2013 Grapevine YEA! Program. Make plans to join us for the luncheon at the Grapevine Convention Center, 1209 S. Main St. in Grapevine. The cost is $25 with reservations made prior to 5 p.m., Tuesday, June 11, and $30 after. There is a $5 fee for invoicing. Reservations not cancelled in advance will be billed. Are You Watching Your Investment in the Chamber? People are always asking me why I am a member of the Chamber of Commerce and why I sponsor Chamber functions in different areas. My response to these questions is the topic I want to discuss with you this month. One of my beliefs, with the Chamber and business in general, is that the benefits you receive are based on how much effort and energy you put into it. Your investment in the Chamber is just

that, an investment. If you want to get the most out of it, you need to be involved and find those different events, groups, etc., where you can maximize your investment and marketing dollar. The Chamber offers so many investment opportunities to provide value to your business. My company, Blagg Tire & Service, has been a sponsor of the Grapevine Chamber for the last five years, and I can tell you that people recognize us because we are listed on just about everything distributed by the

Some other examples are the 34th Annual Grapevine Chamber Golf Classic September 30 and The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) beginning in September. Both of these are great examples of where your sponsorship not only impacts the community, but also provides a great marketing resource for your business. You are targeting other Continued on page 2

ACCREDITATION Your Chamber Reaches for the Stars!

In April 2013, the Grapevine Chamber Board of Directors was notified that the Chamber had received the 4-Star Accreditation level from the U.S Chamber of Commerce. This announcement came after two years of effort by the Chamber’s Board of Directors and staff, with help from Chambers throughout Texas. Now many of our Chamber members are asking, “What does accreditation mean?” Accreditation with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the only program of its kind that defines excellence in Chamber planning and recognizes Chambers for outstanding contributions toward positive change in their communities. The purpose of the U.S. Chamber’s Accreditation Program is to facilitate continuing excellence in the Chamber industry and to foster a pro-business environment across America. Of the 6,936 Chambers in the United States, only 217 of these Chambers are accredited. These elite Chambers represent the top 3% of all Chambers in the United States. The national accreditation statistics are as follows: 16 are Accredited – 8%

42 are 3-Star – 20%

77 are 4-Star – 36%

76 are 5-Star – 36%

Who is Accredited? There are more than 800 Chambers that have participated in the program since 1964, among which only 217 currently remain accredited. With nearly 7,000 Chambers in the United States, accreditation with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is a prestigious honor that distinguishes the high quality, expertise, and strong leadership displayed by accredited state and local Chambers of Commerce.

Why Become Accredited? By earning accreditation from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a Chamber shows its dedication to: • Reviewing, improving and promoting strong business practices • Recognizing leadership and outstanding contributions to the community • Supporting the principles of free enterprise and promoting pro-growth policies at federal, state and local levels • Establishing best practices and staying in-step with industry changes

What Exactly is Accreditation? The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Accreditation Program defines standards of excellence in Chamber planning and performance and shows Chambers how they can reach and maintain these standards. The program also helps Chambers measure achievement, while recognizing and encouraging Chamber members and staff who meet high standards of operation and who contribute effectively to the good of their Chambers and communities. The criteria and standards used in the guidelines become tools for management control and self-discipline—guiding the organization by helping it upgrade and improve its basic effectiveness. Chambers that have earned accreditation value the process as a worthwhile experience. It has helped them focus attention on the many important factors that add to successful Chamber performance.

What Are the Benefits of Becoming Accredited for the Grapevine Chamber?

• Enhances leadership development • Provides a benchmark with which to evaluate the quality of the Chamber • Provides better direction for the Chamber board and staff • Helps Chambers develop a realistic Program of Work • Promotes upgrades in Chamber bylaws, policies and procedures • Develops pride in the organization • Helps with membership development • Brings prestige, respect and recognition to the Chamber

There were nine specific areas that the Chamber was required to report on, which included: Governance, Finance, Human Resources, Government Affairs, Program Development, Technology, Communications, Facilities and Benchmarking. Accreditation lasts for five years. To maintain the status, or upgrade the level of accreditation, an application must be made by the fifth year, so the Grapevine Chamber Board and staff will begin the process again in four years. For our Chamber members, accreditation says that their organization has created strong accounting principles, program integrity and procedures and that the Chamber continues to build quality into the development of the Chamber and our community. The Grapevine Chamber is a team effort of our investors, Board of Directors and staff, and we can all be proud of the accomplishment and recognition of receiving this 4-Star Accreditation. www.grapevinechamber.org J U LY 2013 l 3

Looking Ahead to Year Two of the Grapevine YEA! Progam What YEA Is The second year of the Young Entrepreneurs Academy, hosted by the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce and Grapevine Colleyville ISD, will begin in September. What is YEA!? The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) is a ground-breaking program that takes students through the process of starting and running real businesses over the course of a full academic year. YEA! students, as a class, visit area businesses, meet successful entrepreneurs, meet with professionals (attorneys, accountants, bankers, graphic designers, web developers, insurance providers, etc.), develop a business idea and plan and work with mentors. Students then pitch their ideas “live” to a panel of investors, made up of local business and community leaders with real dollars at stake to obtain funding. The students then take all of the steps necessary to, and then actually do, launch their venture. Community support strengthens the program, and the academy strengthens the community. YEA!’s direct mission is to help students embrace their passion, energy, creativity and talents, and view entrepreneurship as synonymous with success and freedom. The magic is that YEA! teaches kids to believe in themselves, to think big and to understand that they can achieve anything they set their minds to. In the process, YEA! students learn as much about leadership and self-empowerment as they do about planning, budgeting and production. YEA! students discover in themselves confidence, optimism and capabilities they never knew they had.

