Battling sleepless nights? This information could help you! by Vicki Dawson Founder of The Children's Sleep Charity Getting a good night’s sleep is vital for children’s wellbeing (as well as their parent’s!). Vicki Dawson set up ‘The Children’s Sleep Charity’, the only charity specifically focusing on sleep issues for youngsters in the UK. Vicki was once a sleep deprived mum and found it difficult to get any support to help to improve things with her son’s sleep issues. Vicki says, “Sleep deprivation is a form of torture. Trying to function on half the amount of sleep that your body needs is incredibly hard and can lead families into crisis. Unfortunately the impact that exhaustion has on our minds and bodies is not yet fully acknowledged in this country. I set up the charity to offer support to other families and to help to raise awareness about the importance of sleep”. Practitioners from the charity, or sleep fairies as they prefer to be called, use a range of cognitive behavioural techniques to support children to get a better night’s sleep. The methods used are all gentle and are based on the most up to date research. The charity work in partnership with sleep medical experts and now deliver an accredited course to train others to carry out this important work. If you are having difficulties with your child’s sleep then you are not alone. Research suggests that up to 40% of children will have a sleep issue at some time. This statistic rises to as many as 86% of children with additional needs having

sleep difficulties. Vicki co-wrote the book ‘Sleep and Your Special Needs Child’ with Antonia Chitty to offer families further support. Vicki says, “Having a child with sleep issues can make you feeling quite isolated. We work with many families who say that they thought they were the only ones going through this. Sometimes they are worried about asking for help for fear of their parenting skills being questioned. Many parents attend our sleep workshops and are relieved to meet others in a similar situation. “
Did you know that sleep deprivation can impact on: Memory • Weight • Hormone production Mood • Mental health • Your immune system Children’s growth • Learning • Concentration A good routine is important to help children to develop better sleep habits. You must be consistent when you implement a new routine, your child’s sleep patterns may appear to become worse before they get better as they may try to resist new changes that you make. Parents often give up when implementing a routine as they feel that it isn’t working, you need to give any changes at least 2 weeks in order to see results.
Here are our top tips for developing a good bedtime routine: l Do the same thing at the same time each day, including waking your child at the same time each morning; this will strengthen their body clock. Yes we know this is hard on a Saturday and Sunday, but it is also very important!
l Switch off computers and televisions an hour before bedtime, these can be very stimulating activities and can hinder a good night’s sleep. l Fine motor skill activities help children to relax, encourage them to take part in these before bedtime. Colouring in, jigsaws, threading activities all help to promote relaxation. You will need to plan appropriate relaxing activities in advance. l If your child enjoys being bathed then you should include this within your routine. A bath 30 minutes before bed is perfect for aiding sleep. The decrease in body temperature after getting out of a bath makes us feel sleepy around half an hour later. l Give your child warnings that bedtime is approaching; you may use a visual timetable to show them what is going to happen next. l Use calming music as part of your bedtime routine to help your child to begin to wind down. l Say goodnight and leave your child to fall asleep by themselves if possible. l Do not leave your child watching television or listening to CDs if they have sleep issues, they must learn to fall asleep by themselves at the start of the night so that they can then resettle themselves to sleep should they wake up during the night. l Write down the routine so that everybody involved knows what the procedure is. Safe Sleep for Baby as Temperatures Rise Ensuring your baby has a safe sleep is a top priority for parents. So as the seasons change and the weather gets warmer, you may wonder how the rising temperatures will affect your baby’s sleep. Light bedding such as sheets or a low-tog sleep bag will help you keep your baby cooler, and you can then build up layers if needed. The Lullaby Trust’s Safer Sleep guidance includes more information to help reduce the chance of SIDS, with the key advice that parents place their baby on their back for every sleep, in a clear cot or Moses basket, with their feet to the foot of the bed. Tackle The Wistow Maze This Summer With England hosting this year’s Rugby World Cup, Leicestershire’s famous Wistow Maze is joining in the fun. “Looking down to find that your baby has fallen asleep on your chest… that’s peace.” When the owner of AmaWrap, Shabs, first had her daughter she realised that the “bond” that she heard so much about was not there, due to her difficult pregnancy and birth. But what I found is that when I looked down to find that my baby had fallen asleep on my chest, I felt the most incredible sense of peace. And, funnily, it finally made me feel like a mother. Like I was doing something that felt so natural.”
“But what benefits are there for the baby?” We hear you say! Lying on mum’s chest reminds baby of the sounds and feelings that they were used to in the womb. Feeling your voice, breathing and heartbeat has been proven to quieten and calm a baby. This holds even more true for preterm babies – studies have shown that wearing premature babies in a sling (or however you choose to initiate that skin-to-skin contact) helps to regulate their breathing and their temperature more quickly. And when you hold baby that close, you become more attuned to their behaviours and expressions, which means that you can pick up their cues before they resort to crying. What other benefits are there to having your child in a wrap? Less colic and reflux for a start. Keeping your child upright in a sling aids digestion, helps to avoid that painful regurgitation, and also serves as a gentle massage to baby’s stomach. Teaching Children to Read – the Job of Teachers or Parents? by Liz Walker, founder of Reading Chest Parents often question how often their children are heard read by their teacher. This varies dramatically between schools, with some teachers managing to hear every child in the class read individually a few times a week, whereas other teachers might only hear individual readers once every few months. In teachers’ defence, hearing individual readers is extremely time consuming and arguably not the most effective use of their time. Assuming it takes approximately 7-8 minutes to listen to each child read; it would take about 4 hours to hear a class of 30 children. After assembly, registration and break times are factored in, this would take nearly the whole teaching day. Parents should be reassured that even though children might not read individually with their teacher very often, they will read with teaching assistants and volunteer helpers. In addition, they will do guided reading with a teacher (where a group of children read the same text and focus on comprehension and thinking skills). It is therefore up to parents to ensure that lots of reading gets done at home. Research carried out by the Save the Children ‘Read On. Get On.’ Campaign has found that parents can

