* A common issue with blood donation -- along with other types of charitable contributions -- is that if donors don’t know the recipient, it’s harder to convince them that donating is beneficial. Therefore, in an effort to encourage more young people to give blood, Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden, sends a text when their donation has been dispensed to someone in need, providing proof that it’s going to good use.

PERIAPICAL TOOTH ABCESS TREATMENT

A tooth abscess is a pocket of pus caused by a bacterial infection. A periodontal abscess occurs in the gums, and a periapical abscess occurs at the tip of the tooth’s root. A periapical abscess is usually caused by a severe dental cavity, crack, chip, or injury that has gone untreated. A deep opening in the tooth allows bacteria to travel through the tooth’s pulp and down to the tip of the root where an abscess forms. An abscess can be quite painful and must be drained to treat the infection. Treating a suspected abscess early on can help avoid a root canal or tooth extraction. Failing to treat an abscessed tooth can lead to a life-threatening infection.

A tooth abscess is the body’s way of announcing that something is wrong and needs attention.

Ignoring the pain means you also ignore the underlying problem, and treatment becomes a more serious undertaking. Be smart! For excellence in dental care from a caring staff committed to your comfort, wellbeing, and sunny smile, call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL for an appointment AT 585.343.4246 Emergencies are also welcome at our full-service, state-of-the-art dental office located at 6 Batavia City Centre.

P.S. If a tooth abscess ruptures, you may experience a sudden bad taste of salty, foul-smelling liquid inside your mouth.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Diabetics Receive Great Results From a Plant-Based Diet

DEAR DR. ROACH: Your recent column about treating diabetes left me wondering. Diabetes, as I understand it, is usually a result of too much sugar being consumed. But consuming carbohydrates is not that different because they are quickly converted to sugar through the human chemical processes. So, why are you promoting a plant-based diet that is high in carbohydrates?

Consuming protein, which is easily obtained by eating meat, seems to be the answer to reducing the consumption of simple and complex carbohydrates that are quickly converted to sugar in our body. I’ve switched to a high-protein diet (both plant and animal protein), and my blood sugar has been very well-controlled for a couple of years. -- F.B.

ANSWER: Diabetes is not a result of consuming too much sugar. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder where the cells that make insulin are destroyed by the body. Type 2 diabetes is a disease of insulin resistance and a relative inability to secrete insulin in response to a sugar load.

In a person with Type 2 diabetes, consuming too much sugar in a short time overloads the body’s ability to respond, so their blood sugar goes up. It is persistent high blood sugar that is responsible for most of the damage to the kidneys, eyes, blood vessels and nerves.

I am careful about what I mean by a plant-based diet. While it’s true that a diet consisting entirely of maple syrup and orange juice would be extremely bad for a person with diabetes because of the concerns about blood sugar that you raised, a plant-based diet that is mostly vegetables, whole grains, legumes, fatty fish and nuts/seeds with moderate amounts of whole fruits does not raise blood sugar more than a standard Western diet.

The high fiber content of the legumes, whole grains and vegetables prevents rapid absorption, and the protein and healthy fat in nuts and fatty fish likewise slow stomachemptying. Finally, there is good evidence that people with diabetes have excellent results with this kind of diet.

You are right that protein is important for a person with diabetes, but many high-protein diets based on meat also have high amounts of saturated fat, which increase the risk for heart blockages. In addition, saturated fat is a major cause of disease and death in people with diabetes. However, it is possible to have a healthy, high-protein diet with care.

***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

VENT BRIGHTER

Thank you

Library Etiquette

While shopping at the Geneseo Dollar Store, I had to go back out to the car because I had forgotten my money. A woman inside paid for my laundry detergent when I got back. I want to thank her. Her kindness is appreciated. I will pay it forward.

A Sincere Heartfelt Thank You

My pregnant granddaughter was visiting April 28th from Michigan. She had a problem with a front tire and the tire shop was hesitant about only doing 1 tire on a four wheel drive. My granddaughter was not able to afford 2 tires and a front end alignment. A female customer graciously paid for both tires and the alignment. This lady will never know how very much her generous gift was appreciated. May God bless you. Thank you so much.

