TIME FLIES. HaitiOpen.com turned 15 this year!

HaitiOpen.com was registered on September 20th, 2008, to help promote Haiti, its people, and to serve as a bridge between Haiti and its diaspora; a bridge that can help foster economic development in several business sectors in Haiti, and in the diaspora, from hospitality to retail to business services and more.

Many thanks to everyone who has supported us over the years. We’ll continue to do our best to be more useful for the next 15 years.

Our upcoming tech sites and apps will create technological infrastructures that will encourage better business culture, relationships, and efficiency for small businesses in Haiti and in the diaspora.

Haitians have an inherent tendency towards starting their own businesses, however small or big, in Haiti or abroad, and regardless of the obstacles. Our primary aim will be to help the small businesses that don’t have the means to reach the diaspora or the international market. We will provide them with enough tech tools and support to help them grow beyond their local area.

Sincerely,

interventions including Advanced Robotic Surgery, Laparoscopic Surgery, and Minimally Invasive Surgery. She works with high-end equipment and tools, including the da Vinci Robotic system, to provide patients with secure, effective, and painless surgeries. Her goal is to increase access to surgeries using the latest technology and provide the highest quality care for the Haitian community.

Because Dr. Semoin is young, she’s often perceived as inexperienced. But she’s been practicing for years, which has given her valuable insights into the doctor-patient relationship. The way she sees it, patients should do to ensure they receive the best possible services.

Since Dr. Semoin has been in practice in North Miami, she’s joined the Haitian-American Chamber of Commerce and received the prestigious Seventh Annual YoPros Award for being part of an exceptional group of Young Haitian-American Professionals. Her original goal was to become a psychologist, but while she was earning her qualifications to be one, she realized that medical practice resonated with her more.

Dr. Sabrine Semoin is the first board-certified Haitian female surgeon in South Florida, a successful businesswoman, and a beloved Haitian personality. Her humble beginnings and the hardships she’s endured speak

volumes about her determination, strength of character, and incredible work ethic. She relocated to South Florida in 2019 and opened a practice in North Miami Beach, where today she specializes in general surgery and offers

What sets Dr. Semoin apart from other local surgeons is that she’s a Haitian female. She can be described in one word: professionalism. She’s one of the community’s most prized assets in the medical field because her Haitian identity gives her unique insight into her patients’ cultural backgrounds. She’s proud to be an

active member of her community and takes pride in catching the attention of other active community members to bring about the changes they want to see.

Dr. Semoin can easily tap into her patients’ concerns and fears – and put them to rest. This ability is rooted in Dr. Semoin’s professionalism, her ability to understand people at the psychological level, and her Haitian ancestry. She also believes surgery may not be the only option on the table. She says it’s important for patients to discuss their options with their care provider to make sure they’re not missing any of them.

Dr. Semoin believes doctors should always speak the truth

regarding the available treatment options and only recommend a specific procedure if it’s the safest and most effective one available. This may sometimes work against a doctor’s financial interests, but the Hippocratic oath takes precedence over everything else. “I just want to make sure people know that I am here to serve them,” says Sabrine.

Dr. Semoin is the proud wife of a physician and mother to two amazing

children. Her life can be busy, but her most rewarding challenge is trying to strike a balance between her personal life and work. “It’s hard to be a businessperson, a surgeon, and a mom without support from a close circle,” she says. For her, family comes first. Her hard work is worth nothing if her family doesn’t benefit from it. Essentially, Dr. Semoin is establishing a legacy with her practice at South Florida Surgery.

A STORY OF SUCCESS AND TRIUMPH REAL ESTATE BROKER & TITLE EXPERT Sarnia Michel

Sarnia Michel is a success story in the making. She was born in PAP Haiti and worked hard to build the life she’s living today. Despite the hardships and lack of resources for women of color,

Sarnia is grateful for her life’s circumstances because they shaped her into the woman she is today. Fortunately, everything changed for her when she moved to Florida in 2000.

PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL LIFE

Sarnia’s path in life is nothing short of outstanding. Currently, Sarnia owns two real estate companies: Title Experts of South Florida and P3 Realty Group Broward.

She says her road to success was nothing short of grueling, but worth it in the end. Her toughest challenge was building her reputation in a male dominated Real Estate industry. “[The most difficult thing was] earning the community’s trust,” Sarnia says. “Once they saw the quality of the services I provide, all the skepticism disappeared. They saw that I would do everything that benefitted them and that I was fighting for them.”

Today, Sarnia has numerous satisfied clients and a Stellar reputation in the industry, which only keeps growing. Moving forward, Sarnia hopes to increase

her real estate presence and accrue an even larger database of satisfied customers. She’s confident this will happen thanks to her discipline, integrity, hard work, and highquality service.

She’s married to an influential businessman and has two boys who are also interested in her line of work. All of her efforts are directed at helping her young boys succeed and become financially independent and self-sufficient.

WHAT’S HOLDING HAITIANS BACK

When it comes to her Haitian heritage, Sarnia couldn’t be any more

grateful and proud. She knows her Haitian identity will always define who she is. However, she’s also a realist and recognizes that Haitianborn youth have few options.

Haiti is known to fare poorly in terms of security, stability, and professional opportunities, which means many young adults have close to zero prospects for a prosperous future. This is why she moved to the US to expand her horizons and open the door to new opportunities. But Sarnia says there’s hope for young Haitians because she believes they can change their lives.

It’s all a matter of faith, discipline, consistency, self-confidence, integrity,

and hard work. Everything else will follow. Her advice resonates with many Haitians who don’t see a way out of their situation. “If someone else can do it, you can do it too,” says Sarnia. “Put in the work and stick to it and you will prevail.” Sarnia believes her story is the best example of someone who started with nothing and ended up with more than somethin Sarnia’s story doesn’t end here, as she has many other plans for the future. She believes that anyone can replicate her success with a bit of luck, tons of hard work, and a solid work ethic.

HOW SARNIA HELPS HAITI

If there’s one thing that Sarnia believes can save Haiti, it would be education. Nothing is more impactful and has a bigger potential to change people’s lives than education, as knowledge truly is power. That’s why Sarnia’s support comes in the form of a non-profit that aims to help Haitian youth complete their studies and improve their chances of success as independent adults.

“Our non-profit is geared at

helping children in Haiti by providing scholarships, school supplies and meals, and constant support and guidance,” says Sarnia. She hopes her impact will last and that, with the help of those around her, she can bring about positive change in the Haitian community.

However, Haiti’s political turmoil has prevented Sarnia from providing the services that she wants to. Her hope is that things will change so that her organization can resume work and provide the much-needed help to the Haitian children.

Few things are more inspiring than the power of example. So, Sarnia uses herself as a role model and example of what hard work, dedication, and discipline can do for one’s personal and professional life. “I would like to be one of the most famous Haitian trailblazers,” says Sarnia. “And to leave a good legacy behind me.”

Haitian Couple’s Kremas Business Generates OVER A MILLION DOLLARS WITHIN 12 MONTHS

Clifford attributes the Saveurs Lakay Kremas’ success to his wife Srane and her unbreakable commitment to provide her children with a better life. That’s how it started.

THE HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

Clifford and Srane have always had a beautiful and happy family. But they haven’t always had the easiest life. Clifford remembers when they couldn’t provide their children with everything they needed to ensure a rich and carefree life, so they had to make sacrifices. Ultimately, though, that wasn’t enough – and it was Srane who decided that she’d had enough.

