Parent to Parent As obscure holidays go, none is so important in our house as “National Winnie-the-Pooh Day,” celebrated on A.A. Milne’s birthday each year. No one knows the origin of the holiday, and we’re not even sure if “national” refers to the United States, Great Britain, or somewhere else entirely. But my daughter Haylee, who would be a serious contender for the title of “Winnie-the-Pooh’s biggest fan”, has very big plans for the day every year. This is not the sort of holiday where you just watch one little movie. She needs to be surrounded by her stuffed animals, watch a marathon of Pooh movies, and have appropriate snacks – honey obviously, but also something to honor the other characters (carrot cake
Haylee had two disappointments as National Winniethe-Pooh day approached a few weeks ago. The first was that she learned that her uncle, who was of course to be invited to her party, was going to be in England on the big day and wouldn’t be able to attend. That disappointment was at least mitigated by the realization that he would actually be in the place where it all happened. Then, due to lots of company and some other scheduling conflicts, that weekend turned out to be the only time when we could take my son Daniel to Disney to use up the last two days on a four-day pass before it expired. Now, Disney wouldn’t generally be a problem, except Daniel wanted to go to Epcot and Hollywood Studios, neither of which has a significant Winniethe-Pooh presence. Sometimes you can see Pooh and Tigger in Epcot, but not always. So we arrived at a compromise. Dad would take Daniel and Hanna to Epcot, and I would
take Haylee to Magic Kingdom, where one can always count on finding Pooh characters and taking a ride through the Hundred Acre Wood. I even managed to get a reservation for a late lunch at Haylee’s favorite restaurant, Crystal Palace, so we could meet multiple characters without waiting in any lines. Even though it wasn’t quite like she had pictured it, it turned out to be a great National Winnie-thePooh day for Haylee. She packed up one each of all of her Pooh friends in a giant bag and brought them along. And as a result, the characters at the restaurant definitely recognized her as a top fan – we were there for two parades, and each time, one of the characters came and got Haylee to lead it. And the icing on the cake was when her uncle returned the next week with a new Pooh stuffed animal from Harrod’s, the same store where the original Winnie-the-Pooh was purchased. Until next time,

It was always fun finding ways to awaken a feeling of patriotism in their young minds. We learned about George Washington and made a paper plate face with a cotton ball wig. The face of Abraham Lincoln was graced with a black beard made by tracing their hands onto black paper. It is never too early to begin teaching our little ones to have a love and pride for our great country. Maybe your grandkids have watched animated films about the people who stand behind the founding of our country. Check with your local library for more of these DVDs and also for the beautiful picture books that are available. Let’s be sure our grandchildren experience all that makes our community unique among so many other great places to live here in the USA. Since we are blessed with beautiful weather most of the year, why not take advantage of the many outdoor activities along the Gulf Coast? For starters, we have a movie star right here in Clearwater—Winter the dolphin! The Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary is another great place for little ones to see our community at work. The Looper Trolley in downtown St Petersburg is fun just for the ride, but also a great way to get a new view of our beautiful waterfront. Florida Minor Settlements: Allen v. Montalyan by Chris Reynolds
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motor vehicle accidents are the number one cause of death in the United States for minors. Each year, approximately 167,000 children are injured and 1,100 are killed in motor vehicle crashes.
Unsurprisingly, there are many automobile accident settlements involving minors. Florida has multiple laws to protect minors in these situations. One of the stated policy reasons for this is to prevent the parents or legal guardians from spending the settlement money before the child becomes an adult at age 18. There are two important things that may or may not be required for settlements for minors: (1) approval by a court of
the settlement; and (2) appointment of a guardian ad litem for the minor who will represent the interests of the minor.
Guardian Ad Litem Florida Statute 744.3025 requires that anytime there is a settlement where the gross amount is $50,000 or greater, the court must appoint a guardian ad litem to represent the minor’s interests. Further, in any case with a gross settlement that exceeds $15,000, the court may, at its discretion, appoint a guardian ad litem for the minor. Under Florida Statute 744.387, if the net settlement amount (after reduction of medical bills, attorney’s fees and costs, etc.) that will go to the minor exceeds $15,000, the court must appoint a guardian ad litem as well.
Court Approval Some cases are settled before any lawsuit is filed, of course. However, these rules still apply to pre-suit settlements. For those cases where a lawsuit has been filed, every settlement must be approved by the court.

