LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL The 2013-2014 school year has made its mark and will be remembered as one in which St. Laurence grew in number and size. Not only did our enrollment numbers go up, we spent this year planning the renovation of our library and locker room areas, as well as the new Ava Maria Parish Life Center for our Church.” Dear SLCS Friends, It is amazing to me that we are already celebrating another year in SLCS history! The 2013-2014 school year has made its mark and will be remembered as one in which St. Laurence grew in number and size. Not only did our enrollment numbers go up, we spent this year planning the renovation of our library and locker room areas, as well as the new Ava Maria Parish Life Center for our Church. With these renovations and changes, we will be able to better serve our constituents. In addition to our growth, we expanded our Catholic Identity by hosting our first annual Family Retreat! It was a beautiful expression of God’s love as we celebrated our families and the beauty of God’s plan for Catholic, Christian families. Not only did we bring together families that dedicated an entire weekend to being together to learn, pray, and play, we also brought together the gifts of clergy from all over the state and our parish. In addition, we were able to hone in on the skills of our parish’s Edge minister, the young adult siblings of current students, the Vietnamese Dominican Sisters, retreat facilitators from the Diocese of Austin, and speakers from other parishes, as well as the school board leadership that was necessary to make such an event happen! We spent the entire weekend from Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon at the beautiful Forest Glen in Huntsville. We shared in daily prayer, the Rosary, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, Eucharistic Adoration, beautiful daily Masses, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, mealtimes, a family talent show, play time around the camp, and songs that will long be remembered! The response was electrifying, and I am certain that next year’s event will be even better! Many thanks to all those who made the weekend possible! Our school board was highlighted with the Archdiocesan School Board Award for its work with Catholic Identity and quality best practices overall. The school board award was presented at the Archdiocesan School Board meeting in February, and many schools have solicited our help since that presentation.
We are proud to say that our teachers and their works are also being recognized by private school and Catholic school colleagues around the archdiocese and state. We have had more professional visitors to our campus this year than any other year! Not only did we give tours and share information about our amazing instructional strategies, we also gave insight into how we are implementing technology into our classrooms as well as how we work to serve the individual needs of students. In addition, we have shared with others the development of our S.P.I.C.E. Program for Special People In Catholic Education. We have been asked to share not only our instructional successes, but also our business model and development trends regarding social media. Most importantly, we are proud to boast of our students’ accomplishments, and this year is no exception. Our sports teams did well and our track team won the city championship! We completed a record amount of service to the global community and provided many resources to local agencies as well as several of our local Catholic schools. We had many students selected for academic honors, and all of our graduates were accepted into the high schools of their choice; nine of them received scholarships – this is a record number! We are also proud to say that the Valedictorian at St. Agnes Academy as well as the Valedictorian and Salutatorian from Strake Jesuit College Preparatory are SLCS alums! We are proud of you all! Thank you to all who make SLCS such a special place and may God continue to unite us in one spirit as we enter into the 2014-2015 school year! In Him we trust,

A NOTE FROM THE PTO Our school community is blessed in so many ways, and one of those is our SLCS PTO. This board is made up of many hardworking, dedicated, talented, giving, and godly women. With their leadership and the help of their dedicated volunteers, our programs and activities come alive at St. Laurence. The PTO is the “club for parents”. It is where the parents can help and give back to the school. It hosts many fun activities and worthwhile programs for the school community throughout the year. They run the Yankee Candle sale which gives thousands of dollars back to the classrooms, host the fun family movie nights out on the playground, and the Christmas and Valentine’s parties. They organize school dances and service projects, provide gifts and goodies for our faculty and staff, sell used uniforms, collect box tops, host Family Rosary nights, hand out birthday balloons, help the children open their containers at lunch, put on a fantastic day with grandparents, participate in prayer groups to pray for our community while students in our school, open car doors on rainy and cold days, make new families feel welcome, decorate beautiful bulletin boards and keep families informed with the marquee.
We would also like to thank all of our parent volunteers who give so generously of their time, talents, and treasures for our school and children. Your efforts are greatly appreciated! The PTO would also like to thank our SLCS faculty and staff for your guidance and leadership for our children. It is truly a trinity of parent, teacher, and child working together.