She was still caring for their youngest son when she realized they couldn’t provide the little boy with the things that a child his age needed. This was the beginning of Saveurs Lakay and Kremas, the way we know them today. And it all started in a small apartment.

“We started selling Kremas because my wife was pregnant with my son, our youngest, and she

needed to get stuff for the baby. She was very stressed because, at 6 months in, we didn’t have the stuff she needed to have for the baby yet, which caused us both a lot of stress and uncertainty.

“Things changed fast from that point on. An idea turned into action and action turned a business idea into reality. Saveurs Lakay started in our Dessables’ small apartment, moved to a garage, then a production warehouse, and it now hopes to take the entire world by storm,” says Clifford, recalling their tumultuous but fruitful journey.

A BRIGHT FUTURE

Srane doesn’t believe she has created a beverage, but a legacy. “Saveurs Lakay is much more than a brand. We care about Haiti and its traditions, since they were the starting point for this brand. We strongly believe Haitian Kremas sells itself through its flavorful taste and creamy texture. Haitians value a good time spent with family during holidays or festivals. Kremas is the materialization of this closeness, a cultural inheritance that lives on even today. Saveurs Lakay wants to promote Haitian culture and traditions by sweetening your life through delicious Kremas.”

“We sell these products to connect Haitians in the diaspora with quality products from back home. I want to inspire and support more young people to start selling local products. Because if I can achieve this feat today, they can also do it. Nothing is impossible if you believe in yourself and you’re ready to fight for your dreams,” says Srane.

Research has shown that one of the first things people notice when they meet someone new is their smile. If you feel you need help in that department, married dentist duo Dr. Rodlin Jerome and Dr. Belanne Estime-Jerome provide patients with healthy and confident smiles that create positive first impressions!

Both Dr. Jerome and Dr. Estime were born in Saint-LouisDu-Nord, Haiti. Dr. Jerome moved to the United States at an early age. He began his journey

to become a dentist by earning a Bachelor’s degree in Biology at Florida International University. He then completed a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at Howard

University in Washington, D.C. He later moved to New York State and finished an Advanced Education degree in the General Dentistry Postdoctoral Program at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center and a fellowship in Geriatric Dentistry at the State University of New York.

Passionate about dental implant surgery, cosmetic and orthodontic dentistry, Dr. Jerome completed his implant training with Implant Educator at the University of Florida.

Dr. Estime was born and raised in Saint-Louis-Du-Nord, Haiti. Her parents were also Haitian-born but met in Miami, Florida, in the mid-1970s. After they married each and had her older sister, they migrated back to Haiti in the mid-’80s.

Since she was young, Dr. Estime has been passionate about being a dentist. To achieve her dreams, she earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine at Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) in the Dominican Republic. Her intellectual curiosity during her travels and residences abroad made her a polyglot – she’s fluent in six languages. “Working in diverse environments daily makes my brain switch languages like the time clock,” she says.

Having found love in 2013, Dr. Estime decided to move back to the United States, where she married Dr. Jerome. To further her career and education, she revalidated her doctorate in the United States and completed a residency in Advanced Education in General Dentistry to obtain her dental license at the University of Florida. Today she is a double board-certified dentist with advanced training in cosmetic dentistry, implant dentistry, and certifications in Invisalign, Botox, and Dermal Fillers. She also knows the latest

digital dentistry technology for planning and finishing cases using digital scanners, CT scans, and Digital Smile.

Founded in 2011, Smile With Confidence provides top-quality dental care and upholds the strictest sterilization standards and safety protocols to protect patient’s health. Dr. Jerome and Dr. Estime understand that dental care can, at times, evoke anxiety. They do their best to alleviate these feelings and ensure patient comfort during every visit. As dedicated care providers, they believe patient education is essential for maintaining good oral health.

care. With experienced general dentists and hygienists dedicated to excellence, you can rest assured your smile is in the best hands. What differentiates Smile With Confidence from its competitors is the way both of its lead dentists treat their patients. Their numerous positive online patient testimonials speak for themselves. Many patients have even referred their friends and family members to their practice.

The advice Dr. Jerome would give to a young person who is trying to start their own business is to aim to provide high-quality service to a community. He feels it’s imperative to know how to execute the entrepreneurial process in the right way. Dr. Estime says to make your product or service a must-have. It doesn’t need to be new, but it does need to differ from the competition.

At Smile With Confidence, they take the time to give patients the information and resources they need to keep their smiles in great condition. You can trust their practice to provide the right guidance and the best treatment options for your smile.

At Smile With Confidence, Dr. Jerome, Dr. Estime, and their team of dental professionals are committed to providing advanced and compassionate

In his spare time, Dr. Jerome is a musician. He enjoys playing the piano. He also likes golfing, traveling with his family, being active, and helping out with community activities. For her part, Dr. Estime is a loving wife, supportive mother, good friend, and a successful entrepreneur. She enjoys socializing, doing yoga with friends, swimming, spending time with her family, traveling to experience diverse environments and people from all walks of life, and participating in missionary work in underserved communities.

CHIKTAY Bringing Spice to People’s Lives Khainna Sejour’s Chiktay

Khainna “Khai” Sejour is the latest sensation to rock the culinary scene. The Florida-based Haitian-American entrepreneur is the creator of Khai Chiktay, a brand of spicy appetiser with a rich cultural history. Khai has captured the essence of Haitian cuisine in a jar and brought it overseas to a wider audience of chefs, home cooks, and food enthusiasts of all backgrounds. Her spicy Chiktay is a hit with the local Haitian community and curious foodies looking to experience new flavours. After her initial small-scale success, the business owner wants to introduce Chiktay to even more people.

A CULINARY GAMECHANGER

Khai Chiktay currently comes in three flavours. The most popular flavour, Chiktay Arenso, is herringbased. Chiktay Mori, which contains salted fish, is a good alternative for those who look for a mellow flavour. Finally, there’s the light and neutral Chiktay Kribish, which is shrimpbased.

One thing remains true of each bottle of Khai Chiktay: its complex flavour profiles always encompass the perfect mixture of satisfying umami, tangy freshness, and tongue-tingling spice. Khai says customers can’t get

enough of the rich and spicy Chiktay experience. The brand has already amassed a small following of loyal customers, which includes chefs.

HUMBLE ORIGINS AND BIG AMBITIONS

Khai has spent some of her happiest times in the kitchen next to her mother. It was a family tradition for the two to make Chiktay on special occasions like birthdays, family gatherings, and religious holidays. But it wasn’t until the recent

pandemic that Khai was inspired to start her Chiktay business. With many restaurants and social events inaccessible due to lockdowns, the entrepreneur realised there was a new demand for novel culinary experiences. “More people started working from home and ordering in,” she says. “It was a good opportunity to try something new, and that’s where I decided to step in.”

Khai seized the opportunity to bring Haitian flavours to the local community and got to work as soon as possible. Starting with a small batch and a couple of customers, her business soon expanded to reach a sizable online clientele. The next steps in her business plan include expanding the range of Chiktay flavours and bringing the brand to supermarkets, restaurants, and an international audience.

PUTTING LOVE BACK INTO COOKING

Khai believes food is a form of art, like music, painting, and dancing. It’s a form of expression that has no language or social barriers. Everyone enjoys delicious food and trying out new dishes and flavours. That’s why she thinks Chiktay is a good way to introduce people to Haitian culture.

