ernard Lagroue started as a sales consultant in New York. He launched his career with Saturn in 1993, then continued with a brand-new store, Lexus of Manhattan, where he held various positions – from sales consultant to sales manager – until he moved to Florida in 2003. He started with Mercedes-Benz that same year as a sales consultant, and climbed his way to sales manager, a position he held for seven years. Now with over 25 years of experience in the luxury car market, Lagroue is now with Range Rover/Jaguar as the general sales manager. Needless to say, the owners and CEO of that group – which also owns Volkswagen, Nissan, Porsche, Audi, Chevrolet – only hire teams that are honest, have integrity, and will do whatever it takes to make sure their clients have the best possible experience and ensure their satisfaction.

AN ODE TO MIXED ERITAJ Sketch by Maïté Saint Surin

FASHION REVIEW flabbergasted as I clicked through exquisite designs featuring paintings of TapTap’s on full skirts. I knew two things right then and there: 1) I need to move to Italy ASAP! 2) Who IS this shero? What I learned was that Ms. Jean was born in Rome to an Italian father and a Haitian mother. As far as I’m concerned, this was the universe’s blessing unto those of us who have an affinity for impeccable tailoring. Here’s what Ms. Jean told Forbes.Com Travel contributor Livia Hengel: “My inspiration was born from this idea of mixing a western aesthetic – striped shirts, sartorial lines, trench coats and blazers – with the chromatic colors of the Global South. I, myself, was the combination of these two cultures. Black and white may seem opposite, but you can have an intelligent dialogue between the two.” But Ms. Jean’s venture into design had less to do with making women feel conventionally beautiful, and more to do with expressing the unexposed beauty in combined opposites. Having confessed that illustrating isn’t her strongest suit, Ms. Jean began tapping into the creative right side of her brain by juxtaposing her father’s sombre button-down shirts with bright, Creole fabrics. She soon

Vogue - Stella Jean Resort - 2020

From Drake to popular sitcoms like ‘Mixed-ish’ and ‘Black-ish’, we live in an era in which we no longer impose the “pick-a-side” drama on individuals of mixed race. Rather, we implore them to express their unique heritages. To that end, Stella Jean’s Resort 2020 collection is a cultural celebration of her mixed upbringing. The designer’s name alone is a beautiful merger of her ItalianAyisien (Haitian) DNA: Stella, of Latin and Italian origin, means "star”, and Jean is an Aysien biblical derivative of John. The most praiseworthy features of Ms. Jean’s Resort 2020 collection are her denim looks and letterman coat and hoodie pieces, all carefully detailed by artisanal palm trees embroidered in sequences and cleverly underlined by the words “Port Au Prince” and “Roma”, the designer’s home towns. These looks will be staple 2020 wardrobe layering items for the following reasons: • We will be seeing MANY Greek/college/ university inspired homecoming-themed hoodies derived from Beychella’s (Beyonce’s 2018 Coachella Performance) wig-snatching performance. • Between Fenty’s waist-defining denim ensembles and the rising demand for authentic Japanese denim, be prepared to dust off, revamp or repurchase your favorite denim looks. Before we begin the official review of the collection, let’s take a moment to appreciate the muse behind this season’s presentation. Embarking into a more feminine future, Stella Jean drew inspiration from the following high-profile leading ladies in the art world: Thelma Golden (Chief Curator and Director of Studio Museum in Harlem, the world’s leading institution devoted to visual art by artists of African descent); Maria Balshaw, Chief Executive of London’s Tate Museum, a museum with a core focus on British art as well as international twentieth-century and contemporary art); the distinguished Cameroonian-born Koyo Kouoh, who has been serving as Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa since. Ms. Jean’s most important inspiration was the Italian artist Marina Tabacco, who spent a large portion of her artistic career in Senegal. There, she created Dakar, a vibrant abstract-stroke pattern which is a focal point on Jean’s clean silhouette shirtdresses and crisp poplin shirts. Enamored by these women’s eclectic, yet posh and sophisticated styles, Jean named her Resort 2020 collection Le Curator. The following anecdote is for anyone who might be unfamiliar with the ultra-exclusive designer celeb’s background. When I first discovered Stella Jean, I was working in a design studio in New York. As I clicked through Excel, finalizing techpacks and web surfing for design (and life) references, a designer from my team forwarded a Vogue.com link to my email. I was

How Ms. Jean marries the cities of Port Au Prince and Rome on denim is aweinspiring; began cultivating a new story in fashion: vivid artisanal prints retold in conventional silhouettes. She was chosen by Italian Vogue Editor in Chief Franca Sozzani and fashion journalist Suzy Menkes as a finalist in Vogue Italy’s “Who Is On Next?” 2011 competition. She won. Her “Wax and Stripes” – a collection rumored to have been a “social mosaic composition” – helped her nab the attention of Italy’s king of tailoring: Giorgio Armani. Armani offered to showcase Ms. Jean’s Spring/Summer 2014 collection in his Armani Theater in Milan, and also gave her full access to his communications team. She became the first designer to display womenswear in theater.

18 Haiti Open | People Culture Tourism

In doing this, Armani highlighted the importance of not only supporting emerging talent in the apparel industry, but also created an opportunity for Ms. Jean to collaborate with Christian Louboutin on her Autumn/ Winter 2014 shoe collection. From there, a Stella Star was born. Since then, you’ve seen her work on Rihanna, Beyoncé, Zendaya, and many other prominent fashion figures. Now that our current reigning queen of fashion has been properly introduced, en nou review Le Curator Resort 2020 Koleksyon. Until a few years ago, the extent of commercialized Aysien Pride in the fashion sector was predominantly observed in Black Dada’s “Imma Zoe Lyrics”. With the wave of a flag, a display of our distinctive emblem on a sweater, or clever “Sak Pase” slogans on t-shirts, these were our standards for Haitian Pret-a-Porter. Well, this koleksyon obliterates what you thought you knew about bold graphic prints and the adequate use of a hoodie. How Ms. Jean marries the cities of Port Au Prince and Rome on denim is awe-inspiring; it challenges more Ayisien designers to share their affinity for niche designs distinct to their geographical boroughs. We see an eyecatching revamp on the classic Carabella-style dress renovated with a V-neck, wrap closure in full salvage denim (versus the standard use of chambray) and given a romantic synch at the waist. She playfully adds oversized utility pockets to create fullness at the hips, a signature reference to Dior’s 1947 New Look. While the world is still playing with Ankara prints, Ms. Jean is confidently indulging us with Dakar-derivative geometric-like patterns in tapered suits, full skirts, flowy shirtdresses. All of these pieces can be discovered on the designer’s website at www.stellajean.com. As for Resort 2020, remember to keep a refreshing twist in your wardrobe with eclectic, bold prints, hoodies that tell stories, and denim that elevates your style. Be sure to review the collection and tag us in your best looks – and for more style info, be sure to follow Radio Mega 1700 AM on FACEBOOK for Méga Swag Samdi. Until next time!

