Advisory Board of G o v e r n o r s U p d a t e, b y C har l e s Ke r r,Pre si d e n t

The Holiday season and the end of the year are quickly approaching. This is the time of year that our part time members return and the Club events kick into high gear. For those of you who have had a chance to pick up a copy of the highly coveted 4th quarter Member Activity Guide, you’ll know what I’m talking about. If you don’t already have your copy, please stop by the Membership Office and pick one up. Even though the Advisory Board of Governors has only been meeting on a bi-monthly schedule, the ABOG Committees have continued to meet monthly, or as required. Each Committee has been working on some interesting topics related to their area of responsibility. I’d like to mention a few that should be of interest to the members. A very important function of the Member Relations Committee is to manage the annual election process of new ABOG members. For those of you who have been attending the monthly MemberManager functions, I’ve been asking for volunteers to run for the Board for several months. I’m happy to say that I wasn’t totally ignored. We currently have 9 candidates to fill the 6 positions of the current Board members whose terms are ending at the end of December 2014. The Club Membership office will issue the slate of candidates including their credentials on November 1, as part of the second notice of elections. The election will be conducted by online ballot. The ballot will be provided by email from the Club Membership office. Members are entitled to one vote per household membership. Each household will be asked to vote for six candidates from the ballot and return it by November 17th. The votes will be counted and the elected Board members will be announced at the December Board meeting.

were a significant 360 responses showing just how important the Fitness Center is to members. Another note, the respondents were split almost equally between men and woman. Thanks to everyone who participated. The survey has proven to be a great tool for the Subcommittee and Fitness Management, helping them identifies the areas and classes most important to the members. Sports & Leisure continues to promote and improve the monthly scheduled Bocce get togethers. Our goal is to have enough Bocce participation in order to develop a league at the beginning of 2015.

The Food & Beverage Committee has done a great job of working with the Club to improve the food offering at both our Member Socials and the Member-Manager events. Hopefully, their efforts have been noticed by the members. The Committee also advises on changes to the quarterly Member Menus at Delfinos and the Atlantic Grill. The current challenge of the Committee is finding a compromise with the Club to minimize the impact of the rise in the food cost that occurred this year. Since their inception, the Member Menus have been a very popular part of Club membership. The goal of the Committee is to keep the menu offerings as affordable as possible while maintaining the level of quality that we have come to appreciate. The current Member Menu format will continue through the end of the year. Food & Beverage was able to offer a variety of options to the Club for consideration. Any changes made by the Club will be announced at the beginning of 2015. Hopefully, you’ve had a chance to appreciate the quality and variety of the entertainment brought to Hammock Beach by the Social Committee. The Committee used their meetings in August and September to work on finding and booking the entertainment for next year. Coming up in the next couple of months, for example, are Homecoming Kick-off Party with the Cynergy Band, Homecoming Member Mixer with a Beatles Tribute Band and the Holiday Mixer with the Diggin’ in Dreamland Band. In September, the Committee received a presentation from Penguin Entertainment on the range of talent available in 2015. Along with the talent in Penguin’s portfolio, the Committee is also looking at some great local groups from St. Augustine. There are a lot of excellent acts being lined up for our events next year.

The Golf Committee has been working with Brad to revamp the activities calendar to show all of the upcoming tournaments and course maintenance. To help better utilize member tee times, the Committee has suggested that the names of members holding slots with less than four players be shown on the online tee sheet. This would allow single golfers to see which members are playing at a given time and possibly book their tee times with the other members. Also, the Committee has asked Bob Van Nostrand to work with Hammock Dunes on revitalizing the Hammock Cup. The goal is to make the event more popular by changing the format to reduce the number of days required for play and allow players to choose their partners for the event. The Golf Committee has also been active in coming up with new events for couples, including a Sadie Hawkins format for twilight play. By the time you read this, we hope to have had a successful first annual Golf – Tennis Challenge. After members have had a chance to become familiar with the format, we expect the G-T Challenge will be a popular event on next year’s calendar.

The Fitness Subcommittee, under Sports & Leisure, published a Fitness Survey that was eblasted to the general membership. The Committee was pleased to have received a substantial number of very useful responses from members. Of the 600+ beach club members, there

As always, the Advisory Board of Governors look forward to hearing from you and discussing any ideas that you feel would enhance everyone’s Club experience. You can contact us by email, as shown on the member website, or, come by and visit with us at any of the member events.

TENNIS TIP

The 3 Volleys: BLOCK, PUNCH, SWING by Gene Paul Lascano, Head Tennis Professional

The volley is considered one of the easiest shots in the game of tennis, but it can also be the trickiest. Knowing the type of volley to use in a given situation is the tough part. To make things easier, remember that volleys fall into one of these 3 categories: the block, the punch, or the swing.

In the event the incoming shot is coming with medium speed, do your best to punch through your volley. On a punch volley, you can increase the length of your backswing by simply turning your shoulders (photo 2).

The main difference between the block, punch, and swing volleys, is how big your backswing is. The key variable used to determine how long or short your backswing should be on your volley is the speed of the approaching ball.

Next time you’re at the net, do your best to adjust your backswing to the speed of the incoming ball and that will help you make the right volley--block, punch, or swing!

On a slow and higher ball, increase your shoulder turn and also take your racquet back slightly (photo 3). This will allow you to move the racquet forward with a little more energy giving you more of an offensive swing volley.

For example, if the ball is coming at you really fast, you should use the pace of the incoming ball and block it back. Many times this is more of a “reflex” shot where your racquet’s movement is extremely limited (photo 1).

Spa Member Menu

by Thor Holm, Director of Spa, Recreation & Fitness I am hoping that each of you will take the time to read this article to better understand what I believe is one of your most misunderstood and valuable benefits; Your Member Menu. The services offered in the Member Menu are offered Monday through Thursday throughout the year. In addition, Non Resident Members are offered Member Menu pricing on Sundays. I believe that this is a misunderstood benefit due to its relatively poor performance as part of the Member Survey. This benefit was not part of your original membership agreement. It was implemented at the urging of your ABOG and was at first offered on Mondays and Tuesdays and only through the fall and winter months. The following is a comparison of pricing of services that you can find at several local Day Spa Establishments compared to you Member Menu pricing

Spa Name Swedish Facial Pedicure Manicure White Orchid $96* $102* $57.60* $33.60* Europa $78* $78* $51.60 $26.40 Allure $79.20* $75.60 $60* $24 Hammock Beach $65** $60** $35** $25** *Includes 20% gratuity

**Includes 20% of Hammocks retail price

The chart above shows the cost of a service plus a 20% gratuity for all of the establishments for reasons of comparison because your member menu pricing includes gratuity. You will notice that Hammock Beach pricing has a double asterisk because the service charge is actually based on our retail price for these services. In other words our Service Professionals who perform a Swedish massage for a Resort Guest that costs $132* get the same amount of compensation when they do a Swedish Massage for you for $65. Hopefully this sheds some light on what a great value our members have here.
