mention it always falls on the weekend closest to his birthday? But he is a very good sport. This month, Hanna, Haylee and I will be participating in our 5th Princess weekend. Ten-year-old Haylee takes her running fairly seriously. She is going to be running her second 10K, and although she’s not fast enough to set any records, she has been training pretty faithfully.

Parent to Parent Ever since my daughters and I discovered Disney races, my husband has had the distinct pleasure of spending his birthday weekend at Walt Disney World at the same time as the entire resort is overrun by thousands and thousands of “princesses” for the Princess Half Marathon weekend. Sometimes, he even runs the 5K with us, but usually, he is just a spectator, photographer, and chauffeur. Did I

Fourteen-year-old Hanna, on the other hand, primarily likes to run Disney races because they have really cool medals. And since the Half Marathon has the best medal, and she is now old enough to participate, that’s what she will be running (on her dad’s actual birthday). Like Haylee, she too has been training, but unlike Haylee, she takes the “walk breaks” far more seriously than she does her actual running. She likes to run for about 30 seconds at a time before taking a 30 second (or longer) walk break. So at that pace, her training runs take a very long time! Thankfully Disney has a pretty generous time limit, so she won’t have any problem getting her coveted medal, but I have a feeling that if you throw in a bathroom break or two (she takes at least two during a long run) and a picture in front of the castle, it’s going to take us most of that three and a half hour time limit.

And my lucky husband gets to wake up early to come out and cheer for us on his birthday. He’ll definitely be there on Main Street in the Magic Kingdom (about halfway through the race) and at the finish line to cheer, take pictures, and drive us back to our hotel. I’m sure there is nothing he would rather be doing that morning! Until next time,

Jennifer

With this in mind, it’s time to put on some USA attitude and show support for our American Olympic athletes! USA! USA! USA!

While there are varying opinions as to the origin of Valentine’s Day, some historians believe that it originated with St. Valentine. Legend states that St. Valentine was imprisoned by Claudius II after refusing to honor an order forbidding marriage. On the evening before Valentine was to be executed, he wrote the first “valentine” to the jailer’s daughter whom he had befriended. The note was addressed to “his beloved” and read “from your Valentine.” Valentine was martyred on February 14, 269 A.D.

To be more romantic, don’t make things about your happiness but about your wife’s happiness instead. When you do that, you’ll be romantic in her eyes. And Valentine’s Day will be just an extension of the natural romantic that you now are. Here are 4 ways you can make Valentine’s Day and your marriage not about you but about your wife.

1. Set her apart. It’s here, fellas. Valentine’s Day is upon is. To some, the mere thought may cause you to break into a cold sweat. It’s the one day of the year where we are supposed to be, no, have to be romantic with our spouse. Well, Valentine’s Day is really not the only day of the year we are supposed to be romantic, but it is one of those days where we are encouraged to do so and may be judged if we’re not. For those of us who don’t know the meaning of the word romantic or who don’t have a romantic bone in our bodies, it can be a challenge. For those of us who struggle in the romance department, there is a trick, a hack that can help you be the most ro-

mantic person on every day of the year. It’s simple, but not easy. When it comes to Valentine’s Day, it’s not about you—and neither is your marriage. When we understand this and act according to it, romance will be easy. Try this: Think back to your dating days before you and your spouse were married. One of your biggest priorities was making things about her. The restaurant, the date night activity, the clothes or cologne you wore, the doors you opened for her. You made it about her. Then you got married. Maybe you chose to go wherever to eat, date nights disappeared, and she didn’t always smell the fresh fragrance of cologne on you. Now, she may

Your wife has a spot that nobody else can or should occupy. Not your kids, your parents, your golfing buddies, your boss, or anybody. Let her know this and let others know this, with your words and actions.

2. Take on the hard stuff on her behalf. Ever heard of “good cop, bad cop.” Sometimes you have to be the “bad cop” in your

marriage in order to keep her looking good. Being willing to have the next couple of difficult conversations with your kids or family members. Do whatever you can to take some of the heat off of her. Volunteer for some of the harder cleaning items around the house, particularly the ones you know she hates.

3. Love her like you’d want to be loved. You probably treat yourself pretty darn good. You do your best to encourage yourself, to take care of your body and do what you think is best for you. Do that for your wife. Love her in a way that makes her feel loved. Be sure to find out her love language first.

