letter from the principal With a school that is thriving in every way, we must take a moment and thank the parents, students, faculty, and staff that make our school such a special place to learn and work. Truly, without the unconditional support of our community, SLCS would not be the school it is today, and we are thankful for all that is done for us! Dear Supporters of St. Laurence Catholic School, The 2012-2013 school year was a terrific year for SLCS! Through the work and generosity of many people, our school is thriving and maintaining its reputation for excellence in Catholic education. In addition to maintaining high academic standards through differentiated instruction, our school embarked upon two new ventures: the Saints Booster Club, which supports our athletic programs and the S.P.I.C.E. Program, which supports students that need additional one-on-one or small group instruction to learn best. Not only did we see the beginning of two new programs for our school, we also experienced the excitement of increased technology in the classroom. With the help of our PTO, fees paid by parents, and the auction, we were able to equip our classrooms with the technical support needed for the SMART Boards, while also ensuring that the students have access to work on an iPad, Chrome book, or laptop while in the classroom. Our school is at full capacity with waiting lists at every grade level, and we are thrilled to serve over 720 students, making us the largest archdiocesan Catholic school in GalvestonHouston. With a school that is thriving in every way, we must take a moment and thank the parents, students, faculty, and staff that make our school such a special place to learn and work. Truly, without the unconditional support of our

community, SLCS would not be the school it is today, and we are thankful for all that is done for us! Using the Raptor system for the first time this year, we were able to not only keep our campus more secure we also got a glimpse at just how many volunteer hours are shared with our school in a year’s time. The dilemma for us is that it only includes the hours that are done on campus during school hours. Even with that limitation, we logged in over 1,460 volunteer hours in our school building. I know that if we added the hours that parents spent on the computer at home, on the field and courts during athletics, and in the evenings/weekends during school functions, that number would probably at least triple! Just ask a PTO or School Board member! It is important for us to say THANK YOU to each and every person that has supported our school in some way through their time, talent, and/or treasure for it is in that spirit of giving to our community that SLCS has developed the programs and supported our students like we have for the last 21 years! We look forward to a great year in 2013-2014, and I ask that you pray for us as we stay founded in our faith and grounded in academic excellence! In Him we trust, Debra Haney, Principal

A Note from the PTO The SLCS PTO had a busy year filled with many different programs and activities which helped bring our school community closer together. These programs were made possible by our dedicated parent volunteers and also by the success of our annual fundraiser. This year the board decided to once again team up with Yankee Candle company and bring back one of the most successful fundraisers in school history. As the result of our incredible success, we were able to fund the various programs such as Grandparents’ Day, Father Daughter Dance, Family Movie nights, PTO Rosary, class holiday parties, faculty and staff appreciation events and many more key events.

We thank all the parent volunteers for giving so generously of their time and talent. We would also like to thank our faculty and staff for always being an example of Christ in their love and dedication to our children.

PTO board Members

We earned over $35,000 after expenses. The response to the Yankee Candle product has been overwhelmingly phenomenal and we couldn’t be happier! Special thanks to parents for participating and to Kristin Holy for chairing the fundraising efforts. The PTO would also like to thank the Leo Club for helping us unload all those candles that were delivered on fall conference day!

The 2012-2013 PTO Board traditionally awards funds from its operating budget back to the school and the classrooms. This year we were able to grant many of the teacher wish lists, an ongoing tradition, which will in turn benefit our students in the classroom. We gave $15,000 to purchase items on the teacher wish list and as our ongoing tradition, we also gave an annual gift to help build our endowment for tuition assistance an amount of $5,000.

Special People In Catholic Education

It

is widely known that many famous people were once struggling students. Albert Einstein, Walt Disney, John Lennon, and Bill Gates found it very difficult to fit the mold of the regular classroom. Not all students can benefit the most from large group discussions with a teacher-led lecture. In an effort to bring out the most talent, ability, and gifts in all of God’s children, our individualized special needs program, Special People in Catholic Education (S.P.I.C.E.), was born. A multi-faceted and well thought out plan, S.P.I.C.E. was developed as the first Catholic special needs pull-out program in the area to bring out the best in children who have diagnosed learning disabilities. Four St. Laurence Catholic School children have completed our pilot year of S.P.I.C.E. with substantial growth which is proof positive that parents do not need to put their children in a different school to find the help their differently-abled children deserve. Each child received individual or small group instruction with hands-on activities designed with their strengths and weaknesses in mind. Although the learning process was different, the common core and archdiocesan benchmark requirements were still met in S.P.I.C.E.. While in S.P.I.C.E., each child works in ways that are most beneficial to his/her particular learning style. Then assessment is matched to bring out the most productive results. Whether it is oral dictation of a concept

rather than writing a paragraph or demonstrating parts of a 3-dimensional shape on a box instead of labeling a picture, each S.P.I.C.E. student demonstrates mastery of required skills.

