Dear Bemee, Thank you for including the picture of the GWP that was found in Florida. (May/June '95 Wire News) Although we have not located the owner, we do have information on the dog's breeding.

Through the efforts of Linda Gagnon, Rescue Coordinate for the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon Club, the breeder of the GWP was discovered. Unfortunately James Mergler is deceased. The dog is about 12 years old so he may have been sold as a puppy, or later when Mr. Mergler closed his kennel. Linda is trying to locate anyone who handled Mr. Mergler's dogs in conformation. Perhaps they would have information on the dogs from his kennel.

The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon Club members, and especially Linda Gagnon, should be commended for all they have done for this GWP. Linda was contacted by the Animal Shelter in South Florida about a Griffon that was found. She contacted me to foster a home for the dog until the owner was located. When I went to get the dog, I saw it was a GWP. The Griffon Club was willing to help search for the owner. The poor old dog was in bad shape when he was found last December. He had a broken tooth that was infected and a chronic ear problem. The Griffon Club donated over $300 for vet bills so the dog could live out his days in reasonable comfort.

He is doing okay now, but I don't think he has much longer.

Even though he was diagnosed with advanced stage of heartworm, he seems content here.

MASTER HUNTER AWARDS/ANNUAL AWARDS Dear Members, I am putting my brush aside for a moment to clarify the Master Hunter Award presented by the GWPCA. This award is a painted portrait of the Master dog, and is presented at the following year's National Awards Banquet. (title earned in 1995, painting awarded in 1996) I request all photographic material by March 1st of the next year to insure enough time to complete all the paintings. If the photos are available before this time please send them as I usually start the commisions in November.

In order to be eligible for this award you must be a member of the GWPCA at the time the dog recieves his Master Hunter Title, non-members are not eligible to recieve a painting. In the last two months there have been 2 dogs who will not receive a portrait because the owner was not a National member; Azura Vom Treborwolf, MI owner: Roger Silvon, Waukesh, WI Isabella Vom Fasenental, MH owner: Susan Riley, Woolwich, ME Please if you have a dog competing at this level or know of someone who is, don't miss out, join the GWPCA. FROM THE EDITOR As the saying goes Timing Is Everything. And the timing of this issue has been tricky. I am hoping this gets to everyone before they leave for the Nationals, but if not I hope you will enjoy it whn you get home.

It is that time of the year again. Nationals week! This years Nationals are being hosted by the Fort Detroit Club who must be very busy indeed. Putting on an event like this is nerve wracking, time consuming, expensive, exciting and lot's of fun (once the week is over). Even before I get there, I know that this will be one of the biggest and best events yet, and I am marking off the days on my calendar. I recently spoke with Bill Richardson; President of the GWPCA and Chairman for this event, and although he sounds a little harried, he assured me that all is going well and the final touches are being put on everything. An update on N ationals Week can be found in this newsletter.

Everyone who is a member of the GWPCA has received a premium list for all events and everyorie who enters a dog will receive a time schedule for judging. If you are not entering a dog, but would like to attend you can contact Bill Richardson at (810) 678-2529 for a schedule. For us "old" hands we know that this is a very busy week, filled with Wirey things to do and see. For those of you who have never attended a Wire Week before here are a few tips: 1. Friday,Saturday and Sunday will all be "show" days. This is the place to see dogs you have read about but may have never seen. These will be run pretty much like any other dog show, so bring a chair, warm clothers, an umbrella (just in case) and a pen to mark your catalog with your favorite dogs and bitches.

2. Sunday night will be our Annual Meeting and A wards Banquet. Bring your appetites and check book. I understand there will be tons of great items to be raffled and auctioned off. Don't forget to make your reservations.

3. Monday through ??? will be the field events. The Hunting Test (open to GWP's only) will begin bright and early Monday morning. You can walk behind the braces and watch the dogs work. The Ionia grounds are pretty, and they offer good viewing for a walking gallery. Remember to bring an item of blaze orange to wear.

If you want to watch any of the trial stakes, you really should rent a horse. The braces move pretty quick and the grounds are hilly, not advantageous to walking. Horses can be rented by the brace or by the day, but waiting to rent by the brace is risky. Your best bet is to rent onefor the day of the event you want to watch. If you know someone else who will be attending you can split the cost. Horses can be in very short supply, so contact the wrangler early.

