Do you notice a pattern? The kids that aren’t Daniel definitely did! Of course many of the occupations were things that none of my kids are well-suited for, so the process of elimination frequently led me to my creative, low-key younger son. I don’t actually think Daniel would make a great waiter for example - he’s a little too laid back with no sense of urgency. But while David is very precise and would probably never make a mistake on an order, he is also very impatient and could easily end up alienating a good number of customers and kitchen employees alike. Then my sweet, outgoing, but slightly scatterbrained Hanna would have a great rapport with her customers and coworkers, but might never actually get an order right. And while Haylee might eventually come out of her shell, at this point in her life, she is too shy to think she will ever make a living at a profession that requires that level of customer interaction.

We had a good time, and I think it helped the kids to recognize some of their own strengths as well as

Because of the occupations they picked though, it ended up going something like this: • Which of us would make the best artist? That would be Daniel.

And had they asked about different professions like “Who would make the best actor?” (not Daniel), “Who would make the best pharmacist?” (nope, not Daniel), or “Who would make the best pilot?” (definitely not Daniel!), the results might not have been quite so lopsided. And they never did ask me who would make the best lawyer either. But with David giving me at least two or three reasons why he was actually the best choice for every single occupation except “Disney character”, I can assure you that would have been a very obvious decision! St. Patrick’s Day, which is observed on the 17th of March by people around the world, is a day to celebrate the life of St. Patrick and the culture of Ireland. The St. Patrick’s Day custom came to America in 1737, when it was publicly celebrated in Boston. Even if your family has not a wee smidgen of Irish heritage, it’s great fun to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by donning your green.

Each year on March 14th at 1:59 pm many math and science classrooms around the world break from their usual routines to observe the festivities of “Pi Day”. Pi Day commemorates the first few digits of one of the oldest know constants, 3.14159…. and it also happens to coincide with Albert Einstein’s birthday - which makes it a doubly cool day for math enthusiasts. Peeps Bunny Table Centerpiece You need: • Six inch glass cube vase • Four inch glass cube vase • Bag of Jelly beans • One or two packages of mini Peeps • Spring flowers – if you want to eat the candy later on, use artificial flowers

Directions: 1. Take the four inch cube vase and put it inside the center of the six inch cube vase. 2. Add the colorful jelly beans between the walls of the cube vases. 3. Dental Health Tips for Teens by Dr. Nick Reynolds, Northeast Orthodontics Dental decay is the most common chronic disease in young people between the ages of 5 and 17, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Here are some simple tips your teens can follow to stop cavities before they start. • Skip soda. Teens are drinking more soft drinks than ever, both in school and at home. Sugar in sweetened sodas can cause cavities, and acidic flavor additives (found in both unsweetened and sweetened sodas) can also erode and damage tooth enamel. If you must drink soda, try these tips to reduce its harm: sip soda through a straw to cut down on the contact the beverage has with teeth, and rinse the mouth with water after drinking soda. • Play it safe. Contact sports can cause oral injuries, but teens can prevent injuries by wearing a mouthguard while playing sports. More than 200,000 injuries to

the mouth and jaw occur each year, and dentists regularly recommend the use of mouthguards in a variety of sports activities. Whether a mouthguard is custom-fitted by a dentist or bought at a store, teens should keep it clean by rinsing it often and storing it in a ventilated container. • Avoid oral piercings. People with tongue or other mouth piercings can easily chip their teeth while eating, sleeping, talking and chewing. The fracture can be confined to tooth enamel and require a filling, or it may go deeper, which can lead to a root canal or tooth extraction. Infections are also common with oral piercings. The tongue can swell after being punctured, and in some cases can become infected and swell to such a degree that it interferes with breathing. Unclean piercing equipment can cause other infections, such as blood-borne hepatitis.

• Make time for healthy habits. Teens eat quick meals in the form of “nutrition” bars and fast food to stay alert and on schedule between school, extracurricular activities and part-time jobs. However, these habits can permanently damage oral and overall health. Teens should have access to healthy snacks such as apples, carrot sticks and cheese. Keeping a travelsize toothbrush in a locker or backpack can help teens keep up good teeth-cleaning habits by brushing after meals and snacks. Chewing sugarless gum with xylitol (a natural sweetener) after meals or snacks can also help cleanse the mouth. Drinking water throughout the day can help cleanse the teeth of excess bacteria and food debris.

