What’s That Mean? We’ve got a lot of lingo in Girl Scouts! Here’s a cheat sheet for some of the most common terms and abbreviations used in Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland. GSLE—Girl Scout Leadership Experience. A combination of activities, discussions, projects, and experiences that engages and empowers girls to discover, connect, and take action. GSMH—Abbreviation for “Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland.” SWAPs—Special Whatchamacallits Affectionately Pinned Somewhere or Share With a Pal. Often made and traded between Girl Scouts at events. Generally follow the event theme or representing the maker’s interests. Tagalong—A non-registered child attending a Girl Scout event. For insurance purposes and to ensure that girls receive the best possible service and experience, these are generally not permitted at GSMH program events.

LLS— Leadership and Learning Specialist. New titles for GSMH staff in summer 2012, each of our three geographic regions has one LLS-GSLE, who facilities program events and advises the different Girl Scout pathways, and one LLS-Volunteerism, who coordinates volunteer trainings and support. We also have one LLS-Outdoor Programs who oversees our summer and day camp programs. MMS—Membership Marketing Specialist. Responsible for marketing the Girl Scout Leadership Experience locally, this person is also a primary staff contact for troop volunteers. Region—Three geographic areas within GSMH—southwest (Springfield/Joplin areas, KS, OK), central (Jefferson City area), and southeast (Dexter/Cape Girardeau areas). STM— Service Team Manager. An adult volunteer who supports a service unit (see below). SU— Service Unit. Geographic area—usually by county—of Girl Scout troops and members.