These are all important to the heart of our school. These are also only possible due to our dedicated volunteers and the
success of our annual fundraiser. This year, due to the huge success of the past Yankee Candle sales, we brought Yankee back, and it sold better than ever! Due to the huge success, this year the PTO will be giving $45,000 to the teachers wish lists. The money will go toward new items for the classrooms to assist the teachers in enhancing learning for our children. They are also donating $5,000 toward the schools’ endowment for tuition assistance. The PTO would like to thank our fundraising chair Rachelle Nurse-Goodly for spearheading an amazing fundraising campaign. She is already working on some great new ideas for next year.

Special People In Catholic Education
O
ur pioneer mission to serve all God’s children is taken seriously at St. Laurence Catholic School. As the premier S.P.I.C.E. program in the state of Texas, SLCS has successfully completed its first two years of serving seven differently-abled students. With a new S.P.I.C.E. Advisory Board in place, we have outstanding support to grow to new heights.
It’s exciting to offer personalized education plans to match the strengths and needs of each of His children. As we plan to expand S.P.I.C.E. services from early childhood through middle school, we are excited to develop and meet the ongoing needs of St. Laurence Parish families. As more students require non-traditional teaching methods and smaller student-to-teacher ratios, we are prepared to meet those needs. Initially formed as a separate program, our future aim is to serve more students school-wide through new “push-in” and continued successful “pull-out” services. We continue to raise funds to help offset the additional cost of S.P.I.C.E. tuition by hosting a S.P.I.C.E. luncheon on the last Friday of February each year. It’s exciting to offer personalized education plans to match the strengths and needs of each of His children. We embrace the opportunity to serve our special families’ needs and count our blessings every day for the challenges and gifts He continues to lay before us on our journey. After an exciting inaugural year, this year the Saints Boosters began to define our goals and look ahead at how the club and its sponsors can support our athletic program annually and enhance school spirit within our school and community. Staying in line with the vision of the inaugural board, we have been successful this year in fulfilling and bringing to fruition many of those original ideas and goals outlined in the mission of the Booster Club.
Accomplishments of the Club this year are as follows: • Providing funds for updating basketball and next year’s volleyball uniforms, coaches’ clinics and trainings • Funds for extra buses and referees during playoffs for multiple sports
With a mostly a new board and the addition of new Athletic Directors this year, Mr. Glen Fucik and Mrs. Betsy Brown, I’d like to say thank you for your support, commitment, and dedicated service in helping to make this second year a success! Through our fundraising efforts, which includes member donations, spirit gear sales, Booster discount cards, signage sponsors, and all our patrons of our spirit night activities, we raised over $25,000. These funds have been used to support our Athletic Department, our student athletes, and our volunteer coaches. Step on campus any Wednesday or attend various sporting events, and you can see Saints pride is alive in the sea of “Blue Out” shirts!

TUITION ASSISTANCE GOLF TOURNAMENT The St. Laurence Catholic School Tuition Assistance Golf Tournament returned in a big way to Sweetwater Country Club on Monday, November 18, 2013. After a one-year hiatus, 128 golfers took the field to raise funds for families who experience temporary, unexpected financial hardship. A record number of golfers raised one of the highest tuition assistance totals ever! The tournament netted more than $39,000 to help defray tuition costs for families in times of need. Golfers received goodie bags underwritten by Murray Insurance & Financial…thank you Jim and Susie Murray. Each goodie bag included a beautiful Nike golf shirt underwritten by Bright Star…thank you Scott and Susan Yokley. Prior to the shotgun start, golfers enjoyed a Chick-Fil-A box lunch underwritten by Solvay Specialty Polymers and Solvay Chemicals…thank you Ziad Haddad. After an exciting afternoon of birdies, pars and mulligans, the golfers hit the clubhouse for a delicious dinner reception underwritten by the St. Laurence Knights of Columbus. There were awards for the best finishers and door prizes a-plenty underwritten by Nectron International…thank you Mark and Adriana Kardoush. There were 12 team sponsors, more than 20 hole sponsors, and a variety of other sponsors that included current parents, alumni parents and the Sugar Land
business community too. Thank you to all for your support! The tournament returns to Sweetwater Country Club on Monday, November 17, 2014. Our goal is to grow the tournament even bigger than last year!