Woodfired Kitchen Aventura

A Case Study in Employing Knowledgeable Business Professionals to Execute Your Business Ideas Written by Shelly-Ann M. Parkinson

A

s best friends and teammates, Miami Heat legends, Udonis Haslem and Dwayne Wade, always wanted to work together off the court. Taking advantage of the opportunities presented to them through professional basketball and their celebrity status, these two hoop icons were already astute businessmen responsible for multiple for-profit businesses and for each of their non-profit foundations. Haslem and Wade’s first joint venture became the purchasing of the development rights for most of Florida as a

licensee, partnered with the 800 Degrees Woodfired Kitchen brand. 800 Degrees Woodfired Kitchen Aventura was the first to be opened in the State of Florida, with Haslem and Wade as fifty-fifty owners. “Their professional athletic careers have given them an opportunity to create lots of other opportunities. To be able to execute all of them may not always be in their skill sets. Thus, they must have a management team around them to prioritize, to vet, and to figure out who are the best people to add to the team,” says Sylvester King, Jr.,

Haslem’s business manager. King, along with Ginger Gorden, Wade’s business manager, are the directors of the corporation that owns the restaurant. As directors, King and Gorden act on the owners’ behalf in all aspects of the business. Using a great basketball analogy, Gorden explained that, “Sylvester and I are the coaches to Udonis and Dwayne’s team as we are their eyes and ears in the operation of this business. It is our job to explain their vision to the team, vendors, and the community, and to promote a culture of inclusiveness in all aspects of this

RESTAURANTS business venture.” Chef Anthony Carron is an award-winning, internationally acclaimed chef, who started 800 Degrees Woodfired Kitchen in Los Angeles, California. There are multiple locations in California, New York, Cleveland and international

locations in Tokyo and Qatar. King explained that “as a licensee, as opposed to owning a franchise, we have a lot more leeway and input in making the bigger decisions about our individual restaurants.” This proved to be beneficial to both the restaurant and the brand as they

while its open kitchen and wood-fire cooking provides a unique theatrical dining experience inside. This is the perfect space that can accommodate customized events of various sizes. Creative cocktails can be imbibed at the bar. King shared that in 2020, the restaurant will offer food and wine pairing dinners showcasing Wade Wine Cellars, Dwayne Wade’s very own wine label. A second location is scheduled to be opened this year at the Virgin MiamiCentral train station. Despite their status, Haslem and Wade were clear that their priority was to have the credibility of the restaurant and the food, separate from their celebrity. That is why having the right team is so important. As owners, Haslem and Wade are quite involved in the marketing of the restaurant due to their incredible reach. They also have a say in all menu changes and during the construction, furnishing, décor and uniforms will always provide input. 100% of the proceeds from the hats that are sold in the restaurant go towards the Udonis Haslem Children’s Foundation and

decided to elevate the menu and add a bar component, thus, evolving into a full-service option restaurant within the brand. According to Gorden, “It’s been an interesting journey. We didn’t want to be just a pizza place. It’s all about the great dishes envisioned by Chef Anthony and curated locally, by Chef Eddy Donoso.” Now open a little over a year, 800 Degrees Aventura draws in Aventura and the surrounding communities, welcoming mall-shoppers, tourists and residents alike, with its elevated, family-friendly menu. Its large patio offers outdoor dining

the Wade Family Foundation. 800 Degrees Aventura also supports local community organizations such as Julia’s Kids, a non-profit dedicated to children who have suffered grief and loss. Hiring from the local community is also important. King is very proud of what they have been able to accomplish as a team, “When you walk into the restaurant, you will see a representation of the diversity of the community because that’s who we represent. We are very proud of the collaboration that we have had with the brand and with our teams to put us where we are and are

looking forward to adding additional components that continue to draw in the community. Hopefully, this will continue to be a place where people are proud to have their events and to celebrate their special moments.”

“When you walk into the restaurant, you will see a representation of the diversity of the community because that’s who we represent,” says Sylvester King, Jr., Haslem’s business manager.

ENTREPRENEUR SPOTLIGHT

Meet Sandra Florvella

THE CHANGE AGENT STIMULATING ENTREPRENEURIAL ECOSYSTEMS IN HAITI By Shirley Dorsainvil + Photo by Richard Lecoin Haiti is the home of many initiatives and untapped markets. Thanks to Haiti’s digital presence and experiences, there are emerging markets in various entrepreneurial ecosystems. Unfortunately, they are mainly in the capital, Port-Au-Prince. One change agent made the risky decision to shift that narrative. Sandra Florvella, the founder of Haitian Businesses and HaitiTea, sat down with Haiti Open Magazine to talk about her mission to bring business education to her hometown, Cap Haïtien. Florvella discovered “how hungry” emerging leaders and businesses owners are in Cap Haïtien. To satisfy that hunger, she took the knowledge she had gained from previous projects and organized Cap-Haïtien Business Week, a free business education and development event.

Why did you organize Cap-Haïtien Business Week? “I pitched the idea to a few people who could contribute to the event, and, with open arms, they accepted and offered what they had or whatever service they could provide to make the event a reality – and free to the young people of Au Cap.” What happened during and week, and who was present? “The course we started with was business pitch training, and throughout the week we had some other trainings. We ended the week with a business pitch competition, where we had 12 different teams. Each [team] presented their business, their business plans, and how they plan to go about their business. [With a] panel of judges, three winners [were selected], and each winner

won a cash prize they can invest in their business.” Were there any challenges while organizing the event? “In Haiti, things do not always go as you plan. One of the challenges we faced was the instability in the country during the event week. [Unfortunately], there was no gas to provide transportation. and there were roadblocks preventing [attendees] from being involved” in the experience. During Cap Haitien Week, Florvella was flying in from Canada and was advised to postpone the event. Despite that, she persevered. While in Haiti, protests impacted Cap Haitien Business Week, making it challenging for attendees to arrive due to a lack of transportation and barricades. But these troubles only revealed Florvella’s ability to overcome the adversities that might have set her mission back. We were curious to know what she had gained from the experience.

