mention it always falls on the weekend closest to his birthday? But he is a very good sport. This month, Hanna, Haylee and I will be participating in our 5th Princess weekend. Ten-year-old Haylee takes her running fairly seriously. She is going to be running her second 10K, and although she’s not fast enough to set any records, she has been training pretty faithfully.
Parent to Parent Ever since my daughters and I discovered Disney races, my husband has had the distinct pleasure of spending his birthday weekend at Walt Disney World at the same time as the entire resort is overrun by thousands and thousands of “princesses” for the Princess Half Marathon weekend. Sometimes, he even runs the 5K with us, but usually, he is just a spectator, photographer, and chauffeur. Did I
Fourteen-year-old Hanna, on the other hand, primarily likes to run Disney races because they have really cool medals. And since the Half Marathon has the best medal, and she is now old enough to participate, that’s what she will be running (on her dad’s actual birthday). Like Haylee, she too has been training, but unlike Haylee, she takes the “walk breaks” far more seriously than she does her actual running. She likes to run for about 30 seconds at a time before taking a 30 second (or longer) walk break. So at that pace, her training runs take a very long time! Thankfully Disney has a pretty generous time limit, so she won’t have any problem getting her coveted medal, but I have a feeling that if you throw in a bathroom break or two (she takes at least two during a long run) and a picture in front of the castle, it’s going to take us most of that three and a half hour time limit.
And my lucky husband gets to wake up early to come out and cheer for us on his birthday. He’ll definitely be there on Main Street in the Magic Kingdom (about halfway through the race) and at the finish line to cheer, take pictures, and drive us back to our hotel. I’m sure there is nothing he would rather be doing that morning! Until next time,

The Regions Riding Forward Scholarship Essay Contest is based on the submission of a competitive essay about an inspirational African-American. Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and if you’re on the hunt for some cute party decor, these sweet crafts are sure to win guests’ hearts.
Valentine’s Day Candy Centerpiece Items Needed: • 2–3 bags of conversation heart candies • Ribbon • Styrofoam ball • Wood dowel and base • Tin pot • Glue gun Cut a piece of styrofoam to fit in the bottom of your bucket. Make sure it’s nice and snug. Wrap your wood dowel in the cute ribbon and glue it at each end. Tie a little bow on and glue to keep in place. One by one, add a dot of hot glue on the back of each conversation heart and attach to styrofoam ball. Work your way around the ball, piecing the hearts together as puzzle. Carefully poke one end of the dowel into your candy heart ball. Then, do the same at the base. Cover the base styrofoam with the left over candy and you are finished!
Romantic Candles Items Needed: • Pillar candles • Decorative scrapbook paper • Scissors and tape • Red card stock paper • String Cut the decorative scrapbook paper to wrap around the candle and attach with tape. Cut out heart shape from the red card stock. Attach heart to the string and tie around the candle and that’s it!
Decorative Letters Items Needed: • Wooden letters (for any • Glitter expression you want) • Hot glue gun • Red paint and paint brush aint your letter red, applying two coats. On the second P coat, while the paint is still wet, sprinkle glitter all over it. Tap the glitter off and let dry. Once dry, you can glue the letters together and you’re done!

One of your biggest priorities was making things about her. The restaurant, the date night activity, the clothes or cologne you wore, the doors you opened for her. You made it about her. In the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, Derek Redmond believed he could win a silver medal for Great Britain. After five years of daily training and eight operations on his Achilles tendons, Derek had won the first two heats and was running in the semifinals of the 400 meters. Things were going as planned until, coming out of the first turn, he heard a snap and felt a sharp pain in his left leg. Derek went down in a heap on the track as he realized that his left hamstring had exploded, and with it, his dreams of an Olympic medal. He got to his feet and began to run—hop, really—to finish the race. He later said that he was determined to finish and therefore waved off the race officials, who were running toward him with a stretcher. And then he felt a hand on his shoulder.
Redmond began to push the hand of assistance away until he turned to find himself looking into the face of his father, Jim. When Jim Redmond had seen what had happened to his son, he had pushed his way out of the crowd and onto the track and rushed to tell Derek that he didn’t have to finish. But when Derek insisted that he complete the race, Jim said they would do it together.