Families Not Just Surviving... But Thriving! When you think of camping “roughing it” might be a term that first comes to mind. Well, not for the dads and families at Plato Academy. These dads are part of the All Pro Dad Program and because they are involved in this program they think a little “outside the box”. Regularly, these dads set aside time to meet together at school with their children and bond as a family. They sit together over breakfast and talk about a character trait like teamwork, sportsmanship, and respect to name a few. The All Pro Dad program is designed to encourage dads, give them tools to engage with their family, and challenge them to “huddle-up” and continue that conversation well beyond breakfast with their children.

It is these continuing discussions that sparked something wonderful and amazing at Plato Academy. Back in 2012, the dads thought it would be a great idea to get together as a group and go camping for a few days. Dads wanted to include the entire family for this event and the original group started off with 30 families. One tenet that the dads are passionate about is that the dads would lead the event and that the moms deserve break from volunteering to work during the event. The men would do the work and the ladies could kick back and relax. Ashley tells us she enjoys the camaraderie, and the village feel of the campout. Lynn enjoys that the dads do all the planning of the activities, organize all the fun, cook and serve all the meals & clean-up which makes the trip the best experience for moms.

cash prize award. The golf cart competition ends with a parade. The scavenger hunt promotes good communication and problem solving skills. This year a DJ was added at the Friday night pizza party to keep the energy up. The dancing turned out to be a big hit! Plato families enjoy meals together as a group and share the work. The Sunday evening meal is a favorite featuring grilled steak and chicken. Each day, at dusk, there is a movie, popcorn, hot chocolate, and roast s’mores over the fire. The Plato Academy campout is organized and led by a Leadership Team (20 dads) who plan

& coordinate a group of volunteers. All the dads volunteer a few hours during the campout to help out, which spreads out the workload. It also maximizes the time spent with their family. This volunteer process is why the event is so successful. The campout is held in February and advertised at the beginning of the school year and usually is SOLD OUT within a month. The 2018 campout, in its seventh year, hosted 225 families from 9 different campuses (almost 1,000 campers). Derek told us this was his first campout and that it was an amazing experience for him to bond more with his son Jackson. Roger, who served on the welcoming crew, indicated this was his third year attending the campout. He likes the great atmosphere, interactive activities, and can let his son have fun. Mark has attended for four years and has

developed a great family dynamic. His family enjoys the ability to be worry-free during the whole event. The campout attendance grows each year for the simple reason that Plato families enjoy knowing that they are not alone in parenting. They have a resource in each other that allows them to “do life together” and it all started with dads engaging with their kids through the All Pro Dad program.

Florida’s Flawed Anti-Texting and Driving Laws by Chris Reynolds

victed of a DUI can lose their license, pay thousands of dollars in fines and court costs, attend educational courses on the dangers of drinking and driving, and potentially end up in jail for repeat offenders. The purpose of these DUI laws is because we know how dangerous drunk drivers are on our Florida roadways.

It is common knowledge by now that texting and driving is extremely dangerous. However, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, 2015 saw 214 deaths and 45,740 motor vehicle accidents due to distracted driving in Florida. These numbers are a significant increase from 2012, when 175 people died and there were 33,511 distracted driving crashes. That is an increase of 22% in deaths and 36% increase in the number of automobile collisions due to distracted driving. Further, it seems that the reported numbers of distracted driving accidents is likely lower than the real number. For example, it doesn’t seem likely that a driver in an accident will often freely admit to law enforcement that they were texting when the accident occurred. The accurate numbers of deaths and accidents are likely much higher. Currently, Florida’s ban on texting and driving is found in Florida Statute 316.305. That law makes texting and driving a “secondary offense,” which means that the police are not allowed to stop a driver solely for texting and driving. Only if law enforcement observes a “primary offense,” such as speeding, can the officer then issue a citation for texting and driving. Moreover, even if the police do issue a citation for texting and driving, the fine is only $30 for a first-time offender, and it increases only to $60 for a second-time offender.

We can no longer claim ignorance of the similar dangers posed by texting and driving, and so we must have stronger laws to deter texting and driving, while also educating the public about the dangers involved. Only then can we reasonably expect the number of texting and driving accidents to drop.

In 2015, only 3,417 citations were issued for texting and driving.

• 1 loaf pound cake, or ½ large (bundt) pound cake • 32 ounces strawberries • 1 16-ounce package non-dairy whipped topping, thawed 1. Cut or break cake into bite-size cubes. I'm a firm believer in getting everyone around the table together for dinner to reconnect with each other, discuss the day's events and to nourish our bodies with good home-cooked food.

