Editor’s Note

W

elcome to our “2015 Year in Review” edition. We tried to cover as much worthy stories and events that took place in Haiti, and within the Haitian Diaspora throughout 2015. From the Citadelle getting the 2015 certificate of excellence from TripAdvisor, to Haitian-Canadian diver, Jennifer Abel, winning gold at the Pan Am Games, are some of the few positive materials you’ll see inside this edition.

I registered HaitiOpen.com in 2008 to promote Haiti and the Haitian Diaspora at the highest level: MAINSTREAM. And 8 years later it’s finally happening with the magazine’s first I-95 Billboard in Hallandale Beach, FL, exit 18, South Bound, started on February 22nd.

The I-95 BILLBOARD advertisement is more than a commercial; it’s our opportunity to introduce a Haitian media that can compete at a mainstream level, WORLDWIDE; and to empower our youth, young and old that the Haitian culture is alive and has a mainstream presence. Founder and Editor-in-Chief, Jean Alfred Delva, 30 @alfred_haitiopen

“I registered HaitiOpen.com in 2008 to promote Haiti and the Haitian Diaspora at the highest level: MAINSTREAM.”

HaitiOpen.com | Winter 2016

And what better way to start promoting the Haitian culture than by introducing our music to the world: KOMPA! After running a poll to find out which band/ artist from the Haitian Music Industry (HMI) that is most romantic, dominant and consistent throughout 2015, Arly LaRiviere came as the #1 artist; consequently, winning the cover as 2015 King of Kompa. Next year, it may be a “Kompa Band of the Year” cover, instead of a single artist. Our next edition will be for the Compas Festival, in May. Until then, #HAITIOPEN

the Palm Inn

When Visiting Port-au-Prince By Shannon Bullman

OK, so although travel is a means to get away from home, it doesn’t mean that we don’t want to feel at home while we are gone. It’s easy to get caught up in the song and dance put on by hotels that are trying to out-compete each other and ultimately make a decision based on persuasion by the companies themselves. However, if you are looking for an authentic home away from home experience, check out the Palm Inn. Here’s why…

THE ACCOMMODATIONS

The rooms available at the Palm Inn are the definition of cozy. Looking like a photo straight from a Pinterest Board, the rooms are tastefully decorated in a way that looks both organic and mindfully pieced together. Rooms and suites range from singles to triples and come with an air conditioner, refrigerator, oven, radio, cable television and hot water. HaitiOpen.com | Winter 2016

THE AMENITIES Besides cozy rooms and beautifully manicured grounds, the Palm Inn has other amenities that guests find especially impressive. With a crystal blue, in-ground pool, fast internet and helpful staff, guests find that they have everything they need in a home to come back to after a long day of sightseeing. They even have an on-site restaurant too!

THE CONVENIENCE

THE FANTASTIC REVIEWS Travelers depend on reviews more than ever these days. Seasoned travelers often confess that they base their final decisions on accommodation by reviews alone. The Palm Inn has gained quite the reputation on well known sites such as Tripadvisor with an overall rating of excellence. It’s rating summary is high, receiving nothing less than a four or five out of five in all categories.

The superb staff goes above and beyond just making sure you have clean towels and a map to get around. This hotel offers the convenience of shuttle services and car rentals to get you around quicker and safer while visiting Haiti. OpenExperience Tips:

“Because of its popularity, reservations are recommended.”

by Ron Stern

Location: Stroll down the coconut tree-lined Boulevard du Carenage in Cap-HaitÏen and stop when you come to LaKay Bar and Restaurant. This delightful restaurant is popular with the locals as well as visitors, and for good reason.

Atmosphere: The interior of the restaurant features warm yellows, with wooden chairs and tables and wooden beams running across the ceiling. Potted plants lining the walls make for an intimate atmosphere. There is also additional seating on the sidewalk outside, where guests gather to listen to live music. Lakay serves Caribbean cuisine, with such dishes as skewer beef

tenderloin, Creole conch, tassot of goat, fried pork, and spaghetti Bolognaise. They also offer hamburgers, cheeseburgers, and chicken and tuna sandwiches. They are also well-known for their pizza.

