a series of beautiful collagraph prints. VA

Contemporary Art Exploration Grades: 9-12 (half or full-day)

In this gallery-based programme, students explore the varied contemporary art displayed at Harbourfront Centre. Based on current exhibitions, students tour our galleries such as York Quay allery, our craft corridor and The Power Plant. In the full-day programme, students create an art piece to reflect their gallery experience. VA

Painting: Still Life

Grades: 9-12 (half or full-day)

Your students learn the techniques of relief printmaking using a soft linoleum block and create their own unique series of prints. In a full-day workshop, students have the option to visit the Museum of Inuit Art and explore the history and beauty of Inuit Art. Talk to our registrar for further information. In this exciting workshop, your students examine a selection of contemporary and historic still life paintings to gain an understanding of how artists explore form, space, texture, colour and light. Students also experiment with a variety of drawing and painting techniques and create their own still life painting. VA

Textile Arts

Grades: 9-12 “Social Awareness� (full-day)

Discover why artists of the past and present are inspired by the outdoors. The Harbourfront Centre site allows students great possibilities to engage their passions. Some students may look to the lake to capture the natural world in their paintings, while others may be drawn towards the built environment. VA

Textile arts often bring together communities and encourage collaboration. Your students discuss contemporary and traditional textile works that have encouraged social change and awareness. Using recycled fabrics, collage and fibre arts techniques, students create a collaborative piece based on their vision of a hopeful, healthy and inclusive world community. VA HIST

Urban Art Grades: 9-12 (full-day)

In this programme, students explore the legitimacy and artistic merit of urban art. Your students gain an understanding of the history of graffiti and the social conditions which led to its evolution. Through a slide show presentation, examples of urban art and the works of influential urban artists including Banksy, Keith Haring, Basquiet and Roadsworth are discussed. Students then create a work of art using graffiti stencil techniques as a tool for inspiring social change. VA | HIST SS

LITERARY ARTS Hand Bound Books Grades: 9-12 (full-day)

Hand bound books have evolved into a contemporary art form. Students learn the rich history of books and see examples of contemporary artist books. In this workshop, your students learn techniques to create their own books. VA LIT SS HIST

MEDIA ARTS Advertising/Print Media

Altered Art

Grades: 9-12 (half and full-day)

Grades: 9-12 (half or full-day)

Using our computer lab, students learn about the world of advertising. We introduce the “methods of manipulation� used in advertising and explore the impact advertising has on our environment and society. Students also create their own print ad. When two classes are visiting, you can pair your media experience with a half-day Lino printmaking workshop to further explore the ideas of logos and branding. ML VA SS LIT

In this programme, students get the opportunity to consider how to represent themselves in the digital form. Students are taught the basics of using a digital camera, and embark on a brief personal photo shoot. Using these pictures, students recreate a digital image of the self. In the full-day option, students can stay in the media lab or switch over to our visual arts studio and combine this programme with the Visual Arts Altered Art programme. ML VA

Digital Photography Grades: 9-12 (full-day)

Your students learn the basics of photography, go on a photo shoot, and use our Media Lab to explore ways of manipulating images in the creation of photographic artworks. ML VA SS LIT

NEW Digital Storytelling (Launching January 2013) Grades: 9-12 (full-day)

In our newest Media Studies programme, students are introduced to a variety of techniques to write, create and illustrate their own stories. A brief history of storytelling and the impact of new technologies on this ancient art form provide the context for students to spend the day creating in our Media Lab! ML VA SS LIT

PERFORMING ARTS NEW Choreography Grades: 9-12 (full-day)

Urban Dance

In our newest performing arts programme, students create, rehearse and perform their own dance piece. Our experienced dance instructors introduce new vocabulary and guide students through the process to develop their own performance, which they can perform for their peers! PFA

From street to stage, urban dance presents new ways to move. Your students develop their own urban dance vocabulary, and become acquainted with a method of expression through movement and discovery. PFA HIST

Understanding Hip Hop Lets Slam! Spoken Word Performance Art Grades: 9-12 (full-day)

Explore the world of spoken word performance. Students discover its art and history going on to learn the rules and elements of spoken word competitions (known as Poetry Slams). They write pieces expressing themselves in a contemporary style, as well as hosting their very own slam competition. Who will walk away with the title of top spoken word artist of your class? Theatre for Change Grades: 9-12 (full-day)

The Theatre of the Oppressed was developed by Brazilian theatre director Augusto Boal. It’s an exciting and interactive tool for social and political change that transforms traditional performance into a “dialogue” between the audience and the stage. Students develop their problem solving, rhetoric, and group work skills as well as increase their social and political awareness. They also explore the fundamentals of character building, storytelling and the various forms of language. Get on the stage! PFA HIS SJE

The roots and elements of hip hop are showcased through MCing, graffiti, urban percussion and dance. Students explore the contemporary impact of hip hop and its ability to empower self expression. PFA HIST

URBAN STUDIES NEW Architectural Explorations

Our City Toronto Grades: 9-12 (full-day)