Starting a condiment business was the perfect way for Khai to share both her passion for food and her heritage. The entrepreneur aims to help foodies from all over the world create new experiences and memories around the dining table. She also hopes to collaborate with NGOs to contribute to bigger causes like educating youth in disadvantaged communities.

Miss Choucoune International 2024 Celebrating Haitian Culture and Beauty

Sandra Justice LLC is pleased to introduce the 2024 edition of Miss Choucoune International, an important cultural event with a decades-long tradition in the international Haitian community. The competition, organized in collaboration with Commissioner Maxwell Chambers, kicks off at the Florida Miramar Performing Art Theater at 5 p.m. on Sunday, February 4th, 2024.

The Miss Choucoune organizing team is eagerly awaiting its future participants and spectators with open arms, hoping to make the 2024 event an exciting and vibrant celebration of Haiti’s culture, art, history, and beauty.

A VOICE FOR THE HAITIAN COMMUNITY

Like every year, the Miss Choucoune International competition brings an authentic Haitian experience to the Haitian minority overseas. The event celebrates Haitian beauty and heritage in an otherwise Eurocentric culture.

Miss Choucoune is more than a title. On February 4th, she will become a symbol of cultural preservation, reminding the world of the beauty and resilience of the Haitian community. Through this platform, Haiti’s fashion trends,

artistic expressions, and cultural heritage take center stage.

MISS CHOUCOUNE - AN INFLUENTIAL CULTURAL ICON

The cultural importance of Miss Choucoune cannot be overstated. Beyond the glamour and prestige

of wearing the crown, she will have the important responsibility to give voice to the real choucoune (Marie Noel Belizaire) and also be a brand ambassador and international representative of Haitians around the world.

UPLIFTING GIRLS AND WOMEN

Young girls and women are a key target demographic of the Miss Choucoune International competition. In a world where Eurocentric beauty standards contribute to exclusion and lower self-esteem among Haitian women and other women of color, Sandra Justice LLC aims to create a space where the Haitian community can celebrate its unique and natural beauty.

MAKING HISTORY

Haiti’s women’s football team rode a bumpy road to the FIFA World Cup. It had a long and impressive run filled with numerous ups and downs. Still, it was a first for Haiti’s female-only team, as the closest the country got to worldwide recognition was in 1973, when the male team qualified for the 1974 FIFA World Cup.

History finally caught up with Haiti once more when Sherly Jeudy scored the goal her team needed to beat Canada and propel Haiti onto the world stage. This was, for all intents and purposes, a historical moment for Haiti and the women’s team and a breakthrough for Haitian sport as a whole.

Haiti Women’s FIFA World Cup Journey

THE JOURNEY

Haiti hasn’t had the easiest time on the soccer stage, especially when it comes to its female representatives. Several variables influenced the country’s road to global competitiveness in sports, including the devastating earthquake in 2010, the cholera outbreak, the country’s violent ecosystem, Yves Jean-

Bart’s sexual allegations, and, more recently, the COVID outbreak.

However, as it turned out, Haiti’s women’s team was meant for greatness. The Grenadieres managed to beat Senegal 0-4 to qualify for the FIFA World Cup. The match was lively and presented Haiti with multiple opportunities, all created by the talented team and turned to gold by Kethna Louis in minute 45, captain Nerilia Mondesir in minute 54, and Roselord Borgella in minutes 64 and 65.

This is the only World Cup the Haitian Women’s Team has ever participated in. It was an extraordinary achievement for all members of the team, and they should be proud of what they accomplished. The last two matches against Senegal and Chile were hard-fought, but the team eventually succeeded. It was a momentous occasion for everyone involved.

BEST PLAYERS OF THE HAITIAN WOMEN’S TEAM

In a sport as intense and exhilarating as soccer, there are bound to be players who excel at their craft. Such is the case with Haiti’s Women’s team. Here are five extraordinary Haitian players and how they made the foundation of its greatness:

TEAM HAITI MAKING HISTORY

Kerly Theus

Kerly Theus is the team’s goalkeeper. Born on 7th January 1999, she’s one of the younger soccer players on the team. She’s well-known for her extraordinary work ethic and energetic personality. Her skill with the ball allows her to easily pick off shots from any direction, even in one-on-one scuffles. She turns 24 this year and is more motivated than ever to keep winning with her team!

She has a true winner’s mentality and hopes to establish herself as a leading keeper in soccer. She’s also not afraid to become aggressive with opponents when a match is on the line. All in all, Kerly Theus is a superb keeper who’s saved her team from defeat on more than one occasion.

Kethna Louis

Kethna Louis is a defender extraordinaire who was formerly an attacker for the team. She’s exceptionally strong and has unwavering determination when on the field. No other player on her team can match her resilience and commanding attitude. As a defender, Kethna has a lot on her plate.

She has the remarkable ability to defend from attacks and support her team during attacks, which is nothing short of exceptional. Over the years, Kethna has become more hard-working, energetic, disciplined, and diligent in understanding the game.

Melchie Dumornay

“Not a word of a lie, Melchie Dumornay is the best player I’ve ever coached”, Amandine Miquel, the team’s coach, has said. Melchie is the youngest member of her team and arguably the best. She’s scored 11 goals in 17 league appearances and is exceptionally skillful on the field.

As a mid-fielder, her mind is always on the ball, strategizing and thinking up plays before making them a reality with magnificent poise. She’s also excellent at escaping from her marks and reacting in tight situations. Her step-overs are something to write home about, too.

Nerilia Mondesir

Born on January 17th,1998, Nerilia Mondesir is a forward and the team’s captain. Her technical skills are all on par with the best in women’s soccer, and she’s known as a penalty-box predator. That’s because 93% of her goals in the 2022/2023 seasons were scored from within the penalty box.

She’s an all-around player with no visible weaknesses. Her coach says she’s a complete modern forward who’s always there to finish the job and help her team during moments of crisis. Without Nerilia, we’re sure the team wouldn’t have reached the World Cup 2023.

Roselord Borgella

Born on April 1st,1993, Roselord Borgella is one of the team’s oldest players. She’s well-known for her performance during the Women’s World Cup qualifying campaign when she scored 13 goals in 8 matches. With that achievement, she reached the top of the Concacaf charts in one fell swoop.

At 30 years old, Borgella is an irreplaceable forward and always one of the most experienced players on the field. She’s explosive, unpredictable, and consistent with her plays. Right now, she’s doing her best to lead her team to victory and make her country proud.

When the team faced off against Senegal and Chile, the tension was through the roof. The team eventually beat Senegal without much hassle, scoring 4-0, but Chile was a tougher nut to crack. Melchie Dumornay, the team’s ace in the hole, scored two goals and won the match for her team.

This marked Haiti’s ascension to glory, as it was the first time Haiti’s women’s team had ever reached a World Cup. It reflects the ambition and determination of a country that never gives up. Despite all the hardships and difficulties, the team kept advancing – and it eventually paid off!

Bertrhude Albert Ph.D. & Haiti’s Fight for Water

Haiti and the Dominican Republic (DR) have never been on excellent terms, but the situation has become even more volatile since September. The

reason for the current dispute is the Massacre River, which the Haitian people intend to use to build a water canal to provide much-needed water to Haitian farmers.

