Catan, Monopoly, and Monopoly “Cheater’s Edition” all going on regularly.

Parent to Parent Interest in board games tends to come and go for my kids. All of them like to play board games, but they don’t often think about them. Until they do. And then they will play a lot for a few weeks before they get busy with other things again. This holiday season has been one with a high level of game-playing. It started during Thanksgiving week when we went up to Michigan and visited my Grandma. There was a Scrabble game sitting out at the nursing home, and Scrabble is one of Grandma’s favorite games, so we all played with her. She won of course, although we did let her get away with including proper nouns a few times. Then ever since, and especially over Christmas break, we’ve had Scattergories, Apples to Apples, Settlers of

Eleven-year-old Haylee has been the leader in organizing and pushing for people to play various games with her. About a week before Christmas, she asked what my favorite board game is, and I told her about Cranium, a game that we used to own, but didn’t have anymore. She thought that sounded fun and asked me to buy a new set. So I found one on Amazon, and she played it for the first time on Christmas Eve.

a little while, and the timer was almost done when her teammate guessed “hot tub”. Haylee piped up, “Oh, that’s so close – it’s a kind of hot tub!”. And so seconds before time ran out, they got the answer. Then Hanna’s team had a “fill in the blank” puzzle. Haylee hadn’t seen the answer to this one, but as the timer was winding down, she figured it out and in a very loud whisper said to me, “I think it’s ‘Pilates’.” She was right, and Hanna of course overheard her, and so Haylee had once again helped an opponent to beat the timer!

Haylee and I were on a team, and we got off to a really slow start – I had bought the adult version, where before, I think we had owned the family version that is a little easier for kids. But she got the hang of it after a few rounds, and we actually might have won if not for a few mishaps.

We might want to work on some basic strategy in the future. But hey, she had a good time. And the other teams were all very grateful for Haylee’s help – especially Hanna, since her team ended up winning.

The first came during one of the “all play” activities. I had to draw the phrase “baby steps” with my eyes closed. So I drew a baby, which Haylee got right away. Then I drew a stick figure and some motion symbols, and she guessed “walking”. She kept saying “baby walking” loud enough for the rest of the table to hear her, and in the meantime, her sister Hanna had been drawing a scene from the movie “What About Bob” for her uncle. He put the two things together and beat us to the answer.

Jennifer

Until next time,

A few turns later, one of the other teams was doing a sculpting activity. Haylee had been the one to read the card, so she knew the answer, “Jacuzzi”. The sculptor took

6 Helpful Mentoring Tips

Ja n u a ry FU N FACTS

JANUARY 17, 1706

Benjamin Franklin was born on January 17th in Boston. Although he was one of 20 children and couldn’t afford to go to school past the age of 10, Franklin would become one of the most famous Americans of all time. Known as the “First American”, Benjamin Franklin was an inventor, scientist, civil servant, diplomat, philosopher, musician, businessman, writer, and publisher. Franklin used his time, talents, and money to start many important services, which we still use today. He began the first public library, the first postal system, the first volunteer fire company, the first hospital, the first college in Philadelphia, and the first police department.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’” Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the King Holiday to serve their neighbors and communities. The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the President’s national call to service initiative.

January is National Mentoring Month (NMM), the time each year when our nation spotlights the importance of mentors and the need for every child to have a caring adult in his or her life. When you serve as a mentor, you will enrich your own life as much as you do the life of a child. To become a mentor, you don’t need special skills, just an ability to listen and to offer friendship, guidance and encouragement to a young person. Here are six helpful mentoring tips to help you get started. 1. Encourage, praise, and compliment — even the smallest of accomplishments! 2. Be concrete in explanations 3. Be straight, honest, and sincere with children (they pick up on falseness and shallowness) 4. Ask their opinions and have them take part in decision-making 5. Be enthusiastic — it’s contagious! 6. Be fair — children notice if things aren’t equal

January 21, 2019

Approx 36,000 pints of blood are used each day in the United States. January has been designated National Blood Donor Month to raise awareness during a time of year when blood supplies often fall to their lowest levels. Giving blood is a way to support the community by helping to ensure that a stable inventory will be available in Hospitals. Blood transfusions can save the lives of premature babies, cancer patients and victims of trauma or illness.

Over 1 billion sold

It is estimated that Elvis Presley has sold over one billion record units worldwide, more than anyone in record industry history. Elvis Presley was born in a two-room house in Tupelo, MS on January 8, 1935. On his 11th birthday, Elvis genuinely wanted a bicycle. However, his parents could not afford the bicycle, so he settled for a guitar. This simple gift changed Elvis’ life and helped fuel his desire to be a singer.

DUNGY DIARIES

I am troubled by a society that devalues life directly and insidiously and then markets that idea to our kids through video games, music, movies, and television. This, in turn, contributes to kids not realizing that life should be respected, nurtured, and protected. I am concerned about kids who see themselves as cosmic accidents and haphazard, random events. It’s the opposite of how to build selfconfidence and self-worth. If life is seen as accidental, then wasting my life, or taking someone else’s may not be that big of a deal.

sentenced to prison. Somehow we have got to reverse this trend, because if a child feels that no one really cares about him, what do you think he begins to feel about himself? Our world has already gone too far in that direction and I think the best way to reverse this trend of thinking is to start getting our children to see themselves as God sees them. Words are powerful; they can stick in kids’ minds for a very long time. If you desire your kids to have a healthy self-image, here are several things you need to tell them.

The summer of 2008 was the worst three-month stretch in the city of Indianapolis in terms of homicides. Most of the suspects were young men and the sad thing is with each killing, we actually lost two people: the victim, who is gone from this world, and the perpetrator, who may ultimately be

it is good and desirable because that’s the way God intended it to be.

They are known and cared about.

God doesn’t sleep, and He cares for your kids. God knows their needs and their desires before they can ever ask. He cares about them in their day-to-day living, in their excitement and in their grief, in their ups and in their downs.

What God says about them.

Psalm 139 13-18 states, “You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my

mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous – how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day has passed. How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! I cannot even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me!”

Ask your kids what they think.

Now stop and think about that for a minute. I don’t know what your kids have experienced in their life or how those experiences have made them feel about themselves, but after reading those words to them – that God cares about them in every circumstancethey should think about themselves differently. I believe God cares about all of us- He cares about you and about your kids. Life is precious and should be viewed as such.

