The Ice Bucket Challenge has taken the country by storm and the Grand Golf Resorts is no exception. For us, it all started with The Valspar Championship team challenging the Innisbrook team who in turn challenged the Reunion team and here we are, the Hammock Beach team being challenged by the Reunion team in the Ice Bucket Challenge, raising funds and awareness for ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease). On Monday, August 19, Twenty five Hammock Beach employees, including yours truly, took the Ice Bucket Challenge on the Champions Event Lawn and made a donation to ALS. We also challenged the Salamander Resort & Spa team in Middleburg, Virginia. Clean it and Fix it Program continues – the Indoor Pool was closed for 2 days last month and the decking pressure washed and painted and maintenance items completed. Also, the Hammock House was pressure washed, painted and maintenance items completed and the Spa Garden (adjacent to the Indoor Pool) was also closed for pressure washing and painting. We will keep you posted as projects are completed and new projects are planned. Cheers,

Tim Digby General Manager

There are several golf related events coming up that should be a lot of fun. On September 12th, a Big Break Skills challenge will be held at Conservatory. Golf members will compete with each other in a unique variety of skills. The first annual Couples Invitational will be help in November. The format for the 3-day event will be posted by the Membership office. A brand new event, called the Golf/ Tennis Challenge, is in development for October. It will be a chance for golf members and tennis players to compete against each other for the right to display the Challenge Cup at the winning sport’s facility. More information will be available in the near future.

b y Char l es Ker r, Pr e si d e n t Summer at Hammock Beach is winding down. Hopefully, aside from the rain, heat and humidity, it was enjoyable for each of you. Since my last update, the ABOG committees have been busy working with Club Management on a variety of items and issues. As we transition into Fall, I want to share with you some the progress that’s been made on a few of those.

Sports and Leisure has created a subcommittee that will work directly with Spa Management on improvements to the spa and fitness areas of the Club. This committee is headed by Kathy Owens and will consist of several members who are passionate about improving this area of the Club. Bocce Ball officially starts on September 8th. Play will be held on the south tower pool deck starting at 5pm. Until there is enough interest to begin league formation, informal matches will continue on the second Monday of each month. If you’re interested, it’s not too late to get your own team of four players together. For now, it will be Bring Your Own Snacks and Beverages.

While this Summer’s almost daily afternoon rain was an inconvenience for Members and Resort Guests who wanted to enjoy outside activities, it was great for the golf courses. In July, the new golf carts FINALLY arrived. Their Visage GPS system is as good as advertised. Now that the golf members have had a chance to put the system through the paces, the advanced functions have been impressive. Players are now able to determine the yardage they need to hit to in order to set up their approach shot. To be able to visually see this on the GPS screen is a great help. For the golf staff, Visage allows them to see the location and pace of every cart on the course. If slow play is detected by the system, it alerts the staff and they can send a message directly back to the slow players. Another feature of the Visage system alerts players when they are too close to a restricted area. The system reduces the cart’s speed to 2 mph until the cart is driven out of the area. So, don’t be surprised when it happens to you around the greens. The scariest function is the one that allows Brad to control all of the carts from his cell phone.

Even though Bocce Ball is just getting started, Sports and Leisure has moved on to bringing Pickle Ball to Hammock Beach. Interest in the sport was brought to the Committee by several members who are already playing offsite at Matanzas Shores. Because the initial investment for courts is fairly high, the Committee contacted our local County Commissioner for help. He feels that there is a possibility that public access courts could be added to Bings Landing. The Club continues to have issues related to pool towels and use of the facilities by outsiders. While the wristband program was supposed to stop unauthorized use of the pools, it hasn’t had much effect at the indoor pool and lodge pool. Recently, Thor Holm had directed his staff to periodically patrol the pool areas and ask people to show their Club card as proof of identification. Although a great idea, enforcement by the staff doesn’t appear to be consistent. We have been told that, going forward, the pool staff will be more diligent in confirming the ID of visitors to the pools. So, while you should always carry your card at the resort, it is especially important to make sure you have it at the pools. A check-in

A bid to repair six bunkers on the Ocean Course has been submitted to Salamander for approval. Part of the scope covered by the bid will be to raise the floor of all the bunkers located near the lakes to height of several inches above the water level. This remedy should help keep the sand in those bunkers softer and more consistent.