make a huge positive impact on children’s ability to read – even if it is for just 10 minutes a day. Ideally, reading should be part of an everyday routine, as much as brushing teeth is. If it is a ‘normal’ thing to do, then incentives shouldn’t be needed and equally, reading won’t be seen as a chore. Making reading part of a daily routine can sometimes be easier during term time, rather than during school holidays. This is also helped by the deadline of having to fill in the reading record book by a certain date. Everyday routines might be thrown out the window during holidays, but it is important to try to find a way to keep reading going. Take the time to ensure children have access to inspiring books at the right level of difficulty and other reading material that they choose themselves. Getting children to read for pleasure is the ultimate goal. Children learn in different ways and enjoy different types of books. Many children, particularly boys engage better with non-fiction books. Don’t panic if your children don’t warm to Biff, Chip and Kipper books – there is plenty more out there!
Holidays are the perfect time to let children have more choice in what their read, without the pressure of being told what to do by school. If children want to read comics or football magazines, that is fine too! Audio books are a brilliant way to keep children’s interest in stories alive. Long car journeys are a great place for a captive audience! These can either be bought as CDs or downloaded from websites such as www.audible.co.uk. Try to keep bedtime stories going through the holidays. As children are outside more, staying awake later and having more sleepovers, it is very easy to put a DVD on before bedtime rather than reading a story. There is a virtuous circle between enjoying reading and being a good reader. Research for the ‘Read On. Get On’ report demonstrates that children who do not enjoy reading are ten times more likely to have fallen behind at school by 11. It is a parent’s job (and hopefully a pleasure) to help and encourage all children to read at home and develop a love of reading that will last a lifetime. The National Young Writers’ Awards Return! It’s a strange thing – and quite a peculiar happening! Because it’s official – the National Young Writers’ Awards have returned for an electrifying, time-defying seventh year!
Back by popular demand, children from all over the country will compete in one of the biggest writing contests of the year – taking on the challenge of putting pen to paper and writing a 500 word story to the theme of ‘Strange Events and Peculiar Happenings’.
Previous judges of the competition have so far included some of the UK’s most prolific authors, like Cressida Cowell, Liz Pichon, Andy Cope and Alan Durant and this year’s judge is none other than author of the hugely popular World of Norm series of books, Jonathan Meres.
Since launching seven years ago, tens of thousands of children have battled it out to be crowned National Young Writer of the Year where they are awarded the coveted prize of a trip to Disneyland Paris for their whole family – and £500 worth of books for their school!
Jonathan says; “I’m genuinely intrigued to discover what children can make up when they put their minds to it. This competition is a perfect opportunity to let young imaginations run riot. And as far as I’m concerned, the more riotous the better!”
The contest is organised by English and maths tuition provider, Explore Learning, which has 112 centres located across the country. How you can help your children with playtime learning Play is an essential part of childhood development as children learn best when they are having fun. Learning through play helps children develop social and cognitive skills, gain self-confidence and mature emotionally. As parents there are a number of ways that we can provide a platform for learning through play activities.
Let’s pretend… If you think back to your own childhood, you probably have great memories of making up games and acting out the scenes of your own story. It is important for a child to make believe as it offers the chance to act out aspects of their own lives and also to understand the roles of people around them. As a parent you can supply a few simple items to help them to use their imagination rather than directing how they play. You can use something as simple as a few pegs, sheets, boxes so that they can create a den or you could set up a minikitchen with some pots, pans, plastic cups and plates.
Developing physical skills Only half of seven year olds are getting the hour of exercise that they need every day according to research by the UCL Institute of Child Health. Encouraging you child to take part in energetic play not only helps with their physical well-being but will also help them develop confidence in their own skill, strength and judgement. Setting up an obstacle course in your garden or a park is a great way to help them judge direction, speed and distance. This type of activity also allows them to use their sense of control and balance as well as spatial relationships as they move around, through and beside things.
Sounds and music Children love rhythm, dance and singing, and helping your child to experiment with songs and rhymes develops many skills. You could make up your own songs or get little ones to sing along to pop songs or nursery rhymes. Musical activities will help them with skills such as listening and understanding language.
Water or sand play Have you ever noticed how much fun children have playing with water or sand (or both?) Tipping and pouring water from one container to another or building a sand castles helps develop
muscular strength and hand eye coordination – they can even learn through play while on the beach or in the bath. In the garden you could set up a paddling pool, bucket or washing up bowl containing water along with various objects such as plastic jugs and cups or watering cans, so children can experiment with pouring and filling water (always supervise children when playing in or around water).
Build it up Children just love building a tower and knocking it down, then rebuilding again – this game also develops their mathematical skills as they learn how many blocks they need and how tall their tower is. While building with toy bricks, children also learn about measuring and balancing, about making a plan, deciding what materials are needed for it and then carrying it out. Building activities also develop hand eye co ordination and manual skills as children select and manipulate objects. Children’s continence charity launches constipation awareness campaign The children’s continence charity ERIC (Education and Resources for Improving Childhood Continence), recently launched a national campaign called ‘Let’s Talk About Poo’ to raise awareness of childhood constipation among parents of 2-4 year-olds and health and education professionals working with this age group. Constipation is most common in toddlers and pre-school age children; it is important to tackle it at this early stage to prevent it becoming chronic and having a long-term impact on children’s health and wellbeing. The launch of a new website offers information about the signs, symptoms and treatment of children’s constipation. The website features ERIC’s fun and colourful wee and poo characters and an interactive game about poo. The aim of the game is to make children more comfortable talking about poo and poo problems. ERIC’s resources about understanding and maintaining healthy bowels are available to download from the site letstalkaboutpoo.eric.org.uk The earlier the signs and symptoms of childhood constipation are recognised the easier it is to resolve and to avoid it becoming chronic. According to NICE guidelines, many parents don’t recognise the signs and symptoms of constipation and few relate it to the presence of soiling. ERIC’s campaign will raise awareness of children’s poo problems and improve understanding of constipation to ensure it is recognised and treated at the earliest possible stage. The campaign is supported by children’s TV presenter and paediatrician Dr Ranj Singh, who commented, "Constipation can be a major problem in childhood, and if not treated properly, can lead to issues in adulthood too. Unfortunately, it can be a difficult subject for both parents and children, but the good news is that it's relatively straight forward to sort out. It doesn't have to be embarrassing and no-one should suffer unnecessarily – we need to get used to talking about it!"