Drinks available in the bar include beers like Guinness, Prestige, Heineken, Presidente and Corona. Whiskeys on offer include 18-year old Chivas or Dewar’s, Glenfiddich, and Johnnie Walker. Vodka enthusiasts will appreciate Cayman Blue, Absolut, Smirnoff and Grey Goose. Then there are the cognacs – Hennessy, Couvoisier, and Remy Martin. Non-alcoholic beverages are also available.

Culture: Cap-HaitÏen culture is on full display here at Lakay. They welcome cutting-edge musicians such as Paul Beaubrun and Boukman Eksperyans to their stage on a regular basis, and patrons can dance the night away. People: The people of Lakay are friendly and always go the extra mile to please their patrons. By the same token, visitors to Lakay know they will receive good food which they can eat in a pleasant atmosphere. Reviews: Lakay regularly receives excellent reviews on Trip Advisor. Their food, service and atmosphere have been highly praised. It’s no surprise that they have been awarded Trip Advisor’s Certificate of Excellence.

80+ Years of Haiti in a BOTTLE By Megan Collier

“…Cola Couronne is not only going to be a refreshing taste of tropical flavors to you but something that allows the economy in Haiti to continually grow in very positive ways.

F

or those heading to Haiti for any amount of time, whether two days or two weeks, you are guaranteed to come across a drink you may very well find to be your new favorite. Cola Couronne is the oldest manufactured soft drink from Haiti. Brasserie de la Couronne, the company that makes this drink has been producing it for more than 80 years and without sign of stopping anytime soon.

FAVORITE AMONG LOCALS & TOURISTS Because Cola Couronne has been around for so long, it has not only become a stapled beverage for the Haitians but has also gained great popularity with the tourists coming into the country as well. Many compare the drink to the classic Coca Cola as it has similar flavors

HaitiOpen.com | Winter 2016

and the same amount of calories dialing in at 120 alongside 31 grams of sugar in each serving. With a slightly lower sodium level, beating out Coca Cola 31 to 45 grams, Cola Couronne is sure to label “low sodium” for all to see.

COOL OFF WITH THE TROPICAL BUBBLY FLAVORS

If you have ever been to Haiti, then you undoubtedly know how ridiculously hot it can get there from sunrise to sundown. Though you can

“… oldest manufactured soft drink from Haiti … since 1929”

of course kick back on your holiday and bust open a bottle of beer, why not instead crack open something will in fact taste like you are in the Caribbean? Cola Couronne has a tropical, bubbly taste that you may just find incomparably better than a beer while soaking up those Haitian sunrays.

EVERYTHING TASTES BETTER IN A BOTTLE

Due to the fact that the country of Haiti has no aluminum throughout and no plans of bringing it in, all of the Cola Couronne made and produced there comes always in a tall glass bottle. However, the company has recently gained a U.S. plant in Miami called Universal Beverages where they produce Cola Couronne in an aluminum can. Because there is an increasing population of Haitians, they have been able to sell these in South Florida and various other parts of the United States. Despite the fact that it is readily available in a can, I think everyone would agree that there is just something about drinking it out of a glass bottle that makes it taste all the better. No matter which you prefer, the production of all Cola Couronne is not only going to be a refreshing taste of tropical flavors to you but something that allows the economy in Haiti to continually grow in very positive ways.

“To showcase the similarities and the major differences among Caribbean countries”

To create an environment where all forms of art will thrive so much that Caribbean artists in diaspora will be encouraged to go back to their homeland

The maiden edition of Caribbean Festival took place in 1972, in Guyana. Several other ones have been organized after. And the event keeps getting better. The last one which was also the 12th CARIFESTA took place in Haiti in 2015 from where the torch of CARIFESTA was passed on to Barbados. This implies that Barbados will host the next CARIFESTA. CARIFESTA XII took place from 21st to 30th of . It took place in famous Haitian cities – Port-AuPrice, Jacmel, Cap-Haitien, Gonaives and Les Cayes.

There was no dull moment from the beginning to the end. In fact, it was much better than the penultimate one that was hosted in Suriname in all aspect.

Haiti Wins

the 2015 Street Hockey World Championship By Christine Winters

H

aiti was able to clench the title of 2015 Street Hockey World Champions by defeating the Cayman Islands in a close game of 4:2 on June 28, 2015. They won the B-pool of the championship, which was held in Zug, Switzerland.

