From the President This year, more than any other, I’m thrilled to see UFV graduates crossing the stage. The restrictions imposed by the pandemic meant that we did not have the opportunity to celebrate in person for two years. Although we marked the achievements of our students in other ways, there is a wonderful and tangible joy in seeing you all in person. For UFV graduands, Convocation is the culmination of one or more years of study. For UFV faculty, staff, and our community, these ceremonies create moments of pride in your achievements. I hope today is an occasion you will remember fondly for the rest of your life. UFV’s coat of arms features the Halq’eméylem word Íyáqáwtxw, which means “House of Transformation”. I hope you have found your time at UFV to be transformative. The knowledge you have gained will certainly transform your world. Education helps us understand the world and provides solutions towards a better global community and a better future for us all. These past years have been challenging for Canadians. The far-reaching effects of the pandemic and catastrophic natural disasters close to our home here in the Fraser Valley have been difficult, but history has proven that knowledge gained through education and research will solve many of the world’s most pressing issues. Congratulations on your hard work, your determination, and on joining the community of UFV alumni. The achievement of a university credential is seldom managed without the support of family, friends, parents, and partners. Today is a celebration for these people too, so please take time to thank and honour them for their role in your success. Take confidence in the knowledge, skills, and experience you have gained at UFV. You have persevered and you can gather satisfaction from your efforts and in the knowledge that your greatest success in life is still to come. We hope you remember an education goes beyond classrooms and textbooks, and that lifelong learning enables continued progression and success, for you, for your family, and for society. From the Chancellor It is good to be back and to see you all in person at Convocation. Thank you for joining UFV to celebrate the achievements of a remarkable and diverse group of people. In four ceremonies, UFV will award credentials to graduates from a wide variety of academic, applied, and professional programs. I applaud your talent, your hard work, and your success. You have earned our respect and the respect of your colleagues and mentors by overcoming challenges along the way. We are confident your acquired knowledge will benefit you, your family, and your community. I also know you have had unconditional support from family, friends, faculty, staff, and many others during your journey. Please take a moment to thank your support team and contemplate how you might “pay it forward” to others who may need your help. At UFV we engage learners, transform lives, and build community. Traditions OUR TRADITIONS

Stó:lō Territory UFV strives to be a place of learning that recognizes, respects, and includes Indigenous ways of knowing. Our campuses are situated in the traditional territory of the Stó:lō peoples. The Stó:lō have an intrinsic relationship with what they refer to as S’olh Temexw (Our Sacred Land); therefore, we express our gratitude and respect for the honour of living and working in this territory. THE TALKING STICK

THE DRUM

The Talking Stick is a gift from the Stó:lō people to UFV, honouring all Indigenous people. The Talking Stick and Stó:lō drummers lead the academic procession into Convocation and the recession after the ceremony.

The UFV Ceremonial Drum was presented to UFV by the Stó:lō people in 1997. The drum is decorated with the symbol of a thunderbird.

The figures on the Talking Stick are a wolf and a thunderbird. The wolf is symbolic of “the teacher” in Stó:lō territory, while the thunderbird represents the highest level of knowledge. Most universities in the Commonwealth have a ceremonial mace, which accompanies the Convocation ceremonies. It is the staff of office, representing official authority (like the Speaker of the House of Commons). UFV uses the Talking Stick rather than a mace for this purpose, thus bringing together a partnership between Indigenous and university traditions.

Steven Point, who was then the chiefs’ representative of the Stó:lō Nation, presented the drum for use at Convocation and other ceremonies. “It’s with great pride that I present a symbol of our fraternity, camaraderie, and loyalty,” said Point at the presentation ceremony. “We all spent nine months with our mothers, waiting to come in to the world, and we heard her heartbeat, and when we were born, we recognized our mothers by their heartbeat. When we make the sound of a drum it’s a symbol of the heartbeat of our mother. It’s a precious sound, it gathers people together, and we sing our songs. “That’s why we chose this symbol to present to you. We truly want to come together, and to have a good relationship with all of you. I hope and pray that it will always stand as a symbol of the affinity between our groups of people.”