Exercising when you have no childcare by Dr Joanna Helcké
Most of us don’t realise what immense freedom we have until the day our little ones are born – freedom to do what we want, when we want, whether that be evenings out, weekends away with the girls or… exercise. The question is how to exercise with your baby in tow?
Shopping for a newborn We understands what it means to be a parent and we know you want to give your baby the best start in life. With this in mind we have created a handy checklist for items you might need for your baby’s first few months. You don’t need everything straight away, but these are the essentials l A cot and mattress, a waterproof mattress cover, plus sheets and blankets that can be added or taken away according to temperature changes. l A Pram, pushchair or travel system plus sun canopy or parasol l Change bag, changing mat, toiletries, wipes and enough nappies – either disposable or reusable (in the early weeks babies get through up to 10 nappies a day). l Feeding equipment – if you're bottle feeding you'll need bottles, formula and sterilising equipment. If you're breastfeeding and plan to express milk, you'll need bottles and teats, and a breast pump, plus nursing bras and breast pads. l Towels and flannels for bath time l Plenty of bibs and muslin squares for little dribbles! l Enough baby clothes for the first 2-3 months including cotton sleepsuits, vests, hat, scratch mittens, socks, cardigans, shawls and suitable outdoor clothing for when the weather is cooler. l If you are travelling anywhere by car, you will need an infant car seat. l A room thermometer, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detector, baby thermometer, first aid kit and book. Other handy things to have include l A baby bath and bath thermometer l A moses basket and stand or crib l A sling is useful when you need your hands free and also beneficial for the bonding process l A baby monitor l A Baby thermometer l Baby brush and comb set l Nappy wrapper Before you buy, take time to talk to friends that have recently had a baby as they will have tried some of the items on your list and can give you an honest opinion about quality, convenience, what they found useful and what was a waste of money.

