MY FAMILY FAVOURITES

Introducing The Award Winning Marketplace for Children’s Clothing, Gifts, Toys and Accessories When it comes to our kids, we all want to give them the best and new online marketplace Loubilou offers parents exactly that. The global emporium of unique, high quality children’s clothing, gifts, toys and accessories, features the very best independent sellers from around the world.

Chosen by a panel of experts (parents & grandparents), Loubilou was recently credited with My Family Magazine’s Family Favourite Award 2014 – Best New Online Marketplace. Editor Karen Reddell commented, “When it comes to the whole online experience, Loubilou really do stand out from the crowd. The site makes shopping online easy and fun; there are so many great products to choose from, browsing is a pleasure and the product descriptions allow customers to make informed choices. This retailer really understands their market. Watch this space . . . we predict great things for Loubilou!”

Loubilou is the brainchild of Heath Kane. The father of two, awardwinning designer and also a former creative director of Sapient, was frustrated by the limited choice of clothing available from high street retailers for his young children and found it a marathon hunt to find just the right sellers online. Realising there were few places where he and other parents could buy unique gear for their children and risking turning them into tiny clones, he and his business partner, Jordan Hammond, saw an opportunity to support independent merchants selling original children’s goods while also supporting parents and friends, who want to encourage their child’s individuality. The two aim to tap into the growing UK children’s clothing market which is currently worth £6.5 billion and expected to grow to nearly £7 billion in 2015 but which is dominated by fewer than 100 companies (according to

Loubilou offers a refreshing alternative to the usual selection of mass produced goods offered by conventional high street stores. Initially 2,000 thoughtfully made and rare items in categories such as Art/Creativity, Clothing and Furniture were added in just three months. With 4,000+ items today, the site is rapidly growing as merchants add new products daily. The site features an array of items to delight and inspire children and their grown-ups. Parents wanting to buy British for their children will find many of the sellers’ items proudly carry the ‘Made in Britain’ tag, with the number of featured products designed and produced in the UK growing fast. Ethical shoppers are sure to love the ‘Green Kids’ and ‘Handmade with Love’ categories, which include biodegradable bamboo toy race cars, handmade reversible dresses and cardboard circus wagons for children to build and decorate. If you are looking for a more personalised and more satisfying e-commerce experience, visit www.loubilou.com today.

a recent Key Note report). They aim to redirect some of the big 100 companies’ market share to boutique and small businesses, who previously had limited access and exposure. “We’ve created a platform to support the many independent small businesses that haven’t had the resources to compete until now,” explains Heath. “And we’re meeting the needs of independent-minded consumers who are looking for something special for their children.”

FAMILY WELLBEING

My Family and the Law:

Providing for your family in difficult times As My Family Magazine’s official media partner for legal topics, we aim to provide you with guidance as to your rights and your obligations under various laws. In this edition we meet Debbie Duggan and Patsy Woodford, both members within our specialist private client team. If your question is not listed, don’t worry, simply contact us and we will be happy to advise you.

What is a Will and who needs one? A Will is a legal document that sets out your wishes regarding the distribution of your estate and can also deal with the care of minor children. In essence, everyone over the age of 18 should make a Will. Making a Will is a necessary and fairly simple process that can save your family time, money and future complications.

Debbie Duggan

Patsy Woodford

Why shouldn’t I just buy a Willwriting pack and do it myself?

I already have a Will. Can you still help me?

We would always advise to consult a solicitor specialising in this area when looking to write your Will. A homemade will leaves your estate more vulnerable to claims being made as to the validity of the document. Our team has experienced situations where beneficiaries have lost a substantial inheritance because the Will was incorrectly drafted and executed. A solicitor is qualified, regulated and has a compensation system in place should the worst occur.

BakerLaw provides a free Will check to ensure that your Will is up-to-date and still reflects your requirements. You may have married and therefore potentially your Will is invalid. Also, you may now have children and should consider trustees and guardians.

How will having a Will benefit my family? By having a Will in place, you, as parents, are able to appoint trustees to hold your money and other assets in trust on behalf of your children until they reach a particular age. You can specify which age otherwise it will automatically be 18. You are also able to appoint guardians to look after your children and their welfare. You can make very specific provisions including education and upbringing. By not appointing guardians there is always a risk of lengthy court proceedings to determine who will care for your children in the long-term.

What is a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) and who needs one? An LPA is a document you make whilst you still have mental capacity to appoint attorneys to handle your affairs. The loss of mental capacity can occur as a result of many different causes such as, an accident or a medical condition and can therefore happen to anyone. In light of this, we advise anyone over the age of 18 to take out a LPA.

How will having an LPA in place benefit my family? If you or your partner are involved in an accident or suffer serious illness which leaves you unable to manage your finances, then an LPA can help ease some of the legal stress caused by the situation. In our experience, couples whom have found themselves in such a situation have encountered difficulty when accessing family finances to make mortgage, rent and other bill payments. However, an LPA can grant nominated persons access to your finances to ensure that matters are taken care of.

What happens if the person requiring an Attorney has already lost capacity? Can you still help? Yes. We can help you apply to the Court of Protection on behalf of a family member or in some cases we are appointed by the Court of Protection to handle an individual’s affairs.

If you require further advice please contact BakerLaw on 01252 733 770 for a free initial consultation. Please note: The information provided in this guide is correct at the time of publication and by necessity, brief. It should not be deemed, by any reader, as full legal advice and should not be relied upon.

WINTER WARMERS

Stay Safe and Warm this Winter Published by Public Health England (PHE) in collaboration with the Department of Health, NHS England and the Local Government Association (LGA), The Cold Weather Plan gives advice on preparation for the effects of winter weather on people’s health. On average there are 24,000 excess winter deaths per year in England, many of which are preventable. The Cold Weather Plan aims to prevent avoidable harm to health, by alerting people to the negative health effects of cold weather, and enabling them to prepare and respond appropriately. Keeping warm over the winter months can help prevent colds, flu or more serious health conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, pneumonia and depression.Cold homes have a significant impact on people’s health. One of the best ways of keeping yourself well during winter is to stay warm.

