Dubbed the ‘island of love’ for being the home of the mythical goddess, Aphrodite, Cyprus also has a rich cultural history bursting with multi-layered antiquity. The earliest people are believed to have settled here 9000 years ago, quickly followed by the Phoenicians, Persians and Egyptians, all of whom recognised the island’s vital strategic position between East and West. Cyprus was annexed by Rome in the 58 BC, opening the door to Christianity and by the time of the fourth century AD the island was in the grip of the eastern Byzantine Empire. Remnants of the Byzantine era are still evident today, most notably in the name ‘Five Finger Mountains’. Legend has it that a Byzantine hero leapt onto Cyprus from Turkey, leaving his fingerprints as the jagged mountainscapes. After Richard the Lionheart conquered Cyprus in 1191, the French and Venetians ruled until 1571, when the Ottomans took over. 1925. In 1960 the UN declared it independent and in 1983, it was divided into two with the proclamation of the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus. Culturally, the Turkish Cypriot way of life is rooted in family and hospitality. Guests are greeted into homes with sweets and Turkish coffee – a ritual reflected in the warm welcome proffered at hotels and restaurants. Turkish customs dominate elsewhere too. Locals puff on water pipes (‘nargile’) and play ‘tavlı’ – backgammon – in village coffee houses, while local events are celebrated with Anatolian-style folk-dances, usually accompanied by ‘fasıl’, traditional Turkish lute or fiddle music. Finally, wherever you go, you’ll see the turquoise blue ‘nazar boncuğu’ or evil-eye beads which originate from Anatolia and are believed to ward off evil looks. You’ll see them everywhere – decorating cars, hanging over doors and draped inside houses. 7
Food is one of the greatest pleasures awaiting visitors to North Cyprus. From skewers of kebabs at country lokantas to fine dining beside the lapping waters of the Mediterranean, the region serves up a fabulous choice of culinary experiences.

boiled eggs and fruit. For lunch and dinner, meanwhile, the focus falls on fresh meat or fish kebabs, grilled ‘köfte’ meatballs and more of those crisp salads. Desserts, meanwhile, aren’t just about ‘baklava’. Healthier favourites include ‘sütlaç’ – a low-fat rice pudding – and platters of fresh fruit accompanied by rich Turkish coffee.
Although the food is mostly Turkish, Cyprus’s position at the crossroads of Asia and Europe means it draws on eclectic influences, from Ottoman, Balkan and Greek cuisine to Jewish and central Asian cooking styles. The result is a beguiling fusion of East and West that extends far beyond kebabs and hummus.
Wherever you are, ‘mezes’ usually top the menu. These scrumptious hors d’oeuvres can include anything from grilled halloumi cheese to piles of hummus, feta-filled pastries and other nibbles.
One of the things you’ll notice is how healthy and flavoursome the food is. The locals substitute animal fats with olive oil, using it with plenty of fresh fish, fruit and vegetables, alongside barbecuing and grilling to ensure dishes are bursting with flavour, colour and goodness.
You’ll find a tantalising choice of restaurants across the region too. Kyrenia has the widest variety, from kebab houses and Mediterranean-style cafés to gourmet restaurants, pizzerias and Chinese and Indian eateries. In Bellapais, meanwhile, many restaurants boast terraces overlooking the famous abbey. For the most authentic local dishes, though, head into the countryside. Here you’ll come across family-run lokantas preparing classics like kebabs and mezes to time-honoured recipes.

A delightful coastal town in North Cyprus, Kyrenia is focused around its crescentshaped harbour bobbing with boats and overlooked by a spectacular castle with Byzantine origins, containing a shipwreck museum. Known as Halicarnassus in ancient times, the town of Bodrum on Turkey’s Aegean coast is one of the Mediterranean’s most enticing resorts. Fly via Turkey Take the time-honoured route to North Cyprus by flying to North Cyprus’s Ercan airport via Turkey. Your flight includes a 40-minute courtesy touchdown in Turkey, with no need to change aircraft, so you can remain seated throughout the stop. And although the flying time to Ercan is longer than Larnaca, transfer times are shorter – expect a 40-minute or so journey from the airport to either Kyrenia or Famagusta.
Via Larnaca Heading for North Cyprus? Fly direct and non-stop to Larnaca from any of 18 main and regional UK and Irish airports, with flight times of 4 to 4.5 hours. Fly to Istanbul for a two‑centre holiday If you’re taking a two-centre holiday, we offer scheduled flights from Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester and Birmingham to Istanbul. Transfers to the city centre take approx. 45 minutes. After three or four days in Istanbul, you will then transfer to Alaçatı, Bodrum or North Cyprus for the remainder of your holiday. On your return, your luggage is checked in to your final destination in the UK, helping to ensure a smooth transit at Istanbul. Alternatively, take a Pegasus Airlines flight from London Stansted to Istanbul, a 90-minute transfer (not included) away from the city centre.

