TOP ROOFING TRENDS

(NAPSI)—While replacing your roof can be expensive, it may pay to know more about increasingly popular stone-coated metal. There are five good reasons:

1. Durability: Combining the strength of steel with the design versatility of crushed stone, stone-coated metal roofing offers a better-looking way to protect your investment. Thanks to its engineering, stone-coated metal stands up to harsh conditions, including fire, wind, hail, hurricanes, seismic activity, and extreme cold and heat.

2. Curb Appeal: Stone-coated metal comes in a collection of eye-catching contours and colors. Panels can resemble Mediterranean tile, hand-split wood shake, heavyweight shingle or even old-world Italian tile.

3. Long-Term Value: Stone-coated metal offers greater longevity— three—plus times more—and lower maintenance needs than most other roofing products. “In an average lifetime, a homeowner will need to replace an asphalt roof at least three times as often for the same cost of one stonecoated metal roof,” explained Mark Gallant, Vice President of New Product Development at DECRA Metal Roofing, the original stone-coatedsteelroofingsystem, withover60yearsofresearchand practical experience.

4. Keep It Cool: Metal roofing can help cool your home through air spacebetweenthepanelsandthe roof deck, reducing heat transfer. Some roofing colors can also reflect unwanted solar heat.

5. Save Money: A stone-coated metalroofcouldnetyouadiscount on your homeowners insurance. Check with your insurance agent.

Women spend considerably more time each day than men engaging in various household activities. According to the 2019 “American Time Use Survey” from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, women spend an average of 2.16 hours each day on household activities, while men spend an average of 1.39 hours on such pursuits. The survey identifies household activities as housework such as interior cleaning and laundry, but also other activities such as managing the household’s finances and preparing food. Women also spend roughly twice as much time as men caring for and helping household members. Such figures may reflect gender roles that date back several decades if not longer, even though family situations have long since changed as more and more women have entered and remained in the workforce. For instance, the BLS survey found that, in 2019, men spent an average of 7.96 hours per day working, while women spent 7.15 hours per day working. Such figures support the notion that many households can share household activities more equitably between spouses.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function.Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned.Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018.That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to KidsHealth.org, more than one-third of child injuries and deaths happen at home. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that most incidents at home occur where there is water, such as in the bathroom or kitchen; heat or flame, like in the kitchen or around the grill; toxic substances, like those found in medicine cabinets or beneath kitchen sinks; and in places where kids can fall, such as on staircases.

CHARRED GREEN BEANS WITH LEMON VERBENA PESTO

Serves 2 to 4

Green Beans

11/2 pounds slender green beans

2 teaspoons olive oil

Lemon Verbena Pesto

1 cup fresh lemon verbena leaves

(substitute fresh lemon balm leaves)

2 garlic cloves

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/4 cup pine nuts or English walnuts

1/2 cup olive oil

Fine kosher or sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Prepare a hot fire in your grill.

Toss the beans with olive oil and place in a perforated grill basket or wok set on a baking sheet.

For the Lemon Verbena Pesto, combine the lemon verbena, garlic, cheese, and nuts in a food processor and pulse to puree. Slowly add the olive oil with the processor running until the mixture thickens and emulsifies, about 1 minute. Season to taste with salt and pepper. The pesto will keep in the refrigerator for 7 to 10 days, or it may be frozen for up to 3 months.

Place the grill wok or basket directly over the fire and stir-grill, tossing the beans with wooden paddles or grill spatulas until crisp-tender, about 5 to 8 minutes. Transfer the grilled beans to a large bowl and toss with about 1/4 cup of the Lemon Verbena Pesto or to taste.

Q

A Master Gardeners

How do I prepare my soil for planting?

Properly preparing your soil before planting is essential for creating a thriving garden bed. To embark on this journey, begin by meticulously removing any pesky weeds or grass that may have taken root in the area. This will help ensure that your plants have ample space to flourish without any unnecessary competition for nutrients and resources. Once you have cleared the canvas, it’s time to indulge in the art of soil cultivation. Gently till or dig the soil to loosen its texture, allowing for improved aeration and drainage. As you delve into this task, consider adding a touch of magic in the form of organic matter. Compost, a delightful concoction of decayed organic materials, can work wonders for your soil structure and serve

as a nutrient-rich feast for your soon-tobe-planted garden gems. Generously incorporatethispreciousresourceintothe soil, allowing it to weave its enchantment and transform the landscape. Finally, as you put the finishing touches on your soil masterpiece, gently smooth the surface and offer it a refreshing drink of water, quenching its thirst and creating an inviting environment for your seeds or seedlings.