Here are a few tips for keeping warm and well this winter: l Keep warm by setting your heating to the right temperature (18 to 21°C). l Stay tuned to the weather forecast and plan ahead with supplies. l Get your heating system and cooking appliances checked regularly and keep your home well ventilated

8

myfamily

l Use your electric blanket as instructed and get it tested every three years. Never use a hot water bottle with an electric blanket

l Wear lots of thin layers – clothes made from cotton, wool or fleecy fibres are particularly good and maintain body heat

l Make sure you have a supply of heating oil or LPG or sold fuel if you are not on mains gas or electricity – to make sure you do not run out in winter

l Wear good-fitting slippers with a good grip indoors and shoes with a good grip outside to prevent trips, slips and falls

l Fit draught proofing to seal any gaps around windows and doors l Make sure you have loft insulation and that cavity walls are insulated too l Insulate your hot water cylinder and pipes l Draw your curtains at dusk to help keep heat generated inside your rooms l Make sure your radiators are not obstructed by furniture or curtains l Flu is a highly infectious illness that can spread rapidly. If you're at risk of complications from flu, you may be eligible for a free flu jab. l Food is a vital source of energy and helps to keep your body warm so have plenty of hot food and drinks l Stock up on tinned and frozen foods so you don’t have to go out too much when it’s cold or icy l Exercise is good for you all year round and it can keep you warm in winter

l Make sure you have spare medication in case you are unable to go out l Get financial support to make your home more energy efficient, improve your heating or help with bills. As in previous years, the Met Office will trigger cold weather alerts from 1 November 2013 to 31 March 2014, on the basis of either low temperatures of 2°C or less, or severe winter weather (heavy snow or widespread ice). Keep up with cold weather alerts by visiting www.metoffice.gov.uk/learning/getready-for-winter or follow #winterready and #weatheraware on Twitter for winter health advice.

Don’t forget the elderly Check on older neighbours or relatives to make sure they're safe and well. Make sure they're warm enough, especially at night, and have stocks of food and medicines so they don't need to go out during very cold weather. If you're worried about a relative or an elderly neighbour, contact your local council or ring the Age UK helpline on 0800 00 99 66. For your copy of The Cold Weather Plan visit

Tips for Green Parents There is no denying that having children is demanding on the environment, BUT even with the demands that a family makes on our planet, being green doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Here are a few steps that you can take to make family life greener – even if you only do a few of them it is a move in the right direction.

Support Fairtrade Smallholder farmers produce the majority of the world’s food, but they also make up half of the world’s hungriest people. This isn’t fair! By purchasing Fairtrade products, shoppers in the UK are ensuring that producer organisations receive a Fairtrade premium for investment in economic, social and environmental products of their own choice. These premiums can enable farmers to implement a range of environmental protection programmes which will contribute to the range of solutions needed to address climate change and ultimately benefit all of us. Bananas have been at the heart of Fairtrade for 13 years and in this time a huge amount has been achieved, with over 1.2 billion Fairtrade bananas now sold in the UK each year. But with still only 1 in 3 bananas in British shops sold as Fairtrade there is a long way to go. Fairtrade Fortnight 2014 (24 February 9 March) marks the launch of a special campaign that aims to transform the banana industry to ensure those at the sharp end of the supply chain, the millions of struggling banana farmers and workers, get a fair deal.

12 myfamily

It’s a campaign to ‘Make Bananas Fair’ and is the next part of the Fairtrade Foundations three year initiative to ‘Make Food Fair’. To find out how you can get involved visit www.fairtrade.org.uk.

Real Nappies Did you know your baby could use up to 6000 disposable nappies by the time they are potty trained? Real nappies can save you money and even using them part time will help reduce the 8 million disposables sent to landfill every day in Britain. For information visit The Real Nappy Information Service www.goreal.org.uk.

Hang Dry Make the most of dry days by giving your tumble drier a break. Get a clothesline or rack to dry your clothes by the air. Your wardrobe will maintain colour and fit, and you'll save money.

Pull the Plug In winter, throw on a sweater and turn down the thermostat. Unplug chargers for cellphones, TVs, DVD players, computers, and other major electronics when they're not in use rather than leaving them on standby.

Choose Organic

Recycling is an excellent way of saving energy and conserving the environment. Did you know that up to 60% of the rubbish that ends up in the dustbin could be recycled and the unreleased energy contained in the average dustbin each year could power a television for 5,000 hours?

Organic is good for you and your planet, is kind to animals and wildlife, and allows us to make a big difference – simply through the way we shop. With all these benefits, it’s easy to see why organic delivers such good value for money. By choosing organic, local and seasonal we can significantly reduce our carbon footprint. The UK Government’s own advisors found that plant, insect and bird life is up to 50% greater on organic farms.

Before you throw something away, think about if someone else might need it. Donate usable furniture and clothes to charity shops, schools, community centres, friends and neighbours. Find out more about recycling by visiting www.recyclingguide.org.uk

Organic farming relies on wildlife to help control natural pests, so wide field edges are left uncultivated for bugs, birds and bees to flourish. To find out how to make the right organic choices visit www.soilassociation.org.

INSPIRING YOUNG MINDS

Encouraging Reluctant Readers by Liz Walker, founder of Reading Chest With my background as a primary school teacher and the usual high hopes any parent has when their children start school, it was a bit of a shock when my own child struggled with learning to read. Some children learn to read effortlessly and love every step of the journey, whilst others find it really hard work and will dislike it. As a teacher, I had often told the parents of young reluctant readers: “Children learn to read at different times... don’t worry, it will come in the end ….” There does come a point however, when those children who don’t like reading do have to knuckle down and put in a bit more effort. With encouragement and support from parents and teachers, all children will eventually learn to read, although for some it will be more of an uphill climb. It is particularly important for reluctant readers to keep their love for stories and books alive by reading to them as much as possible. Listening to stories will help develop their vocabulary, inspire their imagination and improve their knowledge and understanding of the world. My recommendations to help reluctant readers are: n Get into a good routine and read as often as you can with your children. This might sound obvious, but once a routine is established, then reluctant readers are much less likely to protest. Reading for 10 minutes every day after breakfast will become just as normal as brushing teeth.

16 myfamily

n Keep reading a positive experience. Use lots of praise and if necessary reward incentives. Don’t make the idea of reading a chore or a punishment. n Don’t push children up reading levels too quickly just to keep up with peers. Children will gain confidence and are more likely to enjoy reading when they don’t have to struggle on too many words. Ideally children should be able to read at least 90% of the words on a page correctly without needing help. n Don’t force children to read a book page by page if they don’t like it or if it is too difficult. Help them out by sharing the reading. Don’t be afraid to put a book aside completely and let them choose another. n Read a play and act it out together. Bug Club have a great range of plays at different reading levels, such as ‘Rap-Punzel.’ n As children get older there are wider reading opportunities. Encourage children to get involved in a local youth theatre or school play. Learning lines is a great activity. n Read anything. Reading scheme books are particularly helpful in the earlier stages of learning to read. As children get older and gain confidence in their reading, find something that interests them. Try comics (or write your own here – www.comicmaster.org.uk), newspapers (try www.firstnews.co.uk), football magazines, or autobiographies of favourite stars. n Read more as a parent. Many of us will only read for a few minutes in bed before nodding off to sleep. Perhaps your children never see you reading a book. Try having a TV free

evening once a week where reading becomes the family activity. n Keep reading to your children for as long as possible. For many families, this seems to fall by the wayside as they get older.

