EDUCATION

Raising Children’s Self-esteem by Dr. Lin Day, Founder of Baby Sensory Self-esteem is the feeling that children have when they believe in their abilities and talents, and when they feel loved, valued and accepted by other people. Self-esteem is extremely important to the happiness and wellbeing of children. It gives them the power to believe in themselves, the confidence to make new friends and the emotional strength to deal with stress and frustration. When their selfesteem is high, they will learn and do more. The development of self-esteem begins at birth. It is strongly influenced by a nurturing attachment to a sensitive and responsive parent. When babies feel loved and wanted, they are more able to face the challenges of the world when they become toddlers. Positive relationships with siblings, friends, caregivers and teachers can help children form a healthy self-image. However, parents play the major role in the development of self-esteem. If children feel good about themselves, and how their parents perceive them, their self-esteem will shine. Helping your child to develop strong selfesteem is one of the most important things that you can do as a parent. Here's how you can help:

1

Talk to your child, ask questions, make eye contact and use plenty of body language and touch.

2

Spend quality time with your child. A few minutes of undivided attention every now and then will make your child feel special.

3

Encourage, admire and value your child’s interests and opinions, even if they differ from yours.

4

Don’t expect your child to excel at things just because you did. This can be a tough call if your expectations are high.

5

Recognise and appreciate your child’s talents and build on them. This will boost your child’s self-esteem and carry over into other endeavours.

6

Be generous with praise when your child does something well or attempts to succeed. This could be anything from getting dressed in the morning, to playing sports or telling a story.

7

Involve your child in household chores and responsibilities. This will help your child feel valued and important.

8

Frame your child’s artwork, badges and trophies. Seeing them on display will give your child a lift when their selfesteem falters.

9

Avoid making comparisons with other children. Your child is unique and will develop at his or her own pace.

Dr. Lin Day PhD Dip. Ed. BSc. PGCE. M. Philo.uk www.babysensory.com

10

Avoid criticism that takes the form of ridicule or shame. Help your child make light of things that do not work out as planned.

11

Keep a close eye on your child’s friends. If your child feels intimidated or bullied, this can shake confidence and lower selfworth.

12

Ensure that your home is childfriendly and welcoming. Seeing your child happy will be well worth the effort of tidying up the mess at the end of the day.

Even if you become short on patience and encouragement at times, a predominant pattern of nurturing and caring is what really counts. However, if you are experiencing problems that affect your ability to parent effectively, get help from a professional. It can help to talk to someone who can offer support and encouragement to both you and your child.

EDUCATION Urban Gate Project: “helping children and adults reconnect with nature”

An Introduction to Forest Schools and Family Development

Do you remember playing in the park or visiting the woods? These children are out bilberry picking at the Lickey Hills Country Park. It seems they found other uses for the bilberries besides eating them!

Urban Gate work with parents, teachers and anyone working with children to create an outdoor learning experience, using green open spaces and natural resources. American journalist and writer Richard Louv, in his book Last Child in the Woods, talks about “Nature Deficit Disorder.” and his fear that if children are separated from nature, lifetime effects may ensue. Urban Gate is passionate to see today’s children reconnect with nature bringing balance to their lives. For varying reasons many children spend more hours indoors and can become disconnected from nature and natural experiences.

using the Outdoor classroom. “Not all children thrive in the indoor classroom and not all children learn by listening” says Sheila. Urban Gate founder Sheila Ross says “Family development through reconnection with nature is so important in creating and maintaining balance in all our lives.” Urban Gate offer training days

The workshop briefly explores kinaesthetic learning style and learning through observation, reflection and the benefit of the outdoor classroom for all subjects including Mathematics, Science, Geography, Arts and Crafts.

Spend a day with us to identify natural materials and resources and understand basic ecological principles. You can build a den using natural materials or make a wooden mallet, and will have sampled a variety of creative games and crafts. At the end of the session you will be able to approach outdoor learning with confidence.

Established since 1997, Ladybird Day Nursery provides a friendly stimulating and safe environment where children enjoy challenging activities that stretch their imaginations and help develop a range of new skills. Registered with Ofsted Early Years – all staff hold appropriate childcare qualifications. The nursery also benefits from a large, secure garden and CCTV. Feeling Good with Feel Good Friends is the award winning company whose fun, educational products help children feel good about themselves and their world. We have just launched ‘Feel Good Games’, which is a 6-in-1 card game based on feelings. The games include snap, pairs, opposites, ‘Only Roly’ and ‘My Feeling’. There is also a new A1-size Feelings poster in the range. Teaching children about feelings and how to express themselves from a young age gives them important life skills that will benefit them throughout their life. These skills are critical for their wellbeing and for building relationships. The first step in coping with a feeling is identifying it, which is why it is so important to explore the language of feelings with children, expanding their vocabulary of feeling words and their meanings. When children learn to express themselves they will be better able to calm themselves and bounce back after conflict and disappointment, and they will get along better with others. Feel Good Friends resources are great tools to help children become familiar with different feelings in a fun way. And as well as having fun playing the games, there are all sorts of other ways of using them. For example, using the cards or poster for children to point to how they feel if they are unable to express the feeling.

Competition Fun! We have 3 sets of the new game and posters to to give away to My Family readers. To enter, email SMILE under the subject header MY FAMILY to info@feelgoodfriends.com along with your name and contact details. Closing date for entries is 30th April 2012. To find out more visit

Dyscalculia: finding the right support for your child The world of learning difficulties can be a minefield for parents to traverse, often with new conditions and symptoms being discovered. Explore Learning has written a guide to dyscalculia and how,as parents, you can help your child. Dyscalculia can be identified as a difficulty in the reception, production or comprehension of number facts or spatial information. Put simply it is a difficulty understanding basic number facts and manipulating numbers. Children with dyscalculic tendencies can often display great frustration and anxiety when faced with mathematical problems.

Boost Confidence by giving lots of praise and reward for the effort your child is putting in. Showing your child that their input is just as important as the outcome can greatly reduce the stress and anxiety created when trying to get the answer right first time. Make maths relevant by exposing them to real life situations.Try giving them a handful of change and ‘charge’them for dinner as if in a restaurant, or challenge them to guess how many minutes it will take to complete simple every-day tasks.

Break tasks down into smaller chunks as children with dyscalculia can struggle to follow tasks with lots of instructions. Showing them just one step at a time can make the whole task seem much less daunting.

Learning difficulties such as dyscalculia have no ‘quick fix’but they can be overcome. Here are six tips that can help make maths more accessible to your child, whether they have been formally diagnosed with dyscalculia, or are just finding the subject tricky:

Repetition and practice are crucial and doing extra-curricular activities that reiterate the work that has been done in the classroom can really help your child to keep up in the classroom. In our experience of working with children with dyscalculia, with the help of competent tutors, a lot of effort and the right attitude, every child can make progress in maths and regain their confidence.

After working with a child that is finding maths tricky, the most rewarding part of my day is hearing them show off to Mum and Dad a concept that has just ‘clicked’ with them! A priceless feeling!

Lise McCaffery, Explore Learning tutor

Work at the right pace by using individualised support programmes that only move on once a topic has been mastered. A good support plan will move at a pace that your child is comfortable with, ensuring they have retained the basic facts before advancing to more complex activities. Boost enthusiasm by making learning fun. Playing puzzles and jigsaws as a family can improve your child’s spatial awareness, whilst the use of technology such as computers can make a tricky subject become more accessible and engaging.