10 Family Resolutions to Keep This Year The beginning of a new year carries with it the inevitable looking back paired with the hope of a fresh start and second (or third) chances. As the clock moves ever closer to midnight on December 31st, we feel the need to promise to do better than we did last year. We resolve to lose weight, to be on time, to be better with our money…to stop smoking or drinking or swearing. By the time January 31st rolls around, many of us have had a relapse in our resolve. Part of the reason that we fail to keep these resolutions is that we attempt to tackle them on our own. So, this year, instead of making an individual promise that you’ll soon forget, why not make some resolutions as a family? You help hold each other accountable and can grow closer in the process. All Pro Dad would like to suggest 10 Family Resolutions to Keep Next Year. 1  A Weekly Family Game Night. Take a trip to the local bowling alley for a game. Or pile up the board games on the dining room table and have a tournament. The act of playing together fosters feelings of fun and family. Playing board games can teach children important social skills such as taking turns and how to be a good winner or loser. They also learn a lot about interpersonal communication as you talk and laugh together while you play the game. 2  Commit to One Healthy Eating Change. Trying to make your diet healthy overnight isn’t realistic or smart. Make small steps, like adding a salad (full of different color vegetables) to your diet once a day or switching from butter to olive oil when cooking, or skipping sodas altogether. As your small changes become habit, you can continue to add more healthy choices to your diet.

3  Turn off the TV. Television is a wonderful invention and not bad in and of itself, but in many homes, we use the TV as a buffer from communication. So, turn it off when you’re eating meals together. If you’re really feeling adventurous, try going without television one night a week. Who knows, you might discover that you don’t miss it at all. So take the plunge and try not watching TV. 4  Eat Dinner as a Family. Sharing a meal together, breakfast, lunch or dinner, is one way a family builds its identity and culture. Stories are shared, jokes are told, and family values are instilled. The act of coming together for a common meal teaches the importance of sharing and compromise, and helps younger members of the family understand problem solving and listening skills. 5  Be Quick to Apologize and Quick to Forgive. Let’s face it—we all mess up. When you mess up, be quick to apologize. When it’s your turn to be hurt, be quick to forgive. Forgiveness is good for your body, your relationships, and your place in the world. That’s reason enough. 6  Exercise Together. This resolution works well with #1 – 4. You could have a game of tennis, or miniature golf. Get out in the yard and play ball! Point out your end zones and have a game of scrimmage. Don’t have a football? Toss a Frisbee. The whole idea is to get outside and do something you and your family will enjoy.

7  Revisit your Childhood. Get down on the ground and roll around with your kids. Build a fort in the family room with couch cushions and sheets. Tell knock-knock jokes to each other. Just because you’re a grown-up, doesn’t mean you can’t be silly and have imaginative fun with the kids. In those moments of silliness, you can have serious bonding and build bridges for heart-felt communication. 8  Do Something New as a Family. Routine is a great thing when it comes to families, but that doesn’t mean to have to get stuck in a rut. Make a point to do something new as a family. Doing something new together will give you a common memory…so get out there and get adventurous together. 9  Make each Child Feel Special. It’s great to do things as a family unit, but it’s equally important to celebrate the individuality of your kids. Make a resolution to do something once a month with each of your children. Do something together that will make them feel special and valued. 10  Nurture your Relationship with your Wife. The best thing you can do for your children is to nurture your relationship with your wife. When your kids know that you value your wife as your first priority, they have a feeling of security and love that’s nearly unshakeable. Make a point to put that relationship first, and your family will benefit.

I read a blog post from husband and wife team Danielle and Astro Teller recently that struck a chord with me. It said that, “Sometime between when we were children and when we had children of our own, parenthood became a religion in America.” They went on to point out that, like many religions, parenthood has been elevated to a place of wholehearted devotion and sacrifice that can’t be questioned. To do so is to risk being labeled a heretic. The number one casualty of our new form of worship? American marriages. If you’ve fallen victim to the parenting as a religion mind-set, it may be time to get your house in order. Hear me out on this: Parenting is a high calling. Our children are blessings, and we should give them our best. But modern American parenting often elevates caring for and providing for our children to an unhealthy level that is damaging to our marriages and (get this!) actually hurts our kids. By more or less worshiping them during the formative years, we distort our kids’ perceptions of themselves and their place in the world. And then, when our little idols up and leave, we’re left with a spouse we barely know in a home that loses all meaning without children. Ask yourself these five questions to see if you’ve turned parenting into a religion and if it’s silently damaging your marriage. © 2014 iMOM. All Rights Reserved. Classes are Filling Up!

1. Do I treat my marriage as the primary and most important relationship in my life? Aside from your relationship with God, your marriage should be number one. And, while lots of parents can agree with that idea in theory, the way they live out daily life doesn’t validate it. The needs/desires of the kids always come first — over the needs of the spouse or marriage relationship. We understand that younger children especially need you more much of the time. But be honest: Is your spouse perpetually holding the runner-up trophy?

2. Do I disapprove of couples who occasionally steal a weekend or a vacation without the kids? I was having a conversation with another mom a few years ago about a third couple when she remarked, knowingly, “They’re the kind of people who go on trips and leave their kids at home with the grandparents.”

What kind of people are those I wondered? People who still like each other? People who don’t think their kids are so fragile they will crumble in the care of loving friends and family for a few days? “We’re those kind of people, too,” I told her, with a smile. Conversation over.

3. When I do get time alone with my husband, do I struggle to find things to talk about? Having every corner of your marriage invested in parenting can leave a couple with little else to connect over. {Tweet This} If you have absolutely nothing to say to one another (besides discussing the kids) when you’re alone, you may have succumbed to “children as the center of the universe” syndrome. Try making a loose rule that date night is for talking about other things and remember that he was an interesting person before he was a daddy.

4. Do my children exhibit signs of feeling entitled to my constant attention? If your kids have a meltdown when you leave for a date night or refuse to back up and out of the room when you say you want to talk to daddy alone for a while, it’s possible that you’ve created the monster by conditioning them to think they are entitled to your total focus all the time. You can restore balance in their thinking, but it will have to be intentional on your part.

5. Do I feel like a failure if work or other responsibilities take me away from my kids’ activities? We understand that there’s a tension here. It’s entirely possible to be too devoted to your career to the detriment of your children. But on the flip side, a mom or dad who comes to most all of the games or performances your child participates in, but has to miss a few to take care of professional or volunteer commitments, is not a bad parent. Your job is what enables you to feed, clothe, and educate your children. There are other real needs in your community where your help is needed. By taking a balanced approach, you’re teaching your children that a life well lived encompasses a lot of different things.