How often should I water my garden?

The rhythm of watering your garden is a delicatedance, influencedbyasymphony of factors that harmonize to create the perfect balance. Consider the unique needs of your plants, the composition of your soil, the whims of weather, and the

stage of growth your green companions find themselves in. As you traverse this journey, keep in mind that moderation is key. While providing ample hydration is crucial, drowning your garden in excess water can lead to soggy roots and a lack of oxygen, stifling the potential for growth. Instead, aim for a gentle and nourishing approach. Seek to deliver approximately 1 inch of water per week, a golden rule that provides ample moisture without overwhelming the delicate ecosystem beneath the surface.

Look for this weekly column! Your questions answered by the local Cornell experts.

However, remember that this is merely a guiding principle, and it’s vital to listen to the whispers of your garden. Observe the moisture level of the soil, and let it guide your hand as you adjust your watering routine. Remember, deep and infrequent watering encourages the development of robust root systems, anchoring your plants firmly in the ground and preparing them for a flourishing future.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES THAT ARE PERFECT FOR SENIORS

Hiking: Hiking provides a great workout and an ideal opportunity to spend time in an idyllic setting. The U.S. National Park Service notes that hiking helps individuals build stronger muscles and bones, improves their sense of balance, has a positive effect on heart health, and can decrease the risk of certain respiratory problems. Hiking is an especially attractive outdoor activity for seniors, as many parks feature trails with varying degrees of difficulty, ensuring there’s a trail for seniors whether they’re seasoned or novice hikers.

PAW’S CORNER

Home Renovations and Pets Just

Don’t Mix

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We have a contractor coming soon to renovate our kitchen. I plan to keep my cat, “Freya,” out of the way and in a separate room during the day. But at night, she’ll want to wander the house. How do I keep her out of the kitchen? -- Jim in Portland, Maine

DEAR JIM: Cats are pretty wily, and I’m sure Freya will try to find a way around any barriers you set up to keep her out of the kitchen.

e best way to dissuade her from exploring the construction area, therefore, is to tempt her away with better distractions. at means moving her food and water to a new location far from the construction area (but out of heavy foot traffic) and giving her treats and attention whenever she opts to stay in the living room with you or near her bedding and food.

At night, tighten the barriers around the kitchen -- if there’s a door, close it. If there is plastic sheeting up, tack it to surrounding walls and tape it to the floor. Put a sheet of plywood across the entrance if necessary.

Inside the work area, make sure that the contractors put away all sharp tools and cover any containers tightly. ey should clean up any debris at the end of each day and use a wet-dry vacuum to pick up sawdust and dirt. Any spills need to be cleaned completely. is will reduce the risk to Freya if she manages to get into the kitchen, and it’s just good practice.

Readers, how did you keep your pets safe during home renovations? Tell me at ask@pawscorner.com.

Apple Cider Vinegar Is a Surprising Help for Blood in Urine

DEAR DR. ROACH: Recently, I had anal cancer and was treated with chemo and radiation. The radiation burned my insides and severely damaged most of my internal organs. One of the aftereffects was occasional blood and small clots in my urine. A few months ago, both the frequency and amount of blood, especially the clots, increased dramatically. The size and number of the clots got so large that they blocked my urethra. During a visit to my urologist, he looked into my bladder and declared it “angry.” Then he told me the same thing every doctor has told me about every problem caused by my treatment: “It was caused by the radiation, and there is nothing that can be done.”

Shortly after this, I began to take unfiltered apple cider vinegar in hopes that it would improve my digestive problems. It helped a little, but the big difference was that I have not had a single recurrence of either blood or clots in my urine. Can you tell me if this is due to the vinegar or if it is just a coincidence? -- A.G.

ANSWER: No, I can’t definitively tell you whether the vinegar helped. It was probably by chance, but let me explain a little about it.

Rectal cancer is often treated with radiation, or combined chemotherapy and radiation, either prior to or after surgery. The dose of radiation is quite high compared to some other cancers, and the complications can be significant.