Maths & English tuition

Inspiring tuition for 5-14yr olds of all abilities!

The product was awarded gold in the Practical Parenting and Pregnancy Awards 2011/12 and has attracted interest from as far afield as Australia and Japan, only recently it has appeared on the ‘One Show’ on TV in the USA. HOLIDAYS & LEISURE

Tips for Travelling with Children All families are different, but when it comes down to it there are some basic requirements for a good family trip. Most family breaks run smoothly if well planned with all members of the family taken into account. Ultimately this will mean that you can spend more time doing the things you love and less time discussing where and what you will be doing.

The pleasure is in the detail If this is your first trip with your children, plan for a slower pace than you might usually attempt. Be realistic about what you can cover with little ones in tow – the less you feel you have to pack in, the more enjoyable and stressfree the holiday. If you are travelling with a small child a pram or buggy can be useful even if your child is walking. It will serve as a place for them to rest when covering a lot of ground or a makeshift bed when they are worn out. An all-terrain version is worth the investment if you are going to be walking a lot or on unpaved paths. If you are travelling with another family, or adults, discuss what each person wants to do before you go and how much time you would like to spend together. Come to an agreement about the way you'll split the bills and arrange how chores will be shared. Discuss taking turns childminding and dedicate childcare responsibilities during travel.

Keeping little ones safe It doesn't matter how good a parent you are, it can happen the best of us! You look away for a just a second and in an instant your child has vanished. Your heart races and your stomach sinks. It's an awful feeling. Right? Always designate a meeting point in each new place, in case anyone is separated from the group. If it's likely you'll be in dense crowds, promise a group reward if everyone stays together. A wireless child locator system is an ideal way to keep track of your child in crowded places such as shopping centres, airports, theme parks or sporting arenas. The parent carries a tracking device – while the child wears a separate part of the device. Should the distance between the child and the tracker exceed the user-defined range, or if the bracelet is removed, an alarm sounds and a bleeper will help track down your little one. In case of emergencies, an identity bracelet detailing your child's medical condition, treatment and their doctor's name is useful if your child has a disability, hidden medical condition or serious allergy. A great range of brightly coloured and sporty identity bands for kids are available from medicalert.org.uk. Always use a car seat when travelling by car regardless of the regulations in your destination. A universal model is a good idea if you are using a variety of vehicles or hiring a car.

For general guidelines and information about fitting child's car and booster seats, go to childcarseats.org.uk. For children with a disability or special needs www.crelling.com can provide seats and harnesses for a variety of travel requirements including aircraft travel.

Childcare Look into supervised childcare, such as kids' clubs before you go. Ask what activities the children will be involved in, how many children are cared for and whether groups are split according to age. Be prepared to check it out yourself when you arrive and make sure that all the necessary paperwork including CRB checks are in place. If anything seems amiss, be prepared to cancel your plans and start looking for alternatives. Having your own personal Nanny can open new doors: cottage/villa holidays can become realistic possibilities, instead of ‘dreams’ for the future, when the children have grown up. If you holiday with other families, you could consider sharing a Nanny to cut costs. With My Travelling Nanny you have an extra pair of hands, ears and eyes when you need them – someone else to help do the suncreaming, spend endless hours in the pool, sing Humpty Dumpty or wipe sticky fingers. You might even get some breathing space – which as well as family fun is what holidays are all about. Visit www.mytravellingnanny.co.uk for more information.

Let’s Play Fair! Play is a fundamental part of any child’s development and as parents we know from our own childhood how important the toys that we played with were. Toys and games bring children together, helping them to build friendships, as well as skills such sharing and communication. The interaction of play strengthens family bonds and many of us will have fond memories of times playing with parents and siblings as they enjoyed our toys too. Unfortunately not all toys are capable of withstanding hours of boisterous child’s play. As a mother herself, Karen Tait was unimpressed by the selection mass-produced plastic toys available and decided to create an online

store offering toys that would not usually be found in typical retail stores. Today, Let’s Play Fair is a wellestablished familyrun company that has blossomed into a reliable, easy to use online store supplying wellknown brands including Lilliputiens, PlanToys, Lanka Kade and Imajo. Best sellers include traditional rag dolls that can be personalised with the child’s name and a gift box to add an extra special touch! Their range of traditional wooden toys are extremely popular too, favourites include skittles, jigsaws and even castles.

COMPETITION FUN! Let’s Play Fair are offering a lucky reader the chance to win a Plan Toys Concertina – the perfect gift for a child to learn different musical sounds. To win simple email the answer to the question below, along with your name, address and telephone number to info@letsplayfair.co.uk

BIRTH & BEYOND

Breastfeeding Advice by Breastfeeding Counsellor Claire Burns The first time I breastfed was over 13 years ago when my son was born. My experience was a good one and he latched on very easily from birth. By the time I breastfed my 4th baby 3 years ago things had got a little more rocky! He too latched on easily from birth but when we came home we had a few unexpected problems. A couple of weeks in it became very painful. At first I thought it was sore nipples, which is normal in the beginning, but after a week or so of trial and error and a visit to my GP, we discovered Toby and I had thrush and were passing it backwards and forwards between each other. Some Nystan, a few tears due to painful feeds and a great deal of perseverance meant within a week we were back on track. There were a lot of times during that period when I contemplated giving up so I can completely understand why so many new mums decide formula is the way forward. 78% of UK mums start out giving breastfeeding a go which is actually a good chunk of people, but by 6 weeks approximately 52% of those have moved to formula. There are lots of different reasons why new mums stop breastfeeding or choose not to breastfeed at all. 75% of mums who initially breastfeed but have stopped by 6 weeks would have liked to continue for longer but many feel it is either too painful or that the support just isn’t there.

Claire Burns Breastfeeding Counsellor and founder of A Beautiful Mummy, Breastfeeding and Maternity Boutique www.abeautifulmummy.co.uk Tel: 01524 771544 claireburns@abeautifulmummy.co.uk

26 myfamily

Some of the most common reasons for stopping breastfeeding are sore nipples, inadequate milk supply, the baby having difficulties in latching on or feeding and a perception that the baby isn’t satisfied, which often isn’t the case.

1956. However in recent years they have been promoted more successfully, giving new mums the facility to talk to someone about ANY of their worries when they need it, which is a vital ingredient to the success of this type of support.

With the right support most problems can be overcome but support needs to be there right from the start, reassuring new mums that these issues are normal and no question is a silly one.

Breastfeeding is a very individual decision, and doesn’t work out for everyone but at least whatever you decide the support is in place to help.

Another fear many new mums have is breastfeeding in public. Nobody likes to feel exposed or embarrassed, and breastfeeding is a completely natural thing – but breastfeeding publicly often brings out strong opinions from both sides causing conflict and unnecessary stress. Before embarking on public breastfeeding I would always advise new mums to practise at home when friends and family come to visit. This way you can feel confident which in turn makes you naturally more discreet. Being in the middle of a restaurant and having your breast pad fall out onto the table is embarrassing for anyone but you are more likely to brush it off if you are confident about breastfeeding first. I do think in the last few years things are getting better though. Support groups like La Leche League and National Childbirth Trust were both formed and have been supporting new mums since

Healthy Eating in Pregnancy Pregnancy should be a blissful, happy and exciting time – there are a few things that might stress you out but eating should not be one of them. Sometimes the advice that you get from friends, family or even total strangers can be rather confusing as there are a lot of old wives’ tales out there! If you are wondering what’s ok and what’s not ok to eat check out my guide . . .

