Avoid peak travel times. The easiest way to find yourself stuck in Memorial Day traffic is to hit the road during peak travel times. Many people have embraced the “leave early” trend to holiday weekend travel, so the roads may be busier than drivers would expect on Thursday afternoon and evening. If it’s possible, drivers can hit the road prior to 3 p.m. Thursday. If work and kids’ school schedules make that impossible, delay your departure until late Thursday night or before the sun rises on Friday morning. Late at night or very early in the morning might not make for the most accommodating travel time, but roads tend to be the least congested at these times. Outdoor exercise can benefit both the planet and the people doing the exercising. By exercising outdoors instead of at home or at indoor fitness centers, men and women can reduce their carbon footprints. Exercising in the great outdoors does not require the use of energy-consuming fitness machines. In addition, when exercising outdoors during daylight hours, nature provides all the light men and women will need for their workouts, further reducing the average person’s energy consumption. And it’s not just adults who can benefit from spending more time outdoors. According to the Harvard Medical School, children are likely to get more exercise if they spend time outdoors than they are if they spend time indoors. A study from researchers in England used GPS devices and accelerometers to track the activity of 1,000 children. The children were more than twice as active when they were outside than they were when they were in inside. When children spend ample time outdoors, that, too, can benefit the environment. According to the National Institutes of Health, the average youngster spends three hours per day watching television and gets as much as seven hours of screen time each day. When kids are outdoors, they are less likely tobestaringatenergy-consuming screensanddevicesthantheyare when they’re indoors.

HOW TO HOST A MEMORABLE MEMORIAL DAY BBQ

Serve buffet style: One of the easiest ways to serve a number of people is to put the food out on long tables so that guests can pick and choose what they want. Place condiments and beverages in a separate area to keep the line flowing.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain?

HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS

is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking.

• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.

• Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency.

• 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention.

• We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

Immunotherapy for Peanut Allergies Still a Work in Progress

DEAR DR. ROACH: Why can’t people see an allergist and get desensitized to a peanut allergy? As a child, I was allergic to dust, pet hair, milk and other things, but I received treatments. I am not bothered by any of these now. It would seem prudent to desensitize people who have allergies that are life-threatening, like peanut allergies. -- S.S.

ANSWER: Allergy immunotherapy continues to be a commonly used and valid treatment for many allergies, including environmental allergies, insect venom allergies and, more recently, food allergies. The treatment can be used for peanut allergies, but it is certainly not perfect. So, it isn’t used very often.

The goal of immunotherapy is to get a person to tolerate the allergen that they have an allergic response to. This involves giving very tiny amounts of the allergen below the level that would trigger an allergic response. Over time and under extremely close observation, the amount of the allergen is increased. For allergens like pollen, they are typically given by injection under the skin (or by drops under the tongue), but for food allergens, they are given orally.

For peanut allergies in particular, reactions are common during oral immunotherapy. For about 1 dose per 1,000 under supervision in an allergist’s office, emergency treatment with epinephrine was required. Even during maintenance therapy at home, a reaction occurred 3.5% of the time, requiring treatment with 0.7% of all doses. Although oral immunotherapy is effective at getting people to tolerate peanuts, the effectiveness is not long-lived, with only 13% of people still being able to tolerate a peanut challenge three years after discontinuing maintenance therapy. (Thirty-seven percent of people who continued maintenance therapy were able to tolerate the peanut challenge.)

Until there are significant improvements in outcomes, I am unlikely to recommend oral immunotherapy for people with peanut allergies, unless they are unable to effectively avoid exposure to peanuts and they continue to have repeated reactions. Whether they’re on immunotherapy or not, patients are still advised to continue careful avoidance and have emergency treatment immediately available.

A new treatment for food allergies was just approved by the Food and Drug Adminstration. Omalizumab works by blocking the immunoglobulin IgE, which is critically important in allergic diseases.

The study showed that 47% to 80% of subjects who were treated with omalizumab for four months (given by injection every two to four weeks) were able to tolerate a standard dose of the foods that they were allergic to (peanuts, plus at least two other foods).

