Ball Tribute Book 2012

Page 1

We’re Rolling Out the Red Carpet For You! This last year has certainly been a whirlwind of activity starting with the Chamber’s 100th Birthday BASH kick-off, followed by the 100th Celebration Ball. It feels as if we never got off that celebratory train as we launched new programs and events to commemorate 100 years of Valley business. And it all culminates tonight at the Chamber’s 100th Inaugural Ball – a night to pay tribute to our members and their achievements, and celebrate another great year in the Greater San Fernando Valley Chamber’s 101 year history. What better place to celebrate our achievements and honor our shining stars than with a red carpet party at the world famous Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, home of the first Academy Awards? Tonight we’re paying tribute to our leading man - retiring Board Chair Bert Seneca - and welcoming 2012-2013 Board Chair Barry Leonard – both have played starring roles as board chairs before – hence our theme name Take Two. Our honorees have also given Oscar-winning performances and the spotlights on the stage tonight as we bestow VICA, Van Nuys Airport, Mary Helwig, Asher Levin, and Mark Levinson with the Excellence Awards. Here’s to another 100 Years of Business. Take Two… Action!

Cut...TAKE TWO...Action! In any movie production, the leading actor is only as good as his or her supporting cast. As I conclude my second term as Board Chairman, there is no doubt that I had and our Chamber has the perfect cast for a continuing sequel. I was very humbled to once again be chosen as the Chairman of the Board to herald us through the 100th year of our organization.

Community Award of Excellence Van Nuys Airport

Volunteer of the Year

Our Chamber is award-winning, and this is very evident by the gathering tonight of such a distinguished group of people. Thank you for joining us as we reflect on some of our past year’s achievements. First, we felt it appropriate to recognize one of the key elements that make our Chamber great – Volunteerism - so we have created a new program, the Salute to Volunteerism. In addition, we received our second core competency/ program of the year award –this time for the Latino Expo, our 3rd President’s Circle Award and will receive our 4th tonight; and to no one’s surprise, Nancy received the Pettit Award, a lifetime achievement award given to a chamber professional for their contributions to the chamber profession - our Chamber now can boast three of the 41 Pettit winners.

Bert Seneca Board Chairman 2011-2012 2003-2004

Taking advantage of changing technology, we expanded our use of Social Media and our Facebook page likes have grown and has helped us promote our programs and events.

To revitalize our Government Affairs Committee, we partnered with another successful organization, VICA. This partnership has proved to be very valuable as we just had our largest delegation travel to the annual Sacramento Legislative Trip. And because of this partnership I am very proud to honor them with the Chairman’s Award of Excellence. I am proud to report that in our 100th year, we’ve seen more members than ever be involved on committees and at events. Our attendance at the Network Connection Breakfast is around 100 people every month, our committees have grown by so many new members and if you look at our award winners these past few years, they are from the new members that have become involved. It was this involvement that inspired me to add the Volunteer of the Year award because without them, this organization would not exist. In closing, I want to thank each of you for allowing me this privilege and with Dr. Leonard now in the leading role, the sequel is sure to be a blockbuster.

Hooray For Chamberhood!

I have to be honest; I didn’t know what I was going to write for tonight’s program book. Rarely am I at a loss for words. This is a big year for me… my 25th Anniversary at the Chamber, and I didn’t know how I was going to sum up my thoughts and my feelings into a few short paragraphs.

Take Two, Rolling..

As it is, each year I write something and I often wonder if anyone is reading it… so if you’re reading this, give me a big thumbs up when I’m up on the stage! When I started at the Chamber in 1987, I never expected I would be here a quarter century later. Thankfully we’ve had several name changes, so I can say I changed chambers without ever having to actually move my office.

The first time I was board chair, I was locked in a room until I said “yes.” I’m not sure if I’ve mellowed over time or if I’ve learned that not arguing is easier, but when Bert asked me to serve as his chair-elect, I was honored to accept the position. No imprisonment necessary.