4. Get close and intimate with her.

Intimacy is doing or sharing things with a person that you don’t do with anyone else. Do that with your wife. Share your deepest feelings, concerns, fears, dreams, and anything else. Don’t hold anything back, and don’t let anything get between you and her. When you do these things you will have no problem being romantic, and your wife will know Valentine’s Day and your marriage is not about you, but your love for her.

Witty and free-spirited, Kayla loves school, especially her science and English classes. But her favorite subjects overall are animals, particularly snakes. She even aspires to study reptiles and amphibians as a Herpetologist, when she grows up. For fun, Kayla enjoys watching sports or her favorite TV show ‘American Horror Story,’ going to Busch Gardens and playing board games. Perogies are her favorite food, but please hold the pickles. Kayla’s other favorites include the color blue and the Cheetah. If Kayla could change the world, she would make foster care different.

Bill & Pam Farrel

How Do You Spell LOVE? With Valentine’s Day season upon us, you might wonder how you spell L.O.V.E. In our book, The First Five Years, we explain how to create a memorable romantic encounter for your spouse no matter how many years you are married. Keep this acrostic for LOVE in mind as you make plans to wow the one you love:

Listen • Observe • Vary • Extract

Listen

Your spouse will drop hints about the things he or she loves and you can use these hints to create more romance and sizzle in your re-

lationship. For example, if you listen to Bill and me in a casual lunch conversation, you would be apt to find out that Bill loves things like: Football, fishing, cooking, joke telling, and the Bible. If you listen to Pam you’d discover she loves travel, biking, swimming, tennis, laughing, and helping women-and the spa! It doesn’t take much imagination then to know that if I (Pam) give Bill a day of ocean fishing or if he gave me a day at the spa, we would be more interested in each other at the end of that day. Bill and I also keep a running list of “loves” we discover about one another while listening.

For dating couples, being an active listener can show you are cherishing and valuing the one you are dating. If he or she shares a favorite food, type of entertainment, or hobby and you create a date that includes this you gain points in the romance column.

Observe

On the TV show Sherlock, Sherlock Holmes wows the audience by his keen detective skills of observation. You can become a detective and easily observe what will bless and ignite your spouse: • What raises stress in your partner-then make a plan to lower it • What lifts the spirit-then make a plan to repeat it • What calms the atmosphere-then recreate it • What things are collectible-then add to it • When he or she sighs or purrs-then repeat it • What makes him/her ask for more-then expand it • What draws him/her to you-then protect it

Vary

For married couples, when it comes to intimacy, don’t get in a rut. Vary the place, the lighting, and your invitation asking your mate to join you in some red hot monoga-

my. In our book, Red Hot Monogamy, we give over 200 Red Hot Romance ideas. One of the easiest ways to vary the experience is to keep the five senses in mind. Add new sounds/music, add new smells, textures, or tastes. Even dinner and a movie can become a rut if it is your weekly ritual. For all couples, dating and married, add in some active dates, some dates with friends and family as well as solo romantic moments to add dimension to your love.

Extract

To extract love, take an old idea and give it a new spin. Personalize it, shake it up, add to it. Take a tradition and give it a tilt: If you go to dinner each Thursday, next week eat it on the rooftop, or on a blanket at the park. If you usually work out as a couple, then make the next date a payoff- get some new athletic wear and try out a new activity. L.O.V.E: Listen, observe, vary and extract to create a love to look forward to living. It is possible to keep love as red hot as those candy hearts you munch on each Valentine’s Day-it just takes a little creativity and some L.O.V.E.

11 KEYS FOR

LOVING YOUR FAMILY

DUNGY DIARIES

by Tony Dungy

In the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, Derek Redmond believed he could win a silver medal for Great Britain. After five years of daily training and eight operations on his Achilles tendons, Derek had won the first two heats and was running in the semifinals of the 400 meters. Things were going as planned until, coming out of the first turn, he heard a snap and felt a sharp pain in his left leg. Derek went down in a heap on the track as he realized that his left hamstring had exploded, and with it, his dreams of an Olympic medal. He got to his feet and began to run—hop, really—to finish the race. He later said that he was determined to finish and therefore waved off the race officials, who were running toward him with a stretcher. And then he felt a hand on his shoulder.

Redmond began to push the hand of assistance away until he turned to find himself looking into the face of his father, Jim. When Jim Redmond had seen what had happened to his son, he had pushed his way out of the crowd and onto the track and rushed to tell Derek that he didn’t have to finish. But when Derek insisted that he complete the race, Jim said they would do it together.

