Dear Club Members: We hope you will take advantage of the many events planned for the upcoming Independence Holiday to create a wonderful celebration for everyone. On Thursday, July 2nd, the Managers of Hammock Beach are hoping to exact revenge on the Members in the 10th Annual Members vs. Managers Softball Tournament. Kids Crew has several days of activities planned from Boogie Board Races, Family Campfire, Wii Mario Kart Tournament, games and Movie on the Lawn for kids and parents. All our restaurants will be open and additional dining opportunities have been added, such as a Texas BBQ on the 3rd Under the Tent on the Champions Lawn and featuring live entertainment. On the 4th, “Pasta Creations” dining will be in the Atlantic Ballroom and on the 5th, the “Chef’s Carving Board” will be available again, in the Atlantic Ballroom. Please come out to watch the fireworks scheduled for Friday, July 3rd at approximately 9pm on the Champions Event Lawn. The Annual Red White & Blue Golf Tournament will take place on July 4th on the Conservatory Course for Golf members. All these events and activities can be found on-line on the recently launched member website located at www.theclubathammockbeach.com. If you have not logged on, please do so and familiarize yourself with this new and much improved website specially designed and created to keep you informed with the added convenience of on-line tee times, court times, member event reservations and links to Open Table for Atlantic Grille and Delfinos restaurant reservations as well as the Mind Body link for fitness class registration. Advisory Board of Governors Update, b y Pre si de n t B o b Van N o st rand

Well summer is here! Some of our seasonal members have returned north and your ABOG has moved to its summer schedule with meetings every other month. Committees still meet monthly – working through issues and adding events to enhance your membership. Let me highlight two issues that have been the topic of substantial committee and ABOG times over the past few months.

You’ve likely seen the recent e-blast about the Tennis policy concerning guests. The issue was first raised back in January 2015 at the Sports & Leisure meeting as a concern because of the recent significant growth in tennis in both GVTL League and individual play. Our club documents have always included language for both golf and tennis that limit individual guests to six plays per calendar year – but in both areas excess capacity made it unnecessary to enforce that rule. For Golf, that changed about three years ago when the golf personnel started tracking guest names and plays as the number of golf rounds increased. At the April ABOG Sports & Leisure meeting, Gene Paul our new Tennis Director raised the question of whether the time had come to limit guest of member play in order to protect court times for all members. The committee, including a significant number of tennis players, reviewed the existing club document and decided unanimously to recommend to Management that the rule be enforced on a go forward basis effective July 1, 2015. That meant that each guest of member would be limited to six plays from July 1 through year end for 2015. Recognizing that enforcement of this rule would impact existing members, the enforcement was phased in to allow those who had repetitive guests time to find alternate solutions including rotating play amongst the facilities where their guests were members. Club Management reviewed this with member input and approved the ABOG recommendation not to penalize anyone but to preserve the use of the club facilities for their paying members. The second area I want to highlight is golf, an area where I usually avoid in these articles as it concerns only about 1/3 of our membership. In particular I want to explain why in 2014 the golf committee, ABOG and Club Management decided to implement a rule that for ALL Club Golf Tournaments we would use the lowest individual GHIN handicap instead of the golfer’s current handicap. To soften the impact of this change, we decided to use 100% of the lowest 12 month handicap as opposed to the traditional 80% of the current use. That means an individual with both a current and year low handicap of 10 would play as a 10 instead of an 8 under the old rule.

6.

4

For those non golfers still reading this, a golfer records all scores and the GHIN system takes the lowest 10 rounds of the last 20 played to compute a handicap. The intent of handicaps is to allow two individuals to compete, with the difference in skill level being accounted for by the difference in handicap. So why did we make this change: to level and protect the playing field to avoid having the Handicap committee review players handicap histories prior to each tourney to have all handicaps reflect the skill level a golfer HAD exhibited Golf’s dirty word is SANDBAGGING – defined simply as inflating your handicap to gain a competitive advantage, sometimes arrived at through oversight or error but can also be a product of willful intent. By adopting this new rule we essentially eliminate any such concerns and the need to hold the review. Unfortunately this rule has resulted in negative feedback so I want to highlight the underlying data that led to its implementation. While the decision was based on 2014 data – I will use the 2015 data which is more current and actually very close to the 2014 data. In the 2015 Member- Member tournament we had 117 members playing – our largest member turnout for any event. Of those 117 players here is the impact of the rule:

No handicap change - 29% or 34 individuals

GAINED handicap strokes – 63% or 74 individuals

LOST handicap strokes – 8% or 9 individuals

When you look at the data it suggests the impact of this rule change was minimal though the intense reaction to it suggests a strong misunderstanding of the rule. The majority of strokes gained were 1 or 2. One participant in our recent Club Championship Stableford flight voiced objection to the rule – not aware that he was actually benefitting by one stroke through its application. If anyone wants to discuss further, please feel free to inquire of me or Brad Hauer. Hopefully this article will help correct some of those perceptions!

Driver Tips

Wes Altice, Assistant Golf Professional Research has shown the most efficient way to strike the driver is to impact the ball from the inside and with an upward/ascending direction (the clubhead must be travelling away from the ground). This encourages a higher trajectory, reduces spin and leads to more roll once the ball hits the ground.

1. Set Up: Posture • Drill – make a tail http://youtu.be/vMCrZl_zVsw • As in the picture to the left, the feet are fairly wide, about shoulder width apart. If your stance is too narrow, your head will tend to move too far off the ball during the backswing, a too wide stance and it makes it more difficult to rotate your body on the backswing and downswing. • The spine should be tilting away from the target a little. • Finally, you should have about 60% pressure in the lead foot. This helps give you something to push off of when you start your backswing and move your pressure into you trail foot.

Ball Position • In line with the left shoulder or left heel • Tee the ball high. You should have a sense that you are behind the ball and are preparing to “swing uphill”. As you can see in the picture on the left, Adam Scott is hitting up on the ball but his pressure is mostly on his left foot. This ensures he is getting maximum power into the back of the ball.