Foods to Avoid EGGS . . . raw egg may be tainted with Salmonella and bacteria that can cause fever, vomiting and diarrhoea. Watch out for restaurant made Caesar salad dressing, homemade eggnog, raw cookie dough and soft scrambled eggs. SUSHI . . . with the exception of Californian rolls and other cooked items, sushi is not safe whilst you’re expecting because it may contain illness-inducing parasites

MILK AND JUICES . . . make sure everything is pasteurised – this process kills bacteria and toxins. Most products sold in stores are usually pasteurised; but always check the labels.

FOLATE (FOLIC ACID) . . . Eat daily – increased Folate is needed for the first 4 months of pregnancy, it is found in leafy green vegetables, pulses, liver, oranges and poultry.

CAFFEINE . . . when it comes to caffeine the studies done can be rather confusing . . . some say it can damage the foetus others say it does not. My personal advice would be to allow yourself a couple of cups of coffee or tea a day; so grab your coat and head for the nearest Starbucks.

IRON . . . necessary for the production of red blood cells in both you and your unborn baby – iron rich foods are red meat, pulses, raisins, spinach and dried fruits. Eat daily.

SOFT CHEESES . . . they usually harbour Listeria. Listerioses is an illness caused by bacteria which can be passed on to the foetus leading to miscarriage, premature death, or even stillbirth. FISH . . . it contains fatty acid which contains Omega 3 great for brain development. Don’t eat more than two to three servings a week.

The Good Stuff Now on to the good stuff . . . what you can eat. During your pregnancy your appetite can soar . . . it’s important however to make sure you get more nutrients NOT more calories. Having said all that, doctors recommend that whilst breastfeeding you add 500 calories to your daily intake. Always eat a well-balanced daily diet and include the following… PROTEIN . . . eat a serving of protein rich food every day, such as lean red meat, poultry or fish. CALCIUM . . . adequate calcium intake in pregnancy is very important to avoid Osteoporosis in later life. Two to Three servings per day is needed.

FIBRE . . . increased intake of fibre from fruit, vegetables and wholegrain is recommended daily to avoid constipation in pregnancy.

Requirements for Breastfeeding Mothers who are breast-feeding should have a well-balanced diet especially rich in vitamins A, C and Calcium. CALCIUM . . . mothers who are producing milk should make sure they get 1250mg of calcium each day. Between 2 to 8 per cent of total body calcium is used for the production of breast milk. VITAMIN AND MINERAL SUPPLEMENTS . . . below is the table of the vitamin requirements for all mothers to be (mg=milligram, mcg=microgram) Vitamin A 350mcg

MAGNESIUM 50mg

NIACIN

30mg

ZINC

FOLATE

60mcg

6mg

Whilst breast-feeding some substances from foods that the mother eats may affect the baby in adverse ways, such as irritability, colic, bloating, wind and diarrhoea. The foods that can often cause these symptoms are milk, dairy produce, eggs, wheat, citrus fruits, coffee, chocolate, garlic, cabbage and cucumber. My advice is still have them but in smaller quantities. If you would like more advice about healthy eating for you and your family, contact me now for a personal consultation Telephone: Email:

Celebrate International Women’s Day on the 8th March Every year on the 8th March, the world celebrates International Women’s Day, recognising and applauding women’s achievements as well as for observing and highlighting gender inequalities and issues. Women's organisations and governments around the world observe IWD by holding large-scale events that honour women's advancement, while diligently reminding of the continued vigilance and action required to ensure that women's equality is gained and maintained in all aspects of life. With more women in the boardroom, greater equality in legislative rights, and an increased critical mass of women's visibility as impressive role models, one could think that women have gained true equality. The unfortunate fact is that women are still not paid equally to that of their male counterparts, women still are not present in equal numbers in business or politics, and globally women's education, health and the violence against them is worse than that of men.

However, great improvements have been made. We do have female astronauts and prime ministers, girls are welcomed into university, women can work and have a family, women have real choices. Therefore, the tone and nature of IWD has moved from being a reminder about the negatives to a celebration of the positives. Annually on 8 March, a global web of rich and diverse local activity connects women from all around the world, to inspire and celebrate women’s achievements. Ranging from political rallies, business conferences, government activities and networking events through to local women's craft markets, theatric performances, fashion shows and more. You can join them and make a difference, think globally and act locally!! Make EVERYDAY International Women's Day – do your bit to ensure that the future for girls is bright, equal, safe and rewarding. Visit www.internationalwomensday.com and www.weareequals.org for more information.

To celebrate International Women’s Day 2012, My Family have bought together a group of inspiring women, from all walks of life – campaigners, mumpreneurs, inventors and business owners, who want to share their achievements with you . . .

Business Mum 2012:

Anna Kennedy Every so often, My Family magazine comes across a truly remarkable person. A special person, driven by a good cause, whose selfless actions make the world a better place. Mother-of-two, businesswoman and autism campaigner Anna Kennedy is that special someone! A regular to the pages of My Family, the mother of two autistic sons, she knows first hand the struggle that half a million adults and children in the UK with autism, and their families, face.

Refusing to accept defeat, Anna remortgaged her home and set about rallying the support of local councillors, companies, charities and the media to get the venture off the ground. After much hard work, endless campaigning, tears and frustrations, Hillingdon Manor School opened its doors on 4th September 1999. Today, her business Autism Consultants Limited provides services to adults with autism and Asperger syndrome, helping them to maximising their ability and minimising their disability. The company runs the independent living skills provision, West London Community College and the Old Vicarage Residence, an eight-bedroom home in Uxbridge.

With mainstream school completely unsuitable for the needs of her two sons and twenty-six special schools turning down applications for Patrick and Angelo, Anna didn’t know where to turn. Faced with the difficulty of finding anywhere that would provide educational support for her boys and the lack of suitable local childcare, she took drastic measures. Having discovered a derelict school in Hillingdon, Anna approached the local council and asked if she could turn it into a centre of excellence for children on the autistic spectrum. Hillingdon Borough Council eventually agreed she could lease the school, but at an asking price of £627,000!

Anna with Akinyi Dulo, Principal, Hillingdon Manor School

But, it doesn’t end there; last year the amazing mumpreneur went on to open a further specialist school for children 5 to16 years with autism, Baston House School in Kent. And, in November 2011, Anna launched ‘Step In the Right Direction’, a unique dance and exercise DVD for children and young people with autism, which she produced association with the world-famous Pineapple Performing Arts School in London. Anna has received recognition for her achievements far and wide including, runner up for The Daily Express ‘Women of Substance’, winner of Smooth Radio’s ‘Live Life’ award, 2010 winner of ION London and The South East ‘Director of the Year – Chairman’s Award’ and My Family Magazine’s 2010 ‘Star’ award for raising awareness of Autism.