AUCTION EVENT RECAP 2014
The 2014 SLCS Gala “Havana Nights…A Night in Tropical Paradise” was a sizzling evening and truly a night to remember! Nearly 500 guests enjoyed special Cuban touches like hand-rolled cigars and dancing the night away with the famous Cuban Salsa band Angelucho CopaCabana. After checking in, guests walked through a custom-designed archway that welcomed them to the Havana Nights Gala. The ballroom was exquisitely decorated with white linens and beautiful tropical flower arrangements on every table. A backdrop reminiscent of a tropical island surrounded by water completed the look and made guests feel as though they had been whisked away to Cuba. There were many items to bid on from the silent auction, teacher alley, big board, party walls, and live auction. There was something for everyone! Wine connoisseurs in the crowd were pleased with the return of the popular wine pull with over 100 bottles of fine wine. New this year was a gift card pull and an
exciting game of “Heads or Tails.” The crowd was entertained by a special auction video featuring the SLCS students dancing to the popular song “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. Former SLCS graduates currently enrolled at St. Agnes Academy, St. Thomas High School, and Strake Jesuit assisted the guests throughout the evening with electronic bidding. The gala was a huge success and raised over $340,000.00 for the school. This exceptional event would not have been possible without the chairs: Martha Rutledge, Maureen Orth, Michelle Porth, and Nancy Popp, and of course, their spouses who put forth their time, talent, and treasure.
Many thanks to all the numerous volunteers, including parents, faculty, and alumni, who made this night truly a special night for everyone to remember!

Celebrates Service Service is a school tradition that we take very seriously at SLCS. We are very proud to be able to expose our students to the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy through age appropriate projects and provide an additional learning opportunity by educating students about the needs of others. We were so blessed to be able to serve our community in the various ways listed below and we clocked over 3,000 hours of volunteer time. We were humbled and honored to have donated over $8,000 to assist three schools in our Diocese and support the needs of organizations with Ft. Bend County. We will continue to instill in our students’ the moral fiber to never turn away from a need to help and even the smallest things can make a big difference. We have challenged our students to stop, look people in the eyes and smile; spreading happiness and love are the truest forms of service out there! Global Citizens in the Making! A Journey Around the Spanish-Speaking World at SLCS: LITTLE AMIGOS AND SPANISH CULTURE CLUB Every week, after school, cultural learning opportunities are experienced by participants of SLCS Culture Clubs (Little Amigos for our youngest amigos from the ECC Campus and the Spanish Culture Club for the Main Campus amigos) while they develop an international perspective on their journey through the diverse Spanish-speaking culture! Mrs. Gutierrez created and started this fun and comprehensive approach to learning the Spanish culture in 2008 in an effort to create additional opportunities that help students develop ethnic competence, cultivate intercultural skills and awareness, and provide students different experiences to explore the Spanish culture. Throughout the year, different thematic cultural sessions are offered to students desiring to participate; there are different themes for different interests. The goal in all of them is to help them become more globally aware
and learn about the culture of the different Spanishspeaking countries through fun, exciting, and engaging activities promoting knowledge and understanding of the Spanish language and culture. Students virtually travel to exciting places as they incorporate culture, dances, music, films, food, art, and traditions in an engaging, hands-on environment designed to promote natural curiosity, critical thinking, and learning. In the 21st century, globalization has created an interconnected world that demands today’s children become globally competent adults. We need students capable of thriving and succeeding in the global economy. Little Amigos and Spanish Culture Club have many opportunities to foster global competency – while having fun along the way.