If the injury claim for the minor is settled before the filing of any lawsuit and the gross settlement amount is less than $15,000, there is no general requirement to get court approval. If the gross settlement is greater than $15,000 and the net amount to the minor is less than $15,000, but no lawsuit is filed, court approval of the settlement is required, though there is no obligation to appoint a guardian ad litem. Some courts in Florida (but not all) require that even if the gross settlement amount is less than $50,000 and the net amount to the minor is less than $15,000, the money must be put in a depository account and that money can only be removed from the account with Court approval.
Allen v. Montalvan In this case, multiple minor children were injured in a motor vehicle collision. Specifically, there was one adult who died, one adult who was injured, and three children who were injured. The at-fault party had only $50,000 total in insurance to cover all of these people.
The $50,000 was given to the attorneys for the adults and children, but the insurance company did not specify how much was for each person. The attorneys ended up giving $25,000 to each adult, and gave none for the children. No court approval for this settlement was obtained. A couple of years later, the mother of the children filed a claim for injuries on behalf of the children. The insurance company asked the court to dismiss the claim, stating that the claim was already settled. Though the trial court initially agreed with the insurance company and dismissed the claim, the mother appealed on behalf of the children, and the appellate court disagreed. The appellate court reasoned that the gross settlement amount was $50,000, and since it involved children, a guardian ad litem was required. Accordingly, the initial settlement was not proper and the claim was still open for the children. As you can see, minor settlements can become very complex depending on many factors. Social and Physical Maturity
The ability to focus on instruction or a task is important for successful learning in the classroom. Readiness for kindergarten means the child can follow instruction and stick with a task for five to ten minutes. Read aloud activities or project learning are good ways to increase attentiveness.
Social and physical maturity is seen in the child’s ability to take turns, share with others, listen, communicate, have command of their body, hold a pencil, write their name, and use scissors. Kindergarten is a place for learning social skills and further developing physical maturity.
Curiosity and Desire to Learn
This is not an exhaustive list of skills for kindergarten, but it will help you assess and prepare for this important step in your child’s life. It is not expected that these skills be mastered. Some children will know all their letters and sounds — maybe even be reading when they enter kindergarten,

How would you describe planning a family vacation? Exciting? Promising? Overwhelming? Stressful? The answer to this can be any and all of these at the same time! Family vacations are so exciting to look forward to and experience together, but they can also be stressful to plan and with so many options available can also be overwhelming! Let’s start with the assumptions that a family vacation is a huge benefit to your family, and is something you definitely want to do! Now, where do you start?
Choose your adventure!
Where do you want to go? What do you want to experience? Living in Florida gives us so many options as we look to plan a family vacation. Do we make a short drive to Orlando for a visit to the

theme parks? Do we book a cruise and visit the Bahamas or Caribbean? Do we hop on a flight and visit one of many tropical destinations that are within a half-day trip? I’d suggest deciding on what destination you want first.
Plan ahead!
While it’s true that on occasion you can score a last-minute deal on a cruise or hotel, in general the best rates are going to be available months or even years in advance. You’ll get the best selection and choice of accommodations. It also forces you to put it on your calendar and plan the rest of “life” around those dates. If you know what you’d like to do, consider putting a deposit down a year or so ahead of time. This gives you the time to make payments on your upcoming trip, and secure the best prices for your dream vacation! I always suggest figuring out the cost of your vacation up front, what you want to spend,
and then breaking it down into payments you can afford each month. Also, going on vacation and not having the cost follow you home is a wonderful way to add to the enjoyment of your trip!
Know your options!
When you get there, what are you going to do? Where are you going to eat? Do you want accommodations with a kitchen where you can prepare meals in your room? Would you prefer a dining package that covers the cost of your meals in advance? If you booked an all-inclusive, what exactly does that mean? What is included and what isn’t? (hint: they’re all a little bit different!) What are the must-do’s wherever it is that you’re going? These are my top three suggestions for planning your next family vacation.