“Ensuring that the enjoyment of literature takes precedence, particularly in the early years, over the learning of the rules literacy, important though they are. Children have to be motivated to want to learn to read. Reading must not be taught simply as a school exercise.” Michael Morpurgo, children’s author

The ultimate challenge for reluctant readers is for them to read for their own pleasure rather than to please their parents or teacher. It is up to us to help children develop the skills to read, but more importantly the desire to want to do it. For more reading advice and access to a wide range of books for young readers, visit

HOLIDAY & LEISURE

Enjoy Britain’s seasons The British countryside is a special place to visit whatever the time of year, thanks to the changing seasons. From winter in the snowy Scottish Highlands to summer on the sunkissed beaches of England’s south-west coast, spring in the lush mountains of Wales to autumn in the shady glens of Northern Ireland; the rhythm and beauty of nature is evident in this landscape. Spring – blossoms and bluebells By mid-March, hearts lift at the tell-tale signs that winter is over and the days begin to lengthen. A sure sign of spring is the explosion of pink and white blossom in Britain’s orchards, particularly on cherry, apple and pear trees. Follow a blossom trail through one of Britain’s horticultural hubs, such as the Vale of Evesham in England’s Midlands (www.blossomtrail.org.uk).

Winter – the festive season

Summer – nature walks and beachcombing

The shortest day arrives on 21 December and the coldest weather begins to bite. Birds braving the perishing temperatures can be more easily spotted in the bare branches of trees, including the red-breasted robin, a harbinger of the Christmas season.

Discussions about the weather in Britain reach a peak with the arrival of summer in mid-June, as the nation hopes for long, hot days. Nature is in full bloom, with bright-red poppies lighting up the lush green fields. Heaths and moors turn purple with heather – best seen on the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. By late July, people head to the seashore with buckets and spades for building sandcastles and kids’ fishing nets for scooping up creatures from rock pools for closer inspection. In Dartmouth, Monty Halls (a former soldier turned writer, broadcaster and marine biologist) offers outdoor adventures called Great Escapes, ideal for embracing the summertime. These fun experiences include guided shore walks, where the dramatic marine ecosystem is revealed (www.montyhalls.co.uk).

Autumn – changing colours and foraging

Another sign of spring are the thousands of delicate bluebells carpeting the floors of Britain’s ancient woodlands, creating a blue mist that sweetly scents the air. There are around 1,300 bluebell woods in Britain, many with paths through them to follow. Glen Finglas in Scotland, Coed Cefyn in Wales, and Carnmoney Hill in Northern Ireland, are recommended by the charity the Woodlands Trust (www.visitwoods.org.uk).

This is a time of arrival, too, as geese flee the Arctic wastes for these shores in their tens of thousands from September. Marvel at one of Britain’s largest displays of wildfowl, when 400,000 pink-footed geese swoop on the marshlands of RSPB Snettisham in north Norfolk (www.rspb.org.uk).

As the days shorten, consolation is found in the sheer beauty of nature as she prepares for winter. Low mists greet the morning and the sun burns golden red at sunset, while crisp starfilled skies cloak the night – admire the heavens in the Kielder Forest in Northumberland, officially the darkest place in England. Berries and fruits, nuts and mushrooms burst forth, making this an excellent moment to learn the art of foraging – try one of the sessions run by the Wild Food School in Lostwithiel, Cornwall (www.wildfoodschool.co.uk).

The green holly leaf with its bright red berries, as well as mistletoe and ivy, adorns the landscape and Christmas decorations are now on sale in the many festive markets that set up stall through December around the countryside. Catch a traditional winter fire festival, such as Up Helly Aa, when men dressed as Vikings bearing flaming torches process through the towns and villages of Scotland’s Shetland Islands, an hour and a half by air from Glasgow (www.uphellyaa.org). Embrace the snow and head for Scotland’s ski resorts, from a couple of hours’ drive north of Glasgow, where skiers and snowboarders are attracted by short lift queues and substantial dumps of the white stuff in December and January (ski.visitscotland.com).

Get in the Swim in 2014 As we’re now fully into the swing of 2014, here’s a few ways that swimming can make your New Year a happier and healthier one! New Year, New You Most of us start off the New Year with high hopes of toning up and trimming down, but we’re faced with the conundrum of how to go about it. Running, cycling, weight training; there’s a plethora of options, but how do we know what’s right for us. Well, did you know that swimming is one of the only exercises out there that gives you a full cardiovascular workout? Water is 800 times denser than air, so when it comes to a pool workout less is more! Training against resistance is scientifically proven to increase muscle strength and tone, and aids weight management. It has even been said to help you sleep better at night. Not only this but swimming provides a wonderfully meditative form of exercise, allowing you to de-stress and relax. When the human body is submerged in water, it insistently becomes lighter. This means that the pool provides an ideal place to work stiff muscles and sore joints, especially if you're overweight or suffer from arthritis. Better yet, rain, sleet or snow, your workout won’t get put on hold by our typical British

weather. You can head down to the pool any time to duck out of the cold or cool off from the summer heat. It’s the perfect all year round exercise – a sport for all seasons!

Stick to it with Swimfit However, we all know that sticking to our New Year’s resolutions is often an up-hill battle, especially if we’re attempting to go it alone without an instructor or a friend to spur you on. But why not break the trend this year and stick to it – with British Gas Swimfit! Swimfit is your very own motivational tool for the pool, which you can do any time or as part of a class with an instructor. Swimfit is all about getting results, whether that is to lose weight, to tone, to improve technique or just to become fitter and stronger. It is a fun and effective way to get in the shape you want. Experts at the Amateur Swimming Association have come up with specialised session plans to cater for beginners all the way up to former competitive swimmers, so all you have to think about is yourself and the water. There are specific Swimfit pools across the country which have special plastic laminated session cards on poolside for you and even trained Swimfit Activators who run Swimfit Activate+ sessions; they are designed for every standard of swimmer from 10 lengths to over 100.

Alternatively, go online and find the programmes there in downloadable format so you can access them anytime and add a bit of structure to your pool workouts. Getting into Swimfit is easy and simple, and a great way to make those New Year’s resolutions last. To find out more visit our website www.swimming.org/swimfit.