I’ve seen a lot in the last 25 years. First of all, the Ball is nothing like it was when I was involved with my first one in 1988. Back then, we were excited that our invitations were typed on an IBM Selectric typewriter and then mimeographed on a little Ditto machine we used to keep in the conference room. Our highlight that year was that we used pink paper. We had a one-man band, our ticket price was $35 per person, and we had limited our sponsorships to 10 sponsors at $50 each. The next year, past president Joe DiFatta donated beautifully printed invitations, our highlight was twinkle lights in the centerpieces, and we still had a one-man band. Things have certainly changed since then… we’re producing our own movies, have a seven piece band, and holding the Ball at some of the most sought-after venues in the Southland. What used to be a ho-hum event, has turned into one of the Chamber’s signature pieces.

Nancy Hoffman Vanyek Chief Executive Officer

In 25 years I’ve seen two recessions, the loss of the aerospace industry in the Valley; the Air Guard moving out of Van Nuys; other major businesses shutting down operations or moving out of State; the Northridge Earthquake which stopped business temporarily in its tracks; a fire that burned down the Chamber office; and the loss of some of our most beloved leaders. But there is a light that overcomes all obstacles and continues to let us shine brightly and that is our members and their commitment to a successful and prosperous San Fernando Valley. It is their achievements, and their dedication and drive that propels us forward and allows us to stand out as the Valley’s premier business organization. Together we can achieve more. Congratulations to our honorees, and to Bert and Barry and our board for your leadership and commitment. It is because of all of you that I am proud to be part of the Greater San Fernando Valley Chamber and look forward to another 25 years of business success.

There is a reason I wanted to chair again… the Chamber has been around 101 years and during that time, we’ve seen our community evolve from farmland to a multi-cultural business area. And during that time, the Chamber has continued to step up to the challenge and meet the needs of the ever-changing community we serve. We’ve utilized social media more than ever these past two years and it has allowed us to reach audiences we didn’t have access to before and increase communication with our existing members. We have been able to promote members’ activities, applaud our members, and toot the horn of the Chamber.

Dr. Barry Leonard Board Chairman 2012-2013 2002-2003

I’m happy to see a younger generation of business people join the Chamber. They have elevated the energy of the Chamber programs, bringing fresh ideas and enthusiasm that are contagious to the entire membership. I hope to harness the vivacity of this group of future leaders. Great things lie ahead for the Greater San Fernando Valley Chamber of Commerce and I’m proud to be part of it.

Chairman’s Award of Excellence

Presented to Valley Industry & Commerce Association (VICA)

The Chairman’s Award of Distinction is selected solely by the Chamber’s Chairman of the Board to recognize an outstanding Chamber member for their ingenuity, teamwork, creativity, and contributions to the Greater San Fernando Valley Chamber’s success. As one of the most influential business advocacy organizations in Southern California, VICA’s access to public officials ensures that the San Fernando Valley’s business perspective will be heard in the interest of improving our business climate and quality of life in the area.

VICA and Chamber Visiting Sacramento On Annual Advocacy Trip

VICA’s partnership with the Chamber has provided much needed support to the Chamber’s small staff by assisting the organization on issues that affect our membership. Our partnership on regional issues such as Business License Tax Reform and Redistricting, as well as our joint trip to Sacramento, has helped strengthen the Chamber’s advocacy efforts. This regionally focused agenda allows us to rally around policy initiatives that have a direct impact on the region, and multiplies the efficacy and potency of the voice of San Fernando Valley business.

