Dear Club Members: As promised, this will be one of many updates you will receive as we proceed with the plans to renovate our property for the improvement of Members and guests experience and further enhance our overall operation. We have met with several potential contractors who are submitting bids for the first renovation project, the Hammock House along with the new Lodge. I am sure you can imagine the details involved in such an extensive project. Our goal is to ensure our final product will meet all the criteria outlined and addressed throughout our meetings. To provide a more detailed update, Prem Devadas, President of Salamander Hotels & Resorts, will update members at the next Member & Manager’s Reception on Wednesday, August 12. The update will also include the progress on refurbishing Delfinos Restaurant and Lobby. Please RSVP your attendance to the August 12 Member & Manager’s Reception by Monday, August 10 to the Membership Office or through the Member Website on-line at www.theclubathammockbeach.com. For those Members unable to attend the update, we will be recording and uploading video to the Member website. Warm regards,

Tim Digby General Manager 3

Advisory Board of Governors Update, b y Pre si de n t B o b Van N o st rand

At our last ABOG meeting (June) there was considerable discussion about the results of the 2015 member survey. It was decided that each Committee chairperson would review the findings relative to their specific area and then have their committee address the most significant issues through the creation of action plans. Upon finalization – I will communicate those plans to all of you. We thank everyone for their thoughtful input.

As are most of our club membership, ABOG is extremely interested in the status of the lodge project and it is a regular agenda item on every ABOG meeting. At the June meeting Tim Digby gave us the following update: • Planning process continues on the new Lodge and site tours with construction companies have been conducted. •H ammock House – drawings are complete and one bid has been submitted; waiting on two additional bids and anticipate starting in August with a 90 day completion timeframe.

The Board expressed disappointment at the Hammock House timetable compared to the initial projections and it was agreed by Management that they need to communicate to members an updated and realistic timetable for the project. Rest assured this topic will be on every ABOG agenda for the next several years and we have asked Tim to use the member-manager meetings to keep everyone informed of both progress and delays. Initial member use of the new club website has been extremely impressive, with a total of 538 individual members registering at the new site in the first month of operation. All club e-blasts now contain links to the site – and member feedback has been very good with high praise for the ability to make reservations at both the Atlantic Grille AND Delfinos! While on the subject of e-blasts, hopefully you’ve noticed that on those announcing Member Manager and Member Mixer events, we are now including information concerning the menus and themes such as barbeque, clambake and possibly even a luau. Food and Beverage is also looking into following up on the very successful Bourbon Tasting later this year with events targeting vodka and beer tastings. Lastly, the Social committee was thrilled by the response to the Kinky Boots offering – which exceeded available tickets and therefore the date was switched from a Sunday 2/28/18 to Tuesday 2/23/16 in order to accommodate as many sign ups as possible. Social is also looking into moving the dates around on some of the clubs annual events to allow for more members who may not be full time residents to participate.

Bunker Basics

By Wes Altice, Assistant Golf Professional Many players have a hard time getting out of bunkers because they fail to grasp the shot’s basic principal. The principal behind the shot is that the wedge never touches the ball. Instead, it enters the sand about an inch behind the ball and passes under it. The ball then flies out of the bunker riding on a cushion of sand. Rule: You can not ground your club in the sand when addressing the ball ,if you do, it is a 2 stroke penalty.

Set Up: 1. Grip: Hold the club using a finesse grip, with the V formed by the thumb and forefinger of your trail hand pointing at your sternum. 2. Stance: Make it wide—shoulder-width, at the very least—and turn both feet out about 45 degrees. Flex your knees so that it feels as though you’re sitting, or “settling” your weight into the front of both thighs, and that you’re balanced a little more over your front foot. 3. Club: As you widen and sit, lower your hands to just above knee height and allow the clubface to rotate open (clockwise for a right-handed golfer) as you do so. 4. Alignment: Square or slightly left of your target.

6

Bunker-Setup Test Set up as described above without a ball. Execute a bunker swing and splash sand onto the green. Check your sand divot and take note of where the club entered the sand relative to the position of your feet. Do this a few times, or until you have a good idea of where your typical entry point occurs

In Swing Fundamentals: 1. Slowly let the club face open during the backswing and limit the amount of lower body movement (arm swing only) 2. On the downswing let the club pick up speed gradually and THUMP the sand a 2 behind the ball. 3. The top speed of the club should feel like it happens a foot after the ball. This allows you to use the clubs bounce properly.

Think Like An Outfielder When Hitting An Overhead by Tennis Director, Gene Paul Lascano

When executed correctly, the overhead is one of the most lethal shots in tennis. It is also one of the most under practiced shots in the game. One thing that is commonly overlooked when hitting an overhead is the use of the non-dominant arm. Keeping the non-dominant arm up (almost pointing to the sky) helps with proper shoulder position and balance. More importantly, it is critical in helping players track or find the ball. When receiving a lob, think like a baseball player in the outfield receiving a pop fly. One of the first things they do is raise their glove straight up and in front of them. Once they get a sense of where the ball is, they position themselves not only under the ball, but slightly behind it before catching it. Same idea when hitting an overhead: turn your shoulders and then quickly get your left arm (for righties) up using it as a guide in helping you position yourself for the shot.

On overheads, always remember... if you can catch it, you can hit it! 9