In addition to damage to the bowel and bladder, radiation treatment can damage the bones and bone marrow, leading to poor blood-cell production, infertility, premature menopause, and more cancer years later. On the other hand, radiation is used when it is expected to improve the cure rate of cancer. Still, the side effects can be challenging.

Hemorrhagic cystitis (bleeding from the bladder) can be caused by chemotherapy or radiation. It may start within a few months or as long as 20 years after radiation.

I am surprised your urologist did not offer any treatments, as there are certainly ones available. Although none of the currently available systemic drugs are proven to be very effective, hyperbaric oxygen is one treatment that is, at least, moderately effective. Medicines placed into the bladder and laser bladder treatments are sometimes tried as well.

I was unable to find any study that evaluated the effectiveness of apple cider vinegar. I am skeptical, but reports like yours of apparent improvement associated with its use might convince a researcher to conduct a study to determine whether it really is effective.

***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT NERVE INJURIES

What causes peripheral nerve injuries? Johns Hopkins Medicine indicates that peripheral nerve injuries can occur after suffering a laceration (a cut or tear in the nerve tissue), severe bruising, stretching, electrical injury, or drug injection injury. Gunshot wounds also can cause peripheral nerve injuries.

KEEPING A HEALTHY MOUTH WITH DIABETES

Diabetes patients are at higher risk for both gingivitis (gum disease) and periodontal disease (advanced gum disease). Our mouths are full of bacteria, and diabetics have a higher inflammatory response to bacteria, which causes loss of supporting tissue for teeth. This can invite bacteriacausing plaque underneath and around the gums, causing receding gums and loose teeth that may need to be removed. Dry mouth is also more common in diabetics because higher glucose levels in the gums reduce saliva, which helps wash away bacteria and food debris. These complications can be successfully managed by practicing good daily oral care (brush twice, floss once). Your dentist may recommend cleanings every three months to keep a closer eye on your oral health.

COMMON CAUSES OF TOOTHACHES

Tooth damage: Dental caries, or cavities, can cause toothache, as can tooth abscesses and tooth fractures.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain?

HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS

is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking.

• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.

• Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency.

• 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention.

• We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

POINTERS ON MOVING TO A NEW HOME BY RENTAL

TRUCK

(NAPSI)—Moving yourself to a new home by renting a truck can be easier than you may realize, if you heed these five facts and tips.

• Know when to go. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns.Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way.

• Be up on your truck. Make sure you can find and understand all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, so you have to be extra vigilant.

• Understand the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item.

• Know the “No-Zone.” Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop.

• Look into insurance. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance.

Learn More: You can find further moving facts and tips at www.PenskeTruckRental.com and (800) GO-PENSKE.

Traffic circle in [local town]

The traffic circle is annoying. What’s even more frustrating is that people don’t use blinkers when they’re exiting. It causes traffic to back up unnecessarily & makes delays for people to enter the circle. It’s annoying and rude. When you learned to drive, didn’t you learn to use your blinkers?

A good deed

Garbage filled park

I want to thank the kind and honest person who found my credit card at the Webster Post Office a few weeks ago and returned it to staff. It just proves that there are good, honest people who do the right thing. I appreciate it very much and thank you.

My husband and I noticed piles of garbage at our local Town Park. We both decided to pick it up, since there is a constant flow of people. We filled 2 garbage bags with shoes, soup containers, broken glass, clothes, coffee cups and doggy poo bags! Nasty!

Delicious Pizza!

Last Friday, I thought I ordered a pizza from a local pizza shop, but the order never made it through. I contacted the restaurant and the person who picked up the phone said that he would give me a free pizza, size large, including a brownie! If more people could be this kind I think that the community would be so much better! Thank you again!

When we brought this to the attention at the Town office across the street, the lady in charge of the parks department said that “The Park is closed but when it’s open they pick up.” When asked if we could throw the trash in their dumpster, she rolled her eyes and called someone else, while laughing at my husband. Pick up after yourselves so that others do not have to- clearly the Town could care less about the safety of others!