Bornean Orangutan Born at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo New year, new zoo baby! Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo welcomes 2018 with the birth of a rare Bornean orangutan baby. The endangered primate was born in the early morning on Jan. 6, 2018, to experienced mother Dee Dee, weighing in at an estimated 3 pounds. There are fewer than 100 Bornean orangutans in 24 AZA-accredited institutions in North America, making this birth very significant for the species and the Tampa community. Dee Dee is quite the experienced mother, already giving birth four times successfully and this will be

father, Goyang’s third baby at the Zoo. In October, a human pregnancy test confirmed that Dee Dee was pregnant. The Zoo’s animal care team and veterinary staff worked closely with Dee Dee to voluntarily participate during ultrasounds. “Dee Dee continues to do well with her female baby. As an experienced mother, she didn’t show any signs of any possible issues. We determined that Dee Dee’s baby had turned during one of her regular ultrasound exams,” said Dr. Ray Ball, VP of Medical Sciences at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo.

“Careful monitoring and pre-natal care are important, but so is privacy. With veterinary medicine, the baby determines the day of birth, but the mom determines the time. With no signs of a high risk pregnancy, we let her take care of the labor naturally— she determined when it would be time to deliver her baby.” The Zoo is currently home to a group of seven endangered orangutans and participates in the Bornean Orangutan Species Survival Plan (SSP). The program of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) protects

wildlife species at risk of extinction. The baby will be the tenth Bornean orangutan born at the Zoo. “This is a significant birth for the entire critically endangered Bornean orangutan population,” said Chris Massaro, General Curator at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo. “It’s important to have the community along for this journey. We hope Dee Dee’s story inspires the public to become advocates for this incredible species and learn about the perils they face in the wild.”

Why Is It So Important to Wear Retainers After Orthodontic Treatment? by Dr. Nick Reynolds, Northeast Orthodontics “Really? My kid has to wear the retainer every night for the rest of their life? When I had braces, my orthodontist told me to wear it for just a couple years and then stop.” This is a very common comment we hear from curious parents when discussing the importance of wearing retainers after orthodontic treatment is completed. Where the misconception came from, we really aren’t quite sure. The evidence has been in the literature for decades about treatment relapse being predictable in both amount and timing. Nonetheless, the same surprised expression on parents’ faces are seen weekly when we deliver the news that we recommend night time wear, or as we call it, “nighttime for a lifetime” of the retainers after braces come off. For those of you wondering what exactly a retainer is and what it does, I will digress

and fill you in! The point of braces is to take your teeth from the natural position your body wants them in, to a position of a perfect bite and a handsome or beautiful smile. Once braces come off, we like to describe the teeth as being in “wet cement”. The bone and gum tissue around each and every tooth is immature. If left alone, your body will immediately fight to put the teeth back into the “natural” position they were before you ever had braces. The reality is, you have natural orthodontic forces in your mouth twentyfour hours a day. Your teeth’s position are a result of cheek pressure, tongue pressure and chewing forces. Braces did a great job overpowering those forces and putting the teeth in their perfect position, and retainers are your insurance policy of keeping them there. The retainers themselves are typically made of plastic, or acrylic, and they fit over the teeth to keep them placed in the proper position. Ev-

ery patient has unique teeth, and unique treatment circumstances, so we prescribe and tailor make the retainers for each individual patient. Our office has a protocol of requesting you wear your retainers full time (twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week) for the first month after the braces come off, and then we will taper the number of hours down to nighttime only wear (approximately eight to ten hours) by month three. We find that starting full time and tapering down the number of hours increases the chance of the patient’s compliance with following the protocol long term and minimizes the pressure and soreness of wearing the retainers much quicker. Additionally, we also offer a bonded wire retainer behind the lower front teeth, if requested. We are very proud of our treatments, and want you to

maintain that healthy and wonderful smile forever. After all, our completed cases are our best advertisement. We want you to walk around town with a huge smile on your face, and tell everyone it was our office that made your smile perfect!

Dr. Nick Reynolds “Since as long as I can remember, it’s been my goal to pursue a career in which I can work with my hands, help someone everyday, be artistic, strive for perfection, and provide for my community. Orthodontics is the perfect marriage of all those things. I couldn’t see myself doing anything else! My goal at Northeast Orthodontics is to provide the children and adults of St. Petersburg with handsome and beautiful smiles while providing first class service, state of the art care, and a friendly atmosphere.”

