City Offers Brush Removal Program

The brush removal program is a courtesy service that the City of Laredo provides to residents who have no means of hauling their branches to the Landfill. Please help us maintain this service by following the program guidelines carefully. The City of Laredo will continue providing the heavy brush service but does ask residents to be patient. Solid Waste Services collects garbage from approximately 58,000 homes. Residents have the option of taking branches to the Landfill at no cost with a current utility bill and a valid Texas identification. The Landfill is open Monday through Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pick-up trucks hauling a trailer must enter the Landfill 30 minutes before closing. Eighteenwheelers must enter the Landfill before 2:30 p.m. Please call 796-1098 if you are being asked by a City of Laredo employee to pay for branch collection services. Small Piles and Bagged Yard Waste Yard waste in bags and small piles of trimmings and/or pruning waste from trees that are bundled are collected by hand by solid waste crews. Grass clippings, weeds, plants, and leaves are considered yard waste. Remember that your collection day depends on what ZIP Code you reside in (see box on page 2). Here are the set-out guidelines for small piles: • Small branches include branches that are 3 inches or less in diameter and 5 feet or less in length. Bundle and tie small branches with string or twine. This makes pickup faster, allowing crews to collect branches efficiently and serve you better. • Bag grass, leaves, and other small trimmings. You may use paper or plastic bags. Filled bags may not weigh more than 30 pounds. • Please place bagged and bundled yard waste at the curb one day before your assigned collection day. If you or your gardener sets out branches or yard waste on your collection day, you will probably miss the pickup because crews begin collecting at 7 a.m. If you miss the pickup,

Heavy Brush Heavy brush is collected by equipment, so you must make arrangements prior to collection. These appointments are made on a first-come, first-served basis depending on availability of equipment and workload. To request an appointment, call 3-1-1. Once you have made an appointment, you may pile your brush. The grapple equipment that is used for collection can handle piles up to 6 feet high by 5 feet wide by 4 feet deep. Follow these guidelines in placing your pile near the curb: • Place the large pile of brush away from potential obstacles, such as the Willie Bote trashcan, mailboxes, fences, walls, water meters, telephone connection boxes, and parked cars. • Avoid placing large brush under low-hanging tree limbs or power lines. Since piles are picked up by automated equipment with a long arm, they need to be accessible. • Please be aware that changing weather conditions and large volumes sometimes cause delays in the pickup schedule. Oversize Piles The owner is responsible to deliver any pile larger than the dimensions given above directly to the Landfill. According to the City ordinance (Chapter 14-3 Section 6D), “heavy accumulations such as brush, glass, broken concrete, ashes, sand, dirt or gravel, automobile frames, dead trees, and other bulky, heavy non-putrescible materials shall be disposed of at the expense of the owner or person controlling the same by a method directed by the City.” The method directed by the City is, in this case, delivery to the Landfill. Code Enforcement officers will be conducting visits to those homes that have huge piles that could be considered safety hazards set out by the curb. en la página 2). Earth Day and the environmental echo effect April is an exciting month full of outstanding local events that highlight Earth Day and create awareness about protecting health and the environment. At the various events, those in attendance learn to appreciate our environment, discover local resources, and pledge to be good stewards — not just for a day or a month, but for the entire year. A result that continues long after the events are over is the environmental echo effect, which moves out like a wave into the community on the commitments and actions of those who were in attendance. Whether it is setting a good example by recycling right, or explaining to a neighbor how to properly handle brush, or teaching a child how to pack a waste-

free lunch at home, the information from the events echoes out into the community. Thank you to everyone who took part in the events and for the ways that you’ll spread an environmental echo in the coming year. Congratulations to all of the agencies that were involved in making the local events possible. The first Earth Day celebration on April 22, 1970 mobilized Americans to get out into their communities to clean up and to encourage their legislators to pass laws that would protect the environment and human health. Each Earth Day is a celebration of all that has been accomplished since 1970 and a reminder of all of the work we have yet to do.

Earth Day Goes to School: This spring, Billie Bote joined our staff members at the School of Wonder, as well as other Laredo schools, to teach students about recycling. From April 17 through April 21, Texas A&M International University celebrated Earth Week 2017 with a series of activities on campus. The first was the recycling station, which included recycling containers for items including aluminum cans, plastic and paper, a trash toss for prizes, and a refreshing “Water Bar.” The City of Laredo partnered with the University’s Environmental Health and Safety office, Housing and Residence Life, and the

office of the Vice President for Finance and Administration, along with Schneider Electric, a global specialist in energy management and automation. Recycling on campus began in October 2009 when the University invested in specialized outdoor containers to collect recyclables. The University has continued to embrace a commitment to sustainability in the years since.