The measure is meant to counteract the effects of the drought and the farmers’ poor access to reliable water sources. Such a measure would boost the economy and support local agriculture, but things are never as easy as they seem. Haiti’s attempt to begin the construction of the canal was met with an unbending and less-than-friendly attitude from the Dominican Republic government.

The reason? The measure “… violates several border treaties between the two nations which share the island of Hispaniola”, according to an official DR statement.

WHERE IT ALL STARTED

Republic goes back almost 100 years, ever since Rafael Trujillo, the Dominican dictator, forced all Haitian farmers without official titles living on the Dominican bank to return to the Haitian one. The measure essentially forced the farmers to leave their homes and land. Naturally, few obeyed the order.

As a result, Trujillo sent the army to “assist” those too stubborn to leave, which resulted in a bloodbath. Over 20,000 Haitians died during the event, which remains a stain on DR’s history to this day. The DRHaitian border was only reopened during Salvador Jorge Blanco’s presidency, who managed to reignite the relationship between the two states.

The situation was aggravated once more this September when Dominican President Luis Abinader again chose to close the border over the canal dispute.

HOW IT’S GOING

Al Jazeera offers firsthand reports on-site, and the situation is

appearing to grow desperate by the hour:

“It is a scene that repeats itself at the Dominican Republic border town of Dajabon twice a day: A queue of Haitians fills the street, trailing across a couple of blocks and ending at a crossing where soldiers are stationed.

From there, they cross a border bridge on their way home to Haiti, the country with which the Dominican Republic shares an island.

They come carrying mattresses, clothes baskets, suitcases, and cardboard boxes. Anything that can hold the possessions they’ve built up during a stay that for some has lasted for years in the Dominican Republic.

They’re going voluntarily. Sort of. Most of the Haitians that we spoke to say they have faced pressure or harassment from Dominican security forces to leave.

Their departure coincides with not just renewed but increased tensions between the two countries.”

According to ABC NEWS and

Between Monday and Friday, Haitians cross the bridge between Ouanaminthe and Dajabòn, where they generate between $1.2 to $1.5 million weekly in revenue for DR merchants, according to a 2019 Haiti Libre article.
The measure is meant to counteract the effects of the drought and the farmers’ poor access to reliable water sources. Such a measure would boost the economy and support local agriculture, but things are never as easy as they seem. Haiti’s attempt to begin the construction of the canal was met with an unbending and less-thanfriendly attitude from the Dominican Republic government.

several other news outlets, authorities in the Dominican Republic say they recently arrested an immigration agent accused of raping a Haitian woman in a detention cell at the country’s main international airport in the presence of her 4-year-old son.

Furthermore, Haitian migrants living in the DR claim they face violence and discrimination from the official security forces. Some have been thrown out of their living spaces, children included, in the middle of the night. Many are deported, as the Haitian-DR border is open one way – to Haiti. This causes massive problems for Haitians who come to DR for food for their families that they cannot procure at home.

What’s worse, neither the army representatives nor those of the immigration ministry have come forth with any official statements. Both institutions have declined to comment on the issue, but President Luis Abidaner has been loud and clear: “If there are uncontrollable people there, they will be uncontrollable for the Haitian government, but they will not be uncontrollable for the Dominican

government. The entire border of the Dominican Republic, land, sea, and air, will be closed for as long as necessary”, says France 24.

The President’s stance comes as no surprise given his strong antiHaitian stance, which has become apparent since he rose to power. That and the fact that, according to the UN, Haiti’s capital, Port-auPrince is almost entirely under gang control and plagued with gang-related violence such as kidnappings, armed robbery, and so on. Some believe that this, paired with the massive influx of Haitian migrants, might spark economic and social problems in the Dominican Republic.

HAITI'S FIGHT FOR WATER

As President of Projects of Haiti, Inc., and CEO of P4H Global (formerly Projects for Haiti), Bertrhude has extensive experience and insight into what’s troubling Haitian society. Her activity and social involvement showcase as much. Bertrhude uses her influence to rally people to her cause – and has done so with great success so far.

Her organization received tens of thousands of dollars in donations, which she used to deliver food and goods for canal workers and security personnel on-site. The more than $80,000 in donations also bought over six tons of iron and 1,000 sacks of cement to support the construction of the canal.

“This has all been possible because of your generosity,” Bertrhude wrote in an Instagram post to her supporters. “So, on behalf of all involved in the movement, the planning committee, the workers, the organizers, thank you! To ensure the highest level of transparency and accountability, every aspect of your support is being made public. As it should be!”

The President has used this rhetoric, along with Haiti’s violation of the border treaty, to close the borders completely.

BERTRHUDE ALBERT AND THE FIGHT FOR HAITI’S SOUL

Bertrhude Albert is one of the most vocal and influential supporters of the Haitian cause and her Instagram account is the tip of her spear. She immigrated to the United States when she was 8 years old but remembers her native land clearly in her mind and heart. And it shows. Bertrhude uses all of her influence and visibility to gain support and momentum for a cause she considers just and right.

Most importantly, Bertrhude doesn’t do everything from behind a screen, from the comfort of her home desk. She goes boots on the ground to get the pulse of the situation. She meets people, organizes group trips, personally oversees the delivery of goods, and speaks with officials and those involved in the construction of the canal on site.

This gives her firsthand experience of what’s going on and how things are progressing so she can make informed decisions and keep all those involved in her charity work in the loop.

Going forward, Bertrhude is confident her cause will prevail. “This is about much more than just a canal,” she says. “This is an agricultural revolution. Haiti has been destabilized by international policies, and now Haitians are fighting to be self-sufficient once more. The canal symbolizes our fight for survival. Kanal la p ap kanpe.”

By November of 1798, Toussaint Louverture was the uncontested powerbroker in the French colony of Saint Domingue, today’s modern-day Haiti. Toussaint had brilliantly defeated the Spanish army, squashed the British invasion, vanquishing them from the territory, and had risen to the highest command in the French Colonial Government as its Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief.

Toussaint was now responsible for the livelihood and protection of nearly 600,000 citizens of which 500,000 were newly freed slaves who needed employment. Compounding the challenges was a depleted treasury from the ravages of war, a stalled economy that needed to reignite - once the most productive in the world producing 60% of the world’s coffee, and 50% of the planet’s sugar along with several other commodities - defend the colony against foreign aggression and calm the internal conflicts between the Black, Mulatto and White population.

But Toussaint had a problem. The United States had made it illegal to trade with France or any French colony due to a dispute. France and America, who not long ago shared brotherly love from France’s economic and military assistance during the American Revolution, were no longer getting along. The Americans had stopped paying their war debt claiming the deal was made with King Louis XVI whom the French government had ceremoniously beheaded! Further infuriating France was that the new country was cozying up to its arch-rival, Great Britain, once America’s enemy! Merde they claimed!

By treaty, France couldn’t go to war with America as it would legally void the war debt so they recruited French Privateers (Pirates) plying the waters around Saint Domingue to attack American merchant vessels trading with French colonies. In all, over 300 American vessels were either sunk or stolen during the conflict named the ‘Quasi War’.

America retaliated and made it illegal for American merchants to trade with France or any of its colonies. With Saint Domingue being the most active of France’s trading posts for the Americans, Toussaint now had an export crisis and an import supply chain nightmare on his hands.

At the time, John Adams was the second President of the United States, and an abolitionist who respected Toussaint and his new black government, even secretly hoping they would become independent from France, albeit to the opposition of the American Southern slave states who feared that Toussaint would export the ‘Free The Slave’ franchise to the United States of America.