Anna with pupils at Hillingdon Manor School

A driving force in the autism community, Anna is also a founding member of ACT NOW (Autism Campaigners Together), a core group of people passionate about the future wellbeing of children and adults with an autistic spectrum disorder in the UK. Fighting cuts to welfare, health, education, services and provisions, the national campaign has gained 10,000 active supporters including some of the UK's leading autism professionals, MPs and members of the House of Lords. Anna hasn’t stopped developing ways to communicate with the wider audience and charity website www.annakennedyonline.com and blog www.annakonline.com offer a wealth of autism specific support and information to both parents and professionals. With regular tweets @AnnaKennedy1 keeps over 7,000 twitter followers up to date with the latest autism news and her facebook page (well actually her second, because Anna reached over 5,000 friends with the original) www.facebook.com/Annakennedyonline is liked by over 1,400 of us.

Two years later, we are proud to announce Anna Kennedy as My Family’s ‘Business Mum of the Year’. In our summer issue we will be presenting Anna with the award, in recognition of her success and the businesses built upon her dedication to supporting those on the autistic spectrum. If you would like to send a message congratulating Anna, please email anne@myfamilymagazine.co.uk and we will feature some of your comments in the next issue of My Family.

What’s Special About Lynne James?

Award Winning Mum Melinda Holohan

Lynne James started working for herself in 1996. Today, she has the 8th most successful business within Forever Living Products in the UK, earning a six-figure income, whilst working part-time and flexibly around her two sons. ‘There is nothing special about me’, she says. In fact, over the last 14 years she has helped many other people to realise their own success – but where did Lynne’s journey begin? I was fed up, demotivated and disillusioned with my role as an executive PA, when I was introduced to Forever. Straight away, I was attracted to the huge flexibility and potential offered by the company and started to work with Forever alongside my full-time job. To my surprise, within a year I had given up my job and become pregnant with twins! I realised that the business would enable me to be true to an important value of mine, which was to stay at home with our children, whilst at the same time develop a very successful career and income. Was it a bed of roses? Was it easy? Absolutely not, and I didn’t expect it to be – I knew that this was a business, not a little thing I was doing for pin money. I knew I would have challenges, up days and down days, and I knew I had to keep focused and true to my vision of success. I now have a lifestyle that I love and I never have to go back to that 9-5 job ever again if I don’t want to, and believe me, I don’t want to! The income I now earn allows me many perks that I wouldn’t otherwise have been able to afford, such as a private education for my children, and it also allows me to give away more. Sadly my mother died of breast cancer in May 2004, but I am now in a position where I can contribute regularly to Cancer Research, as well as a number of other charities. To find out more about working with Lynne and Forever Living Products call 01295 722525.

Circa, a wooden educational calendar toy, scoops its fourth award in six months with a Highly Commended award for “Toys that Help Communication” at the Talking Tots Toy Awards 2011. Talking Tots is a national provider of fun, interactive classes that encourage preschool children’s communication and social skills. The Awards were designed to help parents and carers find toys that spark children’s imaginations and encourage them to make new discoveries. What the panel said about Circa: “This is a beautifully crafted fully interactive calendar helping to teach children the days of the week, months of the year and days of the month. There are fun nursery rhymes on the reverse side of the disc to help children to remember the days of the week and months of the year. Time concept and sequencing is an essential part of language development.” Mum of two and Circa inventor and director of eleventyone Limited, Melinda Holohan comments, “It’s fantastic that Circa continues to receive such accolades from experts and testers alike, as it validates its appeal as both a toy and a learning tool. Circa is all about learning through play.” Circa has also been recognised with: I Top Drawer September 2011: Best New Children’s Product I Rainbow Toy Awards 2011: Highly Commended – Wooden Toy Category I British Female Inventors and Innovators Network (BFIIN) Awards: Winner – Inventors Award, Semi-Finals 2011 Circa is an innovative educational toy that helps children understand the cycles of the calendar. New Career as a CNM trained Nutritionist worth a Gamble Jo Gamble, Nutritional Therapist and College of Naturopathic Medicine (CNM) graduate, tells us her inspirational story of how she built a business following her daughter’s serious illness. “At 19 months old my daughter Georgia was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. By her third birthday she was having chemotherapy to try and combat this auto-immune disease. “I tried a variety of therapies and took my daughter to nutritional therapists and we regularly saw a Naturopath in London but after a while thought, ‘I could train and do this myself’. I knew a distance learning course wasn’t for me and I needed to study locally as Georgia was still in hospital. The College of Naturopathic Medicine (CNM) enabled me to study at weekends in Birmingham. The CNM course is recognised as one of the most respected within the industry and worked perfectly for my situation. Training gave me an in-depth knowledge of naturopathic nutrition and its effect on the body so it really helped me to treat my daughter. Georgia is now 9 years old and is fit and healthy – this is a miracle after doctors told us she would be in a wheelchair for life. “I’ve taken my passion and knowledge and turned it into my career. Previously I’d worked as a behavioural therapist for 12 years but after graduating I wanted to help other people who’d been through the same situation. When my daughter was sick I desperately wished that someone could have guided me through it and showed the different treatments and options out there. Now I do this for families with a child going through cancer, offering advice on food, supplements, homeopathy and herbs to work alongside medical treatment. It’s such a personal journey that has led me to this point where I have a career I love and is also very flexible for when I still need to take Georgia to hospital. Being a working mum is never easy and I’m constantly pushing myself further but this is the most rewarding job in the world and, most of all, I have a healthy daughter.” Jo set up Nutrition Mission in 2009 with fellow CNM graduate Debi-Ann Wrigglesworth with the aim of helping people with their health and vitality using primarily food but also lifestyle changes and supplements (www.nutritionmission.co.uk). Jo set up two charities KICT (Kids Integrated Cancer Treatment) and The Alfie Gough Trust in memory of a young patient who lost his battle with cancer. Alongside this work, Jo is also a senior lecturer at CNM Birmingham. To find out more about CNM’s Nutritional Therapy course go to www.naturopathy-uk.com or call 01342 410 505. Colleges are in London, Bristol, Birmingham, Brighton, Manchester and Edinburgh.

Lynne Churchill I came across Teething Bling in 2010 and was totally blown away. I knew, being a mother (of now three children), that this would be a real hit in the UK! I just had to bring it here and show the UK mums what they were missing out on. So I began my journey. I had never worked in retail or merchandise and had NEVER done any buying at all. Neither had I built or designed a website, it was all new to me. But I did it and last March I launched Teething Bling to the Great British public! Now I am the Sole Distributor for the UK and I love it. It's been a great hit with over 3000 fans on Face book and 1600 followers on Twitter in such a short space! We have had editorial in Vogue, Junior Vogue, South Wales Echo, Mother and Baby, Practical Parenting,

Baby London, Angels and Urchins and been buy of the day with the Independent not to mention many more. We are now looking for mums to work in their areas selling Teething Bling in their own time, working flexible hours around their children. If you think that this could be for you email lynne@smartmumuk.com or call 02920 842527 for more information.

Emma Benson: The Holo Story!

Emma got to work on the project and Holo® was created!

Invented by mother Emma Benson, Holo® has arrived in the world of pregnancy comfort.

Holo® is suitable at any stage of pregnancy from the moment it becomes impossible to lie on your tummy, right up until the birth. Not just for holidays, it’s ideal for pregnant or sensitive tummies to use on land or water, to lie on your front for relaxation, massage and sunbathing. Holo® is used by Physiotherapists and is proving to be popular with pregnancy yoga teachers too.