Proposals for Settlement

When the Loser Pays for the Winner’s Attorney’s Fees

by Chris Reynolds

Retaining an attorney for a divorce, a criminal law matter, or a business contract can prove extremely expensive in terms of the amount of attorney’s fees needed. Further, in many cases, the client owes these fees regardless of whether you win or lose. However, there are some areas of the law where the expense of hiring an attorney isn’t prohibitive. For example, personal injury attorney’s often take cases on contingency, which simply means that the attorney takes a percentage of whatever is recovered, but the attorney is owed nothing if nothing is recovered. Florida has another interesting component to attorney’s fees in certain situations: the proposal for settlement. Essentially, a proposal for settlement is a way for the winner of a lawsuit to get the loser to pay for the winner’s attorney’s fees. For example, an injured party in a lawsuit can make an official offer (a proposal for settlement) and file that offer with the court. The other party (defendant) then has 30 days to accept that offer to settle. If the other party (defendant) does not accept the offer to settle, and if the case then goes to a jury trial and the jury awards the person who proposed the settlement more than 125% of the amount that the injured person was willing to settle

for, the court can then shift the attorney’s fees and make the defendant pay the attorney’s fees and costs for both parties. Of course, this also works for defendants. A defendant can propose a settlement to a plaintiff, and if the plaintiff does not accept it within 30 days and the jury awards 75% or less than the settlement amount proposed by the defendant, the plaintiff may have to pay for the attorney’s fees and costs for the defendant.

attorney could be many tens of thousands of dollars, so this proposal for settlement statute is extremely significant.

than 75% of the amount proposed by the defendant), then the plaintiff may have to pay the attorney’s fees for the defendant.

As a hypothetical example, consider a plaintiff who submits a proposal for settlement for $100,000.00, and a defendant files a proposal for settlement for $50,000.00. This usually happens months before the actual trial, and in this hypothetical, the plaintiff is willing to settle the case for $100,000 and the defendant is willing to settle for $50,000. Assume that neither party accepted the proposal for settlement and the case went to a jury trial. If the jury awards more than $125,000.00 (125% more than the $100,000 proposed by the plaintiff), then the defendant may have to pay for the plaintiff’s attorney’s fees. On the other hand, if the jury awards less than $37,500.00 (less

If a plaintiff loses, the plaintiff might end up owing money. In the above example, if the jury awarded $10,000, and the defense attorney fees and costs were $40,000, then the plaintiff would owe the defense attorney $30,000. On the other hand, if the jury awarded $160,000, and the plaintiff’s attorney’s fees and costs were $40,000, then the total verdict would increase by $40,000 to $200,000.

It is important to note that the attorney’s fees and costs for either the plaintiff or defense

As you can see, the amount to propose as a settlement can become very strategic because it creates the risk of having to pay for the other party’s attorney’s fees, which can be tens of thousands of dollars or more. If you or a loved one has been injured as a result of the negligence of another, please contact an experienced trial attorney.

Destination: Dinner with the

Hungry Family

Frida’s Cafe & Bakery Oh, sweet dessert heaven. Let’s skip lunch and go straight for the oh-sounbelievable row after row of custom, house-created pastry masterpieces in the glass display cases at Frida’s! That’s what every member of the Hungry Family was thinking as we entered the fabulous Frida’s Café and Bakery to enjoy lunch. It’s a good thing we didn’t skip it, though, because lunch at Frida’s was fabulous.

name for itself. At the lunch hour, the patrons included retired snow-birds, businesswomen on a working lunch, and moms with toddlers in tow.

Frida’s Café and Bakery is a forwardthinking restaurant on Ulmerton road in Pinellas that features breakfast and lunch sandwiches, European pastries and desserts (and oh, the custom cakes they do… brides, take notice!), and coffees, lattes, and frozen drinks. Details are not overlooked here, as is evident from the amazing pastry decorating to the elegant, almost spa-like glass dispenser of complimentary lemon water for patrons.

The Hungry kids enjoyed Cuban paninis with broccoli-cheese soup, steak and cheese Panini, and kids’ grilled cheese. And let’s chat for a minute about Frida’s new Fresh Fusion menu. Hungry Mama’s Winter Salad boasted mixed greens, dried cherries, red onion, walnuts, chevre cheese, and a helping of Frida’s lemon-herb chicken breast. Topped with a creamy raspberry dressing that somehow added both richness and brightness, it made the perfect winter lunch. (Um, this would also suit the Hungry Mama for summer, or autumn, you get the drift…) The Hungry Dad enjoyed a Fusion menu southwest breaded baked chicken with Yukon puppies (a delightful muffin of sorts made of Yukon potatoes), and a zingy mint salad with romaine, mint, tomatoes, red onions, lime, and olive oil.

For years, while running a wholesale food business, Frida and her family dreamed of opening their own storefront. In the twelve years they’ve been at their current location, Frida’s has built a

a side of Frida’s famous coconut bread, which has been on our minds often since. The entire Fresh Fusion menu focuses on fresh, hearty, whole foods ingredients that are delicious and healthconscious, and is available for take-out for a stressfree healthy meal at home. According to its smiling owner, there’s a combined several hundred years’ experience between the shop’s seven full-time bakers. They work seven days a week around the clock to create offerings like Mediterranean macaroons, eggnog cheesecake, napoleons (which Mr. Hungry described “like a golden brown toasted marshmallow”), chocolate mousse mice, and on and on. There’s even a selection of gorgeous sugar-free desserts should you decide to be virtuous! In addition, Frida also features her own line of coffee! (One can’t enjoy her desserts without splurging on a cup.) Truly running a family business, Frida tells stories of her son’s expert apple-fritter-making, and of recipes that were invented by her husband’s baking accidents. In a world where everything is going “mass,” and “fast,” Frida’s is a local treasure that offers expertise and fabulous service, and just plain wonderful food. The Hungry Family will be going again… that’s for sure!

Our kids love parties and, even if the party is for mom and dad to watch a big game, they love to feel a part of all of the excitement. Having them help with the food preparation is a great way to help them get involved. This Seven-Layer Bean Dip is a simple appetizer that your kids will have a blast helping to prepare. The Mexican dip is very easy to make, is fairly healthy, tastes great, and looks nice in a party setting! Also the individual serving cups are great at helping to stop the “double dippers.”

