Business Matters Mission:

Grapevine Serving Our Businesses!

The mission of the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce is to promote business that adds value to our community.

Vision: The vision of the Grapevine Chamber is a progressive business organization that brings relevant and essential opportunities for our investors and community to grow and prosper.

Values: Excellence Innovation Integrity & Community

It’s been a wild ride since mid March….but the City of Grapevine and YOUR Chamber of Commerce staff are all back in the office and open for business, working to serve you! We still have a couple of ZOOM Committee meetings (I have started calling it the “Z” Word) but are quickly and safely resuming our in person meetings. Your Board of Directors have been back the last two months, meeting at the Blankenship Business Center and working hard to finish 2020 strong.

We had the opportunity to celebrate Leadership Grapevine graduation last month at our first in person luncheon since February at the Convention Center, while practicing social distancing in seating and service. Congratulations to our graduates! If you or one of your employees are interested in applying for next year’s class, we are now taking applications. The class fills up quickly, so don’t delay. It is a wonderful way to experience the inner workings of Grapevine and our region – from tourism and hospitality, to transportation, health and city services, as well as several other areas that make this region a great place to live and work. As we wade into a post COVID-19 world, I am proud to see citizens of Grapevine anxious to safely get back together. As Mayor Tate has said, ‘Your local retailers and

favorite watering holes are open and waiting for you.’

Mr. Big has enjoyed resuming his walks on Main Street and he encourages you to join him…Shop often and shop Grapevine!

Important Dates for the U.S. Census: Counting every person living in the United States is a massive undertaking, and efforts begin years in advance. Here’s a look at some of the key dates along the way, as they are currently scheduled:

2020: • January 21: The Census Bureau started counting the population in remote Alaska. The count officially began in the rural Alaskan village of Toksook Bay. • March 12 - March 20: Households received official Census Bureau mail with detailed information on how to respond to the 2020 Census online, by phone, or by mail. • April 1: This is Census Day, a key reference date for the 2020 Census—not a deadline. We use this day to determine who is counted and where in the 2020 Census. When you respond, you’ll tell the Census Bureau where you live as of April 1, 2020, and include everyone who usually lives and sleeps in your home. You can respond before or after that date. We encourage you to respond as soon as you can. • Starting mid-April: The Census Bureau mailed paper questionnaires to homes that had not yet responded online or by phone. • July 1 - September 3: Census takers will work with administrators at colleges, senior centers, prisons, and other facilities that house large groups of people to make sure everyone is counted. • August 11 – October 31: Census takers will interview homes that haven’t responded to the 2020 Census to help make sure everyone is counted. • December: The Census Bureau will deliver apportionment counts to the President and Congress as required by law.

2 I JULY, 2020 I www.grapevinechamber.org

2021: • March 31: By this date, the Census Bureau will send redistricting counts to the states. This information is used to redraw legislative districts based on population changes. Already Completed: • January - September 2019: The U.S. Census Bureau opened more than 200 area census offices across the country. These offices support and manage the census takers who work all over the country to conduct the census. • August - October 2019: Census workers visited areas that have experienced a lot of change and growth to ensure that the Census Bureau’s address list is up to date. This process is called address canvassing, and it helps to make sure everyone receives an invitation to participate in the census. TODAY’S RESPONSE RATE:

National Self-Response Rate 61.8% Texas Self-Response Rate 56.5% Tarrant County Self-Response Rate 62.9% Colleyville Self-Response Rate 83.2% Coppell Self-Response Rate 76.8% Grapevine Self-Response Rate 69.0% Irving Self-Response Rate 54.4% Keller Self-Response Rate 79.6% Southlake Self-Response Rate 78.6% Curtesy2020census.gov/en/response-rates.html on June 28th, 2020.