Get Savvy for Summer Swimming is a life-saving skill, so what better time than the New Year to get your children learning to swim if they haven’t yet enrolled in lessons. If they start lessons now, by the summer time when you are ready to go on holiday, they will be much more confident splashing around in the hotel pool or in the sea, and more importantly, safer! Recent research also suggests that people who are active as children are much more likely to be healthier as adults. So why not give your child the best head start in the pool and help promote their long-term health.

Want to find out more? The ASA are the experts in all things swimming and have lots more information and guidance on our website at swimming.org/go/parents/swimming-forparents. The award-winning SwimFin has been designed by a highly qualified UK swimming coach with over 30 yrs’ experience. It’s a vertical aid and suitable for children from 2 yrs+ of all abilities. SwimFin will never tip a child forwards or backwards and will never slip off. There is no need to inflate or deflate as it attaches with high quality velcro. Kids love SwimFin because the shark element appeals as a fun piece of kit and encourages them

into the water. It appeals to parents because it makes learning to swim more of a game than a chore. Tests have proved that it can reduce the process by up to a third less time. BABY & ME

La Leche League GB: offering breastfeeding information and support to all In previous years we have all heard the mantra “breast is best” however this is now being replaced with the phrase “breast is normal”. Breastmilk contains all the nutrients a baby needs and its unique structures cannot be replicated in formula. Breastmilk adapts to suit our own baby and if a baby is born prematurely it will adjust so that it is ideal for the continued growth that baby needs.

Breastfed babies are less likely to suffer from a range of conditions such as gastroenteritis, chest infections, eczema, asthma, celiac disease, crohn’s disease, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, meningitis, ear infections, diabetes in childhood, sudden infant death syndrome, childhood obesity, urinary tract infections, childhood leukaemia, and other cancers.

What are the benefits for Mum? Breastfeeding also reduces a mother’s risk of developing breast, ovarian, cervical and uterine cancer. It protects a mother against developing osteoporosis also reducing the risk of postnatal depression, helps the woman’s uterus to return to normal size after giving birth, and aids weight loss. Women who nurse their babies have a lower risk of developing diabetes.

When should baby feed? Offer the breast as soon after birth as possible. Breastfeeding is normal and natural, but it’s an art, that may take both mother and baby time and practice to learn, especially if a baby is sleepy or perhaps has a headache from a forceps delivery. It’s distressing when occasionally a baby refuses to breastfeed. However, many things can help with this, such as skin-to-skin contact and lying back with the baby on the mother’s body so that he/she uses innate instincts to help find the breast. It’s normal for a baby to bob at the breast and lick the nipple when preparing to latch on. Crying is one of the last cues that a baby gives to tells us that he needs to feed and watching for earlier cues such as stirring in sleep, rooting, and fist sucking can help to get the baby

latched on before he is upset. It is quite normal for a baby to want to nurse frequently and to expect a newborn to nurse at least 8 to 12 times in 24 hours.

Which is the best feeding position for baby? Getting a baby attached well at the breast is the key to comfortable breastfeeding. Find a comfortable position where you feel wellsupported sitting, reclining, or lying down. Use pillows for your own comfort to support your head, shoulders, body, arms and legs, but not under the baby. Baby should be positioned “nose to nipple” so ensure he can tilt his head back and extend his neck. He can then take a big enough mouthful of breast (not just the nipple) and swallow easily. His body should not be twisted; his ear, shoulder and hip should be in alignment. If you need to support your breast keep your fingers well away from the areola and keep the breast at its natural level. Bring baby to the breast and lightly stroke his mouth with your breast until he opens wide like a yawn, then roll the underside of your breast into his mouth and onto his tongue. This pushes the lower jaw open wider. Your nipple is the last part of the breast to enter his mouth and when it reaches the back of the mouth it triggers active sucking. Keep his body tucked in close. Once he is attached you can make small adjustments to how he is positioned to maximise your own comfort and gently tuck his body in close if necessary.

Where can mum get help and support with breastfeeding? Breastfeeding is not always easy at first and that is why nine out of ten women who wanted to breastfeed stop in the first six weeks. Getting the right information and support in the early days can make a lot of difference and going along to breastfeeding support meetings, such as those held by La Leche League, before the baby is born helps prepare for challenges which may arise. For more information call La Leche League’s national telephone helpline 0845 120 2918 or visit www.laleche.org.uk Written by Anna Burbidge on behalf of La Leche League

MY FAMILY ONLINE

Photo Sharing Across Generations In our digital world, we share more and more content online. However for many family members, online photo and video sharing can still feel like a relatively new and slightly daunting concept. So if you want to share your recent snaps, it’s all about knowing your audience. We’ve matched some imaginary family members with the online (or offline) method of sharing memories that can put a smile on the face of even your least-techy relatives.

Grandma Sue – Florida Self-taught computer junkie who helps other grandparents check their email. Sue’s the one teaching the other grannies where the ‘On’ button is. She’d love to see your photos on a dedicated photography service like Flickr. She can access the photo stream from her computer and the high quality, full screen images help her enjoy every moment. Flickr is also a great way to store your photos online, giving you tons of organisational tools. Grandma Sue might also like using Dropbox, where you can save and share your individual photo albums, which Grandma will be able to see on her desktop. Both services charge a small fee after you exceed the free data limit, but offer a great way to back up your photos, share content with family far away and acknowledge Gran as the IT guru she is.

Aunt Clare – Glasgow Absolute technophobe, runs screaming from the room at the slightest hint of technology and never wants to see or touch an iPhone … ever.

If all you want is to share photos, then there’s no need to force a technophobe to get online. There are numerous services that allow you to order prints of your digital photos that can be posted to your Aunt simply, easily, and for a great price. It’s lovely to have a tangible copy of the photos you love so while you’re ordering copies to be sent to family members, you might order a few for yourself! Check out services like Postagram, 23snaps, Shutterfly and Snapfish all of which allow you to order prints for yourself or your family.

Cousin Tim – Sussex Has an account on just about every social media site there is. He’s so connected he knows what’s going on with you before you do. When a family member is this connected, you can pretty much share your photos anywhere and they will find them. While you can always use Facebook or Instagram to share your photos, you may want to explore some of the other networks Tim is using for his photos to see if you like them better – like Pinterest, Tumblr, or even MyHeritage, that genealogy site he tried to get everyone to sign up for a few years ago.

