Portée de la recherche Scope of Design du processus Research Harvard et MIT avaient été originellement chargés par la Deutsche Bank de développer une petite communauté de 125 unités destinée à servir d’exemple, dans la périphérie de Port-au-Prince. Mais, compte tenu des besoins (300 000 logements), l’équipe a décidé d’élargir considérablement la portée et l’échelle de son étude. Au lieu de se cantonner aux cinq hectares initiaux et à se limiter à des plans de logements, l’équipe a cherché à concevoir un processus d’urbanisation progressive de toute la périphérie nord-ouest de la ville. Le travail d’analyse a été l’occasion d’identifier trois échelles d’intervention, et quatre territoires à étudier dans un corpus de recherches, comme l’illustre ce schéma.
Harvard and MIT were originally charged by Deutsche Bank with the development of a small, 125 unit, Exemplar community at the outskirts of Port au Prince. In the face of over 300,000 units needed in Haiti the team decided to increase the scope and scale of the study. Rather than remaining confined to five hectares and only delivering a housing layout, the team strove to design a process for incremental urbanization of the whole north-western periphery of the city. Through the analysis process, the team identified three scales of engagement, and four territories for which to investigate and produce a body of research, as illustrated by this diagram.