In the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, Derek Redmond believed he could win a silver medal for Great Britain. After five years of daily training and eight operations on his Achilles tendons, Derek had won the first two heats and was running in the semifinals of the 400 meters. Things were going as planned until, coming out of the first turn, he heard a snap and felt a sharp pain in his left leg. Derek went down in a heap on the track as he realized that his left hamstring had exploded, and with it, his dreams of an Olympic medal. He got to his feet and began to run—hop, really—to finish the race. He later said that he was determined to finish and therefore waved off the race officials, who were running toward him with a stretcher. And then he felt a hand on his shoulder.

Take Me Out to the Spring training gets into full swing in February here in Florida, and for families who have a passion for our national pastime, spring training is the ideal time to see your favorite players at their pre-season best – having fun, willing to sign autographs and open to mingling with the fans. in the kitchen This year before you freeze your strawberry bounty from the Florida Strawberry Festival, why not try this delightful dessert. This delicious and easy treat did not take long at all for the kids to make and it took even less time for the family to devour it.
Strawberry Cupcakes • 1 package white cake mix • 1 small package strawberry gelatin • 4 egg whites
• ⅓ cup vegetable or canola oil • 1 cup fresh or frozen strawberries • ½ cup water
• ⅓ cup butter • 2 ½ cups powdered sugar • Additional fresh strawberries for garnish
1. Combine cake mix, gelatin, egg whites, and oil in a large mixing bowl. Beat until well blended. 2. Mash strawberries in their juice. Set aside ¼ cup for icing, and add remaining berries and water to cake batter. Mix well. 3. Pour batter into 24 lined or greased cupcake pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 to 18 minutes. Cool completely. 4. Combine butter and reserved strawberries in a small mixing bowl. Gradually beat in powdered sugar until spreading consistency. 5. Frost cupcakes and garnish with fresh strawberry halves, if desired.

Here is a super easy stromboli recipe that you can prepare in no time for the big game day or any time you’ve got a hungry crowd. This hearty appetizer is a real crowdpleaser in our home and the beautiful thing about stromboli, is you can layer in whatever ingredients you like.
Pepperoni Stromboli • 1 loaf frozen bread dough, thawed • 2 eggs, separated • 2 tbsp. oil • 1 tsp. dried oregano • 1 tsp. dried parsley flakes
• ½ tsp. garlic powder • ¼ tsp. pepper • 4 oz. sliced pepperoni • 8 oz. shredded mozzarella cheese • 1 tbsp. Parmesan cheese
1. On a lightly floured surface, roll bread dough into a 15-inch by 12-inch rectangle. 2. Combine egg yolks, oil, oregano, parsley, garlic powder and pepper. Spread over dough. 3. Arrange pepperoni slices over egg mixture and sprinkle with mozzarella and Parmesan. 4. Roll up dough starting with a long side. Pinch ends to seal. 5. Place seam side down on a lightly greased baking sheet. Lightly beat egg whites and brush over top. 6. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 40 minutes.

And They Lived Happily Ever After DEARLY BELOVED, we are gathered here today, at the neighborhood Cineplex, to witness the union of two people in holy matrimony. Though big-budget Disney remakes, superhero films and sci-fi sagas from a galaxy far, far away often get the most attention at the box office, movies about marriage remain a cinematic staple. That’s because good movies depend on interesting conflicts, and marriage offers no shortage of storytelling fodder in that department, whether we’re talking about Hallmark romances, silly romcoms or serious dramas. We may snicker at the contrived situations and the stilted dialogue that Hollywood often delivers, but the fact is that we do indeed have high expectations of marriage. And movies tap into those “happily ever after”
longings, sometimes in ways that are constructive, other times in ways that quietly reinforce unhealthy expectations of what love and marriage are all about. So let’s take a look at the potential perils and promises of onscreen relationships, especially when it comes to how they influence our perceptions of marriage.