Article written by:

Sister Sarah – Thailand While she’s backpacking around on her gap year she’s at the mercy of free wifi availability. When you post photos to Google+, they are automatically curated to pull the best quality photos and put them front and centre. You then have the option of sharing these photos with individuals, a “circle” of friends and/or family, or with the public. This would be a fantastic way to share photos with your sister, who may have limited time to check your updates but still doesn’t want to miss out. When she does have the opportunity to log in, your best photos will be highlighted.

Dad Bill – London Self-taught tech user, fairly confident but still a bit uncomfortable thinking about all of the strangers on the internet. Dad loves seeing your photos, especially of the new baby. But he doesn’t love the idea that strangers on the internet can see the photos too. Get Dad, and the rest of the family on 23snaps. This private social network for families makes it easy to privately save and share photos, videos and updates of your little ones and is designed to connect with every person in the family. Dad can view the updates from the free 23snaps app, Grandma sees them online, Sarah gets the photos via email and Clare of course waits for the photo prints to show up in her mailbox. Whether you’re glued to your iPhone or computer, or you’re happier leafing through a photo album, there are numerous ways to share photos with every generation, it’s just a case of finding the right ones for everyone involved.

CHILD SAFETY

Preventing Injury from Serious Falls Every day, 45 children under five are admitted to hospital following a serious fall. Stumbles and trips are to be expected. In our opinion, they’re not preventable accidents. Well, not preventable in a way that’s conducive to bringing up a healthy, happy, well-rounded child!. We’re talking about serious falls: a toddler falling from an open window; a new-born infant falling head-first from a bed; a crawling baby falling down a flight of stairs. Because they can result in head injuries, serious falls are one of the most traumatic and devastating accidents a baby or child can have. In a worst case scenario, a child can suffer from learning disabilities and personality changes. The consequences can last for a lifetime and affect the whole family.

Windows and balconies Toddlers and young children can and, too often, do fall out of windows or from balconies and suffer serious injuries. In fact, one child under five is admitted to hospital every day after falling from a building. As soon as they’ve learnt to walk, toddlers will start to climb and explore – it’s a key part of their physical development. They are getting stronger and more agile, starting to learn about the world and become inquisitive, which is great! However, it won’t come as any surprise to hear that most falls happen because parents are unaware of their child’s newly-acquired abilities. Obviously, you can’t supervise them 100% of the time, but with a few simple adjustments to the home, serious falls from windows are easily preventable: l Fit safety catches, locks or window restrictors to windows. l Keep keys to window locks in a place where you can easily find them, in case you need to escape from a fire. l Keep furniture like beds and sofas away from windows to prevent children from climbing and reaching windows. l Make sure there’s nothing else near a window – like a toy box – that young children can use as a step.

32 myfamily

l In homes with balconies, keep young children away from the balcony unless they are supervised and to keep balcony doors locked when not in use.

Babies – they’re not mobile yet so no worries, right? Wrong. Cases where babies fall from a bed or changing table and sustain head injuries are not uncommon, even though they’re only a couple of feet off the ground. Even very young babies can wriggle and the soft spot in their skull – the fontanelle - means they’re at greater risk of a serious head injury if they fall. This soft spot closes at different times, but generally takes a couple of months to fully close and protect the baby’s brain. So we advise parents and carers to: l Change their baby’s nappy on the floor – it’s the safest place. l Keep bouncing chairs and car seats on the floor. Don’t put them on a table or work surface, as the seat can move when the baby wriggles. l Never leave their baby unattended on a bed or a changing table.

Crawling babies, toddlers and the challenge of the stairs Crawling and walking – two key milestones in a baby’s development. Once they start moving, they are unsteady and all children will experience bumps and stumbles. Minor injuries are to be expected!

What’s important is helping parents and carers to recognise what can pose a serious threat to their baby or toddler’s safety. And falls down stairs are one of the most common serious accidents to befall crawling babies and toddlers. Over 40 under fives a week are admitted to hospital after falling down stairs. Crawlers and toddlers have a natural instinct to explore as far as they can – and the stairs present a wonderful challenge! – but they have no concept of danger. They may start to climb the stairs and fall back or crawl to the top of the stairs and fall down. A physical barrier is essential to keep them out of danger. So we advise parents and carers to fit safety catches, locks or window restrictors to windows.

Falls from highchairs A fall from a highchair can also cause serious head injury – often the highchair is in the kitchen, on a hard floor. Children make rapid breakthroughs in their development and accidents can happen in a split second. It’s very easy for parents to be caught by surprise when a child first pushes themselves up out of a highchair. So the message to parents is build safety into everyday routines – get into the habit of strapping your child into their highchair every time.

Falls from bikes The chance of a child suffering a serious head injury is much lower if they are wearing a cycle helmet when they come off a bike. So CAPT’s advice is clear: that children wear a properlyfitted helmet at all times when they’re on their own bike, in a seat on an adult bike, on a tag-along or in a trailer, regardless of whether they’re on the road or a trail, or in a park. We also advise that parents and carers wear cycle helmets to set a good example, and to help get their child into the habit of wearing one.

CHILD SAFETY

The Yellow Card Scheme: Making medicines safer for children A headache, the common cold, a cough – medicines are effectively taken for many common health complaints by millions of people every year without problems. But have you or your child suffered a side-effect to a medicine? All medicines can cause unwanted side-effects that cannot be anticipated or predicted. The likelihood is that you will discuss these sideeffects with a doctor or other healthcare professional. Recent research undertaken on behalf of the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) shows that 59% of parents have self-medicated their child, that 75% of parents would ask their GP for advice if their children had suffered a sideeffect and that just 11% of parents have heard of and know what the Yellow Card Scheme is. So what is the Yellow Card Scheme? The Yellow Card Scheme is a voluntary reporting scheme run by the UK’s medicines and medical devices watchdog, the MHRA. It receives reports on side-effects from healthcare professionals and patients for medicines and vaccines. It was formed following the Thalidomide tragedy in 1964 and is an integral part of ensuring that the benefits and risks of a medicine are assessed and new safety trends with medicines can be identified. In children’s medicines alone it has recently been responsible for increased

warnings about potential skin reactions in children with eczema using aqueous cream and has led to reviews into liquid codeine and overthe-counter cough and cold medicines for children.

Why should parents report? Reports from the public, including parents, as well as those from healthcare professionals, can give a more complete insight into the way drugs effect patients. The MHRA uses information from Yellow Cards alongside other scientific information to effectively monitor the safety of medicines ensuring they can be used safely by everyone, including your child. The Yellow Card Scheme gives you a voice; your GP may or may not report your side-effect, doing so directly through the Scheme means that you know your experience will be heard and that it will contribute to greater knowledge of the safety profile of that medicine.