Individual 7-layer Bean Dip • 15-ounce can refried beans • 16-ounce container sour cream • 16-ounce container guacamole

• 8 ounces salsa • 4 ounces shredded cheddar cheese

• Shredded lettuce • Chopped tomato

1. Warm beans slightly in microwave until soft, not hot (about 30 seconds). Spread ¼ cup into the bottom of 8 clear plastic cups. 2. Spread ¼ cup each of sour cream and guacamole over beans. 3. Spoon 2 tablespoons salsa over guacamole. 4. Top with cheese, lettuce, and tomato. 5. Serve with tortilla chips.

January Family of the Month

Meet the Reynolds Family Each New Year brings desire for new goals. We aim to do better, to widen our horizons and reach greater potential. That often springs from the notion of “I’ve got a dream” and is realized by a solid belief in what we know is right and what is needed to reach those goals.

Heather attended Our Savior Lutheran School, which her grandfather (Dr. John Johnson, pastor) helped to found, and later continued at Azalea Middle and Osceola High. She earned a bachelor’s in business from SPC and continued from there to gain a real estate license.

Following his dream also allows Chris to help others more. He volunteers free legal advice at USF and participates in parent-teacher conferences and helps with homework. “Basically, he does whatever he can to help the kids succeed spiritually, educationally, and athletically.”

Enter Gulf Coast’s Family of the Month: Christopher and Heather Reynolds and their sons—Kai, Jayden, and Kaleb. They have dreams… and they move forward with a strength grounded in godly heritage of faith and love.

Chris is an attorney. “It’s something I’ve wanted to do since I was a little boy,” he shared. “I am passionate about justice and fairness and helping people.” He enjoys the entire process – from navigating the system to working directly with the people. “One of the best feelings is seeing a client heal – and getting to be a part of that healing process.”

Heather keeps busy, too. Besides working as a realtor, she is office manager for Chris. And in his own words, she is “a miraculous mother who somehow keeps everything together and makes sure all the boys get to their many activities.” Heather’s parents are a part of that loop, too. “They are such a huge help,” the couple agrees. Family support on every side!

Growing up, they attended various schools, but eventually met through common friends. Heather noticed Chris right away and asked him out—and the rest is a beautiful love story! “We have been together for over 10 years.” The couple has lived in Seminole most of their lives and love that the Tampa Bay area “brings all the benefits of a big city—with the feel of a small town.” It’s hard to beat the arts and entertainment, the beaches and the weather! Chris was educated at Keswick and Northside Christian as well as Seminole public schools. He graduated from Eckerd College (political science and philosophy) and then cum laude from Stetson University College of Law.

Christopher worked for a large law firm in Tampa for over a decade; but in January 2018, with a dream to fulfill, he ventured out to open his own personal injury law firm closer to home – where he could be more personally connected with his clients and able to serve them better.

“So, how do you guys relax!?” We wanted to know!

“What does relax mean?” they quipped! “Just kidding!” The family enjoys togetherness by playing sports as well as watching the local teams, traveling, reading, and discussing theology and philosophy. They participate together in lots of family traditions. One such tradition is that, in January, they listen to Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” and discuss the Civil Rights Movement and the impact it should have on their lives. We at GCF appreciate the example you as a family have shown our community as you strive to maintain strong foundations and reach for greater goals in love and consideration for others. Keep on dreaming!

That change benefits his family as well, since working from St. Petersuburg lends opportunity to be more involved in family life. “Chris has coached or helped with basketball and soccer teams for our kids,” Heather said. “He’s also taken them to ‘take your kids to work day,’ and taught multiple career day classes for our boys.”

If you would like to recommend a family to be featured as the family of the month, send a photo and a description of what makes your family unique to articles@gulfcoastfamily.org.

Why Your Child’s

Education

What you can do: 1. Analyze Your Resources Now

is at Risk

by Susan Merrill, iMom.com

A few months ago, I got a raise of sorts. My fourth child graduated from college and got a job. I have just one child left on my payroll! So I got a raise, and he got a gift—a college degree debt-free. There are many things that go into the training up of a child, and one of them is education. Many parents are putting that education at risk because they aren’t planning for it. When you hold a little one in your arms, college seems so distant. But it is not. And when there are 2, 3 or 4 children to educate, it is amazing how much it can cost and how quickly 18 years fly by. We were shocked at the dent it made in our budget when we ended up with three of our five kids in school at the same time.

Two things saved our family from having to borrow money for college— Florida Prepaid College Plans, and scholarships. Watching our kids graduate, get jobs, and plan their own budgets to pay for cars, apartments, clothes, and food was amusing for Mark and me (they just had no idea how much everything costs), but thankfully it was doable for them. They managed because they had the advantage of graduating without debt. Seventy-one percent of students graduated in 2016 with student loan debt of $25,000 to $30,000. The average monthly payment was $350. For graduate students, the loan debt was greater, ranging from $40,000 to $140,000. And while $350 does not sound like a lot, to a graduate trying to build a life after college (wardrobe,

Determine what you are able to do to provide education for each of your children. A great tool to help with your analysis is the college cost calculator. You can access one at www.myfloridaprepaid.com/ what-we-offer/.

2. Research Available Options

Explore plans available in your state to help you accomplish your educational goals. We took advantage of the Florida Prepaid Plan. The states that have prepaid savings plans are Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.

3. Familiarize Yourself with State Scholarships

Knowing the requirements your child will need to meet long before they enter high school will ensure that they don’t fall behind and can benefit. The state listing on this site: www.collegescholarships.org/ scholarships/states.htm will get you started.

