In the Beginning for three consecutive years, and again in 1928. Holloway was the pioneer poultry man of the Valley, and his plant was noted far and wide for its size and high-class chicks it hatched. Few, if any other citizen of the San Fernando Valley, had so many interests of importance as Mr. Holloway, and his memberships in various fraternal and civic organizations are too numerous to mention. Other leading citizens that served as Chamber president in the early years, include George E. Hume (1925); Russell Douglas La Vake (1934); Harry V. Platt (1929, 1932-33); and Bruce Allington (1930). While Allington was one of the first auto dealers in Van Nuys, the founding fathers and other leading citizens were some of the Valley’s first land owners and developers.

One hundred years ago, a group of leaders gathered to promote business and industry in Van Nuys creating a new organization called the Van Nuys Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber’s first decade of presidents included only five men, most serving multiple terms: Sherman Otis Houghton (1912, 1915, 1916); L.L. Whitson (1913); Dr. M.N. Callender (1914); Frank M. Keffer (1917, 1918, 1939); and Bert R. Holloway (1919-21, 1928). The distinction of the Chamber’s first president goes to Sherman Otis Houghton, who purchased 160 acres of land on the outskirts of the current downtown Van Nuys area. Known as “The Asparagus King” of the San Fernando Valley, he had the largest piece of land dedicated solely to that one product. Among his various interests, Mr. Houghton was also a director of the old First National Bank of Van Nuys, and served as a member of the advisory board of the local California Bank. President in 1917, pioneer journalist of the San Fernando Valley, Frank M. Keffer, came to California in 1911 and established the Van Nuys News (now the Daily News), serving as editor and publisher of the newspaper for 21 years. He served a second term in 1918 and another term over 20 years later in 1939. He also served as secretary of the Chamber. Also notable in this early group was Bert R. Holloway, owner of the Holly Hatchery in Van Nuys, who took the reigns as Chamber president in 1919, a position he held 4

100th Anniversary

Our early leadership continued to be the “movers and shakers” in the financial, real estate and publishing world. In the 40s and 50s, new leaders emerged from health care, service industries, and the burgeoning retail area that was emerging in Van Nuys. In the 1970s, the Van Nuys Chamber became the Greater Van Nuys Area Chamber to reflect the members who were from the surrounding communities. In 1989, the Panorama City/Sepulveda Chamber merged with the Greater Van Nuys Area Chamber, forming the Mid San Fernando Valley Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber’s new board reflected the change and, to this day, prominent Panorama City and North Hills (formerly Sepulveda) leaders hold seats on the Chamber’s board of directors. As businesses moved from the Van Nuys area to Warner Center, and other emerging areas of commerce, membership reflected the change and the organization’s representation expanded to each Valley community, and beyond to the Simi and Santa Clarita Valleys, as well as Los Angeles. To better reflect that the organization had grown from one that only represented Van Nuys businesses to one that encompassed the Valley’s 260 square miles, the Chamber became known as the Greater San Fernando Valley Chamber of Commerce. Since then, the Greater San Fernando Valley Chamber has forged alliances with other organizations, including unifying with the Reseda Chamber of Commerce in 2010, allowing the organization to increase its influence and continue to grow.

Welcome to the San Fernando Valley – fondly known as “the Valley”— where blue skies keep watch 329 days of the year.

Welcome

From the world’s center for entertainment to the rich, cultural heritage of our ethnic neighborhoods, the Valley mingles small town charm with big city lifestyles.

Boasting beautiful weather conditions year-round, the Valley enjoys an average daily temperature of 77.5º F (25º C) making it ideal for outdoor enthusiasts.

The Valley has evolved from a collection of ranches and farms to an area of 40 bustling communities with a population of almost 1.8 million within its 260 square miles. It is our nation’s #1 retail market and home to small and family-owned businesses, as well as multi-national corporations and public companies.

If we had to choose a central hub for the Valley, it would most likely be Ventura Boulevard, a strip of highend restaurants and shops that stretches from Universal City to Thousand Oaks. Here you’ll find everything from diners and fast-food joints, boutique shopping to traditional clothing stores, grocery stores, coffee shops and lots of retail shopping.

The Valley has served as a backdrop for many Westerns and other television and film productions; provided a home base for businesses including the aerospace and entertainment industries; and has become a favorite location for many colleges, universities, and trade schools.

The Valley offers immense options for business and pleasure. If you’re looking for a place to live, work, play or shop, this directory is your guide.