1 The first thing to remember is that the effects of exercise are cumulative - no need to find an hour-long block of time as you can do five minutes here and there and it will all add up. 2 Consider online fitness that you can access and do anytime anywhere. 3 Getting outdoors is one of the best ways of exercising with a baby: in the early months using a baby carrier is ideal and will keep your baby happy whilst you go for a power walk. 4 As your baby grows heavier start using a buggy for your power walks. As well as the cardio work from powering up hills, park up near benches and give yourself sets of press ups, and tricep dips to complete, or hook a resistance band over a branch and work your upper body. 5 Finally, once your little one reaches the age of 6-9 months, you’ll be able to invest in a suitable bike seat, so ditch the car and take up cycling to make your library visits or travel to all the baby groups you attend. Make sure your kids are safe this summer British summertime sees families from across the nation heading to seaside locations for their holidays. Kids love to be in water, whether that is swimming at their local pool, splashing about in rock pools or playing in the waves by the beach. It is something of a tradition for kids to play in the sea with friends and siblings while their parents watch from the comfort of their deck chair, but parents need to be constantly aware of where their children are and what they are doing to make sure they are safe. The ASA, Englandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s national governing body for swimming, and the RNLI, the charity that saves lives at sea, take annually to beaches and lakes nationwide to provide children and their parents the opportunity to learn about staying safe in open water and understand beach safety.
Children must be aged between 7-14 years old and be able to swim a minimum of 25m unaided to take part.
Swim Safe runs during the Summer Holidays, 6 days a week during the period. Each session includes a 10-minute talk with RNLI lifeguards and 30 minutes in-water tuition from ASA qualified swimming teachers completely free of charge.