Even if you don't ride, you can still enjoy yourself at the trial. There is a lovely clubhouse, complete with fireplace to sit and catch up with old friends. Each evening there will be something "special" going on. Each club will be hositng "Happy Hour", now I don't know what the other clubs are doing ;but word has it that the Del Val Club is holding Derby Days, complete with Mint Julips and Wire Racing. What's Wire Racing? You will just have to c'mon out and see. (This will be Monday night) The key to enjoying the Nationals is to plan early, and then relax.

I want to thank all who have volunteered to help with the newsletter. Any time I ask for a new columnist I get at least 2 phone calls for the position. We will be having some new Wirehair activities for you to read about in upcoming issues, I hope you will enjoy them.

"The News Review"

Several club members decided to try something other than an AKC show, and all enjoyed the experience oftrying something new. The group participated in an "International Aile Rasse Hunde Gruppe Club of America" match. They found the atmosphere more relaxed for both the officials as well as the exhibitors. Writing critiques for each dog, the GWP group was particularly flattered in that the judges indicated that all the Wirehairs should finish their championships in future AKC shows. Taking Best of Breed, as well as a VI rating, was Silke Alberts Cadenberg Urchin V Trey (Ginny). This gave her the third CACIB certificate which made her an International Champion! Mildred Revell's puppy, Weidenhugel Brita V Simon took the Sweepstakes, and received $10.00 Has your hunting buddy been "skunked"? Here's a remedy from Club President Mildred Revell: Mix together 1 quart of hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, and liquid soap. Bathe the dog using this mixture. Leave it on for a short period of time. Rinse with tap water, and presto! Your buddy smells sweet again!

To increase club memberships, the club offers a first year complimentary membership whenever someone buys a Wirehair from a club member.

Cindy Heiller DVM' s Weidenbach Ulla V Rap (Gretta) finished her championship in a very impressive way ...how about getting eleven points in one month! Showing her versatility, Gretta also has three legs toward her Junior Hunter title, and is also shown by Cindy in Obedience.

The computer age comes to the GWPC of NC. Two club members are SEJanh@UCDavis.EDUandSKCutter@AOL.com.Both want to know if there are any more of you out there on the "superhighway"?

FROM OREGON "The Wireless Wire" Information from the Oregon Club comes via the lelephone and smoke signal!

1993 National Specialty Breed Winner Ch Cascade Cate Von Duffin, SH finished the requirements and is now a Master Hunter!

Both Ann and Terry are very proud of her accomplishments. Also from Kennels von Duffin comes news that their Rockland Wags finished her championship at Brush Prairie at the tender age of 11 months. At the club's field trial, taking first place in Open Derby (all breeds, 13 entries) was Von Duffin's Thundersticks. Thunder is 14 months old.

How would you like to be sitting across the table from someone who means the world to you, chatting up a storm about the accomplishments of your woofies at the big weekend shows, the events of a recent breeding trip, and other meaningless thins that people talk about, when BAM! the person doing the talking is rendered speechless! Thats exactly what happended to Terry Duffin. Ann had just returned from the Brush Paririe shows as well as a trip to Michigan, when she suffered a stroke that affected her ability to speak. Tests showed a hole in Ann's heart, and it seems

a blood clot shot out of the hole and went straight to that part of her brain that controls speech. The happy note is that Ann is recovering and is able to talk again, (although some long words might give her a little trouble).

The result of the stroke could have been much worse, so both Ann and Terry are thanking their lucky stars that all is well. So when you see Ann do something silly, she'll tell you it's not a "blond" thing", but "it must have been my stroke".

We know there are more of you with Wires in the State of Oregon.

We would love to be telling the world about your accomplishments, but we can't if we don't know about them.

"The Hot Wire"

Generous Club members have provided homes for two of our rescues. The biggest turnaround was one little bitch who had been so abused she cowered at the slightest correction. She is now training the wild young puppy she shares the house with, and she no longer retreats when you approach her. Love goes a long way!

The club held a one day all-walking field trial, open to GWP' s only.

FROM TWIN CITIES "The Quarterly News Wire" The Twin Cities Club has been approved for hosting the 1996 Nationals, and they have already made several committee appointments.