We are here to mold, to carve, and to create the most innovative Catholic leaders to their maximum potential. Hands down, the paramount benefits of S.P.I.C.E. are the ones shared when practicing our faith, serving the community, and socializing with age-appropriate peers in a Catholic school setting. Learning skills in the vacuum of a special needs school or putting a child with a learning disability in a public school without Christian values is not our answer to serving God’s children. We are here to mold, to carve, and to create the most innovative Catholic leaders to their maximum potential. We are confident the children of S.P.I.C.E.will contribute to our society in meaningful and productive ways in His service.

Our first four students to complete the S.P.I.C.E. pilot year! 8 |

Booster club recap ...what was accomplished was an enhanced school camaraderie, and school spirit that was pervasive among the students and parents alike. Saints Spirit was alive and loud!”

The inaugural year of the Saints Boosters truly defied all expectations. We got off to a very late start, which meant pulling together a team quickly, and improvising as we went. Along with some great things learned during that venture, the team and school body rallied and exceeded the original goals set forth. Thanks to the outstanding support from our school families, we raised over $35,000. These funds went directly back to our athletic teams and school spirit activities.

Some of the more visible items to come from this year were: • Establishment of an Athletic Scholarship fund so that all students would have the ability to participate, even if their financial situation was less than perfect • Funding of an escrow account to offset the Athletic Department loss due to the rising costs of our athletic programs above what is collected from players’ fees • Establishment of an on-line Spirit Store and monthly spirit sales on both campuses

Mostly what was accomplished was an enhanced school camaraderie and school spirit that was pervasive among the students and parents alike. If you looked at the stands at almost any athletic event, Blue-Out shirts were everywhere. Saints Spirit was alive and loud!

• Promotion of “Blue-Out” Spirit days at sporting events and weekly Spirit Nights at area restaurants

On behalf of this fantastic inaugural Saints Boosters Executive Board; thank you for making this a wonderful first year. Please support Michelle Cashiola and her team in the 2013/2014 school year.

• Purchase of the Spirit Banner displayed in the carpool drive

• Purchase of the new gymnasium scoring table, hydration carts, team water bottles, and new athletic coolers for away games requiring travel • New shelving and storage cabinets in the Dining Hall closet for athletic equipment • Purchase of new Track & Field record boards

Sincerely,

• Provision of buses, as well as officials for playoff games in Football and Soccer

Auction Event Recap 2013 Magic was in the air and hats were adorned by all around as SLCS welcomed school parents, alumni parents, faculty, staff and friends to the 21st annual auction this past April. The theme for the night was Run For the Roses, In God’s Grace, which was based on the Kentucky Derby. There was truly a magical feel throughout the ballroom at the Sugar Land Marriott for an evening of dinner, dancing and fundraising for SLCS.

If you were one of the 450 guests who attended you could truly say that every detail made you feel as though you were truly at the derby. Upon entering the ballroom, you were captivated by a sea of red roses and linens that beautifully dressed each table. Our guests were dressed to party in magnificent Derby hats and cocktail attire. They enjoyed an amazing meal and a specially created array of desserts. There were many items to bid on from our silent auction, teacher alley, big board, parent and kids’ party walls and live auction; there was something for everyone, including a fabulous trip to the 2014 Kentucky Derby. And if you were a Wine Connoisseur, the new wine pull proved to be quite a success as it sold out

quickly just before dinner. But that was not the only new and exciting feature introduced auction night. Auction Source, an electronic bidding technology was presented to our guests and proved to be the highlight of the evening. Our guests were mingling with their friends while checking and placing bids on iPads throughout the entire ballroom. The gala was a huge success and raised over $345,000 for the school. This exceptional event would not have been possible without the chairs; Jacki Breckon, Phung Ngo-Burns, Michelle Porth and Christina Stanton, and of course, their spouses who put forth their time, talent and passion.

Many thanks to all the parent volunteers who made this night one to remember. You helped to make SLCS’ largest fundraiser a night of magic and fun for all.

Celebrates Service Service is a school tradition at SLCS, as each grade level serves a different segment of our population, either focusing on the homeless, day laborers, children, families, the elderly and our troops to name a few. We are very proud of our commitment to service; we provide age appropriate projects and provide an additional learning opportunity by educating students about the needs of others. We are so blessed at SLCS and continue to try and instill in our students the moral fiber to never turn away from a need to help. Student Service Organization hi-lighted

Each year we will focus on one student service organization and highlight their accomplishments. This year we feature the St. Laurence Catholic School Student Council (AKA STUCO). The Student Council had a very productive year led by officers; President- Ethan Perez, 1st Vice President-Thomas Le, 2nd Vice President- Trinity Le; Secretary- Grayson Thomas, Treasurer- Jurist Chan and Publicity ChairEmelia Bartusiak. This year there were four elected student representatives from each grade level (4th - 8th) to increase representation on the student council. The fall began with a group of student council members attending the Middle School Leadership Workshop at St. Agnes High School. The students acquired many great ideas to put into action for the year. The Student Council members are very service oriented and assist with many school leadership activities including Grandparents’ Day, Parent Information Nights and Catholic Schools Week. Making and distributing candy cane candleholders to the faculty and staff at Christmas time was a way to show student appreciation for the faculty and staff.