However, it appears that the benefit of the treatment does not persist after the treatment is discontinued, and it is intended for use in conjunction with food allergen avoidance to protect against accidental exposures.

In the future, combining this new medication with oral immunotherapy could be superior to using either alone, and it can help prevent serious or fatal allergic reactions from inadvertently being exposed to peanuts. Further studies are addressing this issue.

FRONT TOOTH CROWNS

Crowns are traditionally used to repair damaged molars by covering them with a protective cap that mimics durable tooth enamel. While less common, a front tooth may also receive a crown when damaged from decay or trauma. Significant tooth decay, moderate to severe damage from trauma, and root canals are all reasons a front tooth may require a crown. While root canals on front teeth are uncommon, they are simpler than a root canal on a molar. There are full crowns and partial crowns (called onlays), which are used when teeth have less damage. Full crowns cover the entire tooth and require the tooth to be filed down before placing the crown. Onlays only cover a fraction of the tooth.

We will be glad to discuss crowns, onlays, and other options

Here’s A Tip

* “ ere are so many different ways to pay bills these days that it can be hard to keep track of bills that need to be mailed. Here’s a great way to keep track of when to pay a bill so that it always gets there on time: I used to write the due dates of my bills on my calendar. Now I write the pay by date for each bill on the calendar. For bills that go in the mail, I write a date that’s a week ahead of when it is due. For bills that are paid online, I write a date three days ahead of the due date, and for automatic payments, I deduct the money from the paycheck BEFORE the dra is made. Now I never miss a due date.” -- T.F. in Indiana

* Change your air filter to save money. Be sure to change it once a month to keep your air conditioner working at its most efficient.

* You might not have a blackboard in your home, but keep a clean blackboard eraser around to get streaks off of freshly cleaned windows. It works really well in the car, too!

How can I improve the fertilityofmygardensoil?

The secret to a garden’s vitality lies within the hidden depths of its soil. To enhance the fertility of your garden soil, it is crucial to nourish it with a diverse array of nutrients and organic matter. One way to achieve this is through the magical art of composting. Composting is a transformative process where organic materials such as kitchen scraps, yard waste, and even fallen leaves are broken downbymicroorganismsintoarich, dark, and nutrient-dense soil amendment. By incorporating this black gold into your garden beds, you infuse the soil with a wealth of organic matter, enriching its

texture, improving its water retention capacity, and providing a buffet of nutrientsforyourplantstofeastupon. Another method to boost soil fertility is through the use of cover crops. These green companions serve as living blankets, protectingthesoilfromerosion, suppressing weeds, and fixing nitrogen from the air into a usable form for plants. Cover crops, such as legumes like clover or vetch, can be sown between growing seasons or in fallow areas of your garden. Once they have fulfilled their duty, they can be tilled into the soil, adding organic matterandnutrientsastheydecompose. In addition to compost and cover crops,

incorporating organic fertilizers can also work wonders for your soil fertility. Organicfertilizerscomeinvariousforms, such as well-rotted manure, bone meal, fish emulsion, or seaweed extract. These natural sources of nutrients provide a gentle and slow-release supply of nourishment to your plants, promoting healthygrowthandabundantyields. It is important to note that soil fertility is a dynamic process that requires ongoing care and attention. Regularly testing the pH level of your soil can help you understand its acidity or alkalinity, allowing you to make necessary adjustments to create an

optimal growing environment for your plants. Additionally, rotating your crops each season can help prevent nutrient imbalances and the buildup of pests or diseases, ensuring the long-term health andproductivityof yourgarden. So, as you embark on the journey of improving soil fertility, embrace the beauty and complexity of this hidden world. With a blend of composting, cover cropping, organic fertilizers, and thoughtful cultivation practices, you will create a soil ecosystem that teems with life and provides a nurturing foundation foryourgardentothrive.

Dancing Queen

Thank you so very much to the lovely pink clad lady who caught me dancing in the aisle at Dollar General on May 4th. Not only did she dance with me, she gave me a coupon as well! Thank you for not only making my day, but my birthday as well! Keep dancing, Queen!