Why is it important to report side-effects for children? Before a medicine is approved for use in adults, it must undergo extensive testing and clinical trials to ensure that it is safe and effective. It is more challenging to test medicines in children as they are a vulnerable group with developmental, physiological and psychological differences from adults, which makes research into medicines for children particularly important.

Children react differently to medicines from adults and their bodies may handle a medicine differently. For example, the liver and kidneys in a child have not fully developed and that can affect how the body removes a medicine. Reporting to the Yellow Card Scheme helps to provide important information about the sideeffects and the overall safety of medicines and is considered when the benefits of medicines are balanced against the possible risks from treatment.

A call to parents and carers The MHRA is running a campaign to encourage parents and carers to report any symptom they think may be a medicine side-effect their child is experiencing to the Yellow Card Scheme. If you think that you, your child, or someone you care for is experiencing or has experienced a side-effect to a medicine or vaccine, you should: 1 Read the patient information leaflet supplied within the packaging of the medicine. This lists the known side effects and advises you what to do. 2 Speak to a healthcare professional; such as a doctor, pharmacist or nurse 3 Report the side-effect to the Yellow Card Scheme It is important to know that the MHRA cannot provide medical advice in individual cases and if you are concerned about a side effect, you should consult a doctor or pharmacist for advice. However the MHRA will use this information to review the safety of this particular medicine.

How to report It is easiest and quickest to report online at www.mhra.gov.uk/yellowcard. You can also get Yellow Card forms by: n emailing yellowcard@mhra.gsi.gov.uk n downloading printable forms from the Yellow Card website n by telephoning: 0808 100 3352 (10am 2pm, Monday-Friday only)

Think you don’t have business skills? Think again! Are you thinking of starting your own business this year but fighting your own selfdoubt? From time to time we all have those voices in our heads telling us that we’re not good enough, or that we just don’t have what it takes to succeed. This can be a big problem for mums in particular, because our business role models are mostly wealthy, extrovert and male. It feels like there’s a huge gap between the dragons in the BBC’s Dragon’s Den and our everyday experience of feeding the kids and getting them to school on time. But believe me, you have a lot to offer. Here are just a few examples of the valuable skills you’ve picked up as a mum:

Negotiation If you’ve ever tried to convince a screaming two-year-old back into a pushchair or a three year-old that they don’t want chocolate for every meal, then believe me you have excellent negotiation skills!

Networking Mums are fantastic networkers. I’m always amazed by how a group of mums can connect with and motivate many others to raise money for charity, get all hands on deck for a school event or help out another family that is having a tough time.

Event Planning Birthday parties, weddings, school events and fundraisers. There’s always an event in the diary if you’re a mum. And most of us are great at organising them, often with limited time and resources.

Patience True, you may not feel like the most calm and serene person in the world when faced with the prospect of removing glitter glue from your carpet. But motherhood definitely teaches you that you can’t have everything precisely when you want it. Sometimes you have to get to work then wait a while before you see success.

Getting things done Since I became a mum I’ve dropped my standards. And that’s a good thing! My

inner perfectionist used to stop me from tackling some projects because the time wasn’t right or I needed to take yet another course first. Dealing with the chaos that comes with small children has shown me my timing will never be just right, I will never be organised enough and I will never know everything I think I need to know. These days I just get on with it. Maybe you’re the same? Better to finish an imperfect project than to never start a perfect one.

Taken time out of your career? Don’t overlook all the skills and experience you gained in your LBK (life before kids). It may seem like you’ve forgotten it all, but with a little practice it all comes back. You may not want to go back to the career you had before, but there will definitely be skills you can adapt and use. If you take some time to think about what you’ve learned from being a mum, I guarantee you’ll have a goldmine of skills and experience you can use in your new business.

A Global Celebration of Women Every year on the 8th March, the world celebrates International Women’s Day, recognising and applauding women’s achievements as well as observing and highlighting gender inequalities and issues.

Women's organisations and governments around the world observe International Women’s Day by holding large-scale events that honour women's advancement, while diligently reminding of the continued vigilance and action required to ensure that women's equality is gained and maintained in all aspects of life. With more women in the boardroom, greater equality in legislative rights, and an increased critical mass of women's visibility as impressive role models, one could think that women have gained true equality. The unfortunate fact is that women are still not paid equally to that of their male counterparts, women still are not present in equal numbers in business or politics, and globally women's education, health and the violence against them is worse than that of men. However, great improvements have been made. We do have female astronauts and prime ministers, girls are welcomed into university, women can work and have a family, and women have real choices. Therefore, the tone and nature of IWD has moved from being a reminder about the

Babycademy Founder, Bernice Hewson I have always thought that one day I’ll run my own business. On maternity leave I enjoyed the break from work and the opportunity to focus all of my attention on my wonderful young son. One thing I hadn’t appreciated when becoming a parent was the importance of keeping precious playtime interesting and fun. I also wanted to make sure I was doing all I could to support his development.

I looked around the shops, searched the Internet, and I couldn’t find anything that would help me in my quest for quality playtime with him. They say necessity is the mother of invention, so I began developing a

product myself – and the Babycademy idea was born. My aim was to offer parents a box of fun you could enjoy in the home, providing you with everything you need to both entertain and support your baby’s development needs at every age and stage. I ran focus groups across London to test the concept and with overwhelmingly positive feedback I never looked back. Keen to team up with a child development expert I contacted Dr. Todd. She was

equally passionate and enthused by the idea and now 12 months on I have launched Babycademy. Making the right contacts, asking the right questions and having steadfast belief in the idea have been critical. I am now furiously working on launching our second product. My mission remains the same – to make it easy for parents to enjoy quality interactive playtime with their baby.

Pampered Chef: Sue Caldwell’s Story I joined The Pampered Chef in 2000 as a shy stay at home Mum. My husband had been made redundant, we had two young daughters and a large mortgage and I had to go back to work.

It wasn't something I really wanted to consider at that time and it was challenging with a lack of confidence and desire to still be at home with the girls. So, a friend of mine invited me to take a look at The Pampered Chef. At first I was reluctant, but plucked up the courage to make a very small investment in a kit. My attitude was such that, if it didn't work, I hadn't lost anything. I started out by doing my first Cooking Shows to friends and it escalated with ease and I found that I was enjoying myself. I found a new me! I loved the shows more and more as my confidence grew and still do after 14 years with the wonderful company. The Pampered Chef has given me confidence, direction, flexibility, a challenge and an opportunity to develop a business. I have achieved it through a love of the business and heartfelt passion, not a business degree! I now lead a huge team, have a multi-million pound turnover and a six figure income. I have

HOMES & INTERIORS

I am Caitlin, founder of Cherish & Cherubs, gifts and interiors for little ones. I’m a mum to a four year old boy and I’ve always leaned towards interiors with a yester-year feel.