In accordance with the Package Travel Regulations 1992, we reserve the right to make changes to the particulars of this brochure after publication. This brochure is valid from 1 November 2013. The descriptions of destinations and hotels have been compiled following inspections by ourselves or our suppliers and have been checked to ensure they are accurate at time of publication. Our descriptions represent a subjective evaluation by Green Island Holidays staff who attempt to convey the style and atmosphere of the destinations and hotels we feature. Changes do occur after publication therefore it is important to check with us at time of booking.
Room description
Most properties in our brochure offer a selection of twin and doublebedded accommodation. Although units may be described as ‘twin’, they will be provided according to availability. If you have a specific preference for twin or double beds, or would prefer single-level accommodation, we will endeavour to meet these requirements; however, it is vital that you inform us at the time of booking. Please note that where we provide details of guest room facilities in the brochure, we cannot guarantee that all rooms will be equipped with all of these.
Hotel ratings and facilities
Accommodation in North Cyprus is not graded by international star ratings and therefore cannot be compared to the rest of Europe. The North Cyprus ratings in our brochure are given as a guide only for you to make the correct accommodation choice as they are not official ratings and are based primarily on evaluation and feedback. Please be aware that changes to facilities may occur after the date of publication. There may be occasions, particularly in low season, when facilities may be withdrawn or changed. Green Island Holidays are not responsible for this as these decisions are taken locally and are dependent upon conditions prevailing at the time; however every reasonable effort will be made by us to advise you if any facility is not available during your stay.
Disabled clients and requests
We are happy to advise disabled clients and to assist them when choosing their holiday and we will do our best to meet their needs. If you or any member of your party has any medical condition or disability which may affect your holiday or has any special requirements as a result of any medical condition or disability (including any that affect the booking process), we must be informed at the time of enquiry and then in writing before you confirm your booking so that we can assist you in considering the suitability of the arrangements and/or making the booking. We must also be informed in writing whenever any change in the condition or disability occurs. If we are not notified of the specific requirements of the disabled person, we regret that we cannot accept any liability if accommodation or
holiday does not meet the expectations of the client. For any special requests such as ground floor rooms or dietary requirements; we will pass your request on to the supplier in question but we cannot guarantee that your request will be met unless we have specifically confirmed this for you.
Local holidays
During local or national holidays, certain facilities such as museums or shops may be limited. Such events are regrettably beyond our control. However, when we are told of significant changes, we will inform you at the time of the booking; or, if you’ve already booked your holiday you will be contacted as soon as reasonably possible if there is time before your departure.
What’s local life like?
As Mediterranean hospitality is renowned worldwide you can expect a warm and friendly welcome in Turkey and North Cyprus. Locals tend to be laid back and things can often take a little longer then we’re used to. During the summer season in North Cyprus it’s not unusual to see locals taking their midday siesta, while in the main resorts some shops may close between 1pm and 3pm and then stay open until late giving everyone the chance to relax on a hot summer afternoon. Banks and government offices are shut on public holidays and you may find that other services are limited on these days. Restaurants, bars and shops on beach resorts do not tend to close on these days.
Important note about duty‑free purchases
Passengers travelling from Ercan in North Cyprus on flights involving an aircraft change in Istanbul should refrain from duty-free liquid purchases at Ercan as they are liable to be confiscated in Istanbul. We suggest that duty-free purchases are made in Istanbul.
What’s the weather like?
Summers are hot and warm in Turkey and North Cyprus and it is almost completely rainless in North Cyprus from May to about mid-November, with the weather being consistent on a day-to-day basis with very little cloud cover. During the winter bad weather rarely lasts more than a day. The average daily hours of sunshine ranges from six hours midwinter to 12 or 13 in midsummer. For those who find high temperatures unpleasant the best time to visit North Cyprus is in the spring, when the island is full of flowers, or autumn, as both are generally sunny and warm.
Money
The local currency in North Cyprus and Turkey is the Turkish Lira. Sterling and Euros can be exchanged or are accepted in most establishments although banks and exchange bureaus may give a more favourable rate. Credit cards are widely used in all the resorts that we offer, alternatively cash machines can be found in town centres for cash
withdrawals in the local currency direct from your bank account. Scottish and Irish bank notes are NOT accepted in Turkey and North Cyprus.
What happens when I arrive at my destination?
If you have booked transfers or where they are included in your package, you will be met by our transfer representatives upon arrival at your destination airport for your journey to the hotel, so please look out for the Green Island Holidays sign or your name(s) on a board. Your representative will advise you one day before your departure about the pick-up time for the return journey. If you are on a two-centre holiday most of our guests make their own way to and from the hotel in Istanbul. We recommend an official taxi for this or finding out about alternative transport by enquiring at the information desk at the airport. All British nationals travelling to Turkey will need to pay for £10 for a visa on entry which should be purchased as soon as you arrive before proceeding to passport control.
When will I get my travel documents?
Upon booking, we will send your ATOL certificate (booking confirmation invoice). Travel documents are sent out within 10 days of departure. Please check that the names and details are correct on all your documents as failure to do so can incur charges, as well as refusal for boarding at the aircraft. Documents for online bookings will be sent by email.
Health & vaccinations
At the time of going to press no compulsory vaccinations are required for Turkey and North Cyprus. Medical regulations are updated from time to time, so we advise you to consult your doctor before departure in case the Department of Health considers any inoculations necessary.
What’s driving like in North Cyprus and Turkey?
Driving in North Cyprus is a pleasure: cars drive on the left, traffic is very light and in some cases non-existent and parking is not too restricted. While taxis are readily available and reasonably priced, public transport can be unreliable. So, hiring a car is highly recommended if you’d like to explore the many attractions of North Cyprus. If you decide to hire a car while you’re on the island, just speak to your rep who will be happy to help – however, please note that hiring a car is not part of your contract with us. Please remember that you will need to have your UK driving licence with you. Cars drive on the right in Turkey. Driving there can be more chaotic, especially in Istanbul, whereas public transport is excellent and very reasonable. Taxis are also a very popular mode of transport as all are now metered.