Chamber Award of Excellence

Presented to Law Office of Asher A. Levin

The Chamber Award of Excellence recognizes the one Member that has been “extra involved” — done the most to support the Chamber’s programs and projects in areas such as most volunteer hours, best support for different activities, etc. Asher Levin, Esq. has been in practice since 1976 and has developed a successful law firm with an emphasis on Estate Planning - Wills and Living Trusts, Probate, Conservatorships, Bankruptcy, Business Law, Trust and Probate Litigation, and Civil and Business Litigation. Representing small businesses, individuals, and corporations, their mission is to take a genuine interest in their clients, understand their objectives, and meet or exceed their expectations. Mr. Levin’s dedication to furthering the Chamber through his donation of invaluable legal services not only has saved the Chamber substantial money, but also is critically important to insuring the long-term financial health of the organization. The Chamber is fortunate to have wonderful members who give their time, energy, and talent to make the Chamber a successful organization. Asher A. Levin

Community Award of Excellence

Presented to Van Nuys Airport

The Community Award of Excellence recognizes the Chamber Member that has devoted time and energy to the community in a meaningful way and has been involved in programs and projects aimed at assisting the community-at-large. Van Nuys Airport, owned by Los Angeles World Airports, ranks as one of the world’s busiest general aviation airports. It contributes $1.3 billion to the local Valley economy and wants to be sure that they are responsible stewards to the Valley by giving back through participation in a large variety of community groups, schools and business organizations. This includes volunteering as a team to represent the Airport in their personal time, including the Chamber’s Clean Up Day in which they won the “Largest Team” award in 2011. This important Valley business truly goes above and beyond to make the Valley a better community to live, work, play & shop.

Committee Chairperson of the Year

Presented to Mary Helwig, Owner, Curves of Lake Balboa Fitness Center

Volunteer Of The Year

Presented to Mark L, Levinson, Attorney at Law

The Committee Chairperson of the Year Award recognizes members for their leadership, accomplishments, and successes.

The Committee Chairperson of the Year Award recognizes a Chamber member who has volunteered many hours of time, talent and energy to the success and growth of the Greater San Fernando Valley Chamber.

Mary Helwig, Owner of Curves of Lake Balboa Fitness Center, is the recipient of the Chamber’s 2012 Committee Chairperson of the Year Award. In her role as Chairperson of the Clean Up Day Committee, she was instrumental in successfully moving Clean Up Day outside the Van Nuys area for the first time in its 28 year history. This allowed the Chamber to serve the entire San Fernando Valley by cleaning a much traveled and loved portion of Limekiln Canyon. Mary went above and beyond her duties, giving up her time and resources to make sure that the event went off without a hitch. Her personal dedication to the event helped mobilize the committee, and helped increase neighborhood and community participation. Mary Helwig

Mark Levinson and his example of Chamber volunteerism is commitment at its best and truly embodies the Valley tradition of community service. He often says that when he decides to belong to an organization, he believes you should do everything you can to support it. By his efforts, Mark has made the Greater San Fernando Valley Chamber more effective in serving the San Fernando Valley region.

Mendenhall Memorial Award

Presented to Bert J. Seneca, The Beverly Garland

The late Walter Mendenhall, known for many years as the dean of San Fernando Valley publishers, established the Walter Mendenhall Man of the Year Award in 1941 and designated that it was to be presented annually to the person who gave most unselfishly of him or herself to make Van Nuys a better community. After his death, the award was continued by his widow and his son Ferdinand Mendenhall, editor and co-owner of the Van Nuys News. The award evolved into the Mendenhall Memorial Award in memory of both Walter and Ferdinand Mendenhall and presented to the Chamber’s retiring board chair for outstanding leadership qualities in directing the Chamber and its business and community activities during the year. Bert Seneca Board Chairman 2011-2012

Bert J. Seneca, the Chamber’s 2011-2012 board chair, will be presented with the Mendenhall Memorial Award. Mr. Seneca is recognized for his outstanding leadership, his vision to expand the Chamber, and for introducing new programs this past year. During his tenure, the Chamber launched a new event saluting the key volunteers of the Chamber’s nonprofit members; received the President’s Circle Award from the California Chamber of Commerce for the organization’s legislative advocacy; and recently received the Western Association of Chamber Executives Program of the Year Award for the Latino Expo.