Please teach your children how to act in a library! School age children are coming in, talking loudly, watching/listening to rude videos/music on high, leaving trash and being very disruptive! The library is a public space for all, not a playground or circus.

Sidewalk Falls

I moved from the city to this lovely small village. I am handicapped and need a walker to get around. Several times I have tripped over uneven slabs of pavement. I took a tumble twice this past Winter. Complete slabs are crushed. Who is responsible for the sidewalk?

Renee Hungerford: A Beacon of Change in Community Empowerment

In the heart of Genesee County, there resides a force of change, a catalyst for community empowerment. Renee Hungerford, Executive Director/CEO/CIO of Community Action of Orleans and Genesee since 2020, embodies this transformative spirit. With a background in data analytics and a passion for healthcare, Renee has brought a unique blend of expertise to her role, redefining the agency’s mission and impact.

Renee’s journey to Community Action is a testament to her dedication to making a difference. Born and raised in Buffalo, Renee moved to Orleans County in the 90s, raising daughters Cassandra, Tiffany, and Cheyenna-Rain with her husband Mark. Now residing in Waterport with their two dogs, Renee says she loves Lake Ontario. “ ere’s no place I would rather be,” she says. She plays saxophone in the Batavia Concert Band, playing free concerts throughout the summer at Centennial Park. She loves seeing the crowd come out to enjoy the music and she loves playing with the talented musicians. Professionally, she always emphasizes being “part of the solution,” and she volunteers for Lyndonville’s Lion’s Club, serves on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the New York State Community Action Association (NYSCAA) and the Finger Lakes Performing Provider System (FLPPS).

A er three decades in the banking industry, when she was asked to relocate, Renee opted instead to pivot her career to healthcare, where she could use her skills and expertise in data analytics toward a “perfect blend of public health, epidemiology, and data analytics.” Earning a Master’s Degree in Health Informatics, she was determined to help fix the broken healthcare system. She says she developed “a real understanding of how important it is to address the social determinants of health like safe housing, food insecurity, and health literacy, to improve health outcomes” in her first position at Oak Orchard Health. As the CEO position at CommunityActiondrewherin, shewasexcitedtohelpimpact people’s health outcomes even more in the new position. Since assuming her role in October 2020, Renee spearheaded initiatives to address root causes of poverty and improve health outcomes in the community. Her approach focuses on recognizing that holistic solutions are essential for sustainable change. Community Action offers a comprehensive suite of programs, including Head Start, Case Management, EmergencyServices,Weatherization,SocialCare, athri store, food pantries, childcare subsidies / referrals, job development, tutoring, and more, all designed to empower individuals and families on their journey toward self-sufficiency.

One of the agency’s flagship programs, the Axis of Care, partners with healthcare entities such as Oak Orchard Health to deliver vital health services to underserved populations, bridging the gap between medical care and social services.

fresh, locally sourced foods.

Renee is dedicated to serving the community. She acknowledges the uphill battle of effecting meaningful change in the healthcare system but finds solace in the knowledge that even on the most challenging days, her team knows they make a difference in the community. Coming to the agency amidst the pandemic and while the agency grieved the death of her predecessor, Renee explains, “We have come a long way working toward a mindset of being one strong agency. We continue to adapt and improve every day.” Renee glows about her incredible team, too, saying, “ e people that work at our agency are special indeed. ey take genuine care of our communities.”

As she looks toward the future, Renee envisions a community where partnerships flourish, resources are maximized, and individuals are empowered to overcome barriers to success. With unwavering determination and a compassionate heart, she leads Community Action of Orleans and Genesee on a path of progress, embodying the belief that together, we can build a brighter tomorrow.

HOW TO AVOID THE COLD COMFORT OF A DRAFTY HOUSE

For those who live in older homes, the transition to colder weather can be extra disheartening, as the vision of expensive heating bills, chilly rooms and drafty windows dance in their heads. However, it’s easy to change the outlook fromcoldtocozywithafewsimple DIY solutions.