Bornean Orangutan Born at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo New year, new zoo baby! Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo welcomes 2018 with the birth of a rare Bornean orangutan baby. The endangered primate was born in the early morning on Jan. 6, 2018, to experienced mother Dee Dee, weighing in at an estimated 3 pounds. There are fewer than 100 Bornean orangutans in 24 AZA-accredited institutions in North America, making this birth very significant for the species and the Tampa community. Dee Dee is quite the experienced mother, already giving birth four times successfully and this will be

The Zoo’s animal care team and veterinary staff worked closely with Dee Dee to voluntarily participate during ultrasounds. “Dee Dee continues to do well with her female baby. As an experienced mother, she didn’t show any signs of any possible issues. We determined that Dee Dee’s baby had turned during one of her regular ultrasound exams,” said Dr. Ray Ball, VP of Medical Sciences at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo.
“Careful monitoring and pre-natal care are important, but so is privacy. With veterinary medicine, the baby determines the day of birth, but the mom determines the time. With no signs of a high risk pregnancy, we let her take care of the labor naturally— she determined when it would be time to deliver her baby.” The Zoo is currently home to a group of seven endangered orangutans and participates in the Bornean Orangutan Species Survival Plan (SSP). The program of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) protects

Why Is It So Important to Wear Retainers After Orthodontic Treatment? by Dr. Nick Reynolds, Northeast Orthodontics “Really? My kid has to wear the retainer every night for the rest of their life? When I had braces, my orthodontist told me to wear it for just a couple years and then stop.” This is a very common comment we hear from curious parents when discussing the importance of wearing retainers after orthodontic treatment is completed. Where the misconception came from, we really aren’t quite sure. The evidence has been in the literature for decades about treatment relapse being predictable in both amount and timing. Nonetheless, the same surprised expression on parents’ faces are seen weekly when we deliver the news that we recommend night time wear, or as we call it, “nighttime for a lifetime” of the retainers after braces come off. For those of you wondering what exactly a retainer is and what it does, I will digress
and fill you in! The point of braces is to take your teeth from the natural position your body wants them in, to a position of a perfect bite and a handsome or beautiful smile. Once braces come off, we like to describe the teeth as being in “wet cement”. The bone and gum tissue around each and every tooth is immature. If left alone, your body will immediately fight to put the teeth back into the “natural” position they were before you ever had braces. The reality is, you have natural orthodontic forces in your mouth twentyfour hours a day. Your teeth’s position are a result of cheek pressure, tongue pressure and chewing forces. Braces did a great job overpowering those forces and putting the teeth in their perfect position, and retainers are your insurance policy of keeping them there. The retainers themselves are typically made of plastic, or acrylic, and they fit over the teeth to keep them placed in the proper position. Ev-
ery patient has unique teeth, and unique treatment circumstances, so we prescribe and tailor make the retainers for each individual patient. Our office has a protocol of requesting you wear your retainers full time (twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week) for the first month after the braces come off, and then we will taper the number of hours down to nighttime only wear (approximately eight to ten hours) by month three. We find that starting full time and tapering down the number of hours increases the chance of the patient’s compliance with following the protocol long term and minimizes the pressure and soreness of wearing the retainers much quicker. Additionally, we also offer a bonded wire retainer behind the lower front teeth, if requested. We are very proud of our treatments, and want you to