What did you learn about the event? “Never wait a second, never wait a minute, never wait an extra day, an extra week, an extra year to put out what you’re set to do. The country was in total lockdown immediately following that week. If I did not have it that week, the event would never have happened.” What’s the event’s ultimate goal? “Making sure that all the skills the younger generation gained will benefit them, and [that they can] share them on a larger scale to grow ideas into tangible products or services that benefit themselves and the community in a whole.”

CAP-HAÏTIEN BUSINESS WEEK 2019 … WAS A LABOR OF LOVE, AND ANYONE WHO WAS THERE COULD ATTEST TO THAT

CAMALA ROWE MIAMI

WELCOME HOME | BYENVINI LAKAY HAPPY NEW YEAR 2020! BUT BEST OF ALL, HAPPY NEW DECADE! 2020 marks the start of something new—New Year, New Decade, New Opportunity, New You, and hopefully a brand New House. Buyers, as you know, buying a house requires a loan pre-approval, knowing your credit score and having a 20% down payment. Shopping for homes before gaining a loan preapproval is a big home buyer mistake. Some buyers don’t realize how many underwriting deal breakers there are that can cause significant delay when getting a mortgage. Sellers, you have to offer a reasonable price; setting the right price for your home is the single most important decision you will make when deciding to sell. Go too high, and risk turning off every buyer in the marketplace, go too low, and leave money on the table. Improve your curb appeal; a large percentage of homebuyers decide whether to look inside a house or pass based on the way the house looks on the outside from the street and sell at the right time; timing can make a big difference in terms of selling your home quickly and for the most cash.

So, if you are ready to take the leap and purchase or sell a home this year, let’s talk! Now is the time—not tomorrow, not next month, definitely NOT next year. Really, what are you waiting for? Kounye a se lè a— pa demen, pa pwochen mwa, definitivman PA ane pwochen. Vrèman, kisa ou ap tann? I can’t wait to serve you.

JOHNY LUC

THE SERIAL ENTREPRENEUR WHO TURNED HIS COLLEGE PASSION INTO PROFIT By Shirley Dorsainvil

Your college years are a time of discovery that can guide you on a path of change or complacency. Serial entrepreneur Johny Luc gives us an inside look into his former college passion, which is now his career. The restaurateur of Redlight Kreyol Kitchen and founder of Redlight Photography chats about entrepreneurship and fatherhood.

Johny, tell me about your humble beginnings. I am a businessman. I started my business for fun. I started off as an engineer and gave up my job to start a business because of my business potential. I always hear it’s not good to put your hand into too many things, but I like business ventures. Even though I was doing my studies in engineering, I did photography. And because I hate failing, I had to finish it. So, while I was gaining my degree in college, I did photoshoots for parties and events for free. We are curious about how you quit your engineering job to start a restaurant. Tell us why you started the restaurant. I had no clue I was going to do it until one of my friends bought a restaurant and approached me with a business proposal to come on board. Luc saw the potential, and joined in. However, the business did not work out, and they sold the restaurant. Luc fostered growth in his other brands and decided to take a risk again. He decided to buy out all the owners of another restaurant and manage it himself.

If I start something, I have to finish it. What feedback about the restaurant have you received over the last year and a half? I receive good feedback. I even have people traveling from Fort Lauderdale all the way to Miami just to come to the restaurant and eat. My food is authentic. My food tastes different from any other restaurant. We make it with love, we make it just like we make food at home. And I have the best legumes in town!”

How do you juggle family and business? If it were not for my mom, I would have burned out already. I am usually on the road for photo shoots, and having her by my side has helped me manage both my time with my family and the business. What advice would you offer new entrepreneurs about managing multiple businesses?

You don’t have to do it all by yourself. Make sure you get great help from people you trust. People like your mother, your spouse, your children. People you know who have your business interests in mind, because if you succeed, they succeed. The father of two shines a light on the importance of building a trustworthy team to reduce the burden of managing the obstacles of a business. Luc says all business owners should keep an open mind, use all the business tools available them, and seek to encourage business growth. Where do you see your brands in 5 years, 10 years? I see myself bigger and better. In five years, the mistakes I’m making now won’t be repeated. CONTACT INFORMATION: www.myredlightphotos.com redlightphotos

y practice is about having a good rapport with my patients. They are my people. I am their resource, and I want them to take advantage of that,” said Dr. Sabrine Semoin, a North Miami general surgeon in private practice and the Director of Robotic Surgery at Jackson North. This makes her possibly the only Haitian female general surgeon in the immediate area. Born in Petionville, Haiti, Sabrine Semoin moved to Broward County in the 10th grade and attended Deerfield Beach High School. Upon graduation, she attended Florida International University, where she double majored in psychology and biological sciences. With a firm intention to become a pediatrician, Semoin went to medical school at Howard University. On a mission trip to Haiti after her second year of medical school, she accompanied a group of doctors and was the Kreyol translator for Dr. Louis, the general surgeon in the actual operating room. That’s when she knew for sure she wanted

to become a general surgeon. She matched at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York for a very tough surgical program. During her residency, Dr. Semoin was recruited to the United States Air Force Reserves and did active duty after completing her residency program. For three years, she was based out of MacDill Airforce Base in Tampa, and was often deployed abroad to a combat zone. After three years of active duty, Dr. Semoin left the military. South Florida had always been her home base, so she relocated here with her husband, who is also a physician. In addition to performing highly skilled, minimally invasive robotic surgeries at Jackson North, Dr. Semoin also opened South Florida Surgery, her own private practice, in May 2019. She has admitting and surgical privileges at Jackson North, North Shore and Florida Medical Center. Dr. Semoin wants the public to know that minimally invasive surgery is now available for everyone at Jackson and is not

exclusive to people with a lot of money. “Recovery is faster, outcomes are better, risks of wound infections are less, and there are less pain medications necessary afterwards,” she says. “Insurance covers the procedure in the same way as a regular surgery, as it is the same standard of care.” Working in this community is very important to Dr. Semoin. She feels a certain sense of duty and compassion that may be lacking elsewhere. “I believe I can relate to my people in ways that others may not be able to,” she says. “There are social and cultural things that sometimes even transcend language. My mother doesn’t speak English, and I see her in a lot of my patients. Older Haitian patients speak to me like I am their daughter or granddaughter. That is very special to me.” Dr. Semoin is currently pursuing an MBA in healthcare administration, and hopes to grow as a physician and expand her practice to serve her community even more.