Celebrating ALL MOMS

MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION IDEAS

The Crafter Mothers who are avid crafters may enjoy a craft-themed Mother’s Day. A family crafting project can make for a fun afternoon and produce mementos that Mom will cherish for years to come. Dads and kids can plan the project in advance without Mom’s knowledge, arranging all of the materials ahead of time and setting up the crafting station the night before or while Mom is relaxing on Mother’s Day morning. Kids can even get a head start on the day by making their own craft for Mom and giving it to her as a Mother’s Day present. Dads can keep the craft theme going at dinner and get a laugh out of Mom by pouring her a craft beer when dinner is served.

Sarah Cedeño: Crafting Stories, Illuminating Lives

Sarah Cedeño, a widely published prose writer and SUNY Brockport adjunct teacher explores the essence of human existence, elevating the mundane and celebrating the perfectly imperfect in the world.

Cedeño remembers grade school journal writing assignments where she first dipped her pen in the ink of creativity. She says some details from her childhood writings still find their way into her work today. From those early writings spawned a career in creative writing. With a BA and MA in Creative Writing from SUNY Brockport, and an MFA in Fiction Writing from Goddard College, she now teaches at her alma mater and lends her expertise at Writers & Books in Rochester as well as a variety of other forums. She edits fiction for several literary magazines and has assisted Brockport’s English department in initiatives throughout the years.

While Cedeño primarily identifies as a prose writer, when she occasionally ventures into the realm of poetry, free verse serves as her canvas for expression. She says she doesn’t usually pay attention to form until she shapes/edits the poem. For nonfiction, Cedeno likes to play with borrowed forms such as Brenda Miller and Suzanne Paolo call hermit crab essays because they use the existing form (as if a shell) of another type of writing (such as a dictionary entry for grief that explores the loss of a parent or a how-to manual for dismantling a home that explores divorce).

Cedeño calls her writing process “candid and haphazard,” fueled by a penchant for hoarding images, ideas, and snippets of everyday life. She finds her muse among the mundane, seeing the world as full of “little metaphors” waiting to be unraveled. She explains, “ ere’s a running commentary in a lot of writers’ heads that lends itself to creative practice and helps you stay present.” She tries not to overthink as she writes but finds the editing/revision phase to be fun, weeding out “unhelpful parts” of a piece. She also says that “abandoning the notion of ‘perfection’” helps her process tremendously.

To Cedeño, writing “[makes her] a better human and viceversa. As a writer, you have to pay attention to the stories behind the trauma. What leads people/animals to do the things they do? What understanding can we offer or gain from the world around us?”

Cedeño tends to “circle around things I love and things that inspire me, collecting them in my everyday – local history, the campus, animals, and nature – and that usually coalesces into something.” She o en likes to reflect on women’s experiences, describing her MFA project that was a collection of short

stories about women’s lives in the 20th century inspired by local news stories. Cedeño uses her expertise to voice those stories.

Cedeño says, “Writing friends are essential for inspiration, conversation, and feedback” and credits SarahFreligh’sBootcamps for producing most of the writing in Cedeño’s first collection, Not Something We Discuss O en, essays on illness and womanhood. erecipientofmultipleadjunctinstructorawards,Cedeño is dedicated to sharing her insights and constructive criticism with the next generation. However, she says she likes summers’ break from the grading of student writing, “constantly viewing a piece of writing as an object to be modified or improved. e constant analysis can be exhausting and take away from the fun and inspiration of both reading and writing.”

To aspiring writers, Cedeño says, “First: Read. Also: If you never stop writing and never stop sending work out, you will never be able to say that you failed. And acceptances will come. You have to believe that (if your goal is to publish).”

For Cedeño, writing is not just a vocation but a way of life – a means of understanding the world and our place within it. rough her stories, she invites readers to explore the nuances of human emotion, to contemplate the stories behind trauma, and to embrace the imperfections that make us beautifully human.

To learn more about Sarah Cedeño and her upcoming projects, visit her website at www.sarahmcedeno.com. Her next book, a collection of short fiction, e Grand Scheme of ings, will be released in September 2025 from Harbor Editions.

COPING WITH THE SUICIDE OF A LOVED ONE

“I would rather be a poor man in a garret with plenty of books than a king who does not like reading…” ~ Macaulay

The person who loves to read is never alone…he has his choice of good friends, all available in the pages of books. Reading gives unlimited access to every point on earth, or even into far corners of the universe.

