MY GS FAQ Your Girl Scout experience just got even more amazing. Members can now take advantage of Volunteer Systems, a new system where parents, volunteers and members can manage their membership information; and troop leaders will have access to Girl Scout Volunteer Toolkit (VTK), an amazing new tool to help troop leaders spend more time where it counts—with their girls. Have questions? We’ve got you covered.
What is Volunteer Systems?
Volunteer Systems is a new registration system allowing new members to find a troop through the troop catalog, join Girl Scouts and sign up to volunteer with ease. Through Volunteer Systems, new and current members can access our Member Community where they can manage family, troop and personal Girl Scout registration information, select a new volunteer position, and renew their registration.
How do I log in?
You should have received an important email from gsusacustomercare@girlscouts.org that will allow you to set up a new profile. Make sure you choose an email that you check often. From our website, click on “My GS” in the upper right hand toolbar to get started. Once you’re set up, you can explore all that the new Member Community has to offer.
Will troop leaders be able to register new girls for their troops in the new registration system?
No, parents will only be able to register new girl members. Once girls have registered as members of a troop, leaders will be able to renew girls for the next membership year.
Where do I register for summer camps, trainings or events?
Register for trainings and events through our events calendar, and sign up for camp through the camp page on our website. Summer sleep-away camp registration begins on January 26 and 28, 2016 at 10:00 AM, and day and evening camp registration begins on February 10, 2016.
What is the Volunteer Toolkit/VTK?
The Volunteer Toolkit is an amazing new web app to help troop leaders plan a full year of meetings right from their computer or smartphone. When you log into VTK for the first time, you’ll have access to three full year plans, including one year of Girl Scout badges and a choice of two Girl Scout Journeys. These pre-made plans provide everything you need to get started. You’ll also set your meeting calendar to include locations, dates and times. New content can be added throughout the year. Customize activities, delete ones that your girls don’t want to do and replace them with new ones. If you lead several troops you can even easily switch back and forth between them!
Who can access the Volunteer Toolkit?
As a registered troop volunteer (K-5), you will have access to the new Volunteer Toolkit—a year of Girl Scout programming conveniently delivered to your computer, smart phone or tablet to help you and your girls plan meetings. Registered parents of girls in troops will also have “read-only” views of the My Troop (excluding contact info), Year Plan, Meeting Plan and Financial tabs. Although the badges and journey program materials for Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors are currently not loaded into the toolkit, girls and their advisors can leverage the “Customize Your Troop Year” plan, the troop finance tab, the contacts, and the communication abilities of the toolkit.

Highest Awards 2016 Highest Awards Deadline - March 15, 2016 March 15, 2016 at 5pm is the deadline to submit Gold Award Final Reports and Silver Trefoil Reports in order to be invited to the In Your Honor ceremony on May 14, 2016 and to be recognized in the 2016 Awards Yearbook. This is also the deadline for Silver Award Final Reports for girls who wish to be recognized in the 2016 Awards Yearbook. President’s Award and Gold Award Scholarship applications are due on March 15, 2016 as well. Gold Award Project Proposals Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital has transitioned to GoGold Online for girls to submit their Gold Award Project Proposals. Beginning January 1, girls must submit their proposal using the GoGold online application. All the updated information regarding the Gold Award process can be found on the Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital website, www.gscnc.org. Gold Award Centennial 2016 is the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouts’ highest award. Now called the Gold Award, it has gone by many names over the past 100 years including the Golden Eagle of Merit, the Golden Eaglet, Curved Bar and First Class. We are gearing up for a year of celebrating the Gold Award and girls’ leadership. We are looking forward to girls earning the Gold Award during the centennial of Girl Scouts’ highest award. For more information on upcoming Gold Award events, please follow the Teen and Earned Awards Rally on Rallyhood. Silver Award Girls who are looking to earn the Silver Award must utilize the Silver Award Online Approval Tool which can be found on our website by clicking on About, Our Program and Highest Awards. Girls must complete the Online Approval Tool prior to moving forward with their projects. This approval page must be attached to their Silver Award final reports, which are submitted to the shop when adult volunteers purchase Silver Award pins. New Forms! All Highest Awards forms are up to date and available on our website by clicking on About, Our Program and Highest Awards. Program News Spotlight Congressional Aide Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors of Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital are invited to apply to participate in COngressional Aide, a week-long shadowing program in House and Senate offices. This is a unique opportunity to understand the legislative process and gain first-hand experience on Capitol Hill.

Last summer, 63 Girl Scouts walked through the halls of Congress shadowing Congressional members from as far away as the Northern Marianas Islands and as close to home as the District of Columbia. The application is now available on our website, gscnc.org, under Forms. The deadline to submit a hard copy to our DC office is March 1, 2016 at 5:00 pm. Girl Scout DC Step Showcase The DC Step Showcase is just around the corner! Join us Saturday, February 27 at Trinity Washington University in Washington, DC. This Nation’s Capital signature event brings together Girl Scouts, friends, family members and the community for an exciting celebration of Girl Scouts and creative performance. Troops of all ages create their own unique routines and perform them at the show. Want to support the step teams by cheering them on? This community celebration is free to all, so come out and enjoy a festive day of fun and dance.Just before the show, a free activity fair will be set up with crafts, games and interactive exhibits from Council program partners. Step is a form of dance in which the performers – usually as a group – use their entire bodies as an instrument to produce complex rhythms and sounds through a mixture of footsteps, spoken word, and hand claps. Please Note: There is no registration for spectators. Entry is first come, first served until capacity is reached.