Common Home Buying Mistakes by Sonny Glover and Melody Gallion

It can be easy to get lost and confused during the home buying process. Proper planning is paramount. It’s also helpful to learn from other people’s mistakes. Here are some of the most common errors people make when shopping for a new home.

Not budgeting for everything

Yes, this sounds obvious, but many people forget about some of the costs of buying a home. There are added costs such as furniture and appliances, DIY projects, moving fees, or your first mortgage payment. This last one is especially important—setting a budget may help you determine how much you can comfortably afford to pay for your mortgage.

Neglecting your credit score Your credit score will play a major role in the home buying process. This 3-digit number might be the thing that keeps you from your new home! Credit reports often contain errors or misinformation, so it’s important to retrieve your report ahead of time and fix any errors before sending it out to lenders. Looking at your credit reports may also give you a better idea of what interest rates you can expect so you can make room for them in your budget.

Trusting verbal agreements

A home seller can verbally accept your bid and still turn around and give it to someone else if a higher bidder comes along. So before you celebrate your new home, make sure you’ve signed paperwork!

Sonny Glover

As a Florida native, who was born and raised in the area, I can offer you local expertise that will streamline your home shopping or selling experience. My 7 years of previous luxury sales experience helps you get the best price for your home and delivers value to buyers, as well.

Skipping the home inspection

Sweating the small things

You can’t expect the seller to tell you about all the potential problems you might face if you buy their home. There might even be issues with the house that the seller isn’t aware of, which is why it’s crucial to hire an inspector to take a look through the house. An inspector will examine the overall foundation and structural features of a house. It’s their job to find these areas of concern so that you don’t have to worry about them later on! (Tip: Don’t be too reliant on the inspector. You may catch problems that they sometimes miss.)

Don’t like the color of a house or the wallpaper inside? Is there something about the kitchen that you just can’t stand? Don’t sweat the small things! Focus instead on the location and the overall structure of the house. Once you move in you can change the small things you don’t like and make your house a home! If you avoid these mistakes and work closely with a CENTURY 21® Affiliated Sales Associate, you may just find the home you’ve been searching for!

XXIII Winter Olymp

Let the Games B

If there’s one event that brings people together, it’s the Olympics! And we are eagerly looking forward to the 2018 Winter Olympics which will be held this February. The 23rd Olympic Winter Games will officially begin on February 8th and we’re ready to give our colder sports some love. So, get ready to light a torch and set out for gold, because the Games are getting ready to begin!

Here are 25 things to know about this year’s games:

1

The 2018 PyeongChang Olympics run Feb. 9-25, officially. But competition actually starts a day earlier on the 8th.

2

PyeongChang, South Korea is 13 hours ahead of Tampa, Florida.

3

Complete coverage of the Winter Olympics will be broadcast on NBC, NBCSN, CNBC, MSNBC, USA Network, Telemundo, NBC Universo, Olympic Channel, the NBC Sports app, and NBCOlympics.com.

4

Katie Couric is returning to NBC to host the Opening Ceremony.

5

About 240 American athletes are preparing to compete in the winter games.

6

After two balmy Winter Olympics — 2010 Vancouver and 2014 Sochi — this one should see real winter conditions with average lows in the mountain venues expected to dip below -10°C (14°F).

7

8

The Mascots for the 2018 Winter Olympics are Soohorang (White tiger) and Bandabi (Black bear). Soohorang is considered as Korea’s guardian animal.

9

The official slogan for the 2018 Winter Olympics is “Passion. Connected.”

10

Ecuador, Eritrea, Kosovo, Malaysia, and Singapore are scheduled to make their Winter Olympics debut.

11

The Nigerian women’s bobsled team qualified for the Games, marking the first time a bobsled team from the continent of Africa will compete at the Olympics.

Russia is still in, mostly. As punishment for running a massive doping regime that undermined at least two Olympics, athletes who are cleared by a special testing panel won’t wear traditional Russian uniforms but ones that say Olympic Athlete from Russia.

The opening and closing ceremonies are being held in a 35,000-seat open-air stadium.

13

Curling fans rejoice: It’s the one sport which begins the day before the opening ceremony and ends on the final day of the Games, making it the only sport to be contested every single day.

14

North Korea has agreed to send athletes and officials to February’s Olympics.