Bedding – Roald Dahl The Enormous Crocodile Duvet Cover and Pillowcase Set (£30) www.johnlewis.com

Decorating a boys room and avoiding it being too ‘twee’ isn’t as hard as you might think. The key to getting the vintage feel to a room is not to rush it. Your child won’t take too much notice when they are very young as long as his bed is warm and his favourite toys are close by, the rest is more for our enjoyment! So think of it as a labour of love; enjoy picking out quirky pieces and finding the fabric, wallpaper, bedding and accessories that suit your taste and reflect your child’s personality. You will be guaranteed to have a unique room that captures your child’s personality (and doesn’t jar with your taste, but he doesn’t have to know that). Here are my top picks for boys bedrooms:

Books – Independent bookshops are a great place to browse and allow your child to choose their own. Try your local bookstore rather than Amazon – children love filling a bookshelf with their favourite bedtime stories. Join us for the return of

Autism’s GOT TALENT!

2014

Autism charity, Anna Kennedy Online would like to invite you to join us for ‘Autism’s Got Talent 2014’ on Saturday 10th May at the Mermaid Theatre, London. performers who will not only be participating as soloists but also be coming together to perform in a group – something we are often told is too difficult for people with Autism to do!

Now in its third year, the show which is co-produced by Pineapple Performing Arts School promises to be a great event as it brings together a diverse group of people, who are all on the Autistic Spectrum, to show everyone just how talented they are. All too often people make the mistake of thinking that anyone with a disability is capable of very little . . . HOLD THE PRESS . . . Autism’s Got Talent will be showing everyone just what all these great people really are capable of and just how good they are at it!! Talent comes in many forms so, as you would expect, the show covers many different genres ranging from performers with instruments to singers and dancers. We have some great

Talent stretches way beyond the field of performance – so on the night we will also be hearing from, and championing, people that have done other amazing things. This night will surely open the eyes of those who previously didn’t realise just what someone on the Autistic Spectrum can achieve. This is not just a night to celebrate a small section of people, but a celebration of EVERYONE that is on the Spectrum.

As ever, in a bid to keep reaching out far and wide, we have performers that are coming to us

from right across the country and even across the ocean from Canada, Australia and New Zealand! You can look forward to an outstanding performance by dancers from Pineapple Performing Arts School. The award winning school, based at the famous Pineapple Studios in Covent Garden, has been working with the charity Anna Kennedy Online to produce Autism’s Got Talent since 2011. We have a great team putting this evening together and there

have even been rumours of a red carpet and possibly a few wellknown faces . . .we could tell you more but surely it’s better to come and see for yourselves! Everyone Is welcome – this will be a very understanding and Autism Aware Audience. We really do want this to be a mixed audience of those on the spectrum and those that aren’t. Tickets cost £15 for adults and £10 for children and are available now by calling 01895 619734 or email lisa.robins@thevines.org.uk

AUTISM NEWS

The Results Are In for Anna Kennedy Online Autism Diagnosis Survey During November 2013, two thousand people with an autism diagnosis and parent or carer of someone who has a diagnosis completed the Autism Diagnosis Survey in the UK. The survey, which was carried out by volunteers for Anna Kennedy Online – a growing UK charity which advocates for people affected by autism spectrum conditions, was largest of its kind involving people who have an autism spectrum condition. Questions were asked about the diagnostic process which ranged from when the condition was first suspected to when the diagnostic process was initiated, and how long it took before it was completed. Other questions addressed the challenges for individuals and families associated with the assessment and the ability of the professionals involved to embrace a constructive, multidisciplinary approach. Participants were also asked to comment on the quality of support they received during the assessment.

Having suspected the existence of an autism spectrum condition, at what age did the diagnostic process start? n 59% of cases the child concerned was under the age of 5 n 30% of cases the child concerned was aged between 5 and 10 n 9% of cases the person concerned was aged between 11 and 20 n 2% of cases concerned adults aged between 21 and 50

Anna Kennedy Online decided to carry out this work after listening numerous people and families affected either directly or indirectly by the condition, who had contacted the charity either in person or through social media. What came across was their frustration due to the depressing length of time the whole process was taking, even though the books and information they were reading spoke about how important early intervention is for children on the autism spectrum. The results obtained from the survey: In 58% of cases, it was the parents who first suspected or had concerns that their child may be on the autism spectrum, due to their child’s behaviour or development; clearly illustrating the importance of listening to parents.

Of the people who were given the diagnosis Anna delivering the results of the survey at the House of Commons In relation to the person/ child who was suspected may have an autism spectrum, what was their age? n 76% of cases involved a child under 5 n 16% of cases involved a child aged between 5 and 10 n 4% of cases involved someone aged between 11 and 20 n 4% of cases involved adults aged between 21 and 50

n 38% were children under the age of 5 n 39% were children aged between 5 and 10 years old n 12% were aged between 11 and 20 years old n 11% were adults aged between 21 and 50 The survey showed n 91% of families were given the diagnosis through the NHS, 9% privately. n 63% of families stated the process was poor to average.

AUTISM NEWS

Anna Kennedy OBE awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Teesside University The last 12 months have proved to be another triumphant year for Tesco Mum of the Year, Anna Kennedy OBE. n 54% of the participants found the process difficult. n 71% of participants shared that it was not easy to find vital information as to how to obtain a diagnosis nor in many cases was it explained where a diagnosis could be obtained. With regard to the professionals involved, 55% were assessed as being between average to poor when it came to working together with others for the benefit of the child or adult concerned. The disparity, particularly between highlighting the possible existence of the condition to relevant individuals in children under 5 and when a diagnosis was obtained highlights perhaps the main cause for concern. Over 50% of the families waited up to 5 years or more for diagnosis from when the condition was first suspected. The results of the survey clearly demonstrate that the process in place for diagnosing children and young adults is not fit for purpose and requires immediate improvement. Parents who manage to negotiate the energy sapping bureaucracy often find that the service provided is disconnected and in many cases is of unacceptable quality. Concerns have been raised in the past however nothing or very little seems to happen. Anna Kennedy Online is now challenging the Government to sort this out and let parents know when this will be done. The time to act is now!