fter over 30 years of delivering quality medical care in North Miami, Florida, Dr. Rudolph Moise and his team of dedicated healthcare providers at Comprehensive Health Center have expanded next door into a brandnew, modern, state-of-the-art, twofloor medical complex. The new full-service medical facility opened its doors to patients on November 1, 2019. It offers integrated medical and social services, with in-house billing and records management. Mary Ballantine, Comprehensive Health Center’s practice manager for 19 years, explained that everything about this center was built around patient-centered care. Thus, adults of all ages can be seen for primary care and a multitude of services. An entire floor is dedicated to pediatric care. Patients can also have physical and rehabilitative services and diagnostic testing on premises. They don’t even have to leave to fill their prescriptions, as there is a pharmacy in the building as well. There is a Florida Department of Children and Families ACCESS center at the facility staffed with a dedicated professional to support

those who need help applying for government assistance. Through a partnership with the Health Department, Comprehensive Health Center also has a mobile unit that goes out into the community to implement public health initiatives such as needle exchanges and HIV testing. At the controls of this impressive endeavor is Dr. Rudolph Moise, a true visionary with a unique and varied professional biography that has earned him descriptors such as “renaissance doc” and “unicorn.” Rarely in any one person’s lifetime does one achieve as much as Dr. Moise has (so far). He is not only a physician, but also a lawyer, a United States Airforce Colonel and fighter pilot, a politician, a philanthropist, and a businessman with an MBA. It was at the conclusion of his MBA program over 30 years ago that Comprehensive Health Center was born. In fact, Dr. Moise’s MBA project was entitled “How to Start a Medical Clinic.” He did the research and executed his project after receiving an ‘A’ on the assignment – and a bank loan. Of course, by then Dr. Moise already knew he could do

…everything about this center was built around patient-centered care. anything he put his mind to. After all, he had arrived in the United States from Haiti in 1971, unable to speak English, yet determined to become a physician. With perseverance and discipline, he overcame the language barrier and doubt that others threw at him. He now uses that experience to help others by mentoring, assisting medical students, or through the various organizations he supports. One program he’s particularly proud of is Golden Wishes, which he founded through the United Way Foundation. This program grants “bucket list” wishes to the elderly. Dr. Moise is proud of his accomplishments, but believes that all he’s doing is serving the people of his community. As the first minority physician in North Miami, his

presence was important then – and it continues to be important, as he has become a trusted family member in so many people’s lives. He believes the people of North Miami deserve a quality medical facility and that the neighborhood will benefit from the physical facelift. At 65 years of age, Dr. Moise is showing no signs of slowing down. However, he does plan to retire in

four years, as he is confident that he has built a steadfast machine that can operate without him daily. The doctor does seem to take his own advice, as he seems to be in great health and exudes vitality. He plans to travel and catch up on his book collection once he retires. But don’t be surprised if you see him in politics again. If people are being underrepresented and there is an

opportunity for Dr. Moise to serve, he may not be able to help himself.

MEDISUN MEDICAL CENTER Quality & Compassionate Care in Little Haiti By Shelly-Ann M. Parkinson 50 Haiti Open | People Culture Tourism

T

o the east of I-95 along NW 62nd Street, perched on the corner of NW 1st Place in the heart of Little Haiti, is a little ray of sunshine called MediSun Medical Center. The building’s uplifting and modern appearance isn’t just curb appeal. This remarkable community health center, now open for almost two years, offers Little Haiti’s geriatric residents far more than healthcare, but also lunches, a recreational space, and assistance with applying for social services. MediSun is owned and operated by the husband-andwife team of Alexis and Monica Schloeter, who have lived in Little Haiti since 1999. The couple opened their first medical center in 2005 after recognizing that their community was not receiving adequate medical care. They first realized there was an issue through the deep bond that they had developed with their elderly neighbors who, despite chronic ailments, were not receiving appropriate care. Monica also witnessed her father experience horrible patient care at a South Florida hospital. “When we started in ’05, we were picking up men and women in their 70’s and 80’s who hadn’t seen a doctor in over eight years. We still see the Haitian community underserved, so a lot more still needs to be done,” said Alexis. But the Schloeters did something – and are still doing a lot with love and compassion. Their elderly neighbors, along with the original patients from their first community medical center, are now patients at the new MediSun Medical Center. They know just how dedicated the Schloeters are to the needs of every person in their care. MediSun Medical Center currently offers primary care to patients 65 years old and over and accepts commercial insurance and Medicare. They also offer transportation to and from the facility. Specialty services such as optometry, podiatry, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and acupuncture are offered on premises. The center has a medical director, three nurse practitioners, and a total of nine staff. From time to time, especially in summer, the Schloeter’s two young children, aged nine and eleven, also join in to help their parents in whatever capacity they can. Monica sees every patient as an extension of her own family. “All the patients who come here know us. We know their names. They have our cellphone numbers and know they can call us at any time, and they do. We get very emotionally involved.” Alexis wears multiple hats, as he sees so much need in the lives of the people who walk through the center’s doors. He assists them with everything from applying for citizenship, Medicaid, food stamps, to social security. Going forward, the Schloeter’s long-term vision for MediSun Medical Centers is “to provide an extended quality of life for every single one of our patients for the rest of their time here.” In the meantime, Alexis says the short-term vision is to “get them as healthy as we can for the rest of their lives.”