Not budgeting for everything

One taste and you are sure to agree that this ultra creamy, extra rich cheesecake is not only very easy to make, but also very delicious. Studded with mini chocolate chips and baked in a sweet Oreo Cookie crust, this dessert is perfect for any Valentine’s celebration.
Chocolate Chip Cheesecake
• 20 cream filled chocolate • 3 8-ounce packages cream cheese sandwich cookies • 1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk • ¼ cup butter, melted • 3 eggs
• 2 teaspoons vanilla extract • 1 cup miniature chocolate chips • 1 teaspoon flour
1. Process cookies in a food processor to make crumbs. Add butter to crumbs and press into bottom of a 9-inch springform pan. Set aside. 2. Beat cream cheese until smooth. Add sweetened condensed milk and mix well. Add vanilla and eggs, and beat on medium speed until smooth. 3. Toss 1/3 cup of the chocolate chips with flour to coat. Add to cream cheese mixture and beat just until combined. 4. Pour cream cheese mixture into prepared crust. Sprinkle remaining 2/3 cup chocolate chips on top. 5. Bake at 300 degrees for 1 hour. Turn oven off and leave the cake in the oven to cool for another hour. Remove from oven and refrigerate for 1 to 2 hours before serving.

If there’s one event that brings people together, it’s the Olympics! And we are eagerly looking forward to the 2018 Winter Olympics which will be held this February. The 23rd Olympic Winter Games will officially begin on February 8th and we’re ready to give our colder sports some love. So, get ready to light a torch and set out for gold, because the Games are getting ready to begin!
Here are 25 things to know about this year’s games:

The 2018 PyeongChang Olympics run Feb. 9-25, officially. But competition actually starts a day earlier on the 8th.

This year’s games include six new events: snowboard big air (men’s and women’s), speed skating mass start (men’s and women’s), curling mixed doubles and the Alpine team event.

The gold medals weigh 586 grams, which would mean they’d be worth nearly $25,000 each if they were made of pure gold. However, they’re not. They’re made of silver and plated with six grams of gold. Instead of flowers during their podium ceremony, medalists will be given a small Games mascot — a stuffed white tiger named Soohorang — wearing a gold, silver or bronze hat and wooden gift featuring mountain scenes of PyeongChang. Closing ceremonies will be on Sunday, February 25.

On the final day of the last two Winter Olympics, there wasn’t a single women’s medal event. This time, there are an equal number of men’s and women’s events.

The PyeongChang Olympic Emblem symbolizes harmony. It comprises five colors, namely, yellow, green, blue, red and black. The colors are based on the motif of the Olympic ring and Korea’s five cardinal colors.

Math Success Begins With Algebra Judy Adorno, Director, Sylvan of St. Petersburg In today’s society, everyone, not just those who are mathematically inclined, must understand algebraic concepts and be able to work with technology. Changes in society and new expectations of colleges and employers have revolutionized math curriculums. Success in algebra often correlates to success in college, so it is very important for today’s students to do their best with this critical subject. Parents can sometimes feel intimidated because they lack experience with updated math teaching and technology. What practical steps can be taken to ease parental concerns and help families build confidence in this new approach to middle and high school mathematics?
What Parents Need to Know
Students who take advanced mathematics courses during high school, and begin to study algebra during middle school, are at an advantage. Traditionally, students cannot take a higher-level mathematics class

Sara Carroll Klug, a teacher of exceptional students at Morgan Fitzgerald Middle School, has been selected to receive the 2018 Clarissa Hug Teacher of the Year Award from the Council for Exceptional Children. Klug has taught at Morgan Fitzgerald Middle for 36 years. An announcement from the Council for Exceptional Children highlighted some of the many reasons Klug was selected for this honor: She implements lessons and interventions that are research based and data driven, while providing regular feedback on student work and behavior. She provides a supportive environment and instills rituals to guide students through their day. Her classroom includes a ticket reward system that allows students to become eligible for small prizes, a weekly rotation of students into the role of co-teacher, and hands-on activities such as a class butter-making project intended to bring a reading assignment to life.