Booki ng con d i ti ons Payment
A deposit of £75 per person must be paid and sent with a completed, signed booking form together with the appropriate insurance premium if required. In some cases, a higher booking deposit is required to cover non-refundable airline tickets. On receipt of your booking form we will issue a confirmation invoice as soon as your full itinerary is confirmed. The total cost of your holiday is payable to us no later than 10 weeks prior to departure. If the balance remains unpaid after this date, we reserve the right to cancel your booking and retain the deposit paid. Any money paid by a customer to a travel agent in respect of a booking with Lorenz Voyager Travel Limited is held by the agent on behalf of Lorenz Voyager Travel Limited.
Late bookings
Bookings received by us 10 weeks or less prior to departure are deemed to be late bookings. When you make a definite booking through your travel agent or by telephone directly with us, you must pay the total cost of the booking at that time. Should you subsequently cancel the reservation made you will be subject to cancellation charges detailed in “Cancellation by the client”. A late booking may be accepted by us either by telephone or by the issuing of a confirmation invoice.
Alteration by the client
Lorenz Voyager Travel Limited & its agents will do their utmost, but cannot guarantee to comply with any request for alteration to a booking. An amendment fee of £30 per person will be applied. Please note that any amendment made after tickets have been issued will be treated as a cancellation and will attract a minimum charge of £180 per person.
Cancellation by the client
Cancellation of your holiday must be notified to us in writing. The cancellation charges depend upon when your written notice is received and will be levied as follows. Note: Certain travel arrangements (e.g. ADVANCE PURCHASE TICKETS) cannot be changed once the reservation has been confirmed and a 100% cancellation charge will be incurred.
Cancellation or alteration by the company