Toussaint saw an opportunity. He knew the Americans wanted to trade with his colony so he crafted a proposal for Adams and sent a trade envoy to negotiate a deal.

Joseph Bunel, a White French Creole businessman married to Marie Fanchette, a black Creole woman, traveled to Philidelphia in December of 1798 to negotiate secretly with then Secretary of State Thomas Pickering and members of the American Congress.

Bunel proposed a deal that would protect American shipping, rein in the French pirates, go after those who had stolen American vessels, and agree to never export Haiti’s slave revolt to the U.S. Southern states.

In exchange, Adams would open trade with the colony, have U.S. vessels pay local taxes, and begin diplomatic relations with Toussaint’s semi-autonomous French colony. The legislation was masterfully engineered through Congress to provide Adams the authority to select Saint Domingue as a safe haven for American trade allowing the two leaders to create a common market system.

Slave-holding Southern states howled at the legislation and immediately labeled it “Toussaint’sClause” as it was obvious that it was created to benefit Saint Domingue, which it did, as a thousand American vessels re-entered trade with the colony ushering a new era of prosperity for both America and Haiti (Saint Domingueatthattime).

So, what lessons can we learn from this story? The most important is that Toussaint Louverture did not go to John Adams with his hat in hand begging for assistance. He went as an equal partner to the American President and pitched a strong win-win proposition that would equally benefit his colony and the United States. A true statesman, he was able, at the time, to maneuver the British, the French, and in this case the Americans, to diplomatic initiatives in favor of his people.

When Adventure Meets Courage Emeline Francois

Emeline Francois is a free spirit unlike any other. Her undying passion for traveling and discovering the world is unmatched and has guided every step in her life. Born in France, she carries her French spirit and influence wherever she goes, and she hopes to spread her charm far and wide. “My biggest goal is to travel the entire world and discover all countries and cultures, one by one.”

One could think this might be too large a dream, but Emeline is neither frail nor sensitive. She’s a force of nature and her personality, background, and goals are quite telling in this sense.

EDUCATION AND WORK

Emeline earned a degree in communications and continued her studies in BTS accounting before moving to England to hone her English skills. Her current occupation revolves around crypto investments, live trading, and real-estate crowdfunding. But she’s aiming higher than that.

Empathetic at heart, Emeline dreams of joining a humanitarian organization to travel around the African continent to bring about positive change in poverty-stricken countries and regions. She thinks she has all the tools to succeed, including experience, determination, a kind heart, and a magnificent presence, whose glow alone is enough to bring about positive vibes.

PERSONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS

She’s especially proud of her several voyages around countries like Egypt, Kenya, India, Colombia, Mexico, and Panama. These are considered dangerous, crime-ridden countries that are particularly dangerous for solo female travelers. Her trips stand as proof of Emeline’s courage, determination, and unbreakable demeanor.

These traits are even more obvious if we consider that she also parachuted from a plane flying at 4,100 meters. The daring jump is further proof of her adventurous nature and need to live at a high intensity.

THOUGHTS ON YOUNG HAITIANS AND HOW SHE CAN IMPROVE HAITI

Emeline believes Haitians should be more open-minded and share their culture and values with the world more. “Unfortunately, Haiti is still very little known to the world. Many people living in neighboring countries don’t even know about Haiti and couldn’t even locate it on the map.”

As Emeline sees it, this is a problem, given Haiti’s rich history, unique charm, and amazing culture and vibe. Fortunately, Emeline has a plan to correct this problem. She is currently actively sponsoring Haitian children to help them get easier access to education and a better life. She donates clothes and money and raises awareness about the poor conditions they live in. She also urges influencers to use their visibility to bring light to the Haitian culture, which alone can become a force for good.

HER TALENTS AND STRENGTHS

Emeline sees herself as a chameleon who is capable of handling any situation, no matter how novel or difficult. She can adapt to any culture, circumvent any problem, and overcome any obstacle in her path. “I generally blend in with all decors. I have no difficulty adjusting to a way of life different from mine. Sleeping in a tent without much comfort, for example, is not a big deal.”

“My biggest goal is to travel the entire world and discover all countries and cultures, one by one.”

been easy, but it’s been rewarding and transformative. He says his early years in Haiti shaped his

Ricardo believes hardship builds character and helps an individual become resilient and self-sufficient. But enduring nothing but hardship isn’t beneficial either, which is why he has a lot to thank his mother for. She supported and inspired him to become a better professional and human being, which allowed him to change his life in several positive ways.

one day.” He remained faithful to that dream, and today he’s pursuing a career as a chef.

Even so, Ricardo believes his greatest accomplishment is becoming a father, a role which he feels completes him like nothing else. He has a clear vision of the future: “My personal goal is being able to challenge myself, and my career goal is to open my own restaurant one day. I tend to accomplish things by planning what I need to do. I want to have to have my own epis and pikliz in five different states and also get my business credentials.”

Ricardo knows he has a long and strenuous road ahead of him, but he believes nothing is impossible if one is talented and determined.

WHAT HAITIAN YOUTH CAN LEARN FROM RICARDO

Ricardo doesn’t claim he should be seen as a role model, but he believes that young Haitians with no purpose in life can learn a thing or two from him. That’s because, just like them, he too had a rough upbringing and came from nothing. And he managed to turn his life around through the power of faith, self-confidence, optimism, and hard work. And everybody can follow in his footsteps.

“I try to encourage the Haitian youth to stay strong,” says Ricardo. “If there’s a will, there’s always a way. God has something in store for all of us.” If he could speak to the masses, Ricardo would offer them a simple, but life-changing advice: “I

would like to impact people to give. The more you give, the more you shall receive. I would discuss ways we should help one another and talk about Haiti and ways we can help each other move forward.”

Ricardo believes progress is the result of shared goals and effort, and that nobody can succeed in life without support from others, whether it’s family, friends, or anyone interested in helping them. Although he’d made a small impact today, Ricardo hopes to one day change that and improve his online reach and visibility. He hopes this will not only change people’s lives, but his own, give him more freedom of expression, and help him improve as a human being.

EDUCATION AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Johyko attended Florida Atlantic University’s bachelors program in Criminal Justice, which allowed her to refine her sense of justice, order, and the concept of fairness. This is one of the main reasons for her breakthrough as a manager for a Fortune 500 corporation and a driver for her company, Opulent Occasions by Johyko, LLC, an event planning and hosting company. It’s one of Johyko’s biggest steps towards gaining financial security and independence.

But her most-prized goal is to represent and spread Haitian culture. That’s closer to her heart than anything else.

Amos Exume was born in Portau-Prince and lives in Haiti, something he’s both conflicted and happy about. Amos comes from a single-parent family, which is typical in Haiti. He says he owes everything to his mother, who looked after him when he was young. He believes the numerous hardships he suffered during his upbringing contributed to making him a stronger and more resilient person.

He draws his main inspiration in life from his mother and those who have succeeded in life before him. Amos sees the life as a game – one where mistakes matter. But it matters more how you recover and learn from them, he says. Being Haitian influences his character and mentality because “Being Haitian means many things,” he says. “But two of them are always repeated: our strength and our history.”

Work and Future Goals

Although he’s completed his formal education, Amos believes the quest for knowledge should never end. He believes you should always strive to become a better version of yourself, more knowledgeable and competent, so you’re always ready for whatever life throws at you.