When our oldest went to the University of Florida, we had Florida Prepaid and she qualified for Florida Bright Futures. The school would apply her Bright Futures Scholarship first, then Florida Prepaid would kick in. The net resulted in a $781 surplus. We received a check back for that amount and applied it to her housing. It was great. When our second child chose to go out of state, we still benefited from Florida Prepaid! We applied what we had saved in the Prepaid Plan to her housing and other expenses. The bottom line: don’t delay. I know that open enrollment has begun for Florida Prepaid and that monthly payments for a 4-year college degree are only about $130 a month for a newborn. Finding the RIGHT SCHOOL

Most of us want to give our children the best possible start in life, and that includes a solid education. However it has been said that the average family spends far more time evaluating appliances and automobiles then it does appraising the quality of their children’s schools. With choices ranging from traditional parochial and private schools to new pilot and charter schools, there are a multitude of choices for families to examine. So as parents we need to take the time to explore and investigate all of the options for our children. If you are among parents who are out looking at private school options, we hope that the following list of questions will be a help to you as you visit with school administrators and visit open house events. • What is the basic philosophy of this school? • What is the ratio of staff to students? • What degrees are held by the faculty? • What is the typical schedule for a school day? • What opportunities are there for parental involvement? • What specialized programs and opportunities are offered by the school? • How long has the school been in operation? • How diverse is the student body of the school? • How long do children typically stay at the school? • What is the tuition and are scholarships available? • Do you have written information that compares this school with others in the district? • Does the principal communicate regularly with the families? • What are the music and arts programs like? • What after school programs are offered?

New Era Begins for Tech High The community celebrated a new beginning at Richard O. Jacobson Technical High School at Seminole. The celebration featured the official ribbon cutting for the high school, named for late businessman and philanthropist Richard “Dick” Jacobson. His foundation’s landmark $5 million gift to the Pinellas Education Foundation, the largest in the organization’s history, will support major educational initiatives in Pinellas County Schools, including Elevating Excellence and the construction of a veterinary sciences building at the school. “It is quickly becoming the jewel of not only Seminole but our school district,” said Pinellas County Schools Superintendent Dr. Michael Grego. “It’s on target to house and educate more than 600 students in the very near future.

www.gulfcoastfamily.org

Pinellas County School Board Chairperson René Flowers expressed gratitude to the Jacobson Foundation for its support of the Jacobson Technical High School and previously the Jacobson Culinary Academy at Tarpon Springs High School. “Students at both schools are thriving,” she said. “Here at Richard O. Jacobson Technical High School, students are receiving the hands-on experience, internships and apprenticeships, and industry certifications will ultimately lead them to high-paying jobs – many right here in Pinellas County.” The story of Richard Jacobson’s generosity connected the crowd of School Board and school officials, community members, Pinellas Education Foundation members and hundreds of Tech High students. They heard the powerful tale of a man whose passion for helping educational causes and those in need motivated him over the years to make the rarest of gifts in his adopted home of Pinellas County – a combined $15 million to benefit the causes of three Tampa Bay area friends. All three were in attendance: Pinellas Education Foundation director Bob McIntyre, who directed the funds to the Foundation;

hospitality entrepreneur Ed Droste for the Moffitt Cancer Center; and restauranteur Frank Chivas for the Clearwater Marine Aquarium and a culinary arts program. “His fingerprints are all over Iowa, that’s where he was born and raised, but he loved Florida and this area, and he’s given over $24 million to various causes here,” McIntyre said. Of course, the school that would have been closest to his heart was the one in the spotlight Friday. In August, Richard O. Jacobson High School opened as the school district’s first fulltime technical high school. Students at Tech High have opportunities to pursue seven different career paths: Nursing, Veterinary Assisting, Building and Construction Design Technology, Electricity, Digital and Graphic Arts, Marine Mechanics, and Game and Simulation Programming. The school, which chiefly featured vocational programs for students, has gone by many names. In the 1960s it was known as the Ag Farm. In the 70s, it became the Seminole Vocational Education Center. And it was renamed Career Academies of Seminole in 2013. A portion of the Jacobson Foundation gift will go toward building the Veterinary Assisting and Life Sciences building on the school’s campus, in a

spot where a barn housing animals for the program had been destroyed by Hurricane Irma in 2017. “We’re the only school that has large animals to work with,” said Jacobson Tech principal Martha Giancola. “It’s training that most people don’t get to have. Some of the work the students are already starting to do is postsecondary, so they’ll be doubly ready to join the work force.” Representing the Jacobson Foundation was its President and Chief Operating Officer, Doug DenAdel, who spoke of Richard Jacobson’s love of helping others with the money he earned through his large logistics company and various businesses. “Dick was all about helping kids find their path,” he added. “Not everyone is going to get a four-year degree. Some people will work in various service industries, whatever that may be. But everyone has their place. And he was just radically impressed with the Pinellas Education Foundation and what they were doing – with leadingedge programs and supporting the kids, and finding the right ways to get them where they needed to be. We knew that this was something we wanted to continue to help grow.” DenAdel’s voice cracked with emotion in his closing words: “I know Dick would be proud of what you have done.”

Inspire Your Child to Learn with These Helpful Tips By: Judy Adorno, Sylvan Learning Center of St. Petersburg How did your child do in the first half of the school year? Were you pleased with his performance, or do you think there is room for improvement? No matter what letters appeared on your child’s report card, January is the perfect time to help him get excited about going back to school and learning. This can be accomplished by creating an atmosphere in your home that encourages learning. Here are a few tips on how you can be involved with your child’s learning process and help motivate them in the new year. Have family reading time at least once a week. One great tool that can help families develop a family reading time, is Book Adventure, a free Sylvan-created interactive, reading motivation program that can be found at www.bookadventure. com. Students choose their own books from more than 7,000 titles, take short comprehension quizzes and redeem their accumulated points for small prizes. Book Adventure also offers teacher and parent resources

and tips to help children develop a lifelong love of reading. Set aside a specific time for homework and studying. Take advantage of this quiet time to sit with your child and work on your paperwork. This visually demonstrates the importance of “work time” to your child. If homework was a struggle during the first semester, set up a reward system for this semester. For example, deposit change in a small jar when homework is complete. As soon as the jar is full, treat the whole family to something everyone will enjoy.

Judy Adorno is the owner and director at Sylvan Learning of St. Petersburg. Sylvan Learning is the leading provider of tutoring to students of all ages, grades and skill levels with more than 35 years of experience and nearly 800 centers located throughout North America. Sylvan’s trained and Sylvan-certified teachers provide personalized instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, study skills and test-prep. For more information, call 727-347-6284 or visit SylvanLearning.com/St. Petersburg.

Create study plans. Have your child do his most challenging assignment first, while he is most focused, then have him work on easier tasks. Finish each homework session with a fun activity.

Get your child organized inside and outside of school. By being organized, your child will have plenty of time to complete all assignments, and she will also learn the value of time management.

Search the Internet with your child to learn more about topics being covered in school.