Grades: 9-12 (full-day)

This unique programme takes place in Toronto’s business district, providing your students with an opportunity to discover all components (historical changes, land use, urban planning) of Toronto’s downtown core. As an added bonus, students gain exclusive access to the 54th floor of the Mies van der Rohe TD Centre! GEO HIST

Waterfront Revitalization

Grades: 9-12 (full-day)

Encounter a kaleidoscope of culture in two of Toronto’s most interesting and diverse communities. Your students gain an understanding of changing demographic patterns and uncover the fascinating cultural histories of Kensington Market and Chinatown. GEO HIST

Review the past, present and future uses of Toronto’s waterfront! Walking the site, students discover the many changes which have taken place and discuss Waterfront Toronto’s mandate for the Revitalization Project. In addition, students will check our Sarah Hall’s new solar art glass installation, Waterglass. SCI GEO HIST VA

Our newest Urban Studies programme starts off at City Hall where students will begin an “architecture crawl” discovering the unique history of buildings past and present. A full-day winter adventure! This programme features a half-day arts programme of your choice, paired with a half-day of skating on our gorgeous Rink! Outdoor Education at Harbourfront Centre (May and June) Grades: 9-12 (full-day)

Bring your students down to our 10-acre site to discover all avenues of the waterfront. Use this opportunity to have your students learn while exploring the outdoors. SS | GEO | HIST | SCI | VA Choose two of the following activities:

Activity Option 3: On the Water* Anchors aweigh! Students have the option of experiencing Toronto’s Waterfront on an hour long guided boat tour through the Inner Harbour! Choose from a variety of grade appropriate activities to compliment the water exploration.

*Important: Outdoor Education at Harbourfront Centre Safety Notice. Harbourfront Centre, as well as passenger vessel operators, hold liability insurance. Prior to a voyage, departure safety announcements are required which include a demonstration of how to wear a life jacket and the locations of life saving devices. All vessels are Transport Canada Marine Safety inspected annually and carry sufficient life saving apparatus for the maximum number of permitted passengers. All vessels are operated by Transport Canada Marine Safety certified captains and crew. Testing to obtain such certificates include, but is not limited to; medical fitness, marine emergency training, first aid and navigation. Captains monitor regularly updated radio forecasts and determine if the weather is suitable enough for a voyage based on information from Environment Canada.

The PowerPlant The Clock September 22-November 25, 2012

Around the world, people have lined up to experience American artist Christian Marclay’s The Clock. Unique and compelling, The Clock is an ode to time and the cinema comprised of thousands of fragments from a vast range of films.

Tickets: $18 performance, Q&A, and visual arts workshop. A new performance created by Wen Wei Wang on social justice and identity. "The work is a personal exploration into the realization of one’s true nature, despite the many external societal forces that constrain and inhibit”.

The Art of Design

March 5-8, 2013

What makes a good chair or even a toothbrush? The answer is the design. Students investigate the design and architecture exhibitions at Harbourfront Centre using them as inspiration to design an original product or environment.

$14 per student Marimekko is a Finnish design firm with significant global influence in printed textiles. Celebrate international design with a visit to the TMC to see an exhibition offering a retrospective look at Marimekko’s origins and the role of the textile and clothing company in contemporary decorative arts, design and culture. The other half of the day will be at Harbourfront Centre, where students create a printed textile inspired by the patterns in the exhibition.

In Autumn 2012, the theme will be “Contemporary French Design.”

Staging the World A great opportunity for students to watch a professional dance performance, talk to the performers and take a supplementary workshop. This year's dance companies are: Toronto Dance Theatre November 2012

Co-op Placement Programme School Visits offers placement opportunities for students interested in the arts and teaching. Co-op students work with and support teachers and students in a vibrant and creative environment at Harbourfront Centre, one of Canada’s foremost arts and cultural centres. Students develop skills in leadership, communication, organization, teamwork and work towards becoming a confident member of the School Visits team. REGISTRATION Book early and SAVE! There’s no better way to start off your year than with an excursion to Harbourfront Centre. Visit Harbourfront Centre in the months of September and October and pay a reduced rate of only $11 per student.* For more information, contact the School Visits Registrar at 416-973-4091 or email registrar@harbourfrontcentre.com or go to harbourfrontcentre.com/schoolvisits Please have the following information ready when you register: Please note: There is a non-refundable deposit required per school at the time of confirmation to hold your place. Deposit for a half-day programme is $100 and $150 • Your choice of programme • Full-day or half-day • Your first and second choices for date of visit • Number and grade level of students • Name, mailing address, telephone and fax numbers of school • Email address of main contact person • Name(s) of accompanying teacher(s) and their email address(es) for a full-day programme. Schools booking multiple days are required to pay a deposit for each day. A $150 cancellation fee per class cancelled will be charged to the school if a booking is cancelled less than two (2) weeks prior to your visit date. Once bookings have been made, changes are subject to an administration fee of $25. Subsidy is available on a case-by-case basis for students or schools in need, pending availability and subject to change. Contact the Registrar for criteria details.