24 year old Aston has suffered a number of complicated health issues including autism, a serious bowel condition, Pica, extreme depression and anaphylaxis shock on three occasions. But he always fights back and since enlisting in a local drama school has managed to achieve ISTD grades in both Drama and Dance and has just taken his Grade 3 Ballet exam.
Aaron was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome at 30 years old. As a former special needs teacher, he consults with Birmingham schools on strategies and raising awareness of Aspergers. He is also well known to a Midlands audience as a singer/songwriter, music producer and tv/film score writer, and has supported acts such as Leona Lewis, McFly and Scouting for Girls.

HBekah Cook Bekah has autism, a language disorder and suffers from hypermobility; for which she needs a wheelchair when her pain is at its worst. Every day is hard for Bekah – there is emotional and physical pain, but dance has changed her life! Against all the odds, at 11 years of age she ranked 3rd in the World in gymnastics and at 14 she attended a residential Ballet Company where she found herself touring as a leading Swan in Swan Lake. She is currently doing a degree in Dance and it’s her dream to make it as a professional dancer.
HBradley Turner Bradley Turner is 17 years old and from a very young age he has loved music and has always enjoyed being the entertainer and performing. Over the years his love has grown – two years ago he started taking singing lessons and he hasn't looked back since. He has entered several talent competitions and raised awareness for autism by singing at many autism events. His greatest pleasure in life is to bring a smile to people's faces and make them happy when he sings. Bradley says,” The bigger the audience, the more I love it!”

Callum, 8, was born in Russia and spent a year in a Russian orphanage. He has always had his struggles and been a bit different to his peers. He was diagnosed with adhd and Asperger syndrome also odd, ocd and anxiety but despite the struggles he faces everyday he brings joy to those around him. Street dance and breakdance have become his passion; building his self-confidence and giving him goals for his future. His dream is to be a famous dancer and dance with diversity.
HCalvin Glen Calvin, 14, is a songwriter, guitarist and pianist. Diagnosed with Asperger syndrome seven years ago, he has had problems coping with school and social interaction but music has changed his life; giving him the confidence to be himself. He began playing music two and a half years ago as a way of releasing emotions and frustrations. He is now performing 3-4 times a week at various venues and events, including bars, hotels, theatres, festivals and on local radio stations. He covers a wide range of popular artists from 1950s to present day as well as writing his own original songs.

This year Autism with Attitude from Hillingdon Manor School are putting on a show bigger and better than anything you’ve seen before. They have double the amount of students, costumes and tricks, and all the students involved have worked exceptionally hard throughout the year to entertain your socks off!
HCorinna Kampalis 10 year old Corinna, has always loved music and dancing. She previously entered the TeenStar singing competition, having gained a place in the competition through an audition. She has no formal training and her TeenStar experience last year, was her first time ever performing in front of others or on stage. Taking part in ‘Autism's Got Talent’ is only her second! Corinna would love to be famous and performing on stage at Autism's Got Talent will help her achieve some of her goal.
HJoshua Bateup Joshua, 11, is working towards becoming a full-time author. He is very musical and enjoys playing drums and making up songs and rhythms. He also likes dancing but most of all he loves singing and can’t wait to entertain the Autism’s Got Talent audience.
HKaner Scott Unable to speak until he was four, Kaner found his school years difficult. At sixteen he discovered dance and was captivated by the dance style Flexin. At first he danced for fun but eventually he quit college to dance and has taken it seriously ever since. At seventeen he became homeless and had to stay at a hostel for several months. His break came when he moved into his own studio flat and his dance career flourished – he reached the semi-final of Got to Dance and has worked with artists such as Rita Ora, T pain, and Fka Twigs.