Throughout the Caribbean Islands and other parts of the world, street hockey is a huge sport. The world championships took place in June 2015 and Haiti became the victors; a shocker around the world. HaitiOpen.com | Winter 2016

The win was definitely a shock around the world for an array of reasons – with the biggest being that Haitians don’t generally play hockey. The International Street and Ball Hockey Federation allowed the Haitian-Canadian team in to represent Haiti, and had to bend the rules just slightly. The Haitian team was comprised mostly of people born in Montre-

“In order for Haiti to be victorious, they had to beat other teams as well, and this included France and Armenia.”” al. However, a few players, such as Ainslie Bien-Aimé, had played for the gold metal street hockey team in 2007 for Canada – and the team’s coach, Georges Laraque, is a former NHL player who was born in Canada as well.

“The team is comprised of Haitian-Canadians – many of which who never actually visited Haiti.”

“Many of the men on the team wanted a way to give back to the country. They have sent money and such, but according to the Toronto Sun, Bien-Aimé said that the opportunity presented itself in January and 75 guys were ready to go.”

The team is already building its player pool and looking forward to the next world championship, which takes place every other year. This means they have over a year to practice to get ready for the games in 2017.

Haiti Under-20 Women National Team Crowned 2015 CFU Champions By Christine Winters

Haiti Women National Under 20 Celebrating after Beating Jamaica 2-0

The second half had more energy with the both desiring to score,

“Batcheba Louis opened the scoring from the spot in the 19th minute after Konya Plummer handled the ball inside the box. The first half ended with the young reggae girls trailing.” HaitiOpen.com | Winter 2016

despite much of it being dominated by the host team. The young reggae girls tried to maintain the score as well as equalize despite the Haitian young star ladies dominating the play. However, this did not prevent Kensia Destinvil, the Haitian captain from scoring a second one. In the 83rd minute, Jamaica’s Deneisha Blackwood got into the referees books after being red carded. Nevertheless, one can conclude that the title championship had been presented to the Haitian ladies on a silver platter because they had the home advantage. It was also a unique opportunity to bring a taste of the Caribbean football to their home and entertain their fanatics with a taste for quality football.

This victory clearly depicts that women football in Haiti has grown to international standards in 2015, and there are no boundaries to where they can land.

“The match ended at 2-0 and the Haitian ladies carried the night as well as dethroning the defending champions and being crowned the 2015 CFU under 20 women champions.” Haiti Women National Under 20 Celebration after Beating Jamaica 2-0

Since the inception of the CFU Championship, 2015 was the 17th edition. In 2015, a total of 15 teams qualified for the championship and were categorized into four groups. Due to the uneven number of teams, group one had three teams while the rest had four teams each. Each team was a hard nut to crack with more young stars making their international debut and ended up featuring in some of the national teams.

he match was made to decide the welterweight and super welterweight championships and it took place on September 12, 2015 in Las Vegas Nevada at the MGM Grand Garden arena. The fight was broadcast across the world and Showtime pay-per-view and reached a massive audience. “Although Mayweather won the fight, he confirmed that he would be retiring after the fight.”

“The Berto VS Mayweather fight was designed as one of the largest high-stakes prefectural boxing matches in 2015.” HaitiOpen.com | Winter 2016

Although the fight was a decisive victory with Mayweather at 120-108, 118-110,117-111, his reputation suffered as a result.

Berto was quick to fire back about Mayweather’s tactics of running around the ring to keep his opponents at a distance before coming in to land punches. This is a style that makes Mayweather fights some of the longest and also some of the most dragged out to watch. This was part of the reason why many people were disappointed to watch the Manny Pacquiao fight. This was the strategy that proved equally as effective against Berto however. While Berto did expect to have a lot of chasing to do, he could not have anticipated having to run around quite so much. All the same, even with a loss the

Berto had some hilarious comments in the same week suggesting that he “Didn’t know he was going to have to wear track shoes”. Berto Media coverage of the fight was fantastic and many true fans realized that Andre Berto really did his best to try and get some fair hits in on Mayweather. This fight will always be an iconic battle and could perhaps go down in history books as the fight that would close out Mayweather’s career. Berto will be back to fight another day!