Talk to your child’s teachers. The second half of the year can be more challenging than the first. Find out if your child needs extra help in a specific subject in order to keep up with the class.

Invite your child to participate in cooking or shopping to strengthen her math skills. Encourage your child to choose a classmate with whom he can study and swap reading books.

For more educational resources for children in grades pre-K through 12, please visit http://tutoring.sylvanlearning.com or call 1-800-EDUCATE.

Refresh your child’s “study space.” Make sure that all materials, such as pencil sharpeners, erasers and extra paper are easily accessible and in adequate supply.

Maybe you want more energy, or perhaps you want to lose weight and keep it off for good. Whatever your goals, a new year means a fresh start to become the best version of yourself. Here are five tips from Nutrisystem experts to get your scale moving in the right direction and support your long-term health.

1

Skip “diet” drinks: Of course, you know not to order the regular cola with your meal, but you figure the lowercalorie diet version is an okay choice. Not necessarily. One recent review of research found that artificial sweeteners often used in diet drinks may not be as beneficial for weight management as intended, and that drinking them regularly may be linked to an increased body mass index. If you want something fizzy, opt for seltzer with lemon or lime. But if you can’t stop

dreaming of that diet soda, it doesn’t have to be completely off-limits. Just try to cut back. Moderation is key!

2

Drink more water: Every part of your body needs water to work properly. When you don’t get enough, your body can’t perform normal functions, which can drain your energy. More fatigue means less physical activity. Plus, mild dehydration is often masked as hunger — prompting you to grab a snack when all you really need is water. Nutrisystem experts recommend drinking at least eight, 8-ounce glasses daily.

3

Slow down: It takes 20 minutes for the “I’m full” signals from your stomach to reach your brain. When you inhale your food, it’s much easier to eat more than your body really needs. One review of 23 studies found that fast eaters were about twice as likely to be obese,

Courtesy of StatePoint Media

compared to slow eaters. To help slow down, take smaller bites, chew 10 to 15 times and put your fork down between each bite.

4

Don’t eyeball portions: “The supersized meals at restaurants have given us a skewed view of proper portion size,” says registered dietitian for Nutrisystem, Courtney McCormick. Even if you’re tracking your food intake with an app or food journal, overestimating portions can sabotage progress. McCormick’s solution: Measure portions — not forever, but for a while at the start. Doing so will help you get a visual of what portions should actually look like. You may also consider eliminating some of the guesswork with a program, such as Nutrisystem, that offers pre-portioned, nutritionally-balanced meals.

5

Reduce stress: Stress can cause your body to burn calories more slowly, which could lead to weight gain, according to a study. Plus, stress increases hormones that stimulate appetite, and the foods you’ll crave for comfort tend to be high in fat and sugar. Help manage stress with deep breathing, meditation, exercise, hanging out with friends or listening to music. More tips on jump-starting your weight loss goals can be found at nutrisystem.com. With these tips for the new year, you’ll be on the road to realistic weight loss achievement and have more energy for your day-to-day life.

Young Health Talk: Research Shows Positive Effects ofbyTumeric John D. Young, MD I find the history of medicine both fascinating and instructive. I thoroughly enjoy reading stories of doctors in history and how they came about their knowledge and went about overcoming their medical challenges. One such doctor, was Dr. Frederick Klenner, a pediatrician from Duke University who practiced in a small town in North Carolina in the 1940’s and 50’s. When the polio epidemic broke out in a neighboring town, he and another doctor took care of the polio patients. The other doctor applied the standard protocol in treating his patients. Some of these patients either died or were crippled; few recovered. Dr. Klenner decided to take a different approach. In his research of Vitamin C, he had found that in high doses, it was anti-viral. Polio is a viral illness that affects the muscles. He gave Vitamin C intravenously in large amounts (i.e. 50,000mg). None of his polio patients died or became crippled. All recovered. Here was a doctor who was not satisfied with the results and dared to search for answers outside the confines of the standard protocol. In the 1950’s, Dr. John Meyers, former Chief of Medicine at John Hopkins University, was challenged by a group

of patients presenting with the following symptoms: depression, fatigue, body aches, stomach complaints, and general malaise. No one could pin down a medical diagnosis or treatment based on these vague complaints. After seeing all the specialists and finding no answers, these patients had to concede that there was nothing to be done for them and that they would have to live with their condition (whatever that was). Dr. Meyers knew of a South African biologist who had described extreme fatigue in animals and had discovered that these animals were missing an essential trace element: iodine. Dr. Meyers was

also familiar with Dr. Klenner’s work with Vitamin C. Upon further assessment, Dr. Meyers found that the patients in this group were indeed low on iodine. Besides supplementing them with iodine, he also gave them large intravenous doses of Vitamin C. The results were astounding. Patients who had been suffering for years, showed improvement within hours and days of treatment. A more recent example comes from California. Researches at UCLA have been studying the effects of tumeric (or curry powder) on the brain. They were testing the hypothesis that the low incidences of dementia/Alzheimer’s in the people of India is because of their consumption of large amounts of tumeric. Over a lifetime of eating curried food, tumeric is incrementally absorbed by the brain. The researchers needed to speed up this process. By nature, tumeric does not cross the bloodbrain barrier easily, so to overcome this, the UCLA researchers added a fat molecule

to the tumeric. They gave this special tumeric to 80 institutionalized dementia patients for 16 weeks. At the conclusion of the study, 60 of the patients showed so much improvement that they were discharged! Their research has shown that tumeric works in the brain by decreasing inflammation, dissolving amyloid deposits (which short circuits the brain), and keeps certain parts of the brain from “folding” on itself which stops the flow of information within the brain. Finally! A modern, scientific explanation for an ancient phenomenon. This is why I love medicine. It’s constantly changing as we learn more, as we are challenged, and as we are bold enough to ask the questions and pursue the answers. Happy New Year and a healthy 2015 to all! To Your Health, John Young, MD

Tips to Keep Pets Happy and Healthy Just as you can become tense and stressed out by your daily life, so too can your dog or cat. And pet anxiety is not only unpleasant for your pet and potentially damaging to your home and belongings; it can also lead to a host of other health and wellness problems. With some simple lifestyle tweaks however, you can make scratching, digging, clawing, whining and crying a thing of the past. Here are some tips to reduce your dog or cat’s anxiety and make their life, and yours, a bit more comfortable:

KEEP PETS ACTIVE

“Often, the source of a pet’s anxiety is lack of activity,” says Brian Atkinson, Director of Pet Training at Invisible Fence Brand. “Whether you have a dog or cat, regular exercise is crucial for a happy, anxiety-free pet.” Be sure to give pets plenty of opportunities for outdoor exercise. Play games with your cat or dog that are both mentally and physically stimulating.

cise, stimulate a pet’s senses and provide a change of scenery.