La estación de reciclaje inicia la Semana de la Tierra en TAMIU Desde el 17 hasta el 21 de abril, la Universidad Internacional Texas A&M celebró la Semana de la Tierra 2017 con una serie de actividades en el campus. Keep It Up Paper recycling at record high rate in the U.S. According to the American Forest & Paper Association, the paper recovery rate in the U.S. reached a record high of 67.2% in 2016! That’s more than double the rate first measured back in Credit: temmuzcan | E+ | Getty Images 1990. U.S. paper mills used 30.8 million tons of recovered paper, and we exported a net 21.8 million tons of recovered paper. Recycling that much paper saved 177 million cubic yards of landfill space, or enough to fill the Empire State Building 129 times! So where does all of that paper go? Nearly 80% of U.S. paper makers use some recovered paper to make products such as office paper, newsprint, tissue products, and paperboard. Recovered paper is also feedstock for insulation and molded pulp products, such as egg cartons and packaging materials.

Page 3 Recycling paper not only saves landfill space, but it also saves trees, conserves energy, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions, as well: • Trees: Approximately 1.2 trees are used to produce just two cartons (20 reams) of 100% virgin copier paper. The more recycled paper we use in making paper, the fewer trees we have to harvest and use. • Energy: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that every ton of mixed paper recycled can save the energy equivalent of 166 gallons of gasoline. That means in 2016 we saved the energy equivalent of over 8.7 billion gallons of gasoline just by recycling paper! • Emissions: Recycling paper and paperboard at the current volume is equivalent to taking 31 million cars off of the road each year — about the number of cars and light trucks registered in the State of California! Even though the recycling rate of paper is higher than ever, more than 30% of our waste paper is still being disposed instead of recycled. In 2016, 20.9 million tons of recyclable paper were landfilled. That’s about 129 pounds for every person in America annually. We can do better! Just think of the difference we can make by recycling the rest of our newspaper, magazines and catalogs, junk mail, office and school paper, and cardboard instead of trashing it!

Safe Disposal of Hot Ashes and Coal Charcoal and ashes should never be placed directly into your trash can. Improperly discarded material can pose a fire risk and jeopardize the safety and health of the truck driver, recycle facility workers, and the public. Charcoal, charred firewood, and ashes can remain hot enough to start a fire for many hours, perhaps days, after you think the fire is out. As a safety precaution, treat all charcoal, charred wood, and ashes as hot. Disposal of Ashes and Coal: • Allow coals to burn out completely and let ashes cool at least 48 hours. • Dispose of cold ashes by wrapping them in heavy-duty aluminum foil and placing them in your Willie Bote trash can. (Keep the trash can outdoors.) • If you must dispose of ashes before they are completely cooled, soak them in water and then place them in heavy-duty foil. • Be sure no other combustible materials are nearby. • Do not place ash and coal debris in your Billie Bote recycle cart.

“Use by” doesn’t mean “throw away by”

Most “expiration” dates on products, often noted with “Best If Used By,” “Sell By,” or “Use By,” aren’t really expiration dates. Instead, they are manufacturer suggestions about freshness and quality. Very few products truly carry expiration dates, such as infant formula. On all other

Check to see what you have on hand. After that, make a list of what you really need. • Reuse what you already own. Check closets for forgotten tote bags, backpacks, lunch boxes, and refillable containers. Go through last year’s supplies to find the basics: scissors, rulers, binders, etc. Many items can be reused from year to year. Remember — reusing

your own stuff is also cheaper and less stressful than hitting the stores. • When you do go shopping, browse reused first. Look for used clothes, shoes, appliances, books, toys, games, office supplies, and household goods online, at garage sales, or at resale shops. • Buy recycled by picking up recycledcontent paper, pens, pencils, scissors, rulers, file folders, binders, storage containers, and jewelry. • Purchase refilled or remanufactured inkjet cartridges for your printers. Busque ropa, zapatos, utensilios, libros, juguetes, juegos, suministros de oficina y artículos domésticos usados en internet, en ventas de garaje o en tiendas de reventa. • Compre lo reciclado escogiendo papel de contenido reciclado, plumas, lápices, tijeras, reglas, cuadernos de archivo o de argollas, y contenedores para almacenaje. • Compre cartuchos de tinta rellenados o remanufacturados para sus impresoras. O compre un estuche para rellenar y hágalo usted mismo.