From the profits of a "Shoot -to -Retrieve" event held last year, they built a state- of -the -art bird wagon. Thanks to the engineering skills of Dwight Muth, the wagon is reputed to be the best in the five state area. In fact, the birds reside in a more luxurious place than some larger two legged creatures. Congratulations to Rhonda Haukoos's Soo Line's allied Freighter (Ansel) who finished his Championship. Ansel was the winner of the 1990 Puppy Classic.

June 10 saw the Twin Cities Club holding their Specialty. Taking Best in Sweepstakes was Roger and Lois Bultman's SGR China Doll and Best Opposite went to Bruce Wuornos and Kari Winger's Ripsnorter's Hurricane Sonbar. Going Best of Breed was Ch Ripsnorter's Thunderhart (Longo &George-Clipse owners). Best of Opposite/Best of Winner's and Winners Bitch was Don and Dolores Beechtree's Beechtree's Misty Morning. Winner's dog was Kelly and don Erlandson's Liebenwaid's Heartbreaker (this win made Eli a new champion.)

The Club's annual picnic was held on July 16... talk about "Disneyland" There was tubing on the Rum River (1' d like to know how it got it's name ... ) a water slide, some field work, and a barbeque. Sounds like a great time!

It seems that Liz Barrett has become a "Wisconsin-ite" (is that what they're called?) She's been moving lock, stock, barrel, dogs and horses to a 193 acre farm in Spring Valley, which is about 40 miles east of the Twin Cities. Isn't 193 acres about the size of Rhode Island? Some serious dog training is about to get underway.

FROM THE DELAWARE VALLEY "The Versatile" From Regina Schwabe came this note: Woodruff's Will Scarlet finished his Championship at the Lancaster Kennel Club under Constance Barton. "Beebee" was handled by his owner/breeder. He lives with Claudia, Jerry, Benjamin and Rebecca Steinberg, and is co-owned and bred by Len Stirling. and Regina. Everyone is very poud of this young guy!

Jan Fast had a very scarey time recently when her pregnant bitch Sarah went into labor. She could have lost Sarah as well as the entire litter, and the vet was surprised to hear that only one pup didn't make it. Hope all is well with the entire brood now.

Charlie Kissinger's eight month old Hellbender's Jake finished his Junior Hunter title in four straight tests! Jake also scored a Prize I in NA VHDA Natural Ability. Jan Fast handled her dog Haar Baron's Han's Legacy, for the first time in afield event and walked away with a Prize II. It was only his fourth time ever on birds! Other members garnering NA VHDA recognition were Natural Ability Carol Anderson's Liebchen's Field Skipper (Adam) Prize I, Jeff Anderson's Leibchen's Fiery Skipper (Sheely) PrizeI, George Tredway's Liebchen's Ocala Skipper (Cassie) Prize II. Utility Edgar Leander's Ace V Schoenblick (Dox) Prize II. FROM ILLINOIS The GWP Club of Illinois is holding its first independent Specialty Show on October 7th at King's Kennels in Riverwoods, Illinois.

FROM FORT DETROIT "The Barbed Wire" Introducing two new Master Hunters; SGR Witchcraft (Kahlua) coowned by Mick Eckout and Gail Richardson, is the third of her litter to achieve this title. Also, Ed Wilkins' Gustav Jaeger (Gus) finished in five out of six tries, and was handled by his trainer, Walter Furesz.

And you thought pretty faces were only discovered in Hollywood!

Bob Moses and his lovely Wirehair SGR Lady Katrina Mayfly (Kat) were invited by pro-trainer Len Jenkins to put on a pointing dog demonstration at a recent sportsmen's show. The segmment was filmed by Rob Trott for his Great Lakes Outdoors program and was aired during May. The bird, by the way, was planted on a cement floor. I thought it was called an "outdoor" show!

The Club's Field Trials were a study in contrasts. The one in April was more of an endurance test, with the weather going from freezing rain and hail to blizzard like conditions. Judges and participants looked like Artic explorers with icicles hanging from beards and mustaches (the guys, not the ladies). In between whiteouts, the stakes were run. The May field trial was the antithesis of the one just described. The day remained cool and dry, and the club ran 54 dogs injust over 12 hours. Hearty souls, those Fort Detroiters!