Advisory Board of Governors ( A B O G ) U P D A T E

process at the Fantasy Pool Complex has helped reduce the number of towels being used to save chairs. If requested, members are allowed additional towels. It doesn’t matter where you go, guests coming down early and saving multiple chairs is a problem. In the future, if no activity is detected at a pool chair for 30 minutes, the staff has been told to remove any items and take them to lost and found. Jan Cullinane, Member Relations Chairperson, is investigating a weekend workshop series currently being offered in Ashville, NC. The program was developed by Dr. Ron Manheimer, a well known consultant in retirement planning. His workshops are designed to help seniors make the right retirement choices regardless of their age. A side benefit to the workshops is that they will draw people to Palm Coast and showcase the resort as an obvious retirement location. The presenters tracked attendees and found that, after attending the workshops in Ashville, several participants decided Ashville would be a great place to retire. The Committee looks at this idea as a great way to attract new resident members to the Club. From the Member Survey results, we saw that the Club’s Ambassador Program/ New Member/ Concierge Service was not fully understood or promoted as well as we had hoped it would be. As of this Summer, Ambassadors, with similar interests, are being assigned to new members to help them get to know the Club and the members as quickly as possible. The Membership Office has started a program called 30-60-90-180 Days follow up with new members. Lastly, non-resident members are beginning to utilize the concierge services offered by the Club. Services include sign-ups for golf, spa services, etc. Marianne Murphy also offers Notary Service to members when requested. Sometimes it seems that if you wanted to, you could spend every day of the week attending either a Social Committee or Food and Beverage event. In July, the Club presented a successful Aroma and Tasting Seminar. In late August, there was a Majestic Wine Tasting with pouring stations and small plates. This event was a miniature version of the huge wine and art festival held every January at the Club. Other upcoming events include The Ryder Cup of Beers, Footloose Dinner and Dance, and a Gallo Portfolio Tasting with small plates. If you’ve dined in Delfino’s you’ve probably heard that Chef Jason has been brought over to replace Chef Daniel. Jason is now in the process of developing a few of his own recipes for Delfino’s. With Jason’s transfer to Delfino’s, the Club has hired Chef John to oversee the kitchen at the Atlantic Grille. We look forward to having John establish himself at the Atlantic Grille. Also, Nick Brisk has left for another opportunity at a private club near Ormond. Nick was a real asset to the Club and he will be missed. In the interim, Robert McDonnell, Nick’s Assistant Manager, will step into the position and become our wine contact at the Club. The members of the ABOG are always interested in hearing from you about your experiences at the Club. Be it positive or negative, your input and suggestions help us represent you and the other members in the most effective way possible.

Golf Tip: Bow to the Right Knee for Added Power

by Brad Hauer, Director of Golf of Hammock Beach Losing a lot of distance lately? Then more than likely, you are losing your posture somewhere during the backswing. You could be straightening up in your knees or standing up in your waist. Either way, losing your posture will translate into losing power. If you feel like you’re losing your posture, try to have the sensation of slightly bowing to your right knee as your body is turning during the entire length of your backswing. The proper sensation will feel like your belly button is going to make a slight motion to the top part of your right knee.

Try this drill before you hit balls on the range to get a better feel for this power move. First, put your hands on your hips (1st photo), and then simply bend from the waist to your right knee (2nd photo). This drill will help you get the feeling of maintaining the proper powerful position that is required to add more distance to your shots.

Hole-in-One! Congratulations to Bernie Barczak on his Hole In One on the Ocean Course on August 12, 2014. He aced the 130 yard hole #17 using his 8 Iron.

As we enter the fall competitive season one way to improve is to add some variety to your game. If you work to add just one different shot or tactic to your game you will absolutely see dividends. If hard deep ground strokes are your strength then add a drop shot or lob to surprise and change the ball your opponent is expecting (and getting used to…). If tactically you typically serve and rally then add a serve/volley or return serve/ volley play to the mix to take away your opponents time and comfort. A great way to work on an individual stroke is to hit on our computerized ball machine. Just reserve a time and get out and work on adding a new weapon to your game. When working on a new tactic you of course need to practice in a game like environment. So get a game together and tell your group – “today I’m serving and volleying every first serve”. By forcing yourself to practice this new tactic repetitively you’ll gain the confidence to do it under match conditions. So…. if “variety is the spice of life…” add some to your game for this year’s season!

Shake it Up in September! by Thor Holm, Director of Spa, Recreation & Fitness We are two thirds of the way through this year and chances are things may be getting a little stale. We have recently added classes and given several new options but the best advice is to augment these classes with new activities with some adventure capital. With summer coming to a close we are about to experience what I believe are the two best months of weather we have all year. Beautiful sunny days but cooler nights and mornings that allow for more activity outdoors. Here are some suggestions for outdoor activities to shake things up.

Schedule effective 8/11/14. *Please check with the Fitness Center a week in advance for water fitness times and location.

1) A fitness walk on the beach. Plan a walk on the beach and head north from the main walkover. Start by a deliberate pace for 15 minutes so before any exercise you have great blood flow. After the first 15 minutes, stop, face the water and do 20 squats. Don’t worry if anybody sees you the next time you walk that way they will probably be doing squats too. Continue walking until you recover then stop and face the water and do 20 jumping jacks. Continue walking until you recover face the water and do stationary lunges 10 with the right leg 10 with the left. After 30 minutes turn around and head south continuing these exercises along the way until you are 45 minutes into your walk. At the 45 minute mark just walk deliberately the rest of the way back. At the walkover do some simple stretching. 2) Ride a bike somewhere new. All too often we ride the same road way and fail to see what is around us that can help us to enjoy the experience. If there is anything the area offers in abundance it is trails. Ride from here but pick a new trail. Have a distance in mind and a pace but stay alert along the way and you will be amazed by what you see and learn as well as get some great exercise. 3) Try something in or on the water. Whether it is kayaking, Stand Up Paddle Board, body surfing swimming or aqua aerobics the fall offers a wonderful opportunity to try these activities with little or no one else competing with you for a spot. You will use your muscles in new ways and see our area from a whole new perspective.

So shake it up this September you will be glad that you did!
