Advisory Board of G o v e r n o r s U p d a t e,

b y Pre s ide n t B o b Van N o strand As the Advisory Board of Governors (ABOG) gets ready for its first meeting of 2015 in January, I want to share with all of you some of my thoughts for this year’s focus.

First - the previously announced Chairpersons of the 5 ABOG committees are all new to that specific role. I did this because I am a strong believer that new people bring new perspectives and ideas with them. I also challenged each ABOG Committee to add 2-3 new non-ABOG committee members to continue to expand on that belief. We continue to look for volunteers for the various ABOG committees to help fulfill this objective - and being on a committee involves only about 2-4 hours per month on average. Second- while each Committee will be setting individual goals and objectives for 2015 at their initial 2015 meetings, I have given each of them a general objective to recommend, gain approval and actually implement two new activities or major changes to existing activities. Many activities have had little change for several years and we continue to get feedback concerning staleness. Two examples from 2014 of what my expectations are would be the establishment of Bocce as a member activity as well as the Inaugural Couples Invitational Golf Tournament. We have averaged over 30 members for each of the four 2014 Bocce sessions and 88 for the Couples Invitational in November, of which 44 were guests of members. A member last year wrote an email to an ABOG committee raising certain concerns. I personally responded to that email acknowledging the issue and while stating we were still working the issue, I went into some length to advise the member of what we had as potential solutions. The member wrote me back and said (paraphrasing somewhat) “All we ever hear from ABOG is what you accomplish after the fact, and by then we already know about it from other sources. Why don’t you talk about what you’re working on? “ Point well taken - and I pledge we will do more of that in 2015. With that said - we revised our ABOG bylaws in Dec 2014 and inserted new sections regarding Conflicts of Interest and Confidentiality of ABOG and ABOG Committee discussions. Unless an ABOG decision is final or we have decided to seek member input - we will not permit dissemination of ABOG and Committee detailed discussions so we don’t even appear to be feeding the ABOG rumor mill. I’ll apprise you of what we are working on, but many

details will await finalization before release. Our Member website (hammockbeach.net) has the new ABOG by-laws as well as official minutes of all the ABOG meetings for your reading pleasure. You’ll likely be surprised to see some of the issues ABOG is involved in. Lastly this brings me to the issue of member Communications. While some of you may feel deprived of additional club emails - many feel over whelmed even with the ability to subscribe or unsubscribe to any email distribution. Let me summarize the current club E blast distribution: • Every Tuesday an E Blast goes out to over 1300 members on all activities and issues other than golf • Every Thursday an E Blast goes out to 530 golf members on GOLF only issues and activities • Every Friday an E Blast goes out to over 1300 members on Tennis, Kids activities and Spa Touchpoints and all subject matters that are essentially follow-ups to Tuesday and Thursday In the last 30 days from the date of this writing, the Club has sent out 18,593 emails. Of those only 48.4% were opened and only 24.6% of those opened were “clicked-on” for more information. Our follow up E Blast on Friday January 16th contained 15 specifics areas that could be clicked excluding all the Club email response clicks available. So in 30 days we send out more follow up emails than the total of all the standard distributions. Why you may ask? Because as Club Members, the majority of us wait until the very last minute to sign up for EVERYTHING even though we now have a printed quarterly Activity Guide which outlines ALL the activities and dates for the next three months.