In late April, the club held a Hunt Test with great weather prevailing and the largest Wirehair entries they can rember, twenty in all. (33 Master, 5 Senior and 12 Junior) A large number qualified, and those that didn't had great scores but suffered a few lapses in memory.

Club members have been on the show circuit as well, with many wanting to get dogs finished before the start of the hunting and field trial season.

Dr, Dallas TX 75227 (214) 388-2288. She welcomes hearing from all club members as well as other club's newsletter editors ...so be sure to put her on your mailing list. The club has drafted a Constitution and set of By-Laws, which will be approved by the membership at their November meeting.

Those members going to the Nationals are looking forward to cohosting the "Margaritaville" hospitality night, and will be bringing some Tex-Mex salsa to liven up the party ...as if it needed a little more spirit!

The Michigan State Veterinarian is giving the Texas members fits because of their "rabie epidemic" in the state. Say Ann, they're having to jump through a few extra hoops to get their dogs into Michigan. Maybe its a new Utility Class!

A wirehair bitch was found running loose in the area southwest of Fort Worth around the Fourth of July, and was taken in by veterinarian Bob Bearden. The bitch has since whelped 10 pups that are now four weeks old and appear to be purebred. They are looking for homes for the pups, which of course have no papers. Anyone interested please call Dr. Bearden at (817) 249-1986.

Club members are looking at putting on a Fun Hunt Test in the fall, as well as a field training day and seminar in order to raise some well needed funds.

THE BEST EXCUSE yET ....

FOR NOT TRAINING THE DOGS This news comes from members Bob and Alex Palmer from Vail Colarado; Returning from a trip to Wisconsin to show their Wire puppy, Bob reports that he cannot go out and train with his flock of Chuckars. because the BEAR ate them. It seems that one of the local Grizzlies thought a lite dinner of Chuckar on the wing would be delightfull. I have heard of losing birds to fox, skunk even weasels, but a bear?

Soon after this episode, while out walking the dogs, the young Wire dissapeared. Both Bob and Alex called and called while continuing towards home. There was a new home being constructed along the way and up popped a GWP in the front seat of the truck belonging to one of the construction workers. How cute, Alex thought, they have a Wirehair too! Only to find out that it was their Wirehair finishing up the workers lunch. Luckily, the lunchbox owner had a sense of humor, and after a new sandwich was rustled up everyone had a good laugh.

Remember all local club secretaries are asked to send me a copy of your club newsletter. And, all members of the GWPCA are encouraged to send results of your specialties, field trials, hunting tests and fun days. We want to include all of you and your wonderful wirey friends. But we can't tell what we don't know. I see from the upcoming events that the many clubs are doing "things" this fall.

I am looking forward to reporting to the GWPCA on the AKC's Canine Genetic Health Conference to be held in New Jersey on October 7 and 8. This conference should provide stimulus for further research and data collection in various genetic diseases as well as their prevention. In the meantime, a few tidbits gleaned from literature, mailing. phone calls: The School of Veterinary Medicine at Perdue University is conducting an eppidemiological study into the causes of bloat in dogs. Dogs most at risk are in decreasing order: Great Dane St Bernard Weimaraner Irish Setter Gordon Setter Standard Poodle Basset Hound Doberman Pincher Old English Sheepdog German Shorthaired Pointer Please note the GWP's "cousin" ranks 10th on this list. The Purdue study has until now concentrated on chest and abdomen conformation. They are also interested in the genetic connection.

Purebreds are three times as likely to have bloat as mixed-breeds and individual families seem to be susceptible to bloat. They are eager to receive pedigree information on related dogs that have bloated. In a recent article on the heritability of traits in canines, a number of characteristics were enumerated. A sample follows from the August 1995 Gazette. These estimates give us the likelihood thata given trait will be passed on to the next generation.

It appears that the safety offeeding this additive for longer than two years has never been proven. In view of the many possible problems attributed to this preservative (sterility, liver and kidney cancer, vaccine failures), it appears to be safer to stick with foods that do not contain ehtoxyquin. You have to wonder how much is in a bag when it is among the first 6 or 8 ingredients listed on the label; they are listed by weight!