Autism Diagnostic Tool: Which one do we use? At this time the action of diagnosing ‘Autism’ is lacking any direction. For too many years now people have been trying to make a big issue fit a box that it never will. There is a want to classify and make the Autistic Spectrum something smaller and more defined than it actually is; in doing that we now have too many cases of people not receiving a diagnosis or having to wait for years of medical in-fighting around them to gain one. Even down to the very basics of which diagnostic tool is used is not clear. On the one hand the NHS sets out that ICD-10 IS the diagnostic tool recognised and used. On the other hand professionals WITHIN the NHS state they diagnosing to what the DSM-V states and often misunderstanding what is within it. Instead of giving an ASD diagnosis, as was meant to happen, we now have evidence of families being told ‘ah we would have given you a diagnosis before but under DSM-V ‘Aspergers’ no longer exists and as your child’s symptoms meet with what we view as Aspergers we can no longer diagnose’.

At the end of a productive 2013, the renowned autism campaigner was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Professional Studies from Teesside University, her home town. Anna received the award at a special event held by the university where she spoke to students and then attended a celebratory dinner at the the Riverside Club, home of Middlesbrough football club.

Step in the Right Direction Autism Dance Day Anna Kennedy Online would like to invite you to dance for Autism on Friday 25th April 2014. Step in the Right Direction Autism Dance Day brings together large numbers of special needs and mainstream schools to organise dance events to raise funds for Autism. We all know the positive benefits of dance for those with Autism and this has been demonstrated in the DVD Step in the Right Direction. So we thought we would take one step further and ask you to join in a nationwide

dance festival to raise funds for Autism. It’s easy to organise – someone brings the music and the invitees provide the moves – and if we all get behind the occasion we think it will really capture the imagination of children with Autism, their parents, carers, friends and family. Anyone can join in this fun event to raise money for this great cause – to register email lisa.robins@thevines.org.uk

Unless all health professionals FULLY understand the ‘Big Picture’ that Autism is and the full scope of the Spectrum and are given a ONE go to point to diagnose from this system is always going to fail.

AUTISM NEWS

Anna Kennedy Online – Best Autism Support Resource AKO Started life as an online resource for people on the spectrum, their families and carers – a place for the autism community to find out about news stories, legal news, research and events, as well as providing a place to connect with autism campaigner Anna Kennedy and the AKO team. Over the last five years AKO has gone from strength to strength, giving support to thousands of people who face the everyday challenge that living with autism brings. In fact the hardworking team behind the charity does so much good work that we have chosen them to receive My Family Magazine’s award for ‘Best Autism Support Resource’.

To raise awareness of autism and to raise funds for the charity, each year they take to the stage for Autism’s Got Talent and Wear It for Autism; but behind the scenes at AKO it’s not all singing and dancing.

The AKO team are passionate about promoting the inclusion and equality of children and adults with autism, and their family. The website is still at the heart of the good work that the charity does but it is the amazing team behind it that make everything happen.

The charity now has dedicated Training Services for parents, teachers, social workers and ANYONE that comes into contact with someone on the Spectrum. AKO training sessions are about sharing information and changing the way people think about and perceive autism.

With the AMAZING funding that the charity have received from supporters such as West Ham United, they have launched a Helpline – 07710 597457 (Mon - Fri, 9:30am – 16:00) to answer all autism related questions and offer support. This is quite often a gateway which leads to the introduction of their other services parent/support group visits, conferences, school talks and legal advice on SEN and social care.

AUTISM NEWS

An Insight into Angelo Kennedy’s First Term at West London Community College West London Community College (WLCC) is a wellestablished specialist provision for adults (aged 16+) with autism spectrum conditions including Asperger syndrome. The College, which is part of the Hillcrest family, is committed to empowering students to access opportunities that maximise their potential and achieve as fulfilled, meaningful and independent a life as possible.

What were Angelo’s targets for his first term at WLCC? Firstly we wanted to achieve a positive transfer for Angelo from Hillingdon Manor School. We use a fluid, person centred approach to work with Angelo, which is suited to his individual needs. Initially we are working with Angelo in the following ways n We are encouraging him to interact with the staff and students at WLCC.

Angelo with his mum, Anna Kennedy

What progress has Angelo made since attending WLCC? Angelo has settled in well at WLCC. He interacts with other students and his vocabulary has increased; with a little prompting he now uses a few words to communicate his needs. He has also learned to use the iPad to watch his favourite ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’ on YouTube.

We caught up with Senior Vocational Training Officers, Alarbi Dauki and Aimee Urquhart, who have been working with new student, 20-yearold Angelo Kennedy since he joined the college in September 2013. Angelo was diagnosed with severe autism as a child. He is non-verbal, has sensory sensitivity to loud unexpected noises and difficulty with proprioception (the unconscious perception of movement and spatial orientation controlled by nerves within his body). With the permission of Angelo’s mum (Autism Campaigner, Anna Kennedy OBE), Alarbi told My Family Magazine how Angelo is getting on since joining the college last term.

Angelo with his mum, Anna and brother, Patrick on the catwalk at Wear it for Autism

n Due to his difficulty with proprioception, Angelo has a limited attention time and difficulties sensing his own body; we are working with him to increase the length of time that Angelo can settle, as well as helping him with movement and spatial awareness. n Expanding Angelo’s vocabulary and prompting him to use a few new words. n We are supporting Angelo to cope with sensory sensitivity in a variety of environments outside of college.

Which sessions does Angelo attend? n He goes swimming each week. Initially Angelo was scared of the water but his confidence has grown and being in the pool now helps him to relax. n Angelo goes on regular visits to Heathrow Special Needs Farm – he loves visiting the animals. n We take Angelo and fellow students out into the local community, for walks in the park and to the café, where Angelo enjoys sitting down to a portion of his favourite lunch – sausage and chips.

A week before the first models stepped out at London Fashion Week, Angelo joined his Mum Anna and Brother Patrick on the catwalk at ‘Wear it for Autism’; a fashion event that raises awareness of people with autism and their families. Travelling to the event was also a challenge for Angelo who took the tube with Senior Vocational Training Officer, Alarbi. He coped well with the crowds and the noise, and made it to the events in time to pause for a photo opportunity on the red carpet before the start of the show.

What is the long-term target for Angelo? We will continue working with a person centred approach for Angelo to increase his independence both inside and outside of college. Long-term, the aim is also to develop Angelo’s Literacy and to maximise his potential in develop skills in every area of his life. If you would like further information about West London Community College, funding or admissions visit www.autismconsultants.org or call 01895 619700.

n Angelo receives Speech and Language Therapy and input from an Occupational Therapist to assist with his sensory difficulties.
