Advisory Board of Governors Update, b y Pre si de n t B o b Van N o st rand

Well ABOG 2015 is now in full swing, with the committees having held two meetings and our second ABOG meeting scheduled for February 23. I indicated in my last report that I was going to keep you apprised of what we’re working on, so let me start there:

Golf Committee Working on re-instituting Golf Talk Live where golf members spend an evening socializing while listening to a knowledgeable speaker on a variety of golf related topics. In addition, committee members have been assigned to each member tournament to assure better communications between membership and the various departments that support each tournament.

Social Committee Working on providing members with a variety of “off campus” events such as concerts, plays, art festivals and even shopping experiences – all with included luxury transportation to venues in Jacksonville, Orlando and St Augustine. Initial research shows some substantial discounts are available to groups which can offset the transportation costs. Look for a short Survey Monkey in the very near future as we collect member feedback on the types of events that have the most appeal.

Food and Beverage Committee While many F&B events are already planned , many require limited participation of 15-30 members due to the nature of the event (Cooking with Chef, Wine Tastings, Bourbon University) so the committee is looking into adding events that can accommodate larger numbers of members. In addition, the committee will be more involved in monthly menus for Member-Manager and Member Socials. This will not involve actual menu item selections, but rather targeting themed gatherings that feature a specific type of cuisine such as Mexican or Italian and advertise that theme in advance of the event.

Member Relations Committee They are busy reviewing the annual membership survey and updating it to meet our needs for 2015. With input from the committee, the Club is currently looking into a new website that will provide a single source for members to interact with all club amenities – golf tee times, tennis court times, fitness classes, reservations for all club events and restaurants. Improving the effectiveness of club communications is undergoing analysis based on inputs from other clubs.

Sports and Leisure Committee Having the broadest expanse of member activities of all the ABOG committees, they have been concentrating on providing focused input to the Club on member needs in the areas of Fitness, Tennis and the Pools. Expanding fitness class size, requiring sign in sheets and rearranging equipment are aimed at expanded utilization of those classes. In the tennis area they are addressing sign up issues and will be working on creating a policy that balances individual and league play with lessons. So what will be the key issues for this month’s ABOG meeting? There has been considerable discussion and feedback from many members regarding the role the ABOG should undertake relative to the construction of the new Lodge. While it will be a highly discussed issue at the February meeting, I can tell you now that the role will include two key provisions:

• Promises made to garner member support will be promises kept • Disruption of activities during construction will be minimized, as much as possible

Obviously there will be other areas where your ABOG will be involved, but the above are critical from the members’ perspective. Your ABOG did not take a formal position nor provide any testimony either in favor or in opposition to the Lodge proposal because we too had individuals who were on both sides of the issue or undecided. Now that the County Commissioners have voted to approve the project – it is incumbent on all of us members to set aside all our differences and unite to make this project work best for the entire Club membership. Lastly, despite talking about the issues of belated and lack of RSVPs since early 2014, the issue is getting worse not better. The last two member events saw RSVP counts in the 175 range after the RSVP deadline and then the actual event had over 300 attendees. This is not a cost issue – it is necessary to provide a positive member experience accompanied by appropriate food and seating counts to the Club. Your ABOG will use the February meeting to provide the club with a recommendation to implement unified RSVP procedures to try and remedy this ongoing problem.

To Our Dear Hammock Beach Resort Friends & Supporters, The Christmas dust has finally settled. We are now back at our headquarters and on our way to gearing up for another year of focusing on the needs of the families here in Flagler County. Because of your generosity and the incredible support of our community, we were able to provide 96 families (295 children) a Christmas day to remember! With the enormous help of Penn Walker and his Associates at Publix in Palm Harbor, we were able to provide the perfect size turkey, dressing, gravy, rolls, butter, cranberry jelly, fresh vegetables, canned vegetables, salad fixings with dressing and a choice of apple and/ or pumpkin pie with whipped cream and who can forget the cookie dough for those Christmas Eve treats! Each child received the requested selection of gifts/toys, clothing including the needed outerwear and special needs; along with a personalized Christmas stocking filled with personal hygiene items and some goodies, games, crayons, etc… 127 children received the bicycle they requested which brought the parents to tears! It was an incredible year with some wonderful volunteers to help with everything. We wanted to say Thank You so very much to all the residents of the Hammock Beach & the Associates that helped us make this all possible. Everything you do is greatly appreciated. God bless you and may you have a joyous year!

Most Sincerely,

Nadine, Ed, Joyce, Kim, Lori, Charlie, Karen, Maria & Lori Christmas Come True Charity If you would like to follow what fun events we have coming up or have any questions, please contact us at: 1399 N Oceanshore Blvd., Flagler Beach • 386.569.4429 Christmascometrue.org • Christmascometrue@gmail.com

The Double Overlap Grip

by Brad Hauer, Director of Golf at The Conservatory You’ll find this month’s tip useful with your chip shots and short wedge shots Do you find yourself hitting your chips or short wedges too long? When you have the wedge in your hand do you feel you’re going to leave the shot real short or hit it over the green? The next time you get to practice, try using the double overlap grip. This grip is a sneaky way to get the right hand out of the swing. This grip is a drill that you could actually use on the golf course. The double overlap grip simply puts the pinky and ring finger of your right hand over the index and pointer finger of your left hand, as shown in this picture. By executing this grip, it makes the right hand more passive and puts more emphasis on pulling with the left arm. People that hit a chip or pitch shot too hard get the right hand very active in the shot, thus resulting in hitting way past the intended target. Next time you’re at the practice range, try this grip and I’ll bet you will start developing a better touch around the greens!

Congratulations to Mel Haught on his Hole-in-One!

TENNIS TIP

Do you play from “No-Man’s Land”? By Gene Paul Lascano, Tennis Director

The “No-Man’s Land” as it is offered referred to as, is the area of the tennis court between the baseline and service line. One of the most frequent mistakes players make is standing in this area too long. Often, players wander into this part of the court unknowingly and don’t realize it until they’ve lost the point. One of the main reasons to avoid staying in the “No Man’s Land” is because that is where most balls bounce during play. If you’re caught standing inside the “No Man’s Land” and the opponent hits their shot deep, you may be caught hitting off your back leg (figure 1). Not only will you be totally off balance, but your shot will have very little power. Another common situation that occurs when a player strays into the “No-Man’s Land” is they get caught having to make a difficult deep court volley (figure 2). Volleys made from this far back in the court are relatively ineffective as you are forced to hit from a very low position. Ideally, it is best to position and set up your points from behind the baseline (figure 3). Even if your opponent hits with good depth, you would only have to marginally give ground. In the event that your opponent hits short, move forward and hit an aggressive shot (figure 4). From there, you can advance towards the net and position yourself IN the service boxes for an offensive volley. Remember, it is fine to move into the “No-Man’s Land” to hit a ball, but the key element is not to remain there. Do your best to appropriately position yourself before and after your shots and conquering the “No-Man’s Land” will be no sweat!