Book Recommendations: Susan Conant has written a series of mysteries that take place at dog training clubs, dog shows, agility camps and the like.

They are fun reading. The author throws in common-sense dog care caveats whenever the pace of the story permits.

Some titles: Dead and Doggone, Gone to the Dogs, A New Leash on Death, Paws Before Dying. They're great fun to read even if you don't normally read mysteries.

Wendy Volhard and Kerry Brown DVM have published The Holistic Guide for a Healthy Dog. This is must reading for anyone interested in canine nutrition and alternative therapies.

Well written from a preventative care point of view by a respected trainer and a veterinarian.

Mary Spies It is sad to see more and more Wires showing up in humane societies and shelters. A lot of them are young and obviously well bred and not necessarily in poor condition. In fact, I have been completly shocked by the quality of dogs that are winding up it "the system"!

I quess I shouldn't assume that it's only lesser quality dogs that need rescuing. Our breed is becoming popular enough that it is attracting the attention of people wanting to make a fast buck breeding and selling hunting dogs. I think that we have all had the experience of talking to people on the phone who want to start breeding, They want to buy a bitch puppy because their hunting buddy down the road just got a male and they want to breed them together. I always string em along and inquire about bloodlines and quality and ability in general and they haven't a clue. They just think there is money to be made and a market to be "tapped".

In my opinion these people should not be sold to in the first place. Our breed does not need this type of "breeder" and we should not be selling our pups without contracts that spell out breeding conditions and contracts that state clearly that we will take our own puppies back. Whenever I talk directly to people who want to give up their Wires, the first thing I ask them is if they, havetalked to the breeder about returning the dog? Ususally the reply is"No, it never occured to me

to talk to the breeder." Apparently some of us out there are not stressing return policies, or else we don't have one to begin with. One suggestions is, if you won't take your puppies back, then don't produce them in the first place.

This leads to proper screening of puppy buyers.

If you screen them carefully and don't sell to the "iffy" people in the first place, you won't have to worry about them later down the line. Use the limited registration on the pups you don't want bred, and make sure the buyer is aware of it. The deceptive puppy buyers who are wise to screening and know how to feed you the right answers will back off from the sale when you explain limited registrations.

Whats my point here? 1'd like to be put out of the rescue biz, just like all the others across the country who are involved in rescue. I know some people don't agree with rescue in the first place. They are concerned we are simply fixing a problem created by unscrupulous breeders .Well maybe to a certain extent, but they are not the whole problem. A lot of the dogs handled by the rescue are very nice, and chances are if they had their papers and pedigrees with them it would be a real eye opener.

Keller, DVM, MS Subject: OFA Update The OF A is moving toward establishing registries to identify normal individuals regarding thyroid and cardiac function. Experts in ther respective fields are formulating a standard dignosis protocol. The protocol for cardiac screening is near completion; however, ther has been some delay in the protocol for testing dogs for thyroid function.

The projected start up date of September 1, 1995 is not practical. The OFA is currently looking at begining each of these registries January 1, 1996.

For your information the AKC Board of Directors on August 8, 1995 has approved the following policy: "That after a specific date (to be determined) in order for a dog's OFA,CERF, and other such information to be printed on AKC registration documents and certified pedigrees the dog must be positively identified (microchip, tatoo) at the time the vet performs the test. The specific date to be determined bassed on discussions with OFA and CERF." The date has yet to be detenruned; however, the OFA feels that it is appropriate to notify the various breed clubs concerning this matter.

GWPCA NATIONAL SHOW FUTURITY LITTER REGISTRATION

GWPCA FIELD FUTURITY - NOMINATION FORM The GWP Field Futurity was first held in 1967 and was initially known as the Pheasant Futurity.

Its goal is to promote the breeding of better bird dogs by recognizing the breeder as well as the owner, of the winning dogs.

Litters born between July 1 and June 30 of the following year are grouped together for the running of this once in a lifetime (the dogs) stake. Pups may become eligible to compete in the Field Futurity in one of two ways. First a litter may be nominated by the breeder within 90 days of whelping. (This is considered the first forfeit $20.00.) All pups in the litter are then eligible to be renominated prior to their first birthday (this is the second forfeit $10.00) Pups from unnominated litters may be individually nominated prior to turning six (6) months of age.