Ways to Support SLCS
LETTER FROM THE SCHOOL BOARD PRESIDENT Our lives are not those of leisure and ease, but of action in ministry and evangelization. Like Moses, we must often leave our comfort zones to do the will of God; however, we must first know Who is calling us and What we are being called to. Thus, the advice of the Psalmist, “Be Still and Know that I am God”. As we close our school year themed “Be Still and Know that I am God”, we reflect on this scripture passage from Psalm 46. The New American Bible translation phrases this line as “Be Still and Confess that I am God”. What does this mean? Consider that when Moses approached the burning bush (Exodus Ch. 3), he first had to quit his task of tending the sheep. Then, upon hearing God’s voice, Moses hid his face. Moses took appropriate action, according to the Psalmist, in the dual acts of ceasing work to seek out the mystery and then acknowledging the superiority of God by hiding his face. Moses then left his home and returned to Egypt to do the will of God, which was no easy task. How does this apply to us, and more specifically, to our school ministry? We are a people called to be at unrest. Our lives are not those of leisure and ease, but of action in ministry and evangelization. Like Moses, we must often leave our comfort zones to do the will of God; however, we must first know Who is calling us and What we are being called to. Thus, the advice of the Psalmist, “Be Still and Know that I am God”. When we forego pursuit of the world and instead choose to seek God, we learn to hear God’s voice and discern our calling. Our school administration chose this theme to help all of us in the “school trinity” of Parents, Educators and Students move closer to God through this great ministry – St. Laurence Catholic School. From the school board perspective, I wish to thank everyone – employees and volunteers – who have worked so very hard throughout the school year to make our ministry successful. In particular, I want to thank my fellow outgoing school board members Christy Novak, Marissa Canon and Mick Klein. I have enjoyed working with these talented and dedicated people and look forward to the future work of the school board under the
incoming leadership of Bat Tucker - President, Michael Hurtado - Vice-President, Tammy Noe - Treasurer and Caroline Egan Secretary. They are joined by returning board members John Baugh and Stephanie Araiza, plus incoming board members Tish Cox, Keith Dolar, Kevin McEnaney, David Lieber, and David Wells. As in recent years, our school remains on solid financial footing, with a budget developed for the 2014-15 school year that will allow for current programs to continue and new programs to be implemented. Enrollment numbers for 2014-15 are excellent and the funds raised through several efforts, namely the Annual Fund and school auction dinner, contribute to keeping our school tuition within a reasonable range. On a comparative basis with other Catholic and private schools, the tuition at St. Laurence Catholic School remains a very good deal. We offer our thanks to Development Coordinator Ginger Przybyla and assistant Suzanne Byrne for their work in financial development for our ministry. We also express deep gratitude to our 2014 school auction dinner chairs Nancy Popp, Martha Rutledge, Michelle Porth and Maureen Orth. Their tireless dedication to this event positively impacts our school community in more ways than just funding. OFFICE OF DEVELOPMENT REPORT St. Laurence Catholic is a parish school that depends on the generosity of parents, friends, grandparents, corporations, and foundations for its survival. Thanks to the support of so many, we have had a great success with 2013-2014 fundraisers. Opportunities for giving to SLCS are listed below, along with our results from this past school year. The St. Laurence Catholic School Development Office prepares the annual report and has made every effort to ensure this listing is accurate and complete. FAITH, LEARNING & LEADERSHIP ANNUAL FUND The Faith, Learning & Leadership annual fund efforts continued this year as we obtained our goal of $185,000. Thanks to our generous supporters’. Since we do not receive local tax dollars, we depend on the generosity of our St. Laurence community to help support our ongoing commitment to give our children technology, arts, athletics, and tuition assistance, to name just a few areas benefitting from our Annual Fund. AUCTION GALA – “HAVANA NIGHTS” This year, the SLCS Auction Gala raised over $350,000 for our school. These funds support our general operations for the next school year. Many thanks to those volunteers who gave their time, talent, and treasure to make the night a HUGE success. It would not have been possible without the awesome leadership of Maureen Orth, Michelle Porth, Nancy Popp, and Martha Rutledge. You ladies and the volunteers (including our alumni) that helped did terrific things, and we are eternally grateful. We truly appreciate your spouses and families, as we know the sacrifices they make to support the efforts for the school. ST. LAURENCE CATHOLIC SCHOOL TUITION ASSISTANCE GOLF TOURNAMENT Many of our families desire the quality Catholic education of our parish school, but simply cannot afford the full tuition in times of distress or when an emergency occurs that is unexpected and leaves them in need of financial help. The golf tournament benefits the tuition assistance program at St. Laurence Catholic School. The golf tournament was held in November and raised over $42,000 through the generosity of our supporters. Thank you to the Co-Chairs Tammy and Steve Noe and Susan and Scott Yokley for their leadership.
STEPS FOR STUDENTS SLCS participated in the archdiocesan annual 5K event, Steps For Students. This race, which is organized by the archdiocese, asks all Catholic schools to participate to show unity in the community between schools. This year, SLCS had over 200 register and take part in this fun-filled event, which raised over $6,200 for tuition assistance. PARENT TEACHER ORGANIZATION The PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) works very hard each school year to provide programs, events, and fundraising efforts to benefit SLCS. PTO’s efforts raised over $45,000 for our school through funds that were collected from selling Yankee Candles, collecting Box Tops, and contributions made using the Kroger, Randall’s, and Target card programs. GRANTS SLCS was awarded a $500 grant this year from The Meadows Foundation. We applied for these funds through their Charitable Schools Program. The funds were used by the Leo Club to provide Christmas gifts for needy children. SLCS also applied for and received a $32,000 grant from the DeBusk Foundation to host the DECATS program at St. Laurence. DECATS is a student enrichment program which is offered to students archdiocesan wide. CHARITABLE GIVING Last school year, SLCS gave out over $8,000 in charitable donations to various organizations we serve. These donations were funds collected from grade-level service projects, bake sales, and other school wide projects. SLCS does an amazing job of supporting local organizations in our community and raising awareness of the less-fortunate, all while teaching our students the importance of giving back.