That’s why Amos is always eager to learn new things and ready to specialize in new areas.

CYNDIE LUNDY’S RISE IN THE WORLD OF ACTING

Cyndie Lundy was born in Haiti and moved to Santo Domingo in 2010. Since her early years, life on the stage has had a peculiar attraction to her. The idea of playing a role and being in the spotlight while making a career out of it sounded like the perfect dream to her. And it wasn’t a faraway dream either: she landed the role of Marie in the 2021 film Hotel Coppelia. That appearance propelled her acting career forward, as the same director asked her to act in one of his upcoming movies, Perejil or Parsley. In September 2022, Cyndie won the Outstanding Performance Award at the Oldenburg Film Festival for that movie. This success cemented her determination to keep going and never give up on her dream.

PROFESSIONAL LIFE & GOALS

Cyndie recently starred in El Vendedor de Arte, a movie released in the Dominican Republic. She doesn’t seem to have problems getting roles. She says she’s drawn to projects “with passion, the types of movies that make my heart flutter and touch a chord in my soul.”

One of her main goals is to become a celebrated actress in the Haitian community. In a way, she may have already accomplished that goal, but she says it’s still not enough. Making her name and gaining fame to make Haiti proud is what drives her. She wants to give back to the community

that birthed and raised her and enabled her to become the strongwilled woman she is today.

ADVICE TO THE HAITIAN COMMUNITY

Cyndie encourages young Haitians to never give up on their dreams and

to remember that perseverance and consistency are what differentiate winners from losers. “I was also in a situation where everything worked against me,” she says. “No one trusted in my abilities and dreams. I had to make it all by myself through my own efforts.”

Cyndie’s life choices are a result of her determination and belief in the idea that you are the architect of your own life. You might fail and might never achieve your goal, but it’s imperative that you do everything to achieve it. The journey, if not the goal, will teach you important lessons. Plus, you’ll likely discover numerous other opportunities along the way.

In her view, young Haitians should not be distraught by the apparent difficulty of being successful. No matter what they want from life, they should forge ahead with determination and courage. “If you keep trying and don’t give up, you’re already ahead of most other people who have given up.”

Future Goals and Aspirations

Right now, Cyndie wants to focus on her professional career more than anything else. There’s time for other things later, she says. She wants to act in more films, gain experience, and make a name for herself in Hollywood. Most importantly, she wants the Haitian community to recognize her films and take pride in her work.

She’s not doing it solely for her community, but for herself as well. Cyndie wants to excel at her craft, and she’s passionate about what she’s doing. It would be beneath her to settle for anything less than

a stellar performance. Her acting in Parsley has already earned her some recognition, but she wants more. She has more to learn about good acting, and she’s in the perfect position to do it!

This is key, given that people usually assess Samantha based on her Haitian heritage and the color of her skin. So, she must battle stigma and false assumptions at the same time.

EDUCATION, WORK, AND FUTURE GOALS

Samantha studies marketing and public relations at CEDI (the Center of Diplomatic and International Studies), but she’s between jobs right now, waiting for the perfect opportunity. That’s because, although she’s proficient at marketing and public relations, these are not career paths she intends to pursue.

Haiti Open | People Culture Tourism 58 «

Instead, Samantha would prefer to follow her passions, which include cooking and modeling. She wouldn’t say no to either field. “It’s like living in two different worlds for me,” she says. “I’m a model who’s passionate about cooking. I love to cook. It’s one of my biggest dreams to see my name in magazine headline like, “Samee, the model who cooks.”

ABOUT HAITI AND HAITIANS

Samantha knows that being a Haitian and living in Haiti can be a full-time job. Average Haitians endure far greater hardships than people in many other countries simply because of the challenging social and economic context. Samantha admits that, however much she loves her country, Haiti is

the model who cooks.”

a tough nut to crack. Lack of security, stability, and economic opportunity make life a struggle.

Despite all this, Samantha believes there are ways to become successful in an environment like this. In her view, there are four requirements young Haitians must satisfy to improve their chances for success in life: education, a positive mindset, self-confidence, and support. These things helped change Samantha’s life, so she believes they are a recipe for success.

Samantha herself does her fair share to support young Haitians who are looking for a better life. Part of this work involves giving kids the necessary items for school and inspiring them to continuously push their limits.

And there’s another thing Samantha believes is worth

discussing: depression. She believes many young Haitians are predisposed to depression because of the harsh conditions they’re raised in and because many of them grow up in single-parent homes. This is why she’d like to raise awareness about depression and mental health and highlight the importance of having a supportive and stable home environment.

HOBBIES AND PASSIONS

Samantha loves to cook, eat, pose in front of the camera, and sleep. She enjoys the little things in life and wouldn’t change them for anything. She also hopes to turn her passions into lucrative occupations, but she knows it will take time, effort, and consistency – requirements she’s always ready to meet.

Acting Done Right with YVELINE MOLIN

Yveline Molin is the perfect representation of a genuine Haitian. She was born in Portau-Prince and moved to Atlanta, GA, where she lives today. Yveline doesn’t have specific role models other than her family, but she admires people who know what they want and fight for it. “A person that’s able to come from the bottom and still go for a dream and achieve it, inspires me. No matter the industry. I always think, if they can do it, what’s my excuse?”

Yveline admits that growing up as a Haitian and moving to the States confused her identity. As she says, mixing traditions and cultures can sometimes result in an identity crises. “You’re trying to figure out who you are in both cultures, while the faint adult voices of your parents are lingering in the back of your mind.”

But the culture clash didn’t stop Yveline from adapting, forming clear goals, and an even clearer understanding of who she is and where she needs to go in life.

EDUCATION, WORK, ACCOMPLISHMENTS, AND GOALS

Yveline Molin graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations and Advertising from Liberty University. She’s currently working as an actor and executive assistant in a corporate environment. She’s used to this type of work, but is aiming higher. She hopes for a breakthrough in the entertainment industry that will allow her to expand her acting skills, which would give her the most satisfaction.

She already has the experience to come with it, as she’s worked on several TV shows and films, so it’s no surprise that she hopes to start producing and writing her own films as soon as possible, preferably within the next year.

Yveline also hopes to become a role model for young Haitians who lack a clear direction in life. By doing so, she hopes to motivate them and help them focus their energy in the right direction.

A VIEW OF THE FUTURE

Yveline has many passions and talents, including photography, event planning, and writing, and she hopes to grow her skills in these areas as soon as possible. And that’s not all. Yveline believes that if her abilities and skills can improve her life, she can also use them to improve the lives of those around her.

As a Haitian, she focuses on Haitian communities plagued by poverty and lack of opportunity, as these places need the most help. And she’s already making tangible steps in this direction: “My husband and I mentor and teach youth and young adults at local Haitian churches. Giving back is always an option, as is bringing our resources and talents to the communities around us.”

Yveline would also like to have an online platform she can use to convey her message, which she says would be imbued with calls to faith and self-improvement. Yveline hopes to present her content through her own cultural lens, because, above all, she’s Haitian through and through.

A Multi-Talented Presence CHRISTEL SAINT-FORT

Christel Saint-Fort considers herself to be a pure Haitian in heart and spirit. Her life hasn’t been easy, but recent years have shown her that nothing is out of reach for those who work hard. Christel is thankful for the talent and unbreakable spirit she was born with and always honors these gifts by embracing a strong work ethic.