Last month I talked about the importance of learning how to set a proper table. Today, I'm going to talk about something else that makes sitting down to a meal an enjoyable experience. Today we're talking table manners. My children were taught how to behave at the table from the time they were in their booster seats, so they naturally grew up knowing what to do and what not to do at the table. This might not seem like a significant life skill to some people, but I believe that it is. Think about it. How quickly can someone be turned off by a person chewing loudly with their mouth open in a formal dinner setting? It drives me up the wall when someone reaches over my plate to grab

• Say please and thank you • No toys at the table • Ask to be excused from the table • Set your napkin in your lap and to use it when wiping your face • Thank the person who cooked the meal • Use utensils to eat • Take small bites • No running around or yelling during dinner For children at the higher end of this age bracket, they can be taught to say nice things about the foods they like and to not make a fuss about the foods they don't like.

It's never too early to start teaching the basic stuff, like washing your hands before going to the table and sitting down on your chair to eat. Those things can start being drilled into a child as young as 2. Between then and kindergarten age, here are some other basic table manners you can start to teach:

A child at this age should automatically wash their hands before sitting down at the table and they should already be sitting nicely at the table, and saying please and thank you. • Wait until everyone is served before starting to eat Include children in discussion around the table and make sure your child knows that you're interested in hearing about their day. When they have these manners down as children, it's really just a matter of refining them through young adulthood. Comment on their good manners when you find they're using them. Your praise goes a long way. Teenagers should already have these basic table manners down, but please make sure there's a "no phones at the table" rule in place. Lead by example! Cardio Kickboxing: An Intensely FUN Class Cardio kickboxing refers to a fitness class delivered and practiced in groups, where a combination of fast-paced cardio and martial art techniques is applied. It’s often referred as an intense, high-energy workout that tackles beginners and pro athletes alike. Cardio kickboxing results can be measured in a number of ways, especially by building stamina, increasing flexibility, improving coordination and – the most sought of all – burning calories while building strong, lean muscles. How long can you hold your breath?

Manatees go to the water’s surface every three to five minutes to breathe. But what makes this even cooler? They can stay underwater for much longer, holding their breath for up to 20 minutes.

The calf remains close to its mother for up to two years. It is dependent on its mother not only for nutrition, but also for learning about feeding and resting areas, travel routes, and warm water refuges.

With all the hoopla of the NCAA Basketball tournament going on, we thought it appropriate to share with you some advice from one of the greatest coaches ever. The following excerpt comes from Coach John Wooden and Jay Carty’s book Coach Wooden’s Pyramid of Success. Success is peace of mind that is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming.

Winning seems so important, but it actually is irrelevant. Having attempted to give our all is what matters—and we are the only ones who really know the truth about our own capabilities and performance. Did we do our best at this point in our life? Did we leave all we had to give on the field, in the classroom, at the office or in the trenches? If we did, then we are a success – at that stage of our life. But being successful at one point doesn’t necessarily make us a success at every point – and it does not mean that we reach the apex. We must learn to give our all in one success after another. Likewise, accomplishing certain goals does not necessarily translate to success.

Goals are wonderful in that they stretch us and help us to reach our potential, but making or missing goals has nothing to do with success.

We should be more concerned with our character than with our reputation: Our character is what we truly are, while our reputation is merely what others perceive us to be. The first men’s college basketball game was played on January 18, 1896 between the University of Iowa and the University of Chicago. The final score was a mind blowing 15-12. (There weren’t a lot of slam dunks and fast breaks back then). The first NCAA basketball tournament was held in 1939 and included 8 teams that eventually grew to sixty four teams. Division I basketball’s all-time leading scorer is Pete Maravich, who played at Louisiana State University from 1968 through 1970. Maravich scored 3,667 points in just three years and averaged an astounding 44.2 points per game.

with Jim Daly Q: With two working adults and three teens in the house, I feel like our family is more disconnected than ever; everybody seems to be on their own schedule. What’s one thing we can do to stay close? Jim: I’ll ask this: How often does your family have dinner together? I know it’s challenging—it sure is in our house—but it’s one of the best time investments you can make. The statistics speak for themselves. The largest federally funded study of American teenagers found a strong link between regular family meals and academic success, psychological health, as well as lower rates of alcohol and drug abuse, early sexual activity and suicide. A 2005 Columbia University study found that teenagers who eat with their families at least five times a week

are more likely to get better grades and less likely to have substance abuse problems. A University of Michigan study found that mealtime is the single greatest predictor of better achievement—more than studying, sports or other school activities. And research conducted at the University of Minnesota found that adolescent girls who ate with their families regularly were at far less risk for anorexia and bulimia than girls who didn’t eat with their families. I could quote studies all day, but I think we all know that it’s just common sense. It’s a beneficial thing for families to spend time together whenever possible.