But I sometimes face the temptation to compare my marriage of 15 years (with three kids) to a nice, neat, feel-good story that’s completely wrapped up in the two hours. And if I’ve had a recent conflict with my wife, or we’re dealing with some unresolved issue in our marriage or family, these films can make me feel like there’s something wrong with my own relationship - that it’s not as good as what I’ve just seen on the big screen. The Most Romantic Gift — Keep a lifelong fascination with your spouse by Dr. Greg Smalley American couples spend billions each Valentine’s Day. Romantic cards, candy, flowers, candlelit dinners and even expensive jewelry — are these what true romance is all about? I’m not knocking such gestures, and this year I’ll likely buy some items on that list. But these things are mere romantic tokens. Gifts and dinner dates can enhance romance, but they do not define romance. Some couples fail to understand its essence and have instead replaced the heart of romance with symbolic tokens and obligatory outings. Proverbs 5:18-19 aptly describes the heart of romance: “Rejoice in the wife of your youth….May you always be captivated by her love”. True romance is more about being captivated by your spouse than buying flowers or chocolate.
Captivation is all about curiosity and interest – being allured by your spouse.
Intentional Connection When I was first dating Erin, getting to know her was fascinating. We spent hours talking about her feelings, thoughts, beliefs, opinions, fears, desires, needs, hopes and dreams. LEARNING TO BE CIVIL IN A DISAGREEABLE SOCIETY
with Jim Daly Q: Every time I turn around, there’s another example in the news or on social media about people fighting over issues of race, politics, religion, moral beliefs, etc. I’m beginning to lose hope that there can ever be peace in our land. What are your thoughts? Jim: It’s clear that America is deeply divided, on many fronts. But a lot of that conflict is driven by an idea that’s fundamentally untrue: the perception that disagreeing with someone means you disrespect them as a person—or even hate them. It doesn’t have to be that way. Beliefs can be polarizing. But differing perspectives don’t have to cause us to lose our sense of dignity for one another. That means we can vigorously defend what we believe, but we can do it with civility and respect. The key is grasping and applying a core value that’s guided our nation for over two centuries: a person’s value is the result of qualities beyond what we see at first glance. This is why my Christian faith emphasizes the profound worth of every human being. People don’t deserve dignity because they’re the right height, shape, color, political
persuasion or any other label. All human beings have immeasurable worth simply because it’s endowed them by their Creator. Our conversations about societal issues have to start— and continue—in that context. And it works. Some of the people I consider to be my friends are activists who fight for ideas that directly oppose my deeply held beliefs. We disagree over almost every political and social issue. But we’ve still been able to build genuine friendships, because we show one another respect even though we hold radically differing opinions. None of us believes our opposing views have to turn into animosity or hatred toward one another. That civility allows us to find common ground.
WHAT CONSTITUES ACCEPTABLE AND UNACCEPTABLE FILMS

