Our Mission

We build and sustain affordable homeownership opportunities for families in Marin, San Francisco and San Mateo counties.



Hello friends, If you are fortunate enough to own a home in the Bay Area, you understand how the equity you are building through owning that home has a direct impact on your overall wealth. Multiple research studies have shown that homeownership, and the equity built through it, is the most significant way Americans build wealth across generations. At Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco, building equity for our homeowners and our entire community is the foundational thing we do. And there is a continuum of equity that is created through building those homes. It starts with approved homeowners performing sweat equity during the construction of their homes which helps keep the construction costs down. Then the continuum flows through their housing payments being capped at 30% of their income. Knowing that their housing payments will be stable over the course of their loan, they can

invest in their children’s futures and their retirement. And while they are making payments on their loans, which are 0% interest loans, they build equity which they get back when they are ready to move. We buy back all Habitat GSF-built homes, returning the amount of the principal payments made to date. That way the family who owned the home receives back all of the funds they have invested toward their mortgage – their equity – and we can resell the home to another qualified family so the home remains affordable. And the wealthcreation-through-equity cycle begins again for multiple families through multiple generations. Because of you, hundreds of families are currently building equity through their Habitat GSF homes, and in the next few years hundreds more will be as well. Those families and our whole community are so much better off because of that opportunity.

In FY 2021, applications were open for 27 Habitat GSF homes

Applicants At Habitat GSF, through the construction of more affordable homes for ownership, we are helping to drive housing equity, especially for those families in the community who have historically been excluded.

In context, while 89% of Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco homeowners identify as BIPOC, only 42% of homeowners in our tri-county service region are BIPOC.

Homeowner Survey Our Homeowner Development Department conducted a survey with our current Habitat GSF homeowners to learn more about them and the impact of homeownership for them and their families. Here are a few of our key findings.

Looking Back Homeownership

It was our honor to welcome Mayor London Breed and Supervisor Rafael Mandelman to Amber Drive to celebrate with us in May 2021 as work offically got underway at this site for 8 future affordable homes in the heart of San Francisco. Over at Geneva Village in Daly City and Jefferson Avenue in Redwood City, we were thrilled to onboard 26 families. These new homeowners are finishing up their sweat equity and moving into their new homes in 2022. We welcomed the 27th new Habitat GSF family of the year into a resale home.

Home Preservation

The impact of COVID-19 was felt particularly hard on our Home Preservation Program, where we made the difficult decision to pause in-home repairs for the health and safety of homeowners and staff alike. Not content to wait it out, we channeled our time and energy into growing our program in preparation for reopening, in the process successfully secured more than $4 Million in new funding to serve even more families with serious home repair needs. With these new funds, we’ll be able to make much larger repairs (up to $75,000 per home!) that allow long-time, low-income homeowners to stay in their homes and communities. We’re excited to launch this expanded program in 2022.

Advocacy

27 housing bills, representing bipartisan legislation, will expand housing production in California, hold local communities accountable to produce housing, streamline the permitting process, and increase density to produce more inclusive and vibrant communities. This suite of bills will address California’s housing crisis, but also address climate change by promoting and encouraging denser housing that is transit oriented and closer to job hubs, a critical element in limiting California’s greenhouse gas emissions. Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco was proud to be directly involved in advocating for much of this legislation.

A Look Forward Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco is focused on growth and increasing our impact in Marin, San Francisco, and San Mateo Counties. We have bold plans to double both our affordable housing production and our critical repairs and rehabs by 2027. In April 2022, we shared with our community our $100 Million Building Families a Future campaign, which will make possible the doubled impact of our programs. We are grateful to our community of supporters and partners for already contributing $50 Million toward this goal, including a $6.75 Million gift from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott in March 2022. Ms. Scott’s incredible investment in Habitat GSF, one of only four Habitat affiliates in California to receive a gift from her this spring, reinforces the strength of our mission, leadership, supporters, and pipeline of projects. We have been hard at work preparing a healthy pipeline of projects. On the homebuilding side, we are in the final planning stages on the largest ever 100% affordable homeownership development in Marin County. These 80 homes will provide homeownership opportunities to hundreds of local residents. In addition, we are thrilled to be kicking off a new project in Redwood City, bringing an additional 33 Habitat GSF homes to the city. We are actively in conversation with three other cities in our region about viable projects. Our Home Preservation program has expanded in scope too. With the ability to take on larger critical repairs and home rehabs, more low-income, long-term homeowners will avoid displacement and be able to stay right here in the Bay Area.