THE CHANCELLOR’S MEDALLION

Traditional academic regalia consists of a gown, hood, and a mortarboard or cap and tassel. The wearing of robes became common in the Middle Ages. In monasteries and universities of the time, scholars wore the same long closed gowns as other medieval men. By the time the University of Cambridge was founded in the early thirteenth century, doctors in law and music were permitted to wear gowns in scarlet, purple, and red. Over time, garments and colours came to identify their university. Regalia colours often matched those of the university patron, or the colours of the city in which the university was located.

UFV’s medallion is worn by the Chancellor for very special occasions. The radiant diamonds in the design symbolize future alumni spreading their knowledge. The BC jade in the centre reflects our region’s rich farming and ecological roots. This hand-crafted 18kt white and yellow gold medallion was a gift to the university from Brian Lee of Abbotsford.

At UFV, regalia uses the university’s rich green colours. There are vee-stoles for diploma and certificate graduates, while bachelor’s degree program graduates wear degree hoods. The coloured binding or trim on the edge of the degree hoods represents the faculty from which a student is graduating.

THE UFV COAT OF ARMS UFV’s coat of arms (on the cover) features symbols of Stó:lô culture, local wildlife, and elements of the Fraser Valley landscape. UFV motto: Íyáqáwtxw — in Halq’eméylem, the language of the Stó:lō people, it means, “House of Transformation”, symbolizing the transformation of character and intellect. Blue herons — First Peoples’ symbols of inquisitiveness, determination, and excellent judgement. Sighting a heron before a hunt indicated the hunt would be victorious. This parallels the search for knowledge at UFV. The sturgeon — a symbol of abundance and a source of life that lives in the Fraser River (symbolized by the green and white undulating stripes). These represent UFV as a source of knowledge and vitality. The hummingbird — representative of joy, resilience, agility, and the ability to travel great distances. These mirror UFV’s mandate to provide lasting knowledge, the ability to respond to the community, endurance over time, and the transfer of knowledge to students for their journey. A student athlete for most of her years at UFV, Kate Fisher successfully balanced the competing demands of academic life and playing on the UFV Cascades soccer team. Kate achieved a 3.75 grade point average over the course of her studies in the Bachelor of Business Administration program and earned U-Sports Academic All-Canadian honours in 2019, 2020, and 2021. This national recognition underscores the impressiveness of her on-field and academic achievements.

Danielle Hill came to UFV as a mature student wondering if her age would be a disadvantage. Instead, she found it gave her invaluable focus. Danielle balanced full-time work, full-time homework, and the double full-time career of parenthood. As a woman of Métis heritage, she discovered that as she progressed through her Indigenous studies, she fell in love with new aspects of her identity.

Kate worked part-time to finance her education and applied her learning in business and human resources to a supervisory role helping train workers in customer service. She is civic-minded and volunteered with the administrative team of UFV Enactus — a group that empowers students to tackle economic, social, and environmental issues within their communities. Kate presented on behalf of Enactus, developed a newsletter, and supported the administration of this student organization. She also volunteered in a public health clinic in her hometown of Powell River. Having caught the travel bug while venturing solo in South America and Italy, Kate will soon set out on trips to Vietnam and Bali.

Danielle was involved in outreach community work while at UFV and was chosen to be a curator for the Witness Blanket when UFV brought this Indigenous remembrance of residential schools to campus. She has provided educational support to urban and Indigenous families on Stó:lō territories, including in Abbotsford schools, and she has led workshops for district teachers on appropriate Indigenous educational resources and curriculum content. Danielle sees UFV as opening doors and as a positive experience for all students, but especially Indigenous students like herself who have been supported in bringing new ways of learning through an Indigenous lens. As Danielle closes this chapter, she looks forward to expanding her cultural knowledge, sharing what she has learned with others, and the continual discovery of her own story.

UFV departments nominate students to present the graduate address at each Convocation ceremony. It is an honour to be selected to represent the graduates of 2022. We congratulate our four student speakers.

Sushil Dosanjh had already graduated with a Bachelor of Science from UFV when she decided to change the course of her life. After graduating, she traveled to Europe, Singapore, and India before starting medical school in the Dutch Caribbean. However, she quickly realized what she really wanted was to take more of a personal approach with patients. Instead of pursuing medicine, she applied, and was accepted to, the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at UFV.