Originally the idea came to Emma just over 5 years ago, at 28 weeks pregnant, while on holiday in Spain. “I was aware that lying on my back with my tummy in the sun was not advisable, as apparently an unborn baby doesn’t like the brightness in its eyes and will turn away in the womb. Lying on my front was just not an option unless I dug a big hole in the sand! It seemed obvious that all I needed was a lilo with a hole in it for my tummy to go in,” explained Emma.

A Beautiful Mummy:

Claire Burns Mum-of-four, Claire Burns, had always planned to return to work as an IT Service Manager with IBM after the arrival of her fourth child Toby. Instead, suffering with postnatal depression, she found herself wanting to hide away in her Lancashire home. Claire knew that breastfeeding would be an important part of the bonding process, but with three other children, busy school runs and endless after school activities,

Shea Mooti:

Claire explains, ‘I did manage to find some excellent clothes and some fabulous websites but the majority of them came from overseas. The final straw came when I ordered two breastfeeding tops and they got stuck in UK customs for 6 weeks!! – at which point, I joked with my husband

Violet Reid

Shea Mooti was founded by former nurse and mum-ofthree, Violet Reid. When her first child, Alex, developed dry skin and eczema, she found the prescribed steroid creams and harsh shampoos only provided temporary relief while other ‘organic and natural’ products made the condition worse. Violet realised the only way to be certain the creams she used on her baby were natural and pure was to make them herself. So that’s

it wasn’t going to be easy. She set about trying to find fashionable but comfortable clothes that she would feel good in; this was a turning point in her recovery!

exactly what she did. She enrolled on a natural soap-making course, became totally addicted and soon branched out into creams and potions.

International interest is growing and Holo® is proving to be an instant hit with happy mums-tobe worldwide.

“The holo was good for getting back massages from my partner in the last few weeks. I have now passed it on to a pregnant friend who loves to sleep on her front and she is very grateful for it. Thank you and hope all is well with you.” Kirsty McCabe Weather Presenter, ITV Daybreak

that 'I could do this and make breastfeeding clothes readily available to mums like me'; and here I am!’ A Beautiful Mummy was born, and today the award winning company offers a stunning collection of breastfeeding wear and maternity couture to ‘yummy mummys’ around the world. 2012 is set to be an exciting year for the company with the launch of A Beautiful Mummy’s own label and the addition of an exciting new swimwear collection. So, watch this space… www.abeautifulmummy.co.uk

Three years and three children later, Violet was still making her soaps and lotions, testing them on Alex, Abi and Seb plus friends and family, who all went on to place orders for their friends and families. That’s when she decided to think big and share her fabulous natural products with the world. The Shea Mooti ‘Mama to Be’ product range includes: Mama’s Everything Body Balm – the most versatile product in the range. This beautiful balm can be used to soothe and moisturise the bump, bottom, lips, knees and even heels.

The couple worked closely with Tees Valley Wildlife, Askham Bryan Agricultural College and local volunteers on programmes including bird, bat, pond and

From Mum to Mumpreneur:

Sarah Bartram Sarah had always wanted to start up her own business to work around her two girls – Lauren Gemma and Katie Jane.

For many months she ‘played around’ with the idea but taking the huge step into selfemployment was quite daunting and seemed like a long distant dream that may never happen. In January 2010 Sarah was admitted to hospital and diagnosed with Septicaemia, which left her seriously ill and in intensive care. Thankfully the doctors worked their magic and after some major surgery Sarah was sent home on strict bed rest for 6 weeks.

she was going to take the plunge and start up her own business. She designed and created her own site, sourced the goods she needed and launched Gemma Jane Designs in April 2010 and has never looked back since.

Realising that life was far too short for “what if’s”, Sarah decided that no matter what, To see Sarah’s full story visit http://gemmajanedesigns.blogspot.com

Anna Silsbury: My Friendly Lunchbox When her daughter started school, mum-of-two Anna Salisbury became increasingly frustrated with the whole lunchbox thing. Fed up with leaking bottles that made the drink smell and taste of plastic, containers that were never the right size or type, and the waste that got thrown away every day, she searched the internet for waste free lunches, bpa free bottles and leak proof food containers. Although the concept of a waste free lunch was very popular in the US, Canada and Australia, there was not a website in the UK dedicated to these products. Sure that there must be a better way of providing a healthier, waste free lunch for her daughter, she seized the opportunity and launched her own online store.

Today, My Friendly Lunchbox sells a wide range of eco chic and durable food containers, lunch bags, bottles and ready to use, waste free lunch kits to likeminded Brits.

“I knew I wanted to breastfeed my little boy and I wanted to feel confident when doing it, especially when in public.

“Keeping my after-baby tummy covered and getting back into my favourite clothes after six months of maternitywear was a must! I tried lots of the wraps/scarves/ covers which were out there and tried breastfeeding tops too but was frustrated by them being pretty shapeless, often complicated and always costly! “I knew I was going to have to come up with a better solution. I started cutting and stitching and after a few hours was so excited to have created the very first breastvest – a top that would turn every top into a breastfeeding top and always keeps mummy’s tummy covered up. “I was immediately quizzed by fellow breastfeeding mums on what I was wearing and where I'd

Aiming to provide a truly “holistic” experience for all her clients, Patricia uses the techniques most appropriate to restore harmony to mind, body and spirit; (sometimes combining several therapies for best effect) resulting in the reduction of stress levels and impacting on client’s general well-being. Wanting to share her skills and experience, Patricia started Elysium School of Complementary Therapy where she teaches Crystal Healing Therapy and Reiki, privately and through Adult Education Learning, as well as workshops in subjects such as Angels, Crystal Reiki, Sacred Geometry, Atlantis, New Earth Reiki, Celestial/Sound Workshops.

Wood and Willow was launched at the end of October 2011. I was made redundant in March 2011 from a Sales and Marketing role in a hotel. With no redundancy package, I had to either find another position or make my own business work. Hotel jobs often mean shift work and with three children, and my husband also having three children, shift work is not always possible. Having sourced home and garden products which I loved and of which many are willow basketware or wooden, the name Wood and Willow seemed an obvious choice! I worked with a wonderful web designer who could see my vision and the website was born, I joined the Twitter community in November last year and have found it to be probably the best marketing tool possible as it is free and I reach thousand of potential customers and suppliers. I won Small Business Sunday run by BBC Dragon Theo Paphitis in January this year which has led to a radio interview on BBC Northampton and local newspaper editiorial. I now have dedicated UK Handmade pages on the website for small UK businesses to showcase their work and I totally support the Buy British Campaign. I work on average at least 12 hours a day in between school runs, cooking dinner, helping with home work and being Mum’s Taxi Service! It is hard but I love what I do and my children and husband have been so supportive. During the lead up to Christmas our Kitchen was a production line with everyone helping with wrapping and packing orders! Being a “Mumpreneur” is definitely not the easy option, and when you start out life revolves totally around the Business but I am doing something I am passionate about and learning everyday.

FROM BUMP TO BUSINESS

Business networking basics When we think of business networking, we usually imagine a meeting of strangers in suits. This can seem intimidating if you’ve never tried networking as a way of promoting your business before, but it needn’t be that way. Networking is getting to know people so that they are happy to refer their contacts to you. When you need a plumber, hairdresser or a solicitor, you’re far more likely to ask around your friends if they know of someone good than you are to phone the first number that comes up on a Google search. To increase the chances of that happening for your business, you need to grow your network so that you’re known and trusted before your potential clients need you.