15

The Olympic host city has long been named Pyeongchang but organizers suggested the spelling to PyeongChang to further distinguish it from the North Korean capital Pyongyang.

16

The United States medal hopes are strong with the U.S.A. currently ranked third in World Cup standings, behind Germany and Canada.

17

The NHL decided its players couldn’t go to the PyeongChang Games, so it will be much harder for the U.S. team to win the gold in men’s hockey. www.gulfcoastfamily.org

A total of 2,900 athletes from 95 countries are expected to compete. That’s far fewer than compete at the Summer Games, which attract more than 11,000 athletes from more than 200 countries.

21

19

There are 102 medal events, the most ever at a Winter Games.

22

20

This year’s games include six new events: snowboard big air (men’s and women’s), speed skating mass start (men’s and women’s), curling mixed doubles and the Alpine team event.

23

The gold medals weigh 586 grams, which would mean they’d be worth nearly $25,000 each if they were made of pure gold. However, they’re not. They’re made of silver and plated with six grams of gold. Instead of flowers during their podium ceremony, medalists will be given a small Games mascot — a stuffed white tiger named Soohorang — wearing a gold, silver or bronze hat and wooden gift featuring mountain scenes of PyeongChang. Closing ceremonies will be on Sunday, February 25.

24

On the final day of the last two Winter Olympics, there wasn’t a single women’s medal event. This time, there are an equal number of men’s and women’s events.

25

The PyeongChang Olympic Emblem symbolizes harmony. It comprises five colors, namely, yellow, green, blue, red and black. The colors are based on the motif of the Olympic ring and Korea’s five cardinal colors.

American Top Team Take Me St. Petersburg Out to the Martial Arts for the

Whole Family

Spring training gets into full swing in February here in Florida, and for families who have a passion for our national pastime, spring training is the ideal time to see your favorite players at their pre-season best – having fun, willing to sign autographs and open to mingling with the fans. At Spring Training, you can watch players like Evan Longoria and Miguel Cabrera take morning batting practice in settings so intimate it feels as if they could just as easily be at your neighborhood ball field. As any true fan of baseball will tell you, Spring Training is not just about the game, it’s about the experience. Here are some tips to ensure that you and your family have an enjoyable day at the ballpark. • Bring your glove: Arrive at the park for morning workouts about 10am and you’ll see balls flying out into the parking lot. • Say cheese!: Spring Training is jam packed with Kodak moments, so have your camera ready.

• Autograph please? Bring a couple new Sharpies and maybe a extra ball or two. The best opportunities are after morning workouts from about 10 to 11 a.m. • Get good seats: Spring Training ballparks are much smaller than their major league counterparts, so nearly every seat seems close to the field. • Plan for the weather: Remember to always WEAR SUNSCREEN. Don’t make the mistake that so many sun-seeking Midwesterners do. • Relax!: The absolute best part about a family spring training trip is the simplicity of it. This February and March, make it a point to take the family to a Spring Training ballgame and just maybe, you’ll start a fun new tradition. Of course, be prepared. Once might not be enough as the kids will be begging to go to more games.

Math Success Begins With Algebra Judy Adorno, Director, Sylvan of St. Petersburg In today’s society, everyone, not just those who are mathematically inclined, must understand algebraic concepts and be able to work with technology. Changes in society and new expectations of colleges and employers have revolutionized math curriculums. Success in algebra often correlates to success in college, so it is very important for today’s students to do their best with this critical subject. Parents can sometimes feel intimidated because they lack experience with updated math teaching and technology. What practical steps can be taken to ease parental concerns and help families build confidence in this new approach to middle and high school mathematics?

What Parents Need to Know

Students who take advanced mathematics courses during high school, and begin to study algebra during middle school, are at an advantage. Traditionally, students cannot take a higher-level mathematics class

in high school until they have successfully completed Algebra 1.

can restrict a student’s college options and limit their career aspirations.

it allows students to easily absorb and retain crucial math concepts.

What Parents Can Do

Fortunately, parents can nurture and build comprehension by blending common sense and state-of-the-art technology to ensure a positive learning experience. Sylvan Learning, the leading provider of tutoring to all ages, grades and skill levels, believes, in order to make competent decisions, children must learn to analyze facts and understand complex situations.