If you have any additional questions about the Valley, please contact the Greater San Fernando Valley Chamber of Commerce at (818) 989-0300, www.sanfernandovalleychamber.com. 16

Demographics in the Valley The San Fernando Valley is a geographical area roughly bounded by the Santa Susana Mountains to the north and west, the Santa Monica Mountains to the south, and the San Gabriel Mountains to the east. It lies wholly within Los Angeles County and includes the cities of Burbank, Calabasas, Glendale, Hidden Hills, and San Fernando, as well as the Valley portion of the City of Los Angeles. This is roughly defined as the area north of Mulholland Dr. and west of

Barham Blvd. It comprises the largest part of the San Fernando Valley, accounting for approximately 80 percent of the Valley’s population and 77 percent of its land area. The Los Angeles portion of the Valley is better known by its array of “named communities.” At present, 27 “named” communities make up the Los Angeles portion of the Valley, including Universal City, home to Universal Studios Hollywood. None of these communities are legal entities;

all are part of Los Angeles. The power to name a particular area rests with the Los Angeles City Council, and they exercise that power, carving newly named communities out of existing ones. In recent years, three new areas have been carved out and named – West Hills, Valley Village and Valley Glen. The Valley portion also accounts for an important and sizable part of the City of Los Angeles with 47 percent of its land area and 37 percent of its population.

For many years, visitors and residents alike thought they needed a car to travel around the Valley and other parts of Los Angeles. With the introduction of urban rail, subways, and bus routes, this perception is beginning to change and is evident in the number of riders who now take mass transit for their business and pleasure travel.

Getting Around The most recent addition to our transit system is the innovative Orange Line that cuts across the Valley. This urban light rail system travels 14 miles between Warner Center and the North Hollywood Red Line subway station and is being extended four miles north from the Canoga Station to the Chatsworth Metrolink Station, offering improvements to north-south mobility in the western San Fernando Valley.

In addition, the Valley’s location provides access to major freeways, airports and train stations, allowing for more extensive travel throughout the United States. Bob Hope Airport, located in Burbank, is served by six major airlines and handles 4.6 million passengers annually. Affectionately known as “Burbank Airport,” it has two terminals and its Valley location is a wonderful alternative to LAX.

Open since 1928, Van Nuys Airport is the busiest general aviation airport in the world and home to private, chartered, and small commercial aircraft. It is one of four airports owned and operated by Los Angeles World Airports, including Los Angeles International, Ontario International and Palmdale Regional. Van Nuys Airport is also home to the Van Nuys FlyAway Bus service, which provides non-stop bus service from Van Nuys to Los Angeles International Airport. The FlyAway allows travelers to park their cars in Van Nuys and not have to deal with driving to LAX or parking fees at LAX. For your convenience, we have included contact numbers you can call to find out about freeway conditions, bus and train schedules, carpooling, etc.

The San Fernando Valley has come a long way since the beginning of the 20th Century when its fertile ground not only nourished the development of California’s citrus industry, but also the state’s then fledgling movie and aviation industries. Today, the Valley is the nation’s #1 retail market and is home to small business, family-owned business, as well as L.A.’s most popular public companies.

Here are just a few reasons to do business in the Valley: • It puts you in the midst of the aerospace, aviation, and enter tainment industries; think government contracts, large corporations. • It provides you with easy access to major freeways leading to other parts of Los Angeles and the state of California. • Its abundance of colleges, universities and trade schools offer businesses a pool of potential interns, employees, and customers. • You are part of a neighborhood that is loyal to its local businesses. 26

WORK

Doing Business in the Valley

If all this isn’t enough, you have the support of the Greater San Fernando Valley Chamber of Commerce. Since its formation in 1911 as the Van Nuys Chamber of Commerce, the Chamber has been “the force behind business” in the region. It recognized then, as it does now, that the Valley’s life-blood depends upon the health of its business economy. To help businesses achieve success, the Chamber provides a variety of resources, educational and informational programs, and advocacy at all levels of government. The Chamber has direct access to the “movers and shakers” in Los Angeles, the state of California, and on Capitol Hill. They have developed strategic partnerships and relationships with the Valley Economic Alliance (VEA), Valley Economic Development Center (VEDC), and Valley Industry & Commerce Association (VICA),

providing a unified voice for Valley business. These relationships also provide business owners with invaluable resources to improve and successfully operate their business, including access to business loans, webinars, seminars and workshops. The Chamber also offers members access to: • Businesses in the community, allowing networking and relationship building to take place. • SCORE, a program offered through the Small Business Administration to provide entrepreneurs with free, confidential face-to-face business counseling. • Updates on our State and local legislators’ voting records. • Business discounts from other members. • International trips.

From beautiful gardens to haunted mansions, the history of the San Fernando Valley is as rich as the soil it sits on. Here are just a few of our local landmarks that tell the story of our extraordinary past.