These owners pay a one time forfeit of $30.00.

The Futurity is run in conjunction with the GWPCA National Field Events and entries will be mailed to all owners of properly nominated dogs.

The purpose of the Futurity is to stimulate and encourage breeder to give prime consideration to improving the GWP by planning their breeding programs to conform to the GWP standard and its intent, as well as retaining and improving the inherent hunting abilty of the German Wirehaired Pointer.

The show futurity will be open to GWP's whelped between April 1 of the year preceding the National Show and March 31 of the year of the National Show as illustrated below.

AKC Joins The Commputer Age Sometime in the near future the AKC will participate on the Internet. This could be extremely valauable for dog fanciers everywhere. Information that could be available would include judge availability, dates, pedigree research and on and on.

Check Your Paperwork -- at their Board meeting on June 23, 1995, the AKC denied registration to an Airedale litter which was produced by artificialy inseminating a bitch with fresh chilled semen without proper certification. Also be advised that if you are contemplating using a stud dog over 11 years old, there is special paperwork here too. Don't get caught after those little darlings hit the ground. Proper forms can be obtained from AKC. Do this before you breed your bitch.

Surgery May Make Your Dog Ineligible- AKC voted to add the following expansions to Chapter II, Section of Rules Applying to Dog Show: Procedures that would in and of themsel ves be considered a change in'appeara~ce by artificial means and make a dog ineligible for shows include, but are not limited to: 1. The correction of entropion, ectorpion, trichiasis or distichiasis.

2. Trimming, removal or tattooing of the third eyelid (nicitating membrane).

3. The insertion of an eye prosthesis.

4. Correction of hairlip, cleft palate, stenotic nares, or an elongated soft palate resection.

5. Any procedure to change ear set or carriage other than that permitted by the breed standard.

6. Restorative dental prodedures, the use of bands or braces on teeth, or any lateration of the dental arcade.

7. The removal of excess skin folds or the removal of skin

10. Alteration of the location of the testes or the insertion of an artificial testicle.

11. Altering the set or carriage of the tail.

Action Plan for the Future - In 1994, the AKC sent all member club delegates an AKC Action Plan for the Future survey.

The idea was to get input from member clubs as to where they thought AKC should be putting their emphases in the coming years.

One Hundred sixty-eight members clubs and seventy-two parent clubs responded. Breed specific issues comprised the major differences but three high priority issues came to the fore.

1. Maintain the integrity of the Stud book.

2. Widen support of canine health research, emphasizing the genetic welfare of purebred dogs.

3. Expand communications programs with dog people, clubs and the general public about the AKC and AKC activities.

1995 National Invitational Obedience Championship There were 82 entries with 74 dogs representing 40 breeds actually competing. The winner, a Golden Retriever OTCH Meadowpond's High on Chemo UDX owned by Lynn Heidinger, was featured on CNN, Chicago, the morning following the event.

Breed Standards Ownership - The Board voted to retain the copyrights to the published breed standards, but to confirm that the Parent Clubs have the unlimited and unrestricted right to the use or their standards ..

The Microchip and the OF A - . a proposal to require that animals be positively identified (microchip, tatoo) at the time of OFA, CERF testing or only those with positive ID would have certifications shown on AKC registration papers and certified pedigrees.

Top GunGWP In June and July, a terific team consisting of "Keelee" (Ch SGR Whispering Winds Am/Can CD, U-CD, SKC CD JH CGC) a GWP and her human Terrie Brooks, competed in two obedience tournaments.

The weekend of June 24 and 25 saw Keelee and Terrie compete in the United Kennel Club Top Gun Tournament in Kalamazob, MI. In Saturday's competition they placed 1st out of 90 entries winning a beautiful plaque and rosette. In Sunday's competition they placed 9th out of 90, winning yet another plaque and rosette. At the end of the tournament they totaled both days scores together and handed out Top Gun Awards for the top five winners in each class. Keelee placed 2nd overall for the weekend in Novice earning a silver medal. Also, the winners were featured in the July-August issue of Bloodlines Magazine.

The weekend of July 22 and 23 saw Keelee and Terrie compete in the Detroit-Windsor Obedience Tournament.