All the patients who come here know us. We know their names. They have our cellphone numbers and know they can call us at any time, and they do. We get very emotionally involved. CONTACT INFORMATION: 180 NW 62nd St, Miami, FL 33150 (786) 360-5625

Prinston Jean-Glaude

CEO of Primary Medical Care Center, Challenges You to Lose Weight! By Shelly-Ann M. Parkinson

I

n December 2017, Primary Medical Care Center’s CEO, Prinston Jean-Glaude, was in his mid-forties and in relatively good health. However, he weighed 212 pounds and had a chronic health issue he had struggled to control since his twenties. He was slightly embarrassed when he found it difficult to bend over to tie his shoelaces due to the extra pounds around his waist. So he decided to do something about it. He challenged himself to lose the weight in a healthy way, knowing that his health would improve by doing so. After consulting his physician, Prinston set a weight-loss goal of 195 pounds for 2018. He achieved that goal by December 2018, primarily through consistent exercise. Prinston hits the gym three times each week for cardio and weight-training, and does daily situps and push-ups at home. Encouraged by his weight-loss success and finally having his

health condition within normal limits, Prinston, with guidance from his physician, decided to challenge himself even further. For 2019, he set a weight-loss goal of 180 pounds. A deeply religious man, Prinston credits his faith for any success he’s achieved. That also includes his weight-loss journey. Now he has added diet as part of his weightloss regimen. He has eliminated meat, sugar, and rice from his diet and continues to exercise in the same manner as before. His diet was mainly based on the Biblical Daniel Fast, which heals the body, mind and spirit through discipline. Since the beginning of 2019, Prinston has lost 10 pounds and is so excited about it that he’s challenging everyone to set their own health goals, work at them, and achieve them. His wife, Edwige, and sister-in-law, Alie, both accepted his challenge this year and have already achieved their January weight-loss goals! Way to go, ladies! So, are you up for the challenge?

WHAT ARE YOUR HEALTH GOALS FOR 2020?

Prinston Jean-Glaude is specifically challenging community leaders, pastors, priests, employers, civic leaders, and anyone with a following to join him in taking the lead to mobilize people in their organization to reach their individual fitness and health goals. He understands that everyone is different, and that not everyone needs a weight-loss goal to be healthy. Their goals may be to gain muscle mass or to lower their cholesterol, or simply to maintain where they are. If you’re taking up Prinston’s heath challenge, it’s important to see your doctor first to get a proper assessment and discuss your personal health options to find a regimen that will work for you. Do not embark upon any diet nor exercise routine before consulting your physician. If you do not have a physician, please feel free to make an appointment or walk-in to a Primary Medical Care Centers in one of Miami or Lauderdale Lakes. One of their friendly health care providers will be happy to assist you. www.PrimaryMed.com

few years ago, facing a slew of health issues, Kathy and Andy Jean were forced to make lifestyle changes. The married couple and business partners decided to take the holistic route by making a few exercise and healthy dietary changes. On their path to good health, they discovered the benefits of adding vitamin B12 to their regimen. It gave them the energy boost they needed to maximize their efforts. About a year ago, while they were well into on their health journey and getting B12 shots prescribed by their physician, they came upon a B12 Store in a mall. “We didn’t know that we could have just walked into a store and gotten it,” said Andy. That’s when the lightbulb went off. The two serial entrepreneurs knew this would be their next business venture. “We wanted to try something new and different, and to also follow the health and wellness trend,” said Kathy. “After my husband and I struggled with our weight and knew first-hand how well the B12 shots worked, it was a no-brainer.” B12 Stores have been around for about a decade and the chain has approximately 35 stores nationwide. Kathy & Andy currently hold the franchise rights to three Florida locations. Their first B12 Store opened to the public in December 2019 at the Westfield Broward Mall. The two other locations are expected to open in 2020 in Boca Raton and on the east side of Fort Lauderdale. The Jeans are proud to bring diversity to the B12 Stores franchise as their first Black franchisees, and report that they have been well received

MAKE 2020 YOUR YEAR

With TaVa Lifestyle Be Part of a Life-Changing Health Movement and Make Money While Losing Weight and Staying Healthy By Shelly-Ann M. Parkinson TaVa is the Hebrew word for ark. In the biblical story of Noah’s Ark, after the earth was destroyed by the great flood, life was replenished, two by two. This power of natural organic growth gave the earth a second chance to start over and progress. This is the principle upon which

Tava, a new health and wellness global network, is built on. This fast-moving, direct-sales, Black-owned company is led by its visionary founder and CEO, Kenny E. Lloyd. Haiti Open Magazine’s introduction to TaVa came by way of local TaVa associates Andy and Kathy Jean. Andy explained that TaVa

Lloyd took a concept and allowed it to create an ecosystem in which the strong can do great, the regular can do good, and the curious can do well, -says Andy. TaVa is clear that its statements regarding the benefits of its products have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration and that they are not intended to treat, cure, or prevent disease. Rather, the company relies on real-life testimonials from its network of users. Each person who joins TaVa posts a photo to the private social media TaVa group and tracks their journey as they progress. This private online TaVa group is an amazing resource and support group for users as they strive towards reaching their health and wellness goals. Kathy explains that the products are safe and effective. “The detox tea can be taken every day and at your own pace. This is about lifestyle change, not a quick fix. It will help you control your appetite and give you a jump-start to healthier eating habits.”

The three core products currently offered by TaVa are:

Kai A detox tea that purports to promote weight loss, ncrease mental clarity, and to detox the colon.

Within four days, the lightweight sneaker – supported with colors inspired by the uniforms worn by the leaders of the revolution, as well as the Haitian flag – SOLD OUT! Capturing the Haitian identity through an homage to Haitian independence heroes, the shoes’ creator will donate half of the profits to the August Project, in support of her aim to alleviate poverty in Leogane.

16 The Earthquake

Earthquake 2010 National Palace of Haiti Jason Derulo

Coca Cola selected Jason Derulo to create the anthem for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Gaining over 19 million view on YouTube, the song “Colors” reached listeners beyond the World Cup and made it onto the playlists of pop fans everywhere. Shot in Haiti, Jason featured La Citadelle Laferrière in Cap Haitien and artist and past presidential candidate Wycelf Jean strumming his guitar. In a press statement, Derulo said he wrote the song to break down cultural differences around the world and celebrate diversity.

As we look back at the devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake that ravaged Haiti ten years ago, we are reminded of our dreams of progress. In 2010, the lives of many Haitian citizens and tourists were taken by the natural disaster. Today, we continue to aim for improved basic infrastructure and growth within the country. Today, social media memes of “nou pap janm bliye” summon memories many sought to forget. Despite these reminders, we glimpse into the future as the current government releases plans to rebuild the national palace, setting the stage for progress in Haiti in the new decade.