Program Kits Did you know that Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital offers materials that can be borrowed to support your Girl Scout experience? Program Kits are available at no cost to leaders. Kits are fun, ageappropriate resources and are available for varied subjects such as STEM, Journeys, the environment, teamwork and healthy living. Leaders can use them during troop meetings and as stations at larger events such as encampments. Through a partnership with the United States Forest Service, we are adding Journey Kits for check-out as well as updating the Naturalist Kits. Program News Spotlight Booz Allen Hamilton’s Make the Connection Celebrating 10 years of programming and mentorship! Since 2006, thousands of local girls have benefited from Make the Connection, a partnership between Booz Allen Hamilton and Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital. Make the Connection is an innovative mentorship program that pairs Booz Allen Hamilton employees with Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors in a series of workshops where girls explore their skills, aptitudes and interests with some of the region’s best and brightest corporate leaders. In addition to Make the Connection, which serves girls in grades 6-12, the Make the Connection Jr. program for Girl Scout Juniors in grades 4-5 will continue. At Make the Connection Jr., girls will work side by side with Booz Allen employees to learn more about STEM careers while engaging in hands-on STEM activities. Because girls’ confidence and interest in STEM begins to decline between 4th and 6th grade, this program is designed to show girls all of the opportunities STEM can offer. This year, Make the Connection will be celebrating 10 fantastic years of programming and mentorship. We invite all Make the Connection alumni to attend our 10 year celebration and networking event on Sunday, January 10, 2016. The event will be held at Booz Allen Headquarters in McLean, VA. Journey Leadership Weekend Girl Scouts Naiton’s Capital is pleased to offer a Breathe! Girl Scout Cadette Journey Leadership Weekend. Girls will work together to learn how to improve the air quality in the world while developing leadership skills. The activities completed will help girls earn the Aware Award. After participating, girls will be ready to start their Take Action Projects to complete the Journey, and start working on the Silver Award. When: April 2-3, 2016 Where: Camp Coles Trip–Stafford, VA Who: Registered girls in grades 6-8 Registration: Opens January 13, 2016 Cost: $35 per person* *Includes 2 meals, a snack and materials. Financial assistance available upon request. Troops can reserve a glen shelter through the Program Services Department. If you choose to camp, you must provide your own Camp Certified and First Aid Certified Adults. GEICO Art of Independence Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital and GEICO’s Art of Independence program will empower Girl Scouts to discover skills that will prepare them for a positive, healthy and independent future by earning a life-skills badge.
There are two ways to participate: 1. Earn a practical life-skills badge at your level with your troop. Let us know which
badge you earned by July 2016 by filling out a survey at http://bit.ly/1Yf9DpR and we will send you a FREE GEICO patch while patch supplies last!
2. Attend one of four Art of Independence events hosted by Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital. They will be advertised on the Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital website and our publications as they are scheduled. For more information, go to www.gscnc.org, in the About section, under Our Programs. The Life Skill Badges are:
My Great Day – The My Great Day badge teaches Girl Scout Brownies that life is more fun when it’s running smoothly and encourages them to be organized – so there’s more time to play!
Babysitter – The Babysitter badge teaches Girl Scout Cadettes how to be well-prepared, responsible and effective babysitters. Girls learn about how kids develop, how to focus on play, how to find employers and what to do when challenges arise.
Independence – The Independence badge encourages Girl Scout Juniors to start taking care of themselves, learn their capabilities and show their families they are learning how to be responsible. Topics include: transportation, breaking bad habits, taking care of clothes and helping around the house.
Car Care – By fulfilling the requirements for the Car Care badge, Girl Scout Seniors learn basic car care maintenance, vehicle safety, safe driving practices, what to do in an emergency and how to drive for a greener world.
Capital One Financial Fitness Challenge The Capital One Financial Fitness Challenge is back! This year we’re challenging all 164 Service Units to become financially literate using Girl Scouts’ new national financial literacy curriculum and Capital One-branded supplemental education materials, resources and events. Program News Spotlight Girl Scout Day at the Newseum The Newseum is thrilled to welcome Girl Scouts to a special day of events created just for them. When: Saturday, March 5, 2016 Time: 9:00 am-5:00 pm Where: Newseum, 555 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington, D.C. Cost: Discounted $11 admission tickets when booked through a troop. Girl Scout Day at Hillwood Celebrate spring with your sister Girl Scouts during a fun-filled and festive day at Hillwood on Saturday, April 16, 2016 from 10:00 am-1:00 pm. Girls will earn healthy living and manners themed badges while participating in activities related to the gracious and healthy lifestyle of Marjorie Post, who once lived at Hillwood. Activities include lawn games popular in Post’s time, such as badminton, croquet, hula hoop, and jump rope. Girls are also invited to putt on the Putting Green just as Post and her guests used to do, and a certified health education specialist will provide tips for staying healthy and lead yoga sessions in the gardens. For more hands-on fun, girls can try on costumes from a collection of hero capes, royal crowns, knight shields, and more to explore a variety of fashions, styles and modes of personal expression. They will also create works of art, including self-portraits and fancy placemats inspired by Hillwood’s art collections. Girls can complete activities to earn the Lupe and Gloria Daisy petals, Making Friends and My Best Self Brownie badges, Social Butterfly and Staying Fit Junior badges, and the Science of Happiness Cadette badge. Girl Scout Day at Udvar-Hazy In conjunction with the Women’s History Month Family Day, Girl Scouts are invited to attend this free event at the Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA on March 13, 2016 from 10:00 am-3:00 pm. A History of Gold Award Award table will be featured along with hundreds of other exhibits. Patches will be available to the first 300 Girl Scouts in uniform. This is a free event and open to the public. Parking is $20.