Christel is a law student, but she plans to use other her qualities to their fullest to achieve her life goals. As a result, at 24 years of age, Christel is a singer, songwriter, model, and online influencer who hopes to increase her visibility and reach as much as possible in

the coming years.

She also hopes to prioritize her modeling career, as she suspects she has the looks, talent, and presence to do it. “I think I am the embodiment of Haitian beauty,” she says. Christel aims to carry her Haitian legacy with her and use it to her best advantage –something she’s confident will eventually happen.

Christel’s ultimate goal is to break into the modeling world, but she wants to become better at everything she does, including her singing. She wants to travel the world, experience new cultures, and become

financially and professionally independent.

She’s aware of the hard work that will be necessary to reach her goals, but she’s ready for it. Christel knows that nothing in life is free and has no unreasonable expectations. It all comes down to effort, discipline, and vision. And she has all of them.

Christel believes anyone can follow in her footsteps because her path is not unique. She hasn’t had special opportunities or a privileged lifestyle. Rather, everything she has is the result of a supportive family and her determination to change her life for the better. As Christel puts it: “I believe I can encourage other black girls to love, accept, and believe in themselves a little more every day.”

Christel believes that being Haitian, black, and a woman poses a triple challenge – but also that commitment to one’s goals will always break through any obstacles. That’s why she plans to become a role model for others, especially young girls coming from broken families and unsuitable environments.

She believes she can make a positive change in others’ lives by becoming the best version of herself and serving as an inspiration. She’s already making solid progress toward that goal.

Health and Beauty with JENIPHER TOUSSAINT

Jenipher Toussaint sees herself as an ambitious, energetic, and positive-charged woman with larger-than-life goals and a unique vision of the future. Haitian-born, she currently lives in New York, so she’s aware of the cultural differences between her native country and her adoptive one. These cultural changes have allowed Jenipher to shape her view of the world and given her a deeper understanding of what makes societies function.

Although she lives away from her home country, Jenipher can never forget where she started her journey. “It makes me feel proud to be a Haitian, and it makes me want to show the world what kind of country Haiti really is. In a way, it makes me want to make an impact on my country in some way.”

WORK, GOALS, ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Jenipher currently works full-time in customer service, but she also takes on weekend modelling gigs. These allow her to express her personality and physical talents, which she’s confident will open doors for her in the future. You can quickly tell that Jenipher knows exactly what she wants in life: “I want to be a successful model and entrepreneur, modeling for some well-known brands and managing my own businesses.”

When it comes to personal

accomplishments, Jenipher has a lot to talk about. Her biggest coup was her ability to overcome her depression, which started a new era in her life. This allowed her to unleash her full potential and explore the opportunities that awaited her, which is why she eventually started her own skincare business.

She hopes to capitalize on her newfound strength of character and determination. “I want to prioritize my mental health, build myself into a brand, heal my inner child, and open a recreation center in Haiti. I also want to learn more about the business world so I can properly build and relaunch a successful business.”

A MESSAGE FOR THE YOUNGER GENERATIONS

Jenipher doesn’t shy away from detailing her battle with depression and mental health, and she uses her experience in this area to motivate young Haitians. “I want to shed light on the importance of mental

health in young Haitian women,” she says. “It’s important to take care of yourself, to speak good things into yourself and into the world. Simply being kind and joyful can go a long way.”

She also acknowledges that any type of change within the Haitian culture can only come from the

newer generations. Their energy, positive thinking, and determination are the only things that can catapult Haiti onto the world stage in terms of education, opportunities, and cultural impact.

Jenipher Toussaint hopes to make an impact in this sense – and have fun while doing it.

A Family Man’s Success Story LESLIE MARCELIN

Leslie Marcelin was born and still lives in Miami, FL, yet his spirit holds still some of that Haitian magic that keeps shaping the way he views the world. Leslie believes Haiti has a unique presence on the world stage because the country stands “as a powerful reminder of what could happen when people and nations come together to pursue a common goal.”

As a strong, independent, and mature individual, Leslie has big goals in life. One of them is to get married, which will give him even more energy and determination to improve himself and his family’s lives. His kids play a fundamental role in this area, providing him with continuous energy and a positive vibe every day.

ABOUT LESLIE MARCELIN

Leslie describes himself as an industrious, intelligent, and talented individual who has a lot to offer his family, inner circle, and community. He’s athletic and leads an active lifestyle that revolves around playing with his kids, golfing, and traveling as often as possible.

He’s also a cerebral individual who’s preoccupied with understanding human behavior and always looking for ways to benefit his community. One of his main drives in life revolves around men’s health issues. As Leslie sees it, men everywhere are suffering a mental health crisis, especially in the US. Part of that comes from their inability to acknowledge and control

their emotions, a quality that he says is partly to blame for violent surges across the nation.

Leslie believes teaching men how to manage their emotional impulses will ultimately result in a safer and flourishing society. This is why he’s created a non-profit organization, Project Men Youth Mentoring, which supports his goals and touches as many lives as possible.

EDUCATION AND WORK

Leslie Marcelin is a jack of all trades, as he studied biological sciences at Florida Atlantic University and engineering and biomedical sciences at Nova Southeastern University. He currently works as a biomedical engineer.

“I love what I do, and I wouldn’t want to do anything else.” But this doesn’t mean Leslie he doesn’t have other goals. One of them is helping

young Haitians and men in general overcome their faults and stigmas and become better versions of themselves. That’s because a nation with strong, healthy, and confident men is one that will make a positive mark in the world.

Which is why Leslie is the Executive Director of Project Men Youth Mentoring, where he goes above and beyond to live up to his values.

WHEN TALENT MEETS WILLPOWER NAËSHA JOANNA

Naesha Joanna is an American with a Haitian heart. She currently lives in the US, but she can never forget her humble beginnings because she credits Haiti with giving her much of her potential and the career opportunities she enjoys today.

Naesha admits that being Haitian isn’t easy, as Haitian society is unsafe and has often few opportunities to offer. But she believes people can

overcome their situations, no matter how bad they might be, so long as they work, keep their eyes on the prize, and never give up. Which is exactly what she did.

EDUCATION AND WORK

Naesha graduated from the University of Montreal with a diploma in Criminology in April 2023. She is a certified paralegal, although this isn’t an avenue that she considers worth pursuing. Not because it wouldn’t be financially rewarding, but because Naesha considers herself a talented individual with a predilection toward entertainment and art. It’s no wonder, then, that she’s lately gravitated toward comedy, acting, singing, and social media. She owns an online boutique where she sells wigs, durags, and bonnets, and plans to pursue her entrepreneurial career even more in the coming years.

Naesha has been featured in three movies since 2022, including one called Jimanie. She also hosted a comedy show in May 2023 that opened the door to more potential gigs in the entertainment industry. Naesha aims to stay on the same path and grow her brand as much as possible.

She wants to improve her acting – even make it to Hollywood if possible – and perhaps her dancing and singing skills.

HOW HAITIAN YOUTH CAN REPLICATE HER SUCCESS

Naesha is aware of the problems that plague Haitian society. These include poverty, lack of opportunity, violence, and single-parent families that fail to provide children with adequate support and security. However, this doesn’t mean every young Haitian is doomed to fail.

Naesha believes there are ways that those born in environments like that can succeed –and her life story exemplifies that. She hopes to become a role model for those less fortunate. “I want to inspire

others to be proud of who they are and to always follow their dreams, no matter how hard it gets. That’s because the same God who placed the dreams in your heart will give you the resources and the strength to realize them.”