Q: Our 14-year-old daughter was invited to an overnight video marathon at a friend’s house. The plan was to binge-watch a series of horror films that we wouldn’t ordinarily view in our household. We chose to not let our daughter attend. But when I spoke with the friend’s mom, her reply was “Whatever—it’s only a movie.” Do you think we were too restrictive? Bob Waliszewski, Director, Plugged In: I’ll admit I’m not a fan of the horror film genre or its recent spin-off commonly called torture porn. Because of that, it would be easy for me to quickly answer your question with a “you did the right thing—case closed.” But the question is best answered in a bigger context of what constitutes acceptable and unacceptable films. I like to boil down the “in-bounds vs. out-of-bounds” dilemma to a few
The first is this: Will watching this film (or watching this TV show, listening to this song, playing this video game) make me a better person? Will it encourage me to be more honest, compassionate, generous and noble? Will it challenge me to care about others more, make a greater difference in this world, and better respond to life’s trials? If the answer to the above questions is yes, there’s still another factor to consider. Even if the film is inspiring, encouraging and uplifting overall, does it contain some content that would be counterproductive to my overall mental/ spiritual health? I say all this because it’s arguable that a few “horror” movies might fit the bill. But again, the place to start is not just films of this type, but to put all movies—no matter the genre—to the tests above. I think part of the answer lies in what we expect from relationships. The primary reason we’re attracted to people is because of the way they make us feel. Now, I want as much as anyone to experience good feelings in my marriage. But superficial emotions like that aren’t enough of a foundation to sustain a relationship or to create deep, fulfilling intimacy. That’s because as soon as the good feelings disappear, so does the person’s commitment to the relationship. It’s why people abandon friendships. And it’s why people give up on marriages. DON’T FORGET TO HAVE FUN WITH YOUR KIDS Q: Our family schedule is pretty crazy, and it seems like we’re all just getting busier. We’re trying to make changes, but meanwhile I’m concerned about staying connected with our children in what little “free time” we have. What do you suggest? Jim: Parenting can certainly be challenging, and it’s easy to let the serious business fill every hollow. But sometimes you just have to know when to be playful. I’ll share a personal example. I came home from work one day just as my boys came dragging into the house from the backyard. Troy was limping and Trent had a black and blue mark emerging on his chin. “What happened?” I asked. Troy said, “Don’t jump on the trampoline with Mom. She landed on my ankle.” Then Trent said, “Her knee cracked me right in the jaw.”
Obviously, that playtime didn’t go so well, but believe it or not, it did have a positive outcome. First, it was a moment we all still laugh about. But more importantly, Jean’s playfulness drew the boys closer to her. The bum ankle and sore jaw are long forgotten, but my boys will always remember their mom taking time out of her busy schedule to play with them. That’s a great reminder for every parent. The pressures of adult life can make us a little too serious sometimes. Be playful. Play board games, wrestle on the floor, throw the ball around. Find something your children like to do and join them. It’ll deepen your relationship with them, and they’ll see you as more than a disciplinarian or someone who cooks dinner and does the laundry. They’ll see you as someone who really enjoys spending time with them whenever you can. And to a child, that equals feeling loved.
HOW TO HANDLE A TODLER TANTRUM Q: I’m a first-time parent, and my son is just getting to the “toddler tantrum” stage. I’m a bit overwhelmed— how do I handle these episodes? Danny Huerta, Vice President, Parenting and Youth: That may depend on the reason for the tantrum. Is your child hungry or tired? If so, offering a snack or a nap may be all it takes to nip a tantrum in the bud. However, if your child is frustrated over not getting his way, the best thing to do is ignore the outburst. The last thing you want to do is give in or drop everything in an effort to appease your little one. This will teach him that negative behavior pays off.
Once your child does calm down, explain that screaming won’t work and that you need him to use words. If the tantrum continues, however, you may need to use a time-out. Place your toddler somewhere without toys or entertainment, and wait for him to quiet down before allowing him to rejoin the family. It can also be helpful to identify those triggers that set your child off. If, for instance, your toddler tends to throw a fit when it’s time to leave a fun setting, prepare him in advance. A five-minute warning can go a long way toward heading off a tantrum. Finally, remember that toddler temper tantrums are perfectly normal. Math Success Begins With Algebra Judy Adorno, Director, Sylvan of St. Petersburg In today’s society, everyone, not just those who are mathematically inclined, must understand algebraic concepts and be able to work with technology. Changes in society and new expectations of colleges and employers have revolutionized math curriculums. Success in algebra often correlates to success in college, so it is very important for today’s students to do their best with this critical subject. Parents can sometimes feel intimidated because they lack experience with updated math teaching and technology. What practical steps can be taken to ease parental concerns and help families build confidence in this new approach to middle and high school mathematics?

District names inaugural Emerging Teachers of the Year Music teacher named district’s 2020 Teacher of the Year
Courtney Titcomb, a first-grade teacher at Azalea Elementary School, and Olivia Crawford, a language arts teacher at Largo Middle School, were named the district’s inaugural Emerging Teachers of the Year.
David Martinez-Cooley, a music teacher at Leila G. Davis Elementary, has been named Pinellas County Schools’ 2020 Teacher of the Year. The award was presented Wednesday night during the Evening of Excellence at Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg. All 131 nominees were also recognized at the event.
Courtney Titcomb, a first-grade teacher at Azalea Elementary Schooi, named Emerging Teacher of the Year for elementary.
Olivia Crawford, a language arts teacher at Largo Middle School, named secondary Emerging Teacher of the Year. Martinez-Cooley has worked with the Pinellas County Schools for more than 12 years. He earned Master’s degrees in Music Education and Mathematics Education from the University of Florida. Martinez-Cooley is a recognized leader among Pinellas music educators. He serves on the district’s textbook adoption committee to choose new digital resources for the district’s elementary music students and he helped with revising and refining the district’s grade level key learnings. He has a very successful music program at the school and that success is due to his willingness to always find new and unique ways of engaging his general music students. David Martinez-Cooley will now represent the district in the state Teacher of the Year competition sponsored by the Florida Department of Education.

Student artworks on display at the Dunedin Fine Art Center More than 100 elementary school students were honored on this past January for having their artworks selected for the Creative Start Elementary Schools Exhibit. The exhibit, which features art by students from schools beginning with the letters A-M, are on display at the Dunedin Fine Art Center.