The company reserves the right to modify or cancel any holiday, flight schedule, accommodation or other arrangements, in the event that the holiday chosen by the customer cannot be provided for any reason. If the circumstances referred to in the preceding paragraph occur before the customer’s departure, the company undertakes to offer the customer alternative arrangements, or, if this is not acceptable, a full refund of all monies paid. We plan your holiday arrangements many months in advance and although it is unlikely that we have to make any changes to confirmed arrangements, it does occasionally happen. Most changes are of a minor nature and we will advise you (or your travel agent) at the earliest possible date. Should we have to cancel a tour, holiday or other travel arrangements as a result of any force majeure, we will inform you without delay and will offer an alternative holiday of at least comparable standard, if available, or a prompt and full refund of all monies paid. Any such refunds will be sent to agents within 10 clear days or direct to clients within 14 clear days. Should we be forced to cancel your holiday for any reason other than force majeure or non-payment of an outstanding balance, the company, in addition to refunding all monies paid, will pay compensation ompensation as per the following paragraph.
If we change your holiday
If a major change becomes necessary, we will inform you or your travel agent as soon as is reasonably possible if there is time before your departure. A major change is one that we make to your holiday arrangements before departure that involves changing your airport(s) except Heathrow, Stansted, Luton, Gatwick, resort area or time of departure or return by more than 12 hours, or offering accommodation with a lower rating. You will then have a choice of either: A. Accepting the changed arrangements as notified to you B. Purchasing another available holiday from us C. Cancelling your holiday If you choose A or B, we will pay compensation on the scale shown below. If you choose C, we will refund all monies paid to us. In no case will we pay compensation if the change is due to an event listed in “Important Notice” below.

Travel documents
It is the responsibility of the client to ensure that passports, visas, vaccination certificates and any other necessary travel documents are valid for the journey(s) to be undertaken.
Our guarantee on price/surcharge
Important Notice Compensation payments do not apply to changes caused by reason of war or threat of war, riots, civil strife, terrorist activity, industrial dispute, natural or nuclear disasters, fire, technical problems to transport, closure or congestion of airports or ports, cancellation or changes of schedules by scheduled airlines and similar events beyond our control.
We guarantee that the price of your holiday will not be subject to surcharge except for government action such as VAT, currency and increases in fuel. Even in these cases we will absorb an amount equivalent to 2% of the holiday price which excludes insurance premiums and any amendment charges. Only amounts in excess of this 2% will be surcharged but where surcharge is payable there will be an administration charge of 50p together with an amount to cover the agent’s commission. IIf this means paying more than 10% of your holiday price, you will be entitled to cancel your holiday with a full refund of all monies paid except for any premium paid to us for holiday insurance and amendment charges. Should you decide to cancel because of this you should exercise your right to do so within 14 days from the date of the invoice. No refund will be granted should sterling gain in value against the appropriate currencies prior to your departure. All prices quoted in this brochure are based on fuel costs and exchange rates on 25 October 2013 as quoted from the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey: 3.21TL. All services in this brochure to North Cyprus and Turkey are paid in sterling.

The air holiday packages in this brochure are ATOL protected by the Civil Aviation Authority. Our ATOL number is 4846. When you buy an ATOLprotected air holiday package from us (Green Island Holidays) you will receive a confirmation invoice confirming your arrangements and your protection under our air travel organisers licence (4846). When you travel with a carrier, the conditions of carriage of that carrier will apply, some of which may limit liability. The conditions of carriage of that carrier are incorporated into this contract. You may ask for copies of the relevant conditions of carriage from our offices. We, or our local agents, have personally inspected all of the properties featured in our brochure and the information given is supplied by them and is believed to be correct at the time of printing. However, since this brochure is prepared many months in advance it is possible that some features may change. Should you have any cause for complaint, please bring it to the attention of the hotel manager or our representative who will deal with it on the spot. If the matter cannot be resolved during your stay, then please notify us in writing within 30 days of your return to the UK.
Arbitration
Disputes arising out of, or in connection with, this contract which cannot be resolved amicably, may (if the customer so wishes), be referred to arbitration under a special scheme which, though devised by arrangements with the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), is administered quite independently by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. The contract arising from any confirmed holiday booking is to be interpreted under and is subject to the laws of England. We will agree to submit any dispute or claim under it to the English Courts (if you live in England or Wales) or the Scottish Courts (if you live in Scotland). This brochure is valid from 1 November 2013 until further notice. It is based on the sole responsibility of Lorenz Voyager Travel Limited and does not commit the airlines, transportation companies and hotels etc. mentioned therein.
Travel insurance
As per our booking conditions we require all our guests travelling have adequate travel insurance (please see our booking conditions). As part of the new legislation Green Island Holidays have opted not sell travel insurance directly to our customers and we act as an agent on behalf of Blue Travel Insurance who are fully regulated to sell travel insurance and offer comprehensive cover. We strongly advise that when buying travel insurance you read carefully all the questions and if you are unsure of any questions call the company direct as they are happy to help you. Please remember any incorrect information you give or failure to disclose of medical conditions even pre-existing or similar could void your policy.