Persuade children to take additional math classes. Many students indicate that they do not plan to take math classes beyond their school requirements. Math classes offer critical learning skills that are needed throughout life. Success in algebra correlates with success in higher education and learning reasoning skills. Taking additional math classes helps children to become logical, independent thinkers.

According to research from Ohio State University’s Center for Cognitive Science, math technology and how-to instructional videos allow students to “come to the understanding themselves using their critical thinking skills instead of relying on memorization.”

Encourage children to take algebra early in their educational careers, if they are academically ready. Students who do not take courses covering algebraic concepts early in their schooling risk missing important opportunities for growth. By the end of junior and senior years, students who have not planned ahead, have fewer options in what classes they can take and may not be able to complete prerequisite courses. This

Incorporate technology. Technology should support math instruction and students should be encouraged to use all of the modern tools at their disposal to gain an understanding of the underlying reasoning and computations used in problem-solving. Educators believe that infusing learning aids and technology during in-school math instruction and homework completion provides an advantage at test time because

Happy. Secure. Inspired.

The Power of Parents

To support your child’s math learning, parents must believe that everyone can learn mathematics, and that learning math is essential to lifelong success. Experts agree that parents can encourage a positive attitude towards mathematics by boosting a child’s confidence and competence. Studies indicate that people who have experienced long-term difficulty with a subject tend to give up quicker than those who have met with success. Therefore, it is important for parents to intervene as soon as a child exhibit signs that he is struggling with a concept.

Play! Learn! Grow!

Pinellas County Schools Pre-K 3 and VPK

Nurturing programs where children: • Develop social and emotional skills • Build language and communication skills • Explore math and science • Discover the joy of learning

Sara Carroll Klug, a teacher of exceptional students at Morgan Fitzgerald Middle School, has been selected to receive the 2018 Clarissa Hug Teacher of the Year Award from the Council for Exceptional Children. Klug has taught at Morgan Fitzgerald Middle for 36 years. An announcement from the Council for Exceptional Children highlighted some of the many reasons Klug was selected for this honor: She implements lessons and interventions that are research based and data driven, while providing regular feedback on student work and behavior. She provides a supportive environment and instills rituals to guide students through their day. Her classroom includes a ticket reward system that allows students to become eligible for small prizes, a weekly rotation of students into the role of co-teacher, and hands-on activities such as a class butter-making project intended to bring a reading assignment to life.

She has also taught special education at the university level for nine years. The Clarissa Hug Teacher of the Year Award recognizes an outstanding teacher of children with disabilities and/ or gifts and talents. The award honors a CEC member whose work reflects significant educational success for students, continued professional development and the highest standard of educational quality. Love is a Powerful Motivator Dr. Kira Wilson

Red and pink hearts are everywhere. Boxes of chocolates and roses fill the entrance to grocery and retail stores this month. It’s a reminder to celebrate Valentine’s Day and share a little love. Love is defined differently depending on who you ask. It’s about romance for some, commitment for others, or a feeling you have for someone special. The term love is used to describe one’s feeling for pizza, a good book, a pet or family member. When asked what love is, one

Kindergarten student thoughtfully responded, “Love is when you try to make someone feel good.” However it may be defined, love is a powerful motivator. In addition to motivating young men to work hard to provide for a family, for independent women to compromise their career path and new parents to return to their roots, love can motivate children to obey, to achieve in school, and to love others.

Parents and teachers are given the opportunity to train children in a manner that is rooted in love. Parenting (and teaching) styles vary, but studies show that children with parents who demonstrate love through support and encouragement (authoritative parenting style) are more likely to obey family rules and follow the model and values set by parents. Parental love motivates children to want to please their parents. Unlike the authoritarian parent who rules with an iron fist, or the permissive parent with low expectations and limited boundaries, children in a loving home, with authoritative parents, are more likely to meet the high expectations to succeed in school. This is also true for students in a classroom with a teacher who practices an authoritative approach, rather than an authoritarian or permissive one. Teachers who express love and offer support to their students are more effective teachers. Research reports that students who feel cared for by their teachers perform better in school and work hard to complete challenging tasks. Children respond positively when a teacher takes an interest in them and exercises patience in teaching. Love and kindness builds the relationship, bringing about a desire to satisfy the teacher.