Empower & Serve The Women’s Division is excited to announce that our July luncheon will be at the Blankenship Business Center so that we can all be together again. The luncheon will be on Tuesday July 14th – 11:45 AM – 1:00 PM. The speaker will be Brandi Edwards, owner of The Self Love Challenge. This presentation will empower you to make yourself a priority, not an option, even during difficult times. There is power when you take time to pause and choose to invest in yourself. Self-care is not selfish, it is necessary. Thank you to Total Hospice and Palliative Care for being our sponsors for the July luncheon. As a Non-Profit we are tasked to raise funds a different way this year. Great Taste 25th Anniversary will be held in 2021 which is one of our largest money makers. We use those funds to help purchase school supply packs for the underprivileged children in GCISD. Would you like to help us out this year and sponsor a BTS Supply Pack for $25? GCISD has 1,400 students who are needing our assistance this year. A donation link will be coming soon on the Chamber website. Every year we get asked how people can help with the BTS Fair and this is the year we will make it happen! The school supplies will be given to the families on Saturday August 8th at the GCISD BTS Fair at Cross Timbers Middle School.

1601 Campus Dr. Hurst, TX 76054 Program: Joe Daniels, President & CEO National Medal of Honor Museum

Another way to donate is to purchase a gift card, bottle of wine or a bottle of liquor that was donated to Great Taste 2020. We will use those donations to purchase BTS pre-packaged school supplies and our Christmas Spirit Program for the elderly in Grapevine. A link will be coming soon on the Chamber’s website. Grapevine restaurants donated the gift cards before COVID19 struck and they need our support now more than ever. Enjoy your summer! Be sure to join us for lunch on the 14th!

Must Be Present to Win!

Our Motto is S.E.R.V.E. –

With Mr. Travis William’s from Braum’s, not present at our June Luncheon, the prize is now $700 for our July 9th Luncheon. Each month through the sponsorship of First Financial Bank, an additional $50 is added to the prize pot, so the dollar amount grows as long as the person whose name is called is not in attendance. To win, all you have to do is attend the luncheon and hear your name be called! Every representative’s name is included for each chamber member, so everyone has an opportunity - you only have to have your name drawn to be Present to Win!

Tarrant SBDC Has Helped 1,000+ Businesses Over Its 33 Year History! For over 33 years, the Tarrant Small Business Development Center (Tarrant SBDC) has been a resource to the citizens, entrepreneurs, and business owners of Tarrant County. We have assisted thousands of entrepreneurs either start a business, grow their business, or doing these COVID-19 days help them to sustain their business. Our advisors have over 200 years of experience as business leaders, business owners, and business advisors.

We understand the language of small businesses and the process that is necessary to help them be successful. We even have award-winning advisors such as Cle Royal, who is the top advisor in the state of Texas as a significant part of our team. The goal of the Tarrant SBDC is to support the ecosystem of our community through the economic development of Small businesses. COVID-19 has proven to be a challenge for so many business owners. We find ourselves navigating through a new normal, and unfortunately for the business owner, this may not even be the final new normal. The small business entrepreneur is often challenged to overcome new issues every day. The new attitude that they live with is not a matter of “will or won’t, but a matter

8 I JULY, 2020 I www.grapevinechamber.org

of do or don’t.” This new attitude reinforces the commitment to their business, customers, values, and purpose. When history evaluates the Entrepreneurs’ response to Covid-19, it will see a challenge that was met while facing the most stressful and unusual environmental, health, and financially difficult seasons of recent history. The business owners of yesterday, today, and tomorrow can find support for their business at the Tarrant SBDC. If you are looking for best-advice, best-practices, or best-analysis, you can find that help and then some at the Tarrant SBDC. We are the business experts that thousands have benefitted from in the past and the present. Our commitment to your growth and survival is supported by a business framework funded by the Small Business Administration and the State of Texas, and an educational ecosystem hosted, funded, and supported by Tarrant County College.

Here are some of the services we offer: • Start-up Feasibility Analysis • Cash Flow Analysis • Business Plan Development • Growth Planning • Industry and Market Research • Exit Strategies • Loan Package Development • And more… I have always said that “being an entrepreneur is not for the faint or the weak.” I believe that to be even truer today, but know that you draw strength from those around you like your Chamber and the Tarrant SBDC. Call today (817-5152603) and ask to speak with an advisor. Rodney H. Johnson Director, Tarrant SBDC ntsbdc.org