Highly respected by students and faculty in the Teacher Education department, lifelong learner Travis Gingerich had already completed a diploma in Counselling and Caregiving, a Bachelor of Science degree (honours in Physical Geography), and a Master of Science in Physical Geography at Simon Fraser University before coming back to UFV to complete his degree in Education.

Her decision was a good one. Sushil achieved an overall 4.05 grade point average in the program and did so while tutoring other BSN students and mentoring students as part of the BSN Buds program. She was also a nursing student class representative and a member of the Biology/Chemistry Student Association while achieving her first degree. Sushil received the Fraser Health Above and Beyond award, was on the Dean’s List of Distinguished Students (2018–22), and received the UFV Board of Governors Annual Bursary. Sushil is now a nurse in the pediatric ward of Abbotsford General Hospital and may one day pursue the field of forensic nursing.

In addition to an outstanding academic record (a GPA of 4.21), Travis worked with at-risk youth through the Cyrus Centre and volunteered with the Salvation Army Centre of Hope, where he served meals to homeless and displaced individuals. At UFV, Travis worked for two years as a sustainability assistant and as a laboratory and research assistant in the UFV Luminescence Dating Laboratory. Between 2014 and 2016, Travis led Supported Learning Groups (SLG) and taught study groups for challenging firstand second-year courses. He also mentored junior SLG leaders in effective session management and facilitation. His direct supervisor at that time commented on his creative and enthusiastic approach, noting he used reallife examples when explaining geographical phenomena. Travis is looking forward to beginning the next phase in his teaching career in Ontario. 13

Peter Dhillon DOCTOR OF L AWS

A groundbreaking businessman from humble beginnings now producing billions of pounds of cranberries and employing hundreds across the world, Peter Dhillon is a tireless leader, philanthropist, and cultural advocate. And as of June 14, he’s also the proud recipient of an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of the Fraser Valley. Dhillon built on values ingrained by his parents Rashpal and Surinder, who slept on a sawdust floor after immigrating from a village in the Punjab region of India, not far from Chandigarh. He cleaned ditches on their first farm — eventually transforming the family cranberry business into a global leader. As the youngest, first non-American, and first visible minority to serve as chairman in the history of Ocean Spray — the world’s premier cranberry cooperative with more than $2 billion in annual sales — Dhillon often uses his platform to empower others. Appointed to the Bank of Canada’s board of directors, he’s held the governorship of such leading public entities as the BC Agricultural Land Reserve, Atomic Energy Canada, the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games, and the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency, and served on boards for the Vancouver Airport Authority, BC Ferries, Greater Vancouver Advisory Authority, and many more. Born in Burnaby, Dhillon holds a BA in History from UBC, a law degree from the University of Leeds, and was honoured with the Order of British Columbia in 2009, and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal in 2012. As a business leader and CEO of the Richberry Group of Companies, Dhillon’s strong sense of ethics and duty led him to donate millions to causes throughout British Columbia and across the country in the last decade alone. Breaking the colour barrier time and time again, he counts his individual successes as the success of his community. For this reason, he cherishes such recognition as the NRI India Award, Darpan Magazine Extraordinary Achievement Award, Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce CEO of the Year, and Canada Sikh Centennial Gala Inductee.

Dr. Jo-ann Archibald Q’um Q’um Xiiem DOCTOR OF LET TERS

When a young Jo-ann Archibald boarded the school bus daily as an elementary school student back in the 1950s, she stepped from one world into another. Archibald, whose Indigenous name is Q’um Q’um Xiiem, grew up in Soowhalie near Cultus Lake, part of the Stó:lō community, and attended the Chilliwack public school system. Three academic degrees and a 50-year career later, Dr. Archibald is well known as an Indigenous education scholar who has played a key role in weaving Indigenous content and ways of knowing into the curriculum at the K-12 and post-secondary levels in British Columbia and leading other Indigenous education-related initiatives. In recognition of her significant contribution to Indigenous education, Archibald will receive an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from UFV at its June 14 convocation ceremony. During her school days, she did not see herself reflected in what she was taught in the classroom. “What little Indigenous content there was, was based on stereotypes and I did not identify with them.” Once she became a teacher, she was determined to change that. “I devoted my career to making systemic change at all levels of education, so that students would have the opportunity to learn relevant Indigenous perspectives, cultures, and world views, and learn about the history of our colonization.” At the heart of her practice is Indigenous Storywork, an approach to teaching, learning, curriculum, and research that incorporates Indigenous traditional and life-experience stories as a way of understanding Indigenous culture. She started her professional working life as an elementary school teacher and her last role was Associate Dean for Indigenous Education in the Faculty of Education at UBC. Throughout her career she has worked collaboratively with partners to Indigenize curriculum and encourage the recognition of Indigenous ways of knowing. She is now retired and a professor emeritus and continues her work on a volunteer basis. 17