In Naesha’s view, it all comes down to hard work, strength of character, determination, and faith, because you cannot succeed in life without these assets. These days, she’s focused on building a more prominent online presence and making her dreams come true. And she hopes she can encourage people to follow suit and open themselves to new possibilities.

Law Student’s Dreams

Mitzy Jastram A

Mitzy Jastram considers herself to be a strong, independent woman who’s been heavily influenced by her mother. Mitzy sees her mom as a role model who gave her valuable lessons and guidance. Mitzy was born in Port-au-Prince and moved to Florida to pursue her dreams.

Her Haitian heritage is apparent in her attitude, personality, and awareness. Mitzy realizes her life is undoubtedly difficult, partly due to her skin color and partly because of her status as an immigrant. “To be honest, being a Haitian living in America and being seen as an immigrant opened my eyes to how I need to work ten times, if not a hundred times harder than everybody else, just because I’m black and Haitian.”

But this doesn’t discourage her from chasing her goals. As she says, her Haitian blood guides her every move and thought.

EDUCATION AND WORK

Mitzy studied law at Universite Notre Dame d’Haiti and received a Child Psychology Certificate from Penn Foster University. Her education has opened several work and development avenues, as she loves both fields.

She works at SHISHA Lounge every other week, but never loses sight of her higher goals. She says

her most prominent achievement so far has been taking part in the Let’s Talk Back show between 2019-2020, which allowed Mitzy to showcase her outgoing and charming personality and gave her the confidence she needed to communicate and make friends. This will serve her well in life as a Haitian whose goal is to integrate into American culture.

socialization. As a free and calm spirit, Mitzy is often the soul of these events, charming everyone with her unique and vibrant presence.

But recreational activities take only a part of her time. Her main occupation is self-improvement, whether via education or work, as she’s involved in several projects.

GOALS IN LIFE

Mitzy is a talented, hard-working, and resourceful woman who has created multiple avenues for herself. Nothing is out of reach, as she displays a variety of talents, including article writing, hairdressing, dancing, and modeling. One of her drives in life is to help Haitian communities and support younger people on their way to building a better life for themselves and their families.

Mitzy believes addressing mental health issues among the lowerincome population is one of the first steps that must be taken to improve their livelihoods. Especially when it comes to teenagers at the start of their journey. Her words are more telling than anything: “I would like the victims’ voices to be heard and hopefully to change some conceptions about mental health.”

HOW SHE SPENDS HER TIME

Mitzy loves to dance, walk on the beach, swim, watch and play soccer, listen to music, and take photos. She hosts events and parties from time to time for a dose of dopamine and

COSMETICS & MODELING WITH ROSENA AUGUSTIN

Rosena Augustin was born and still lives in Gonayiv, where she works relentlessly to improve her visibility and work towards her life’s goals. She believes life as a Haitian is hard, especially for someone who has higher goals in life. She aims to become a model and draws most of her inspiration from Eden Berandoive, as well as her Haitian heritage.

Despite her difficult life in Haiti, she never loses hope, as she considers herself optimistic, positive, and a free spirit. She also believes in the value of hard work and that hard work will eventually pay off. It all comes down to determination, patience, and resilience. “What affects me the most as a Haitian is the lack of opportunities. But that doesn’t

stop me from being optimistic and believing that as long as someone works, they can expose their talent and prove their worth to the whole world.”

EDUCATION, WORK, AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Rosena completed her classical studies degree at College Peniel des Gonaives and College Adventistes des Gonaives. She also studied Computer Science with the goal of making a profession out of it. In the meantime, though, she focuses on her true assets: her amazing physical presence, charm, and unique Haitian vibe that comes about so rarely.

This is why she currently works as a model and ambassador for various companies, whenever the opportunity arises. This allows her to expand on her natural gifts and work to improve her social presence and confidence.

Rosena sees her entry into the modeling world as one of her biggest and most important achievements. Not because it was necessarily difficult, but because it was scary, especially for someone with self-confidence issues who’s

never been in the spotlight before. But as Rosena puts it: “I hesitated a lot, but I eventually decided to launch because I became aware that success is for those who dare.”

This was just her first step towards success. Since then, Rosena has opened her own business and been nominated for the Top100 in the Open Haitian challenge. The way she sees it, her journey has just begun.

LONG-TERM GOALS

Rosena has set her goals over the course of many years and works relentlessly to achieve them. These goals include becoming a worldclass model, moving into the world of cosmetics, and taking her business to the next level. These goals require an unparalleled level of commitment, self-improvement, confidence, and work. Rosena thinks nothing is beyond her reach.

That’s why she works around the clock to better herself. She reads a lot in her spare time because “knowledge is the basis of success”, and she spends time with her friends, goes camping, and visits other places as often as she can. Rosena Augustin always stays true to her nature, which is to be as outgoing and friendly as possible. In her view, this will help her connect with people, empathize with their problems, and become a role model for the younger generation.

Bernadette Toussaint The Profile of a Successful Entrepreneur

Bernadette Toussaint considers herself as a true Haitian with a big heart and even bigger dreams. As she admits, being Haitian has influenced her life and worldview ever since she was a child. “As a young Haitian, those are some points that really affect us and determine who we are”, she says, acknowledging that she carries her Haitian identity as a badge of honor.

At the same time, she recognizes that one’s heritage isn’t enough to define one’s path in life. You also need other things, including education, determination, foresight, perseverance, and even a bit of luck. Fortunately, Bernadette is a gifted and resourceful young woman with a bright future ahead of her.

EDUCATION AND WORK

Bernadette is a multi-talented woman, and it shows. She studies psychology at UCATECI: Catholic University of Cibao, and currently occupies several professional positions. These include that of executive manager and brand creator, through which roles she pursues her dream of becoming financially independent and selfsufficient.

She also owns a marketing agency and works to expand her lingerie brand, which she hopes to turn into a worldwide phenomenon. However, her long-term dream is to become a psychologist, as she believes this is the best way she can serve her community. Until then, she’s grateful for her entrepreneurial spirit and amazing multi-tasking vision. These, she says, changed her and her family’s lives. “Having my first business at a younger age was life-changing and

a huge accomplishment for me and my family. That changes my point of view and determines who I am today. It’s given me all the skills that I have now.”

FUTURE GOALS

Bernadette plans to expand on her business, work toward creating multiple avenues of income, and solidify her brand at the international

level. “I want to be a serial business owner. I love creating, I have fun creating, and I can give back a little of what I receive. I want to open a showroom for my brand. That’s my next step. God will take care of the rest, so long as I say focused and believe in myself.”

VIEW ON HAITI AND HAITIAN YOUTH

Bernadette believes that Haiti isn’t exactly in the best place in the world, socially, politically, and culturally. Violence, corruption, and poverty can destroy and hold back progress, and that’s exactly what happens in Haiti. This makes it difficult for young people to escape their dire situations and create a better life for themselves. However, it can be done.

As Bernadette sees it, Haitian youth requires several things to turn their lives around: education, skills development, civic engagement, entrepreneurship, community development, and innovation, to name a few. Having strength of character and relentless determination will also help.

Bernadette hopes to grow a large enough online presence so she can reach out to people and become a role model for those less fortunate. And she doesn’t doubt for a second that she’ll succeed in her endeavors.

…carries her Haitian identity as a badge of honor.