D

jakout #1 is a breakout band, retaining the same name as the original, with just one change: a NUMBER ONE. They are based in Carrefour, Haiti, and started their musical journey in 1986. Over the years, the band has seen many members come and go, and has eight studio albums to their credit. The lead singer is Pouchon Duverger.

Then they broke up and one of the groups called themselves Djakout #1. Since the two separate bands are still playing the same songs from their hit era, their fans can expect the same type of music moving forward. One of the biggest awards won by the group was the recognition of being the top recipient of the Kalot Marasa (two slaps) award in 2008.

“Their first appearance on American network television was 7 years ago on MTV with Wyclef Jean.”

“Zenglen is one of the earliest bands in the Haitian Kompa scene.”

It

all started with the coming together of three very talented musicians in Port au Prince, Haiti, in the 80s.

CURRENT MEMBERS: Brutus Derissaint aka Pe Brut (Founder & Rhythm Guitar), Eddy Germain aka Ti Maestro (Congas), James Nozil (Percussions), Wid Octavius (Vocalist), Frero Jean-Baptiste (Vocalist), Kenny Cenat (Drums), Barthelemy Joachim aka Bato (Guitar), Dano Eugene (Keyboard), Yves Abel aka Da Fridge (Bass), Nicolena Ferrentino (Saxophone), Alexis Llerena aka Plata (Trombone), Philippe Beauregard (Trumpet), Wedmont Fanor aka Ti Trumpet (Trumpet). STUDIO ALBUMS: The Color of Time (1980), An Nou Alez (2010), Nou ka jere ti sa a (2012), Rezilta (2013),

Rezilta Pi Red (2015).

The trivia on the band name is very interesting. It all started from a beer- fueled afternoon joke by three members when a bottle broke and shattered into a million pieces. The band members cried out ‘ZENGLEN’, which means ‘shards of broken glass!’! They immediately took this as a sign. The trio band aimed to make highpitched music to shatter all glass ceilings and usher in the new age of Kompa music. Truly, their 1989 debut album was called ‘The Color of Time’ or ‘Koule Tan’. Their next hit song ‘Faith’ or ‘Fidel’ dealt with the concept of change. Their newest track is ‘Love Someone’. The video on YouTube has over 600,000 views.

ome folks were wondering if Mac D leaving Harmonik in the summer of 2014 was a publicity stunt; below is his press response in case you didn’t read it: Mac D: “Hey Guys,

I would like to make a public apology to my band mates, the public, my fans and the media for my previous statement about quitting the band. I have been under a tremendous amount of pressure and got to a point where I was fed up with the internal operation of the band. After numerous meetings and talking to my business partners, I have decided to recant the initial statement giving this a second chance. At this time I would like to again apologize specially to our fans that have been loyal since the beginning and promise that I will do everything in my power not to let this happen again.

AN EXCLUSIVE TAKE ON THE PASSIONATE CLUB DES A FOUNDER AND PRESIDENT

Mr. Jean Michel Galume By Jean Alfred Delva

“Club Des Artistes: Where Ideas and Talents Meet Together in God’s Hands.” Q: Mr. Galumette, how you got your start in the movie business? A: I started in 1987, as an actor, with the late Bob Lemoine in “Mr. Pyram Agent Secret 812”, a popular TV series that aired on Television National of Haiti. I was hired to do motorcycle stunts.

Q: Do you have any role models you looked up to? A: Yes of course I had a few role models, but from day one, I decided to shadow Bob Victor Lemoine. I wanted to know everything he knew. Q: You write, produce, direct, and star in your own movies. Which act do you like the most? Which one is more difficult?

A: Yes, I am a writer, director, producer, editor, and also an actor. These roles are all difficult, but the most difficult one for me is editing. Editing for me is very personal and intimate. It’s very unlikely for me to share this part with any other editors.

Q: Mr. Galumette, you are the founder, owner, and president of Club Des Artistes? What is Club Des Artistes?

HaitiOpen.com | Winter 2016

A: To simply answer this, I could tell you that Club Des Artistes is where ideas and talents meet together in God’s hands...but there is more to Club Des Artistes than that. We are an umbrella where all Artists from all crafts, race, creed, and background can feel right at home. We are also a production company that organizes quality events to keep our artists in business, and our community entertained and therefore healthy.