48 myfamily

Most women are natural networkers. We’re good at making connections, passing on information and helping one another. And the great news is that you don’t even have to go to formal networking meetings unless you want to! Up until a few years ago, business networking was usually done at networking meetings. While these are still popular – and can be very effective – online networking has grown enormously recently. This is great news for parents with young children, as you can network from home at any time of day or night. That said, there’s nothing like meeting people face-to-face if you can. Networking groups vary from the more structured ones (where everyone stands up in turn to do a one-minute speech) to informal, relaxed events. There are womenonly networking groups, mums-in-business networking groups, breakfast meetings, evening meetings and more, so if you don’t feel at home in a group, there are plenty more to try. Or you could start your own. Keep in mind that you shouldn’t expect to come out of a networking meeting having made a sale. Don’t be too pushy. Be relaxed, low key and find out about the other person you’re speaking to rather than giving them a sales pitch. Combining online and face-to-face networking is a very effective strategy for bringing new business your way.

Helen Lindop Helen Lindop is the coauthor of Start a Family Friendly Business: 129 Brilliant Business Ideas for Mums. She is also the founder of the website, BusinessPlusBaby.com, dedicated to helping mums of young children start their own businesses.

You can break the ice before you even meet by saying ‘hello’ using social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn, then stay in touch between meetings in the same way Don’t forget that you can also network on the bus, at the school gates and in the queue at the post office. It’s often just a matter of being friendly, helpful and interested in the people around you. You never know who they may know and may able to connect you with. Or who their husband, mum or best friend may be able to connect you with! However you choose to network, remember that following up afterwards is essential. If people only meet you once, they are not going to get to know you. They may not even remember you. Aim to build strong, long term relationships and people will refer their friends and colleagues to you for months and years to come.

We all know how much babies love to grab and chew. For that reason, most mums don’t wear jewellery when their children are young. We are changing that! Teething Bling® is the original teething jewellery. Made from the same material as most teething toys, our teething pendants and teething bangles look great on the adult wearer but are safe for curious babies to handle and chew. Our teething products are non-toxic, phthalate, BPA, PVC, latex and lead free and all pendants come with a breakaway clasp as an added safety measure. Diabetes Rises By 50% In 5 Years . . . Make Sure You Don’t Become A Victim! By Melanie Taffs – Nutritionist and Dietician

The number of Diabetes sufferers in Britain has risen by 50% in just five years. This is caused by soaring levels of obesity and by being overweight. Three million Adults and children now have the condition with 117,000 cases being diagnosed this year alone. The cost to the NHS is 9 billion pounds every year! The figures show that this condition is very serious and that it is hugely on the increase. The everyday person on the street is probably unaware of the seriousness of this disease and it is thought that a further 1 million people have type 2 Diabetes and have not yet been diagnosed.

There are two types of Diabetes – Type 1 and Type 2 In TYPE 1 the body does not produce any insulin – the key hormone which delivers sugar to cells. If you have excess fat it upsets the working of the insulin which means that the body cannot break down sugar or glucose and use it for energy. The excess glucose builds up in the blood and is passed out in the urine. This type is usually genetic and is treatable with the self-administration of insulin daily. TYPE 2: This occurs when the body does not produce enough Insulin to break down sugar and glucose to be used for energy. In children this means that the body does not get crucial energy for growth and development. This type is the most common and can easily be avoided with a healthy balanced diet, exercise and maintaining a steady weight.

Some 90% of sufferers have Type 2 Diabetes and rising numbers of children are being diagnosed each year whereas previously more cases were seen in adults. The reason for this sharp increase is the love of junk food, rise in obesity, being overweight and lack of exercise. If you show symptoms include frequent visits to the toilet, increased thirst, extreme tiredness, unexplained weight loss, blurred vision and impotence, you should seek medical advice from your GP.

The Time For Action Is Now! Diabetes Type 1 is genetic but Type 2 which is the most common can be easily avoided by making simple daily changes to your diet and lifestyle. Eat a varied diet of proteins, carbohydrates, fresh fruit and vegetables and cut down on carbonated drinks, sweets and cakes. Exercise on a daily basis by using the stairs rather than the lift, walk or cycle to school and work – just try to include some kind of activity into our daily life.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

What is Dopamine? By Janice Wilson

Dopamine is one of the most important neurotransmitters in the central nervous system. We need it for the control and coordination of movement and to stay alert, active and motivated. It is vital for “executive” functions such as constructive thinking, concentration and memory formation and is necessary to generate pleasurable feelings and sexual desire. Dopamine also has a positive effect on the heart, circulation and metabolic rate. Low levels of dopamine are usually associated with Parkinson's disease, but now, new research is linking low dopamine in other parts of the brain to a variety of health problems incuding: I I I I I I I

anxiety attention deficit disorders cravings and addictions chronic fatigue low mood and depression poor memory restless legs

Janice Wilson BPharm, MRPharmS Founder of Simply Vital

How to improve dopamine levels and functioning Dopamine is made in the body from the amino acid tyrosine which is derived from the proteins we eat or from the amino acid phenylalanine. Unfortunately, eating more tyrosine-rich foods does not automatically confer higher dopamine levels. The only proven way to improve dopamine levels/function is by increasing the level of phenylethylamine (PEA) in the brain. PEA is a neuroamine we produce when we feel happy, calm and in love (hence it has been coined the “love molecule”) and as well as its positive effects on the dopamine system, it improves mood, mental acuity and concentration. PEA taken by mouth is normally rapidly metabolized but fortunately we can get extra PEA into the nervous system by supplementing our diet with a special, blue-green algae called Klamath AFA .

containing significant amounts of PEA together with specific antioxidants that allow its entry into the nervous system. This property makes Klamath a very valuable commodity since it can be used to improve all conditions associated with low dopamine and avoid the need for drug therapies. At Simply Vital we agree with Hippocrates, the father of medicine who said “Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food”! To read more about Klamath AFA and the specialist range of supplements we have developed please visit www.simplyvital.com or call 08706091180.

Klamath blue-green algae is the most nutrient-dense food on the planet and the only food

Dopamine and development Our individual dopamine levels and functioning reflect our genetic tendency and our development in the womb and during childhood when the nervous system is developing rapidly, but they are also known to be reduced by stress, lack of the right nutrients, ageing and certain medications. From mid-life for example, dopamine levels start declining at a rate of approximately 13% each decade, which accounts for many of the general symptoms of ageing such as fatigue, poor sleep quality, reduced emotional activity, depression, reduced motor activity, loss of muscle tone and cognitive function. In women, low dopamine levels exacerbate the physiological and psychological effects of the menopause, producing more severe hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disturbances and mood swings. For men, the effects of falling testosterone such as; decreasing muscle mass, increasing body fat, reduced physical energy/endurance, gradually decreasing libido, loss of bone density, increasing cholesterol etc are all exacerbated by declining dopamine.