HLauren Lovejoy Lauren from Nottingham has Asperger syndrome which makes social interaction difficult for her. She was tormented by bullies throughout her childhood and faced daily taunts about her appearance. However, the bullies or Asperger syndrome didn’t hold her back – this inspirational young woman is a song writer, singer, model, Miss Universe GB finalist and she also made it through to boot camp on X Factor. She raises awareness of autism and Asperger syndrome and is also an ambassador for Strongbones Children’s Charitable Trust.
HLuke Dolphin Luke, 14, has played guitar since he was 8. Luke’s ambition is to be a ROCK STAR! He loves playing in front of an audience, as it brings out his extrovert side and gives him great confidence and self-esteem. He has played rock classics as part of a band, as well as playing solo at various student shows, school concerts and talent shows. He has always been passionate about rock music particularly heavy metal and plays his guitar every day for fun and relaxation.
Michael has been playing Guitar for 12-13 years. From an early age it has been his ambition to perform music professionally and since leaving school at 18, this ambition has morphed into not just performing live but composing, recording and distributing my own music – which he has done since completing a degree in Music Technology last year. He would now like to expand to a wide range of genres and gain universal credibility.

Dancers from the award winning Pineapple Performing Arts School will be taking to the Autism’s Got Talent stage for the fourth year to partner autism charity Anna Kennedy Online in raising awareness of autism.
Performing at Autism’s Got Talent 2015, The Hassocks Allstars Blues Band is a group of 6 extremely talented young people – Callum, 16, plays lead guitar, Rhys, 17, plays bass and Cameron, 17, is rhythm guitarist. William, 18, plays guitar, bass, saxophone and vocals in THABB and can also play keyboard. Bandmate Lucy King, 15 is the vocalist but she can also play piano and drummer Joe Goately, 14, is the youngest member of the band.
HThe AutistiX The AutistiX are a unique rock band. The band’s sound sets them apart, but the 3 youngest members do too; drummer Saul Zur-Szpiro, guitarist Jack Beaven Duggan and Luke Steels on bass and backing vocals, all have autism. The band launched their first EP ‘Butterflies and Demons’ in January 2014, and the band’s latest recordings, launched in November 2014 as a double ‘A’ side, ‘Something Better’ and ‘Just The Same’. Their first music video of ‘Just the Same’ was produced by the charity Fixers to illustrate how the band transforms lives through inspiring others with disabilities to achieve their dreams.

Windsor & Anna Kennedy OBE HThomas Puttock Thomas, 18, was diagnosed with autism consistent with Asperger syndrome and learning delay when he was four years old. He has had considerable problems with communication and interaction, and has overcome huge problems expressing himself and understanding others. He has a fabulous sense of humour and a large repertoire of songs, sketches and poetry which he loves to perform – everything from Monty Python to Phantom of the Opera. He works out his own dance moves and has a fantastic audio visual photographic memory. He hopes to go to The Orpheus Centre in Surrey to do performing arts and learn to live independently.
A treat awaits the Autism’s Got Talent audience when Anna and her People’s Strictly partner Robin become team Robanna once again. In the words of Craig Revel Horwood, ‘’One word, three syllables: fab-u-lous!’’

Specialist support for adults with autism at WLCC West London Community College is specialist autism provision for adults. Our main aim is to support individuals to reach their potential through a personcentred approach/ programme as identified within their care plans. Community participation and the development of social skills are at the heart of the tailored programmes for all students. Placements are available to students aged 16+ who for many reasons are unable to continue in a specific educational service. West London Community College provides individually tailored programmes to students attending from across fourteen local authorities and has been operating for fifteen years, five of which have been over two campuses – The Stables Courtyard in Hayes, Middlesex and Colne Lodge, in Uxbridge, Middlesex.
The Stables Courtyard Offering daily support for up to twenty six students, with five separate programmes in operation, The Stables Courtyard is able to meet a diverse range of needs daily. Additionally, there is a positive behaviour unit within the Courtyard for up to three students each day.
Colne Lodge With the capacity to support a daily maximum of ten students, Colne Lodge specialises in complex needs and severe communication issues. Staff are trained to deliver a variety of communication methods including PEC’s, Makaton and Intensive Interaction. Colne Lodge has a fantastic sensory room and a pretty, fully enclosed rear garden which also gives access to a small gym. In addition, both sites operate a forty three week per year Saturday respite service which is perfect for those who don’t enjoy being away from home overnight, but still achieving a meaningful period of respite for parents and carers.

