This spring, Junior, Harbourfront Centre’s new international children’s festival, brings together leading contemporary artists to animate young minds. Productions from as far away as Australia and Norway to as near as Québec and the Mohawk Nation of Kahnawake take on the challenging questions facing youth today. These acclaimed performances are the perfect opportunity for youth to explore identity, growth, belonging and transformation. Fun for the whole family continues throughout the long weekend with free activities like circus, storytelling, music and great food!

ienvenue à Junior. Ce printemps, Junior, le nouveau festival international des enfants du Harbourfront Centre, réunit de grands artistes contemporains pour défier et stimuler les jeunes esprits. Des réalisations artistiques d’aussi loin que l’Australie et la Norvège et d'aussi près que le Québec et la Nation Mohawk de Kahnawake, abordent les questions difficiles que les jeunes d’aujourd’hui affrontent. Ces spectacles remarquables sont l’occasion idéale pour les enfants d’explorer les sujets de l’identité, de la croissance, de l’appartenance et de la transformation. Les activités se poursuivent pour toute la famille, durant la longue fin de semaine, avec de nombreux spectacles et ateliers gratuits. Cirque, musique, récits et surprises culinaires au programme !

In the years leading into and out of elementary school, kids aged four to fourteen fill their minds with elemental questions: Who am I? Where do I fit in? We know that even though they are young, kids still face the same issues as adults. Junior invites you to explore these questions through theatre, dance, puppetry, and performances from around the corner and around the world. All the performances at Junior are unified around a common goal – exploring big thoughts for growing minds.
We are proud and excited to offer children and their families the chance to experience innovative theatre, dance, music and puppetry from Canada and around the world. To name a few: The Jury from Norway turns the idea of children’s theatre on its head, Québec’s Suites Curieuses shines an entirely new light on classic fairy tales, and Australia’s New Owner blurs the boundaries between stage and animation. The Medicine Wheel and We Are All Treaty People creatively address the history of First Nations peoples in Canada and the importance of forging relationships across boundaries.
Dans les années qui précèdent et suivent le primaire, les enfants de quatre à quatorze ans se posent des questions fondamentales : qui suis-je et quelle est ma place dans le monde ? Malgré leur jeune âge, ils réfléchissent aux mêmes problèmes auxquels sont confrontés les adultes. Voilà pourquoi tous les spectacles de Junior tournent autour d’un objectif commun : mobiliser et aborder ces grandes idées pour des esprits en croissance.

To share the importance of this sacred circle to many First Nations people, Barbara Kaneratonni Diabo and Marian Atehawi Snow of the Mohawk Nation of Kahnawake lovingly created this all-ages performance using mask, face paint, traditional storytelling, and contemporary and traditional dance.

Sometimes we don’t know what we are looking for until we have found it. Bernie is a boisterous puppy waiting to be chosen from the animal shelter. Mabel is a lonely widow, trying to fill the hole in her heart. The day they find each other is the beginning of a beautiful friendship, but Mabel is old and Bernie is young – and suddenly alone. Combining puppetry, live action and animation, New Owner shows us a world of adventure through a dog’s eyes.
Parfois nous ne savons pas ce que nous cherchons jusqu’à ce que nous l’ayons trouvé. Dans un refuge pour animaux, Bernie est un chiot débordant d’énergie dans l’attente d’un nouveau propriétaire. Mabel est une veuve solitaire qui essaye de combler le vide dans son cœur. C’est le coup de foudre instantané et le début d’une belle amitié mais Mabel est vieille et Bernie est jeune - deux univers différents. Who knows better than a child what a performance for children should be like? Dancers begin to perform to classical music when children’s voices suddenly ring out: “What are they doing? I don’t understand anything! This is boring!” The children decide that since this is supposed to be a performance for kids, they should be the ones deciding what it’s about. The results are hilarious, beautiful and captivating as the dancers follow the children’s directions to the letter.
Qui connaît mieux qu’un enfant comment devrait se dérouler un spectacle pour enfants ? Des danseurs voltigent au rythme d’une musique classique quand tout à coup des voix d’enfants retentissent : « Que font-ils ? Je ne comprends plus rien ! C’est ennuyeux ! ». Parce que c’est un spectacle pour enfants, ces derniers décident qu’ils devraient en être les concepteurs ! Les danseurs obéissent à ces metteurs en scène en herbe et le résultat est drôle, touchant et captivant !

Getting Here Directions By foot / À pied Head south on York Street from Union Station to Queens Quay and west one block. Depuis la gare Union, marcher en direction du sud sur la rue York pour atteindre Queens Quay West. Tourner à droite sur Queens Quay West et marcher un pâté de maisons.