I see both of them fairly often and want to encourage them, but I feel awkward. Jim: It’s natural to want to ease a loved one’s pain. But we’ve all stumbled through enough uncomfortable moments to know finding the right words can be tricky. Still, you can offer something meaningful and truly comforting to a friend or family member who’s struggling. To start with, don’t try to avoid whatever dark emotion they’re feeling. Be willing to enter into it.

It’s when you’re running away from a person’s pain that you’ll tend to say something trite or insensitive. Instead, connect with the person by saying, “I’m here for you.” Then, stay engaged. You see, there may be moments along the way when everything in their life seems relatively back to normal. That’s usually when most people minimize the ongoing crisis their loved one is experiencing. And it’s why it’s one thing to say you’ll be there, but another

WOMAN HAS NAGGING FEELING THAT SHE’S “JUST A MOM” Q: When our extended family gathered a couple of months ago, I felt overshadowed and inadequate around other women. My sisters and female cousins all have satisfying careers, but I’m just a mom. Sometimes I feel like a complete failure. Jim: Mothers often have a way of seeing their own shortcomings and minimizing the role they play in their kids’ lives. I don’t believe those perceptions are accurate, but I can certainly understand what drives them. On the surface, there’s nothing glamorous about chasing kids around the house, fixing meal after meal and stepping on toys scattered down the hallway. But I agree with author Lisa-Jo Baker, who says mothers are modern day superheroes. Their capes may be a little tattered at the end of a long day of laundry and runny noses. Still, moms deserve superhero status for all they do for their kids.

That’s because there is nothing ordinary about motherhood. Moms aren’t simply changing diapers; they’re molding character. That’s what inspired poet William Ross Wallace to pen the verse titled “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle Is the Hand That Rules the World.” His point is that beginning at birth, a mom’s influence has profound impact on what any person—and especially the “great and powerful”—will eventually become. Every famous world-changer has had (and will have) a mother. Directing the course of a child’s life is no easy task. That’s why on any given day a lot of mothers may feel like they’re doing a terrible job. But remember this: Motherhood isn’t hard because you’re so bad at it. It’s hard because -- like no other role in life -- it requires sacrificing your own wants and desires on behalf of others. So, please, give yourself some grace. Laying down your life for your children takes more than “just a mom.” It takes a superhero.

Over time, and many Hallmark movies, I have come to realize that no matter how different the storylines might be, all great love stories have the same element, a love that is finally found because someone was willing to take the risk, to pay the price and pursue the person with whom they were destined to live life.

As we approach the Easter season, I am reminded of a love story that would rival any other in terms of the price paid. It is a narrative that transcends the narrowly defined parameters of most love stories. While it is not necessarily a romantic portrayal of love, it is the ultimate depiction of taking a risk, paying the ultimate price and pursuing a relationship with someone that was oblivious to what was taking place around them. It is the story of a man who gave his life so others might live. It is the story of Jesus, a man brutally beaten in order to purchase peace for those whom he loved.

More teens than ever are making new friends online, mostly through social media. But the digital age definitely has a downside, too. A recent Pew Research Center study provides details.

Online drama. More than two-thirds of teens who use social media say it contributes to drama among friends. More than half have seen postings about events to which they weren’t invited, and nearly 40 percent say they feel pressure to post content that makes them popular or look good to others. And 21 percent of teens report feeling worse about their own lives because of what they see from others on social media.

More than 450 students from elementary, middle and high schools were recognized at the Inaugural Maria Edmonds Hispanic Achievement Awards Ceremony. The event, which was held this past month at Ruth Eckerd Hall, honored the legacy of Maria Nieves Edmonds. Mrs. Edmonds, who passed away Jan. 19, 2017, was an advocate for women, children and members of the Hispanic Community. She was an Associate Provost at St. Petersburg College and served on the Juvenile Welfare Board and as chairperson for the Hispanic Leadership Council. At the event, St. Petersburg College, the University of South Florida St. Petersburg and Pinellas Technical College announced scholarship opportunities for our Hispanic students. BACK TO BASICS

You know The Golden Rule – do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Do you know these are the words of Jesus, to a large crowd, recorded in the book of Matthew (7:12)? In my elementary years, The Golden Rule was something practiced and recited. It was integrated into the lessons taught at school and permeated the culture.

