THE PROFESSIONALS PHD LICENSED PROFESSIONAL COUNSELOR Are there warning signs of an impending divorce? The first three minutes of an argument determines if communication goes well or poorly. Ninety-six percent of the time, if you bring an issue to your spouse’s attention harshly, it will escalate into an COURTNEY LINSENMEYERO’BRIEN, PHD, LPC, MHR argument. Criticism, defensiveness and contempt are when things get really bad in an argument. When people are belligerent in an argument and don’t listen, stonewalling (shutting down and not listening) follows. Fighting or abandoning the argument then results in failed repair attempts leaving bad memories. Deeply entrenched couples often have a negative view of their relationship, and both people will rewrite the past, staying locked into this phase. If couples cannot recall fond memories of the marriage, feelings of resentment become central and negative sentiment overrides, in which damaging intentions are felt from one or both individuals. Marital mediation is helpful if not necessary at this stage in marriage.

VETERINARIAN July 4 is such a wonderful time to celebrate with friends and family. What can I do to safeguard my pets against the holiday activity? The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center offers the following tips: • Never leave alcoholic drinks where pets can reach them. Alcoholic beverages have the potential to poison pets. DR. RODNEY ROBARDS • Do not apply any sunscreen or insect repellent product to your pet that is not labeled specifically for use on animals. • Always keep matches and lighter fluid out of your pets’ reach. Lighter fluid can be irritating to skin, and if ingested can produce gastrointestinal irritation and central nervous system depression. If lighter fluid is inhaled, aspiration pneumonia and breathing problems could develop. • Keep your pets on their normal diet. • Keep citronella candles, insect coils and oil products out of reach. • Never use fireworks around pets! While exposure to lit fireworks can potentially result in severe burns and/or trauma to the face and paws of curious pets, even unused fireworks can pose a danger. • Loud, crowded fireworks displays are no fun for pets, so please resist the urge to take them to Independence Day festivities. Instead, keep your little guys safe from the noise in a quiet, sheltered and escape-proof area at home.

BUSINESS BANKER What is net worth, and why is it important when applying for a business loan? One of the most important factors that our bank considers when evaluating a business loan request is whether the client has sufficient net worth to qualify for a loan. Net SEAN KOUPLEN worth is a company’s equity or assets in excess of liabilities. This is the cushion a business uses to operate when their cash flow suffers. This cushion can be excess cash owned by the business or owners; it can also be equity and assets that can be turned into cash in tough times. We analyze the applicant’s financial statement to determine if the cushion is adequate. Sometimes, business owners mistakenly withdraw much of a business’ cash when things are good, and there’s no cushion available when times get tough. Business owners that have an adequate cushion demonstrate discipline in their finances, making them a great candidate for a business loan.

Are recreational vehicles covered on my home policy? Yes and no. Canoes and boats under 15HP may be covered automatically on your home policy. Boats over 15HP require a boat endorsement to your home policy or a separate policy. A replacement cost policy JOHN ONORATO may be available for boats under 3 years old. Boats over 3 years old are usually covered on an agreed value basis, and boats over 10 years old are covered on an actual cash value basis. Onwater towing is an optional coverage on most boat policies. Seado’s (personal watercraft), motorcycles and ATVs all require their own policy. Trip interruption, towing and other services are available as endorsements to policies for all street legal vehicles. Accessory coverage is an optional endorsement. In addition to covering recreation vehicles for loss, it is important to cover your liability for injury or property damage to others. Since recreational vehicles are used less often, the risk for injury is greater. It’s a good idea to use the same or higher liability limits than those found on your personal auto policy. For additional information or explanation of benefits on recreational vehicle insurance, call or stop by your local AAA Insurance office.

PR & MARKETING CONSULTANT Are testimonials powerful when used to promote my business? There is no better advertising than word-of-mouth. A happy customer singing your praises can bring new customers to your door and boost your reputation. This form of JESSICA DYER promotion is one of the most credible forms of advertising, because your customers are putting their reputation on the line as well. Because both companies are being represented, it’s important that both are accurately and positively depicted. Also, be mindful to use only testimonials from long-term clients and employees. You don’t want to build a campaign around someone who could potentially go to work for your competitor. And, as always, get written permission and compliance approval before publishing anything, and make sure everyone is clear on how the material will be used. Testimonials can be mutually beneficial and your clients will be thankful for the advertising that they might otherwise have to pay for. When done right, testimonials can be one of the most effective forms of promotion.

PHYSICAL THERAPY My doctor has told me that I have a frozen shoulder. Is it really frozen? Otherwise known as adhesive capsulitis, is rare in patients younger than 40 and more common in sedentary workers than in TODD PETTY, laborers. This condition involves PT/CSMT a progressive fibrosis proliferation that restricts motion and is painful. This fibrosis involves the joint capsule, rotator cuff tendons and surrounding ligaments in varying degrees. The cause is uncertain but is usually initiated by some type of trauma or overuse insult. The condition can be progressive and last up to six months. Early recognition makes the reversal much easier and recovery shorter. If you develop a stiff and painful shoulder, speak with your physician about a Physical Therapy referral and early treatment.