The major service project for the SLCS STUCO is the annual Bingo Night. Each year a different charity is selected to be the recipient of the proceeds from this service project. This year the Student Council selected MD Anderson Cancer Center in honor of Mrs. Dianna Thompson and her successful fight against breast cancer. The fund raiser was a huge success. Several other SLCS organizations also participated including Spanish Honor Society and the Leo Club. A donation of over $1900 dollars was made to MD Anderson to help support cancer research. The leadership and service shown by the Student Council contributed to the positive atmosphere at St. Laurence Catholic School this year. Officers were elected in May for the 2013-2014 Student Council. Another successful school year is expected.

Other SLCS Student Service organizations include: • Art Club • LEO Club • National Junior Honor Society

• National Elementary Honor Society • Student Council • Safety Patrol

Ways to Support SLCS

letter from the School Board President As a result of fiscally responsible decisions and strong enrollment numbers, SLCS is in a very solid financial position. Enrollment numbers for the 2013-2014 school year are excellent. The Annual Appeal and school auction were hugely successful, helping us to bridge the gap between tuition income and the actual cost of educating our children at SLCS.” Dear SLCS Family, As this school year of “Walking in His Grace” draws to a close, a painting by one of our school parents, Tamara Kontrimas, comes to mind. Entitled “Rivers of Grace,” this painting hangs in the St. Laurence church narthex where its imagery and accompanying description powerfully depict the life-giving flow of grace from God to His people—then through those blessed recipients back out into the world. As we review the year, your school board gives thanks for the rivers of grace that have carried all of us and have drawn us closer to God and to one another. In the context of the SLCS School Board, I would like to thank multiple individuals who have been instruments of grace in our community. Fellow outgoing board members Phillip Butler and Lowell Stanton have generously shared their gifts, and their dedicated service is sincerely appreciated. Phillip, Lowell, and I end our three year terms with great optimism, our positive expectations being fueled by knowledge of the giftedness of our officers for the coming year: President Jim Murray, VicePresident Christy Novak, Treasurer Tammy Noe, and Secretary Marisa Cannon. These officers are supported by talented board members Stephanie Araiza, Johnny Baugh, Caroline Egan, Michael Hurtado, and Bat Tucker. The Board is in very good hands. Your Board is happy to report that SLCS is thriving on many levels. Recent Iowa Test of Basic Skills results indicated that average composite scores for the various grade levels tested (grades 1 to 8) were 24 to 39 points higher than the national average. Robust efforts are being made to incorporate technology into classroom activities and to provide differentiated instruction to increasingly meet the needs of all students. Enrichment activities are being developed and used to enhance instruction for academically gifted students and individualized review/ instruction is being utilized for students who benefit from additional support in specific subject areas. The SPICE program began on a small scale, with promising early results for this important effort to welcome God’s children who need specialized instruction in a very small group setting to best develop their abilities. As a result of fiscally responsible decisions and strong enrollment

numbers, SLCS is in a very solid financial position. Enrollment numbers for the 2013-2014 school year are excellent. The Annual Appeal and school auction were hugely successful, helping us to bridge the gap between tuition income and the actual cost of educating our children at SLCS. The results of these efforts also provide classroom enhancements which greatly enrich the learning environment. We offer our sincere thanks to Development Coordinator Ginger Przybyla and assistant Suzanne Byrne for their very fruitful efforts. We also express deep gratitude to our 2013 auction chairs: Jacki Breckon, Phung Burns, Michelle Porth, and Christina Stanton. Their countless hours of volunteer service created a beautiful auction gala. Looking at other critical dimensions of our school programs, SLCS seeks to support the development of the whole Christian person, including Christian values, social skills, and community service. This letter format does not allow for mention of all of the activities at SLCS which support these goals, yet we are delighted that students, faculty, staff, and parents have logged thousands of hours of service during this school year—in the community, in the parish, and within the school. Service feeds the soul and gives our students a sense of the heart of Christianity. Our students are fed spiritually through their weekly celebration of the Mass together and enlivened by their participation in those Masses. In addition to their religion classes, students build community and grow in their Catholic faith in their Saints Families. Our school board Faith Committee is also working on plans to offer an SLCS family retreat in the future, to nurture both family faith life and the sense of community. “I cannot tell it all,” but we rejoice that so many positive activities are bubbling at SLCS! Our vibrant school community is thriving by the grace of God and the hard work of truly dedicated administrators, faculty, staff, and parent volunteers. We are so grateful to all those who support our school in countless, varied ways. May God bless each of you, and may God continue to bless and protect our school community. Trusting in Him with you,