SLCS FINANCIAL REPORT St. Laurence Catholic School receives no significant support from government sources or the Archdiocese of GalvestonHouston. The budgeted tuition revenue represents only 70% of the funding necessary to educate a student at SLCS. The school must rely on voluntary support from fundraising - the annual fund, golf tournament, Steps For Students, and auction proceeds - to close the gap on the full cost of tuition. Due to increased enrollment and highly successful fundraising efforts, SLCS has been able to support the School Board’s strategic initiatives by ensuring a financial commitment to

competitive teacher salaries, tuition assistance, professional development for faculty and staff, expanding academic programs, and funding reserves for facility repair and replacement. SLCS’ expenses and revenues for the fiscal year of 2014 are shown below. Non-monetary gifts are valuable because they meet the nonbudgeted needs of SLCS. The school does not utilize its budget for these needed items as it must spend funds elsewhere. In-kind gifts are income tax-deductible.
Many companies will match the donations of their employees, retirees and family members. Matching gifts can double or even triple the value of your gift to SLCS. You can contact your employer’s human resources department to see if they have a matching gift program.
Memorial and Tribute Gifts
You can give a gift in memory of or in honor of a loved one, relative, student, friend or teacher that recognizes the person while benefiting SLCS at the same time. The honoree will be notified of the gift through a card from the school.
Some donors would like to ensure the future of their charitable beneficiaries through planned giving or deferred giving. Planned gifts may include charitable bequests, charitable remainder trusts, annuities and life insurance policies.
Giving through the transfer of stocks and long-term securities avoids the capital gains tax and allows the donor to receive an income tax deduction for the full fair market value of their gift.

SLCS FAITH, LEARNING & LEADERSHIP ANNUAL FUND St. Laurence Catholic School 2014/2015 Faith, Learning & Leadership Annual Fund will kick off on Wednesday and Family Commitment Day will be Friday, September 19th. Remember...it’s all for our kids. SLCS TUITION ASSISTANCE GOLF TOURNAMENT The Annual St. Laurence Catholic School Tuition Assistance Golf Tournament will be held at Sweetwater Country Club. STEPS FOR STUDENTS 5K RUN/WALK Steps For Students is the archdiocesan annual 5K event. The archdiocese asks all Catholic schools and their families participate; the event will be at the Co-Cathedral. ANNUAL AUCTION GALA DINNER SLCS’s annual auction gala and dinner will be held at the Marriott Town Center in Sugar Land. It is guaranteed to be a night to remember! Please mark your calendar.

Plan to join the students of SLCS for this national, week-long celebration of Catholic education. Catholic Schools Week begins Sunday, January 25th and ends Saturday, January 31, 2015.
The annual S.P.I.C.E. luncheon will be held on Friday, February 27, 2015, in the SLCC Parish Hall. You will not want to miss this annual luncheon.