Love is more than a feeling. Love is a practice. The Bible is replete with chapters devoted to defining love. A common passage read at weddings, 1 Corinthians Chapter 13 in the New Testament, is a meaningful description of what love is and what love is not. Love is patient, love is kind. Love does not provoke, is not arrogant, and does not hold grudges. Genuine love is sacrificial. It is putting the needs of others above your own. When instruction is rooted in love, children blossom and learn to love others. To consider each and every love “is” and “does not” read 1 Corinthians 13 online at: BibleGateWay.com For more information on Parenting Styles visit: www.LifeandLearning.net. Dr. Kira Wilson is the Director of Covenant Academy in Pinellas County and the founder of Life and Learning, an education blog for parents. With more than 35 years in Christian education, her passion is to encourage and equip teachers and parents to develop in children a love for learning and a genuine relationship with God. She cherishes family time with her husband, children, and two grandchildren.

with Jim Daly Q: Our resolution this year is to improve our communication as a (busy) family. Several weeks in, we’re doing better about keeping in touch by phone, text and email. But something still seems to be missing. Jim: Did you know spoken (or written) words account for only 7 percent of communication? The rest is conveyed through our body language, face, eyes and tone of voice. Think about that. When we communicate with our family members primarily through text messages and email, we’re losing more than 90 percent of our ability to connect on a meaningful level.

The first player thinks of a person or thing to be and says, “Who am I?” or “What am I?” Then everybody else takes turns asking questions and listening to the responses until someone comes up with the answer. Second, ask open-ended questions that require more than a “yes” or “no” answer. For example, “What’s been the best part of your week so far?” or, “What made it

lower-than-usual grade on a quiz — gets blown out of proportion in his mind. How can we help him?

The possibilities are endless, but the point is the same -- to prime the pump and get the waters of personal conversation flowing. Because without that, your connection as a family could easily wither away.

Danny Huerta, Vice President, Parenting and Youth: This is a fairly common response at this impressionable age, especially if a child has perfectionist tendencies (or is seeing that modeled by someone else in the household). The key factor is whether your son is interpreting his mistakes and failures as an indicator of his worth. Help him grasp the proper perspective by emphasizing three truths that he needs to hear from you as his parent.

HELPING YOUR CHILD GRASP THE PROPER FERSPECTIVE OF FAILURE

Thriving families share a common trait: They spend time together interacting faceto-face. But many families struggle to have meaningful discussions. If that sounds like your household, you might try some of these ideas to get your family members talking:

Q: I’m concerned about how our 8-yearold son reacts when he makes a mistake or struggles in school. Any little thing — dropping and breaking a glass, or a

First, get the ball rolling with a simple question game around the dinner table.

First, failing is an important part of life because it helps a person mature. If your child falls into the trap of thinking, “It’s my fault” or “I’m stupid,” help him see the situation from another point of view -- as an opportunity to grow. Celebrate his potential for learning. Model the idea that success builds on itself through learning the right ways to do things and practicing them consistently.

Second, failure is a gift to our “future self” (the person we become) because it reminds us there is always room to grow. Kids sometimes get stuck on the message “I always fail.” Help them learn to overcome mistakes by focusing on motivation, determination, perseverance and learned skills. These are great traits that can position your child to succeed along the road of life.

With a little guidance and encouragement from you, your child can learn to reframe his mistakes and turn them into opportunities for growth and connection.

this is motherhood

We build circles of women who love each other like family, because raising humans is beautiful and hard, and having each other to lean on is life-giving.

Finally, falling short helps us become humble and loving. Pride can be destructive in relationships, while humility opens up the potential for real and selfless love to shine. Emphasize to your son that his worth doesn’t depend on being perfect; you love him the same regardless. In turn, by learning to accept himself for who he is, he’s learning to love and accept others for who they are rather than by what they do.

JAN

CONTROLLING BEHAVIOR CAN DESTROY YOUR MARRIAGE Q: I’ve been married for about 3 1/2 years. I think my wife and I have a pretty good relationship, although she doesn’t always do things the way I’d like. When I try to talk about such things and make suggestions, she seems to close down. Is there a way to help her see my point of view, or am I missing something? Greg Smalley, Vice President, Family Ministries: Whether it’s the right sweetener for our coffee or keeping our home at a certain temperature, we all want our life to function in a way that suits us. And when something doesn’t work the way we like, we usually try to control it. Unfortunately, many people employ a similar strategy in their marriage. Controlling behavior can often occur because one spouse doesn’t feel loved and validated by the other. So they try to con-

trol their spouse’s actions to ensure they get the relationship they want. But taking charge over a spouse doesn’t foster connection and love; it destroys it because control erodes partnership and oneness, the very foundation of the marital relationship. Here is the hard truth: If you control your spouse, you’re in danger of losing your marriage. A spouse who feels controlled will eventually try to escape. That may be through an affair, a divorce, or, at the very least, the spouse may spend all their time with friends or in another part of the house.