Children’s Healthy Snacks Ideas By Melanie Taffs – Nutritionist and Dietician

By teaching your children healthy eating habits when they are young, you will help them maintain a healthy weight, and they will learn good eating habits for life. It isn’t always easy to get it right, so here are some approaches you can take to develop healthy eating habits for your kids:

1 2 3 4 5 6

Guide family food choices never dictate food. Make sure there is a choice of healthy foods in the household. Involve children in buying and preparing food as it’s a great opportunity to teach them about nutrition. Discourage eating whilst watching television, as this may lead to overeating. Encourage water as a beverage, as over consumption of sweetened and carbonated drinks is linked with obesity. Snacking can lead to overeating, so only have them at specific times of the day and make them as nutritious as possible. One final point to make – as a child my Nan used to send a food parcel for my brother and I every fortnight, it contained homemade cakes, crisps and chocolate, this was such a treat for us. Never deprive your children of treats totally, but keep them limited and don’t give on a daily basis. Sweets, cakes, chocolate and crisps should not be part of the daily diet but unfortunately today this is what they have become.

Tips for Snacks Put snacks in a sectioned container and place it in the bottom of the fridge so that your children can help themselves throughout the day. Also buy resealable food bags or good quality, leak-free lunchboxes to transport food when out and about. Snacks: Carrots (cut up) • Celery • Cheese cubes • Raisins • Bananas Popcorn • Apples (sliced) • Grapes (seedless) • Yogurts Nuts (if not allergic) • Peanut Butter on crackers or wholemeal bread Milk • Cereal (granola) • Red, Green Yellow peppers (sliced) with hummus dip • Olives • Wholemeal bread and oil Flapjack (made with oats) • Sunflower seeds • Dried Fruit If you would like more advice about healthy eating for you and your family, contact me now for a personal consultation Telephone: 07792421080

Don’t let drink sneak up on you A brand new nationwide Change4Life campaign will expose that drinking slightly over the lower-risk alcohol guidelines can seriously impact long term health

I 66 per cent did not realise it increases the risk of bowel cancer;

The advert highlights that regularly drinking around two large glasses of wine or two strong pints of beer a day triple the risk of developing mouth cancer and double the risk of developing high blood pressure.

I 30 per cent did not realise it increases the risk of high blood pressure; and

A shocking new survey has revealed that most people are unaware of the serious illnesses caused by drinking more than the guidelines. For example: I 85 per cent of people did not realise it increases the risk of developing breast cancer;

I 63 per cent did not realise it increases the chance of pancreatitis; I 59 per cent did not realise it increases the risk of mouth, throat and neck cancer;

I 37 per cent did not realise it reduces fertility. A new online calculator will be available on the Change4Life website to help people check how much they are drinking and work out whether they need to cut down. Two million leaflets will also be available for Change4Life supporters and health professionals around the country. The campaign also offers handy hints and tips on how people can cut down – such as having booze free days, not drinking at home before people go out, swapping to low-alcohol or alcohol free drinks and simply using smaller glasses.

AUTISM

There are over 500,000 people with autism in What Can Be Done? the UK – that's 1 in 100. Together with their Much can be achieved to make life less challenging with appropriate families that's over two million people whose education and support. It is crucial that there are services in place to meet the needs of the half a million people with autism in the UK lives are touched by autism every single day. today.

What is Autism? Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with, and relates to, other people. It also affects how they make sense of the world around them. It is a spectrum condition, which means that while all people with autism share certain difficulties, their condition will affect them in different ways. Some people with autism are able to live relatively independent lives but others may have accompanying learning disabilities and need a lifetime of specialist support. People with autism may also experience over or under-sensitivity to sounds, touch, tastes, smells, light or colours. Asperger syndrome is a form of autism. People with Asperger syndrome are often of average or above average intelligence. They have fewer problems with speech but may still have difficulties with understanding and processing language.

The National Autistic Society is the UK's leading charity for people with autism and their families. Founded in 1962, it continues to spearhead national and international initiatives and provide a strong voice for all people with autism, offering a wide range of services to help people with autism and Asperger syndrome live their lives with as much independence as possible. For more information about autism and for help in your area, call the Autism Helpline: 0808 800 4104 10am-4pm, Monday to Friday (local rates apply). The National Autistic Society’s Autism Services Directory is the UK's most comprehensive directory of services and events for people with autism, visit www.autism.org.uk/autismdirectory to find autism services and support networks in your area.

What Causes Autism? The causes of autism are still being investigated. Many experts believe that the pattern of behaviour from which autism is diagnosed may not result from a single cause. There is strong evidence to suggest that autism can be caused by a variety of physical factors, all of which affect brain development – it is not due to emotional deprivation or the way a person has been brought up. There is evidence to suggest that genetic factors are responsible for some forms of autism. Scientists have been attempting to identify which genes might be implicated in autism for some years. Autism is likely to have multiple genes responsible rather than a single gene. The difficulty of establishing gene involvement is compounded by the interaction of genes and by their interaction with environmental factors. For these reasons genetic testing to diagnose a predisposition to an autistic spectrum disorder is not, at present, possible.

Recipe for a Perfect Lunch Whilst Jane Asher is a highly accomplished actress and successful cake maker, it isn’t widely known that Jane has also been campaigning hard for autism for 30 years. Today she is the Vice President of Autistica, the largest UK charity raising funds for research into the causes, diagnosis and treatment of autism. Jane will be speaking on behalf of the

charity at a fabulous lunch being held at one of Britain’s finest country house hotels, Hambleton Hall in Rutland on Thursday, 17th May 2012. “I am extremely proud and honoured to be a part of Autistica” says Jane. “Autism is a potentially devastating and lifelong condition, which at worst can affect everything needed to function in the world. We know that the earlier the diagnosis, then the better the outcome for the individual affected. It can make all the difference between a life spent in isolation and fear and a life of dignity and fulfilment. Funds are needed to ensure that ground breaking research continues towards our ultimate goal of managing the symptoms of autism so effectively that all those affected have the life that they deserve.” Lynn Hart, Head of Events for Autistica says: “Jane is a wonderful speaker and an inspiration to everyone who meets her. We are thrilled that she has agreed to speak at our very first

fund-raising lunch at Hambleton Hall. It will be a memorable day and one that we are looking forward to immensely. There are many moments that make this job special; when a student initiates a conversation with you for the first time or tells you what fun they had experiencing something new. When you are shown a piece of work that speaks volumes about the progress made

by an individual, watching the wonder on their faces as they discover something new in the sensory garden or the science laboratory; seeing them holding their nerve during formal examinations; taking the bus to town and just learning to cope with the numerous anxieties that autism presents. My underlying feeling is always one of pride, and I feel privileged to be working at Hillingdon Manor School."

Autism’s GOT TALENT! On Saturday 12th May at the Mermaid Theatre, London, Anna Kennedy Online will be presenting with Pineapple Studios ‘Autism’s Got Talent’. This promises to be a great event not only for those in the audience but also those who are coming to join us on the stage. We are bringing together a diverse group of people who are all on the Autistic Spectrum to show everyone just how talented they are.

what someone on the Autistic Spectrum can be capable of, not just a night to celebrate a small section of people, but a celebration of EVERYONE that is on the Spectrum. As ever, in a bid to keep reaching out far and wide across our nation, we have performers that are coming to us from right across the country and even across the sea! Especially for My Family readers, here is a sneak preview of some of the extremely talented performers that will be appearing in the first ever showing of Autism’s Got Talent . . .