Red and pink hearts are everywhere. Boxes of chocolates and roses fill the entrance to grocery and retail stores this month. It’s a reminder to celebrate Valentine’s Day and share a little love. Love is defined differently depending on who you ask. It’s about romance for some, commitment for others, or a feeling you have for someone special. The term love is used to describe one’s feeling for pizza, a good book, a pet or family member. When asked what love is, one
Kindergarten student thoughtfully responded, “Love is when you try to make someone feel good.” However it may be defined, love is a powerful motivator. In addition to motivating young men to work hard to provide for a family, for independent women to compromise their career path and new parents to return to their roots, love can motivate children to obey, to achieve in school, and to love others.
Parents and teachers are given the opportunity to train children in a manner that is rooted in love. Parenting (and teaching) styles vary, but studies show that children with parents who demonstrate love through support and encouragement (authoritative parenting style) are more likely to obey family rules and follow the model and values set by parents. Parental love motivates children to want to please their parents. Unlike the authoritarian parent who rules with an iron fist, or the permissive parent with low expectations and limited boundaries, children in a loving home, with authoritative parents, are more likely to meet the high expectations to succeed in school. This is also true for students in a classroom with a teacher who practices an authoritative approach, rather than an authoritarian or permissive one. Teachers who express love and offer support to their students are more effective teachers. Research reports that students who feel cared for by their teachers perform better in school and work hard to complete challenging tasks. Children respond positively when a teacher takes an interest in them and exercises patience in teaching. Love and kindness builds the relationship, bringing about a desire to satisfy the teacher.

with Jim Daly Q: Our resolution this year is to improve our communication as a (busy) family. Several weeks in, we’re doing better about keeping in touch by phone, text and email. But something still seems to be missing. Jim: Did you know spoken (or written) words account for only 7 percent of communication? The rest is conveyed through our body language, face, eyes and tone of voice. Think about that. When we communicate with our family members primarily through text messages and email, we’re losing more than 90 percent of our ability to connect on a meaningful level.
The first player thinks of a person or thing to be and says, “Who am I?” or “What am I?” Then everybody else takes turns asking questions and listening to the responses until someone comes up with the answer. Second, ask open-ended questions that require more than a “yes” or “no” answer. For example, “What’s been the best part of your week so far?” or, “What made it

CONTROLLING BEHAVIOR CAN DESTROY YOUR MARRIAGE Q: I’ve been married for about 3 1/2 years. I think my wife and I have a pretty good relationship, although she doesn’t always do things the way I’d like. When I try to talk about such things and make suggestions, she seems to close down. Is there a way to help her see my point of view, or am I missing something? Greg Smalley, Vice President, Family Ministries: Whether it’s the right sweetener for our coffee or keeping our home at a certain temperature, we all want our life to function in a way that suits us. And when something doesn’t work the way we like, we usually try to control it. Unfortunately, many people employ a similar strategy in their marriage. Controlling behavior can often occur because one spouse doesn’t feel loved and validated by the other. So they try to con-
trol their spouse’s actions to ensure they get the relationship they want. But taking charge over a spouse doesn’t foster connection and love; it destroys it because control erodes partnership and oneness, the very foundation of the marital relationship. Here is the hard truth: If you control your spouse, you’re in danger of losing your marriage. A spouse who feels controlled will eventually try to escape. That may be through an affair, a divorce, or, at the very least, the spouse may spend all their time with friends or in another part of the house.

Romantic cards, candy, flowers, candlelit dinners and even expensive jewelry — are these what true romance is all about? I’m not knocking such gestures, and this year I’ll likely buy some items on that list. But these things are mere romantic tokens. Gifts and dinner dates can enhance romance, but they do not define romance. Q: What’s the biggest difference between today’s media environment and what the previous generation experienced? A. Without question, the most impactful change has been how easily young boys and girls can access pornography. When I was a teen, porn was available primarily via magazines and XXX bookstores. Nowdays, pornography is just a click away.

Researchers report that 9 out of 10 boys and 6 out of 10 girls are exposed to pornography as teens. (For boys, the average age of first exposure is 12.) Plus, we’ve all heard about middle and high school students sexting risqué or nude photos of themselves or others – becoming not just consumers, but providers. So, what’s the answer? The first step, as difficult as it may seem, is for parents to have a chat with their children on the subject. Ask if they’ve intentionally accessed porn. Accidentally? What about their friends? Discuss what it means to live a porn-free life, including saying no to inappropriate movies and TV shows. Be sure your children know they can be honest without fear of reprisal and that you’ll be there to help no matter what.
