Hole-in-One

Congratulations to Jeff Southmayd on his Hole-in-One! Here are the facts: Course: Ocean Course Date: Tuesday, December 16, 2014 Hole #: 12 Yardage: 152

Building a Solid Foundation Wes Altice, Assistant Golf Professional In order to have a consistent golf swing, we must master the set-up in order to make a powerful and efficient swing. This is one area of the golf swing most people over look and it should be a high priority to master. Having the proper set up will help minimize injury and allows the body to move more efficiently. Here is a great drill to help you get into a perfect set up position, it is called CREATE A TAIL: Start by standing up straight with a driver or long iron held in front against the chest with both hands. Now tilt forward until you have stuck the clubhead out between your legs, forming a ‘tail’. Doing this drill 5 minutes a day will help you master the set up and pave the path to lower scores.

TENNIS TIP

Incorrect

Correct

For a better One-Handed Backhand – Think of a baseball umpire making the safe signal! By Harry Gilbert, Director of Tennis

On the one-handed backhand, the non-dominant hand plays a very important role. As you begin your forward swing with the hitting arm on the one-hander, the other arm should extend back and away from your body. It serves as a counter balance and keeps the back shoulder from rotating forward during the stroke. The first picture shows that I have allowed my back shoulder to come around and my body is rotating too much. This will become a weaker and less controlled shot. The next picture shows my non-dominant hand is back at contact and my racquet will continue to move on the intended path through the ball. When this shot is finished, my racquet will be pointing forward as my non dominant hand is pointing back. The finished swing looks a lot like a baseball umpire signaling a runner safe with both arms spread wide in opposite directions

(l-r) Harry Gilbert, Hammock Beach Tennis Director, Former Touring Tennis Pros - Gigi Fernandez, Brenda Schultz-McCarthy, Tim Wilkison, Hammock Beach Tennis Pro, Gene Paul Lascano, and Former Touring Tennis Pros Mikael Pernfors

Homecoming Weekend 2014 was a resounding success, providing members with a memorable weekend and a great variety of events. As hoped for, the weekend encouraged more non-resident members to come “home and enjoy the Club. Approximately 30% of the members participating were non-resident members. From the Friday night Kick Off Party to the Saturday tennis events, the Holiday Gift Show & Sale which was new this year and the Beatles Tribute Band Concert, as well as the Sunday Member Golf Scramble - all events were designed with the member in mind. If you attended, thank you for participating. If you missed it, be sure to plan for next year!

Silverado Portfolio Tasting

Thursday, January 8, 2015 6pm-9pm • Surf Room Hosted by Pamela Ford of Silverado Winery On January 8, 2015 we will present a portfolio tasting of the wines of Silverado. Silverado’s winemaking is rooted in the vineyards. They are dedicated to expressing the unique and delicious quality and character of grapes grown on each of their six vineyards in the Napa Valley. Since its founding in 1981, the winery had grown to nearly 400 acres, which is farmed organically and sustainably. From them, Silverado produces Estate and Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Chardonnay. While proud of the accolades the estate wines have garnered, their reputation with wine lovers and collectors rests on the shoulders of their Limited Cabernet, made only in the best vintages, and their SOLO Cabernet; the highest expression of our Stags Leap District home. In an interactive, classroom style setting Pamela Ford will take us through each of these expressive wines that will be complimented by Chef Carlos small plates, perfectly paired with each wine flight (total of 4 flights). The following wines will be presented… Miller Ranch Sauvignon Blanc Carneros Chardonnay Rosato di Sangiovese Soda Creek Sangiovese Mt. Setting Goals by Thor Holm, Director of Spa, Recreation & Fitness It’s that time again and many of you have already secretly vowed to lose weight, eat healthier, get more rest, quit smoking, and quit drinking or any number of other resolutions. While well intended, the majority of us set goals with little direction and only an outcome in mind, which in the end, very few of us are able to see through. For the purpose of this article I would like to assist you with goals related to physical activity. 1. Write down what your goals are but be more specific than “I want to lose 30 lbs”. Make it more like, “I would like to combine a variety of activities I enjoy both indoors and outdoors that will enable me to lose 30 lbs. 2. Make your goal achievable and healthy! If your goal is to bench press 400lbs by next year, that would be okay as a goal if you were within say 10% of the goal but unrealistic if you have never bench pressed more than 200 lbs. A better way to set the goal would be that I would like to be 10 % stronger pound for pound than I am this year. That allows for gradual progress towards the goal to serve as motivation.

3. Concentrate on what will make you happy about activities that will get you to your goal. There are any number of ways to utilize 200 calories, some more attractive and at times more practical than others. Have a bucket of activities to choose from that allow you to go with the flow and be consistent. 4. Build in checkpoints, as I mentioned earlier utilizing percentages lends itself for regular check points to assess your progress and build on success. If I wanted to lose 30lbs in a year I would break that up into three pounds (10%) every five weeks. That seems a lot more achievable and allows for many successes along the way. 5. Make sure your goals allow for what is convenient to you and what allows you to be more regular. If I had rock climbing as one of my activities, it is a great activity but not real practical for anyone living here at Hammock Beach. 6. Measure your efforts! Today there is any number of Fitness apps to help you track your progress and can help to motivate you. The Life Fitness app is free and would allow you to track work accomplished on both cardio and strength equipment as well as outdoor activities like walking, running and biking. Fortunately we have a great Fitness Center with awesome instructors, a beautiful beach, wonderful pools, great biking trails, golf courses and water ways to keep us occupied for a life time let alone the next 12 months. Have fun!