Lori Knowles, Ph.D. 2012-2013 School Board President

Office of development Report St. Laurence Catholic is a parish school that depends on the generosity of parents, friends, grandparents, corporations, and foundations for its survival. Thanks to the support of so many, we have had a great success with 2012-2013 fundraisers. Opportunities for giving to SLCS are listed below, along with our results from this past school year. The St. Laurence Catholic School Development Office prepares the annual report and has made every effort to ensure this listing is accurate and complete. The donors listed in the publication made a contribution to SLCS between July 1, 2012, and June 30, 2013. If we have omitted your name or listed it inaccurately, please accept our sincere apologies. We ask that you contact the Office of Development at 281-980-0500 to advise us of any errors so we can make corrections.

Annual Appeal Fund Our Annual Appeal efforts continue to grow this year as we exceeded $215,000. Thanks to our generous supporters we could not be happier with these results. SLCS is able to do many things from these funds that are raised. Since we do not receive local tax dollars, we depend on the generosity of our St. Laurence community to help support our ongoing commitment to afford our children’s technology, arts, athletics, and tuition assistance, to name just a few areas benefitting from our Annual Appeal. Auction Gala – “Run For The Roses” This year, the SLCS Auction Gala raised over $345,000 for our school. These funds go toward our general operations for the next school year. Thank you again to our chairs: Phung NgoBurns, Jacki Breckon, Michelle Porth and Christina Stanton for making the evening one to remember. Thank you to those who gave of their time and talent to make our Auction amazing! Funds for Tuition Assistance Many of our families desire the quality Catholic education of our parish school, but simply cannot afford the full tuition in times of distress or when an emergency occurs that is unexpected and leaves them in need of financial help. We have currently raised over $44,000 through the generosity of our supporters. Our goal is to grow this endowment to an amount where we can use the proceeds gained. We welcome gifts to this fund at anytime; they can be in the form of cash, checks, securities, testamentary gifts, gifts in honor/in memorial of, planned giving, and matching gifts.

Steps for Students SLCS participated in the Archdiocesan’s annual 5K event, Steps For Students. This race, which is organized by the Archdiocese, asks all Catholic schools to participate and we had over 140 people sign up to take part from SLCS. Our school raised over $5,200 in this fundraiser. Parent Teacher Organization Our PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) works hard each school year to provide programs, events, and fundraising efforts to benefit SLCS. Last year the PTO’s efforts raised over $45,000 for our school. These funds were collected from selling Yankee Candles, collecting Box Tops, and contributions made through the Kroger, Randall’s, and Target card programs. Grants SLCS was awarded a $500 grant this year from The Meadows Foundation. We applied for these funds through their Charitable Schools Program. SLCS also applied for and received a $31,000 grant to host the DECATS program at St. Laurence under the direction of the DeBusk Foundation. Charitable Giving Last school year, SLCS gave out over $10,000 in charitable donations to various organizations. These donations were funds collected from grade-level service projects, various student club bake sales and projects, and were awarded to organizations we served. We did a great job of supporting local organizations in our community and raising awareness of the less fortunate, all while teaching our students the importance of giving back.

Matching Gifts

Stock and Security Transfers

Non-monetary gifts are valuable because they meet the nonbudgeted needs of SLCS. The school does not utilize its budget for these needed items as it must spend funds elsewhere. In-kind gifts are income tax-deductible.

Many companies will match the donations of their employees, retirees and family members. Matching gifts can double or even triple the value of your gift to SLCS. You can contact your employer’s human resources department to see if they have a matching gift program.

Memorial and Tribute Gifts

You can give a gift in memory of or in honor of a loved one, relative, student, friend or teacher that recognizes the peron while benefitting SLCS at the same time. The honoree will be notified of the gift through a card from the school.

Some donors would like to ensure the future of their charitable beneficiaries through planned giving or deferred giving. Planned gifts may include charitable bequests, charitable remainder trusts, annuities and life insurance policies.

Giving through the transfer of stocks and long-term securities avoids the capital gains tax and allows the donor to receive an income tax deduction for the full fair market value of their gift.

Time

We are always looking for volunteers at SLCS. We would love for you to give your time and talent! Please contact the school office for details.

Please visit the SLCS website at www.stlaurencecs.org for more information on the ways you can support our school. Also feel free to contact the Office of Development with any questions at 281-980-0500.
