LETTER FROM THE LEADERSHIP At Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco, we believe that by embracing inventive solutions, by embodying the spirit of the Bay Area and by partnering with those who want to see their communities thrive, we’re unstoppable. This past year marks one of the strongest for Habitat, renewing our belief that our model is alive and well. More importantly, our organization is benefitting a greater number of deserving families than ever before. Best of all, we ushered 41 Habitat families into brand new or newly renovated Habitat homes during the year. As many of you are aware, we started our ambitious 36-unit, $12.9 million condominium development at 7555 Mission Street in the heart of the recession. It is the largest and most innovative Habitat development built anywhere in the world. With the support of city and county officials, 11,000 volunteers, thousands of donors and 36 dedicated partner families, we completed the Mission Street development in April and watched with pride as our partner families accepted the keys, not just to their homes, but to a new future of economic security. With 7555 Mission Street, we showed that partnership, will and agility can propel developments forward even in difficult economic times. We are now using that momentum to build our 28-unit development Habitat Terrace in San Francisco.

In 2013, we also expanded our reach to make a bigger impact in the neighborhoods where we build. We’re proud of our many partnerships, especially a recently completed project with Project WeHope, a gymturned-warming shelter in East Palo Alto that will more than double its reach since Habitat doubled its space and added laundry and kitchen facilities. By partnering with the community and making a commitment to renovate Bay Area institutions, we are strengthening the fabric of our neighborhoods, our communities and the Bay Area at large. Finally, we saw what a secure home can mean for a Habitat family years later, when four of Habitat Greater San Francisco families paid off their Habitat mortgages in full. Housing and mortgage stability has enabled new choices, new opportunities and new paths forward—all carved out by our families’ hard work. Your partnership has directly contributed to our future, a future that is ambitious, bright and achievable thanks to your investment in our work right here in the Bay Area. Thank you for standing with Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco as we build stronger communities and create new paths to economic vitality for Bay Area residents. With thanks,

Phillip Kilbridge, Executive Director

Patrick J. McGaraghan, Board Chair

“owning a home is all about family. i have three kids and i really love for them to see me working hard for our family. it is a dream come true for me. gennis reyes

Inventive Solutions In spring of 2013, we celebrated the completion of our most ambitious and innovative development to-date at 7555 Mission Street in Daly City, which is now a community of 36 first-time homeowners. This site would not have been possible without the generosity of so many willing partners, as well as our dedicated volunteers, 11,000 of whom invested more than 157,200 volunteer hours. And today, our 36 newest partner families are thriving. After a long search for stable and safe housing, Aleli and Gennis Reyes have finally found it at 7555 Mission Street. Now secure in their 3-bedroom condominium in Daly City, this family of five can focus on school, work and family—rather than on affording constant rent increases. When you walk into the Reyes’ new home, you can immediately sense the pride that they feel—from the beautiful decor, the smiles on the children’s faces and Aleli and Gennis’ well-used hardhats, which are proudly displayed on their bedroom wall. They are so thankful that they can now continue to live where they work, build equity and create a cycle of prosperity for their family for generations to come.

Our goal to move beyond homebuilding to deepen our impact in neighborhoods where we have built a critical mass of homes is growing. Revitalizing neighborhoods in partnership with longstanding community residents is a vital part of our day-to-day business. By joining with other local nonprofits to complete the buildout of their physical space, Habitat has the privilege of leveraging our core skills as a builder to be a part of something much bigger.

“Not only did (Habitat) bring roughly $250,000 of valuable improvements to our facility by leveraging their volunteer resource base, but their team went well beyond the original scope of the project, doing the unexpected.” pastor bains Project WeHOPE is a warming shelter for the homeless located in East Palo Alto. Its small space was largely unfinished and required a complete transformation to make it suit Project WeHOPE’s needs. Habitat added two ADA compliant bathrooms, a kitchen, a recreation space, a laundry space and storage cubes, among other features. Today, Project WeHOPE sleeps 50 per night and has plans to reach more than 500 individuals annually—more than double its reach just one year ago. Since the expansion, Project WeHOPE is able to keep its doors open year-round providing much more than a bed to sleep on for some of East Palo Alto’s most vulnerable. The impact of this work is significant. Project WeHOPE just received a grant from the City of East Palo Alto in the amount of $1.3 million to expand its services even more, according to Project WeHOPE founder Pastor Paul Bains.

hard work and success Twelve years ago, Adam Farias was 24 years old, a single dad to a nine year old, living with over six family members in a crowded house and working two jobs to provide just the basics for his young son; he was financially insecure and unsure what the future held. Adam’s father, a Redwood City employee at the time, mentioned that 36 affordable Habitat for Humanity homes were available and strongly encouraged Adam to apply. After a long application process, Adam qualified for the program, was accepted, completed his 500 hours of sweat equity and purchased his Habitat home in Redwood City in 2002. And, this past September, Adam successfully paid off the mortgage to his Habitat home. With his son now an adult and out of the house, Adam is ready to pursue dreams that he never thought would be possible—like traveling to New York City as well as potentially growing his family. Adam shared that he is so thankful for Habitat since “becoming a Habitat homeowner helped me to learn about responsibility and grow up faster.”