Honor the deceased. Don’t hesitate to share memories, photos and stories about your loved one who committed suicide. The Suicide Prevention Lifeline notes that some people find it helpful to write to a lost loved one, as doing so can provide a means to say some of the things survivors were unable to say before a loved one’s death.

Celebration of Life

Frances Mae (Rogers) "Fran" Morey

January 20, 2024

On Saturday, June 8th from 11:00 am - 2:30 pm, our family will be hosting a Celebration of Life Service for our Mom at Letchworth State Park, which was her favorite place to be. e location is the Open Highbanks Pavilion, located exactly 3 miles from the Mt. Morris entrance. Once you pass the pool, take a le into the parking lot, and drive straight across. We are the large pavilion. e park does not let seniors in for free on the weekends ($10.00 per car) so please carpool. We welcome those who have a connection, warm attachment or fond memories of our Mom. Make sure you bring your Mrs. Morey's stories to share with us. Dress casually, but also for the weather. ere will be a picnic so please let us know if you can attend by May 24th. If you can come, include the number of people who will be with you. RSVP to: allisonmhays@gmail.com or call: (518) 344-9666. In lieu of flowers, we suggest that donations go to the Alzheimer's Association. Go to:act.alz.org/albany/walk and look up my name: Allison Hays. en follow the prompts.

The man who has plenty of books is wealthy…wealthy in terms of travel, of adventure, of knowledge that he can put to use in countless ways. He is much better off than others, even a mighty king, who have never learned of the satisfaction to be found between the covers of a book.

We take great pains to arrange all floral tributes so as to obtain the full beauty and the most pleasing overall effect. No detail is overlooked.

Here’s a Tip

* Need to save money grocery shopping? Studies show that if you shop when the store is least busy, you’ll make smarter decisions. Try shopping at off-peak hours, such as later in the evening or early in the morning. Or try your store on Wednesday, traditionally the least busy day of the week.

* “I was making cookies last week and needed to roll out the dough. I couldn’t find my rolling pin anywhere. In a pinch, I pulled a bottle of wine off my wine rack and wrapped it tightly in plastic. It did the trick. I’m thinking I might just save the next empty bottle and clean the label off of it to use. I can store it right there in my rack!” -- O.V. in Oregon

* Add shredded veggies to tomato sauce to up the veggie quotient. Many vegetables can be added without adding many calories and will not change the taste that much. Try carrots, squash or sweet potatoes. You can even add a tablespoon or two of canned, pureed pumpkin.

ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE

Individuals change jobs for many reasons, including greater professional satisfaction, money or a change of location. The financial experts at The Balance say that people change jobs more frequently than many people may think, noting today’s average worker changes jobs 12 times during his or her career. It is not uncommon for workers to change careers several times in a lifetime. The notion that the job a person starts out in directly after graduation is the one that he or she will have for the rest of his or her life - or at the very least, several years - is no longer the norm. Many younger workers migrate between jobs for greater compensation and fulfillment. Older workers, too, are faced with career stagnation. A survey from the University of Phoenix School of Business found 59 percent of working adults say they’re interested in taking the leap of a midlife career change. Oncetheideaforacareerchange has been planted in a person’s mind, he or she may be anxious to jump right in. However, career coaches and other experts say that it is better to take the transition slowly and confirm that changing careers is truly the path to take. Finding the right time for the transition is equally important.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS

Work-related stress is an all too common problem in workplaces across the globe. According to the American Institute of Stress, 80 percent of workers report feeling stress on the job. Perhaps most troubling, nearly half of those people admit they need help in learning how to manage their stress.

The American Psychological Association notes that stressful work environments can contribute to a host of physical problems, including headache, sleep disturbances and short temper. Chronic stress can produce more serious consequences such as high blood pressure while also weakening sufferers’ immune systems. Stress at the workplace also can make it difficult to concentrate, which in turn can compromise workers’ abilities to perform at the peak of their abilities. That supports thenotionthatstressisaproblemforbothemployeesandemployers.Asa result, finding ways to reduce that stress should be a team effort.

Getting a handle on stress can be difficult. Since so many people trace their stress to the jobs they need to get by, they might think it’s impossible to address that stress without derailing their careers. But there ways for professionals to get a handle on their stress without negatively affecting their careers.