By high school, things were different. Looking back, I recall several students being tormented and verbally abused by other students. Kids who were socially awkward, economically disadvantaged, academically challenged or less attractive than average were the brunt of jokes and snickers. While many practiced the words of Jesus, others forfeited the teaching to exalt self, or sadistically enjoyed making fun of classmates. High school was a bigger environment than elementary

school and easier to pick on others without being held accountable. These actions were just plain mean. Today, we use the word bully to describe a person who is unkind and mean to others. Bullying has become more widespread and allowed to fester in our schools. Meanness is a condition of the heart, as is its oppositekindness. Luke 6:45 states, “A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” Jesus is communicating a simple truth- garbage in, garbage out. What goes into the heart is determined by the voices our children listen to. Children are influenced by the example of others, by the messages communicated through television shows, music, books, video games, peers, and social media sites. The home, the playground, the neighborhood, church and school are places where values are developed, character is cultivated, and the heart is filled—for better or for worse.

So, what is it about reading with an adult that is so important? Children who see their parents reading are much more likely to read for pleasure as they get older. Students who read for pleasure tend to be better readers and writers and to score better on tests. A recent study has shown that children who grow up in homes with many books obtain on average 3 years more schooling than children in homes with few or no books, regardless of parental education level, occupation, or socio-economic status. The importance of reading goes far beyond school success. Reading with children is an important bonding moment. It says to your child that despite your busy day, you want to take time to focus on him or her for a while. Reading with a child provides a great opportunity for a close snuggle on the couch.

Mathematics educator named Pinellas 2018 Teacher of the Year

Jessie Boyce, a mathematics teacher at Tyrone Middle School, was named the Pinellas County Schools Outstanding Educator of the Year. The announcement was made Wednesday night at the Evening of Excellence held at St. Petersburg’s Mahaffey Theater. Boyce has been teaching for 10 years, the last five at Tyrone Middle School. She has taught both math and science but most recently has been teaching sixth-grade math. Boyce helped start a one-to-one technology initiative as Tyrone Middle transitioned to the Center for Innovation and Digital Learning. As part of the Pinellas Innovates initiative, she has spearheaded personalized learning and

flexible seating in the county. Boyce writes, provides training, speaks at conferences and blogs about education and ways to bring innovation into the classroom. Boyce will receive cash and prizes valued at approximately $10,000 including cash awards totaling almost $5,000 from the Pinellas Education Foundation and the Pinellas Community Foundation. She will receive a Keg A Que gas grill from Clearwater Gas System, a limo ride to school courtesy of His & Hers Limousines, a gift basket from Nardo’s Natural Organic Skin Care, Mahaffey Theater tickets courtesy of the Bill Edwards Foundation for the Arts, a

two-night stay at the Hotel Indigo, a weekend luxury car rental from Crown Auto Dealerships, a $3,500 scholarship from Nova Southeastern University, the Outstanding Educator commemorative ring courtesy of Balfour, tickets to Walt Disney World, Sea World and Aquatica courtesy of Disney and Sea World respectively, and special recognition at the Education Night with the Rays in the spring at Tropicana Field. Jenni Herman, a second-grade teacher at Pinellas Central Elementary, was named the Outstanding Educator Fan Favorite Award. This award is voted on by students, parents and the community on the Education Foundation’s Facebook page. As the Fan Favorite, Jenni will receive a special recognition and the opportunity to throw out the first pitch at Education

Night with the Rays at Tropicana Field and a personalized Rays jersey. She will receive a Keg A Que from Clearwater Gas System, Mahaffey Theater tickets courtesy of the Bill Edwards Foundation for the Arts, a two-night stay at the Hotel Indigo, and other gifts. All Educator of the Year finalists will receive a $500 cash award from the Pinellas Education Foundation, an autographed copy of Wanderlust by Dick Jacobs, a $2,500 scholarship from Nova Southeastern University and other gifts. The Evening of Excellence was presented by the Pinellas Education Foundation and Pinellas County Schools and sponsors Ditek, Humana and the Tampa Bay Rays.