Diane Delves DOCTOR OF L AWS

Diane Delves has always been an entrepreneur. As a young child, Delves and her neighbour, who was her best friend, took over a small stake of her friend’s mother’s garden, harvesting their own vegetables. “We didn’t want to eat vegetables, we actually sold them to neighbours,” says Delves. “We’d go door to door, selling potatoes, carrots, and peas. So, that was my first taste of running my own business.” As she grew older, she shifted that entrepreneurial spirit from produce to real estate. Delves spent the first half of her career as a real estate appraiser, even starting her own appraising business. Acquiring buildings organically over the years helped Delves transition into the development side of the industry, and in 2000 she co-founded Quantum Properties. In two decades, her development group has built over 1,300 new homes, including Mahogany at Mill Lake, which is Abbotsford’s tallest building. Quantum was recently ranked thirteenth in Business in Vancouver’s Biggest BC Businesses Owned by Women in 2021 list. She has experience serving on many boards including the Abbotsford Airport Authority, Partnerships BC, and the BC Expropriation Compensation Board. She currently serves as a Vice Chair at Large for the Urban Development Institute, Pacific Region. Possibly more impressive than her impact on the real estate industry in British Columbia has been Delves’ generosity and commitment to bettering the lives of people in her community. She is a benefactor on behalf of Quantum to charities such as Habitat for Humanity, Canucks Place Children’s Hospice, Abbotsford Hospice, and Hawthorne Senior Care Community. Delves has also been a long-time supporter of UFV. She has sponsored and hosted events, and since 2008, funded an annual Women in Trades scholarship at UFV. She is adding a second scholarship this fall.

Shirley Turcotte DOCTOR OF L AWS

Improving the circumstances of Indigenous people on a systematic level and developing mental health support and tools has been Shirley Turcotte’s life’s work. The Métis knowledge carrier and registered clinical counsellor’s work has been recognized throughout Canada and she has been the recipient of British Columbia’s Woman of Distinction Award in Health and Education. Now UFV is adding to Turcotte’s long list of honours by presenting her with an honorary degree. “The work that I do is so collective, and it involves so many peoples across the Nations, that it would be really an insult not to accept it,” says Turcotte, a resident of Vancouver. “I can appreciate that this award is honouring the work that we’ve done in Indigenous psychotherapy and in attempting to change child welfare and to reshape things in Canada.” Turcotte was born in Winnipeg to a Métis father and a mother who was raised Russian Mennonite. Her father was physically violent with her family and routinely sexually abused Turcotte and her older sister. Confronting and surviving the abuse, incest, and trauma Turcotte experienced as a child was the topic of To a Safer Place, a critically acclaimed and controversial documentary released in 1987. In her career as a Métis knowledge carrier and registered clinical counsellor, Turcotte created new tools and forms of therapy to help survivors of childhood abuse and complex trauma. She created a health program called Indigenous Focusing-Oriented Therapy (IFOT), which blends Indigenous traditions of healing with current needs of Indigenous individuals and communities. The program focuses on addressing trauma resulting from a range of causes, from residential schooling to the child welfare system, to the contemporary aftermath of colonization in Canada. Turcotte also conceptualized a workshop series called “Indigenous Tools for Living,” designed to provide social workers with the means to assist people in remote and urban Indigenous communities.

As professional photographs will be available, family members and guests are encouraged to enjoy the ceremony and remain in their seats.

Graduating students and faculty are reminded to return their gowns following the ceremony and reception.

CELEBRATION PLAZA Immediately following the ceremony, all guests are invited to join graduates, faculty, and staff at an informal reception at the Celebration Plaza across from Abbotsford Centre. Light refreshments will be served. Thanks to TD Insurance and the UFV Alumni Association for sponsoring our post-convocation celebrations.