What YEA! Achieved the First Year The Grapevine Chamber of Commerce and Grapevine-Colleyville ISD hosted the first year of YEA! during the 2012-2013 academic year. We saw 21 students ranging in age from 11 to 17 brainstorm, research, and write business plans representing 17 businesses. The businesses ranged from hand-drawn, artistic notecards to portable hail covers for automobiles to flavored pickles to video production. The students presented their business ideas to members of the Investor Panel in March 2013, where they received capital funds for their businesses. Throughout the year, students heard from 19 guest speakers, attended 5 fieldtrips,

worked with 20 mentors, had their business plans reviewed by 4 bankers, developed company logos and other graphic designs with 22 students from TCU’s School of Art, worked with 13 website developers to launch their websites and were guided by 4 instructors through the entire process. In total, the students were assisted by more than 1,800 hours volunteered by members of the local business community.

How You Can Partner Investment Partner The YEA! Program could not be a success without the financial backing of its investment partners. Partners provide a financial investment to offset costs associated with the running of the program, for tuition scholarships for talented and interested students who otherwise may not be able to attend, and to create the bank of funds that are allocated to the businesses as startup capital during the Investors Panel event. Partners that invest $2500 or more gain a seat on the Investor Panel. As an Investor Panel member, you are allocated dollars to award to the student businesses based on their business plans, presentation and answers to questions asked after their presentation. Mentor Partner We are also in need of mentors to work one-on-one with the student businesses as they finalize their business plans and prepare their Investor Panel presentations. The mentors do not need to know how to write a business plan or put together a presentation. The mentors provide knowledge on the best way to present information, written and verbal, to an adult in a business setting. If you are interested in becoming an Investment Partner, Mentor Partner, or would like to know more about the YEA! Program, contact Michael Miori, Director of Program Development at Michael@GrapevineChamber.org. If you have a Grapevine Colleyville ISD middle school or high school student interested in the YEA! Program, have them go to the Chamber’s website to download the application.

GrapeFest – A Wine Experience, September 12-15 The largest wine festival in the Southwest, GrapeFest – A Wine Expereince celebrates its 27th anniversary September 12-15. Festival goers will enjoy award-winning wines and non-stop live music during a weekend of fun. The Grapevine Chamber will again host a Concession Trailer and Beer Booth at the festival, and is in need of teams of volunteers to staff shifts. Shifts in the Chamber’s Concession trailer require six to eight volunteers, who are responsible for the cooking and selling of carnival food items. By taking an entire shift, your business or organization is promoted on the side of the trailer while you volunteer, and you are welcome to wear a shirt promoting your business or organization as well. This can be an excellent, fun team building event for your office! The Chamber’s Beer Booth is another fun way to volunteer during the festival. The booth is next the festival’s main stage; so you’ll be in a perfect spot to hear the best entertainers throughout the weekend!

Grapevine Chamber of Commerce Women’s Division In partnership with the Colleyville Area Chamber of Commerce, Grapevine Chamber of Commerce, and Women’s Division of the Grapevine Chamber Hosts the

2013 Texas Star Welcome GCISD Educators Luncheon

The Women’s Division is in full-swing preparing for back-toschool and our School Supplies distribution. We were recently informed that there are 1924 students in GCISD that are in need of assistance for school supplies. This is up from 1197 last year, so it is quite an increase. This seems to be the trend everywhere as Operation Back to School in the HEB district has seen a dramatic increase as well. Information coming from the GCISD tells us that the percentage of economically disadvantaged children in the district has risen from 8% to 25% over the past four years. In addition to the increased numbers in need, the price of school supplies has risen as well. So – we have a big task before us. Thanks to the fundraising that we’ve done over the past years we will be able to provide supplies for all of the elementary students. We are working in conjunction with CONNECT to secure funds to meet the needs of the middle and high school students as well. If you or your company is interested in providing funds for additional school supply packs or in donating back packs for the students, please contact Nancy Coplen at 817.300.8351 or at coplen2@gmail.com. We had a fun time at our monthly luncheon in June, thanks to a great program by the folks at SeaLife Aquarium. It seems like I’m forever doing something to take care of my dog – I can’t imagine what it takes to care for and feed all those animals! Thank goodness there’s a team to handle it. It was great to learn about the educational programs they have as well as how they are taking steps to protect and care for the environment right here in Grapevine. Please consider joining us for our luncheon in July. The program will be a style show from Style and Grace in conjunction with our annual Women’s Division Business Fair. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 16th in the Third Floor Community Room at Stacy Furniture. Contact Casey Hege no later than Friday, July 12th for reservations at 682-551-6824 or casey@boxinsurance.com. Many thanks to our luncheon sponsor for July, Keri Caruthers with Denton Prescription. Finally – SAVE THE DATE! Our annual HoHoHoeDown will be held on December 19th, so mark your calendars now.