HEALTHY SMILE HEALTHY LIFE By Dr. Edwin Smith, DDS

entistry is often thought of as a field of medicine primarily focused on esthetics, which makes sense when you consider the power of a smile. Not only does seeing a loved one’s smile brighten up your day, but studies show that even forcing a smile has been shown to decrease stress and even lower your heart rate. Smiling makes you feel good during your day to day activities, and taking pride in your smile can make you healthier and happier. However, the mouth is a lot more than a feel-good tool you smile with. It’s often forgotten the degree to which the mouth is integrated with the body. Systemic diseases often have oral manifestations, and oral diseases can have systemic consequences. Gum disease causes chronic inflammation, and those

whole, and the mouth is the opening to the body. Like all parts of the body that are exposed to the elements, the mouth is packed with bacteria, and the bacteria forms a sticky biofilm known as plaque. In a perfect world, we would remove the plaque by brushing and flossing twice a day and avoid sweets. But, as we all know, the world is not always perfect. In fact, dental caries is the most common disease in children, and some studies show that nearly 75% of adults have gum disease. Poor oral hygiene can allow for the overgrowth of bad bacteria in the mouth. Enough bad bacteria can lead to dental caries and gum disease in the form of gingivitis or periodontitis. Untreated periodontitis can lead to bone loss, dental pain, dental abscesses, tooth

inflammatory factors can negatively affect other chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, respiratory disease, all of which can increase your chances of heart attack and stroke. The body functions as a

they don’t fail because enough time has passed. They fail because of poor oral hygiene or poor oral and systemic health. Everyone wants a beautiful smile to make their lives and the lives of their loved ones a little better every day. The key to a healthy smile is regular brushing and flossing, and regular dental visits to catch and treat oral disease in the early stages. A healthy smile can help lead to a long, happy and healthy life.

UROLOGISTS TREAT

WOMEN WITH BLADDER AND PELVIC FLOOR CONDITIONS By Dr. Angelo E. Gousse, MD Board Certified Urologist Fellowship Trained

F

emale urology, also called Female Pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery, is a subspecialty of urology that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of urological conditions that affect the quality of life of women. Because women have a different anatomic and hormonal milieu compared to men, the urologic conditions and treatment options vary significantly. Over the past ten years, there have been significant advances in the field of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS), both in the understanding of the disease processes, as well as management options. Furthermore, strict guidelines for management have been developed, supported by evidence-based studies to guide the clinician. Common urologic conditions within the domain of Female Urology include recurrent UTIs, overactive bladder, pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, urethral syndrome, urinary fistula, interstitial cystitis (Bladder Pain Syndrome), urethral diverticula, and female urethra stricture.

WHAT IS CHRONIC URINARY TRACT INFECTION (UTI)?

Many women suffer from recurring urinary tract infections (UTIs), otherwise known as chronic UTIs. A recurrent UTI is defined as at least two infections in six months, or three infections in one year.

This condition is typically caused by a gram negative bacterial infection. In most cases, each new infection is caused by a different strain of bacteria. Common UTI symptoms include frequent urination, urgent dysuria, suprapubic discomfort, and cloudy, foul-smelling urine. More severe symptoms may include fever or chills, flank pain, nausea and emesis, typically involving the upper urinary tract (i.e., the kidneys and associated collecting systems). Patients with febrile UTIs are thought to have complicated UTIs cases and should undergo an upper urinary tract examination to evaluate the kidneys and take a more aggressive course of antimicrobial agents.

WHAT IS PELVIC ORGAN PROLAPSE?

Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a condition associated with laxity and defects in the muscles, ligaments, and skin surrounding a woman’s vagina. These anatomic weaknesses cause pelvic organs such as the uterus, rectum, bladder, urethra, small bowel or vagina to prolapse out of their normal position. There are several grading systems which illustrate the degree of POP. Cystocele (Bladder prolapse), rectocele (prolapse of the rectal wall/posterior compartment), enterocele (weakness of the cul de sac, associated with bowel and intestinal herniation), and vaginal prolapse are the most common pathologies. Often POP is more a diffuse disorder of the

74 Haiti Open | People Culture Tourism

pelvic floor and involves multiple conditions simultaneously. This condition most commonly affects older women whose pelvic muscles and tissues have been weakened or stretched by the effects of gravity, have an increased body mass index (BMI), estrogren loss, or strains from childbirth or previous pelvic surgery. Symptoms may include pelvic pressure and discomfort, sexual discomfort, and problems urinating or defecating. Numerous transvaginal, abdominal, laparoscopic, or even robotic techniques have been developed to treat pelvic organ prolapse. Recent controversies and FDA warnings in the US have diminished the usage of synthetic mesh over the past 3 years. Usage of biologic allograft, or native tissues, has become more popular. Some patients prefer a nonsurgical approach, such as the usage of pessaries. A specialist in female urology should be familiar with the various types of pessary and the surgical options.

WHAT IS URINARY INCONTINENCE?

Urinary incontinence, or involuntary leakage of urine, is one of the most common problems treated in female

«

Health Guide urology. It is important for the clinician to realize that there are several different types of urinary incontinence, each with a different cause and potential treatment options. These include stress incontinence, urge incontinence, overflow incontinence, mixed incontinence (simultaneous stress and urge incontinence), total incontinence, and functional incontinence. Improper diagnosis of the type of

incontinence is the suburethral ( midurethral ) sling. Transurethral bulking agent is another less successful and shorter-duration treatment option. The suburethral sling can be performed using a synthetic mesh or biologic allograft, or autologous rectus fascia. Abdominal procedures such as Burch urethropexy are effective but more invasive than transvaginal sling procedures. Currently, there is no approved

In severe cases of prolapse, female patients may develop bladder outlet obstruction and even swelling of both kidneys. However, many women remain free from symptoms. urinary incontinence is probably the most common reason for treatment failure. A detailed history and physical examination is of paramount importance to the proper diagnosis and sub-typing of urinary incontinence. In select cases, urodynamic testing or cystoscopy may be useful. A neurologic history and physical examination should be obtained in order to rule out a neurogenic bladder. Patients with “pure” stress urinary incontinence describe activityrelated urinary leakage that interferes with their quality of life. Any increase in abdominal pressure such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, exercising, jumping, running, or sexual activity may precipitate urinary leakage. Stress incontinence may or may not co-exist with pelvic organ prolapse. In most cases, urethral hypermobility is noted, with rotational descent of the urethra upon straining. The need for treatment is largely dictated by the degree that it affects the woman’s quality of life. Pad usage and pad weights are sometimes used to gauge disease severity. The current most popular surgical treatment to treat stress urinary

medication for stress urinary incontinence. There is no evidence that estrogen therapy is effective in the management of stress urinary incontinence. Patients with urge urinary incontinence report involuntary urinary leakage with bladder spasms and strong urges to void. Urge incontinence is one of the symptoms associated with overactive bladder. Overactive bladder is not necessarily caused by aging or prior surgery. Most cases of overactive bladder and urge incontinence are idiopathic. Urge urinary incontinence is often

associated with urinary urgency and frequent urination . A neurologic cause should always be ruled out, particularly in younger patients. Conclusion Female urologic disorders affect a large segment of the population. Female Urology, also known known as female pelvic medicine, is a broad field. The surgical techniques are varied and technically challenging. The treatment options are best dictated by an accurate diagnosis. The most successful female urologists are the most astute diagnosticians.