Q: You have contributed to over 7 films, what drives you to keep going? A: One word: Passion. God created me with a beautiful mind and I simply decided not to waste it. I have always been passionate about the act of “creation” especially the creation of beautiful things: music, film, paintings, dance, and art in general. Like I often say to people around me, every time someone creates something, another small “God” is born; so what keeps me going is my passion for God my creator, and the beautiful mind that he created me with.

Q: I am sure that losing your mentor Bob V. Lemoine was very tragic to you, his family, the Haitian movie industry, and his countless fans. The tribute that you gave to Bob Lemoine is something that no one will ever forget. How did the tribute movie

«

ARTISTES’

ette

come about? What kind of response did you receive after November 28th’s homage to Bob Lemoine? A: Bob was a very close friend. He called me his little brother. It’s hard to put into words the admiration I had for Bob and his accomplishments. Haiti lost a giant. Bob was the “Mapou of Haitian radio and television”. The movie we projected in tribute to Bob Lemoine (CONSEQUENCE TRAHISON) was the last movie that Bob starred in. I wrote, directed, and produced that movie. Bob Victor Lemoine was one of my actors...so we came full circle. The tribute was great. We had representatives from the Haitian Consulate, Chairman Jean Monestime was there and offered a great memorabilia to Bob’s widow. The government of Miramar was there in full and even made an official proclamation that November 28th is now Bob Victor Lemoine day. Club Des Artistes is very proud that we could do this for Bob. Rest in peace my big brother.

“I want to make my time on earth count for something.” invited to bring the film to the California Film Festival, but we couldn’t afford it because there was a lot of cost involved...so reality hit, and we had to print the movie and start selling it on DVD. The bootleggers got a hold of it and to this day, we are still facing hard times despite our hard work.

Q: Speaking of movie industry, given the opportunity, would you consider making a movie outside of the Haitian market? A: Of course I would. All the movies that I have made so far have been what I hate to

Q: The Guilt part 1 obtained 6th position out of 150 countries that competed at the New-York Independent Film Festival? That was a tremendous achievement. What inspired such a great original story?

A: That was in 2009. HIV was the great motivator. The Guilt (part 1) simply showed that anybody can contract HIV. It doesn’t matter who you are: rich, pretty, young, educated...Everyone needs to protect themselves period. Q: How did you feel after finishing #6 out of 150 countries?

A: Elated. Are you kidding me? I felt ecstatic, but sadly, that feeling didn’t last. We were

“Q: Producing movies for the Haitian market must have its challenges. What advice do you have for someone who wants to get started in this industry? A: First, do not give up on your dream because your work could be the one that breaks down the door to let all of us in. Focus on quality. “

call: “NO BUDGET MOVIES” Given a budget, I would hit the ball out of the park. I wish someone would try me.

Q: 2016 is still young. Do you have anything in the work for this year? A: “THE SMELL of LOVE” Coming in November

Mrs. West Indies International 2014: Natacha Sarthou Kalicharan, Is Using Her Influence to Raise Money to Shelter Those in Need in Haiti

M

y Reason for Doing This: When I was a little girl, sitting in the back seat of the car while my Dad was driving, I took pleasure looking outside the window at Haiti’s scenic view of beautiful mountains and valleys. Yet, I also recognized its impoverished state which needed immense help.

It was not until after many years, while preparing lunch for my children, I was watching a TV program of missionaries in Haiti. My heart went out, wanting to help. I cried out to the Lord to find out what is it that I needed to do. Then suddenly, I had the strong desire to build homes for the poor. “How Lord, how can I?” I said. Then, I pursued this business to help with the fund raising, and my sons started a shoebox savings with most of the money primarily coming from monies they would find around our home (especially in Dad’s pants’ pockets while doing the laundry :)).

“I said to myself that someday, I would like to contribute in rebuilding what was once called the “Pearl of the Antilles,” from its ashes to its beauty, from poverty to wealth.” HaitiOpen.com | Winter 2016

Thanks to faithful donors, Food For The Poor’s programs provide housing, clean water, education, microenterprise initiatives, healthcare, and emergency relief in addition to feeding hundreds of thousands of people each day.

Collectively, Food For The Poor has raised over $11 billion in aid, more than half of which was provided in the last five years, and has built more than 91,000 housing units for the destitute.