Case in point: the Member Manager reception on Wednesday January 14th. Membership takes a count of the RSVPs and puts a food order in the Friday before to alert the Food and Beverage people to the amount of food they need to prepare. On Friday the count was in the 160s so an order was placed for 200. By Monday afternoon, the total had grown to over 210 and the final count exceeded 240. Thankfully the food order was changed by Marianne Murphy - and we didn’t run out of food as we have in the past. But why do we wait so long to RSVP? Think about the above in terms of your having a Thursday dinner for friends. You send out invites and the Friday before you have 10 guests coming and plan accordingly - then from Monday to Thursday your count slowly escalates to 16. What would your reaction be? There are other consequences of late replies as well - the Club has come to anticipate this and waits until the last minute to cancel activities for failing to reach a number needed to go forward with the event. This happened with this years Parent - Child Golf Tournament - cancelled for low response even after some grandchildren had come to visit in order to participate. How would you like to explain that to your child or grandchild? Enough lecturing - the Club, ABOG and our members need to come up with a better way to blend the various communication tools E Blasts, Activity Guides, Paper Events Flyers and our website to reverse the current trends and make communications more valuable and responses more timely. This won’t be an easy task, and might even come with some pain like strictly adhered “respond by dates,” but it is a goal worth pursuing for 2015.

Hoping everyone has both a Healthy and Happy 2015.

Relax the Arms For More Distance by Brad Hauer, Director of Golf

Does your plan of hitting an extra long drive backfire more than succeed? Usually when we’re trying to get a little more distance out of our drives we end up creating more tension in our swing, resulting in slower clubhead speed and less distance. If you find this to be the case in your golf swing, try the following tips. First, try producing less pressure and tension in your grip. Gripping the club too tightly will cause your forearms and shoulders to become restricted, thus resulting in a shorter turn in the backswing. The grip pressure is similar to taking a banana, peeling it, and gripping the banana without putting any fingerprints on it. When done properly, you will feel more relaxed in your arms when gripping the club in your set up. Secondly, at the top or completion of your backswing, eliminate tension in your arms by making them feel as if they are wet noodles. Staying relaxed at this point of the swing will help you sync your arms with your body efficiently. Working the two tips above will help create more clubhead speed without swinging harder at the ball and get the little added distance when you really need it. As always, if you’re struggling with your golf game, please contact our golf professional staff to set up private lessons. We are more than happy to help you with the improvement of your golf game. A private lesson program can help you focus your thoughts on sound fundamentals that will help improve your game

TENNIS TIP

Get your eyes at the level of the ball on the volley. By Harry Gilbert, Director of Tennis

When playing the net it is important to see the ball all the way into your racquet particularly on low, dipping shots. A good thing to remember is to get your eyes level with the racquet head. This will insure that you “track it to the racquet” and result in firmer, better placed volleys.

Without a target you will never hit the mark by Thor Holm, Director of Spa, Recreation & Fitness February is National Heart Month so it is a good time to check on how often we are focusing on how our heart is responding to the exercise we offer. I often watch members and guests use our cardio equipment and never once utilize the best tool to determine the efficacy of their efforts, the heart rate monitor. Our heart is a pump with parts that can frankly wear out if they are made to over work. The majority of time we are at rest so let’s look at what the difference is between a well-conditioned heart and one

that is not. According to the American Heart Association the average resting heart rate for children 10 and older to the elderly is between 60-100 beats per minute. Athletes average between 40-60 beats per minute. So for the sake of argument let’s split the difference in each category and compare beats per year based on a person who has a resting heart rate that is 80 beats per minute and a person who has a resting heart rate of 50 beats per minute. In a year the person whose resting heart rate is 80 bpm will beat 15,768,000 more time than that of the person whose resting heart rate is 50. To check your own resting heart rate take your pulse on the inside of your wrist, on the thumb side. Use the tips of your first two fingers (not your thumb) to press lightly over the blood vessels on your wrist. Count your pulse for 10 seconds and multiply by 6 to find your beats per minute.

12

The next thing you want to know is what you max heart rate is and what range you should be working in to achieve the results you are looking for. This table shows estimated target heart rates for different ages. Your maximum heart rate is about 220 minus your age. In the age category closest to yours, read across to find your target heart rate. Heart rate during moderately intense activities is about 50-69% of your maximum heart rate, whereas heart rate during hard physical activity is about 70% to less than 90% of the maximum heart rate. The figures are averages, so use them as general guidelines.