PREPARING FOR SURGERY

By Dr. Linda Moleon Louis + Photo by Mackinley ‘Spex’ Madhere

Preparing for a scheduled surgical procedure can be stressful. You should be physically and mentally prepared for the stress your body will endure on the operating room table, as well as the recovery after the procedure. Here are some tips that will make your preoperative journey a lot less stressful and help boost your speedy and safe recovery.

76 Haiti Open | People Culture Tourism

BEFORE SURGERY

• Have a discussion with Primary Care Physician regarding any underlying medical issues you may have, such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma, high cholesterol and other chronic diseases. • Discuss the planned surgery and how it might affect your current health and recovery. • Make sure all your medical issues are optimized. Are these conditions well controlled with your current medication regimen? • Be sure to inform your doctor of all medications, herbs and supplements you routinely take, and follow your doctor’s instruction about taking them before surgery. This is especially important if you take medications for hypertension, diabetes, and blood thinners. • Make sure you have your updated labs, EKG and Chest Xray on file. • If you have an extensive cardiac history such as a history of heart attack, cardiac surgeries/stents, chest pain or congestive heart failure, you may want to consider getting a cardiac clearance from your cardiologist. This also applies to patients with a significant history of pulmonary

«

Health Guide conditions such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea, COPD or asthma. • If you are a smoker, seriously consider quitting. Patients who are non-smokers are less at risk of having respiratory complications and infections after surgery than active smokers. • The Night before Surgery: Discuss with your anesthesiologist or preoperative team when you should stop eating and drinking before surgery. Most hospitals and surgical centers will advise patients to stop eating at midnight and will allow clear liquid drinks up to two hours before your surgery. Research

Get adequate sleep, eat a healthy diet, and if you smoke, please stop for at least two weeks prior to your surgery.

has shown that drinking clear liquids two hours before surgery reduces nausea, vomiting and pain after surgery. Examples of clear liquids: • Water • Fruit juices (without pulp) • Gatorade • Clear tea • Black coffee (no milk or cream)

ON THE DAY OF THE SURGERY

• Please be prepared to remove glasses, contact lenses, dentures, and all jewelry and body piercings. • Wear clothing that is loosefitting and easily changed. • Bring a list of all your medications, herbs and supplements, and include the full name, strength and number of times that you take these each day. • On the day of your surgery, you will meet a member of the anesthesiology team (either your CRNA or Anesthesiologist) who will gather all your information and develop an anesthesia care plan best suited for you. • They will discuss the best type of anesthesia for your specific surgery and health needs (e.g., general anesthesia, monitored anesthesia care, spinal/epidural or sedation, or regional block). • The use of recreational drugs such as alcohol, marijuana, narcotics and stimulants should be discussed thoroughly. These substances can affect how you react to anesthesia. • It’s natural to fear surgery and anesthesia. Most patients are more fearful about the anesthesia than they are of the surgery itself. If you’re afraid, feel free to discuss this with your anesthesiologist. He or she can give you information and medication to ease your anxiety and help you feel comfortable. • Bring a friend or family member who can advocate, take notes, and ask questions on your behalf before and after surgery. • Your anesthesia team will continue to care for you immediately after surgery while you recover, so ask about how your pain will be managed

and any concerns you have about the recovery process. • You will need an adult driver with you, as you will not be able to operate a motor vehicle following surgery. In preparation for your surgery, take good care of yourself and follow your doctor’s advice. Surgery puts a significant amount of stress on the body. The stronger you are physically and mentally, the better equipped you’ll be to handle it. Get adequate sleep, eat a healthy diet, and if you smoke, please stop for at least two weeks prior to your surgery. Follow your doctor’s instructions when it comes to which meds to continue and which ones to stop before surgery.

If a woman does not get pregnant after one year, a gynecologic evaluation for infertility of the couple become necessary. The origin of infertility can be maternal or paternal. You should see a doctor if your period is more than one week late during your regular cycle, or if you have taken a positive home pregnancy test. When they are pathologic, they can be cancerous or non-cancerous. Usually, surgery is indicated for treatment of the pathologic cyst. In some, cysts, even physiologic, can be complicated. The most common complications are rupture and torsion. In both cases, it is a big emergency. At TWWC, we offer treatment for ovarian cysts and most treatments are carried out via minimal invasive approaches.

18. What is an endometrial polyp? An endometrial polyp is a hypertrophy of the endometrial gland. It is very common and most of the time it is asymptomatic. In some occasions, it is associated with abnormal uterine bleeding. The presence of endometrial polyps and abnormal vaginal bleeding in post-menopausal women carries a high risk of endometrial cancer. Endometrial polyps can be suspected during a transvaginal ultrasound, but the positive diagnosis is done via hysteroscopy where the polyp can be removed and sent to pathology for examination.

