Managing Director’s Corner

The sun is out and the summer season is in full swing! It has been a very busy summer here at Reunion Resort & Club and we are already looking forward to fall, not only for the cooler temperatures which are perfect for golf, but also for the reopening of our 17th and 18th holes on our Nicklaus Course. We are excited to have an artist rendition of the Nicklaus course renovation. The plans have been submitted and approved by the Nicklaus design team. The renovation has consisted of moving the holes 17 and 18 and resizing the practice area. The 18th hole was the first to begin renovation and has had the furthest progress to this point. The new location of the hole was placed on the vacant area on the left side of the original location. Once a basic design was agreed upon, the earth movers began to shape out the new hole. All new irrigation was installed from the pump station and the first wave of sod installation has begun. Some of the features of the 18th hole will include: • Par 5 • 3 fairway bunkers • 3 greens bunkers that will slope down from the green • Waste area on the left side of the hole The 17th hole was placed on the left side of the original location. Renovation of this hole required reshaping the existing hole before constructing a new one. Currently the new hole is shaped and irrigation is being installed. Features of the 17th hole will include: • Par 4

• 1 fairway bunker

• 2 greens bunkers

The practice area is currently being shaped as well. We were able to maintain a full size practice range and only reduce the overall width of the range. The practice areas will include: • Driving range • Practice bunker

• Back and front range tees • Large putting green

• Chipping green

In addition to the practice area a new pro shop is planned to be built near the 18th green and accessible to the practice putting greens. An event lawn is also planned near the pro shop to generate more opportunities for Members and guests.

Father’s Day / US Open Scramble This year’s Fathers Day Scramble we had a total of 5 teams that played on the Watson course. The same as last year, competing teams were able to pick a professional from the US Open field, and combine the professional’s final round score in the US Open with their team score from the scramble.

Rafferty Rafferty Rafferty Staskiel Jordan Speith

The results were as follows: Greenstein Hobbs Ingram Ingram Louis Oosthuizen 58.8 + 67 = 125.8

Congratulations to the team of Sue Greenstein, Trudy Hobbs, Clare Ingram, and Kevin Ingram for not only a great pick, but also an outstanding performance!

57.4 + 69 = 126.4

AN UPDATE FROM A REUNION MEMBER Reunion Member Shannon Aubert Carries Impressive Golf Resume Stanford freshman and Reunion Member Shannon played a key role in Stanford’s NCAA women’s team championship in May by going 3-0 in match play. Aubert’s help that spring day, helped Stanford win the title; it was the highlight of her young, brilliant career. Stanford had never won a national title in women’s golf despite the presence of prodigy Michelle Wie. Aubert has had the support of LPGA Hall of Famer Annika Sorenstam dating back to when the family lived in Orlando and practiced at the Annika Academy where she used Sorenstam’s former coach, Henri Reis for the past six years. Sorenstam said “I’ve know her for quite some time as she was really our original Annika Academy Elite junior. She works very hard and is a lot of fun off the course.”

Tiger Woods mentioned after a practice round at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place, Washington, “I had a great time playing with Shannon; she is a very talented player and a solid student.” gath erings | 7

Aubert, a 19-year-old French native, also has qualified for two U.S Women’s Opens, was a three-time Rolex All-American, won the Dixie Amateur and International Spanish Ladies Amateur in 2013, has played on the French national team since 2009, and in May, she went 3-0 as match play was used in the women’s NCAA Golf Championship for the first time.

Jose Baez The Banquet Team Does it Again – Jose Baez Selected for June MERP Award! Jose Baez, Reunion Resort & Club Banquet Captain, was named June’s MERP award winner on July 17 at the Member/Manager Reception. Jose has been with Reunion in the same role since August 2010. Jose received a number of nominations. One read “Jose is always friendly to all of us Members and willing to go the extra mile to please us. He makes sure his staff is doing their jobs as well. He fully understands what “customer satisfaction“ is all about. At every Member Reception, he is quick to acknowledge the Members with a nice greeting and a welcome smile. And, when asked for a special request, he responds immediately without hesitation.”

The Member Employee Recognition Program “MERP” gives Members the opportunity to recognize deserving Reunion employees. Every outlet has ballots available for you to nominate and describe why you think the employee should be the next winner. Remember to take advantage of this opportunity and let them know we notice and appreciate their efforts to make us happy to be here at Reunion. Although only one employee receives this monthly award, all of the employees nominated receive peer and management recognition at special employee breakfasts throughout the year. You can submit a ballot for an employee who has demonstrated exceptional service at any time – not just within the month the service was performed. MERP ballots are available at all Reunion outlets, click here to access and submit a ballot online or simply email the Reunion Membership Office at MERP@reunionresort.com. A call for nominations will also be sent by the Membership Office via email once per month to remind you to submit your choice(s) for the monthly MERP award.

Another commented, “Jose is a great asset to Reunion and deserves this award,” while a third indicated “Jose exemplifies the customer service ethic that this award was designed to award. Wish we had 20 more like him!”

Way to go, Jose!

Inside T H E L I N E S

Covering the Line In doubles there are certain shots that you are responsible for and then there are those that you have an opportunity with. In this article, we will discuss the shots that the net person is responsible for. These shots can be broken down into three main shots; the first of these shots is the body volley. The body volley is considered to be one of the most difficult volleys as it is being hit directly at you. A lot of tennis players think initially that it should be taken as a forehand (usually their strongest shot), but in carefully looking at it, the shot should actually be taken as a backhand; by doing so you avoid jamming your body with your own elbow. Remember, a body shot is a defensive one anyway so there is no need for the “stronger” side to be hitting it. The second shot that they are responsible for would be the short overhead. A short overhead is one in which the net player moves back no more than three steps

back. The reason being is that if you take more than three steps you are now too far off the net, plus the shot you will be hitting is most likely behind you at this point. Simply call out “switch” and let your partner run over and hit the easier shot. The last shot that the net player is responsible for is the down the line. This is the most important of them all. If a shot goes down the line past the net player then there is no way that the doubles team has a chance of making the shot. The net player needs to make sure that as the ball goes wider on the other side of the court that they too move wider to cover the line on their side of the court. If you don’t move over to cover the line then the line shot for your opponent actually grows and becomes easier to hit it past you. The only remaining shot for the net player is the middle volley, also known as a poach. The ball is purely an opportunity, a bonus if you will. If this ball goes past the net player untouched then there is no harm done because your partner will be there to make the shot.