This tournament consisted of three trials to be totaled together at the end on Sunday. At this competition plaques and cash prizes were given out to the top 10 qualifiers.

Keelee tied for 6th place out of 54 entries with her final placement being 8th after they completed their runoff.

Congratulations to this fine team, who are proving the Wires can do well in competitive obedience.

Ch Ripsnorters Thunderheart wins Best In Show "Storm" received this honor at the Canfield Kennel Club show on August 4th. Dorothy MacDonald gave Storm the nod for the blue in the Sporting Group and paved the way for Judge Steven Shaw to hand him the red, white and blue ribbon for Best in Show.

Storm is owned by Jeff George, Lisa George-Clipse and Joe & Tootie Longo.He was handled to his win by Helen George.

He now joins that very elite group of Best In Show GWP's.

"Bearded Gundog of the Black Forest" In the August 1995 edition of the AKC Pointing Breed Field Trial News there was an article on the GWP. Written by Philip Steinkraus and titled "Bearded Gundog of the Black Forest" it covered the ancestry of our breed, spoke of Wirehair traits and temperment and covered the pecularities of our breeds coats.

The article did not quote any GWP owners or breeders, so I am not sure where Mr Steinkraus got his information. Most of the information was pretty basic and correct, but he seems to have gotten somewhat confused in places. He states;" The single biggest problem the German Wirehaired Pointer has faced as a breed is consistency in coaL Breeders typically expect only 20 percent of a litter to have really good coats, and up to 30 percent of a litter will have unacceptably poor coats. Dogs with poor coats are not registered and are generally sold at a discount as gundogs".

I would have to agree that coats are one of the most difficult aspects of our breed to produce correctly and consistently, but Ipersonaly have never heard of anyone not registering a bad coated dog and/or discounting it as a gundog. Apparently Mr. Steinkraus is under the opinion that" gundogs" are of lesser value than, what, "show dogs"?

While I love to see our breed get national press, it would be nice if whomever is writing the story would try to get the facts straight.

Imagine yourself in a room with several other people. You are standing visiting, minding your own business, perhaps engrossed in conversation or listening. Suddenly, the door bursts open and in runs another person. This person runs around to everyone and slaps them on the back, bumping into everyone in the process. Some people are kissed sloppily, some are hit with both hands on the chest in greeting.

What would your reaction be? Some people might stand and stare at the rudeness. Some people might react with a startled exclamation. Some people even might react by hauling off and smacking the intruder in the nose. No one would probably be very happy to have the intruder join the group.

Why then do we expect our dogs to act any differently? When a dog is being held or walked calmly on lead-anywhere-at home or in a public place, when a dog is at the Club House on lead with its owner and acting responsible or when a dog is under control in its own yard, it deserves the respect and courtesy of its own space not being violated. Any dog who is not on lead and runs into a building orup to another dog is in violation of the leashed dog's space. We would react if another person did it to us-we should not be surprised when our dogs react also.

If our dog is on lead and reacts with a grow lor snap at the intruder, he is immediatel y corrected. Shouldn't the correction be directed at the intruder instead? Many people have dogs who are fearful or protective and, recognizing this, keep them well under control on lead. They may act very well within the perimeter of the lead as long as it is not violated. Does this not make them a good canine citizen, obeying the owner even under what may be for them difficult circumstances?

Many of us have dogs who are friendly and used to playing together. This is great and should be encouraged. But at the same time, we should recognize that not all dogs wish to play with other dogs. Not all dogs like being bowled over by another dog's tailor having another dog's nose shoved into its posterior. I personally love dogs, but don't relish it, either! Let's remember that our dogs' manners are an extension of our own manners, and many people will love our dogs better if they are on lead and under control.

We all love our dogs so much we sometimes forget that not all people love dogs. Everyone has something they find repulsive. Some people cannot bear to see or touch a snake. Some people cannot bear to see or touch a spider. What is your personal fear or repulsion?

The feeling you may have upon seeing or being touched by that item is the same feeling many people have on seeing or being touched by a dog. While it may seem silly to us, that is their personal fear/repulsion, and it is just as genuine as your fear of something else. If we want to be able to take our dogs places without criticism or more restrictions than we already have to deal with, we need to recognize this and respect it. REMEMBER, A LEASH IS A SYNONYM FOR LOVE.