Learn how to live before you learn how to make a living

The solution is to give up the role of “boss” and to begin cultivating a relationship of warmth and openness. That requires giveand-take, likely including some compromises. It may take the help of a counselor, but when a couple learns healthy ways to connect and become equals, a strong marriage is just over the horizon. If you need some help getting started and would like to talk to one of our staff counselors, call 1-855-771-HELP (4357) or visit our website listed above. The Most Romantic Gift — Keep a lifelong fascination with your spouse by Dr. Greg Smalley American couples spend billions each Valentine’s Day. Romantic cards, candy, flowers, candlelit dinners and even expensive jewelry — are these what true romance is all about? I’m not knocking such gestures, and this year I’ll likely buy some items on that list. But these things are mere romantic tokens. Gifts and dinner dates can enhance romance, but they do not define romance. Some couples fail to understand its essence and have instead replaced the heart of romance with symbolic tokens and obligatory outings.

thoughts, beliefs, opinions, fears, desires, needs, hopes and dreams. However, after we’d been married for a few years, we encountered a romance buster – we became accustomed to each other. We gradually stopped asking questions and started believing that we knew everything there was to know about each other.

Proverbs 5:18-19 aptly describes the heart of romance: “Rejoice in the wife of your youth….May you always be captivated by her love”. True romance is more about being captivated by your spouse than buying flowers or chocolate. Captivation is all about curiosity and interest – being allured by your spouse.

Q: What’s the biggest difference between today’s media environment and what the previous generation experienced? A. Without question, the most impactful change has been how easily young boys and girls can access pornography. When I was a teen, porn was available primarily via magazines and XXX bookstores. Nowdays, pornography is just a click away.

Shine

Researchers report that 9 out of 10 boys and 6 out of 10 girls are exposed to pornography as teens. (For boys, the average age of first exposure is 12.) Plus, we’ve all heard about middle and high school students sexting risqué or nude photos of themselves or others – becoming not just consumers, but providers. So, what’s the answer? The first step, as difficult as it may seem, is for parents to have a chat with their children on the subject. Ask if they’ve intentionally accessed porn. Accidentally? What about their friends? Discuss what it means to live a porn-free life, including saying no to inappropriate movies and TV shows. Be sure your children know they can be honest without fear of reprisal and that you’ll be there to help no matter what. If you need further guidance, you can talk to one of Focus on the Family’s licensed counselors at 855-771-HELP (4357). We love to hear what our readers have to say! Check out these recent comments from some readers of Gulf Coast Family.

Gulf Coast Family we want to thank you for the special feature you did on the Star Wars exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts. We had family visiting from Boston this month and we were not sure what to do when they were in town. We picked up your paper at Chick-fil-a, read the Trips on a Tank article and we knew exactly what we were going to do. Our family (who are all avid Star Wars fans) absolutely LOVED the Art of the Costume exhibit and it was all they talked about when they were here. It was a great experience and the Museum of Fine Arts was also amazing. We have lived in the area for over ten years and have never been before. But we will definitely be going back!! – Carol Davis

If you have a story idea, feedback or question, please email us at articles@gulfcoastfamily.org. Gulf Coast Family I thought it important to take a moment to write and tell you my story. Every Monday through Saturday, my husband and I take care of four of our grandkids. Since we discovered your paper, we have been doing your Kid’s in the Kitchen recipes and your It’s Great to Create crafts each month. They really have been a lot of fun. Our grandkids love doing them and it has given us a way to connect with our grandkids. So thank you! By the way, our favorites were the Peanut Butter Bumble Bees, even though ours looked more like Peanut Butter caterpillars. Keep the ideas coming and we will send you some pictures. – Joyce Phillips

As a single working mom with three kids under the age of 12, I want to give a shout out to your publication and all the great restaurant coupons you have! Cooking dinner at home is difficult so we eat out – a lot. When we found your paper, we discovered the coupons for PDQ and Sonny’s. We had never eaten at a PDQ before but we have now and we love it. Thanks for the great coupons and for your amazing paper!! – Heather Cooper