GRANT MORE FREEDOM

If you’re like many pet owners, your schedule means leaving your dog or cat alone for long stretches of time. Granting safe access to your yard while you’re busy can alleviate this burden. Consider installing a pet door combined with a pet containment system. “With proper training, dogs and cats can safely learn to understand and respect the boundaries of the yard,” says Atkinson. Highly recommended by veterinarians, professional dog trainers, behaviorists and other pet experts, a pet door can reduce accidents inside the home, increase exer-

Opt for a programmable electronic pet door that’s customizable. For instance, the Invisible Fence Brand Doorman, which is completely secure against unwanted visitors with an automatic locking device, allows you to set different schedules, boundaries and rules for each pet. More information about such devices is available at www.invisiblefence.com.

MAKE SEPARATION EASIER

If your pet cries or misbehaves when you leave the house, you may need to take steps to reduce his or her separation anxiety. Desensitize your pet to anxiety-inducing predeparture cues like putting your shoes on or packing your bag, by regularly doing these actions and staying put. When you do leave, keep the radio on to keep your pet company throughout the day. Keep your absences short initially, gradually building up the length of time you’re away. And try to avoid making grand entrances and exits. The act of leaving and

returning home should be as much of a non-event as possible.

MAINTAIN THEIR SPACE

Be sure to regularly clean litter boxes and keep your pet well-hydrated. Automatic litter systems, pet feeders and drinking fountains can help you maintain your pet’s living conditions, even when you aren’t there to do it yourself. Don’t ignore your pet’s anxiety. A few household changes can take the stress out of being a pet, giving you peace of mind that your furry friend is happy and healthy.

A New Year’s Resolution Worth Keeping by Kenny McNatt It’s hard to believe that Christmas, with all of it’s excitement has come and gone. The lights, decorations and Christmas DVDs are “neatly” stored away. Now we look forward to a new year. The dawning of a new year brings with it a hope for change. This hope for change provides the perfect platform for setting new goals. Most resolutions center around our physical health, our financial well-being or our educational goals. While these are all important areas to improve, we must not loose sight of how important it is to have great relationships. It is not that we view relationships as Kenny is a husband, a father, and a follower of Christ. He is a graduate of Southeastern University, Lakeland, Florid. He curently serves as the Lead Pastor at Seminole Assembly of God.

unimportant. It is simply that we often take relational health for granted. Building healthy relationships requires a proactive mindset and a willingness to make necessary changes. In reflecting back over the years that I have spent helping individuals and families, I have arrived at the following conclusion. One of the greatest determiners of healthy relationships is an individuals ability to forgive. Forgiveness is crucial relationship we have.

is because our vision is blurred from efforts to prove we are right. Other times it is because we want to hold someone accountable for the wrong they have done us. Most often we do not forgive because we misunderstand what it means to forgive. With that in mind, I would like to share the three stages of forgiveness from a book titled, The Art of Forgiveness by Lewis B. Smedes. I have found that understanding these stages will help to bring clarity when it comes to forgiving those who have hurt you. • Stage One: Rediscover the Humanity of the Person Who Hurt You In rediscovering the humanity of the individual, we no longer look at the person as the wrong they have done to us. Living life fueled by vengeance will only lead you to deeper depths of anger and bitterness. • Stage Three: Revise Your Feelings Toward the Person You Forgive Once you have rediscovered their humanity (the fact that they are not the wrong they have done) and given up your right to get even, you will find that your feelings toward them will begin to change. As you set your goals for this year, make your relationships a priority by living a life of forgiveness.

with Jim Daly Q: The past three years I’ve made a New Year’s resolution to work out and lose weight. And every year I lost momentum within a few weeks. I feel guilty about breaking my promise to my family—and myself. What can I do differently this year? Jim: Many of us make some sort of resolution this time of year, and a lot of those involve healthier living. According to psychologists, guilt might get you to start exercising, but it’s unlikely to keep you going. It’s a good idea to take a proactive approach to eating right and getting healthy exercise. But you need to be strategic. Michelle Segar, a psychologist at the University of Michigan, suggests the problem is that most of us start an exercise program out of guilt. We feel it’s something we have to do. But we’ll only continue exercising if we’re able to realize that not only does exercise help us feel better, it also improves the quality of our life.

Dr. Segar says society has made the mistake of making exercise feel like a “chore” instead of the gift it really is. Studies have shown that people who run, walk or go to the gym together tend to exercise much more consistently than those who don’t. Some think it’s a matter of accountability, but it’s more likely due to the fact that most of us thrive in the company of like-minded friends. Among

HOW TO HANDLE ENTERTAINMENT IN THE COMING YEAR Q: My husband and I have decided that this coming year, we want to take a strategic approach to how we handle entertainment in our household. Bob, if you could offer every parent just five tips of media advice, what would they be?

Bob Waliszewski, Director, Plugged In: That’s a great question. Here are my topfive suggestions: 1) Choose your family entertainment choices based on bettering yourselves. People give all sorts of reasons for their selections. Take movies, for instance. Many will watch a film simply because of the buzz, an ad they saw on TV, who’s in it, how it did financially opening weekend and/or the special effects budget. I’m not saying those things are unimportant. But first and foremost, we should be asking: “Will this film make me (and my kids) a better person? Will it inspire, encourage and uplift?” If it doesn’t, why bother? 2) Get into your kids’ entertainment world. Do you know your children’s favorite musicians? Video games? TV shows? Ask today. Then ask at least every six months. Research their choices at PluggedIn.com. 3) Know what your children are doing for entertainment when they’re at someone

else’s home. If the form of entertainment doesn’t meet your household’s standards, be quick to supply a great alternative. 4) Model it. If you as parents privately consume media that you’d be embarrassed about if your kids found out, know this: Someday they will. I don’t know why exactly, but it just works that way in life!

Pinellas Academy is a SACS Accredited Charter School offering:

5) Put things in writing. When our children were growing up, I wrote out a “family media constitution” that gave us some written guidelines to fall back on. We all signed and dated it. And it helped tremendously. I recommend you post it in a public place in your home.

CREATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR DEALING WITH A PICKY EATER Q: We have a 4-year-old daughter who is a very picky eater. Every meal seems to turn into a fight. Can you offer some practical ideas for easing this conflict? Danny Huerta, Vice President, Parenting and Youth: The first thing I’d suggest is this: Don’t panic over a finicky child who wants the same food for every meal. I know one family whose two young boys asked for corn dogs and pizza, no matter what was served. The parents didn’t give in to those requests, but also didn’t leave their sons at the table for hours until they finished their spinach. When kids are hungry, they eat. As a parent, you get to make the initial choice of what foods are going to be available in

A rigorous and challenging curriculum. Character-based education program. A safe, secure campus. Tuition-free, private school environment. High quality teachers that provide individualized student attention.

the home and shop accordingly. But in that context, try involving your daughter in choosing and making the meals. When children participate in this way, in many cases they inevitably taste a variety of foods and get accustomed to a range of options. They also feel some ownership of the food. You can be creative and play “gas station” with your 4-year-old at meal times. Explain that filling up our bodies is a lot like driving and riding in cars. You can’t skip the gas station; and if you put the wrong fuel in, or none at all, the car/body won’t work right. The ideas are endless. As your child gets older, help her identify and distinguish “fuel” foods from “pleasure” foods. Of course, through the years I have also worked with several children who had sensory issues. This presents a different challenge. If you try various creative ideas to get your child to eat and nothing seems to work, she may need to be evaluated by an occupational therapist. An assessment can help determine if there are any sensory processing issues that create a reaction to certain textures or tastes when it comes to food.

HUSBAND ISN’T PULLING HIS WEIGHT WITH CHILDCARE DUTIES Q: My husband is more than willing to play with the kids. But when it comes to the practical side of parenting— dinner, diapers, bath times—I don’t think he pulls his weight. What’s a woman to do? www.gulfcoastfamily.org

Jim: I’ve heard this complaint from many wives. Men and women often have different understandings about parenting. You may feel it’s natural that tasks be shared equally. But for your husband… well, it might not be so obvious.

with Jim Daly cleaning the house and grocery shopping. The idea isn’t to punish your husband, but to help him understand the realities of the workload around the house. If he’s into sports, you might try using team-based descriptions to illustrate how different players may change assignments based on the game situation and play design. It could be he wasn’t expected to help around the house when he was younger. Or maybe his parents had clearly defined roles that now guide his thinking. Whatever the reason, communication between a husband and wife in these situations is key. So start by sharing your concerns and see if, together, you can agree on ways to split household duties to your mutual satisfaction. If dialogue doesn’t do the trick, counselors often suggest you set appropriate boundaries to motivate his involvement. For example, let him know he’ll likely have to fix his own dinner since you’ll be busy with other things, like feeding and bathing the kids or

WHAT’S THE HARM IN LIVING TOGETHER BEFORE MARRIAGE Q: My boyfriend and I want to get married eventually, but we’ve been told that living together for a few years will help us prepare before making things “official.” What do you think?

Greg Smalley, Vice President, Family Ministries: Living together almost seems to have become the new engagement. The problem is that research shows the divorce rates for those who live together before marriage are significantly higher than for those who don’t. Cohabitation is a risky venture because there’s no commitment holding the relationship together. It’s essentially two people saying to one another, “I’ll hang out with you as long as you make me happy.” That’s a shaky foundation to build a life on. It infuses doubt and mistrust into the very DNA of your relationship from the get-go. In other words, you’re sabotaging your marriage before you even walk down the aisle. I think a lot of young adults are choosing to live together because they’re afraid to commit. Maybe their parents divorced, or they’ve been swayed by negative messages about marriage in the culture. Whatever the reason, I believe these couples want to get married and stay married.

The biggest problem is most don’t know how to prepare for marriage properly. They don’t realize they can learn how to build a successful relationship. And that’s too bad because premarital counseling can make a lifetime of difference. If you doubt that, consider this: Eighty percent of couples who get quality premarital training stay married. That percentage of success shows that there is a way for couples to make a lasting commitment to one another. We have loads of resources and information available to help your relationship thrive at FocusOnTheFamily.com/marriage. Jim Daly is president of Focus on the Family, host of the Focus on the Family radio program, and a husband and father of two.

Facebook may have had its share of troubles recently, as PluggedIn has reported regularly in Culture Clips. But the social media giant continues to refine its strategy for delivering content and engaging the billions of users it still has. This past December, Facebook rolled out its new local news feature, called “Today In,” a service that will be available some 400 cities. NBC reports, “The dedicated section collects and aggregates relevant stories for local communities in a packaged form in the user’s News Feed. Facebook said the goal is to allow users to ‘catch up on news, events, and discussions happening in your community.’” Ironically, though, people don’t really want to read about news. They want to watch it, according to a new study from the Pew Research Center. Nearly half of Americans (47%) prefer watching news telecasts than listening to (19%) or reading about (34%) what’s going on in the world. The study’s co-authors, Amy Mitchell and Hannah Klein, noted that “viewing loyalties have yet to migrate fully to the web.” Web content providers of varying stripes are also imposing more stringent limits on what users can post and see. And in closing, Apple’s Tim Cook recently said that tech companies have a moral obligation to take a stand against hate speech online. As the winner of the AntiDefamation League’s inaugural “Courage Against Hate” award, Cook said, “We only have one message for those who seek to push hate, division, and violence: You have no place on our platforms. You have no home here.” Cook also added, “I believe the most sacred thing each of us is given is our judgment, our morality, our own innate desire to separate right from wrong. Choosing to set that responsibility aside at a moment of trial is a sin.”

Captain Wilson Hubbard arrived in Pass-a-Grille in 1929 and began catching and selling fish from the Merry Pier. His purchase of five rowboats and 40 cane poles when he was 17 was the beginning of what became the famed Hubbard’s marina operation. Hubbard bought his first charter boat after World War II, and the Eighth Avenue Pier became known as Hubbard’s Pier.

He wrote it in just three weeks, it made him a star at age 25, and it brought jazz stylings to a “serious” classical piece. Gershwin was at the piano for its premier in 1924, and the work has been a staple of American music ever since. At the piano this time will be Cuban jazz pianist Aldo López-Gavilán, who gave a dazzling performance of Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini with TFO last season. www.floridaorchestra.org