CalChamber Presidents Circle Award The California Chamber of Commerce has recognized the Greater San Fernando Valley Chamber, along with 22 local chambers of commerce with the President’s Circle award. The award, first presented in 2009, recognizes chambers for excellence in business advocacy and helping their members comply with California employment laws. President’s Circle award recipients published vote records of their state legislators on key business issues, generated letters to state elected officials on issues of interest to members and participated in the CalChamber compliance product resale program at an exemplary level. In 2011, 21 chambers were presented with a President’s Circle award. In 2010, there were 22 award recipients, and in 2009, 13 local chambers received the award. The Greater San Fernando Valley Chamber of Commerce is one of ten chambers who have received the President’s Circle Award all four years the award has been presented.

In the Beginning.. One hundred years ago, a group of leaders gathered to promote business and industry in Van Nuys creating a new organization called the Van Nuys Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber’s first decade of presidents included only five men, most serving multiple terms: Sherman Otis Houghton (1912, 1915, 1916); L.L. Whitson (1913); Dr. M.N. Callender (1914); Frank M. Keffer (1917, 1918, 1939); and Bert R. Holloway (1919-21, 1928). The distinction of the Chamber’s first president goes to Sherman Otis Houghton, who purchased 160 acres of land on the outskirts of the current downtown Van Nuys area. Known as “The Asparagus King” of the San Fernando Valley, he had the largest piece of land dedicated solely to that one product. Among his various interests, Mr. Houghton was also a director of the old First National Bank of Van Nuys, and served as a member of the advisory board of the local California Bank. President in 1917, pioneer journalist of the San Fernando Valley, Frank M. Keffer, came to California in 1911 and established the Van Nuys News (now the Daily News), serving as editor and publisher of the newspaper for 21 years. He served a second term in 1918 and another term over 20 years later in 1939. He also served as secretary of the Chamber. Also notable in this early group was Bert R. Holloway, owner of the Holly Hatchery in Van Nuys, who took the reigns as Chamber president in 1919, a position he held for three consecutive years, and again in 1928. Holloway was the pioneer poultry man of the Valley, and his plant was noted far and wide for its size and high-class chicks it hatched. Few, if any other citizen of the San Fernando Valley, had so many interests of importance as Mr. Holloway, and his memberships in various fraternal and civic organizations are too numerous to mention. Other leading citizens that served as Chamber president in the early years,

include George E. Hume (1925); Russell Douglas La Vake (1934); Harry V. Platt (1929, 1932-33); and Bruce Allington (1930). While Allington was one of the first auto dealers in Van Nuys, the founding fathers and other leading citizens were some of the Valley’s first land owners and developers. Our early leadership continued to be the “movers and shakers” in the financial, real estate and publishing world. In the 40s and 50s, new leaders emerged from health care, service industries, and the burgeoning retail area that was emerging in Van Nuys. In the 1970s, the Van Nuys Chamber became the Greater Van Nuys Area Chamber to reflect the members who were from the surrounding communities. In 1989, the Panorama City/Sepulveda Chamber merged with the Greater Van Nuys Area Chamber, forming the Mid San Fernando Valley Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber’s new board reflected the change and, to this day, prominent Panorama City and North Hills (formerly Sepulveda) leaders hold seats on the Chamber’s board of directors. As businesses moved from the Van Nuys area to Warner Center, and other emerging areas of commerce, membership reflected the change and the organization’s representation expanded to each Valley community, and beyond to the Simi and Santa Clarita Valleys, as well as Los Angeles. To better reflect that the organization had grown from one that only represented Van Nuys businesses to one that encompassed the Valley’s 260 square miles, the Chamber became known as the Greater San Fernando Valley Chamber of Commerce. Since then, the Greater San Fernando Valley Chamber has forged alliances with other organizations, including unifying with the Reseda Chamber of Commerce in 2010, allowing the organization to increase its influence and continue to grow.