The most effective way to improve the comfort level in your home is to properly insulate. Insulation can beinadequateinolderhomes.Over time, it can settle and compact, creating gaps. Topping up attic insulation will help keep the warm air in, reducing heating bills and preventing stress on your furnace. For easy installation, homeowners andprofessionalsalikerecommend a stone wool batt insulation. For attics, aim for an r-value of R-50 or adepthof16inches.

A little preparation can go a long way to keep the cold at bay. Seal out drafts by replacing worn weatherstripping and caulking along windows, doors, baseboards, and trim. For other ways to beat the cold, consider inexpensive window insulation kits along with thicker drapes, and don’t forget to reverse ceiling fans to push warm air back down.

What Expecting Parents Can Do To Make Their Homes Safer

• Conceal cables and cords. Cable and cord concealers are inexpensive and easily installed. Often used to cover cords hanging down from mounted televisions, concealers also can be used to hide cords coming from computers, lamps and other items that can pose a threat to young children.

• Avoid hand-me-down kids’ furniture. The older a piece of furniture is, the less likely it is that the item will meet current safety guidelines. Some parents may be tempted to let their children sleep in the same crib they slept in as kids decades ago, but it’s safer to eschew nostalgia in favor of products that meet the latest safety standards.

• Get rid of potential choking hazards. Prior to bringing their babies home, expecting parents can remove all small trinkets and other items that curious children may want to put in their mouths. When buying toys for kids, read the packaging to make sure each item is safe for babies and avoid buying or accepting any gifts with small pieces.

• Store all medicines on high shelves behind cabinet doors. Vitamins and medicines should be stored on high shelves behind cabinet doors. If kids can see them, they’ll likely try to grab them. Hiding medicines on high shelves behind closed cabinet doors reduces the risk that kids will be poisoned and suffer a fallrelated injury.

DID YOU KNOW?

Many an amateur landscaper has encountered grubs while tending to their lawns, but even the most attentive green thumber may have a lawn infested with grubs and not know it. According to the pest and weed experts at Roundup® , grubs often go unnoticed until late summer, when they’ve already done substantial damage to a lawn. Oddly enough, one of the telltales signs of a grub infestation is not the grubs themselves but the animals looking to dine on them. Fully grown grubs make for hearty meals, so homeowners who notice raccoons, skunks, armadillos, and/or birds digging up their lawns may have a grub infestation. That’s because these unwanted guests like to dine on mature grubs who have spent summer feasting on organic matter in the soil. Another sign of a possible grub infestation is a lawn that feels spongy when stepped on. Patches of dead grass that peel back easily are a sign that grubs have eaten the roots that keep healthy grass in place.

Chain-link fences may not add the aesthetic appeal homeowners are looking for, but they are relatively inexpensive, durable and functional. Chain-link fences are low maintenance, though homeowners looking for fences to provide some privacy may need to get creative if they install chain-link fencing. Planting flowers, shrubbery or trees near chain-link fences can add some aesthetic appeal and a little privacy.

to grow. Too much sunlight and plant blades can scorch. Too little sunlight and grass may turn brown and die. Although there are shade-tolerant varieties of grass, homeowners also can explore alternative landscapes. Work in a garden bed or create a design that utilizes gravel or mulch. Avoid aggressively pruning back trees to give the lawn more sunlight in that area, as this may just damage the trees.

DID YOU KNOW? The first International Special Olympics Summer Games were held at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 20, 1968. The games were the brainchild of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, who first proposed the idea of nationwide sports contests for young people with intellectual disabilities in November of 1966. Kennedy Shriver had spent years advocating for young people with intellectual disabilities, even opening a summer camp for such youngsters at her home in suburban Washington, D.C. in June of 1962. More than 200 events were offered at the first Special Olympics, including water polo, the 100-yard swim, the 50-yard dash, the broad jump, and the high jump.

STRATEGIES TO DISCONNECT MORE OFTEN

Change your reading habits. E-reader enthusiasts may have access to millions of books at their fingertips, but that access could come at a steep cost. Distractions abound when reading books on tablets, smartphones and e-readers. The internet is only a swipe or two away when reading e-books, while print books provide no such access to the internet.Tablets and e-readers employ the he same notification system as smartphones, so readers who insist on going the digital route can turn those notifications off before cuddling up with a good book. But that might not be enough, as readers can still visit the home screen of their devices and begin browsing the internet. Print books are ideal for those who want to read with as little device-related distractions as possible.