FACES OF HAITI By Samuel Dameus

“Here’s the story behind the iconic Faces of Haiti TapTap t-shirt. In June 2019, while brainstorming on how to support “Konbit Bibliyotèk Site Solèy” at our annual Faces of Haiti event in Boston, our team had the brilliant idea to print t-shirts to raise money for the cause. We contacted the talented Taz, who donated his time and talent to transform one of Samuel Dameus’s TapTap pictures into vivid wearable art. Gavin St Georges from Proud T-shirt also came aboard to donate t-shirts and printing facilities to complete the circle. And just like that, what was a motivation to support a cause became a fruitful collaboration. The sale helped us raised enough money to support Konbit Bibliyotèk Site Solèy on behalf of everyone. We are proud of what we can do together when our passion for #Haiti and our desire to support each other is aligned. When you purchase a T-shirt, you support a movement.” More about these products on the Haiti Open Marketplace: HaitiOpen.com/shop

Art Beat Miami 2019

By Joann Milord + Photos by Brierre Photography & 3PM Media

N

estled between Thanksgiving and Christmas is Art Basel/ Miami Art Week. Usually held during the first week of December, the city of Miami celebrates art by opening its doors to local art collectors and those from all over the world. The event sees an influx of approximately 200,000 visitors to the greater Miami area. Once only a Miami Beach affair, Art Basel has morphed into satellite art fairs throughout the Downtown, Wynwood, the Design District and surrounding areas. In recent years, Little Haiti has emerged as an art and cultural mecca with its premier art fair, Art Beat Miami (“ABM”). A collaboration between Marie Louissaint and Joann Milord, it has become the anchor of Little Haiti’s art scene during Art Basel. Art Beat Miami is a five-day experience of art, music, food and fashion in Little Haiti’s Caribbean cultural enclave during Art Basel/ Miami Art Week. The fair, which celebrated its 6th year in 2019, had over 5,000 attendees. ABM not only provides a free space where emerging and established artists from the Caribbean and around the world can exhibit various mediums of art in the Caribbean Marketplace at the Little Haiti Cultural Center. It also provides cultural activities for locals and tourists in a familyfriendly venue. The Caribbean

Artists showcases include painters, sculptors, muralists, performers and musicians. The art fair’s collaboration with multidisciplinary artists highlights the culturally rich and diverse creativity of local artists, as well as those of the diaspora of various nations during Art Basel/ Miami Art Week. Since Art Beat Miami’s inception, over 250 individuals have participated as exhibiting artists in the fair. ABM has partnered with Haiti’s Minister of Culture to sponsor numerous visual artists to represent Haiti. For example, Carel Pedre has hosted the Chokarella “Art Beat Miami” Takeover, interviewing artists, musicians, participants and sponsors since 2017. In addition to the exhibit, ABM includes special events such as musical performances, Spice It Up Miami, Sip and Paint, Chefs of the Caribbean Celebrity Brunch, Poetic Lakay and Sew Artsy (Art on the Catwalk). Musical performances over the years have included J. Perry, Rutshelle, Mikaben, Phyllisia Ross, Belo, Lavie, Darline Desca and BIC. Culinary dishes have been created by celebrity chefs such as Chef Creole, Ron Duprat, Nadege Fleurimond, and many more. Celebrity hosts have included Singer Melky Jean, Haitian-American actor Jimmy JeanLouis, Grammy-Award winning musician Anthony Hamilton, and TV personality Demetria Lucas.

Art Beat Miami is produced by the Little Haiti Optimist Club, Welcome to Little Haiti, and the Northeast Second Avenue Partnership. For more information about Art Beat Miami 2020 – including exhibiting artist and sponsorship opportunities – please visit www. artbeatmiami.com.

Giving Dîner

en Blanc A TASTE OF HAITI By Rachelle Salnave + Photos by Ricardo Saint-Cyr - West Palm Beach

Dîner en Blanc is an international event which attracts thousands of people internationally,” Moise says. “But this year, we made a concerted effort to reach out to the Haitian-American community.

W

hat began as a welcomehome dinner party in a public park in Paris 31 years ago for François Pasquier has been transformed into Dîner en Blanc, an 80-city international chic picnic franchise. While there is a formula, which keeps the identity of the event going globally, entrepreneur Jimmy Moise and his team ensure that the dinners he hosts have a taste of his Haitian flair. Topping off the last Saturday of 2019 with a bang, over 1000 guests were bused from three counties to a secret location in West Palm Beach, Florida to participate in this exclusive pop-up event. The element of surprise is what attracts Dîner en Blanc enthusiasts worldwide. No one knew where the venue would be until an hour before the start time. With strict rules intact for the fancy picnic, the West Palm Beach guests received the memo. As instructed, diners toted everything from their china, table settings, chairs and linens, with their gourmet food tucked away in their baskets. Fashionably dressed in all-white from head to toe, everyone was eager to show off their dining décor. For the past five years, Moise has hosted the West Palm Beach, FL Dîner en Blanc (DEB), and has acquired the license for Haiti in 2019. Moise is the first HaitianAmerican to host this event in the

United States, and the second license holder in Haiti (after taking it over from original event planners, Carla Beauvais and Johanne Buteau who hosted the event from 2013-2017 in Port Au Prince). “Dîner en Blanc is an international event which attracts thousands of people internationally,” Moise says. “But this year, we made a concerted effort to reach out to the HaitianAmerican community.” By acquiring the Haiti license with his business partner Fabienne Reid, who also co-hosts the West Palm Beach and Orlando regions, they planned to use the Dîner en Blanc trademark to promote Haiti as a tourist destination by launching it in CapHaïtien in August of 2019. Reid, who was born in Haiti but raised in Boca Raton, Florida, was inspired to see her two worlds collide. “To be able to bring this Parisian-style event to Boca was a big highlight for me, and it appeared that the city appreciated it,” Reid said, after mentioning that city officials were surprised at the turnout. Those who preferred to customize their experience by ordering their dinner through Dîner en Blanc had the pleasure of enjoying the succulent, curated cuisine by Executive Chef Thia. “It was the first time in Dîner en Blanc’s history that hot meals had been approved by the franchise,” Thia explained.

According to Dîner en Blanc’s guidelines, all made-to-order dishes must be cold, because of the outdoor nature of the event. The dinner at Mizner Park Amphitheater began with the traditional sound of everyone twirling their white linen napkins. Like a Haitian spirit in the wind, everyone was on the dance floor when Haitian-American songstress Naika sang her smash hit, “Papa Gede.” Literally everyone sang the lyrics with her: Papa Gèdè bel gason (Father Geder handsome man) Gèdè Nibo bel gason (Good looking Nibo man) Abiye tout an blan, pou l'al monte o pale (Dress all in white to go to the palace) The vision brought by Moise and Reid is sure to continue to build a cross-connection between the Haitian Diaspora, Haiti, and the world by providing the international Dîner en Blanc community an opportunity to have a seat at Haiti’s table. Reservations have already opened up for Cap-Haïtien 2020. “Get ready! There will be lots of surprises,” Reid says. Rachelle Salnave is a HaitianAmerican filmmaker based in South Florida who explores race and class in Haiti and the African Diaspora through cinema.
