Dear Educators, Situated on Toronto’s beautiful waterfront in downtown Toronto, Harbourfront Centre is an innovative, not-for-profit contemporary arts facility offering events and activities in a broad range of disciplines including visual arts, music, dance, theatre, new media, craft and more. Our vibrant School Visits programme encourages students of all ages to engage with the arts, immersing them in the creative learning process while surrounded by a positive, inclusive and visually inspiring environment. Harbourfront Centre’s team of passionate educators are dedicated to providing meaningful, curriculum-linked programmes that meet a number of overall expectations in the Ontario curriculum. Our multidisciplinary approach gives you the opportunity to tap into a broad spectrum of curriculum areas within a single visit. Time and again, teachers are amazed by the creativity and enthusiasm demonstrated by their students as they consider new techniques, materials, ideas and perspectives. Harbourfront Centre’s newly revitalized 10-acre site is a home for inspiration. Students can explore our beautiful location through guided photo shoots for our Digital Photography programme, sketching activities for our Acrylic Landscape programme, or even a guided site walk for our Urban Studies programmes to name but a few. Your choice of programme Full-day or half-day Your first and second choices for date of visit Number and grade level of students Name, mailing address, telephone and fax numbers of school Email address of main contact person Name(s) of accompanying teacher(s) and their email address(es)

Please note: There is a non-refundable deposit required per school at the time of confirmation to hold your place. Deposit for a half-day programme is $100 and $150 for a full-day programme. Schools booking multiple days are required to pay a deposit for each day. If a booking is cancelled without re-booking less than two weeks prior to the scheduled visit date, the non-refundable deposit will be forfeited. Once bookings have been made, changes to the visit date, programme choices and an addition or subtraction of five or more students per class, are subject to an administration fee of $25. Subsidy is available on a case-by-case basis for students or schools in need, pending availability and is subject to change. Contact the Registrar for criteria details.

School Visits Fees Full-day: $14 per student Half-day: $11 per student Two half-day programmes: $14 per student Please encourage your students on a full-day programme to bring lunch and a snack. Students booked for half-day programmes are encouraged to bring a morning or afternoon snack. Please keep in mind that Harbourfront Centre is a peanut-aware building, and encourages all school groups to prohibit students from bringing nut or nut-related products with them. PERFORMING ARTS DANCE

Altered Art

Grades 9-12 (half-day or full-day) Using their own profile as inspiration, students explore print making, collage and paper sculpture techniques to alter their images. VA

Choreography

Grades 9-12 (full-day) Students learn the basics of dance composition while creating their own choreographed works. DAN

Book Arts

Grades 9-12 (half-day, full-day) Explore dance in exciting new ways through movement and rhythm. Choose your discipline: African and South American. DAN | SS

Hand Bound Books: Grades 9-12 (full-day) Students explore the art and history of book making as they create their own handmade artist books. HIS | LAN | SS | VA

Understanding Hip Hop

Clay

Paper Sculpture/Paper Masks

Grades 9-12 (full and half-day) Inspired by the fascinating history of masks, students will learn paper sculpture techniques to create beautiful dramatic, three dimensional masks. HIS | SS | VA

Print Making

Textile Arts

Engaging with the work of traditional and contemporary textile artists, students create a collaborative piece using collage and fiber art techniques to illustrate the need for social change. Social Awareness Grades 9-12 (full-day) HIS | SS | VA

Urban Art

Grades 9-12 (full-day) Students examine the works of influential urban artists and discuss the legitimacy and merit of urban art. Using stencil techniques, they create their own work inspiring social change. HIS | SS | VA

Grades 9-12 (full-day) Students discover the architectural styles to be found throughout the downtown core. Sites visited include City Hall, Roy Thomson Hall, the CBC Building and a discussion of the current exhibition in Harbourfront Centre’s Architectural Gallery. SS | VA | OFFSITE

Grades 9-12 (full-day) Immerse your students in a kaleidoscope of culture through two of Toronto’s most diverse communities. GEO | HIS | SS | OFFSITE

Toronto Dance Theatre

November 7, 2013 Grade 7-12 Icons and Ergons Toronto Dance Theatre presents a driving, kinetic new work by artistic director Christopher House set to Music for Eighteen Musicians, the celebrated masterwork by American minimalist composer Steve Reich. Students will participate in a dance workshop and a contemporary gallery tour.

Dance Works

Grades 9-12 (half or full-day) After a lively discussion of the methods of manipulation used in popular media, students create their own advertisements focusing on issues of social justice. LAN | SS | VA

Introduction to Digital Photography

Grades 9-12 (full-day) This introductory programme teaches students the basics of digital photography and photo manipulation techniques in our media lab. ML | VA

Digital Story Telling

Grades 9-12 (full-day) Students examine the history of storytelling, organize a photo shoot and explore ways to create a digital story. LAN | VA

Grade 9-12 (full-day) Students learn the rules and elements of spoken word to create their own pieces and host their own slam. DRA | LAN

MEDIA ARTS

Grades 9-12 (full-day) Students explore a variety of urban dance forms, develop their own urban dance vocabulary and see how these can be used to inspire movement and self expression. DAN | SS

Grades 9-12 (full-day) The world of hip hop is introduced to students as they learn about its roots and links with other urban art such as graffiti, DJing, and rap. DAN | SS

Painting

Urban Dance

February 21, 2014 Grade 9-12 A Soldiers Tale –Signal Theatre This theatrical dance explores the lives of Aboriginal soldiers over the span of 50 years. Make it a full day by pairing this performance with a School Visits workshop exploring social justice.

The Power Plant Micah Lexier: One, and Two, and More Than Two

September 20 – January 5 Showcasing the work of Toronto-based artist, Micah Lexier, this exhibition explores concepts of measurement, increment, passage of time, sequence, patterning, language and systems of organization. It also includes an ambitious curatorial project by Lexier which features the work of 101 Toronto artists. Students respond to the show by participating in hands-on lino printmaking workshop.

SEASONAL PROGRAMMING

Architecture Gallery School Work: Innovative Designs for Education

September 20 – December 22 This exhibition looks at how students and faculty use classrooms and schools now, and purpose spaces that become educational tools for the future through inspired design. Students visit the exhibit and participate in a hands-on workshop to create their ideal educational environment.

York Quay Gallery Studio Focus: Excellence Past and Present

January 24 – April 20 Bring your students to experience an exhibition which presents a view of Harbourfront Centre’s artist-in-residency programme through the extraordinary work of the artists who have created and worked within the studio. Students tour the craft studios then create a ceramic or textile piece of their own.

Textile Museum – Partnership

March 4-7 Celebrate art, culture and design with a special exhibition tour at the Textile Museum of Canada. Inspired by sketches made in the exhibition, students create their own textile at Harbourfront Centre during the second part of the day.

Make and Skate December until March Break

A full-day winter adventure! This programme features a half-day arts programme of your choice paired with a half-day of skating on The Natrel® Rink.

Toronto and Region Conservation Authority – Partnership ECO Day

June 2 Environmental education experiences in the heart of the city. ECO Day programming merges art and the environment to create a unique learning experience that showcases the natural wonders of the Toronto region through the lens of Harbourfront Centre art programmes. A joint event between Toronto and Region Conservation and Harbourfront Centre.

Outdoor Education May and June Enjoy the beautiful lakeside setting of Harbourfront Centre. Our outdoor education programme supports your students in connecting with Lake Ontario as you take part in our visual arts and urban studies activities. Your students can even take an hour-long boat tour around Lake Ontario.