All too often many people in society make the mistake of thinking that anyone with a disability is capable of very little . . . HOLD THE PRESS . . . on this evening we will be showing everyone just what all these great people really are capable of and just how good they are at it!!

Emma

Nine-year-old Emma loves to sing, dance, act, make up and likes drawing. Emma didn’t talk much until primary year 1 but she did enjoy singing. When she was four she won a karaoke comp on holiday and a local radio singing competition when she was eight. She entered Britain’s Got Talent in 2011 and got to the last 120. That year she also won the Northern Ireland heat of festival 4 stars and went on to sing at numerous events across Northern Ireland.

Talent comes in many forms so, as you would expect we will be covering many different genres ranging from performers with instruments to singers and dancers. We have some great performers who will not only be participating as soloists but also be coming together to perform in a group, something we are all too often told is too difficult for people with Autism to do! Talent stretches way beyond the field of performance so on the night we will also be hearing from, and championing, people that have done other amazing things, showing great skills in such areas as writing, art and even extreme physical endurance. There will also be informative displays for the audience to view in the foyer beforehand. Doors will be opening at 6pm so we do encourage people to come along at that time and take advantage of the displays in plenty of time before the grand performance starts. This night will surely open the eyes of those who previously didn’t realise just

Alex

Alex loves anything that involves music . . . Dancing, singing, pop/boy bands etc. She loves to run and enjoys colouring, making things and drawing. Her dislikes include travelling, fairground rides and school. Alex was nominated for the Take a Break family hero award, where she was one of the 2 finalists for the East Midlands region. She has helped to organise a number of fundraisers for Heart Link and has been selected as a runner for Newlands Primary School where she will hopefully go on to represent the county.

Nathan

When Nathan Pilgrim was younger he used to watch a lot of videos of music and dancing, particularly of Michael Jackson. People thought this was a kind of obsession typical of a child with autism. Since moving to the performing arts section of Sybil Elgar School, not only has Nathan learned ballet, tap and modern but learns all his literacy and numeracy through performing arts. Nathan has danced in Leicester Square, in the National Autistic Society’s National Day for Autism, also at St James's Palace, for the Countess of Wessex and the BBC is due to make a short film about him.

Jack

James

At the age of three-and-a-half Jack was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. He didn’t respond to strategies such as visual timetables and further assessments reclassified him as having Pathological Demand Avoidance Syndrome and ADHD. Jack’s love of music and dance was evident from an early age. He began attending some street dance classes from the age of five and then developed his own style, based on Michael Jackson's music videos which he watches endlessly on You Tube!

James Hobley discovered his passion for dancing when he was eight years old, he has since gone on to win a number of awards and trophies. His success story was filmed as part of the BBC3 documentary ‘Autism, Disco and Me’ and in 2011 James wowed the nation with his dancing on Britain’s Got Talent. James features in a unique DVD for young people with autism ‘Step in the Right Direction’, and has worked with Anna Kennedy Online, the NSPCC and Childline. James wants to be a ballet dancer in a big company when he gets older and describes dancing as the beginning of his new life. A video about how he overcame bullying to become a highly talented performer can be viewed at childline.org.uk/autism.

Martin

Martin Finn is 19 years old and lives in Atherton, Wigan. He has severe Autism and is none verbal, but loves to sing; music is Martin’s passion. He appeared with fellow performer Carly Ryan in the BBC 3 documentary 'Autistic Superstars' and is also an ambassador for Autism Radio UK, the only Autism Radio station in the UK.

Scott

Scott James was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome at the age of 13. He appeared in X Factor in 2009 both to raise awareness about Autism and to do something for himself. In 2010 Scott released a charity Autism awareness single, 'Through My Eyes', which has been played on TV and radio stations in several countries, downloaded and purchased around the world, and has been hailed as the 'anthem for Autism'.

Andreas

Andreas Lopez-Munro is 16 years old and attends Hillingdon Manor school. His favourite subjects are Art, Mathematics, Science and Music. Andreas has been playing the piano for three years. His interest in music began when a friend who was a grade four pianist introduced him to the piano. This made Andreas eager to learn the instrument and he taught himself how to play the piano during break and lunchtimes at school. He soon got his own keyboard to play at home and has since began writing compositions and developing his improvisation skills.

He has helped raise thousands of pounds for local and national charities including Help for Heroes, Cancer Research UK, various Autism support charities and groups both in the UK and abroad as well as fundraising to send a young boy with Cerebral Palsy to the US for pioneering treatment.

Hillingdon

Manor

The Autism’s Got Talent audience can look forward to a performance by pupils from Hillingdon Manor School, the largest school for children with autism in Europe. The pupils, who feature in the unique dance and exercise DVD for young people with autism ‘Step in the Right Direction’, will be performing on the stage of the Mermaid Theatre alongside Pineapple Dance Studio’s Jade Flannagan.

Luke

Luke Dicker has a talent for talking and his loud voice is perfect for public speaking. He has always been able to explain his autism and alternative behaviour, with a great sense of humour. He adlibs and prepares very little but can happily address 2000 people. He is a great mimic who can talk in any accent and often does, all day!

Carly

From the age of six, Carly Ryan began performing in school shows, singing and acting, something which she enjoyed immensely, and her ability to sing became evident to all who witnessed her perform. A member of two choirs, she has appeared in many charitable events. Carly performed in ‘The Spectrum’, a commissioned work by the composer Andy Whitfield which explains the fears, anxieties, difficulties and struggle that people with autism encounter. She appeared in BBC3’s series ‘Autistic Superstars’ and performed at the annual ‘Genius of Autism’ event at the world famous Carnegie Hall, New York. Pitch perfect, Carly comes alive when performing, but she does not like to practice!! Carly is also an Ambassador for Autism Radio, which she helped to launch in 2010.

Luke has been invited to Buckingham Palace, and has spoken at the House of Lords, House of Commons and at No10. At a charity auction with speaker John Bercow, he helped raised £209,000 for autism. Luke has been to the Arctic and this year he is going to the Sahara.

Jake

Jake Lynch has Tourette’s syndrome, ocd, adhd, dyspraxia and Asperger syndrome. On the receiving end of some really nasty bullying as he went through school . . . there were times when Jake wanted to hide away from everyone and everything. The thing that got Jake through these dark days was his imagination and his ability to tell stories. Story writing became an escape for Jake, who immersed himself in his fantastic tales of good versus evil.

Sam

Sam Burton is age 18 and attends Hillingdon Manor School where his favourite subjects are Music and Art. Sam also has keen interest in photography. He started playing the guitar at the age of 13 because he wanted to be able to play the theme song to his favourite TV show, ‘Drake and Josh’. Sam has since learned to play the theme song and can play music by the ‘Plain White Ts’ and ‘The White Stripes’. He also enjoys writing his own compositions for both guitar and piano.

Jake regularly contributes to online writing forums where he has quite a following. A self-published author, Jake is planning on becoming a full time writer and spends much of his time working on his main story idea ‘The Zirisian Princess and the Shrine of the Serpent’.

We have a great team putting this evening together and there have even been rumours of a red carpet and possibly a few wellknown faces . . .we could tell you more but surely it’s better to come and see for yourselves! Tickets are £10 but we will obviously help any concessions where we can. Everyone is welcome – this will be a very understanding and Autism Aware Audience.