STEPS INVOLVED WITH ESTATE PLANNING

Estate planning should begin early in a person’s life, especially for young parents. It’s easy to talk about saving for a home or retirement, but it’s not so simple to discuss who will care for your children should you die while they are still minors.

Those who are not able to sort through these answers on their own should enlist the help of an attorney or a financial adviser, both of whom can take some of the emotion out of the discussion and put it in more practical terms.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT GREYHOUNDS

Some retired racing greyhounds may exhibit behaviors typical of puppies. The Greyhound Project notes that, thanks to their early training, retired racing greyhounds have never been without the company of other greyhounds. As a result, when spending time alone for the first time in their lives, retired greyhounds may make up for lost time as a puppy by exhibiting puppy-like behaviors such as chewing. This need not cause alarm in new greyhound parents, as the dogs typically outgrow the behavior very quickly.

Pet Allergies Blossom in Spring

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 7-year-old cat, “Sunbeam,” has a tough time in the spring when the pollen starts to fly. He sneezes frequently, his eyes water and he scratches hot spots on his skin. I’ve tried many things to reduce the allergens in the home: I vacuum every other day, run an air purifier near where he sleeps and I brush his coat daily. TITLE: None of that seems to help. What else can I try? -- Harry in Pittsburgh

DEAR HARRY: You’re doing your best to reduce airborne allergens, and that’s great. However, because it doesn’t seem to be helping, it’s time to enlist the help of your cat’s veterinarian.

e vet can suggest some other ways to reduce allergens in the home, and will consider that Sunbeam is reacting to more than one issue -- not just pollen, but indoor dust or even the food he’s eating. ey will also check for any secondary issues that may be contributing to Sunbeam’s discomfort, like an ear infection or yeast infection.

Short-term treatment with a prescription medication, like a steroid or an antihistamine, may be necessary during the worst part of the season. ese will help reduce the intense itching and eye irritation, and should help clear up hot spots on his skin.

At home, try adding fish oil and probiotics to your cat’s food -- these supplements can help with itchy, flaky skin conditions. (I give my cat a teaspoon of plain yogurt daily to balance his gut bacteria.) An occasional bath, twice a month or so, using a pet shampoo that contains oatmeal will soothe his skin and wash away any lingering allergens on his coat. (c) 2024 King Features Synd., Inc.

DID YOU KNOW? A study from the Gap Year Association found that 77 percent of students who take a gap year do so between high school and college. Parents may not know how to react when their soon-to-be or newly minted high school graduates bring up the idea of taking a gap year, but additional findings from the GYA’s “National Alumni Survey” might inspire parents to look at gap years more positively. For example, the survey, the findings of which were based on the responses of hundreds of American and Canadian citizens who had taken gap years in the past, found that 98 percent of respondents indicated their gap years helped them develop as a person, while 96 percent felt their gap years improved their self-confidence. In addition, 84 percent of respondents felt that they acquired skills to be successful in their careers during their gap years. Perhaps of most interest to parents of high school students contemplating gap years is that 73 percent of survey respondents felt their gap years increased their readiness for college and 57 percent said their gap years helped them determine what they wanted to study in college.

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs, lightly beaten

1/4 cup sour cream

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Preheat the oven to 350 F. Butter

a 9-inch round cake pan with the 1 tablespoon room temperature butteranddustwiththegranulated sugar and tip out any excess.

Place the bananas on a small rimmed baking sheet and roast for 15 minutes. Remove and set aside to cool.

In a small bowl, combine the pecans, brown sugar and cinnamon. Set aside.

Sift the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and nutmeg through a fine-mesh strainer into a medium bowl.

In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat together the butter and sugar on low speed until light and fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula, then add the roasted bananas, sour cream and vanilla. Beat until incorporated.

With the mixer running on low speed, spoon in the flour mixture and mix until just combined.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spatula. Sprinkle evenly with the pecan topping. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean with a few crumbs attached. Let cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS

Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacationdaysin2015.Vacationisnotjustatimetogetaway,butavaluable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.