Landmarks CALABASAS Leonis Adobe Museum 23537 Calabasas Rd. (818) 222-6511 www.leonisadobemuseum.org Built in 1844, Leonis Adobe is one of the oldest surviving private residences in Los Angeles County and one of the oldest buildings in the San Fernando Valley. It was the home of Miguel Leonis, who was known as the “King of Calabasas.”

The museum features the authentically furnished two-story Monterey-style adobe with original buildings, period livestock, gardens and a vineyard—all recreated to portray how the ranch may have looked in its heyday. Restored, it is now operated as a living museum. The Adobe also has the

LEONIS ADOBE MUSEUM

distinction of being one of the most haunted sites in Los Angeles County. The British paranormal television series “Most Haunted” featured it in 2005.

Until it was moved to the Leonis Adobegrounds in 1983, the Plummer House stood in Plummer Park in West Hollywood, where it was known as the “Oldest House in Hollywood.” CANOGA PARK Shadow Ranch Albert Workman Residence 22633 Vanowen St. (818) 883-3637 www.laparks.org Capturing the heritage of the San Fernando Valley’s ranching and agricultural past, the once prosperous Shadow Ranch and its twostory house sits on 13 acres of what originally was a 4,000-acre working ranch containing some 70 barns. Local lore portends that in the 1870s, Ranch Superintendent Albert Workman imported eucalyptus seedlings from his native Australia and planted them at the ranch. Years later, the tall eucalyptus trees cast shadows on the home earning it the name “Shadow Ranch.”

GLENDALE Casa Adobe de San Rafael 1330 Dorothy Dr. (818) 956-2000 www.ci.glendale.ca.us/parks Built for Tomas Sanchez, first sheriff of Los Angeles County around 1865, the casa features New England-style architecture. Restored in 1932, the adobe includes a Monterey-style corridor (covered porch), sunken garden, brick patio, gray shake roof, and long narrow front windows adorned with green shutters. Interior furnishings are from the 19th century.

The 21 missions that comprise California’s Historic Mission Trail roughly trace El Camino Real (The Royal Road) named in honor of the Spanish monarchy, which financed the expeditions into California in the quest for empire. Mission San Fernando Rey de Espana is the 17th Mission on the California Mission Trail. The Convento is the largest freestanding adobe in California. The church, school, Convento and workshops are open for viewing.

The Doctors House Museum 1601 W. Mountain Ave. (818) 548-2147 www.glendalehistorical.org Known as the “Doctors House” because of its inhabitants – three well-known Glendale physicians, the restored two-story Queen Anne-Eastlake-style home dates to circa 1888. Silent screen star Nell Shipman was a later owner of the home.

NORTH HOLLYWOOD The Campo De Caheunga 3919 Lankershim Blvd. (across from Universal Studios) (818) 762-3998 www.campodecahuenga.com The birthplace of California, Campo de Cahuenga was an adobe farmhouse on the Rancho Verdugo where the Treaty of Cahuenga, ending hostilities in California between Mexico and the United States, was signed in 1847.

NORTHRIDGE Rancho Cordillera del Norte 9015 Wilbur Ave. (818) 349-3431 www.mcmafn.org Rancho Cordillera del Norte (Ranch of the North Ridge) is operated under the auspices of the Multicultural Music and Art Foundation of Northridge. “The Rancho” reflects the history of Indian-Spanish-Mexican California.

The bells in the bell tower were cast in Latin America during the Colonial Period; and the facade of its New Mission Theater was painted by renowned Mission art authority Dr. Norman Neuerburg in the style of Padre Junipero Serra’s Chapel in Jalpan, State of Queretero, Mexico. TUJUNGA Bolton Hall Historical Museum 10110 Commerce Ave. (818) 352-3420 www.laparks.org The “Little Landers,” an early 20th century society of Utopianists, built Bolton Hall as their community center in August 1913. They called it “The Clubhouse.” Bolton Hall contains artifacts, photographs, documents and memorabilia of Sunland-Tujunga and the foothill area. They range historically from the Gabrieleno Indian village through the Mission and Mexican land grant periods to the development of SunlandTujunga and the rescue of Bolton Hall. WEST HILLS Orcutt Horticultural Center Rancho Sombra Del Roble 23600 Roscoe Blvd. (818) 883-6641 www.laparks.org The Orcutt Ranch, formerly called Rancho Sombra del Roble, was the vacation and retirement estate of William Warren Orcutt and his wife, Mary Logan Orcutt. The ranch is historically significant because W.W. Orcutt was a pioneer of the oil production industry in California and discovered the prehistoric fossils at the LaBrea Tar Pits. The residence is surrounded by 24-acres of gardens and a citrus orchard. The gardens include heritage oak trees (one of which is 33 feet in circumference and more than 700 years old).