Good rating for Hillingdon Manor School by Ofsted Hillingdon Manor School had a full Ofsted inspection in March 2015 and is proud to announce that Ofsted awarded the school a ‘Good’ rating across all areas.
Responses to Ofsted’s on-line questionnaire ‘Parent View’ were analysed and the outcomes of recent surveys, conducted by the school were considered, as well as sixty five questionnaire responses from members of staff.
Inspectors observed 18 lessons across both of the school’s sites as well as holding meetings with the proprietor’s regional manager, the headteacher, the senior leaders, staff members and students.
Ofsted inspector’s key findings stated that

Baston House School rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted After a full Ofsted inspection in October 2014 Baston House School are very proud to announce that the school was rated ‘Good’ across all areas. During the inspection 12 lessons or parts of lessons were observed jointly with theinspector and the headteacher and meetings were held with the school's leaders, teaching staff and students. A range of documentation was examined, including policies, behaviour logs, assessment records, the curriculum and teachers’ plans and procedures for keeping students safe. The inspector heard students read
and looked at their written and other work and the inspector observed them at break times. The views expressed by 26 members of staff through survey questionnaires were considered as were 13 responses to Ofsted’s Parent View survey. A number of parents and carers also contacted the inspector about the impact the school has had on their children.

Supporting Progress and Achievement in Autism Challenges and potential benefits of specialist provision away from home Positive and effective early intervention with high quality resources is an optimum in autism. While this is an ideal, identifying that a person is autistic does not necessarily follow a textbook course; and progress and development before and after a diagnosis (if made), is of course individual to that person. For many, a diagnosis does not come early. While much effort has been made to develop sensitive and effective screening tools, the multiplicity of potential presentations of autism means for example, that “classic” autism represents just one part of the “spectrum”. Diagnosis can also be difficult because expertise and resources are limited and can be concentrated in particular parts of the country and/or at particular centres of specialist expertise. Once a diagnosis has been made, this does not mean that resources for appropriate and timely support and intervention – social, educational and otherwise – are always available, or available for the long term, to match the evolving needs of any one person. There is for example, an identified lack of speech and language therapy provision in the UK for under-5’s with autism, but also recognised are
the economic costs of not intervening, in terms of additional support that can be required in later life. The earliest a child may come to live at a Hesley school is eight years of age, though generally it is later, with the majority of young people being twelve and above on arrival. Hesley’s specialist residential services comprise two schools and two colleges for children and young people and a range of provision for adults.
“A focus on progress and achievement helps enhance self-esteem and increase independence” When a person comes to live with Hesley, it is in the context of autism, learning disabilities and particularly complex needs, including behaviours that may challenge, which it has not proven possible to address in other settings. Resources and facilities are provided on an individual and small group basis and can often enable good progress. Expert and experienced staff work in high quality therapeutic environments, in conjunction with comprehensive, multidisciplinary therapeutic clinical teams, to provide thorough assessment
and comprehensive, high quality, personcentred, individualised education, care and support. Speech and language and occupational therapists utilise Intensive Interaction and specific sensory approaches, in ways that empower staff and can also be shared very positively with families. There is a focus on building relationships through meaningful activity and on people being actively engaged and appropriately busy each day. Each person has a planned, progressive, regularly reviewed pathway of care, to take them through and beyond Hesley provision, at a pace that matches their needs – potentially back to home areas. A focus on progress and achievement helps enhance self-esteem and increase independence. Hesley’s own unique, valuebased model of positive behaviour support – the Hesley Enhancing Lives Programme (HELP) – unifies the various strands of provision for each person. Because Hesley services are highly specialised, they are focused in one part of the country – South Yorkshire. However, access to all services from around the UK is good. Ongoing, positive family contact is actively supported. Hesley offer accommodation on-site for families and can assist with alternatives and transport and other arrangements, so families can make the best of visits. Hesley also place a strong emphasis on keeping all those who live in services safe. It is recognised that a child or sibling living away can be hugely difficult. Through the provision of excellent and safe services, in which people live happy, progressive and meaningful lives, Hesley hope that potential distress can be limited, so for those living in services and their families, life can be as positive as possible.