Thank you for returning my purse

Last week after shopping at a local store I returned my cart to the cart corral, not realizing I had left my purse in the cart. While driving home and realizing (then panicking) I had left my purse in the cart I drove back to the store. My purse was not in the cart where I had left it so I went inside the store to the Customer Service desk. Yes! Someone had brought my purse in and everything inside was still there. At the time I didn’t think to ask if the person who did this had left a name. But I would like to let whoever it was know how very grateful I am and to thank them. It’s nice to know that there are still honest people out there. Thank you!

At times, during my husband’s recent hospital stay I felt invisible to some of the professional medical staff when they entered his room (thankfully most were fine). As a retired RN I feel it is crucial for professionals ( MD, RN, etc.) to also address caregivers in the room when they arrive to discuss treatment, surgery, or discharge care. At times a patient’s life may depend on it. My advice to the professionals is to take the blinders off and acknowledge and address the caregiver(s) in the room. My advice to the caregiver: don’t be ignored. Speak up with your questions until you get an answer. Find an advocate on the unit that you can work with. There is no need to go it alone or have unanswered questions. Fragmented care isn’t much better than no care.

Foolish Parenting

The surest sign of spring is back in our area. No, it’s not the returning Robins. It’s the Dad with a riding mower and the toddler balanced on his knee. For those of you who think a mower is an amusement park ride, it’s time to learn about all the children who have squirmed, bounced off, and ended up under the mower blades. About 9,000 children a year are injured in mower accidents. Of that number, roughly 15 are fatalities. Why bother strapping your kid into a car seat for a drive when you don’t value their lives enough to keep them away from a mower?

Puzzle Answers This Week

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My neighbor across the hall confronted me yesterday, accusing me of mistreating my dog. She said that “Cookie” whines and barks for hours whenever I am gone, and that I need to take him with me rather than leave him alone in the apartment. I work fulltime at an office that doesn’t allow dogs. When I travel, I take Cookie to a sitter. But is 8 to 10 hours away too long for a dog? -- Gerald in Brooklyn

DEAR GERALD: Dogs aren’t always happy about their owners going away for 8 hours a day. ey can develop separation anxiety. is can manifest as nonstop barking, whining or even acting out (like destroying your slippers, pooping in the living room or worse).

Try counterconditioning, a training method recommended by the ASPCA in its article “Separation Anxiety.” Each time you leave home, give your dog a treat or a puzzle toy with treats inside (which will keep him occupied for several minutes). When you get home, put the toy out of sight. e idea is that Cookie will associate your leaving with an enjoyable treat.

You can also desensitize him to your leaving by getting Cookie used to your “departure cues.” For example, if you always put on a coat and pick up your keys when you leave, have a training session where you do the same thing, but then sit down and watch TV instead of leaving. You’ll need to do this (and probably other moves) for several weeks, but it could help.

ese are very basic training exercises, and you may need to incorporate additional training. Check out the article on www.aspca.org, talk to Cookie’s vet and consider working with a professional trainer to help curb his anxiety.

A turtle is most safe when all of him is tucked into his shell, but he makes no progress until he sticks his neck out. There is always some hazard in everything we do. If we get up in the morning, we may slip in the shower and break a leg. If we never get out of bed, we may develop bedsores.

Life is a constant succession of risk-taking activities. We should not let this dismay us. We should do everything possible to minimize the risks, then go ahead, if we expect to make any progress.

Let us explain the advantages of making one’s own funeral arrangements well in advance of need. Phone for an appointment in our office or in the privacy of your own home, if you prefer.

MOMENTS IN TIME

The History Channel

On May 27, 1939, a ship carrying 937 Jewish refugees is turned away from Cuba. The ship sailed close to Florida, hoping to disembark there, but a State Department telegram stated that the asylum-seekers must first “await their turns on the waiting list and qualify for and obtain immigration visas.” After appeals to Canada also were denied, the ship was forced to sail back to Europe.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT MEMORIAL DAY

Freed slaves played a role in the establishment of Memorial Day. The American Civil War is the deadliest military conflict in American history, as the Union and the Confederacy each suffered more than 800,000 casualties by the time the war ended in 1865. According to History.com, as the war drew to a close, hundreds of Union soldiers who were being held as prisoners of war died and were buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp in South Carolina. After the Confederate surrender, more than 1,000 now-freed slaves honored those recentlydeceasedUnionsoldiersduring a ceremony in which they sang hymns and distributed flowers. The ceremony was dedicated to the fallen soldiers and served as a precursor to what is now celebrated as Memorial Day.

GREAT GIFTS FOR DEAR OLD DAD

Father’s Day is right around the corner, and the time has come once again to begin searching for a gift for dear old dad. Father’s Day gift shoppers have long since abandoned the notion that a new necktie is what dad really wants, but finding a gift that expresses your love and appreciation for the old man can still prove somewhat challenging. Oftentimes, the best gifts are the ones that fulfill a need or want, and Father’s Day gifts are no exception.

Handle limited seats with courtesy. Many schools limit the number of seats each student can reserve for guests. This can make it tricky when there are a number of people who are worthy of an invite. Explain to friends and family who you cannot invite that you would love to have them there but are restricted by ticket allotments. Try to have both sides of the family represented. Gilbert W. Blue:

Reflections

on a Life of Service and Integrity

Long-time resident, Gilbert W. Blue, was known by many as “Gib.” Gib was born in Bergen on December 3, 1924, the oldest child with three younger sisters. He was fi h generation from Scotland ancestors. He grew up on the farm on the corner of Apple Tree Ave. and Lake St., near the Artistic Motel. ere was an apple orchard east of the property that ran all the way to Rte. 33A. e 81-acre farm included the property where Garber Collision stands, part of Liberty Pumps land, along with the land where 490 is in Bergen.

Gib went to the Bergen School on Rochester Street from Kindergarten through high school graduation from the same school building. He graduated in January of his senior year, along with seven classmates, so they could enter the military.

He wanted to join the Air Force, but because he was colorblind, he wasn’t eligible. Instead, he joined the U.S. Army. During WWII, he was a light machine gunner and squad leader. He was shot twice during the war, once in the arm and the other in the upper thigh. A er his first injury, he spent Christmas in a hospital in Paris. He was honorably discharged and decorated with a Purple Heart medal, WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal with one bronze battle star, and the American Campaign Medal.

A er his service, Gib went to Cornell University. At Cornell, his intention was to be a large animal veterinarian, but because of his service injury he wasn’t able. In his first semester, his mother died, and he returned to the family farm to help with his three younger sisters. His father died and the family farm was sold in part to NY State for Route 490.

Gib married Jean Lutrell and they had three children, two daughters and a son.

office moved to Buffalo Street (now the location of Mike’s Gym). Some of Gib’s deputy clerks included Bev Crosier, Mary Shuler, Sharon Lehmann, and Dorothy Sackett. In 1986, Gib retired at 62 years old, as he had Tier I status and was encouraged to retire.

Gib was fair, kind, and well-respected, a staple of Bergen. Most Friday nights you could find him and his family at the Rose Garden for dinner. Occasionally they traveled to the Red Osier for Gib’s favorite creamed cod on toast. Gib officiated the wedding of Joe and Maria Chimino and in 1961 Gib won the best beard for the Bicentennial in Bergen. A er his wife passed away, Gib spent many mornings at the Bergen Farm Market with his buddies, Dick Partridge and George Constatine.

ey moved to 66 S. Lake St., where he lived most of his life.

Gib was the Bergen Village Clerk Treasurer and the Town Justice from 1947-1986. No one ever ran against him for town justice, which speaks volumes about his character and dedication to his title. e Village Clerk’s office originated where the Byron-Bergen Library now stands. Eventually the office moved across from Ralph & Rosie’s and shared space with Leon Katzen, Bergen’s attorney. is is currently the building where Brett Ashley Wilcox has her business. From there, the

Gib passed January 21, 2006 at the age of 81 and was buried in Mount Rest Cemetery in Bergen.
